Kellaway Park, Clodgey Lane, Helston, Cornwall TR13 8PJ

Welcome to Kellaway Park, the home of ‘The Blues’ of Helston Athletic Football Club. The 22/23 season was without doubt the club’s most successful of recent times, if not that of any in the clubs one hundred and twenty seven year history. Whilst progressing further in The FA Cup than ever before in addition to completing a Cornwall Senior Cup and Western League Les Phillips Cup double exceeded expectations, an early FA Vase exit along with finishing sixth in the league has given room for yet further gains to be achieved. Away from the flagship the wider club triumphed in three additional county cup competitions whilst finishing as runners up in a further two. Several youth teams were also crowned league and / or league cup champions. Win or lose the club and town remain proud of everyone who represented Helston Athletic Football Club last season. As a club we continue to strive for continued improvement both on and off the field of play. Over the forthcoming months we hope the results of the dedication and hard work of those who give up so much of their time will continue to enhance your match day experience whether you are a player, an official or a spectator. Compliance has become ever more important to help ensure everybody enjoys their football in the safest of environments. Helston Athletic Football Club are therefore pleased to share that it was recently awarded an England Football Accredited Club 3* rating. The award reflects the club’s commitment to the future of football within our local community. As always, the club remains extremely grateful for the valuable contributions of the numerous organisations, businesses and volunteers who continue to support us. Without your individual support running a successful football club for all ages would be impossible – thank you. Finally, we hope you enjoy your visit to Kellaway Park today, so much so that you return very soon. Here’s to another successful year of footballing action and for all things Helston.

Helston Athletic is a well established Community based football club offering all that visit a warm and friendly welcome. The Club’s ground, Kellaway Park, offers great playing and clubhouse facilities. In recent years, the Club has been successful both on and off the pitch and, as a result, we are now looking for additional people to join our team. Not the one ON the pitch but the one OFF it. The team behind the team, if that makes sense. We are looking for anyone that feels that they can contribute whether it be in a professional, administrative or hands on role. With matchdays becoming ever more popular, we are looking to volunteers to support our hospitality team, stewards, selling draw tickets, working on the gates or even just helping to tidy up after the game. You’ll get to watch the football free of charge but better still, you’ll be joining a small team of dedicated volunteers that make Helston Athletic Football club extra special. If you can help for only a few hours per month, that would be fantastic. If you feel this could be for you, please email chairman Paul Hendy at paul.m.hendy@btinternet.com or call him on 07740 812555. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Welcome all, For a second time in as many weeks, our opponents this afternoon are first time visitors to Kellaway Park so please join me in welcoming the players, officials and supporters of Oldland Abbotonians. Likewise we welcome today’s match officials Josh Eyre, Adam Price and Scott Coutts. Similar to Nailsea & Tickenham FC a fortnight ago, Oldland Abbotonians secured promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at the conclusion of last season, albeit via the tension of the play-offs. The reverse of today’s fixture took place just six weeks ago with Helston bringing home all three points. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the match but all that did returned full of praise for the warm welcome they received whilst also remarking on the amazing progress the club is making towards improving its facilities. Congratulations and well done to all those that are driving the club forward. Last Sunday saw a crowd just shy of two hundred ascend upon Kellaway Park to witness the clubs first ever appearance in a FA Cup 1st Round fixture, such an honour deservedly earned by Helston Athletic Women. Having battled hard throughout the match, unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day with visitors, Exeter City Women, comfortably progressing into the next round. The cup action for our women continues tomorrow as they travel to Sticker FC for a 2:00pm KO in the MH Goals Cornwall Women’s Cup. With little between the teams who both play in the South West Regional Women’s Football League Western Division, this should be a much closer encounter, the winners of which will book a place in this seasons quarter-finals. Not wanting to miss out on the cup action, today’s Helston squad travel to Saltash United on Tuesday in defence of The Les Phillips Cup. Having already overcome Falmouth Town in this seasons competition, a win over The Ashes would also see us progress into the quarter-finals when we would play Buckland Athletic here at Blues HQ. Tuesdays KO is at 7:45pm For those who keep up to date with the local football scene via social media, I’m sure you will have read earlier this week that Helston striker Rubin Wilson has transferred to local rivals Falmouth Town. Although never wanting to see a player leave, he departs with the clubs best wishes and a massive thank you for some great memories. Whichever team you are supporting today, please enjoy your afternoon and as always, thank you for your support. Paul Hendy (Chairman)

