‘Overcoming adversity, the path to a prosperous aftermarket future’

Welcome to a brand new year! I hope you enjoyed time off, recharged the batteries and ready to go again. I’ll share a little secret, though, in that I’m actually writing my editor’s notes before the chimes of Big Ben ring and Father Christmas makes his way down the chimney!

I’m also composing this message to you with a stinking cold, which appears to be rife at the moment. I was fit enough, however, to attend a fascinating IAAF conference and enjoyable dinner at Stadium MK, home of MK Dons Football Club.

I’ve attended several of these events in the past, but I thought 2022’s ‘overcoming adversity, the path to a prosperous aftermarket future’ theme was spot-on and the seminars throughout the day were all insightful, detailed and engaging.

According to the official press release, the conference was “bigger and better than ever” –and I have to agree. Hosted by IAAF Chief Executive, Mark Field, who deserves an immense amount of credit for spearheading such a successful event, he was joined by UK AFCAR’s Neil Pattemore, Cleevely EV's Matt Cleevely, GiPA's Quentin Le Hetet and Automotive 30% Club's Julia Muir, all of whom gave rousing presentations in their respective fields (more detail on pg 7).

I also bumped into the team from YMF Car Parts, who I only saw a couple of weeks earlier at the factor’s headquarters in York. I was invited to conduct an interview after working with Matthew Pope on an article for one of my PR clients – a piece that caught the attention of many on social media! After posting a picture from my visit, there were similar levels of engagement –perhaps an illustration of the esteem YMF has in the industry?

Living in Cambridgeshire, York is a fair distance to travel, but given I was on the LNER line to Edinburgh, I took advantage of that and headed up to Scotland to visit Motor Factors Scotland, based in Bonnybridge, near Falkirk.

There’s a fascinating story behind this factor too: after returning to the motor trade and taking over the business, Parvaz Arshad has implemented positive change and is excited for the future.

Both these stories will be in the next issue, so please keep an eye out for those! In the meantime, what have you got to look forward to in this edition? We’ve got an interview with Alliance Automotive Group (AAG)’s Neil Warren to share (pg 12), who agreed to answer questions following the news that AAG will build a new distribution centre in Rotherham.

I asked what the new distribution centre says about the direction of AAG and, specifically, FPS – Neil responded: “The recent news regarding the new national distribution centre being built in the UK, opening early 2025, shows a real and sustained commitment from AAG to the development of the business infrastructure here in the UK.

“It will help support our customers across the UK aftermarket. Although we have already increased capacity of FPS, this is still the single biggest investment we’ve made since the acquisition. This investment will give the business the ability to offer an even wider range of solutions, underpinned with a high level of availability and ensure we are an ‘easy to do business with’ supplier for the market.”

I believe the interview offers a detailed insight into AAG’s strategy, while Neil also shares his views on the condition of the automotive aftermarket – I urge you to find it and read it!

Have a great January and catch up soon!

The

‘Largest ever’ IAAF conference brings together industry delegates

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) held its annual conference on the 8th December – in person for the first time since the pandemic – with the theme of overcoming adversity for a prosperous automotive aftermarket future

The IAAF’s conference, the largest in its histor y, provided a detailed look at the challenges of Brexit, COVID-19 and supply chain issues, as well as the opportunities available to aftermarket businesses for a thriving future

Hosted by IAAF Chief Executive, Mark Field, this year ’ s event was once again sponsored by automotive aftermarket specialist, Alliance Automotive Group

Mark outlined the changes that have been happening in the IAAF, including the introduction of its new training academy, and its efforts with UK AFCAR in lobbying government regarding MOTs and Block Exemption Regulations.

Mark concluded his speech by explaining: “It’s time for the aftermarket to come out of the shadows and promote itself better to attract the best talent and highlight its brilliance IAAF is embracing change so it can positively impact all members.”

This was all before announcing the first speaker of the day, UK AFCAR and IAAF Technical Director, Neil Pattemore. He discussed the changes in the aftermarket, the access available to industr y data, as well as giving an insight into legislation affecting the UK automotive aftermarket in a post-Brexit era and what work is needed for the UK government to catch-up with its EU counterparts

Next up was Matt Cleevely of Cleevely EV, talking attendees through the transition for the sector into EVs He enlightened the audience by claiming that basic steering and suspension parts for EVs are not commonly available over the counter at any of his local motor factor branches, which has led him to stock a mezzanine with parts imported from a supplier in Denmark

Quentin Le Hetet from GiPA hit the stage soon after, offering an informative insight into where the aftermarket is heading in the notso-distant future, as he presented the findings of the first IAAF Aftermarket Trend Index – he revealed that the average age of a workshop owner is 67-years-old!

