GCSE Results 2013 A

lthough the summer seems quite a while ago now with the nights drawing in and temperatures falling, it was time for celebration again here at Hall Mead with 73% of students achieving 5 A*-C Grades including English and Maths at a time when GCSE grades are being squeezed nationally. This equals our second best set of results ever. Students continued to perform well with the number of A*/A grades achieved, something we have been working hard on at the Academy. We had over 11 students who achieved 8 or more A*/A grades. We are proud of the students and staff who contributed so much hard work to these results and grateful to the parents whose support enabled such success.

Welcome to the Winter Edition of ‘Hallmeadia’. Yet again, the magazine is full of the outstanding achievements of our students both in and out of school time. A particular emphasis has been placed on recognising the amazing charity work that is going on at an individual, form group and whole school level.

It has been great to see how motivated the students are to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Hall Mead Boccia team On Friday 22nd November the Hall Mead Boccia team retained their title of champions of Havering in an exciting final against Marshalls Parks School at the YMCA in Romford.

Charity Football Matches Both Year 7 Chapman forms participated in a football match to raise money for their form charities; Children In Need and Cancer Research.

7CS raised over £20 on this day by selling cakes and drinks to our many spectators. It was a great effort as Mr Jones (playing on behalf of Mrs Sharma) and Mr Kwan joined in to represent each form. Although both teams showed tremendous skill, particularly in the blazing heat, Mr Kwan’s team won. We look forward to a repeat next year in hope of raising even more money for these very important charities.

At the end of the summer term, a football match was held between the two year 7 Dickens forms.

A large number of staff and pupils turned out to witness Mr. Lovelock’s form win 3 – 1 against 7DJS (Mr Jones and Miss Smith’s form.) The respective form tutors were also on the pitch, (despite the notable absence of Miss Smith) with Mr Jones playing in

goal and Mr Lovelock putting in a shift at the back. Alex Halliwell bagged two goals, and Charlie Myers scored the third, guiding a simple flick off the foot into the corner, leaving the sprawling keeper helpless. Even the late introduction of substitute Andrew Maduabueke couldn’t prevent a victory for 7DL, with Solomon netting a consolation and Jed

Wollen seeing his late effort soar over the bar. Three of Mr Jones’ forward players also fell victim to some ‘interesting’ tackling from Mr Lovelock. All in all it was an enjoyable afternoon for players and spectators alike, with the money raised from drinks sales and the ‘Guess the Scorer’ competition going towards the charity Starlight.

Wanderers Haven For the last non-uniform day of the 2012/13 school year, Hall Mead decided we would raise funds for a local charity.

Each form held a democratic vote from a choice of three charities and the resounding winner was Wanderers Haven Animal Sanctuary situated on Front Lane in Cranham.

Wanderers Haven take in a number of different pets that have been abandoned or badly treated and the Haven’s owner, Frankie Wagstaff and her committed team give the animals the love they deserve and look to re-house them.

There is a significant cost to running the Haven and the charity relies heavily on donations.

Hall Mead was proud to deliver them a cheque for £608.80 which Frankie Wagstaff was delighted to receive.

Movember As some of you may have noticed at parents evening and awards evening, some members of staff have grown moustaches to raise awareness for the Movember charity, which is the charity for prostate and testicular cancer. Mr Lovelock, Mr Dennis, Mr Cox, Mr Lucas, Mr Allen, Mr Maher and Mr Zalicks are pictured here, but other moustache growers included Mr Burke, Mr Hales, Mr Swan, Mr Hughes and Mr Morritt.

As the winners for the ‘most funds raised by a form’, Mr Khwaja’s form (now 8WK) had the privilege of delivering the cheque in person.

Two of Mr Khwaja’s students, Katie Osborne and Lauren Greenland, met with the staff at Wanderers Haven and presented them with the cheque.

The girls were fantastic ambassadors for the school and even got to meet some of the pets in their care. We’re pretty sure their parents may be asked if they can have a pet kitten for Christmas!

Race for Life

During the summer, many of us joined together to FIGHT cancer! We took part in the Race for Life at Chelmsford Park!

Some of us walked but many of us ran and as it was such a hot day, it’s incredible that we even completed the race!

