THE DAWNING OF A NEW ERA

Thursday 08 September is a day that we will never forget. It will be a day that we will always remember what we were doing when we received the news that Queen Elizabeth II had died peacefully at Balmoral.

For many people Queen Elizabeth II was, up to that day, the only Sovereign they had ever known in their lifetime. Her Coronation in June 1953 was televised and millions of people gathered around the television as Queen Elizabeth II made her oath – for some people this was to be the first time they had ever watched a TV.

On 6th February this year she became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. Millions more people gathered together in person and around the TV in June 2022 to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Nobody would have thought that the next time we would gather together as a nation would be to celebrate her life and mourn her death.

In the days that followed her death we witnessed an outpouring of love for her, not just from people in the UK but from people around the world. For me this was a mark of the genuine respect which Queen Elizabeth II received from everyone she met.

I don’t think you have to be a staunch Royalist to be touched by such a significant event because she was such a remarkable person who dedicated her life to serving the people. For many people she became a constant in an ever changing world, seeing us through great loss, celebration and disasters while still continuing to serve her people, even during the coronavirus pandemic whilst mourning the loss of Prince Philip.

Few can argue that she was respected by people around the world and that her reign of 70 years was one which touched the hearts of many. You only have to read some of the memories which ordinary people have shared about ‘the time they met the Queen’ to see that she genuinely cared about us, the people she served.

It is now time for us as a nation to welcome King Charles III and the Carolean era. But as we say a final goodbye to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II I feel it is appropriate to simply say ‘thank you’ for the lifetime of service which she gave to us - she will undoubtedly live on in our hearts forever.

SIGNIFY LIGHTINGSOLUTIONS INSTALLED IN EVERY EVERLAST GYM ACROSS THE UK

and efficiently planning maintenance.

Signify has been appointed by Frasers Group to design and supply the lighting for all 69 Everlast Gyms across the UK.

The lighting upgrade is part of the Fraser Group’s ‘elevation strategy’ to develop a unique model within the UK fitness industry and offer an unparalleled class and gym experience for Everlast members and visitors which is both inclusive and immersive.

In addition, designing the gyms with LED lighting dramatically cuts the energy consumption by about 80%, when compared to the traditional technologies that were deployed earlier. Added controls will help manage and reduce energy consumption by creating and managing uniform light schedules for all 69 gyms from a single dashboard, reducing operational costs, ensuring compliance,

Everlast gyms at Denton, Shirebrook and Preston have already been upgraded and offer members a variety of different environments – or ‘innovative zones’ – to train in, creating unique gym experiences. Contemporary luminaires from the Modular range distribute a soft yet functional light that is designed for hospitality venues, public, retail and other large spaces. These lights use minimalist design principles that add to the visual appeal of the space. To compliment this, the Keyline range, from the Philips portfolio, creates chevrons, lines and squares in the ceiling, directing members to the different zones and identifying the individual areas.

As part of the redesign, the Interact connected lighting system, which includes multisite management capability, provides centralised lighting control for all the gyms. Agreed scenes and schedules ensure a consistent look and feel, as well as providing increased visibility, flexibility, and control of the lights. THE

ECA is calling on the Prime Minister to tackle the cost-of-living crisis by immediately changing the way electricity and gas are taxed.

In an open letter sent to Liz Truss, backed by signatories including leading construction industry bodies BESA, BSRIA, FETA and SELECT, ECA is urging the Prime Minister to shift the balance of levies from electricity to gas, thereby encouraging a switch to electricity. The open letter marks the launch of ECA’s new campaign, Make the Switch, to make Britain's energy bills fairer for households.

“Sky-high energy bills are one of the biggest factors in the ongoing cost-of-living crisis,” said ECA Director

of Workforce and Public Affairs Andrew Eldred. “By changing the way different energy sources are levied, 70 per cent of households could immediately save up to £100 a year.

“With one small act, the PM could throw a lifeline to millions of struggling families desperately worried by the prospect of ever-rising energy price caps.”

Fuel levies on domestic electricity bills are 20 per cent higher than on gas bills, meaning renewable energy is more heavily taxed than gas. Research by E.On shows that rebalancing these levies, known as ‘green’ levies, will drive down the cost of electricity and reduce 70 per cent of customers’ bills by up to £100.

As well as cutting bills, balanced ‘green’ levies would incentivise renewable energy – the cheapest form of energy we have – and avoid the need to resort to importing gas from abroad.

ESP EMERGENCY LIGHTING CHOSEN FOR BLUE BAY TRAVEL PROJECT

Blue Bay Travel is an award-winning UK tour operator, with over 100 industry awards to its name. Launched in 2003, the business has grown significantly in recent years, and its stylish offices in Trentham, Staffordshire, now houses a team of 120 staff.

During a programme to upgrade the head office premises - which comprises a total of four individual office buildingsthe installation of a range of Duceri emergency lighting products from ESP wasMartynundertaken.Walley, managing director of electrical contracting firm Hide Ltd, had overall responsibility for the project and worked closely with ESP’s design and technical teams to come up with a

suitable emergency lighting scheme. Although a manual test system was originally considered, it was agreed that a self-test system would be more suitable, to avoid any impact on the day-to-day operational requirements of the offices. Self-test emergency light fittings offer numerous benefits over standard fittings by reducing the costs and time associated with manual testing and inspection.

New circuits

The decision was made to install new circuits for the emergency lighting system installation so as not to disturb the existing installation and create disruption for the staff. The emergency lighting system was installed through all four of

the office blocks utilised by Blue Bay Travel, with a range of products selected for their suitability.

EDATA GETS AN UPGRADE

EDATA has recently released a technical update designed to improve the experience of both the creators of product information (the manufacturers) and the consumers of product data (the wholesalers and their contractor customers).