To conclude the line-up of speakers, delegates heard from Julia Muir, CEO of Gaia Innovation and founder of the Automotive 30% Club, who set out how the aftermarket can achieve and support a better gender balance within the automotive industr y

Comline Auto Parts has underlined its enthusiasm and support for the next generation of automotive professionals by going above and beyond, following a college request for its helpful common fault poster

After spotting an article in the automotive trade media, Stephen Flounders, of Stockton Riverside College, contacted Comline’s marketing department to seek the advertised poster, which highlights regular corrosion on the lower wishbone of a Land Rover Discover y 3, 4 and Range Rover Sport (2005-2012), as well as the Comline fitting kit solution

Not only did Stephen and his students receive the handy literature, but they also obtained tools for their classroom and workshop environment: pens, post-it notes, magnetic pick-up tools and air-fresheners.

Stephen, a former mechanic who fitted Comline parts during his workshop career, is part of the team teaching 47 full-time motor vehicle students – all of whom are enrolled on either a Level 1 or Level 2 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies, or Level 2 Autocare Technician Apprenticeship. He was delighted with Comline’s response:

“I wasn’t sure w hat to exp ec t, s o I was thrilled to receive the b ox of go o dies and the extra lengths C omline had gone to for our students. It’s critical that suppliers unite with colleges to ensure our apprentices have all the to ols at their disp osal in preparation for immersing thems elves in the real-world

“Our apprentices may see issues during their work placements, such as those highlighted by Comline in the common fault posters After being alerted to them, they are now one step ahead “It’s also important that students get to know the brands that they’ ll be working alongside in the future, so, on behalf of my students, thank you to C omline, and I hope this will be the start of a strong partnership ”

PMF introduces this month’s movers and shakers as they begin a new stage of their career in the UK aftermarket

AAG: New

tional

Following the announcement that Alliance Automotive Group (AAG), in partnership with Panattoni, will build a new distribution centre in Rotherham, we contacted AAG and asked to speak with its UK Group Logistics Director, Neil Warren – here’s how the conversation went:

What does news of a new FPS distribution centre say about the direction of AAG and, specifically, FPS?

A

“The recent news regarding the new national distribution centre being built in the UK, opening early 2025, shows a real and sustained commitment from AAG to the development of the business infrastructure here in the UK

“It will help support our customers across the UK aftermarket Although we have already increased capacity of FPS, this is still the single biggest investment we’ve made since the acquisition This investment will give the business the ability to offer an even wider range of solutions, underpinned with a high level of availability and ensure we are an ‘easy to do business with’ supplier for the market.”

PEOPLE & INDUSTRY FACTOR FOCUS
FPS na
distribution centre ‘single biggest investment we’ve made since the acquisition’

mentioned “best-in-class logistics” and “advanced technologies” – are you able to expand on these statements?

“A number of the latest marketleading technologies will be utilised in the new operation This will help ensure that each order taken and processed is done efficiently, quickly and with a level of accuracy that will be unsurpassed Our existing operations team will be at the heart of the new distribution centre, bringing a level of commitment and passion that we continue to be proud of ”

In the same release, you mentioned “an even wider product offering” –again, are you able to develop this and reveal what customers can look forward to in the next couple of years?

A

“We believe we have the best product offering in the market today NAPA, an iconic global brand, has already become our biggest selling brand, closely followed by Apec, thanks to the support of our customers

“In addition, our expansion with supplier brands, like Bosch, Gates, LuK, KYB and ZF TRW, to name a few, continue to be a crucial part of providing customers with the product solutions they need Added to that is our rapid expansion into EV products and services, including the launch of our EV garage module, NexDrive, to ensure we’re able to support our customers well into the future.”

Six years since the acquisition of FPS, along with Apec and BTN –how would you describe the impact this has had on AAG and, ultimately, the industry?

“We’re part of the largest aftermarket distribution company in the world, so expansion and acquisitions remain a key part of our strategy. You mention Knoll in Germany, but we also acquired Lausan in Spain and Soulima in Portugal, along with several factors in France, Netherlands and Belgium From a UK perspective, we made nine acquisitions in UK and Ireland in 2022, and would expect that rhythm to continue over the coming years ”

With just over 5,500 staff, AAG serves over 30,000 technicians around the UK and Ireland, from more than 240 owned factor outlets, plus another 560 affiliated to the group – big numbers! – how much of a challenge, logistically, is it?