Interest in promotion from the Premier Division of the Toolstation Western League will be extended from the top two places to the top five, in the 2023/24 season. The Football Association have announced that next season, there will be a fourteam Play-Off in each of the sixteen Step 5 divisions, the level of the non-league pyramid occupied by the Western Leagues Premier Division, guaranteeing a second promotion place into the Southern League. Last season, Saltash United were denied promotion by Bristol Manor Farm, who managed to retain their Southern League status, defeating their Western League rivals at the Creek. The FA’s proposals for promotion and relegation, announced in March 2023, have signalled that the inter-step play off is a thing of the past, with Western League Clubs now competing against each other for a playoff place, subject to their facilities meeting ground grading requirements. Next season, two sides are set to be relegated from the Southern League Division One South, as the FA seek to increase the divisional size at Step 4 to 22 Clubs per division. The FA’s latest reorganisation is good news for Western League Premier Division Clubs as only one side will be liable for relegation next season. From the 2024/25 season, the FA have announced their intention that four Clubs will be relegated from Southern League Division One South, along with the other seven divisions that cover the country at Step 4. However, the future of the Western League is uncertain going into the 2024/25 season, with an FA working group currently looking into the future structure of Step 5 and 6 football in the South West, following the collapse of the merger between the South West Peninsula League and the Western League, earlier this year. Should the FA undertake a reorganisation of football in the South West and create an additional Step 5 Division to address the considerable travel distances Clubs currently face, this may impact both how and how many sides are promoted and relegated across the region.

FOCUS ON OLDLAND ABBOTONIANS

Bristol and District League handbooks of the 1920's revealed that the Oldland football club was founded as St. Anne’s (Oldland) in 1910. Little is known about the club's fortunes between the wars but they became founder members of the Bristol Premier Combination in 1962 and were promoted to the Gloucester County League in 1973, remaining there for twelve seasons until being re-elected as Oldland Decora in 1986. Pupils at Hanham Abbots school launched Abbotonians football club as juniors in 1947 and they enjoyed many league and cup successes in the early years, including Cup wins in 1961, 1966 and 1972. The two clubs merged in 1998, playing as Oldland Abbotonians in the Somerset Senior League. Oldland Abbotonians won the Somerset Senior League Division One in 2004/05, were Premier Division runners up in 2005/06 and eventually promoted to the Toolstation League in 2006/07. Oldland has often been described as a nursery for Bristol Rovers with Vic Lambden, Peter Sampson, Brian Bush and Mike Tippets all playing for the club before turning professional at Eastville. Former Rovers favourite Bobby Jones was one of many successful Oldland managers, a list which also includes David Hillier. Abbots rose to heady heights under the leadership of Alan Bush in the 1980's with the help of former Rovers players Jeff Meacham, the late Steve Talboys (Wimbledon) plus Rovers favourites Graham Day, Peter Aitken and Phil Bater. Among other youngsters who left Abbots to play for Rovers were Stuart Taylor, Phil Kite and Kevin Westaway. Former Bristol Rovers player David Hillier helped manage The O’s to become the first ever Division 1 side to win the Les Phillips Cup. Having finished 4th and been assured that promotion was imminent at the end of 2015/16 Oldland were disappointingly not promoted and had to start again with the squad moving away. 2016/17 was a pivotal year as although the football side disappointed, through fundraising and grants the club spent in excess of £70,000 on ground improvements including safety fencing, stand covers, pitch maintenance equipment, a new stand and CCTV system and in the past few years the ground has been fully enclosed with new dressing rooms added and the bar extended as chairman Clayton Woodman has grown the club massively off the pitch. .

