ON THE RIGHT ROAD

For construction, the post pandemic landscape is proving to be rather like that old saying about the Scottish weather – if you don’t like it just wait twenty minutes. Whilst change and uncertainty seems to be the order of the day there are some immutable facts, and the importance of upgrading and renewing our road network is certainly one of them.

This month’s Construction Plant News features some of the latest solutions in the highways industry, a sector where cost effectiveness and time constraints exist like few others. As a result, it is equally a field where some of the most innovative solutions are being explored and these will be needed to be deployed like never before in the years ahead.

Our transport infrastructure is vital not just to the contractors and plant hirers that build and maintain them but also to our economic well-being. That’s a reality reflected in the government’s road investment strategy (RIS2) where £27billion has been pledged in the period from 2020-2025.

As has consistently been the case with HS2, rumours abound that this is commitment that is set to be scaled back, a claim that it should be said the government denies. There are, of course, some headline grabbing projects that have been shunted onto the hard shoulder – which is changing RIS2 as it was originally proposed – not least the Smart Motorway programme, and the A303 tunnel alongside Stonehenge. It is here that the role of the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) in monitoring the financial and practical viability of individual projects is fundamental to delivering the infrastructure we all need in a timely and cost-effective manner.

It is, however, not just about the big ticket items because any motorist who is accustomed to threading through the potholes minefield on their daily commute will know that local authorities need higher levels of funding to improve safety and the road user experience. Similarly, as the proliferation of electric vehicles charges on, there is a demand for infrastructure that will keep them on the move.

Many of the machines and materials needed to improve safety and productivity all exist – but what is required is an environment in which contractors can introduce them with confidence. That’s why funding schedules, such as the RIS, are of such importance – not only their existence on paper but a belief that the proposed schemes will actually translate into a sustained pipeline of activity on the ground. Uncertainty is the enemy of business and RIS3 will need to reassure the sector that funding will continue beyond 2025.

In common with every other facet of our society Covid had a profound effect on patterns of road usage. Indeed, lockdowns cut the number of journeys overnight and, thanks to the rise of working from home, they remain below pre-pandemic levels. Despite what the climate activists might tell you, however, it is still the case that the

estimated 247,500 miles of roads that crisscross our country are the best way of moving freight, and people. That’s a fact that’s unlikely to change for the foreseeable, especially with the billions being allocated to alternative drivetrain development in cars, vans and HGVs, all of which will help us comply with our carbon and emissionsreducing commitments. What is required is a confidence in infrastructure investment that will ensure we stay on the right road.

ENGINES OF CHANGE

A team of 100 engineers have been working on the project for more than a year and now JCB’s £100 million investment in super-efficient hydrogen engines has reached a significant milestone.

The 50th hydrogen combustion engine has now come off the production line as par t of the development process It is an achievement that has “secured JCB’s place in histor y as the first construction equipment company to develop a fully working combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen,” declares Lord Bamford

JCB’s commitment to reducing emissions goes back almost 25 years and the latest diesel engines designed to comply with European Stage V regulations have already delivered a 97% reduction in NOx emissions since 1999 and a 98% reduction in particulates In addition, thanks to a drive to reduce fuel consumption, the manufacturer’s machines use 50% less fuel on average than those produced more than a decade ago – delivering significant carbon dioxide reductions and saving customers money on fuel.

The company has also been at the forefront of electric technolog y development. While

batter y electric is suitable for smaller machines which do less hours and typically use less fuel, larger machines have a higher energ y requirement This would result in larger batteries, which take longer to charge , making them less suitable for machines which work multiple daily shifts and do not have the available downtime to recharge

As a result, the Staffordshire firm has concentrated its development of electric machines on its compact range including the 525-60E Loadall telehandler and the 19C-1E mini excavator

At the same time the search for future fuels has left no stone unturned and has included HVO, biogas, E-fuels, ammonia and hydrogen

Lord Bamford said: “The majority of these alternative fuels require the production of hydrogen to make , so it makes perfect sense to use hydrogen in the first place because it is a clean zero carbon fuel which can be produced from renewable energ y. Hydrogen also offers a potential solution to the challenge of batteries on larger machines; it allows for fast refuelling and is a mobile fuel solution, allowing fuel to be taken to the machine . ”

As par t of its hydrogen development, fuel cells have also been investigated, and in July 2020 the industr y ’ s first ever hydrogen powered excavator was unveiled – a 20-tonne 220X

For the time being, JCB has come to the conclusion that fuel cells are too expensive , too complicated and not robust enough for construction and agricultural equipment