Highlights from the latest upgrade include:

● Automatic 3-tier website navigation structure: for wholesalers moving to an ecommerce offer, a navigational structure for each of the 50+ manufacturers using EDATA can be downloaded and pushed onto a website without any lengthy workaround.

● EDATA provides a more complete data set with new fields to accommodate the Trade Tariff Commodity Code, and

the Country of Origin. For businesses involved in MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) work, the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code® (UNSPSC®), the global classification of products and services, is also included.

● Brand logos for the 50+ manufacturers using EDATA can be downloaded in one go, or individually. For wholesalers wanting to display a gallery on their website to demonstrate their stock range, it makes it much easier to manage and ensures you’re displaying the latest logos.

● Providing improved search results so contractors can find products on a wholesaler website: the most important technical attributes of a product, the

ones which contractors are most likely to search for, are now flagged, taking the guess work out of building search routines and filters on a website.

Richard Appleton, Head of Digitalisation at the EDA, added “Making EDATA easier to use and more effective is central to its development. We have our own ideas for upgrades and improvements but it is really our customers – the 65 leading manufacturers and wholesalers using EDATA – that tell us which upgrades they would like to see first.

“There is another batch of upgrades scheduled for October 2022.”

After a number of requests for point of sale and retail displays, Deligo has responded with a new checklist, display packs and snap/send/spend campaign.

In addition to the Loyalty Point scheme launched in 2021, Deligo has introduced its latest slat wall display packs and a ‘Point of Sale Marketing Checklist’ - which allows the stockist to easily introduce a fresh, new look to their store front and get rewarded.

Deligo is encouraging participation in the “snap/send/spend” campaign, designed to give back to participating

wholesalers with a £20 credit note to all who take a picture of their new displays and Point of Sale stands.

Deligo will also publish the submitted pictures through multiple social media platforms, encouraging end-user footfall towards the wholesaler and promoting engagement within the sector.

Following the marketing checklist –users can select one colour combination of slat wall header and stickers, fill up the slat wall with products, take a snap – and then send it to marketing@deligo.co.uk for a £20 credit note.

CHARITY UPDATE
AT HTTPS://ELECTRICALINDUSTRIESTRADING.ARLO.CO/CHECKOUT FOR INFORMATION ON THE EIC AND ITS WORK VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WAD003

This month PEW sat down with David Sweetman, Marketing & Business Development Director at Di-LOG, to hear about changing testing requirements, safe insolation, lockout kits and more.

FACE TO FACE

DI-LOG

Q How can wholesalers make the most of the UK’s growing EV charging infrastructure?

A. In the UK, there are approximately 33,000 public charging points for around 400,000 plug-in electric vans and passenger vehicles.

In order to grow the UK’s EV fleet to 23.2 million EVs by 2032, (that’s 55% of all UK vehicles), the Climate Change Committee (CCC) estimates 325,000 public charging points will be needed. These numbers do not include the EV chargers that are installed at homes and workplaces.

Within the next 12-18 months, I estimate that every electrical engineer will find themselves in a position where they will need to install and verify an EV charge point. So, will they need a Multifunction Installation Tester with EV testing capability? Well, yes!

The new Di-LOG DL9130EV incorporates a full Auto EV RCD Test sequence that will verify all the safety devices that protect the user when charging their vehicle. Is there a premium for this feature? No, the DL9130EV remains one of the most competitive feature-packed MFTs in the UK.

Q What are some of the latest isolation innovations helping to make the industry safer?

A. Those of you that know me, are fully aware of my dedication to helping make our industry safer. Safe Isolation saves lives with one in 25 electrical incidents at work resulting in a fatality, compared with one in 500 from other causes.

I have invested a lot of time developing Di-LOG’s Safe Isolation range of safety equipment, our latest voltage-proving unit, the PU690, has one of the highest safety category ratings of CAT II 750V. The award-winning CombiVolt range is the benchmark for all Voltage Indicators with

Di-LOG introducing the first auto-switching voltage and continuity tester to the UK market in 2001.

Q How does British manufacturing and a UK-based R&D team benefit Di-LOG and its customers?

A. Di-LOG is proud to support British manufacturing by designing and building our specialist safety test equipment in the UK. All of our 18th Edition Multifunction Installation Testers have a UK-based R&D team dedicated to designing, building and delivering the most up-to-date technology to meet the continuous needs of our customers.

“ Within the next 12-18 months, I estimate that every electrical engineer will find themselves in a position where they will need to install and verify an EV charge point.”

FACE TO FACE

From time to time, things don't always go quite to plan and like any electronic device that is designed to work in the most extreme environment, there is always the odd hiccup, so to speak. With UKbased manufacturing, research, development and design teams, issues can be quickly found and resolvedwithout your equipment potentially seeing more of the world than yourself.

Q Are there any changes to testing requirements to be aware of in the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2:2022?

A. When the second amendment to BS7671 was published earlier this year, there were several key updates relating to testing and inspecting. One such update was to the process of testing protective devices such as RCDs or RCBOs. BS7671 AM2 now states that the minimum test

required for such devices to be an AC test conducted at 1x the trip current.

As a test equipment manufacturer dedicated to a safer industry, and despite what is stated in BS7671 as the minimum regulation, I would still recommend that all RCD specific tests should be conducted to your test equipment capability, this includes the ½, 1x and 5x test most instruments were designed to conduct.

Q What are ‘lockout kits’ and where should they be used?

A. The final part of an electrical engineer’s ‘safe isolation’ procedure is locking out and tagging out (LOTO). Following this critical safety process prevents the circuit or supply from being energised by locking off the MCB, MCCB or main switch. Even when your customers are working alone, you never can tell who will enter the premises, discover the power to be switched off and inadvertently re-energise putting themselves and others in danger.

