WELCOME TO 2023!

Iresisted the urge to say Happy New Year because most people are bored with that now…and we are approximately 253 days into the New Year or that’s what it feels like. January is a long month, a very long month but once we have made it through to the end the rest of the year will fly by – I promise!

I often wonder how people start the year with things like Dry January, Veganuary or any other ‘giving something up for January’. If you are anything like me then you have committed to ‘get out of bed and get dressed every day in January’ – it gives you a certain sense of achievement at the end of the month and you can genuinely feel pleased with your efforts. If you managed anything else then I salute you – you are officially amazing!

Looking back at the January/February 2022 Viewpoint I can see that I optimistically titled it ‘Stumbling into 2022 blindfolded’. Clearly January 2022 wasn’t a great one! At that particular point in time Chris O’Shea, Chief Executive of British Gas had just gone on record to say that soaring energy prices could last up to two years. This was followed by the Institute for Fiscal Studies saying that a ‘typical’ household energy bill could be close to £2,000. At the time we were all a bit shocked by this announcement but I think most people would be happy with that now!

“ Professional Electricians Wholesaler is going up in the world and instead of just eight issues we will now be delivering ten, shiny and fabulous issues in 2023.”

Now we have the Energy Price Guarantee which reduced the unit cost of electricity and gas so that households with typical energy use in Great Britain will pay, on average, around £2,500 a year on their energy bill until 31 March 2023 – come back January 2022, all is forgiven.

It isn’t all bad news though. Why is that I hear you ask? Well, I have exciting news for you….. Professional Electricians Wholesaler is going up in the world and instead of just eight issues we will now be delivering ten, shiny and fabulous issues in 2023. I fully appreciate that this will in no way compensate for the massive hike in energy bills, or the fact that January has been the longest month EVER but you have to admit it is quite exciting.

Over the next twelve months you can look forward to ten packed issues which contain all of your favourite news and views together with features on all of the popular topics which will help you and your customers to buy wisely – now that is something to look forward to.

And for those of you who didn’t kick start 2023 with a hearty challenge for every day of January, fear not - a quick Google search tells me that you’re still in luck because with 28 days, February is so neatly divided into 4 weeks that it’s the perfect time to challenge yourself to something new every week………I’ll get my coat!

SCOLMORE GROUP AWARDED IHEEM AFFILIATE MEMBER STATUS

As Scolmore continues to build its portfolio of products and solutions dedicated to healthcare settings, it is delighted to announce that it has achieved IHEEM Company Affiliate Member status.

IHEEM (The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management) is an International Professional Engineering Institute, specialising in the Healthcare

Estates Sector. It was founded in 1943 and was originally called the Institute of Hospital Engineering until 1996.

As an IHEEM affiliate member Scolmore Group will have access to a range of benefits that will assist the company in delivering its growing range of specialist medical products to an audience of specifiers, contractors and installers working within healthcare establishments.

SECTOR OPTIMISM TEMPERED BY STAFF SHORTAGES

The latest engineering services sector survey shows that the majority of business owners and decision-makers expect their business performance to improve in the short term and beyond. The finding comes despite concerns about economic and recruitment challenges ahead.

The latest findings of the quarterly Building Engineering Business Survey, backed by trade bodies ECA, BESA, SELECT and SNIPEF, revealed that three quarters (75 percent) of engineering services businesses expected to perform better in Q4 2022 than one year ago, in

Q4 2021. Three quarters (74 percent) of respondents also expected their turnover to stay the same or increase by the end of Q4. Almost four out of five businesses (78 per cent) saw their turnover stay the same or increase between April and September (Q2 and Q3) last year, and

most seem to expect the trend to continue in the short term.

However, the survey revealed widespread recognition of the challenges ahead, as just over half (51 percent) listed staff shortages as their number one or number two worry for their business. More than half (52 percent) highlighted shortages in electrical skills as a particular concern.

Closely following was overriding concerns about price inflation of materials as there continues to be a global shortage of semi-conductors.

ECA Director of Legal and Business Rob Driscoll said: “Today’s engineering services landscape is more complex than ever. The major increase in energy prices has significantly increased demand for certain services, but residual concerns remain over material costs for all products requiring electronics.

“Continued labour shortages and growing worries about delivering fixed priced contracts continue to keep business owners up at night. This could indicate a near future where order books appear healthy, but work is delivered at negative margins. Contractors should be cautious in their optimism, as the effects of economic decline in 2023 will take some time to filter through to the engineering services sector and could be felt later on.”

UK ELECTRICIAN AWARDED MEDALLION FOR EXCELLENCE

Electrician Alex Rendall has been awarded a prestigious Medallion for Excellence after an outstanding performance at the WorldSkills 2023 competition in Salzburg, Austria.

Alex, who works for J Norris Electrical Contractor in Somerset, went up against 23 other electricians from around the world in an extremely complex design and installation project which included the wiring of a control panel and programming of various building automation functions. To meet the international skills standard and specification, Alex also had to train and work with materials and techniques not normally encountered in the UK.

After ranking in 6th place globally, Alex received the special Medallion for

Excellence which is only given to the top performers alongside the gold, silver and bronze medal winners.

National Electrotechnical Training (NET) has been charting Alex’s success since he competed in the SkillELECTRIC competition, organised by NET, in 2019. SkillELECTRIC is part of the WorldSkills

competition network which meant that following his performance in the 2019 SkillELECTRIC final, Alex started a journey which culminated in him being selected to represent the UK electrical industry as part of ‘Team UK’, at WorldSkills 2022.

In the run up to the competition in Austria, Alex underwent a rigorous training regime with WorldSkills training expert, Geoff Shaw, to meticulously plan and practice the various elements and skills needed to compete at international level.

Speaking of his experience, Alex said: “It was fantastic, just being able to get up there and collect the medal, to walk away with something for my efforts. It was really nice to be able to stand there with my flag on the stage, it felt really special.”

Signify has teamed up with the University of Cambridge’s Estates Division to illuminate the University’s West Cambridge site with energy-efficient outdoor LED lighting.

With more than 300 new and upgraded lights, the project was delivered in six months – from initial discussions through to project completion – and is expected to generate significant cost savings on energy, annually (based on 2021 rates), which is all the more important against the backdrop of an ongoing energy crisis. In addition, the new LEDs require less maintenance time and will provide an improved night-time experience for the users of the site.

Dating back to 1920, West Cambridge is an important part of the University of Cambridge estate, with University and private tenants accessing roads, footpaths, parking and bus routes. The site’s enhanced

lighting design is part of a long-term development masterplan that aims to create a high quality, well-connected research environment that will enable the University and community to grow and flourish.