Lord Bamford said: “The unique combustion proper ties of hydrogen enable the hydrogen engine to deliver the same power, the same torque , and the same efficiency, but in a zero-carbon way Hydrogen combustion engines also offer other significant benefits By leveraging diesel engine technolog y and components, they do not require rare ear th elements and critically, combustion technolog y is already well proven on construction and agricultural equipment It is a technolog y which is cost effective , robust, reliable and well known throughout not just the construction and agricultural industr y, but the whole world ”

JCB hydrogen engines are already powering prototype backhoe loaders and Loadall telescopic handlers and the company has recently unveiled its ver y own designed and built mobile refuelling bowser to take the fuel to the machines. The bowser has enough hydrogen to fill 16 hydrogen backhoe loaders and is able to be transpor ted either on the back of a modified Fastrac tractor or on a trailer.

at tipping into a trailer or loading and unloading bags of sand from a vehicle , for example . Add to that a 2.6m forward reach and you have an impressive load char t and working range .

To be genuinely transpor t-friendly size matters and the ULM is a highly manoeuvrable 1 49m in width and 1 92m in height, which also makes narrow spaces accessible on site Add to that a 3 ½m length and a 12x6 trailer is more than accessible and, indeed, is the recommended size Ground clearance when moving on and off a beaver tail or swan ’ s neck trailer is equally impor tant, and on these machines it is generous Limited slip differentials on the front and rear axle will also increase traction and safety when loading via the likes of wooden ramps

The boom shares many of the designs of the well-established MT 625 telehandler All Manitou hoses that go to the front end of the boom are internal, for example , increasing protection and reducing downtime , with bucket cylinders equally protected underneath, and there’s the option of specifying two auxiliar y ser vices to the boom head

In terms of dashboard and controls, Manitou has harmonised many of the in-cab features across its por tfolio and that’s reflected in the driver space in the ULM, which includes the manufacturer’s JSM joystick The result is a clear and easy-to-use system, that rental customers can easily familiarise themselves with. Feedback to the operator via pop up notifications communicates the status of the machine and application clearly, and there’s a number of creature comfor ts.

A unique feature on the ULM is a

polycarbonate roof window that increases load visibility at height, whilst maintaining the integrity of a FOPS/ROPS cab Operators will welcome the all-round vision from the driver’s seat, which is facilitated by the engine positioned on the right-hand side and the boom straight down the middle , offering good overall balance on either side and excellent lines of sight

Power is derived from a 35hp Yanmar engine , with DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) and DPF (diesel par ticulate filter) aftertreatment Many contractors are focusing on idling as an easy win in fuel consumption –as well as reducing emissions – and the technolog y is now available to help. A stop/star t system reduces idling by switching off the engine when the machine is not in use , for instance , saving diesel and the hours accrued on the telehandler.

Hydraulic flow is 48ltr/min, which is

higher than many machines on the market, and all that oil is pushed through a valve chest that benefits from flow sharing, which means combined movements, and multifunctioning is possible The pump size can be increased as an option to 62ltr/min which provides more oil flow to the end of the boom

The ULM design is weight-conscious at ever y turn and that includes a hydraulic oil tank with just a 39ltr capacity The tank can be reduced to that size thanks to an antiaeration filter, which removes any bubbles, and allows the oil to be moved around the system more quickly A new feature for telehandlers is the ULM’s electronic compensation system. It’s a technolog y that is already in use in Manitou’s access platforms, and again reduces the number of components – as well as the weight of the machine . Activated by an angle sensor on the back of the boom – and a length measurement sensor inside the bucket cylinder – the carriage angle is then adjusted to keep the bucket in the same position.

Manitou is no stranger to the compact telescopic handler, with the MLT 420 unit currently the smallest in its por tfolio, but the ULM provides an unrivalled level of versatility Ease of transpor tation is combined with performance and on-site manoeuvrability to produce a ver y versatile solution

ON A ROLLER

Replacing the previous DV+ models, the new HX series combine intuitive operation with Easy Drive , high performance data, many comfort features and sustainable operation, as well as the "Smart Compact" digital compaction assistant. Not only that but the manufacturer has included a number of improvements when compared to its predecessors with new options and interfaces available

The HX series is the new flagship for the Hamm fleet Designed for asphalt compaction, the HX 70i (7 t/55 4 kW) and HX 90i (9 t/74 4 kW) both deliver high surface outputs on large construction sites What's more , they also impress in tasks such as compaction in cur ves, where a high degree of precision is achieved It is here that the pivot steering, with a large turning angle , large track offset and four different steering modes, comes into its own

The foundation of the high compaction quality is intelligent drive control with automatic reversing. In combination with the electrically adjustable seat operating unit, it guarantees quality and comfor t braking and accelerating the rollers quickly, but smoothly. A unique feature in the market, when reversing the seat also turns automatically in the direction of travel, producing first-class

surfaces with ergonomic working and a high degree of safety.

