VOTE FOR KELLY HOFFNER (R)

Advanced Voting: April 29 - May 17 | Final Voting: May 21

Kelly Hoffner, Effingham County’s Tax Commissioner Candidate, Leads with Experience

In the heart of Effingham County, a dedicated woman with a vision stands poised to transform the role of Tax Commissioner. With a fervent commitment to community service, Kelly Hoffner (R) brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the forefront of local politics.

Formerly a supervisor of the Effingham County Tax Office, Kelly left to ready herself for the upcoming election. (From Kelly’s exit interview at the Effingham County Tax Office, “Kelly is an excellent employee. She is self motivated, a quick learner and gets along well with other co-workers. I wish her well in future endeavors. She will be missed.”) She understands the intricacies and challenges of the system from the ground up. Her leadership and experience within the office have honed her abilities to navigate its complexities and identify areas for improvement. Kelly’s platform is centered on four pillars: accountability, transparency, communication, and customer service.

Prompt and Accurate Billing: Recognizing the frustration and confusion that can arise from billing discrepancies, Kelly pledges to implement rigorous systems and checks to streamline the billing process. Using advanced technologies and continuous staff training, she aims to minimize errors and maximize efficiency, providing taxpayers with the clarity and reliability they deserve.

Community Education and Communication: An informed community is an empowered one, and Kelly pledges to establish initiatives that educate taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities. Military veterans, among other groups, may have a lack of understanding regarding tax breaks they are entitled to.By fostering open lines of communication through town hall meetings, informative newsletters, and online platforms such as a new departmental facebook page,Kelly wants to bridge the gap between the tax office and the community it serves.

Rebuilding Relationships: Kelly recognizes the importance of strong relationships with local departments, including the Tax Assessor’s Office and other government entities. Through collaborative efforts and a spirit of mutual respect, she aims to rebuild and strengthen these vital connections, fostering a culture of cooperation and synergy that benefits all stakeholders.Working hand in hand with other departments, Kelly believes that Effingham County can achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness in serving its residents.

Growth and Development: Effingham County is experiencing rapid growth and development, and Kelly is committed to ensuring that the tax office embraces

innovation and modernization by implementing cuttingedge technologies and best practices that improve service delivery and enhance taxpayer satisfaction. Strategic planning and forward-thinking initiatives will position Effingham County’s tax office as a model of excellence in the region.

Accessibility for All: To ensure better accessibility for senior citizens and those with mobility challenges. Kelly pledges to implement measures that make it easier for all to access tax services. Through community outreach, expanded online services, and dedicated support staff, Kelly is committed to ensuring that every taxpayer, regardless of age or ability, receives the assistance and support they need.

With a steadfast commitment to accountability, transparency, communication, and customer service, Kelly offers a compelling vision for the future of the tax office— one that is inclusive, responsive, and dedicated to serving the needs of all residents. Effingham residents can choose a leader who will uphold the values of the community and lead it towards a brighter tomorrow.

You may not know what any of these terms mean but there is someone who does—licensed insurance agent and health care broker Melissa McBride Stille. With over 15 years in the health insurance industry, she is your best ally in obtaining health insurance that works best for you and your family.

“There is a lot of information out there and it can be confusing,” says Melissa. “As your local agent, together, we can look at your needs and simplify the process of signing up for health insurance.”

Because she is local, Melissa has a true understanding of her community. And being local means she can get to know you and be available for face-to-face interactions. You can meet in person, get answers via text, send her an email that gets answered quicklywhatever works for you. Try doing that at a big company with an 800 number! You never have to yell “Customer Service” into the phone because the person who picks it up is Melissa!

Melissa now has two office locations to better serve her clients. “I am opening up a second location on Laurel St, the main street that runs through Springfield, which will be my second office in Effingham County. My Rincon office is inside of DeWitt Insurance Agency, which is where I originally purchased the health insurance department to become owner of my own agency.” says Melissa. Both locations are by appointment only at this time. “Once both offices are fully operational, I will be at the new Springfield location on designated days and at the Rincon office on others, in addition to working from home.”