Over the decades, different generations of outdoor lighting have been installed around the site, leading to a mix of technologies and an inconsistent look and

feel. Philips TownTune luminaires will light the campus’s roads, paths and car parks as part of a site-wide development to provide consistency of design, improve wayfinding, and reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. In addition, the luminaires have an upward light output ratio of zero, therefore minimising sky glow and the impact on the night sky.

Each of the new luminaires is equipped with a unique QR code connected to the Signify Service Tag application. Site managers can scan the QR code to access documentation and data, configure the luminaire directly at the installation site, and access the latest spare part information, including any new generation updates. The Service Tag application also supports asset management data, allowing organisations to document information to better manage lighting assets.

In an effort to grow their business, the proprietors of family-run bakers, Bruno’s, made the decision to relocate from their original premises in the Warwickshire village of Studley, near Stratford upon Avon to a much larger site in the same village, where they could significantly expand their business.

With much of their custom over the years having come from local company, ESP, the owners didn’t hesitate to get ESP involved with the project to kit out the new business property with fire protection and security solutions.

Following a visit to the new premises to understand the requirements, the fire design team at ESP recommended the MAGDUO two-wire fire alarm system, and a 4-zone, two-wire fire panel, in black housing to suit the interior, was selected.

The MAGDUO two-wire fire alarm system is aimed at small to medium contractors, offering them a highly flexible and adaptable system that will save them time and money on the installation process, making it perfect for the bakery’s requirements.

Installed at the same time from the fire protection range was the MAGDUO FlexiPoint detector - an essential component product for the MAGDUO two wire fire system. As well as offering seven different modes of fire detection including combined heat and smoke, the FlexiPoint detector is also available with an inbuilt sounder or inbuilt sounder strobe, which will assist with a compact install solution (as the detector and sounder is all-in-one as opposed to separate units).

Having satisfied the fire alarm system requirement, ESP was also called on to

provide the CCTV security protection for the premises. There were a number of requirements that the owners wanted fulfilled with CCTV coverage for the internal seating areas, bar areas as well as the external veranda, car park and roof top area. ESP’s HDView IP 5MP CCTV system was selected to provide the best solution. This range is designed to offer superior, reliable and straightforward installation solutions and is particularly suitable for larger applications with its wide choice of NVRs and camera selection.

EDA POWER IT UP CONFERENCE IDENTIFIES FUTURE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

Working together to seize opportunities and offset challenges was the theme of the Electrical Distributors’ Association’s (EDA) inaugural large-scale one-day conference – under the banner of Power It Up – held on Wed 16 November in Edgbaston.

Power It Up brought together senior business leaders from the electrotechnical supply chain – manufacturers, wholesalers, and contractors – for presentations, panel discussions and networking.

The Power It Up conference attracted over 170 delegates from across the supply chain and related trade associations including the ECA, BEAMA and the British Cables Association (BCA). EDA President, Chris Ashworth and EDA CEO, Margaret Fitzsimons, opened the conference, and the keynote address was given by B2B business strategist Ian Heller, who flew into the UK from his base in Colorado, USA

specifically to address the conference on the topic of ‘Changing supply channel – the shift to online: threats and opportunities’. A programme of high calibre speakers included Professor Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association who gave delegates the forecasts for construction sector for

PRODUCT DATA SHEETS

EDATA, the data pool for the UK’s electrotechnical sector, has recently launched a Dynamic Data Sheet service for electrical wholesalers.

Until now wholesalers typically contacted each one of their manufacturer suppliers separately to request product information but this latest EDATA development means that full-colour data sheets for over 160,000 products can be printed on demand in branches.

This is the latest development in the evolution of the EDATA Data Pool, which

was launched in 2020 by the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA).

By logging on to the EDATA cloud-based portal, wholesaler branches can access product data and photographs from the 50+ (and counting) leading manufacturer brands. Downloading data sheets is one option as EDATA can also offer bulk download files which can feed ecommerce and business systems.

Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, said, “Wholesalers run busy branches and they tell us that one of their

Margaret Fitzsimons, EDA CEO, said “We are absolutely delighted with the response to Power It Up. It has provided the ideal opportunity to boost collaboration between the businesses along the three-step electrotechnical supply chain – manufacturers, wholesalers and contractors – and their trade associations, to discuss at a strategic level how we can work together to take full advantage of the move to electrification.”

The day conference was followed by an evening networking drinks reception and dinner, where the entertainment was provided by award-winning comedian and writer Dominic Holland.

COST OF LIVING CRISIS –MANAGING MONEY AND DEBT

Lots of us are finding ourselves struggling with the increase in our basic household bills, not to mention rents and mortgages. We’re seeing more and more people in the awful situation of not being able to pay bills, having to choose between putting the heating on or eating, and spiralling into debt because there just isn’t any more money. Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) want to offer some practical advice to make sure you’re receiving all the help you should be and where you can go for extra support. We’ve loads of information on our website but here’s a snapshot of the key things you can do:

● Don’t ignore it: Although it might feel like a way out, it’ll only make things worse and become a bigger problem.

● Benefits check: Are you getting everything you’re entitled to? We work with an amazing Charity called Step Change and they have a range of tools that most of our clients use. Check out a free benefits calculatorwww.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

● Know your priority debts: Council tax and rent/mortgage arrears are priority debts, meaning they need to be addressed to stop legal action or eviction. Make sure you have informed the relevant people if you’re behind and try to work out a payment plan. If you’re behind on your rent, you may qualify for the Breathing Space Scheme. This could give you up to 60 days respite from interest, fees, and court action.

● Do a financial MOT: Go through all your incomings and outgoings and be honest about what’s essential. Is your car too expensive? How many takeaways a week are you having? Do you need every streaming subscription? These

are the type of things that should be cut back before you miss a rent/mortgage payment. We’ve got a great budgeting tool that can helpwww.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-andmoney/budgeting/budgeting/work-outyour-budget/

● Gas and electricity bills: There’re lots of different schemes, grants, and government help for your fuel bills, we’ve highlighted the main ones below, but full details can be found here:

● Energy Bill Support Scheme: All households should be receiving £400 in six instalments – check your energy bills! There are three additional Cost of Living Payments; £650 one-off Cost of Living Payment for those on means-tested benefits, a £300 oneoff Pensioner Cost of Living Payment, for households that receive the Winter Fuel Payment, and a £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment

● Energy Supplier Grants: If you’re in debt with your Energy Suppliers they have grants available to help you pay the debt off. You can find out if you can apply for one of these grants on the Gov.UK website. The British Gas Energy Trust is open to anyone, not just British Gas customers, they may be able to help with gas or electricity arrears if you can’t get a grant from your current supplier

● Government Help: There are several Government schemes, including the Warm Home Discount Scheme. Depending on your situation, you may be able to get help, including money back on council tax, Cold Weather Payment, Winter Fuel Payment, and a boiler upgrade scheme

● If you can’t afford to eat: The Household Support Fund, provided by local authorities, has been increased by £500 million and extended until March 2023. To find out more and apply, contact your local council. There are also food banks, which don’t just provide food, but also make sure people get essential household items. The largest food bank organisation in the UK is our partner, the Trussell Trust, and we can refer you if you come to us for help. There are also lots of smaller, local groups running foodbanks, that can usually be found on social media.