The Di-LOG range of lockout kits are designed with safety, versatility and affordability in mind. There are four complete kits in the range covering virtually all installation types, however, we

do offer bespoke kits designed around theTheindividual.higher the level of kit the more features are included. By adding items such as multiple isolation lockout hasps the kits enable multiple persons to work on the same circuit, with the ability to hold up to six lockout padlocks.

Q What are Di-LOG’s goals for the remainder of the year and into

A.2023?

The team at Di-LOG are dedicated to supporting their national distribution partners by designing and building quality test instrumentation designed around our customer’s needs.

All Di-LOG instruments are designed and manufactured to the highest quality specification and you can be assured that all manufacturing processes adhere to internationally recognised standards. DiLOG instruments are accurate, safe and rugged – you won’t find a better balance between cost and fitness for purpose.

A LIGHTLEADING

Ovia was launched at the end of 2019 with industry expert Mike Collins at the helm and a small sales team hitting the phones and the roads. The aim was to bring to the professional electrical contract market an extensive range of high quality, competitively priced products that are quick and easy to install and would help save contractors time and money on a vast range of projects. Fast forward to 2022/23 and there are now 14 sales team members and Issue 4 of the Ovia catalogue has just been launched, showcasing more than 900 individual product lines.

With its extensive collection of luminaires, installers can have confidence that in the Ovia range they will find a lighting solution to fit every possible project they are working on. All sectors are covered including domestic, commercial, industrial, utility, amenity, emergency lighting and floodlighting. The lighting offer is further enhanced with a full range of lighting control solutions that will optimise energy saving credentials.

Contractor engagement

Engagement with contractors has been a key element in driving the new product development programme across the Scolmore Group of companies and Ovia is no exception. Regular interaction with contractors via social media, trade magazines and face to face at exhibitions and trade shows is how Ovia gains

constructive insight into how contractors like to work, the issues they face and what they need to help them do their work in the most time-efficient and cost effective way. It is this valuable feedback from contractors working on the job and often in challenging environments that helps to drive the new product development programme and determines which products make it onto the wholesalers’ shelves.

Spotlight on the premium range

More than 900 individual product lines now make up the total Ovia offer. Sitting within the overall collection is the premium range of products which comes under the well known Inceptor brand, and we are excited to take the wraps off the new products that have been added to this collection.

Inceptor Duo is a sleek up and down dimmable linear luminaire. It offers installers and their clients a complete custom dual lighting solution and is perfect for accentuating design features both high and low. ITTAKES 2

The use of DALI protocol to automatically test and monitor emergency lighting is wellestablished across the globe. It is internationally recognised as a reliable and robust solution that meets the safety critical requirements of the sector.  Emergency lighting is a key aspect of any fire safety system and must undergo monthly function and yearly duration testing. Prior to the development of DALI, this was carried out manually by turning a key switch on a wall, observing the result, and maintaining the logbook. This was highly time-consuming for those managing multiple sites and estates. DALI has therefore made a huge difference to the sector and for those with responsibility for monitoring and testing.

The most up-to-date version of DALI is DALI-2, which offers improved interoperability between different manufacturers’ products through mandatory certification. It also offers more features that its original iteration, including energy data, and the addition of control devices which weren’t included in the original DALI.

Recently, the DALI Alliance extended its DALI-2 certification program to include DALI Emergency which opens up the potential for integration into building management systems. This in turn brings a number of benefits.

Path to DALI-2 Emergency

DALI emergency lighting has been in operation for many years, offering a great deal of advantages with regards to testing

David Allcock, Mackwell’s Technical Manager, looks at the advancement of DALI-2 to cover DALI Emergency, and the benefits this offers to the emergency lighting sector.
SPECIAL REPORT 24 OCTOBER2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

and monitoring. While DALI-2 has been operational for general lighting, it is only now that DALI-2 Emergency is being introduced. It will be released in two stages across 2022-2023. DALI-2 Ed. 1 (2022), which is now open for registrations, will cover test sequences for improved interoperability. And, due for release in 2023, DALI-2 Ed.2 will include a range of advanced functions including diagnostics, data, reliability features, and more.

Benefits of DALI-2

As previously explained, DALI-2 offers improved compatibility between different manufacturers' products, thanks to mandatory certification. This means that lighting designers and specifiers are not locked into one brand or range and can choose the best certified product from any provider. For wholesalers, this will open up opportunities when one brand or product family is unavailable or out of stock, as other manufacturers’ solutions can be utilised.

In today’s technology, advanced systems for managing charge through embedded software – which also include diagnostics – are already available. These will be developed into a standard range of features in DALI-2 Ed.2.

This is a significant step forward in the adoption of DALI-2 as the protocol of choice for smart emergency systems, and consequently even smarter buildings.

Key sector developments

Even with the rising popularity of DALI, it is not entirely uncommon to find that in existing properties, testing is still run by a single facilities management team. As a leading provider of technology solutions for the global lighting industry, Mackwell has created a smart, automated system to streamline this process and use technology to assist in these challenges.

The N-Light CONNECT+ DALI emergency lighting test and monitoring system removes complexity and focuses on safety. It provides an advantage that was not available before: being able to

view the status of emergency installations at any time, from anywhere - all on one single interface, by modifying these existing buildings with innovative new technologies. It is a complete, scalable and integrated monitoring solution that allows wired and wireless monitoring as well as cloud connectivity all in one system.

Utilising a single touch panel, users can control up to 1,024 devices, creating simple fault reports for quick rectification. Monitoring and maintenance can be achieved through the Mackwell Configurator software, which creates an automated tree format to view and issue commands to 1,000 devices.

The system offers a great number of benefits. Firstly, it removes the need for

continuous site safety checks, saving a significant amount of time. It also improves the accuracy of detecting faults by offering real-time system updates. This allows management teams to know exactly which part of a building and site needs attention.