Q Q PEOPLE & INDUSTRY FACTOR FOCUS

A

“FPS, Apec and BTN were all good businesses when we acquired them, but the backing and resources of AAG meant we were able to invest in capacity and growth, improving our customer offering along the way In that sense, the impact on both AAG and the wider industry has been hugely positive ”

In 2022, AAG signed an agreement to acquire Knoll GmbH, as well as add several motor factors to its portfolio – can we expect a similar pace and strategy this year?

“It’s a huge, exciting challenge, but one we relish! We’re fortunate to have been able to adapt our logistics infrastructure to meet the changing demands and pressures of the market, making sure the customer remains at the forefront of our decision making In some cases that means improving our national and regional distribution centres and, in others, it’s about making sure we leverage our global leadership to bring the best product solutions to market as early as possible

“The new distribution centre allows us to bring both of those workstreams together and will, ultimately, give our customers an even better service proposition well into the future ”

Parts availability has been a hot topic – has AAG managed to stay on top of this task?

“With the level of supply chain disruption throughout the globe, this has been the hottest topic since 2020 We learnt a huge amount about being more agile in this area during COVID-19 and how to utilise our knowledge and resources to best ensure we have availability for the benefit of our customers We significantly increased inventory levels throughout this period to ensure our customers could maximise their sales We dedicated resources to managing this, and customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive ”

Finally, how would you sum-up the condition of the automotive aftermarket?

A A

“The UK automotive aftermarket is in a great position Car owners are very mindful of the current economic climate we all face, and the UK aftermarket is in a position to ensure that we can offer them a professional solution with world-class brands for their vehicle’s requirements Obviously, with changing drivetrains, increasing levels of autonomous driving technology and issues around access to vehicle data, there are still challenges on the horizon

“However, we recognise our responsibility to help the industry navigate through these challenges and shape them into opportunities All that said, with the investment we’re making in our new distribution centre, it’s clear we have confidence the UK aftermarket will remain in great shape ”

MAM Sof tware’s

Autopart ‘streamlines efficiencies whilst protecting margins’

ERP

MAM Software, which

Autopart is the versatile business management solution that seamlessly integrates sales, stock management, account and reporting processes into one easy-to-use package As well as many processes that are fundamental to a successful business, Autopart is filled with intuitive features that can streamline, digitise and maximise productivity in an economic climate where a smart business strategy is vital to success MAM Software Automotive Sales Manager, Ben Nicholls, reveals his 10 top tips for streamlining efficiencies whilst protecting margins using Autopart:

1Maximise margins: Diving into invoices, costs and trends through indepth reporting gives a clear view of margins, including where they are too low In MAM’s Autopart system, this process is simple, and all reports can be automated in the day-end to ensure this important information gets to the right person so it can be acted upon efficiently

2The right stock at the right time: Analyse part usages to ensure the right amount of stock Autopart recommends new minimum and maximum stock levels These figures can be used to generate suggested purchase orders, ensuring only the right amount of stock is ordered

3Money left on the shelf ?: Slow-moving and unprofitable products can eat into margins. Autopart can analyse sales trends across single or multi-site locations and adjust stock levels accordingly. This leaves more profitable stock and fewer unnecessary purchases

4Extend business and trade online

24/7: Having an online presence increases the opportunity for sales MAM Software’s ecommerce solutions allow the user to receive all their online orders immediately into their MAM business management system for onward processing Once on the site, customers can browse a product catalogue, search for products and add them to their basket They will see their own prices (trade or retail), as well as product images, datasheets and the accurate availability of stock

5Control pricing: The key to profitable sales is a pricing strategy that reflects customers' varying pricing needs Autopart can help define and manage complex pricing models or run special offers tailored by item, product group, customer and/or date

Autopart can save users money by communicating with customers directly via email and SMS text messaging

8

Increase the average order value: This is a great way to improve profits from existing customers Autopart makes it easy to take advantage of cross-sell and upsell opportunities by linking relevant products together for staff to recommend at the point-of-sale 9

6

Source parts from branches first: Companies with multiple branches can utilise Autopart’s stock levelling This automated process analyses branch stock levels and sources parts from other branches where possible – saving money on unnecessary purchase orders to suppliers

7Go paperless: Many businesses still rely on costly, inefficient paper communications If sending invoices, statements or promotional material by post,

Run promotions: Attract new customers, launch products, ensure customers feel like they are getting value for money or offload excess stock using sales promotions Autopart makes this easy and simple to do using its sales promotions tool