It’s the new LED turn indicators and details around the cab that give the HX series its distinctive design. The fully glazed panoramic cab offers a vastly improved field of vision with an excellent view of the drum edges Lighting for drums and drum edges can be added as an

option, whilst a camera system with two robust monitors (IP 67) is integrated as standard, providing an optimal field of vision

Thanks to division of the screen, views to the front and to the rear are always visible regardless of seat position Also unique is the cab floor's glass window for viewing the drums – which can also be folded in for cleaning

The Easy Drive operating concept combines an ergonomically optimised operator's platform with the sophisticated operating structure , including language-neutral and self-explanator y

operation for the HX series. Despite the extensive machine functions, operation is intuitive and ver y quickly learned. Steering is performed with the steering wheel but all other impor tant functions are operated via a joystick and the multifunction armrest The position of armrests and tilt angle of the steering column are adjustable – not forgetting an ergonomic step, folding armrests on request and a comfor t exit as well as fur ther comfor t features, such as 12 volt and USB sockets, plus a number of storage compar tments

sprayed separately or as a mixture For spreading surface courses, Hamm has improved chip spreaders in the HX series: The HLS 150 line spreader (760 l) and HLS 170 line spreader (960 l), as well as the HDS disc spreader (750 l, spreading width 8 m) All models have the option for height adjustment Optionally, an innovative lowering device is available , making installation and removal possible without a forklift truck or crane . The spreaders are operated from the operator's platform and are fitted with automatically rolling tarpaulins and integrated LED lighting.

The Smar t Compact compaction assistant can be used with HX series rollers. The system decides compaction automatically and individually for each drum: Whether to compact with vibration and big or small amplitude , with oscillation, or statically The driver then only has to enter whether a base , binder or asphalt surface course is to be compacted

The assistant evaluates data about the condition of the asphalt, optionally incorporating local weather data from an integrated weather station This makes Hamm the first manufacturer in the world to automate the separate setting of both drums and is, therefore , raising process reliability and

Thanks to numerous interfaces, and the corresponding hardware , the rollers are prepared for future applications and challenges – be they concerned with quality, documentation or communication Hamm also offers the option of integrating systems for avoiding collisions with a PDS (proximity detection system). Moreover, the JDLink telematics platform is available across all models and can be used to interrogate performance data, fill levels, error messages, operating hours or ser vice inter vals – anytime , anywhere .

Nine models and split drums

The HX series rollers are available with 7 t (HX 70i) and 9 t (HX 90i) operating weight Among the nine total versions are models with two vibrating roller drums, an oscillation and a vibrating roller drum as well as combination rollers Here , the vibration and oscillation drums are made as a split or non-split drum depending on the model

Large-scale paving on major road projects demand a high quality finish delivered in a productive , efficient and cost-effective process

With the launch of the MB122 and VTD121 Electro Thermo Controlled fixed screeds for its large tracked pavers, Volvo CE is not only growing its range of screeds, but empowering its customers to achieve just that

Thanks to their ability to produce speedy, consistent and evenly spread heating from a single source of power, electrically heated screeds are an incredibly convenient solution Powered by a 55kVA on-board generator, there is no longer a need for customers to refill gas bottles to heat the screed, as would normally be required with gas heated screeds The result is a fast star t-up, maximum uptime and a more efficient work site .

These fixed screeds are now available on the Volvo P6820D ABG, P7820D ABG and P8820D ABG models and benefit from an expansive paving width of 2.5-13m. They have been designed to lay ever ything from hot asphalt through to dr y lean Roller-Compacted Concrete and Cement-Bound Materials, all the way to railway ballast and graded mineral mixes

The new electric heating function enables a star t-up in just 40 minutes When combined with one heated tamper bar and two heating elements per screed section for optimised heat distribution, precise thermo-controlled heating with an automatic temperature adjustment and individual temperature sensors per section, customers can be guaranteed a speedy and efficient screed heating process

Maximised pre-compaction

Maximised pre-compaction is paramount to achieving a greater density in the finished mat,

There’s less time and less effort with the electrically heated fixed screeds by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE)

resulting in a longer-lasting pavement and lower operating costs The new vibrator y and tamping fixed screeds provide just that, delivering the smoothest possible finish for any job Featuring variable vibration speed and tamper stroke , they can be specified with a

or retract as needed in order to adapt to irregular edges, while manual or hydraulic end gates are an optional feature to control flow of material on either side

Minimised downtime

single or double tamper bar solution.