Health insurance is both vitally important and complex. As your agent, Melissa will explain the basic components of health insurance such as premiums, deductibles, policy limits, exclusions etc. All of these greatly impact both your care and the cost.

As your agent, Melissa:

• takes the time to understand your needs.

• Works with you directly, one on one.

• Provides services free of charge to you.

• Provides personalized recommendations.

• Help you enroll in qualified health programs.

• Reviews your health plan annually.

When comparing plans, even with the same insurance company, there is a lot to consider such as deductibles, premiums, provider networks, and the difference between HMOs and PPOs. Another important issue is prescription coverage, which varies widely from plan to plan. Melissa states, “I know many clients are understandably concerned with cost but the best insurance for you is not necessarily the cheapest. When we look at plans together, we will consider all the costs related to the insurance, as well as what you are actually getting for your money.”

Melissa says it is important to prepare ahead of time for any life changes that affect your health insurance, such as retirement. “Don’t wait to start! You need to prepare three months in advance for life/insurance changes. Contact me and we can go over the timeline, so you are ready at the right time.” The same goes for open marketplace deadlines- call Melissa and get on track in advance.

Melissa gives every client her cell number - it is even in all of her advertising so that everyone, even future clients, can feel comfortable reaching out to her. She lives locally, now with two offices in Effingham County, but for the quickest response give her a call on her cell 912-239-7119.

“Being an independent health insurance broker means I work for you- the client. I look forward to getting your call and helping you determine your best health care options.”

PUBLISHER’S THOUGHTS

Women in Business

Our annual Women in Business issue is always one of my favorites. As an entrepreneur myself, I can relate with the stories of driven women who are dedicated to achieving their goals while serving their communities.

We just love the story about the collaboration of several Effingham business owners and residents who came together in New York City of New York Fashion Week. Judiann Echezabal, our local celebrity designer, iHeart Dental dentist Dr. Misty Seale and her husband from K&R Studios set the city on fire with an artful show and amazing photography. This is a testament to what can happen when you combine passions with collaboration. Read more on 12.

Effingham Magazine is proudly produced by:

135 Goshen Rd Ext., Suite 251, Rincon, GA 31326 (912) 295-5406

EffinghamMagazine.com

Also in this issue, we share the story of Scott and Gayle Miller. A fun and creative couple who left the northeast for a new and vibrant life in Rincon. We are certain you will enjoy getting to know them.

And finally, this wouldn’t be a Women in Business issue without the pages dedicated to the nominated women in our community. Each of the women on pages 44-47 were selected by our readers as women to know. We really enjoyed putting these pages together and getting their advice.

We hope you find inspiration in the pages of this issue to go after your dreams, whether it’s entrepreneurship, collaborating with others or finding a way you can serve your community in an impactful way.

Adrenaline pumping, a last minute stitch & fluff, take a deep breath—and it’s showtime! Nothing is quite like the famed New York Fashion Week (NYFW) held, of course, in the very heart of Manhattan. With 97 brands showing, the NYFW schedule is packed full of shows by designers Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors and now Effingham’s very own Judiann Echezabal, of Judiann’s Fashion Design Studio.

Local Residents & Business Owners Come Together in a Fashionable Collaboration

The press, the public, store buyers, influencers, and celebrities were all there to view the very latest in international fashion collections and haute couture.

For fashion designer Judiann, it was “an unbelievable week.” Her show featured 20 of her original designs that were walked down the runway at Sony Hall, off of Times Square in a production produced by Runway 7.

“It was a really good show,” she says, despite the time crunch. “We worked on it for four months, when it should have taken six.”