We know that financial worries can have a massive impact on your mental health. If you’re feeling isolated, anxious, or depressed, counselling can really help with this, and the Charity is able to fund some sessions for you to get support with your mental health.

For this month’s Face to Face, we interviewed Micaela Abbott, recently appointed Sales Director at Megaman UK, to find out her views on the lighting sector.

FACE TO FACE

MEGAMAN

A. Since I joined Megaman in 2007, probably the most significant change has been the switch to LED lamps and the development of LED fixtures. In 2009, Megaman was the first company to launch a true replacement for halogen lamps - the LED Reflector Series with Thermal Conductive Highway (TCH) Technology –which was then extended in 2010 to include an MR16 LED and the innovative LED Candle. The Professional and Economy lamp series followed along with the IncandaLED range, evidence of the continued improvement of Megaman’s bread and butter product range – it’s lamps.

Furthermore, as the lifespan of LEDs increased, we found that lighting products were seen less as a commodity item and more as a long-term investment. As such, sales of our Professional range LEDs really took off. As did sales of our integrated fixtures, which provide a long working life, significant lumen capability and design flexibility as well as the benefit of a sleek fixture design. Fast forward to 2022 and we have just launched two new LED fixture ranges – Performa and Essentials –showing that demand for integrated LED fixtures continues to grow.

that could provide a reliable, everyday solution, so we stripped back all the features and benefits from our key products, to provide a reliable lumen package with a three year warrantee and at an economy price point. Since its launch, this Essentials range has generated a great level of demand and I’m sure that is to do with the quality of the product versus the price tag.

lumen output, colour temperature, beam angle etc, the product that the installer takes out will do the job required and satisfy the customer’s needs.

Q Could more be done to educate end users on the long-term savings of energy saving LED lamps and fixtures?

A. There is definitely more work to do. Our customer services team often receive calls from homeowners about replacing old CFLs like for like – so for some the changing legislation has simply passed them by. For those who have LEDs already, realising that there is more you can do to reduce energy use is key, for example, fitting motion sensors or utilising smart technology so that lighting is only activated when needed.

It’s also important to educate users that low wattage does not mean a poor level of light – an energy efficient, low wattage LED, can provide an excellent level of light and help keep energy bills down.

QWith costs rising at their highest rate for 40 years do you think there is a risk that installer and end user buying habits will be increasingly influenced by price alone?

QWhat

differences between the Performa and Essentials product ranges?

A. Essentials is designed to be your everyday go-to. Megaman had identified a gap in the market for a range of products

Performa, on the other hand, is a 5-year warrantied product range with added features and benefits. For example, our TEGO 2 Fire-Rated Downlight which comes with Dual Beam Technology (DBT), Colour Change Technology (CCT), multiple bezel options, microwave sensor capability and more. Crucially, several of our Performa fixtures offer an adaptable one-box solution - so regardless of desired

A. While more customers are realising that the old saying “buy cheap, buy twice” is true, I expect that over the coming months many people will be forced into thinking about initial purchase costs. Thankfully, with the launch of our Essentials range, we can deliver a reliable and cost-effective solution in these scenarios.

QIn such a crowded market how can wholesalers ensure they are stocking everything needed to cover all commercial or residential lighting applications?

A. Looking to adaptable, one-box solutions like our Performa range can help to alleviate stock issues in a crowded market. For the wholesaler, if they stock the Performa range, they can provide a single solution with a wide range of features and benefits straight off the shelf - instead of holding three or four basic products, one box can offer it all.

QWhat are the lighting trends wholesalers should keep an eye on in 2023 and what are Megaman’s plans for the year ahead?

A. For us the key trend emerging at the moment is efficiency, especially given the challenges around energy prices. Customers are looking beyond just the environmental benefits of energy efficiency to products that can make a noticeable difference to their bills. At

Megaman, we are focused on the continual development of innovative technology and control, so that we can offer those savings long-term and reduce operating costs for all end users.

Furthermore, in the pipeline over the next 12 to 18 months we have a number of exciting new product launching within both the Performa and Essentials ranges. We will also be announcing a new smart lighting product - but that’s still under wraps at the moment! What’s great about the Megaman product portfolio is that it never just stagnates. We are always looking at how we develop and evolve our ranges and at how we can better support our customers.

Unicrimp continues to expand its range of cable accessories and has introduced a brand new category of products to its portfolio.

WELL CONNECTED

Marketed under the new QNECT brand, the new range comprises lever connectors and connection boxes. The aim of the launch is to bring together a selection of products that work in conjunction with each other to provide installers with strong, quick and reliable solutions that will offer them versatility when carrying out their everyday tasks.

A total of 10 products make up the full Q-NECT range, which comprises two, three and five way lever connectors, IP66 weatherproof junction box, two and three way IP connection boxes and five pole, three way IP68 ‘T’ and to way inline connectors.

“ Lever operated connectors use screwless spring clamp technology which means there is no need for tools.”

Lever connectors

Suitable for solid, stranded and flexible cable types, these lever operated connectors use screwless spring clamp technology, which means there is no need for any tools. They feature an inspection window, which is located at the top of the lever connector and allows for quick and easy testing while the lever connector is installed.

They offer a strong and reliable connection, with a conductor range of 0.24mm. Because they are reusable, they are the perfect solution for temporary or mobile installations. The housing on all Unicrimp Q-NECT lever connectors are transparent which means that installers can easily see if the wires inside are positioned correctly to ensure the best possible connection.

Weatherproof junction box

Available in black and anthracite grey finishes, the IP66 junction box is designed to make installations more efficient. It can house four of the 3 Port Lever Connectors using the 360° detachable cradle and with a curved lid, it provides additional space

for wires. The lid is locked using quarter turn fasteners.

The junction box features 10 membrane entry points. Protection against moisture and dust is enhanced with the self-sealing membranes, which provide a faster and more secure cable entry whilst at the same time maintaining the IP66 rating.

Multiple fixing options are available –either fixing directly to a wall using four screws into the pre-moulded holes in the base or using the detachable wall clip which requires just two screws.

