Halo is a registered charity and social enterprise running 21 sport and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire, Bridgend County Borough, Shropshire and Swindon on behalf of the local authorities and other partners. We often discuss our status as a Social Enterprise, but many of our customers are unsure of what it actually means and more importantly, how it benefits them. Being a Social Enterprise means Halo trades for social purposes. We are a registered charity and 'not for profit' organisation, with no shareholders.

So users are helping to sustain leisure activities for everyone in their local community to enjoy – from pre and post natal exercise classes, babies in the ‘SwimA-Song’ sessions, specialist exercise classes for people with MS, to toddlers at Gymnastics and to senior group exercise classes.

Even with all the lockdowns happening this year, it was amazing to see so many of our members returning when restrictions were eased and following all the guidelines to keep us all safe. Gyms proved to be one of the safest places for exercise and working out definitely helped us all to stay active, strong and healthy.

We were delighted to report that, from the months of July - September, just after the first lockdown, we saw 122,728 sessions across our centres and that included gym, swim, group exercise and other Halo activities! Amazing!

Who would have guessed that 2020 would have turned out how it did; with the pandemic sweeping the globe and affecting so many? Whilst keeping active was certainly more of a challenge it was also a saving grace in most people's lives.

On your bike New funding gets us a step closer to Herefordshire’s new cycle track

An exciting cycle track is coming to Hereford!

During 2020 the project team led by Halo Leisure, continued to develop the vision for a new facility at Hereford Leisure Centre, securing funding and support from Herefordshire Council, Sport England and British Cycling.

The aim is for the facility to support cycling and recreational development for the whole community. The project is planned to be completed in the next few years. That's something bike beginners, families and keen cyclists alike can look forward to!

We carried on with our National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) which - supported by local GPs - signposts patients to Halo so they can secure expert support to promote health and fitness when they need it most. During lockdown we were in touch (over 900 times!) with clients in our centres in South Wales and sent out over 250 home activity programmes!

Changing Places facilities - changing experiences

To enable our customers with disabilities and medical conditions to get out and about and enjoy the activities which many of us take for granted, we installed a Changing Places toilet facility at Bridgend Life Centre. This enables customers to use the bathroom in safety and comfort with the benefit of more space and the right equipment, including a height adjustable changing bench, a peninsular toilet and a ceiling hoist.

FEEL GOOD FOR LIFE (DEMENTIA FRIENDLY PROGRAMME) HALO LEISURE

We are super proud of our Active Communities team in Bridgend County who claimed the prestigious national award for ‘Impact through physical activity’ for the 'Feel Good for Life' programme. It includes a variety of activities to help those with dementia and their carers to stay active. One of the main activities provided were the dementia friendly swimming sessions, which have been such a success story for so many people living with dementia.

During lockdown, all members of the Feel Good for Life groups who were at risk of isolation were supported with regular newsletters, a telephone support service and online social and physical activity sessions. A further £8,085 was secured from the National Lottery's Covid-19 top up fund to deliver this work.

Since 2019, the programme has grown considerably, incorporating more activities and venues. The team recently started to reach out to anyone in the wider community feeling lonely or low. To get an award in this area means the world to us as it really pushes the core values of Halo Leisure to break down barriers to participation and create healthier communities.

We were also finalists in the Workforce Development Award and Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Top of the class We maintained our 'Excellent’ Rating for the Halo and Bridgend County Borough Council Healthy Living Partnership following a QUEST (Quality Award for Sport and Leisure) for Active Communities Direction Review.

Price - never a barrier to participation at Halo

Covid-19 has, we know, hit people’s pockets, and our belief that price should never be a barrier to participation was more important than ever. 2020 saw us deliver approximately 47,986 discounted sessions throughout the year as a result of our accessible pricing schemes, worth over a million pound of savings to communities we serve.

Around 37,000 Halo customers are now enjoying discounted pricing as part of our concessions for young people, seniors, people with disabilities and those individuals and families on low wages and in receipt of benefits.

We secured a Climate Change Top-Up grant (over £11k) to replace the Plate Heat Exchanger at Ogmore Valley Life Centre, an initiative that will improve the efficiency of the boilers from 76.2% to 90% and reduce the annual gas consumption by an estimated £1,200 per annum, as well as reducing the carbon emissions by approximately
