Foreword Hello! My name is Hallie Schuld and I am currently a graduate student at Kent State University. I’m working on earning my Master of Architecture degree, and have already obtained a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from Kent State. Ocularity roosevelt island, new york • office space • 135,580 sqf • joseph ferut • spring 2019 • 4th year • credit joshua myers The interactive office space for Cornell Tech’s new campus evolved from three main driving forces: optics, environment, and programming. The formation of the building is based on two views with an active periphery. The maximization and control of daylight occurs through vertical apertures, and passive strategies are used to complement the building form. Placement of peripheral collaboration zones around centralized workspaces and programming a fabrication space (which is usually an ill-defined element of architecture) activate the building’s spaces.

Mediascape streetsboro, ohio • landscape • 20,000 sqf • majeda alhinai • fall 2017 • 3rd year Scattered throughout a textured landscape, interactive media forms are used to display artwork, host performances, and play music. Volume within media forms was most often expressed through overhead space, while mass was used to delineate and construct space loosely. Two-dimensional textures begin to become three-dimensional when applied to elements that are not flat. Color was used to emphasize the connections and visual and physical relationships between elements within the landscape.

Glitched streetsboro, ohio • library • 7,465 sqf • majeda alhinai • fall 2017 • 3rd year This media library is located next to the Mediascape, and adopts some of the same graphic characteristics as the landscape. As if in a procession, series of volumes link together, with some overtaking others and making them adapt to the dominant volume. The exterior does not give away what is happening on the interior, as it is impossible to tell which of the volumes overtakes which.

While still cohesive and recognizable as a complete composition, the volumes can be read separately due to the differences in texture application.

Soft-wear kent, ohio • photography • jon yoder • spring 2020 • graduate Beginning with a critique on the desire to produce architecture that materially mimics or blends in with its context, here instead the building is positioned as subject. The CAED’s brick façade is an attempt to relate to the surrounding university buildings, but by abstracting the material and massing, the building is able to present itself as a fully formed subject. The corners have been rounded and the roof has adopted its own formal language. The resulting model reads more fully as an independent furry subject, rather than a fur clad building. Photographic techniques were used to create three final iterations of images.

Apple Park III cleveland, ohio • urban masterplan • 0.14 sq mi • taraneh meshkani • fall 2019 • graduate • credit allison mcclure On this private peninsula, the introduction of a spine creates opportunities to engage with the public through flexible spaces. This created a hierarchy of program types ranging from completely public, to employee + public, and completely private for employees. The site located along the Cuyahoga River provides security for the campus, while still being within proximity to downtown Cleveland. The east and west banks of the Flats are now connected through a new pedestrian bridge that links the public to Apple’s new campus. Mobile typologies move along the spine and through the campus, as well as out to the city when needed and/or scheduled.

Arrangeable Devices cleveland, ohio • office space • 30,000 sqf • taraneh meshkani • fall 2019 • graduate • credit allison mcclure For Apple’s new workspace, flexibility manifests in four ways. A flexible mesh skin wraps around the exterior of the building and illustrates interior motion. Mobile units from the urban proposal enter the building via a ramp that wraps between the double facade system. An operable panel facade allows the mobile units to enter the interior of the building to introduce new programs into both the public areas and the private workspaces. Movable interior workspaces move along the structure of the building either vertically or horizontally, creating numerous arrangements depending on the needs of the employees. Three proposed arrangements have been devised for this flexible office building.