Having smart infrastructure and automated processes in place makes the entire operation easier to run, saving time so that facilities managers can focus on more complex tasks. Furthermore, it allows for more secure record-keeping, accurately logging the record of each test being performed, its result, and any previously detected issues. Test reports can be accessed easily from any location through a device such as a laptop or tablet.

Seamless integration

Ultimately, DALI-2 Emergency raises the bar for emergency lighting systems, providing facilities managers with the confidence that technologies will work together seamlessly now and for the lifetime of the system.

Overall, DALI-2 provides seamless integration of these products and will assist greatly with the future safety of occupants of a building. This is undoubtedly a change to be welcomed and embraced across the emergency lighting sector.

A ROYAL SUCCESS

Since its launch in 2018, the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA)’s programme of product knowledge training modules has gone from strength to strength, and in August 2022 picked up a prestigious Princess Royal Training Award. Tracy Hewett, the EDA’s Head of Training and Education, explains how the modules started life and some milestonesimportantachieved on the way.

Professional training and development is one of the key pillars of the EDA’s support for member businesses, and it has never been more important. We are all aware of the UK skills shortage and that every sector in the economy is competing to entice individualstalentedtojoin them. It is a real advantage for the electrotechnical sector to have access to a bespoke training programme, and such a positive message to share when you are interviewing people and with your Businessesteams.along the supply chain need to speak the same language and understand the increasingly hi-tech products. Well trained team members are motivated, confident, self-reliant and worth their weight in gold to any business. They better understand customer needs, can work more independently, and be on the lookout for cross-selling and upselling opportunities.

The EDA is fortunate in that when we decided to embark on creating the programme of product knowledge training modules we had access, through our diverse membership, to an unparalleled breadth and depth of the latest product expertise. Developing 12 modules was a two-year collaborative process

In residential environments where appliances, devices and other power requirements exist in droves, modular frames are increasingly popular with homeowners who want installation flexibility when it comes to standalone or combined fixtures for lighting, switching, telecomms, network and charging requirements.

Traditional ‘white plastic’ installations revolving around a handful of two-gang sockets around and above the counter tops of a kitchen or the skirting boards of a sitting room, complemented by a light switch or even dimmer, just aren’t

sufficient for modern living demands.

Although modular fittings are well established in the trade, 20 years ago it would be unusual to find a house with satellite, telephone, or FM sockets adjacent to the television, let alone RJ-45 ethernet ports and being (then) Category 5e cabled throughout. From the traditional electrical installation perspective, the increase in requirements since then means either an unwieldy number of outlets and accessories at any given point of use; or an installation that rapidly dates and fails to meet the current and near future needs of the user.

Momentum

This is where modular comes in for installers dealing with media and tech savvy consumers. A mainstay of commercial applications for decades, uptake has been relatively slow in domestic refurbishment and rewire situations. This has gained significant momentum recently, to the benefit of the installer and the distributor, for whom comprehensive ranges of accessories are available.

Twenty years ago, a homeowner would struggle to comprehend the variety and breadth of 25x50mm and 50x50mm euro modules on offer to the homeowner of

Others would be less familiar such as those incorporating HDMI outlets, DAB radio, and quadplexes delivering two satellite outputs, combined with a combination of TV, FM or DAB. And all of these co-existing in faceplates incorporating 13A or 5A socket modules as required. More recent innovations would include dual USB 18W QC/45W USBPD A+C modular outlets, PIR sensors, and touchless switches.

Workplaces continually evolve but the impact of the pandemiccoronavirusandrapid

technological innovation are accelerating the process.Thequestion is how can wholesalers provide power distribution technology for smart buildings, as innovative technologies continue to drive change?

Out with the old…

As most wholesalers will have found, there is high demand for technology that can assist with reconfiguration and upgrade projects,as more and more occupiers adopt hot desking and hybrid

home/office working models. As a result, there has also been a significant trend for flexible power distribution layouts to be installed in coworking environments and serviced offices.

The key to futureproofing a building services upgrade is to combine an understanding of the current needs of the occupier with insight into evolving trends. Wi-Fi, virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), Bluetooth and radio frequency identification system (RFID) enabled tech all present the potential for sudden and exponential change, so the focus for the power distribution network needs to remain on flexibility. It may be

that occupants now need fewer electrical sockets and more USB, wireless and data driven connectivity, so a power distribution system should provide the flexibility to work with changing layouts and varying demand.

For buildings already using a powertrack or power hub power distribution system, adjusting to new working practices is easier because they are designed to enable adaptations during the lifespan of the installation. Additional tap-offs and/or a reconfiguration of the tap-off scheme allows a revised layout of floor boxes and grommets, sockets and workstations to be carried out quickly and easily.

Energy saver

An essential area to consider is sustainability. Developers, landlords, owners and occupiers are increasingly accountable for the environmental performance of commercial buildings. Therefore, it’s important that a power distribution system has a long, low maintenance service life, to reduce the potential for strip-out and waste, even if an occupiers’ needs should change. Use of a high quality powertrack system, which has a proven extended service life and can be reconfigured or scaled up as required, is an ideal response to this imperative.

As the commercial property sector continues to adjust to new working cultures and practices, Paul Allen, head of power distribution at CMD, explains the need for flexibility when it comes to the specification of power distribution systems.
WIRING ACCESSORIES
32 OCTOBER2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Automated or manual switching is another solution for more sustainable power distribution networks. Bespoke solutions can be configured that enable an ‘all off’ power down out of office hours. It is likely that this type of energy saving solution will become more commonplace as office occupiers continue to implement carbon reduction plans and are held accountable for demonstrable environmental improvements by their customers.