10

Reducing customer returns: Integrated into Autopart is Autocat, a widely recognised, industrystandard parts catalogue that lets users quickly find and compare components from a wide range of suppliers by matching parts to particular vehicles, helping to ensure the right part, first time

Autoelectro: ‘Don’t cut corners with quality during economic crisis’

In this particular product category, Autoelectro claimed knowing the origin of the part, how it is produced and what components are used makes a big difference It also makes a difference to the price

There are telling signs, according to its UK sales manager, Nick Hood, when a rotating electrics product has been made to a “small budget”

He said: “In an alternator, for example, stator windings can be reduced, which will likely produce the output required when analysed on a test bed; however, because

the windings are shorter, apply that to realworld driving conditions in the middle of winter, it’s unlikely to maintain that output over a long drive, when on-board electricals and accessories are in full use

“Likewise, in the starter motor, the windings can be shortened, while quality can also be reduced on the gearing and bearings The combination of these factors, particularly, again, in a winter period when the starter motor is likely to be put under maximum strain, can shorten the life of the part There are ways of making a part ‘on the cheap’ but to a lesser specification ”

Nick responded: “Th cost of living crisis make for grim reading and the majority are feeling the pinch – some more than others – so the last thin motorists need is for their vehicle to be in the garage for an added expense that they didn’t budget for; however, while price isn’t always a gauge of quality, in this instance, sticking to a premium product is a sensible approach

“There is a temptatio the ‘value option’, but the implications are greater for a value alternator than a value chocolate biscuit!”

Motorist torn between short-term fix and longevity?

Autoelectro acknowledged that starter motors and alternators are distress purchases; the motorist wants to be back out on the road as soon as possible, so, taking the cost of living crisis into consideration, they may pick the cheapest item on the menu – irrespective of where it’s come from, how it’s tested or what’s used to manufacture the part

A garage mechanic providing accurate, consumer-friendly information will demonstrate professionalism and knowledge, plus they will increase their chances of repeat business; the alternative is a scenario where an unhappy customer chooses to go to a competitor when the replacement part fitted gives up only after a couple of thousand miles

Nick concluded: “Short-term, the customer will be able to get on with their day-to-day activities, but, for the reasons outlined, they shouldn’t be surprised if they’re back in the workshop a few months later – faced with another bill!

TALK OF THETRADE

It’s back! The first Talk of the Trade of 2023 brings highlights from a recent issue of PMM, which brings interviews and insights from Bosch, Pico Technology, GroupTyre, Castol and Witham Motorsport.

First-up, Bosch highlights its hybrid and EV training courses that are available at every level:

“The trend towards alternatively powered vehicles is now impossible to ignore; however, for many, this may feel like stepping way outside of their comfort zones and education in this area is both essential and positively encouraged

“Bosch offers a comprehensive solution, with a complete suite of hybrid and EV training courses available to suit all needs and requirements, ranging from essential EV knowledge and awareness, right up to fully-qualified ‘expert’ technician at Level 4 IMI – the highest level of qualification currently available

“During the COVID-restricted times of the last couple of years, much of this training was adapted for online attendance, with the courses adopting Bosch’s unique virtual classroom and blended learning delivery methods; however, the desire is now very much in favour of face-to-face learning and Bosch has its complete portfolio of training, including EV courses, available once again as classroom sessions at its dedicated training locations across the UK and in Ireland.”

Smaller engines, of course another facet of the mission to eliminate emissions, is pinpointed as a key reason by Castrol: “The rise of engine downsizing in the 2000s and 2010s has resulted in smaller-displacement engines with forced induction, usually turbocharging

“Modern engines are built to very different design philosophies, and to increasingly tight tolerances An oil of a different specification to that required can block filters, poison catalysts, and even cause oil starvation that can contribute to engine damage ”

Distribution combine to support gro wth in spring market

The UK is currently in the middle of a pothole epidemic, according to Kilen, with pothole-related breakdowns at a three-year high, and councils paying millions in road compensation claims last year. While drivers despair at the state of the UK’s pockmarked roads, automotive professionals know that potholes lead to broken coil springs and increased revenue.

They develop when water seeps into the road surface, then freezes and expands, creating a void under the tarmac Traffic causes the tarmac to collapse into the void, creating a pothole

Pothole impacts cause microscopic cracks and progressively weaken the spring material with each compression or shock impact (fatigue)

Kilen claimed it improves fatigue strength via shot peening and stress relieving, which, together with the addition of a zinc phosphate coating, effectively reduces the risk of premature failure. Pothole impacts add significantly to spring fatigue, making breakage more likely

DENSO delves into spark plug technolog y

Despite the growth in electric drivetrains, the internal combustion engine is still the most common propulsion technology visiting workshops. In addition, with the pivotal role they continue to play in the powertrain of hybrid vehicles, they will remain at the centre for the independent sector for the foreseeable future.