Installers have the option of using up to eight M20 cable glands with the junction box. The M20 threaded entries with membrane ensure that the IP rating is maintained without needing to use any tools or locknuts.

IP connection boxes

There are three products within the IP connection boxes range – the four pole two way 24A IP68 inline connection box; four pole three way 24A IP68 (M16+M20) connection box and three pole two way 16A IP66 connection box. Both IP68 rated boxes come pre-installed with IP68 rated nylon glands. The nylon glands provide a dust and watertight seal, as well as excellent strain relief and cable protection. To aid installation the hinged lid enables quick and easy access with suitable fixing points provided. This allows the connection box to be fixed wherever it is suited.

The IP68 connection box prevents exposure with a strong sealing performance. It can withstand dust, dirt and sand, and is also resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1m for up to 60 minutes. The more compact IP66 connection Box is also protected against direct high pressure jets.

‘T’ and inline connectors

High quality and robust materials produce a tough nylon body which helps ensure that the connectors can withstand the harshest of environments. Whatever the installation conditions, the cables will be fully secure.

The ‘T’ and inline connectors are supplied with five pole terminals. This provides the installer with a variety of wiring options, covering a large range of installations. The ‘T’ shape of the IP68 ‘T’ connector facilitates the install of an inline switch or additional powered output whilst also offering IP68 weatherproof protection, making it perfect for multiple installations.

The IP68 inline connector provides a quick and simple solution for outdoor fixtures. It can be used to extend or repair existing cables while maintaining its IP68 weatherproof protection.

DOWNTO THE WIRE

Electricians normally use several tools for different types of cable such as round, coaxial and data cable: the requirements of wire stripping differ too much to contain them in one tool. At least, that has been the case until now.

Versatility

With the KNIPEX ErgoStrip (16 95 01 SB), a number of tools can be left in the tool bag during installation work. This universal dismantling and wire stripping tool makes it possible to dismantle and strip all standard cables in modern house wiring with a few hand movements and without changing tools.

The functional versatility of the universal dismantling and wire stripping tool lies in its design. The two-shell pistol handle design has made it possible to integrate several functions – and the ErgoStrip also sits extremely well in the hand. The ends of the tool are tapered at the front, thereby permitting space-saving dismantling work in flush mounted sockets. Markings inside the tool permit accurately repeated stripping of single conductors and dismantling of coax cables. A simple twist movement when dismantling and stripping, or a straightforward slit in the case of long dismantling distances, and the desired result is achieved.

Preparation

The preparatory work before wiring on a terminal box, distribution box, power or network sockets, can be carried out accurately and in a time-saving manner using the KNIPEX ErgoStrip: slits on the cable to dismantle longer sections, dismantling deep in surface and flush mounted sockets to leave the minimum sheathing required; stripping single conductors and – very important in today’s house wiring – the dismantling and stripping of coaxial cables for satellite and cable networks as well as data cables for home networks (LAN).

Handheld, multipurpose cable stripping tools are proving popular with electrical contractors, explains KNIPEX UK Marketing Manager David Barnes.

The new KNIPEX NexStrip (12 72 190), meanwhile, is a must-have multitool for all electricians. This versatile tool cuts, strips and crimps - three crucial applications all at the same time. It isolates flexible and solid conductors from 0.03 to 10mm² with automatic adaptation to the cable crosssections; it self-adjusts wire end sleeves between 0.25 to 4mm² /2 x 2.5mm²; and cuts flexible conductors up to 10mm². The KNIPEX NexStrip is perfect for domestic installations and helps save valuable time.

“ Cable strippers are an important part of an electrical contractor’s tool kit and electrical wholesalers have a great opportunity to catch the eye of their customers.”

Point of sale

Point of sale is of course important for wholesalers and in this case, the ErgoStrip point of sale material has been designed to be small enough to sit on the trade counter but big enough to make an instant impact on customers, encouraging spontaneous purchases at the till area. The display is made from high-quality cardboard, with a high gloss print and beautifully highlights

the key features of selected products.

QUALITY CONTROL

As we enter 2023, many of us will struggle to remember a time when we tracked our spending as closely. Price hikes are diminishing profits and each and every purchase is being made with extreme caution and forward planning. The cost-of-living crisis has altered the way we think about expenditure in both our personal and professional lives.

Decision time

While cost cutting may have become a necessity, the old adage ‘buy cheap, buy twice’, has never been truer. Tool choice always requires careful consideration. For any electrical contractor, an inadequate tool can lead to downtime, a slow work rate, and ultimately an un-forecasted replacement purchase, all impacting bottom lines. A tool that delivers a poor finish can lead to reputational damage and kill repeat business. At their worst, poor tools can be unsafe.

While electricians have hard decisions to make, so too do wholesalers. Towing the line between understanding the challenges impacting customers and giving sound advice may prove a difficult balance. A bad recommendation from the service desk will result in a lack of trust in the stockist.

Perhaps now more than ever is the time to invest in premium tools. In challenging

Brinley Buckley-Roberts, Brand Manager at Carl Kammerling International, the home of C.K Tools, discusses why premium hand tools are worth more than ever during a cost-of-living crisis.

times, it makes sense to be fully equipped to deliver speedy, top-quality results, safely, and without the threat of unexpected expenditure. Investing in premium hand tools can really make a difference in both the short and long-term for contractors and stockists alike.

Considerations

So, what should you look for when purchasing tools?

There are several elements to consider, and a few key areas that separate premium tools from the rest: the R&D process; the source of the materials; the engineering and manufacturing procedures; the quality control and accreditation. Each element undergoes a constant review as new materials, manufacturing techniques, or industry requirements are uncovered, with the effectiveness, durability and safety of the products always top of mind.

Research and development can mean many things but for C.K Tools this means listening intently to what the industry is asking for. C.K utilise a panel of professionals to not only find solutions to problems, but to also find the existing product evolutions that will make the job that much more efficient. From there, the NPD team goes into design and considers the aesthetics, the ergonomics, and of course the materials. There’s no product without a clear rationale; each one is meticulously planned, refined, prototyped and tested.

Precision engineering Material choice is of great importance to C.K Tools and has contributed considerably to a reputation built over more than 200 years. In the most part C.K procure steel from and manufacture products in Germany, in particular the North Rhine, which is world-renowned for its steel production. The region’s steel has varying levels and mixes of chromium, which has excellent corrosion resistance, vanadium, which works as a deoxidiser and reduces wear, and molybdenum, which when combined with chromium gives greater strength and impact resistance.

Not content with its premium grade steel, the North Rhine is also known as the industrial heartland for tool manufacturing.