Staying the course

Environmental performance must be balanced with resilience, however. For commercial office occupiers in sectors that rely on mission critical computerised systems, such as the banking and broadcast industries, the ability to switch from the main distribution to the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) may also need to be incorporated in a power distribution system design.

This can be done using either a powertrack or power hub distribution system, with colour coded tap-offs to ensure each feed is easily identifiable. With continued volatility in the energy sector, there is potential to see an increasingly strong focus on resilience over the next few years, so dual feed installations may become more commonplace.

How low can you go?

A powertrack installation is usually the most appropriate option for power distribution systems in new build developments, but older buildings can be more challenging.

Unlike contemporary buildings, where floor voids have usually been designed with sufficient capacity for the level of services required, heritage or older buildings often have shallow or uneven floor voids. This can mean that they are unsuitable for a powertrack system because the tap-offs

are made to the top of the track and require sufficient clearance for maintenance or reconfiguration.

The traditional response to insufficient or inconsistent floor voids is to opt for a hardwired electrical network or to raise the floor to increase the void space, but this can compromise headroom. A power hub system provides a convenient alternative to a conventional powertrack and overcomes the issue of shallow or inconsistent floor voids, while offering the same ease of installation, maintenance and reconfiguration benefits.

Problem solver

Power hub systems have tap-offs located to the side of each unit, rather than above, making them a much more suitable for shallow and undulating floor voids. They can be specified in 4-way and 6-way units and combine compact hub units with flexible metal conduits or ‘umbilicals’, which connect the hubs together to create the electrical distribution network.

The metal flexible conduits provide cables with mechanical protection, allowing compliance with Wiring Regulation 543.7 Earthing requirements for the installation of equipment having high protective conductor currents. They also protect cables from dirt ingress and rodents, ensuring a similar level of resilience to powertrack systems and

ensuring that the electrical distribution system offers a low maintenance, fit and forgetTap-offssolution.use BS EN 61535 compliant connectors in a metal housing to ensure a secure and safe connection. A choice of tap-off units allows electrical supply to be routed to the required locations, while minimising the number of hub units required. This keeps costs and installation times down and optimises void space. Additional hub units or tap-offs to existing units can be retrofitted to the installation at any time, with no additional space required for plugging in or unplugging tap-offs and the potential to configure multiple power hubs together on a single circuit.

Readiness for change

Change in the workplace is nothing new –even those whose working lives can be counted in years rather than decades know that. However, the impact of the pandemic, technological innovation and the emergence of jobs that never previously existed are all accelerating change. Building services need to be ready to adapt, so building the flexibility to reconfigure existing power distribution networks without time-consuming, expensive and wasteful strip-out is vital.

MAKE THE CONNECTION

Did you know it’s reportedly three times cheaper to run an electric car than a petrol model? In addition, the average modern electric car has over 200 miles of range. According to a report published by Research Dive, the global EV charging cable market is predicted to garner a revenue of $1,277.7 million by 2026 and grow at a CAGR of 31.5% over the forecast period from 2019-2026.

In a world of evolving technologies and the stats mentioned above, it’s no surprise that the demand for electric cars is on the rise and EV charging cables are quickly becoming a hot topic in the electrical wholesale market. We’re taking a closer look at what these EV cables are and what they do.

Cable types

We’ll look at two different types of cable here that we refer to as ‘EV Cable’. Firstly, the infrastructure cable stocked at SecuriFlex which is used in the installation of the electric vehicle charging points. Secondly, there is what’s known as flexible 'tail' cable complete with connectors, which is used when connecting the car to the charging point. The latter is made to EN50620 / IEC62893-3 and is often H07BZ5-F type, which is either provided with the wall outlet or supplied with the car itself.

Our EV cables are designed for use in the installation of electric vehicle charging points. This innovative cable offers a complete solution for where both power and data are required, achieving a quicker, easier and neater installation. The benefit of this of course is being able to use just a single cable, compared with a previously complicated system of pulling in multiple cable types to achieve the same result. The EV cable consists of power conductors and data cables that are rated to the same nominal voltage; therefore, segregation of

The EV revolution is gathering pace and cabling options are now plentiful, with complete solutions delivering data as well as power. Alex Houlton of Securi-Flex examines the possibilities.
DATA & NETWORKING PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER OCTOBER2022 35

power and data is not required.

Available in three core and five core variations that meet the requirements of single and three phase EV charge points respectively, the cable incorporates power conductors and a two core screened data cable, encapsulated in a double sheathed design for extra protection. These cables are designed to be installed in air, clipped to surface, on cable tray/ ladder work and embedded in concrete. The cables can be laid direct in the ground providing that suitable mechanical protection is in place.

Port of call

Just like charging your phone, each type of vehicle model will require a different kind of cable to make the right connection. There’s a port on the car and another on the charging station and the cable will need to plug in to both of them. Most electric cars will have one of two different cable connector plugs, these are aptly named Type 1 and Type 2 connectors.

Type 1 and Type 2 plugs are used to charge at ‘slow' or ‘fast' speeds. Type 1 plugs can reach a maximum of around

Smart features:

High-end EV are now equipped with a number of interesting new features. Tesla has recently introduced ‘Dog Mode’ - drivers with pets in the car can use the Overheat Cabin Protection function to keep the car at a cool temperature for pets left inside. The car also displays a large message on the centre touchscreen panel which informs passers-by that all is well and the pet is being kept at a comfortable temperature.

7kW, while Type 2 chargers can go all the way up to 22kW, if your car is enabled for this level of charging of course - meaning Type 1 plugs cannot take advantage of the higher charging speeds that Type 2 cables can typically charge at.

For now, Type 2 plugs are more popular than all others and are largely considered the standard cable in the EV world. You can identify a Type 2 charging cable by counting the 'pins' in the connector – there should be five holes with actual pins inside, and then another two holes at the bottom.

