Good afternoon everyone, Today, we offer a warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of our opposition Wincanton Town as well as our match officials too. We hope that they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too. Last weekend’s game against Middlezoy Rovers fell victim to the weather unsurprisingly with plenty of surface water on the main pitch. Thankfully the top pitch was dry enough to allow the under-18’s to get their County Cup match played although sadly the result went against them as they lost 1-3 to Staplegrove. Last weekend also saw an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Toolstation Western League at Wellington. All the League’s clubs were summoned to attend and vote on what course of action they wish to take regarding a possible reorganisation on geographical terms. The vote was two thirds in favour of the change, it will be interesting to see what happens now going forward. Please keep an eye on the club’s website at www.hengroveathletic.com where the latest updates to the fixtures list are. Several games have been moved due to the weather, our Cup commitments or to fill gaps so make sure you are aware of where we are playing each week. Best wishes and enjoy the game.

Wincanton Town Football Club was founded in 1890 and played most of its football in the Yeovil and District Football League at Dancing Lane on West Hill. In the early to mid 1990’s the West Hill ground was sold to fund Wincanton’s new Sports ground development on Moor Lane to the south west of the town. The club continues to play here still today. During the club's recent history, they progressed significantly in the late 1980's by winning the Yeovil and District League Division 2 in 1988/89, winning Division 1 the following season before completing a notable hat-trick in 1990/91 as they became the Yeovil and District Premier Division Champions. The club remained within the Yeovil league set up for the next few years and in 2002/03 with Mike Hatcher as the first team manager the side finished as runners up in the Premier Division. This then allowed the club to apply for promotion into the Somerset County League to which they were accepted. The club adapted well to the new ‘Senior’ level of football as they finished their first season as runners up in Division 3 thus securing back to back promotions. Town scored over 100 goals along the way. In 2006 and following two seasons of mid table finishes in Somerset Senior League Division 2, the club made the decision to move over the border to play in the Dorset County League. Wincanton were allocated a space in the Dorset Senior League for season 2006/07. The side managed by Wayne Jerome stormed to the league title winning a 20-game league season by a 10-point margin and as a result were promoted into the Dorset Premier League. The club finished in a creditable 5th position in its first season in the DPL, and then followed this up with three mid table finishes of 8th, 9th and 7th. Paul Down was appointed as first team manager in the summer of 2010, and in his second season (2011/12) the club finished in 4th position losing just 3 league matches all season. The following season (2012/13) saw the club do even better as Wincanton finished as runners up to Portland United. This allowed the club to apply for promotion to the Toolstation Western Football League. During the season Wincanton won 25 of their 34 league matches and scored over 100 goals in the process. Wincanton worked their way through to the final of the Somerset Senior Cup and a 1-0 win against Brislington Reserves in a match played at Street Football Club saw Town add a trophy to the cabinet in the final game of a memorable season. Things got even better as early in the summer of 2013 Wincanton received confirmation that they had been accepted into the Toolstation Western League for the following season. A busy summer then lay ahead as big changes at the club had to be made both on and off the pitch. team finished its first season in the Western League in a very creditable 4th spot scoring 116 league goals. The committee worked hard to ensure floodlights, hard standing and fencing was installed on time to achieve the league’s ground grading rules. Gary Johnson then manager of Yeovil Town Football Club officially switched on the club’s new floodlights in October 2013. His then Championship first team squad played a match to celebrate the switching on of the lights. Yeovil won 8-0 but a crowd of more than 450 watched the fixture. Season 2014/15 saw the club enter the F.A. Vase for the first time but Wessex League Bemerton Heath Harlequins proved too strong and won the tie at Moor Lane 5-0.

The team repeated their 4th position finish in the league and were one of only two sides to defeat runaway champions Barnstaple Town. A run to the quarter finals of the Les Phillips Cup was ended by the eventual Cup winners Willand Rovers. At the end of the season manager Paul Down announced he would be standing down after five successful seasons in charge. Season 2015/16 saw Andy Mitchell and Chris Wise take charge of the club as joint managers. A tough first half to the season with a completely new look team saw the team struggling in the bottom three, however the New Year saw the side enjoy better fortunes and a strong second half to the campaign saw the Wasps climb to a respectable 16th position. This season also saw the club enter the F.A. Cup for the first time and Wincanton beat Wessex League Premier division side (1 step higher) Whitchurch United 31 in a replay at Moor Lane following a 1-1 draw in Hampshire. That victory earned the club an away tie at Southern league side Winchester City, a tie we would eventually lose 5-1 but a good experience for all concerned. The 2016/2017 season was the 2nd under the Wise and Mitchell reign and with a settled squad the club looked destined for a solid top half finish until injuries to some key players disrupted things around Christmas time and meant the Wasps finished in 13th place overall. Season 2017/2018 season saw a management shuffle with Chris Wise being the sole manager and having Andy Mitchell and Gary Chapman as his playing assistants. A 10th placed finish was secured as well as a first win in the F.A. Vase, 2-1 at Bridport from the league above. For the 2018/19 season Mitch stood down from his role as assistant manager so he could concentrate solely on playing. To fill the role the club welcomed back former player Matt Peters to work alongside Chris and Chappo. Too many drawn games hampered the team – 14 from their 38 matches which meant the team had to settle for a 14th placed finish. The season 2019/20 saw an improvement with the club in 8th position when the season was cancelled owing to the global pandemic. With most of the squad retained for the new season alongside a few additions, hopes are high of a finish closer to the top of the table. Season 2021/22 saw Wincanton make a sluggish start to the campaign with just eleven points from the opening eleven games. The team then did not lose another match in the regular League season as they embarked on an incredible 29 game undefeated run winning 24 of those games and drawing just five. The side scored 126 League goals and achieved the club’s highest ever League position of third. This allowed the club to join the end of season promotion playoffs but it was one game too far as we lost 2-0 at Welton Rovers who went on to win promotion themselves. Season 2022/23 saw Wincanton reach the FA Cup First Qualifying Round for the first time in their history. A 6-2 win away at Tadley Calleva was followed up by a 3-0 replay win over Camberley Town, both sides from a step above in the Wessex League. AFC Totton from the Southern League were too good in the next round but it was a good experience. Wincanton again qualified for the end of season playoffs but lost 10-9 on penalties against Oldland Abbotonians. The season also saw the start of the Ladies section of the club with the side competing in the Somerset League Division Two.