TOOLS
26 JANUARY/FEBRUARY2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

The steel mills, chemical and water treatment businesses, and manufacturing plants all reside there and have developed great ways of collaborating over the years to ensure that the potential of the raw material is not lost through the processing and engineering stages.

C.K Tools has been working with its current manufacturing partners since 1904 and there’s a reason for it; in today’s market it is very rare that products are manufactured to the very peak of excellence but with German engineering practices that’s a given. Precision engineering requires a number of inputs and with hand tool manufacturing that starts with the quality of the die – the item used to stamp the shape of the tool in the steel. Utilising a mixture of CAD and CNC, dies can be cut to within a tolerance the equivalent of a human hair, delivering a near perfect product with every stamp.

Other engineering techniques are then used to ensure CK products offer

outstanding longevity. Induction hardening is a process used to ensure that parts of products – such as the jaws on pliers – are hardened to withstand heavy usage and ensure long-term performance. It involves electromagnetically heating up the steel and then rapidly cooling it to maintain the desired properties.

The precision engineering techniques don’t stop at the steel; hand tools must be inherently comfortable and safe to handle. To ensure this, every single screwdriver handle is injection moulded directly to the steel, giving the ultimate torsion-proof bond for increased reliability, durability, control and comfort. These touches all contribute to an easier and faster working experience: profitable efficiency.

Investment

A premium product isn’t just premium because a brand says it is; when other bodies endorse a product you know it sits above the rest. Across certain lines, C.K

Tools’ products are VDE certified, which is the highest form of independent safety testing in the electrical trade, while the majority achieve GS (Gepruefte Sicherheit) and DIN (Deutsche Institut) accreditation, which are German standards that indicate performance and quality.

Paying a premium price for a tool may seem counter-intuitive during a cost-ofliving crisis, but it’s important to understand what you’re paying for and how it will impact the work you produce. C.K Tools understands its customers; understands the requirements of each and every job; and is unwavering in its pursuit of precision engineering the perfect product to sell and to use. Yes, German engineered products come with a premium, but rest assured, they’ll be the best investments you’ll make.

PLAYINGWITH FIRE

In the same way that diligence needs to be adhered to when procuring electrical products to ensure their compliance with the latest regulations, it is also essential that projects which require fire protection are also designed, installed and commissioned to the correct standard BS5839.

Substandard

ESP is all too aware of the issue with counterfeit products and products that are uncertified (and potentially unsafe) making their way onto the marketplace. Now, having reviewed completed fire system designs from various sources, it has come to ESP’s attention that not all designs are equal. ESP would like to offer wholesalers and installers some advice on the types of issues to be aware of, after finding substandard work as a result of potentially inexperienced and/or under qualified designers.

ESP has seen:

● Fire system design drawings marked up without sufficient AFD (Automatic Fire Detection) Coverage

● Incorrect products specified

● Fire designs ‘completed’ and quoted within 30 minutes

● Supporting technical documentation

and proposals missing

The last two points are ones that are easily identifiable for the wholesaler and installer. Fire designs ‘completed’ in minutes are unlikely to have had the enquiry documentation evaluated correctly. Fire designs should always come with additional technical documentation such as a ‘Fire System Proposal’. This will tell any ‘responsible person’ or installer how their fire alarm system should work and ultimately how it should be installed.

If this is not provided as part of a design, how sure can we be that the design has been executed successfully?

Those who install to a poorly designed system and sign it off, are also liable for any damages or death that may arise from any subsequent fires.

Expert guidance

Already providing wholesalers and contractors with free fire training programmes, ESP took the decision to further enhance its commitment to helping the sector with a dedicated design service

which allows contractors access to a free of charge fire systems design facility.

The service is available to any size of business, from local electricians to national contracting companies. The aim is to provide expertise in choosing the right products and solutions to create a scheme that meets all the requirements and objectives of the project in question, and to ensure that it is compliant with all the relevant regulations and standards.

From an initial enquiry to discuss the requirements, the next stage will be one of information and measurements gathering. For larger and more complex design schemes, a visit to site will be carried out for a detailed survey. With all the relevant information gathered, including drawings and specifications, a suitable design proposal for an appropriate fire system will be created and supplied to the client along with a quotation.

Two-way interaction between customer

and the ESP design team throughout the process will be of paramount importance to ensure the design scheme meets all the necessary requirements.

Key points

ESP is welcoming enquiries from contractors, as well as wholesalers who supply to the professional electrical contractor market, and a dedicated email address has been set up for enquiries: design@espuk.com.

ESP has produced a handy, pocket-size guide to highlight the key points of the latest version of BS5389 Part 1: 2017. This standard deals with the code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises. ESP’s guide is aimed at those designers and installers who need simple guidance to help with the selection, spacing and location of fire devices.

The 24-page colour booklet is highly visual and very straightforward to follow. It covers the different categories of fire alarm and fire detection systems, plus the coverage and positioning for smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual call points, visual indication devices (VIDs) such as strobes, and visual alarm devices (VADs).

Details of ESP’s three fire alarm systems are also briefly explained – 2-Wire, Addressable and Conventional fire alarm systems – including the requisite cabling for each. A reminder of ESP’s free design and fire systems commissioning services is also featured.

THE GUIDE CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE ESP WEBSITE - WWW.ESPUK.COM . IT CAN ALSO BE ACCESSED VIA THE SCOLMORE GROUP APP, UNDER THE ESP CATALOGUES SECTION.

FINISHING TOUCHES

With a myriad of styles and finishes available for wiring accessories, Katie Plumstead, Scolmore’s Group Marketing Manager, looks at which styles and finishes proved most popular during 2022.

There has never been a wider choice of styles and finishes in wiring accessories available, giving designers and end users the opportunity to reflect the latest trends for interior design in the switches and sockets that they choose. Once considered purely functional items, wiring accessories have become an essential design feature contributing to the overall style and finish of a room.

Scolmore supplies one of the most comprehensive wiring accessories collections currently available on the market. There is something to suit all levels of budget, style requirements and finishes – from the Essentials basic range through to the Deco Plus premium, decorative metal collection.

Following a recent poll of some of its customers in a number of regions around the country, Scolmore shares the feedback on what is proving most popular. For decorative finishes satin chrome continues to be the number one choice for many installers/end users. Demand for matt black

and grey finishes continue to gather momentum and a number of projects planned for 2023 are specifically calling for matt black accessories. Scolmore first introduced matt black as a finish to its Definity screwless wiring accessories range in 2008. Last year the matt black finish option was extended to include a metal matt black version. The launch was in response to feedback from installers working on domestic and specification projects who were looking for an alternative premium finish for interiors. The matt black metal finish sits alongside the white metal plates that are part of the range.