Type 1 cables however, have five pins in their connectors with a latch on top, which fixes to charging ports and stops the cable from being accidentally removed during a charging session.

Expansion plans

It's becoming more evident that the UK's charging network needs to expand, as the results of The National Home Energy Survey highlighted that 69% of UK residents said they would buy an EV if money were no object. A further 17% plan to buy one in the next 12 months, making the need to increase charging stations (both public and residential) a pressing issue.

BASICINSTINCTS

With this month’s big price hike, energy saving is on everyone’s lips, but the cost-of-living crisis is biting across the board. Money is tight all round, and a lot of people will not be able to make big financial commitments to smart technology solutions that are going to take many years to pay for themselves. You need to be ready to offer fast, affordable solutions.

That’s not to say that your installer customers shouldn’t be investing in their own future by upskilling to high end smart technology in the longer term. Timeguard’s parent company, Theben, is a leading supplier of KNX-compatible products, and after all, I’m a big believer in KNX. For reference, KNX is the installer friendly open protocol that doesn’t tie your customers (or you!) into a single source of devices; instead enabling them to build tailored smart systems using compatible products from multiple manufacturers.

But right here, right now, and with government support seemingly tinkering around the edges of the problem, worried homeowners will want to see immediate impact on their utility bills. They are savvy to the flaky low-end gadgets, so forget them and make sure you’re stocked up with practical, proven, easy-to-use energy

saving devices that are both affordable and reliably smart enough to have a competitive edge. There’s no doubt that the idea of smart home and smart office control has taken root, and that Wi-Fi control sells! People love it and, given the assurance of a good brand behind the devices they choose, they trust it too. The Timeguard range gets the balance between reliable smart tech and affordability just right.

The basics of switching off and saving Among the most popular of Timeguard’s easy install solutions to avoid leaving lights and space and water heaters on when they are not needed are our fused spur timers.

These are direct replacements for traditional fused spurs, fitting onto the old back plate. They still provide fused protection but are also sophisticated electronic timers. The newest, smart addition to the range is Wi-Fi-enabled, giving users complete control from wherever they can get online. There’s even an IP66 weatherproof version. What smart control could be simpler to install or use? Other affordable Wi-Fi devices focused on energy saving include 13A (3kW) twin sockets with a USB port. Daily and weekly timing programmes and countdown timing are offered via the smart app, with each socket under individual control. Also available is an in-line adaptor for use with existing ceiling lights or appliances. It’s even small enough to be tucked in through the ceiling aperture.

Smart security

It’s not just energy saving that can be smart. Safety and security have long been reasons to install automatic timing and switching, especially for outdoor lights, where they can deter unwanted guests and light the way to the door for those that are welcome. Now we are also increasingly keen on local surveillance too, and devices like Timeguard’s indoor Wi-Fi camera are ideal for that. The LEDPROCAM kills both

birds with one stone as the Wi-Fi camera is built into the PIR unit. As it draws on the mains power to the LED light, there’s no extra wiring. The Wi-Fi connection shows end users who’s approaching their door, or on their driveway etc.

If an indoor camera is preferred, choose one that offers high-resolution and two-way audio, night vision, and detector

camera enables people to check who is outside. Make sure the ones you supply have everything installers need to get their customers set up – it’s surprising how many Wi-Fi doorbells come without a chime or the ability to use multiple chimes.

SMART TECHNOLOGY

HOMECOMFORTS

Scolmore continues to develop its ClickSmart+ home automation range to bring an ever increasing range of accessible, easy to install and operate, smart solutions to market – benefiting the end user, installer and wholesaler.

In the last 12 months alone, the company has added numerous products to the range, as it listens to feedback from contractors out working on the job and comes up with solutions to meet specific requirements.

Smart home décor

At the beginning of the year a raft of decorative smart sockets was added to the range to meet the demand from consumers and building owners for more stylish finishes for the smart products on display in their homes and properties. One and 2-gang smart sockets were introduced in some of the company’s most popular ranges - Definity screwless, Deco+ premium decorative and Deco decorative wiring accessories ranges. These joined the established and highly popular range of Mode

antimicrobial and antiviral smart products.

This was followed by the launch of the Click Smart+ Smart Scenario Switch which is designed to control lights and appliances from any location. The battery powered wireless smart scenario switch allows the control of multiple lights and appliances and, with one click, you can create multiple smart solutions, bringing added convenience, comfort, security, energy saving and ultimately more control in the home.

There are many possibilities. You can create different atmospheres for each room by personalising the lights; you can pair the smart switch to the ClickSmart+ or ESP Fort Security devices to enhance security; you can set routines for lights and appliances to turn on and off as required to help create a more energy efficient home.

Smart lighting effects

In July the collection of smart home products was extended once again with the introduction of the Smart RGBW LED Tape Controller. This is a wireless control

solution that allows you to regulate LED tape lighting whenever and wherever you are via the ClickSmart+ app.

The Smart LED Tape Controller can be used with the ClickSmart+ app to create a wide range of lighting effects to suit the mood or occasion required. There are three different modes available – White, Colour and Music. White mode allows control of the brightness of the LED tape, while with the Colour (RGB) mode you can choose any colour to create a range of lighting effects. With the ClickSmart+ app open and set to ‘Music’ the LED tape will change colour with the music. Smart solutions in a box

The most recent addition to the ClickSmart+ portfolio is a range of new Smart Socket Kits launched mid-September. These new kits bring together essential components in one handy box allowing users to maximise and simplify connected products in all areas of their homes.

One of the most popular uses for a smart plug is to control lighting as a visual deterrent for intruders. The scheduling feature available on the new Click Smart+ Smart Sockets allows devices to be turned on or off at certain times to suit, for example, while the house is empty. Other uses can include operating devices such as electric heaters, fans and radios to name just a few.