Judiann credits her Georgia studio staff with meeting the show deadline and executing her designs perfectly. “I haven't done a runaway in a long time. Once I opened my studio in Springfield, it freed me up with time and I wanted to get my designs out there.” And the hometown folks were with her all the way. “I had a lot of people from Effingham with me. It was a fantastic crew,” Judiann says, “We worked as a team, and everything came together.”

Erich Perez (Kronos Media Productions, K&R Studios) was there in his capacity as Judiann’s Fashion Design Studio official photographer. “NYFW is unbelievable,” he said, “I was expecting it to be busy, but this was crazy. There were lines two blocks long of people waiting to get into the runway shows. The whole experience was both awesome and intense.”

www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | April/May 2024 13

His wife Dr. Misty Seale aka DJ Orchid (The Real DJ Orchid) also came to NY to provide music and model clothes from the collection for photo shoots by Erich at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park.

“Erich’s photos are fabulous,” says Judiann, “and Misty wore my clothes beautifully.”

Erich says, “I loved shooting at the city’s iconic places like the Met and the park.” He says he and Judiann share a style sensibility. “We are both big on art and we mesh together very well artistically and creatively.”

House model Clair Nease from Effingham County was there to walk the runway for Judiann’s show which she did with cool grace and aplomb. She was an instant success, something that can actually happen at NYFW. “Once Clair showed up in New York everyone wanted her to walk for them,” says Judiann. “She went to casting calls with over three thousand people and she ended up walking for ten additional shows. That is phenomenal. She has a big future ahead of her.”

Studio Assistant Ashley Sanders—“who had a hand in everything we did,”—Tanner Maxey,

she relocated from Florida to Connecticut and started designing small collections of luxury fashions and wedding gowns.

She has also been a college level Fashion Design Professor with many years of experience teaching at Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, Columbia University and Long Island University.

In addition to design and teaching, Judiann is the author of Modern Sewing Techniques: For Inspiration and Motivation to Bring Your Ideas to Life Through the Art of Fashion (BVT Publishing, 2016). She continues to teach master classes online for Parsons as well as an institution in China.

Springfield Studio

When her husband’s business took the family to Savannah, Judiann was able to transfer her design business to a new studio in Springfield. She opened Judiann’s Fashion Design Studios in 2022. “It’s a tradeoff” she says, “New York has all the fabric shops but this great space and the wonderful people I work with would not be possible in New York.”

I had a lot of people from Effingham with me. It was a fantastic crew—we worked as a team, and everything came together.” “ “

from the Georgia studio, Sophie Ferrin, who provided the handiwork on the crystal shoes among other brilliant items, and Judiann’s daughter Laura Marie, who helped out immensely, were all there working around the clock to make the show a success. Even with all the hands, “Fashion Week was exhausting. We were busy every minute and didn’t have five minutes of downtime.” But they did everything together and ultimately “everyone had a really good time.”

The real story is in the clothing. A quick look at these gorgeous garments and you will notice the perfect beading, the rich textiles, the overall sensuous shape and sophistication. There is luxury and playfulness, elegance and originality in every design. It's obvious why the show was a resounding success.

Multifaceted Designer

Judiann studied fashion in Miami, where she received a degree in Fashion Design and Business and an MBA in business management. By her junior year in college, Judiann had begun American Baby, a children’s wear business, in Florida. Very quickly her company went from three to 20 employees.

“We made everything to order, and it was all sewn in-house and nothing was sent overseas,” she says. The business took off and she sold her line at Saks and Bellini Baby for years. After Hurricane Andrew wiped out her business,

The space is in a refurbished railyard building and has a city loft look and feel which works well with her designs. Most of Judiann's time in the studio is spent creating customers' orders and her own collections. Currently Judiann and her studio crew are working on Bridal/ Pageant/Evening/Gala wear.

She creates clothing for real people, not necessarily model sized. “We can design for anybody” she says. And it’s not just dresses. Judiann says, “I do jumpsuits, lace pants suits, and creative wedding wear, which can be shorts and tops, using luxury fabrics and handwork.” It’s special occasion clothing created specifically for the client.