Volvo fixed vibrator y screeds with double tampers are the best par tners for paving thick layers. Its double tamper technolog y delivers a 5-7% higher degree of compaction than with a single tamper and can achieve a 98% Marshall density, substantially reducing rolling work requirements and associated costs It also provides the best possible even surface due to the feeding effect of the first tamper

Great flexibility

With a crown adjustment of +4% to -2% and extension boxes to work across a variety of paving widths, the new screed solutions provide great flexibility for any job at hand Vario extensions, with an extension range of 0 75m on each side , allow the screed to extend

The new on-board diagnostic function helps to check the condition of the heating bars and detect if and where a replacement is needed, ensuring minimal downtime Uptime is also secured with easy screed assembly and straightforward maintenance The possibility for an easy lift of screed sections is supplied through two central lifting eyes per section, while an integrated hose and cable routing provides a clear path for assembly. In addition, hydraulic connecting points and easily accessed electric connections, as well as service points and tamper bars that are within easy reach, makes assembly and maintenance quick and easy.

A screed for all jobs

As with all Volvo screeds, these new electrically heated solutions benefit from decades of experience and close collaboration with customers to best suit their needs If versatility is required, the manufacturer offers Variomatic screeds which can be extended to double their basic width

Applications,

HANDLING THE PRESSURE

1. Finding the ‘sweet spot’ Compressors must provide the right amount of pressure – or force – needed to complete the required process Not too little , or too much Too little pressure means pneumatic tools won’t work, whereas too much pressure can damage the equipment, waste energ y, and raise operating costs

with PACE, or large compressor with Air

Exper t With our patented technologies, you can adjust pressure while the compressor automatically regulates flow Operating handheld tools, then tackling a shotcrete application an hour later? No problem

In the drilling industr y, there is heightened consumer demand for compressors that prioritise speed and efficiency This demand can be met using high pressure compressors, such as the DrillAir –especially designed to maximise efficiency by drilling faster than ever before , and helping to save valuable time and costs

For projects that need pressure above 35 bar, boosters are available Atlas Copco compressors come in oil-free or nitrogen variations, and can reach anywhere from 69 bar to a whopping 345 They have extensive pressure inlet / outlet, and flow capacity for a wide range of applications – even in the harshest and most demanding conditions

Ever y project is different, and not ever y application requires the same level of pressure Geothermal projects, for example, require deep boreholes to be drilled into the earth, which can only be achieved by using compressors with a pressure output of 35 bar Abrasive blasting projects, on the other hand, may only require 10 bar of pressure.

For sufficient pressure , you need consistent flow. A large air compressor, for example , takes the hammer downwards by applying a downward pressure , while the flow keeps it rotating. For optimal performance , the goal should be to supply an application with the proper air flow at the correct pressure , and treat the pair as inextricably linked.

Those requiring varied pressure levels for different aspects of a project can benefit from using a medium compressor fitted

Variable Speed Drive (VSD) compressors are a smart choice when demand for air varies, and allow for continuous flow rate regulation.VSD compressors can operate at ver y low deliver y pressures while still maintaining the air system’s required minimum working pressure, and also deliver more consistent discharge pressure for all the compressed air applications throughout your facility.

At Atlas Copco all new, updated, or repaired pressure containing systems are first put through a leak test, and then a strength test The latter puts the compressor at 110% of

the system's maximum operating capacity, where it is kept under pressure in order to monitor integrity and safety All components are also manufactured in line with the strict industr y standard of pressure regulation –the European Pressure Directive

A holistic approach is needed to maintain pressure quality, as different components can negatively affect performance Filters, dr yers, and the compressor ’ s piping and valves all need to be considered and maintained appropriately in order to keep pressure working in tip-top shape

Used compressors: a breath of fresh air

With new equipment supply tight, providing a steady source of quality reconditioned used compressors is a sound – and sustainable – alternative, says Dominic Fancini, of Atlas Copco Portable Air Division.

Ultimately, a systematic approach should be taken to select a compressor in line with the needs of the application. When the role of pressure in a process is clearly defined, finding the system that will be the most profitable and efficient becomes simple .