Available in Scolmore’s popular Mode white finish, the range comprises a 13A 2 Gang Smart Socket Kit, a 13A Plug-in Wi-Fi Smart Socket Kit, and the Aquip66 13A 2 Gang Outdoor Smart Socket Kit.

13A 2 Gang Smart Socket Kit – this includes a ClickSmart+ Hub and 4 x 2 Gang Smart Sockets. The Click Smart+ Hub utilises Zigbee technology, one of the most widely adopted smart home technologies. The Hub communicates with the individual sockets through a mesh network which creates multiple pathways for the connection of multiple smart home devices without compromising signal and communication range.

13A Plug-in Wi-Fi Smart Socket Kit – this includes 4 x 13A Plug-In Wi-Fi Smart Sockets. These smart sockets do not require a hub but are simply plugged into a standard socket and connected to the WiFi to offer connectivity to a range of appliances, such as lamps, radios, kettles.

Aquip66 13A 2 Gang Outdoor Smart Socket Kit – this includes a Smart Hub, 1 x Mode 13A 2 Gang Zigbee Smart Socket and a 2 Gang Waterproof Enclosure. This kit allows the connectivity of devices being operated outside the home such as outdoor lighting and outdoor features.

These smart products can be controlled through the ClickSmart+ app and can also be controlled through voice control via an Amazon Alexa or Google Home speaker. These latest additions are featured in the updated ClickSmart+ brochure, which showcases the entire ClickSmart+ Home Automation range.

SMART TECHNOLOGY

ESP continually invests in its CCTV range to enhance the products, harness the latest technologies and broaden the offer to satisfy many project sizes and requirements. The latest development of the category sees the launch of a brand new 24/7 Colour IP CCTV range, which will take its CCTV offering to another level.

GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOUR

When it comes to CCTV security, vitalinformationcolour-relatedcanplayaroleinidentifying

the detail of activities, particularly in the hours of darkness. Conventional cameras with infrared lighting will only provide black and white images for night-time monitoring. This can result in people or vehicles, for example, appearing blurred and blending into the background, making it difficult to discern crucial elements. ESP’s new 24/7 colour CCTV range will provide sharp detail, in colour, day or night.

The new 24/7 Colour IP POE CCTV range is designed to offer superior, reliable and straightforward installation solutions for a range of applications from domestic through to larger and more complex commercial projects. The range will sit alongside ESP’s

established CCTV offer which comprises the HDView IP PoE 5MP range, designed for larger and more complex commercial projects, and the Rekor IP PoE 2MP range, which is tailored for the domestic market.

There are 18 individual products that make up the new 24/7 Colour CCTV range. This includes 12 cameras offering 2MP, 5MP and 8MP resolutions and each one is available in a choice of dome or bullet camera designs and in a white or grey finish. There are six different NVRs available including a 4 channel NVR in the Rekor IP collection. The HDView IP PoE range consists of 8MP NVRs with a broad range of channel options available; 4, 8, 12, 16, 32 and 64-channels. There is also a number of two and four camera kits available in the Rekor IP 24/7 range, with a choice of dome or bullet camera design options and a white or grey finish.

Lights, Camera, Action

The main features in the new range are in the cameras themselves due to the ‘24/7’ colour function. The cameras use low light image sensors, which are able to use background light to produce a colour image in reduced light environments. This means that individuals and vehicles, for example, can be identified more clearly at night or where light settings are low. If the background light is insufficient for the low light image sensors to produce a colour image, the white LEDs on the cameras have the facility to activate by virtual line crossing and permitter intrusion set by the user.

All cameras have an IP67 rating for external use. They are equipped with infrared LEDs which are the default mode when the white LEDs are not in activation mode. This ensures that the white LEDs are not on constantly, which will be unwanted by the majority of users. The cameras also include a discreet microphone and speaker for two-way audio function which is controlled via the app - ESP IP PRO.

SPECIALREPORT 42 OCTOBER2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

By offering a selection of 2MP, 5MP and 8MP cameras each in a choice of dome and bullet designs and in a white or grey colour finish, ESP believes this comprehensive offer will have appeal across a broad range of installation sizes and requirements.

Action replay

The main feature of the NVRs in the new 24/7 Colour CCTV systems is that they offer 8MP recording. In other words, they offer support for high resolution cameras in record, playback and live view modes. With a choice of 4-64 Channel NVRs available, ESP is providing a breadth of NVR capability to support a range of applications from small to large.

Other features and benefits include: 250 PoE function. PoE models provide greater flexibility to the installer by supporting cameras up to 250 metres, resulting in the need for fewer additional power supplies and PoE switches required for large cable runs.

Pre-installed Surveillance Hard Drive. ESP pre-installs purpose-built surveillance hard drives. Unlike standard PC hard drives, surveillance drives are designed to operate and handle data recording continuously.Intelligent record options such as line crossing and perimeter detection. This offers a flexible choice on what triggers the system to record, resulting in more critical recordings and reduced wasted recorded footage.

There are eight Rekor IP 24/7 kits providing all the 24/7 Colour features in a convenient kit form. There is a fourchannel two camera kit version available as well as a four camera option. Both are offered in a choice of dome or bullet camera design and in a white or grey finish. The kits come with cable supplied and a pre-installed surveillance hard drive. All cameras and NVRs in ESP’s extensive 24/7 CCTV range are 100% NDAA Compliant.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE

next step in its lighting evolution with the inclusion of SpektroLED Tilt to the configurable, Knightsbridge SpektroLED series. SpektroLED offers so many combinations of wattage, colour temperature and bezel choice that the product provides a genuine 40-in-1 fire-rated downlighting solution, now in both fixed and tilt versions.

