Welcome to Kellaway Park, the home of ‘The Blues’ of Helston Athletic Football Club. The 22/23 season was without doubt the club’s most successful of recent times, if not that of any in the clubs one hundred and twenty seven year history. Whilst progressing further in The FA Cup than ever before in addition to completing a Cornwall Senior Cup and Western League Les Phillips Cup double exceeded expectations, an early FA Vase exit along with finishing sixth in the league has given room for yet further gains to be achieved. Away from the flagship the wider club triumphed in three additional county cup competitions whilst finishing as runners up in a further two. Several youth teams were also crowned league and / or league cup champions. Win or lose the club and town remain proud of everyone who represented Helston Athletic Football Club last season. As a club we continue to strive for continued improvement both on and off the field of play. Over the forthcoming months we hope the results of the dedication and hard work of those who give up so much of their time will continue to enhance your match day experience whether you are a player, an official or a spectator. Compliance has become ever more important to help ensure everybody enjoys their football in the safest of environments. Helston Athletic Football Club are therefore pleased to share that it was recently awarded an England Football Accredited Club 3* rating. The award reflects the club’s commitment to the future of football within our local community. As always, the club remains extremely grateful for the valuable contributions of the numerous organisations, businesses and volunteers who continue to support us. Without your individual support running a successful football club for all ages would be impossible – thank you. Finally, we hope you enjoy your visit to Kellaway Park today, so much so that you return very soon. Here’s to another successful year of footballing action and for all things Helston.
Helston Athletic is a well established Community based football club offering all that visit a warm and friendly welcome. The Club’s ground, Kellaway Park, offers great playing and clubhouse facilities. In recent years, the Club has been successful both on and off the pitch and, as a result, we are now looking for additional people to join our team. Not the one ON the pitch but the one OFF it. The team behind the team, if that makes sense. We are looking for anyone that feels that they can contribute whether it be in a professional, administrative or hands on role. With matchdays becoming ever more popular, we are looking to volunteers to support our hospitality team, stewards, selling draw tickets, working on the gates or even just helping to tidy up after the game. You’ll get to watch the football free of charge but better still, you’ll be joining a small team of dedicated volunteers that make Helston Athletic Football club extra special. If you can help for only a few hours per month, that would be fantastic. If you feel this could be for you, please email chairman Paul Hendy at paul.m.hendy@btinternet.com or call him on 07740 812555.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Welcome All, Having extended our unbeaten run in all competitions to eight matches at Ilfracombe Town last Saturday, this afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Welton Rovers to Kellaway Park. Likewise we welcome our match officials Neil Lane, Neil Pitt and Jack Jeffery. A Christmas / New Year fixture programme can define a season for many clubs up and down the country and that is no different for ourselves. With this afternoons match marking the halfway point of our 23/24 league campaign it is a must win game ahead of six league fixtures against teams currently residing in the top half of the league. Following today we head to local rivals Falmouth Town on Boxing Day before we entertain Torpoint Athletic on Saturday 30th December. Both these matches KO at 3:00pm. Since our last home fixture three Saturdays ago the club has again been saddened by the passing of a further life member and long time volunteer. It was with heavy hearts we sadly said our goodbyes to May Boaden (pictured), last Monday. Along with late husband David, May clocked up many miles supporting Helston, no more so than in recent seasons since we joined the Western League. At the club May would always be available to lend a willing hand. For those attending this afternoon’s match we request that you respectfully join us in remembering May with a minutes silence prior to kick off. The clubs condolences very much go to all of May's family and friends at this difficult time. With this afternoon being our final home fixture ahead of the festive holiday, may I close by taking this opportunity to wish everyone a Very Merry, Peaceful and Enjoyable Christmas. Please be sure to enjoy your afternoon and as always, thank you for your support. Paul Hendy (Chairman)

Interest in promotion from the Premier Division of the Toolstation Western League will be extended from the top two places to the top five, in the 2023/24 season. The Football Association have announced that next season, there will be a fourteam Play-Off in each of the sixteen Step 5 divisions, the level of the non-league pyramid occupied by the Western Leagues Premier Division, guaranteeing a second promotion place into the Southern League. Last season, Saltash United were denied promotion by Bristol Manor Farm, who managed to retain their Southern League status, defeating their Western League rivals at the Creek. The FA’s proposals for promotion and relegation, announced in March 2023, have signalled that the inter-step play off is a thing of the past, with Western League Clubs now competing against each other for a playoff place, subject to their facilities meeting ground grading requirements. Next season, two sides are set to be relegated from the Southern League Division One South, as the FA seek to increase the divisional size at Step 4 to 22 Clubs per division. The FA’s latest reorganisation is good news for Western League Premier Division Clubs as only one side will be liable for relegation next season. From the 2024/25 season, the FA have announced their intention that four Clubs will be relegated from Southern League Division One South, along with the other seven divisions that cover the country at Step 4. However, the future of the Western League is uncertain going into the 2024/25 season, with an FA working group currently looking into the future structure of Step 5 and 6 football in the South West, following the collapse of the merger between the South West Peninsula League and the Western League, earlier this year. Should the FA undertake a reorganisation of football in the South West and create an additional Step 5 Division to address the considerable travel distances Clubs currently face, this may impact both how and how many sides are promoted and relegated across the region.