Although many ICEs are powered by diesel, petrol is increasingly common, as it is the favoured fuel for most modern hybrids, so understanding spark plug technology and selecting the most appropriate reference for the application is as important as ever, according to DENSO, an OEM in spark plug technology.

To be able to work effectively and efficiently under difficult operating conditions and to achieve the correct performance requirements, spark plugs are constructed in three main sections: the housing, insulator and electrodes, and these sections then contain individual components that are made from carefully selected materials.

The housing (1) forms an outer shell that surrounds and supports the insulator and secures the spark plug assembly to the engine The ring washer or gasket (2) provides an insulating seal between the spark plug housing and engine to prevent any gases escaping during compression and combustion The ground electrode (10) is mounted to the threaded lower section of the housing, which allows electric current to flow through the engine back to the battery

The ceramic-based insulator (3) provides electrical insulation between the terminal, centre shaft, housing and centre electrode With spark voltages on some modern ignition systems exceeding 40kV, the insulator, with a thickness of only millimetres, must provide the required insulating properties As a result, DENSO spark plugs incorporate a ceramic material with high purity aluminium oxide to provide superior heat resistant characteristics,

mechanical strength and excellent electrical insulation The two ring gaskets (4) provide a secure fit and airtight seal between the housing and the insulator

The high voltage is supplied through the terminal (5), either from a direct fit to the base of the ignition coil or by using a spark plug wire/cord that connects the plug terminal to the coil. Different terminal types are produced, which allows almost any high tension spark plug wire/cord or ignition coil to be connected to the spark plug terminal

DENSO offers four different terminal types:

l Thread (with no terminal nut, used for motorcycles and older types of cars)

l Terminal nut (thread with nut that can be unscrewed)

l Crimped (thread with crimped nut for better connection between the nut and thread, but although the nut can be removed, it is more difficult)

l Solid (solid terminal for car applications, which cannot be removed)

The steel centre shaft (6) connects the terminal and the centre electrode, allowing high voltage current to flow from the terminal to the centre. The resistor (7), also referred to as a suppressor, reduces the peak current of the spark Without a

resistor, the peak current will create bursts of electromagnetic fields or radio noise, which can interfere with electrical equipment in the car DENSO spark plug resistors are made of a special glass and copper powder mix

The centre electrode (9) is made from materials, such as nickel alloys, that can resist high temperatures. These materials must also be extremely hard and durable to minimise the wear caused by spark erosion The centre section of the electrode (8) often contains a copper core to improve thermal conductivity

For improved performance and durability, centre electrodes can also be manufactured with an electrode tip made from precious metals that are even tougher than the traditional electrode materials These harder wearing materials can operate at higher temperatures with reduced wear, but another major benefit is that they allow for the use of finer electrodes, resulting in better ignition performance

DENSO spark plugs feature several unique patented materials:

l Standard 2.5mm diameter nickel alloy

l New and unique 1 5mm diameter nickel alloy (used in nickel TT spark plugs) that reduces spark wear by up to 40% compared to standard nickel

24 I PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR JANUARY 2023 BATTERIES & IGNITION

l Platinum, a precious metal that can withstand very high temperatures, with 1.1mm diameter electrodes

l High purity iridium alloy that is resistant to the highest temperatures and is the hardest material ever used in a spark plug, according to DENSO These iridium tips with diameters of 0 4mm, 0 55mm or 0 7mm are laser welded to the centre electrode

l Patented U-groove, which increases the edge section, allowing sparks to occur easily and the flame to grow faster

l Taper cut ground electrode, shaped to reduce the quenching effect and improve flame growth

The ground electrode (10) is subject to the extreme temperature changes inside the combustion chamber and although a nickel chrome alloy is used for most of these electrodes, platinum can be added to extend their life. Some spark plugs however, are equipped with a copper core ground electrode for improved thermal conductivity

DENSO uses some features for the ground electrode to improve ignition performance:

l Needle type with either 1 5mm diameter protruded nickel electrode (nickel TT) or a 0 7mm diameter welded platinum electrode (SIP and Iridium TT)

As with the centre electrode, the smaller needle type ground electrodes lower the required voltage, ensure a reliable spark, which reduces the quenching effect and improves ignition performance

GS Yuasa and Mara thon Warehouse Distribution pushing ahead follo wing ‘stra tegic distribution a greement’

Checking the battery of every vehicle that enters a workshop is important at all times of year, but never more so than in winter, according to GS Yuasa.