TOGETHER WE RAISED OVER ÂŁ400!!!

Leg Waxing Georgia Smith (now in 10DG) helped not only raise money BUT also awareness of conditions and charities close to her heart.

She bravely gave assemblies to the other students to highlight her chosen charity. In recognition of her charitable work Georgia deservedly won a Jack Petchey award.

One of Georgia’s fund raising events involved this man. Due to his popularity Mr Maher (Head of Maths) won a student vote to have his legs waxed. You can see how much he enjoyed it in the following photograph! Well done Mr Maher for being such a good sport.

Rememberance

Mr Khwaja’s form 8WK have kicked off the defence of the Hall Mead Charity Cup this year with the sale of poppies for the Royal British Legion. The Royal British Legion (RBL), sometimes referred to as simply The Legion, is the United Kingdom’s leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to those who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. All donations will be greatly received.

Health & Safety at Hall Mead School Earlier in the year Hall Mead purchased a defibrillator from SADSUK, (www.sadsuk.org.uk/ newsite), which is a local charity specialising in Sudden Arrhythmias.

The defibrillator is fully automatic and talks the operator through the actions required if a person has a suspected heart attack. Ten members of staff have already been fully trained in the use of the equipment and in the future all our first aiders will be undertaking training. We hope that we will never have to use the defibrillator at Hall Mead but feel it is a valuable piece of additional equipment in case of need.

Exciting times for the Drama Department Work is well underway on the building of our new drama block. As you can see from the photograph, we will soon have two drama studios next to the school hall for our students to use. The building is due to be completed in the new year and we can hardly wait! We will be asking our former deputy head Mr Brooks to officially open the building as he was responsible for the intiital design and planning of the project.

After many years of leaking windows, the two staircases in the New Wing have been revitalised with new energy saving double glazed windows. Also new doors, lighting, flooring and a fresh coat of paint have made the area brighter for pupils. These extensive works where fully funded from a Grant secured from the Education Funding Agency. You will have noticed that building works have commenced on the new Drama Suite, we envisage that this will be handed over to the Academy by the contractor at the beginning of the Spring Term.

Science Trip to the Natural History Museum On Monday 11 November 2013 all of Year 9 went on a Science Department trip to the Natural History Museum in London. The purpose was to help improve understanding of evolution which is part of our GCSE course. The aim of the trip was also to look at interesting exhibits that we hadn’t learnt about before. The Science Department combined with the museum to organise some interactive sessions in which we took part and found very enjoyable.

First we explored the red zone where there was a planet with an escalator going through it. When we went up the escalator, there were different types of rocks and minerals.

There is also an area about how humans evolved in only a short period of time from our ancestors. We learnt more about human evolution in the green zone. We looked at the fossil of a species called Australopithecus which was part ape/part human and lived on Earth about 3.2 million years ago. The scientists who found the fossil named her Lucy. There was also a fossil named the ‘flat faced man’ who had slightly different features to Lucy. The blue zone was crammed full of dinosaur fossils and stuffed animals from the past that are now extinct.

Overall the day was very enjoyable and we learnt a lot. The Science Department has now set us a challenge – to predict how humans will evolve into the future!

University of East London On 24th October some year 8 students went on an ‘Introduction to University’ trip. We first had a tour around the university and then we went to the room we were going to be working in. The first thing we did was have a quiz. The answers were based around university (how much you had to pay, how long you have to be at university, and more). My favourite part of the day was finding out we were making a stop motion animation and knowing that on the last day our parents or guardians might watch our films.

I really enjoyed the day and discovering a lot about university life. I came away from this trip with even more enthusiasm about attending university. It made me realise that I need to work hard at school and get good grades.

Scary book readings Only the bravest Year 7 and 8 pupils dared to enter the Library at lunchtimes during the week 4th/8th November.

Members of staff read a selection of ghostly and chilling tales to the audience, who hopefully did not have nightmares later. These included Victorian and modern day stories to cater for all tastes.