Many of the designs in the studio, and the fashion show, are very labor intensive. She says, “The White Rose wedding gown took a whole team to create because every bead was hand embroidered, and the flowers and headpiece were made by hand. Everything we do is from scratch,” she says. And that takes time and expertise because, “I do love glamor.”

New York Fashion Week is held again in September and Judiann is contemplating a return trip to NY for another runway show with all new designs. “I love what I do. I can’t stop. It’s all I ever want to do.” She says she feels very fortunate. “I am excited to come to work every day,” she says. ■

UNITED WAY OF THE COASTAL EMPIRE’S WOMEN WHO RULE EVENT FEATURES WOMAN OF THE YEAR CAROL BELL AND DYNAMIC PANELISTS

United Way of the Coastal Empire is proud to announce that this year’s Women Who Rule event—presented by Step One Automotive Group—honored community leader and United Way supporter Carol Bell as the 2024 United Way “Woman of the Year.”

The annual luncheon—chaired this year by Diana Morrison of Ad Specialty—was held Tuesday, March 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Savannah Convention Center.

Championed by United Way’s WOMEN UNITED®, this popular annual event raises funds for the Women United Transportation Fund, which supports residents across our region who need dependable transportation.

“Each year, an average of 2,000 women and caregivers in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties receive support in the form of gas cards, bus passes, and even minor car repairs thanks to this effort,” said Diana Morrison, Women Who Rule Chair. “More than 30 women have volunteered their time and talents for the 2024 Women Who Rule Committee, and I am thankful for every one of them!”

Carol Bell: Woman of the Year

Carol Bell, a Savannah trailblazer, as honored for her long history of dedicated service to United Way as she was the first African American board chair in 1998 and has continued to give, advocate, and volunteer to support the organization ever since.

Carol’s extensive community involvement spans leadership roles in various organizations, including the Governor’s Children and Youth Coordinating Council, the United Negro College Fund’s telethon, and esteemed groups like Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Links, Savannah Chapter. The Woman of the Year award was presented by SERVPRO of Savannah.

THE ART OF REAL ESTATE

Adrian Webber, Realty Companies

Smart development strengthens communities, bolsters local economies, and helps families thrive. As much as we celebrate our past it’s true that every historical house was once new, every quaint glassblower or blacksmith was once cutting edge.

Growth is the history of America and because it is inevitable, it’s vital that people with a shared love of the region shepherd their communities thoughtfully into their next chapter. An artistic vision is as important to this process as a hammer and nails.

Adrian Webber, Savannah Market Director of Realty Companies, has that artist’s vision. After graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2002 with a degree in Graphic Design, Adrian became the fourth generation of her family to join the real estate business. She says, “As an artist, I bring a creative edge to the market with an out the box approach, whether transforming a space, a tract of land or an old building, it's about bringing life to space that otherwise didn’t exist.”

Realty Companies is owned and operated by Adrian’s father, Shawn Leveto, and brother, Alex Leveto. They primarily sell land and commercial buildings, securing land and specializing in offmarket opportunities for commercial development in Savannah, Effingham County, and surrounding areas.

“We are honored to be involved with development transactions that affect people's everyday lives. We admire our communities for their resilience and willingness to embrace the future and we take our role in that very seriously." says Adrian.

Springfield’s Railyard

A revitalized downtown Springfield features in that role. “We are very proud of our new office,” says Adrian, “It is the perfect space for both loves, real estate and art.”

The office is located in The Railyard, a renovated historic building on Laurel Street, downtown Springfield. Owned and operated by Ricky and Ivy Eilerman, the 4,000 square foot building is home to several businesses.

Adrian says, “The Railyard is full circle for us. We had a vision for building an office space and the completed buildout has complimented the space beautifully by incorporating the historical aspects with innovative design.”

They currently have five agents in the office and are seeking to add two more.