Supporting the club... There are several more ways of getting your company name out there that we can help you with. Perimeter banners, perimeter boards, programme advertising, website advertising.. they are all available within the club.

Perimeter Boards are one option that many companies have chosen recently. Match action pictures often appear online either on websites or social media so your company board could be seen regularly as well as those who attend the match. Perimeter boards cost £250 for the first year (including a one-off manufacturing charge of £100) then cost £100 a year thereafter.

Perimeter Banners are a similar option but made from a hard wearing fabric. The same size as a board (2.4m x 915mm or 8’ x 3’), they cost £200 (including a one off manufacturing charge of £75) then cost £100 a year thereafter.

Programme Advertising has also proven popular in recent seasons. After having “gone online” in recent seasons, the club have decided to go back to printing a copy for its supporters, a popular move with many non-league fans too. Advertising costs just £100 for a full page (A5) or £50 for a half page; this is for a full season of matchday programmes so this season, at least 21 programmes. You can change the actual composition of the programme each week to keep it topical and/or time sensitive!

Website Advertising is the cheapest form of advertising and is just £25. For this, your link/logo will sit on a carousel on the front page and when visitors click the link, it will take them to your website. Our club website is one of the most popular ones in the league with more than 2,000 unique visits each week during the season. If you are interested in any of these deals, please email the club secretary, Martin McConachie, on secretary@hengroveathletic.com or ring 07432 614494.

Hengrove Athletic Club History Hengrove Athletic F.C was formed in 1948 from players demobbed from National Service. As a footnote, there is also wartime history to the club colours of green and white. With rationing and many shortages, football shirts were virtually unobtainable, so all of the members of Hengrove Athletic F.C donated an ordinary white shirt and a mother of one of the players kindly dyed them green in the bath at her Knowle home. The colour green had no symbolic meaning. It was the only colour available at the time! The founding fathers of Hengrove Athletic F.C then agreed to retain these colours for the new club. A successful application was made to join the Bristol and Suburban League and they were placed in Division 3 for the start of 1948/49 season. A Reserve XI was established in 1950 and in the same year Hengrove Hall was rented for club meetings and social gatherings. The club continued to expand and the ‘A’ XI started in 1953, followed by the 30-plus XI in 1959. These four football teams made Hengrove Athletic F.C the largest club in the Bristol and Suburban League at the time – after just eleven years. A ‘B’ XI replaced the 30 plus in 1962. The long search for a ground came to fruition on Sunday 7 June 1964 when Norton Lane was officially opened and Hengrove Athletic F.C took up residence. The first XI was accepted by the Somerset Senior League for the 1974/75 season, where they remained until 2005/06 when they were runaway, unbeaten, Premier Division Champions and joined the Western League for the start of the 2006/07 season. Our Floodlights and Stand were installed at the ground in 2007/08 to achieve the necessary ground grading of the Western League. The EWW Stand was installed at the ground in 2012/13 to achieve the necessary ground grading of entry into the FA Cup and future possible promotions. The first XI finished runners-up in Western League Division One in 2012/13, achieving a promotion to the Premier Division. They also lifted the Les Phillips League Cup (Western League) in 2015/16 before winning promotion to the Premier Division again the following season. In 2017/18 under new manager John Durbin, the club finished ninth in the Premier Division, their highest ever position and were also the highest placed Bristol side in the division. However, this was followed by relegation back to Division One in 2018/19. Jamie Hillman returned for a third spell as manager in the summer of 2019 but the next two seasons failed to play to a finish due to the COVID pandemic. Last season, 2021/22, did get completed and for the fourth year running, the Grove ended in mid table. This year sees the club celebrate its 75th anniversary.