Year 8 pupils agreed that ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ by W.W. Jacob, read

by Mrs Clifton, was the scariest, but ‘The Man with the Yellow Face’ by

Anthony Horowitz, read by Ms Noller, was a close second. James R told us that he ‘liked the goriness’ of this short story. Year 7 students preferred the modern stories and a request for some zombie stories was made for next time.

Josh H, a year 8 pupil, commented that he had enjoyed the readings by staff, because they were able to use good vocal and facial expression which added to the pupils’ enjoyment. Josh M, also from Year 8 added, “The decorations created a spooky, scary atmosphere.”

Emily from Year 7 said, “ I like the teachers reading, because it makes the stories more interesting.” Two other Year 7 pupils, Phoebe and Emily, agreed that the activities and celebrations at Hall Mead were “amazing” and they both enjoyed listening to the terrifying tales.

Due to the success of this event and requests for more readings, the Library will be presenting Christmas story readings nearer to the end of term.

Drama Department trip to see “The Woman in Black” students to the Fortune Theatre in London’s Covent Garden to see the terrifying stage production of “The Woman in Black”.

Many of you may be familiar with the plot from seeing the film or studying the novel in English. Let me assure you, the stage production is far scarier than either of these! It is incredible how the entire play is performed by just two actors, playing a wide range of different characters.

The play provides an excellent example of multi role playing for our students to use in their own performance work.

On Thursday 24th October, Ms Garred, Mrs Lucas, Mrs Mitchell and Mr Lockwood took a group of

and even to being a bed. This is a great example to our students of how imaginative use of props can be really effective for an audience in their own performance work. Actors changed characters with just a quick change of hat or coat along with a change of body language, facial expression and tone of voice.

Although the performances were memorable and the production is one that is not easy to forget, all of the teachers agree that the most memorable part of the evening was seeing a group of year 9 nine boys with their thumbs in their ears and their hands over their eyes, at certain points in the performance, in order to prevent them from seeing or hearing the terrifying tale of “The Woman in Black”.

GCSE Drama Trips and Workshops Our students have been very busy recently, studying both in and out of class as part of their GCSE in Drama. Firstly our Year 10 students went out on a glorious sunny day to the National Theatre, where they took part in an acting workshop and were given a tour of the building. This included seeing how productions in the Olivier and Lyttleton theatres are staged and a visit to the props department where they were able to handle some of the props used in NT productions. Our Year 11 students went to see a production of ‘War Horse’, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo and were delighted to see how the horses were brought to life through the use of puppetry on stage. We are now planning a trip to see ‘Blood Brothers’ with Year 11 very soon and Year 10 will see ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’.

Nicole Gershtein 9WA As a part of the British Gymnastics National Team – otherwise know at Team GB, I was selected to participate in the Bulgarian Danube Pearl Trial/Friendly competition. Before the event, three other rhythmic gymnasts and I trained 29 hours per week to make our routines nearly flawless. As a junior, I had to compete with ribbon, clubs, hoop and ball. However, Espoirs competed with hoop, ball, free and rope.

During the competition I had a chance to meet some of the strongest and most successful gymnasts from countries like: Russia, Bulgaria, Italy and Ukraine. This helped me gain experience in what I do and taught me how to focus on my work and help me train better. After the competition, the gymnasts from my club and I were invited to train with the Bulgarian national squad. We trained for 9 hours a day with one hour break; it was a great experience which I will never forget. The training was hard and had strict rules which you had to obey, but at the end of the day all of the hard work paid off and not that long ago I had another competition where I finished in the top three with 2 gold medals. Throughout the journey I made lots of friends which I hope to meet in my next International competition.

England Women Cricketers Visit

Badminton The Centre Parks National Schools Badminton tournament was held at Hornchurch Sports Centre with 9 teams from 7 schools taking part in the Year 7/8/9 competition and 10 Teams from 8 schools in the Year 10/11 competition. Hall Mead had two teams in the junior comp. Both teams came second in their leagues and then had to play each other in the same league with Campion. The ‘A’ team (Tom Singh, Ben Calder, Oliver White and Will Singh) finished in 4th place and the ‘B’ team (Krishna Sharma, Aaron Thour, Aaron Williams and Samraj Kambo) took 6th. The Senior team (Hashum Sum, Keenan Ngo, Oliver Cole and Alex Lane) had a very unlucky day losing several games 14-15 and hence having to play off for 7/8th position against Bowyer Park which they did successfully to finish 7th.