It would appear that the trend for rose gold demand that was there a few years ago has all but disappeared, however in

some areas it seems there is a desire to go back in time with Brass and Antique Brass continuing to remain extremely popular. Square edge white accessories such as Scolmore’s Click Polar premium bright white range are still popular in the local authority sector where the replacement of existing products remains a major requirement.

From the USB charging point of view Scolmore has found that there is still a lack of understanding when it comes to USB charging products, with a lot of demand still for the USB C product. However, once the benefits of a USB A and USB C combined socket are explained as a future-proofing option, this is helping to drive demand.

The uptake on smart home accessories has been slow to take off as many homeowners still see it as a high end product. However, Scolmore is finding that with its Click Smart+ range they are getting more traction as the end user and contractor get more of an understanding of how the whole “smart home” system works within everyday life.

A la Mode

The backdrop to all of this for Scolmore, however, is that its Click Mode range of white wiring accessories remains the company’s best-selling wiring accessories collection to date. The Mode range was conceived and developed as a high quality, flexible and modern solution for virtually any domestic wiring requirement. The smooth, contemporary lines of the accessory plate fits easily into traditional and contemporary designs alike and the modular design allows installers unprecedented flexibility in creating dedicated wiring solutions to deal with specific wiring needs.

When selecting wiring accessories installers have often had to compromise their schemes as they have been unable to identify a suitably modular solution to satisfy their ideas. Mode accessories have been providing that flexibility, with a comprehensive selection of products

ranging from the humble light switch and socket outlet through to more specialised products dealing with the very latest developments in telephone and satellite products.

Investment and innovation

Scolmore has continued to invest in this range since it was originally launched, introducing products in visually contrasting versions to meet with Part M regulations, adding the award-winning Mode locating plug socket soon after. This was followed by USB sockets available in one and twogang, and single and twin USB options, with integrated Type A and Type C charging ports on the same socket, added most recently. The latest development to the Mode range saw the launch of lounge combination plates giving the installer the flexibility to configure any combination of audio, video, data and media connection on one plate as required.

Products from the Mode range have been specified and installed across a huge range of applications including schools, hospitals, care homes, hotels, offices and leisure complexes.

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE

The Mount Oswald student accommodation site at Durham University serves John Snow College and the brand-new South College. The purpose-built facility provides rooms for 1000 students and offers accommodation, common rooms, welfare facilities and café bars. There is a new University Hub with a 300-seat events hall and music practice rooms. The Colleges share a gym, a launderette, a faith and quiet room, a dance studio, performance practice space and a multi-use games area.

Work began on the project site in 2018. The project’s value at the time was circa £75M and it is let under a 50 year PPP. The Joint Venture Partnership of Campus Living Villages, Equitix and Interserve submitted the winning bid.

Evaluating the capital cost, running cost and service cost of any proposed solution was fundamental to the viability of the bid. BSAP Ltd. was appointed to produce a design concept for building services within the scheme.

Martyn Harrison of BSAP explains, “Our philosophy is fabric first – making the building thermally efficient. Our DNA is trying to get away with as few building services as we can. Being instrumental in the early stages of the design process is so important in ensuring that building services are not an add on, but fundamental to the architect’s scheme. As a small consultancy with accomplished partners, we are very hands-on, we provide the voice of experience whenever we embark on a project”

He continues, “The biggest challenge we face is incorporating best practice solutions while making the project affordable. Recognising that there is an affordability issue in everything we do is key in arriving at the right design. BSAP is unusual in that we have a lot of cost planning experience aligned with design.

PEW goes behind the scenes at a new student accommodation site at Durham University
36 JANUARY/FEBRUARY2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER CASE STUDY

Having designers sitting in this costing environment allows us to bounce our ideas around and ask the questions at the start; is this affordable or would another idea be better in this set of circumstances? How does new legislation affect the project? Are we exposing a client to undue pressure? Will this design make a client vulnerable? Will the re-sell of the building be compromised?”.

Electric heating

Where appropriate, BSAP will advocate an all-electric system and this was the case with Mount Oswald - he explains, “Some initial concepts had been put forward before the contract was awarded. One of them involved a district heating network because Durham [University] has experience of this around its estate and there was quite a strong desire to go down that route. However, we didn’t feel that was the right solution because a lot of energy is used to heat and pump medium temperature or LTHW (Low Temperature Hot water) through huge distribution networks. It is a costly exercise, with pumps and boilers working all the time. It is heating the whole system, not just the demand that is there. That is really energy inefficient. There is system loss too. The

whole point is that it isn’t cost effective, both in capital expense (CAPEX) and operational cost (OPEX) terms. The question has to be asked, ‘What is the point of this infrastructure if there isn’t a heating load within the building?’”

“Effectively there is this massive inertia in general distribution networks that is a significant cost - just for showering! That is where we pin-pointed the energy efficiency issue. In our opinion a better solution was electrical heating. If the building is thermally efficient, then the load is hot water - it isn’t predominantly the space heating! This negates the need for a massively expensive to install and maintain general distribution network.”

To control the electric heating BSAP researched what was available. During conversations with student accommodation providers, they noted that Prefect Irus was mentioned numerous

times. The simplicity and cost effectiveness of Irus was a big draw.

“We were sold on it primarily due to its compliance with reducing carbon use; energy efficiency in terms of only using heat when it is needed; and it is a very competitive CAPEX/OPEX. A lot of the big schemes are looking at a 50-year lifespanmeaning replacement of all the infrastructure of the building services at years 20-25.”

Recommendation

In fact, BSAP were so impressed with Irus that they have installed a small-scale system in their new offices in York. Martyn explains “You would expect a building services company to have air conditioning, but we chose not to, we have destratification fans, we have a lot of air movement, we open the windows for ventilation, and we have electric panel heaters as our solution, these are controlled by Irus. The central control is a real plus, monitoring and controllability is easy. We felt that if we are recommending a system, we ought to put our money where our mouth is!”

HYLEC

PCB HOUSING MODULES

Hylec-APL has launched a push-together range of PCB housing modules called DIME. The DIME range of modules is an open front system that provides DIN rail support for PCBs between 20mm and 177.5mm in length, with longer lengths possible by adding additional base mounting elements. The DIME system suits all DIN rails and is particularly useful for panel builders who need to fit PCBs inside metal cabinets.

DIME modules suit 72mm width PCBs and are easy to assemble thanks to their ingenious push-fit mechanism. There are several modules in the DIME range: BE base sections, which are available in three widths: 11.35mm, 22.5mm and 45mm; SEF end sections with feet (DIN clips), available in two widths: 11.25 and 22.5mm; SE end sections without feet, also available in two widths: 11.25 and 22.5mm; FS foot elements, to be clipped to SE and BE Sections. The SEF end sections with feet cut assembly time and reduce the number of stock lines that need to be carried. These sections only suit a top hat style DIN rail, but the FS foot elements fit both G and top hat rails.