The colder the temperature, the harder batteries have to work to provide reliable starting power In fact, a battery loses about 30% of its power on a freezing winter day when compared to a summery 20°C, according to GS Yuasa, which is why battery failure is more likely over the colder months and why it’s so important to check them

Doing so is easy, plus factors can reap the rewards of increased battery sales! Marathon Warehouse Distribution, which announced a “strategic distribution agreement” with the battery manufacturer and supplier back in November 2022, urged factors to “talk to us about the GS Yuasa range of workshop testing tools and accessories and give your battery business a boost”

SMP Europe highlights importance of ignition lead replacement in winter

wet months can accelerate the deterioration of ignition leads, according to engine management specialist, SMP Europe, so now might be the best time to stock-up and prepare for a potential spike in sales.

Ignition leads, sometimes known as hightension (HT) leads or spark plug wires, carry an electrical current from the ignition coil into the spark plugs, ultimately lighting the fuel and air within the combustion chamber of the engine

Comprised of conductive material surrounded by a silicone jacket for protection, ignition leads sit in close proximity to the engine and must, therefore, be able to withstand dramatic temperature changes, caustic chemicals and high physical forces

SMP Europe: Why ignition leads fail

Ignition leads are made from durable, low resistance materials, and tested to withstand the harsh environment that they operate in Conductive materials in the leads will deteriorate, which, in turn,

reduces the power able to reach the engine, compromising the ignition process

This is generally caused by wear and tear over time Leads can also be affected more in the winter months, as cold, damp conditions increase the stress on the components, along with water and salt Oil, coolant, and fuel vapour can also cause oxidisation and corrosion in the connector contacts

The main symptoms of a faulty lead include an engine light appearing, reduced fuel efficiency, decrease in power, visible wear and tear to the cable, and misfiring

SMP Europe core technology

Lead cores can vary depending on VM and the age of the vehicle. The three technologies used are copper cores, wire wound (reactive), and resistive cores

Copper core consists of copper wire with negligible resistance and double silicone outer combined and boots, having an inbuilt resistance to generate the required suppression

The complex nature of copper core componentry makes this technology more expensive than the other technology types available This type of cable is predominantly used by German manufacturers

Wire wound core cable is made up of a carbon-coated fibreglass core enclosed in stainless steel windings and double silicone outer jacket Engineered to meet or exceed SAE specifications for radio frequency interference, suppression comes from a magnetic field created when current crosses the steel winding

This type of cable is mainly used by French and Japanese VMs, as well as Saab and Volvo

Resistive core cable contains a graphite coated fibreglass core, which is surrounded by a conductive latex coating and double silicone outer This is the simplest and most robust of the cables used and works by providing resistance along the length of the cable.

This type of technology is typically used by American, British and Asian VMs

NGK supports factors with “right” glo w plug stock profile

Ignition specialist, NGK, reported that it works tirelessly to help its distributors and their garage customers cope with the increased winter demand for glow plugs for diesel powered vehicles.

The winter months are the key selling period for glow plugs, and NGK works closely with its distributors to ensure they do not miss out on any sales opportunities

NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd Marketing Manager, Mark Hallam, said: “Factors, distributors and garages are all fully aware that glow plug sales spike in the winter months as temperatures fall, and NGK is there to help them cope with the increased demand by ensuring they stock the right profile of glow plugs to leverage this sales opportunity ”

Glow plug replacement should be part of the winter service, according to NGK, as they play an integral role in a vehicle’s economy and emissions performance, and instead of changing one faulty glow plug, workshops should ‘upsell’ by replacing all of them

If one plug has failed, it is extremely likely that the remaining plugs will suffer a similar fate in the near future By replacing the vehicle set, not only will the tight

emissions legislation be complied with, but as the glow plug is now an integral part of the engine management system, the starting and cold drive quality will be kept at its maximum

Removal and fitting

As glow plugs are often installed in engines for many thousands of miles, some vehicles are more prone than others in presenting removal problems If there is doubt that a glow plug can be removed without damage, then if accessibility, circumstances, and time permits, a technician should consider penetrating oil around the glow plug, then a squirt of engine oil The vehicle can still be used, and the job can be tackled another day, according to NGK, to allow the oil to penetrate and do its work Remove the glow plug whilst the engine is still hot, using obvious precautions to protect hands

To avoid damaging a new glow plug, technicians should follow the installation advice on the NGK packaging: always install

on to the taper seat by hand, do not over tighten the glow plug – or the terminal if the electrical connection is secured via a nut.

specification glow-plugs?