The girls had played the day before, the younger team won through to the semi-finals in the junior competition with the game score at 2-2 it was down to the deciding doubles game. Francis Bardsley just edged it winning 15-13 resulting with us finishing in a very creditable 4th place overall. Well done to Gemma Stubbles , Charlotte Reidie, Anya Smyth and Amy Sexton. The senior girls were out classed by much stronger teams and unfortunately finished bottom of their group and then lost again in the first round of the plate competition. Well done to Narmina, Neida, Lydia and Leonie for representing the Academy.

Lydia Greenaway and Bethany Morgan from the England Women’s Cricket squad visited us for two hours giving a session on fielding which was both informative and inspiring. Groups of girls and boys from years 7,8 and 9 asked questions on their cricketing lives, how they began playing and their training regimes. The women were very complimentary about the student’s ability. Beth Langston, a former pupil now studying at Loughborough University, also accompanied them being an England academy player. She has recently been called into the full squad in a game v Pakistan. Well done Beth!

Amy Marren

This summer saw our paralympion pupil Amy Marren compete in the IPC World Swimming Championships in Montreal, Canada. Following her success in the Paralympics Amy went on to claim 4 golds and 2 silver medals at this event.

Amy now holds 8 British records, 2 European, and was part of the team that took the World Record relay this summer.

Amy has also just travelled to Brazil to compete in the Brazilian school games ahead of Rio 2016.

Amy has been nominated for various awards this year, including Sunday Times young sportswoman of the year, Young Sports personality of the Year award and she will be attending (with Mr London) the Sports Journalists Awards in London.

To celebrate the European Day of Languages in September, the MFL department sold croissants in the foyer. Mr London was there to lend a hand and speak a bit of ‘français’. In addition to this, a number of staff took their registers in a foreign language and did a number of creative things to promote the importance of languages.

Erin swims outside of school hours.

She trains every day and on a Monday she swims before her early morning Spanish lesson, which she is always on time for. She is committed to her studies and is regularly involved in extra curricular clubs like sport and PE. She has taken part in the cyber mentoring programme too.

Her teachers often comment on how hard working she is, perhaps without realising how much she also does outside school.

Max has been a loyal supporter of the Youth Panel ever since he came to the school. He has promoted the work of this group at each Freshers Fayre and regularly attended all meetings as well as being responsible for putting out the agenda. Max has also been a very active member and for the last two years Chair of Hall Mead Student Voice. He has worked hard to represent student views across all year groups.

Brandon has been a School Librarian since Year 7 and has maintained his commitment through to Year 10.

He is reliable, professional and very competent in his role, even training junior librarians. Without his help at break and lunch times we would need to restrict the number of pupils benefitting from the library and its resources. It is very rare to see an individual show such dedication especially during their free time.

Reward Adventure Weekend 2013 – Windmill Hill During the bank holiday weekend at the beginning of May this year over 60 pupils from Years 7-10, clad in their very stylish black and pink t-shirts, accompanied Mr Lewis and staff to Windmill Hill in Surrey, for the 2013 Reward Adventure Weekend. Pupils were only eligible to attend the trip if they fulfilled at least 2 out of 3 of the following criteria: above 95% attendance, good effort and/or representing the school or house in a sports or drama/music event. It was a brilliant weekend for all involved! Pupils took part in a wide range of activities: Abseiling, BMX-ing, Rifle-Shooting, Zip-Wire, Trapeze Jump, Raft-building and loads more! In May 2014 we are visiting Marchants Hill in Surrey for this annual trip. We already have over 50 pupils from Year 8-10 signed up and Year 7 will be offered the trip in December if they meet the criteria!

We were delighted to hear that Jordan Stringer, an ex Hall Mead Student has received a Jack Petchey Award for services to his local community.

Emma Evans This year I competed at the Word Karate Championships in Italy. I fought in two rounds of the 14-15 Yrs girls’ category. The first fight was against Italy and the second against Russia in the final. It was a tough fight but I was victorious and became the World Champion!