Realty Companies shares a common area with the 13 Stars, an inhouse event venue, enabling them to collaborate with the First Friday events held on Laurel Street the first Friday of every month, as well as other fun happenings. The office features local artists’ work, currently photographer Bobby Fitzmayer has his photos on display.

Because she loves the city and is invested in seeing it grow, Adrian is now a Board Member of the Springfield Downtown Development Authority, which actively pursues economic opportunities for the city.

Abundant Growth

“Smart development has the potential to have a profound generational impact on our community,” Adrian said. “Creating communities, ensuring that our children, and our grandchildren,

are safely positioned to reap the benefits of today’s growth is who we are.” Adrian says, “Co-creation is where the magic happens. We bring deals to other agents and welcome working with other brokerage firms. At the end of the day there are always two sides at the closing table."

She says the paradox of the small town is that there is actually room for all.

“We can all succeed together. Other people’s success inspires us. Our office is collectively looking to grow our community by listing properties that will suit both local and national businesses as well as commercial and residential development entities.”

It wasn’t long ago that this level of interest in the area was unheard of, and so while it is important to plan carefully, it is equally important to welcome smart growth and overcome the inevitable roadblocks. “Developments take time, and there can be frustrating delays,” says Adrian, “but the rewards will be felt for many years to come.”

Past into Present

Adrian and her family love spending time in downtown Springfield, enjoying the events and the revitalized businesses. “If we are out, we are either in Springfield or down at our property on Ebenezer Creek,” she says. “It’s an idyllic location for our future family retreat.”

She says, “I will always be an artist and although my work today is differently creative it allows me to open up opportunities for others. Facilitating our clients’ vision and influencing our community is the ultimate act of creativity. I am proud to have a role in producing thriving local economies.”

AUGUST SHEAROUSE, COMMUNITY BANKER

The Bank of Newington welcomes you and your business. They are a “True Community Bank” led by four generations of family bankers, as well as a superb staff who share the same goals and vision—providing outstanding customer service and satisfaction.

Effingham Market President August Shearouse says, “We know our customers and we appreciate each and every one.”

Born and raised in Effingham County, August has been at the Springfield branch of the Bank of Newington for the last five years. After graduating from Georgia Southern with a bachelor's degree in accounting, August started her career in banking as a teller. “I fell in love with it. It was a trial by fire at the drive thru, but I loved working with the customers.”

Her position as Effingham Market President is similar to a branch manager, “It’s totally hands on every day, I manage the staff and work with customers on their loan and deposit needs.”

She says what makes Bank of Newington special is “knowing and building relationships with our customers. We help people we actually see in our bank. Our decisions are all made locally. Ultimately, this benefits our communities.”

The bank does a lot of construction and real estate lending and if need be, “I will literally pick up and drive twenty minutes to talk to people face to face.”

She wants customers “to remember their experience at the Bank of Newington fondly, not that it was difficult. They may not remember the details, but they will remember we helped them. The bottom line is if they need help, they will get it.”

Being a hometown banker is important to August. “I love the fact that I have been here my entire life. Whenever I go out, I will know someone. If I am at the grocery store, I will stop and talk to folks at least three times. Effingham county still has a true sense of community.” August and her husband Brandon have “always loved the area and couldn't imagine raising our two boys anywhere else.”

Bank of Newington currently has three branches, and they are laying the groundwork for a fourth branch, with an anticipated opening in Rincon in January 2025. “We want you to be here,” says August, “Bank of Newington is built on being a neighborhood bank and community resource.”

APRIL CAMERON: CEO of the Port Wentworth Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center

30 April/May 2024 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com

Port Wentworth is experiencing an era of positive change and growth led by dedicated professionals who are committed to making Chatham County’s most northern city a great environment for businesses, residents and visitors.

Women in leadership positions are positively impacting Port Wentworth not only in business, but also as elected officials, city employees and notably in leading the area’s Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center.