NGK claimed that because glow plugs are now a vital part of the engine management system, it has never been more important to ensure that the installer is fitting the correct specification item

NGK went further by advising against budget alternatives, as the engine management system can pick up very quickly the fact that they are not to the correct specification The glow/engine management light will illuminate, performance of the vehicle will suffer, and worst case would be that consequential damage could result.

TMD Friction provides best practice braking tips

– with winter still in-mind!

The car's braking system consists of many components, and most of them are completely exposed, which makes them susceptible to all kinds of pollution, road grit and moisture, and in the winter, to slush and snow. This applies to brake pipes and rubber hoses, calipers, ABS rings, as well as brake discs and pads; therefore, it is important that motor factors have access to the highest quality parts and the technical know-how to advise technicians on best-practice braking tips, according to TMD Friction Head of Technical Training, Scott Irwin MIMI.

Here, he explains the impact that winter conditions can have on the functioning of the braking system and how motor factors can help support technicians with the relevant advice and support to take best care of it:

Particular attention should be paid to vehicle brake pipes and hoses, both rigid and flexible Under the influence of slush and snow, old brake fluid with a lot of moisture in the system can be a harmful influence on these parts, as they can start to corrode from inside or outside

To verify a brake hose defect, motor factors should encourage technicians to carefully examine the hoses and their metal terminals for leaks, rust or mechanical

damage The hoses need to be in good technical condition, as they act as the carrier of the brake fluid and are crucial for the proper functioning of the brake system

The operational efficiency of the brake fluid itself can be checked using a special tester, such as TEX1000BFT from Textar, which allows the technician to determine the exact boiling point of the brake fluid

Manufacturers recommend replacing it, on average, every two years or 60,000km,

whichever comes first When replacing the brake fluid, we must remember that boiling point is not everything; for best operation of all systems, such as ABS/ESP, it is not enough that the fluid does not ‘boil ’

It must have the right viscosity, which ensures sufficient fast pressure changes in the system It is important to choose not only the DOT classification by number, but also the proper viscosity, such as DOT4 or DOT4LV

ABS plugs and rings are another element susceptible to adverse winter conditions Some replacement plugs do not have factory seals, for example

In this case, the most dangerous element is the moisture, which can cause corrosion of electrical connectors

The problem of rust can also apply to calipers, brake pads and discs, which means in all places where moisture gets. The brake pads can corrode together with the guides, which will prevent their free

movement during brake operation.

The winter period is conducive to these phenomena due to the increased humidity; for example, a characteristic rust coating may appear on the surface of the brake disc If these are trace amounts, when braking, the driver will hear the

characteristic sound of scraping, similar to that of grinding steel with coarse sandpaper

After a few braking operations, rust will come off and the specific noise will stop In extreme cases, after a long standstill, corrosion can permanently damage the structure of the disc, so it is important that the technician can access high-quality parts and the

owner is advised to drive the car regularly.

On the rear axle, the most common fault is the corrosion of the handbrake cables, which, if not used frequently, tends to corrode faster If the cable has a broken shield, water will get inside it This causes contamination and progressive corrosion of

the cable, especially of its ends, which in conditions of negative temperature can lead to a blockage.

If the water in the cable shield freezes, it may not be possible to release the hand brake in the cold

How to avoid braking system problems during winter

First, it is recommended to regularly check its condition and if necessary to replace individual elements with new ones

From the point of view of the correct operation of the brakes, assembly and maintenance of the system is very important

It should be remembered that the appropriate points should be protected against corrosion with a dedicated ceramic or synthetic grease, depending on the purpose, such as Textar’s Ceratec –Texcear01. It is also worth using the VM’s operating instructions

Schaeffler offers practical tips to share with workshop customers

Schaeffler has always shared its knowhow to help technicians install its products confidently and correctly, which is where the Schaeffler REPXPERT platform, along with the technical team

behind it, comes to the fore Although the primary focus of REPXPERT is to provide installers with a raft of technical support material and IMI approved training, Schaeffler also has valuable information it can share with its distribution partners This support can help staff improve their relationships with their workshop customers and, more importantly, help to reduce the number of warranty claims and returned parts that might otherwise end up at their door

For more information about Schaeffler, www rdr link/FFQ017

Schaeffler Technical Manager, Alistair Mason, takes up the story: “As we’re out visiting workshops on an almost daily basis, the REPXPERT team has a depth of practical real-world experience, and because installation errors are a primary cause of warranty claims, there are some very useful tips that we can give to motor factor staff to pass onto workshops when they receive an order for a replacement clutch