With the introduction of SpektroLED, Knightsbridge has removed the limitations of traditional downlights, offering versatility, performance and style in one unique package, and allowing for customisation and personalisation of lighting design without resorting to multiple lamp types.

The new SpektroLED Tilt variant increases the options again. Like the fixed model, SpektroLED Tilt offers a choice of two wattages – 5W and 8W – five colour temperatures (CCTs) and five bezel finishes, from white and matt black to chrome, polished chrome and brass; resulting in 40 different style and performance permutations.

The wattages and CCTs are switch-selected on the rear of the downlight body. At 5W, SpektroLED delivers up to 465 lumens and up to 795 lumens at 8W. The four CCTs available are 2700K, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K, representing warm white through to daylight. The choice of five bezels then allows further customisation to complement or contrast with any interior décor or colourway.

SCOLMORE MODULAR CONTACTORS

Scolmore continues to expand its Elucian consumer unit range to provide electricians with the broadest possible range of units and protectives devices to cater for all installation requirements. New to Elucian is a range of 2 Pole (20A) or 4 Pole (25A, 40A and 63A) modular contactors in a variety of normally open or normally closed contact configurations compatible with the Elucian range of consumer units.

A contactor is an electrically controlled switch similar to a relay – essentially low voltage circuit component used for switching a higher-current electrical power circuit (more than 15 amps or a few kw). It can be connected directly to devices with a high load, as it has rapid open and closing features designed to control and suppress the electrical arc discharged when a heavy motor current is interrupted. It is not, however, designed as a circuit breaker to interrupt a short circuit current.

The new Elucian 2 pole 20A modular contactors are 18mm in width and will take up one space/way inside a consumer unit. The Elucian 4 pole 25A modular contactors are 36mm in width and will take up two spaces/ways inside a consumer unit. The Elucian 4 pole 40A and 63A modular contactors are 54mm in width and will take up three spaces/ways inside a consumer unit.

LEDVANCE

LIGHTING PRODUCTS

LEDVANCE is showcasing its innovative portfolio of lighting products that conform to recent changes in the RoHS directive. The legislation, which regulates the use of mercury in lighting products, was revised in Spring 2022 by the UK/EU commission, impacting what products are permitted on the market for installations.

The use of mercury in lighting products was already prohibited in accordance with the RoHS directive. However, the directive had previously included exemptions for T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases (CFLni), HPD lamps and special-purpose lamps (e.g. UV-C lamps). Now, these exemptions, defined in Annex III of the regulation, have been amended by the EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. The industry can expect a ban on all CFLni lamps from February 2023, and a ban on all T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps from August 2023. The amendments to RoHS signify the end for all T5/T8 fluorescent lamps and compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases in general lighting, which will have a significant impact on customers who are currently using these products. Many types of halogen lamps are already banned and this prohibition is also being progressively further extended. From September 2023 halogen pin lamps can also no longer be placed on the market.

Though the change is likely to cause anxiety for those in the lighting industry, LEDVANCE has chosen to present its portfolio in a way that simplifies the process for installers and wholesalers. The portfolio lists a product from the ban alongside a compliant alternative that can be substituted in its place. As LED products from LEDVANCE already greatly exceed the minimum requirements for lighting, this portfolio is thought to provide customers with innovative and futureproof solutions.

BRIGHT IDEAS FOR WHOLESALERS FROM SYLVANIA LIGHTING

Sylvania Lighting is committed to helping wholesalers make the most of opportunities to sell its LED solutions. Not only is this a positive in terms of initial sales from customers, but Sylvania is also confident that customers will return time and time again to buy from its expert range.

Wholesalers can make use of Sylvania’s comprehensive range of point-of-sale displays. These include a four-shelf free standing display unit, which has options for a variety of different solutions. A quarter pallet

display bin is another great choice, as is the multi-lamp free-standing display unit. This allows wholesalers to mix and match what they promote and display.

Completing the offering are Sylvania branded ceiling tiles that

can be used to promote pendants and fire-rated downlights. These are two of Sylvania’s best-sellers, so wholesalers who make it clear these solutions are stocked will be able to capitalise on sales and potentially attract new customers.

All store promotions are run through each wholesaler’s dedicated Sylvania Rep. Wholesalers can get in touch with Sylvania’s customer service team to find out who their local Rep is if they are unsure.

a common project and common values, we apply our values to our daily routines and supply chain.

Simple and actionable principles

We prefer to do business with suppliers which have an effective environmental policy, one which is formally set out and is responsible. At the very least, we ensure that suppliers do indeed comply with their legal obligations regarding theWeenvironment.optimisethe loading of our trucks in order to reduce the environmental footprint of product transport. We solely use recyclable materials for palletisation. As far as possible we use cardboard for packaging (instead of plastic) and avoid polystyrene where possible.

● We regularly carry out value analyses in order to keep the materials we use to a strict minimum. We also carry out an impact study before we start using a new consumable component as part of our production process.

● We favour the choice of recyclable materials, with low environmental impacts:

● The oil used in our radiators does not contain any additives which are harmful to the environment.

● We have reduced the amount of glycol in the mixture used in our towel rails.

● One of the production sites we use is already certified ISO14001, a second has begun the accreditation procedure, and a third complies with the main requirements of the standard.

● We sort and recover waste in all our manufacturing sites (aluminium, steel, plastic, electronics, cardboard).

● We apply a strict recycling waste policy in our production sites to prevent any risk of pollution: Special facilities (e.g. holding tanks and local

decontamination resources) are dedicated to operations relating to fluids, during storage and during the course of production processes. These actions exceed the requirements set out by regulations (i.e., the RoHS Directive and WEEE Directives) in terms of product development and manufacturing. It is our belief that each and every one amongst us understand, deploy and own these principles and actions, on a daily basis – because they are part of who we are and what we do.

Innovation