FOCUS ON WELTON ROVERS
Founded as Welton Red Star in the coal mining town of Midsomer Norton in 1887, Welton Rovers are five time winners of the Western League and its longest serving members. Rovers’ relationship with the Western League began in the 1903/04 season. The club’s first few decades saw them triumph in multiple Somerset Senior Cups, and win their first Western League title in 1912, but a failed attempt at professionalism would see the club go bankrupt and unable to compete in the 1923/24 season. This blip is the only break in Welton’s membership of the Western League from 1903 to the modern-day, the club holding the dubious honour of having never been relegated— or promoted — outside of the two division set-up. In the years following World War 2, Welton built the most successful Amateur side in the area with four consecutive Amateur Cup victories, and in Brian Barker, Keith Simmons and Eddie Attwood, the best forward line for miles around. Rovers’ golden period came in the mid-1960s following the appointment, in 1963, of the club’s first official manager, former Huddersfield Town and Bristol City striker Arnold Rodgers, and the return to professionalism. Welton became only the second club to win the Western League three times in a row — after Portsmouth FC— at the turn of the century, with wins in ’65, ’66 (undefeated!) and ’67. Potent throughout the time was the club’s record goalscorer, Ian Henderson, who scored 321 goals in his spells with Welton. Rovers’ triumphs brought with them an inflated reputation and showpiece matches, with the club’s best ever FA Cup performance seeing them face AFC Bournemouth (then known as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic) in 1966 as well as exotic away days for end of season matches against a Guernsey XI in 1965 and to the Costa Brava the following year. As is often the case, Welton’s successes brought excesses and financial problems, and following the departure of Rodgers and 10 of his first-team squad, to Bath City, a period of uncertainty and mediocrity followed. That was until Dave Stone took the managerial reigns in 1971 and led Welton to their fourth, and most recent, league title in the 73/74 season. Other showcases of the early ‘70s would see Juventus and Leeds United legend John Charles play and score at West Clewes for Merthyr Tydfil in the FA Trophy, and a Rothmans Cup final against now League One side Wycombe Wanderers. The tail end of the 20th century saw Welton trade promotions and relegations, creating many a club legend along the way. Managers such as Geoff Elliott and Steve Coles brought good times, while legendary players like Malcolm Beck and Graham Withey commanded transfer fees to ...
FOCUS ON WELTON ROVERS FC
... move on to Football League clubs. The 1980s saw huge improvements to facilities with the expansion of the club house —which remains one of the best in the league to this day — and the installation of floodlights in 1988, the erection of which were celebrated with a friendly against Oxford United, then managed by Mark Lawrenson. The 1990’s started with possibly the club’s most ridiculous season, finishing rock bottom of the Premier Division and getting through three managers. The third of which, Peter De Sisto, brought former Football League players Alan Biley and Gary Stanley to the club, but could only win 3 games all season. As bad as the decade began, it ended on a high with Rovers’ locally assembled side winning promotion back to the Premier Division, under the tutelage of Adie Britton. The past two decades have brought plenty of good times for Rovers’ large and vociferous support, known as the Green Army. In 2006, Chris Mountford led Welton to their most successful season since the 1970s, with a 4th place Premier Division finish and Les Phillips Cup Semi-Final. Then, under Mark Harrington in 2010, Rovers won the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time, at Huish Park. A semi-final victory against Yeovil Town landed Rovers a final with Bridgwater Town, who they defeated on penalties to claim the silverware. That side contained Nick Beaverstock, the man who would lead the Greens to their next taste of glory — as manager — when they won promotion to the Western League Premier Division in 2015. Beaverstock would go on to become the Rovers manager to take charge of the second highest number of matches, totalling 223 after a caretaker spell last season. Former player Tom Smith took charge of the club in March 2020 & made incredible progress in a short space of time. With over 225 appearances for the club, Smithy has an undeniable understanding of the Welton DNA and guided the club to promotion in his first season in charge, breaking multiple club records along the way. With attendances the largest they have been for more than 40 years, Welton Rovers are ready for, and excited about, the challenges that Premier Division football will bring.