Last fall, this organization appointed April Cameron as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer. The Chamber serves small businesses and large corporations and is the primary tourism and economic development organization for Port Wentworth. April is supported by long serving Business Development Coordinator Janice Cantrell.

April began her career working in advertising and publishing in Atlanta’s Gwinnett County. Relocating to Anderson County in South Carolina, she joined the nonprofit sector in 2011, working for Meals

a specific community (Gwinnett County and Anderson County) and the businesses and residents in that area. The nonprofit organizations where I’ve worked have focused on bettering the lives of those within the community in which I lived. So, working with the Chamber of Commerce, an organization that focuses on the Port Wentworth community, comes naturally to me. I believe it is our responsibility as citizens to make our own communities better in the ways we can.”

April attended Georgia Southern University in Statesboro where she completed an undergraduate Communication Arts degree and where her passion for volunteering was born.

“As a communications major at Georgia Southern University, we were required to do an internship. I ended up at the National Kidney Foundation in Atlanta. It was a nonprofit organization, and we held several events that required the help of volunteers. People came from all walks of life to help with whatever was needed. With a relatively small staff, I saw first-hand how important it was to

on Wheels in community relations. Her experience in fundraising, promotional initiatives and special events led her to become Director of Strategic Markets at United Way of Anderson County.

In 2018, April became the Executive Director of the Anderson Arts Center where she led operations and provided the vision for this 33,000 sq. ft. memberdriven arts center with three galleries, two classrooms and a pottery studio. Her vision and leadership have ensured the development of highly talented teams and a collaborative workplace. During her years in Anderson County, April founded, published and edited a bi-monthly community magazine, Anderson Magazine from the ground up, working closely with the local Chamber of Commerce and many community leaders and members.

April explains why her career has prepared her so well for leading the Chamber, “The jobs I’ve held throughout my career have all been community focused. Each magazine was focused on

have ‘do-ers’ on your team—people who gladly helped and expected nothing in return—people who were there because of something they believed in. After that, I felt that giving back was just something you were supposed to do,” April explains.

“Throughout my career, I’ve been involved in civic organizations like the Junior League, Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club, where an emphasis was placed on hands-on volunteering. I’ve been able to give my time to some great organizations that do such important work. I’ve helped to build Habitat for Humanity houses, served meals to those experiencing homelessness, packed weekend meal kits for children with food insecurity. Taking the time to be involved with others in different situations than oneself is eyeopening, teaches empathy, and I just believe it’s the right thing to do.”

She is a Coastal Empire native, raised in Metter, Georgia, and is looking forward to reconnecting with friends and spending time with family in the area.

“I am so excited to be back in an area that feels like home. I’ve lived away from the southern part of Georgia since 1994, and while I’ve had a wonderful life and fantastic experiences, there’s no place like home! I’m closer to my extended family, my sister lives in Statesboro, I have college and high school friends that I can see much more frequently. And, as much as it feels like home, it has changed so much that I also feel like I am on a new adventure. I am looking forward to exploring all the places and things that have changed and been added over the years.”

according to April. “I have a daughter, Avery, who is a junior at the University of Georgia majoring in Broadcast Journalism and we have a tailgate spot at Tailgate Station in Athens, where we spend most of our Saturdays in the fall,” April explains. Her son, Cooper, is a senior in high school and is currently contemplating which college he wants to attend later this year.

Working and living in Port Wentworth has been a very positive experience for April. “Besides the people I’ve met who have all been very kind and friendly, I

seen, there is a lot of community pride in Port Wentworth and that makes it feel very warm and welcoming.”

April really enjoys live music and is excited about all the opportunities to experience that in this area.

Spending time with family and friends helps to balance her work and life,

“He plays sports so I spend a lot of time cheering him on from the stands,” said April.

Another way that this busy Executive Director spends her downtime is trying new restaurants—from super casual to high end, and she also enjoys attending wine tastings and visiting wineries to experience new varietals. ■

JAMIE PRATT & PATRIOT PROS ROOFING: Uncompromising on Quality and Integrity

When Jamie Pratt founded Patriot Pros Roofing in 2020 together with her husband Matthew, there were two values they knew they would never compromise—quality and integrity.