The number of parts required to mount a PCB onto the DIN rail depends on the length of the PCB and there is a useful table on Hylec’s website detailing this. Hylec’s push fit extrusion offers a convenient solution in interlocking modules to create custom sizes, as opposed to buying long lengths of extrusion and cutting to length, saving the difficulties in shipping and additional cutting process in one product. The DIME modules are a robust, patented design manufactured from flame-retardant polyamide 6.6 UL94-V0 and are available now through all good electrical wholesalers and distributors.

ADVANCED EVACUATION ALERT SYSTEM

With amended Part B (Fire Safety) of the Building Regulations coming into effect from 1st December 2022, Advanced offers the ideal solution with its compliant evacuation alert system, EvacGo. Published on 1st June 2022, the updated Part B of the Building Regulations has now made it mandatory for all new build residential buildings over 18m to have an evacuation alert system. An evacuation alert system is vital to help fire and rescue services inform residents of a change in evacuation strategy during an incident.

Advanced’s EvacGo evacuation alert system offers peace of mind as it was designed alongside fire industry leaders specifically to meet the recommendations of BS 8629. EvacGo has been developed to support any evacuation strategy chosen by the fire and rescue service and operates completely independently of fire detection systems. The panel combines EN54-2 and 4 approved MxPro 5 technology with clear, easy-to-use manual controls to ensure firefighters can quickly and effectively identify and operate alert sounders to support the safe evacuation of tall residential buildings. EvacGo provides a simple, at-a-glance overview of a building’s evacuation alert zones, along with LED indication and manual toggle-switch controls for operating evacuation alert devices in each zone. The panels are available in 8, 16, 24 or 32 ‘fire fighter evacuation alert area’ variants and are expandable from one to four loops – or even further, when using Advanced’s highly robust, fault-tolerant network.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE WIRING ACCESSORIES

With matt black finishes on electrical accessories becoming increasingly popular in domestic and commercial installations, Knightsbridge is offering designers and contractors a wider range of darker shades with Anthracite and Smoked Bronze. Anthracite as a finish is increasingly popular generally and is rapidly becoming a renovation icon featuring throughout the home. Its contemporary versatility lends itself to anything from window systems through to radiators and now switches and sockets. A deep, dark grey that brings an industrial, minimalist chic to interior schemes, Knightsbridge’s Anthracite offers an edgy twist to the company’s Matt Black range. With a warm base tone, earthy feel and submetallic lustre, it is a striking finish that can either blend seamlessly with its surroundings or stand out against contrasting interiors. Smoked Bronze appeals to those seeking classic, subtle dark accessories while adopting a more individual stance. A patinated light grey with a warm bronze undertone, it has a discreet brushed finish that avoids the severity of the darker shades.

All Knightsbridge’s wiring devices and accessories are now available in these aesthetic finishes, from sockets, switches, media and communication outlets, combination and multimedia plates; and modular and gridplates, all including screwless options.

MARTINDALE ELECTRIC

TESTERS

When it comes to verifying the phase sequence, or rotation, of three phase circuits, Martindale Electric offers a professional range of testers. Getting the phase sequence wrong can have devastating consequences for plant and machinery with serious implications for machine safety. From motors running backwards through to cooling or lubricating systems underperforming, one wrong connection can lead to a major maintenance headache.

Providing enhanced user safety, Martindale Electric’s PSI4000 and PSI4300 non-contact phase sequence indicators can quickly and accurately identify three phase sequences for motor installations and other systems. Designed for use on both insulated and non-insulated conductors, the PSI4000 and PSI4300 carry out measurements via inductive crocodile clips, which can be simply clipped on to speed up testing and reduce the risk of coming into contact with live parts.

LEDs provide a clear indication of phase rotation and have a high intensity setting for when working in strong ambient light. Both models also offer a buzzer indicator. Similar in function, the only difference between the twophase sequence indicators is that the PSI4000 provides a correct indication for clockwise sequence, as used in the building facilities industry, while the PSI4300 provides a correct indication for anticlockwise sequence as used, for example, in power utilities.

Another solution is the PC15250 phase rotation indicator, which has been specifically designed to quickly and simply prove the presence of all three live phases (or identify which are faulty) and show the sequence of phase rotation when all three phases are confirmed as present.

LEDVANCE PRODUCTION & STORAGE LIGHTING

LEDVANCE is showcasing a range of lighting solutions to satisfy the unique requirements of production and storage facilities. The requirements for a lighting system in a storage environment are diverse and a flexible system that can be easily adapted to changes in working processes is essential. The TruSys FLEX DALI system is an ideal lighting control for an entire building that can manage over 1,000 individually addressed luminaires across rooms and floors, operated by simply using a pushbutton or app for smartphones/tablets.

A typical high-bay warehouse is characterised by high ceilings, narrow aisles and hardly any natural daylight. In addition, the large difference in brightness between indoor and outdoor areas produces a high risk of accidents in entrances and exits. Even from an exceptional ceiling height of nine metres, the LEDVANCE High Bay DALI LED luminaires provide uniformly good illumination, and the daylight control of the DALI-2 drivers enables additional potential for energy savings.

In a production environment, the demands for a lighting system are varied: from rough manual work to fine assembly activities and visual inspections. The LEDVANCE DAMP PROOF Gen 2 DALI meets all these requirements with its high protection against shock, dust and water.

Loading areas are often particularly busy at night. With large trucks manoeuvring and goods being loaded and unloaded, the area quickly becomes crowded and difficult to keep track of. This makes lighting that provides orientation and safety all the more important. The LEDVANCE FLOODLIGHT performance is ideal for loading zones, as well as for facade illumination and lighting close to buildings.

For facilities looking to retrofit LED lamps into an existing lighting solution, the LEDVANCE LED Tube range is an ideal first step. A stand-out product for production and storage environments is the LED Tube T8EM PRO, which has a fullglass portfolio to protect against bending and a shatterproof protection sheet.

SIGNIFY LED LIGHTING

Signify has launched its Ultra Efficient product lineup featuring its most energyefficient LED lighting solutions to date. The products

launched include a range of A-class MASTER LEDbulbs and MASTER LEDtubes. The Ultra Efficient product line up is top of the class in relation to the stricter energy labelling under the Ecodesign Regulation, and the Energy Labelling Regulation, which have recently come into play.