GGiving compressors a full extended second life is more than just good business for Atlas Copco The company is committed to the circular economy and today nearly ever y compressor has the ability to be renewed and sent back out into the world for a whole new adventure in the field. And second life needn’t mean second class: users can expect that their OEM revitalised, and modernised compressors perform just like new. That’s not the end of the good news – they are also typically less expensive to buy than new and can play an impor tant role in offsetting climate change

The choice doesn’t have to be a compromise either because more than 300 compressors flow through the company ’ s refurbishment centre in Poland Here , a team of engineers take the most promising used units, inspect them, evaluate the economies of

renewal, strip them, and bring them back to market leading reconditioned status 300 compressors a year is just the tip of an often-overlooked iceberg, believes Dominic Fancini, who is in charge of global used equipment at Atlas Copco’s compressor business

“Today, the new compressor market is booming,” says Dominic “But these same machines will –in three-or-fiveyears ’ time – find themselves coming onto the second-hand market. We need to get ready for that influx and have the resources in place to give the best of them an extended and second life .

“There’s ver y little compromise when you buy used from the people who made the equipment in the first place , ” he says “You get a machine that’s fully reconditioned, and with warranty ”

A WORKING

Ready to swap your old par tner in for a shiny new model? That’s the iconic Peugeot van we are referring to, of course – before you get any other ideas – because its recently launched second generation e version is already star ting to turn some eco heads Not that it is going to have it all its own way, of course Such is the convoluted make-up of the LCV market these days – with even rivalry amongst its own siblings (namely the Citroen e-Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo Electric) – we ’ re in for some interesting marketing and sales pitches in the run up to 2030 Nor is that taking into account the plethora of other competing similar sized electric vans which are about to come into the mainstream market

Remarkably, it’s been more than twelve years since we were properly introduced to the first viable electric van – the Kangoo ZE from Renault and, naively perhaps, we expected ranges to rise and prices to fall pretty dramatically over the coming decade . That clearly hasn’t happened in quite the way we – and many small business van users – had anticipated, but are we getting closer to the point where , to continue our theme , it really can be a marriage made in heaven?

With a projected range of 171 miles on its fully charged 50kWh batter y pack, Peugeot will hope that at least one of those potential

relationship brakers has been addressed, especially since their research shows that 80 per cent of van users cover less than 124 miles a day That certainly supports our long-held view that, for many in the construction industr y, who work locally for the majority of the time, a batter y-powered vehicle is a viable option

One of the big issues with going electric , of course , is what that means to payloads compared with conventional vehicles and how

expected ranges are duly impacted At a generous 800kg, and identical load area to its petrol and diesel Par tner models, the e version is clearly moving in the right direction, although the diesel alternatives can comfor tably add 200kg to that figure

One thing they can’t control, of course , is the weather and winter cold is clearly no friend of the batter y packs Our test coincided with a shor t but intense Arctic blast and, with

reliable performance , then the e Par tner is right up there in terms of current benchmarks for electric vans

To that end, it strikes us as somewhat strange that the company don’t make its environmental credentials much more easily identifiable to the casual obser ver, although they are not alone in this lack of up-front branding If you are doing your bit for the planet then you surely want your potential customer base to know all about it!

As you would expect, ever y e Par tner offers fast charging as standard with 0 to 80% achievable within 30 minutes, whilst a standard domestic wall box will yield a full charge in seven and half hours Three driving modes can be engaged depending on the conditions and an attractive looking instrument cluster gives a clear and precise view of the vehicle’s status at all times

the heater on full bast for even a relatively shor t period, the range was noticeably compromised Even parked up overnight a significant drop in temperature will knock a few miles off. And then, of course , there is the electric vehicle’s real nemesis – motorways. For the purposes of the test drive on a full charge we restricted it to just for ty miles up the M1 simply because of the anxiety associated with getting back to our star ting point.

The problem is largely due to that ingrained mindset of making constant comparisons with conventional powered vans If you can look beyond that and see e power for exactly what it is, namely, an eco-friendly, business statement that delivers urban dwelling, silent and highly

Quick off the mark, it will do 0 to 62mph in just under twelve seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 81mph Those who do opt for an electric power train will find the same choice as those vans available with conventional engines with different spec levels, shor t or long wheelbase and either a panel van or five seat crew cab. The well-honed interior is pretty much identical to the regular Par tner although extra safety features such as safety bags, autonomous braking and lane keeping assist come at a premium which on price from £32,385 suggests least, there is still plenty of co before it becomes a fully-fled