Player Profiles... Kyle MOORE (GK). Kyle joined us part way through the season from Plymouth Parkway and was part of the team that won back to back promotions. An excellent shot stopper and distributor of the ball, he will add great value to our new campaign. Jordan BENTLEY. Jordan enters his 3rd season with the club. He continues to be a dominant CB who can play within different formations. and was part of our cup double success in the previous campaign. Aaron BENTLEY. Aaron enters his 3rd season with the club. He is a technically efficient defender with attributes to play in other positions. Aaron has an excellent football pedigree and has operated at higher levels. Harrison JEWELL (Capt) An exceptional season last year, H put in many M.O.M performances and won 2 of our end of season awards. An influential CB who has also been made captain for this campaign. Callum O’BRIEN. A throwback to how defenders used to be, no nonsense and hard hitting. Lethal at set plays and can play on the deck as well. Deceptively quick over 10-15 metres. Tom MOXHAM. Excellent pedigree having completed a Plymouth Argyle scholarship followed by four years at the University of Pittsburgh. Expect to see Mox impacting games as a full back or a wing back with his excellent delivery. Dave BARKER. Has set the standard for right sided full backs/wing backs over the past five years. Barks regularly chips in with double figures each season, a remarkable stat given his position. He actually grabbed a 90th minute winner here for his former club Saltash last season. He will bring value at both ends of the pitch with added leadership qualities. Tom PAYNE. Payney had an exceptional campaign last season. He chipped in with 15 goals and 15 assists from midfield, and scored in the first of our two cup final triumphs last campaign. Baga MARIKO. Baga joined part way through this season. A young and very athletic defensive midfielder that gets that awkward toe in to thwart attacks. He was signed as we didn’t have this profile of a player so compliments the midfield well and gives us options.
Player Profiles... Jacob SMITH. The youngest of our summer signings. Played the most number of games for Torpoint last season as a base midfielder. Has worked with the manager before at Plymouth Parkway. Has put in some impressive performances in preseason and continues to adopt and excellent approach on the training ground. Stevie COLWELL. Stevie has operated at higher levels having previously played with Weymouth, Tiverton and more recently, Plymouth Parkway. A ball playing midfielder with exceptional technical and tactical quality. Tyler ELLIOTT. Ty is a versatile player that can operate in many positions within the team. Last season he was regularly impacting games from wider positions. He has a terrific work ethic and appetite for the game. Kai CORNISH. Kai has now completed his university studies and therefore feels like a new signing. An accomplished dribbler that can impacts games in the final third. We are hopeful it will be a big campaign for him. Sam CARTER. Cart’s season had lift off around September last campaign. He found himself amongst the goals and assists from an attacking midfield position. Extremely athletic, Carts will be looking to build on his successful campaign last time around. Jordan COPP. Jordan is one of the most technically gifted players the manager has worked with. He brings bags of experience and pedigree having operated at Step 2 with Weymouth. An attacking player of exceptional quality who can operate wide or centrally. He created 18 assists in the last campaign. Rikki SHEPHERD. Rikki is a lightning quick striker who finished top scorer last campaign with 26 goals. He proved a big game player scoring in both of our cup winning finals. We are expecting more big things this season.
Jamie SIMMONDS. The manager honestly doesn’t know how this lad gets through each day! Aside from that, he is starting to flourish as a footballer in this environment and is more regularly impacting games in offensive positions. Jamie is one of the best technicians in the team and we are expecting big things from him this season. Curtis DAMERELL. Another manager described Curtis as ‘the complete number 9’. He was joint top scorer in the Western League last season. Curtis has had a slower start to the pre-season due to injury. However he is now well on the road to recovery and is getting better all the time on the training ground and in matches. Expect him to add huge value to the front line this season.