Thanks to this technological breakthrough, the new products are the first in a range of new Philips lighting, meeting the highest level in the new energy labelling legislation. Also, with energy savings of up to 60% compared with standard LED lamps and up to 3.5x longer lifetime, the Ultra Efficiency range is the perfect choice to help customers tackle the mounting pressure to lower carbon footprint in the global energy crisis.

With the previous energy labelling, just 120lm/W would achieve A++ efficiency. Under the new ratings, 120/lm would achieve an E-rating. For an A-class rating under the new regulations, lighting products must reach an energy efficiency of 210lm/W. Signify has developed and designed a range of lamps that meet these criteria, meaning they consume 60% less power to achieve the same light output as standard LED lighting. The Ultra-Efficient range are more cost-effective in the long run, thanks to their lower energy consumption and longer lifetime.

The Qvis full colour, interactive CCTV display concept has been designed to showcase the latest in CCTV technology. At the start point the equipment has been packaged up in kit format, enabling electrical wholesalers and their contractors to gain confidence and familiarity around a technology that will ultimately drive new incremental sales in both kit and project format.

The interactive display consists of full colour camera technology that delivers 24 7 full colour images rather than the traditional monochrome (black & white) at night which is preferred for evidential purpose, as well as an artificial intelligence (AI) network video recorder (NVR). It provides a wealth of easy to use smart features, such as the ability to differentiate, to a very high accuracy, between humans and wildlife, minimising false alarms on intruder activated alarms.

Colour coded

The entire range of products are colour coded with Qvis’s core colours of red and blue. The intention behind this is to simplify the product navigation process and allow customers to simply identify and differentiate between HD Analogue and IP technologies. The colour coding has resulted in a better understanding of the available technologies and an increase in repeat business.

In addition to the displays, Qvis encourages electrical wholesalers and their contractors to undertake training. The training is fully certified and is provided free of charge with the training undertaken across the country. Other services provided include design and commissioning where required. Qvis’s inhouse team of people are vastly experienced in this space and when engaging with the channel it became apparent that there was business out there that was either being subcontracted or discarded, mainly down to confidence

around the technology. By providing these additional services, the company has seen project business grow significantly for the contractor and electrical wholesaler.

Creating awareness

Matthew Graham, Sales Director for Qvis Lighting and Security, said: “What’s incredibly encouraging is where customers have committed to displays in nearly all cases they have created awareness that it’s a solution they can offer and sales have grown typically in what is a brand new category for most. We will continue to evolve the displays and the education we are providing around the technology with the goal of CCTV being a significant and contributing category to the channel.” FOR FURTHER

2022 was a landmark year for

IDEAL Industries. We celebrated our 30th anniversary in the UK and, in the US, I endeavoured to continue the great work carried out by the IDEAL Industries Foundation, by determining how we can help the people and groups which have unswervingly supported us throughout the years. The first 11 months of the year culminated in us donating a staggering $385,000 across a range of good causes in a bid to affect positive changes for minority groups within our industry. These activities cemented our long established reputation as a progressive, sustainable organisation that operates to the highest ethical standards.

Introducing the IDEAL Industries Foundation

The organisation was established in 1985 by former CEO and Board Chair Dave Juday with the aim of giving back to the community and building on our Founder J. Walter Becker's belief in the importance of strong relationships in business. As a result of this ethos, the foundation has distributed corporate philanthropy and will continue its great work thanks to a legacy bequest made by two Juday family members in 2014.

At the foundation, we pride ourselves on funding innovative initiatives that train and support women and people of colour to enter and stay in the typically male dominated electrical trade.

According to career expert website Zippia, of the 465,873 electricians currently employed in the United States, just 4.4% of all electricians are women, while 95.6% are men.

By encouraging these traditionally underrepresented groups to participate in and diversify the electrical industry, the foundation helps address current and future workforce shortages, while strengthening the long term inclusivity of our sector and all that it has to offer.

This is because careers in the trades offer workers without a college degree one of the best opportunities to build wealth and often own their own businesses. At the IDEAL Industries Foundation, we want everyone to benefit from the vast range of well paid and rewarding career opportunities that are available in this industry.

48 JANUARY/FEBRUARY2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
Nicole Juday, Executive Director and Board Chair for the IDEAL Industries Foundation, explains why it’s vital to give back to
the people and communities which support your business.

We believe that by creating a caring culture we can make a significant difference to the equity and prosperity of our communities. To that end, we’re proud to support seven long standing non-profit organisations that provide services such as pathways out of homelessness, advocacy for children, affordable daycare, food security and various social and mental health services. They include:

● Dekalb County Youth Service Bureau

● Safe Passage

● Family Service Agency

● Kishwaukee Family YMCA

● Hope Haven of Dekalb County

● Dekalb co. Community Gardens

● Adventure works

● CASA

When adequately resourced, these organisations can create a strong community safety net, able to help people get back on their feet when faced with adverse circumstances and hopefully arrive at a place of greater stability and security.

How we supported the Cassandra Banks Foundation

One of our most recent projects saw us award a $50,000 challenge grant to the Cassandra Banks Foundation (CBF), a California based non-profit organisation committed to helping black women excel in non-traditional professions, with an emphasis on the electrical trade. The grant funds will support the CBF's efforts to raise awareness of the opportunities in the electrical trades, recruit black women into apprenticeship programmes and provide mentorship throughout their journey.

We now look forward to supporting the efforts of the CBF and other organisations which can help break

down the various policy, economic and social barriers that contribute to the lack of diversity in the trades. The goal of the challenge grant is to increase funding for future programmes and leverage additional donor support from private sectors, which is a proven strategy for long term financial success.

Further causes we have championed

In 2022, the foundation supported Chicago Women in the Trades, a pre-apprentice programme for women going into the construction industry, as well as ANEW, a programme that provides diversity and inclusion training for the construction industry.

The foundation has also recently created a tool donation programme that focuses on supplying tools to pre-apprenticeship electrical training centres that serve diverse audiences. A

recent donation was made to the Lake St. Works pre-apprenticeship programme, which was opened in South Minneapolis in the wake of the George Floyd killing to provide pathways into the construction industry for underrepresented groups.

The foundation’s overall mission is underpinned by IDEAL Industries’ core values, which encompass believing in people, showing a commitment to excellence, building strong relationships, being transparent in business and creating long term value and sustainability.

To conclude

The skilled trades have been a pathway to economic opportunity since IDEAL Industries was started over 100 years ago in 1916. Today, we want to ensure that these highly skilled and well paying jobs are accessible to everyone. The IDEAL Industries Foundation believes that investing back into our communities - whether geographic areas where we do business or the tradespeople who use our products - is the best way to demonstrate that we care about the people who have contributed to our success as a company.