FOCUS ON OLDLAND ABBOTONIANS FC

In 2017/18 Clayton Woodman and Steve Cains returned to the club they had played for before stepping aside to bring in Paul Weeks as Director of Football, the first team manager is Craig Laird with years of experience at the likes of Weston, Dorchester and Yate assisted by Darren Sealey and Nic Mann. Being promoted through the play offs into the Toolstation Western League Premier Division and a welcome return to the FA Cup for the club from 2023/24 onwards saw Oldland very much looking to the future. The Reserves are in the Bristol Premier Combination and are managed by Steve Cains, Craig Durnell and from 2018/19 a 3rd team play in the Bristol & District League, managed by Mitchell Jones and Dave Griffin. In addition to this, there is an Under 18s side managed by Griffin who play in the Western Counties Floodlit League.

Player Profiles... Kyle MOORE (GK). Kyle joined us part way through the season from Plymouth Parkway and was part of the team that won back to back promotions. An excellent shot stopper and distributor of the ball, he will add great value to our new campaign. Jordan BENTLEY. Jordan enters his 3rd season with the club. He continues to be a dominant CB who can play within different formations. and was part of our cup double success in the previous campaign. Aaron BENTLEY. Aaron enters his 3rd season with the club. He is a technically efficient defender with attributes to play in other positions. Aaron has an excellent football pedigree and has operated at higher levels. Harrison JEWELL (Capt) An exceptional season last year, H put in many M.O.M performances and won 2 of our end of season awards. An influential CB who has also been made captain for this campaign. Callum O’BRIEN. A throwback to how defenders used to be, no nonsense and hard hitting. Lethal at set plays and can play on the deck as well. Deceptively quick over 10-15 metres. Tom MOXHAM. Excellent pedigree having completed a Plymouth Argyle scholarship followed by four years at the University of Pittsburgh. Expect to see Mox impacting games as a full back or a wing back with his excellent delivery. Dave BARKER. Has set the standard for right sided full backs/wing backs over the past five years. Barks regularly chips in with double figures each season, a remarkable stat given his position. He actually grabbed a 90th minute winner here for his former club Saltash last season. He will bring value at both ends of the pitch with added leadership qualities. Tom PAYNE. Payney had an exceptional campaign last season. He chipped in with 15 goals and 15 assists from midfield, and scored in the first of our two cup final triumphs last campaign. Baga MARIKO. Baga joined part way through this season. A young and very athletic defensive midfielder that gets that awkward toe in to thwart attacks. He was signed as we didn’t have this profile of a player so compliments the midfield well and gives us options.

Player Profiles... Jacob SMITH. The youngest of our summer signings. Played the most number of games for Torpoint last season as a base midfielder. Has worked with the manager before at Plymouth Parkway. Has put in some impressive performances in preseason and continues to adopt and excellent approach on the training ground. Stevie COLWELL. Stevie has operated at higher levels having previously played with Weymouth, Tiverton and more recently, Plymouth Parkway. A ball playing midfielder with exceptional technical and tactical quality. Tyler ELLIOTT. Ty is a versatile player that can operate in many positions within the team. Last season he was regularly impacting games from wider positions. He has a terrific work ethic and appetite for the game. Kai CORNISH. Kai has now completed his university studies and therefore feels like a new signing. An accomplished dribbler that can impacts games in the final third. We are hopeful it will be a big campaign for him. Sam CARTER. Cart’s season had lift off around September last campaign. He found himself amongst the goals and assists from an attacking midfield position. Extremely athletic, Carts will be looking to build on his successful campaign last time around. Jordan COPP. Jordan is one of the most technically gifted players the manager has worked with. He brings bags of experience and pedigree having operated at Step 2 with Weymouth. An attacking player of exceptional quality who can operate wide or centrally. He created 18 assists in the last campaign. Rikki SHEPHERD. Rikki is a lightning quick striker who finished top scorer last campaign with 26 goals. He proved a big game player scoring in both of our cup winning finals. We are expecting more big things this season.

Jamie SIMMONDS. The manager honestly doesn’t know how this lad gets through each day! Aside from that, he is starting to flourish as a footballer in this environment and is more regularly impacting games in offensive positions. Jamie is one of the best technicians in the team and we are expecting big things from him this season. Curtis DAMERELL. Another manager described Curtis as ‘the complete number 9’. He was joint top scorer in the Western League last season. Curtis has had a slower start to the pre-season due to injury. However he is now well on the road to recovery and is getting better all the time on the training ground and in matches. Expect him to add huge value to the front line this season.