“By far the most common fitting errors concern BMW clutches, which come with a transport locking plate installed in the clutch cover. This must only be removed after the clutch has been bolted into place, but, often, uninformed technicians remove it prior to fitting, causing the self-adjusting clutch to ‘adjust up’, meaning it will be unable to disengage in operation

“When it comes to hydraulics, including concentric slave cylinders (CSC), there are two regular errors we encounter The first is an over pressurised CSC, where the pedal has been pumped rapidly during the

bleeding process and not allowed to rest/stabilise between pumps, pushing the bearing and seal to the end of its stroke, damaging the CSC and causing the seal to leak The second is contamination of the new CSC as a result of the old hydraulic fluid not being thoroughly and completely flushed out of the system before installation

“Similarly, there are two common issues concerning dual mass flywheels (DMF): the first is if the DMF, which absorbs crankshaft vibrations to prevent them being transmitted throughout the rest of the drivetrain, is subjected to additional crankshaft vibration beyond its engineering parameters, such as an engine misfire This is likely to cause the DMF to fail prematurely, so maintaining the engine in good operational condition is vitally important The second issue is installation errors associated with the engine management system, which uses crankshaft speed and position information that is fed back to the engine control unit, often from the DMF.

It is not uncommon to find that after the DMF is replaced, the vehicle will not start due to the DMF being fitted in the wrong position, a problem that can easily be avoided by checking the correct installation and service information on the REPXPERT app

“These snippets of information are invaluable as they are quick and simple to pass on when the workshop is placing an order, which can potentially save both parties a load of hassle in returned parts, fruitless warranty claims and dissatisfied customers ”

LIQUI MOLY introduces brake fluid for EVs

Vehicles with a conventional combustion engine have a brake system – electric and hybrid cars too Usually, all of them require the brake fluid to be changed every two years: “But that’s about it for the similarities, because the requirement profile of EVs is sometimes completely different,” according to David Kaiser, who heads the research and development department at LIQUI MOLY T h a t ’s w h y t h e s p e c i a l i s t f o r v e h i c l e c h e m i c a l s h a s d e v e l o p e d B r a ke F l u i d

D OT 5 1 E V

There are a number of reasons why brake systems are more demanding for vehicles that are partly or purely electrically powered: “One is corrosion protection,” said David “Because the electric motor also acts as a brake and uses it to generate energy for the battery, the mechanical brake system is used less frequently This leads to spot corrosion (special additives counteract this effect).

“However, this does not mean that a brake system in an EV only does a little work These vehicles are generally heavier than vehicles that are powered by an internal combustion engine and rapidly reach high speeds from which they also have to be braked abruptly in the event of

danger As a result, the brakes quickly become very hot. Brake fluids, such as our new DOT 5 1 EV, have to be effective even when the brake system is hot and, therefore, require a high dry and high wet boiling point.”

Property number three is the lowest possible electrical conductivity This plays a role if an electrical system is installed near the brake system and is not sufficiently shielded As with the wireless, inductive charging of an electric toothbrush or mobile phone, electrical voltages can then be induced in the brake system, which can decompose the brake fluid or promote corrosion

The fourth property of interest is viscosity – David continued: “As with motor oil, the flow behaviour is decisive for the performance of the fluid The lower the viscosity, the faster the engine is fully oiled A low-viscosity brake fluid transmits the braking pulses in the system more quickly, the electronic driver assistance systems, such as ABS or ESC function better and respond even more sensitively ”

Lifting jack-pads for Tesla models

Tesla models need maintenance just like any other car, according to Laser Tools, and when jacking up – using either a floor jack or a two-post ramp – it can be easy to damage the bodywork or the battery case, even though the correct lifting points have been used

The tool supplier has introduced two sets of four lifting-jack pads, designed to help prevent any damage on the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y (8439), or the Model S and Model X (8440)

Pushed directly into the lifting points on the underside of the vehicle, the rubber O-ring holds the pad in place while the jack or ramp is then raised up to the pad The pads feature colourcoded rubber collars – yellow on the 8439 and green on the 8440 – which identifies their location under the car and also acts as a grip to help remove the pad from the vehicle after use

These are manufactured from sturdy, non-compressible and non-marring acetal plastic (polyoxymethylene), with a rubber Oring Spare single pads of both types are also available (8460 for Model 3 and Model Y, while 8461 for Model S and Model X).