After several years of working for other roofing companies, they knew they wanted to do things differently. They took a leap of faith and went out on their own. They designed their company logo, had it installed on their trucks and yard signs for job sites and started gaining business through word of mouth. “Working for ourselves is much better,” Jamie says.

They vowed not to sell customers a product they didn’t need and to respect the hard work of their crew by paying promptly and in full. By operating their own company from start to finish, they are able to do work that they believe in.

Patriot Pros Roofing Services

In addition to expert roofing services, Patriot Pros Roofing offers siding, windows, doors, gutters and fencing services as well. This allows the team to give their attention to detail and quality to their customers’ other home renovation needs, and offers homeowners one source to call whenever they have a project that needs to be done.

Patriot Pros is licensed and insured in both Georgia and South Carolina and is a proud member of the Georgia Roofing Contractors Association.

A Woman of Many Skills

While Jamie has prior experience in law enforcement, property management, medical and accounting, she has done construction her whole life. Having put herself through college, she now handles the day-to-day operations of Patriot Pros Roofing. She assists the homeowner through the insurance process and is the project manager start to finish. She physically inspects all roofs, gets the materials needed to complete the job, and she gives the homeowner piece of mind while the project is under way.

Projects from drywall to framing have never fazed her. She has developed a strong work ethic over the years and built her experience through on-the-job training. She’s frequently on job sites from 7 am until the work is done each day.

Thriving as a Woman in a Male-Dominated Field

It’s not always easy being a woman in a male-dominated field, but Jamie doesn’t let that bother her. “You have to have a knack for it, because it’s tough. Sometimes I get looks from people who are expecting to see a man,” Jamie says.

She’s been an influence on other women in the construction industry, and offers support wherever she can by being active in the business community. She is the President of the Downtown Professionals chapter of Business Networking International and a member of the Greater Pooler Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We all need each other to get to where we’re going,” Jamie says.

Connecting with Customers

Connecting with customers is another area where Jamie excels. Through jobs she’s worked, she has discovered serendipitous connections between people, and these connections have helped her forge relationships both personal and professional.

“When I work, I know I’m in a place for a reason. I really enjoy making customers happy,” Jamie says.

Jamie loves helping people make the right decision on their biggest investment: their homes. She keeps customers up-to-date on the status of their projects by taking before, in progress and after photos, and alerts them if they see something else that requires attention.

When Jamie isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, and boating. When the weather is nice on a weekend, you can find her and Matthew riding their motorcycles on their way to a leisurely breakfast in Savannah.

SCOTT DOUGLAS & GAIL MIHALIK Enjoying Lowcountry Life

The Savannah area is known for attracting people who appreciate good times, good food and a relaxed way of life among the live oaks and Spanish moss.

Because this area is in many ways a crossroads, new people cross our path all the time and if you are fortunate some of those people are both interesting and what we used to call “good company.” Their joy in life, in finding new experiences, seeing the best in others, and in the world, make them a pleasure to be around. Sometimes you meet people who just make you feel good. Scott Douglas and Gail Mihalik are two such people.

Originally from Connecticut and Pennsylvania the couple exude a zest for life and an aptitude for adaptability.

“We left the north and came here because you don’t have to shovel sunshine!” laughs Scott.

Gail says. “We originally looked at Hilton Head but when I expanded our

search we discovered Rincon. We found a beautiful home here and love it.”

They have been here for three years and cite good neighbors and their proximity to both the rural countryside and Savannah city life as the best features of living in Rincon.

Beginnings

Scott started out in the South—born in Biloxi, Mississippi—but eventually his family landed in Connecticut in the same town as Gail.

“We grew up together,” he says, “We had all the same classes in grade school, and ended up going to all the same schools through high school.” Gail says young Scott “was a redhead with freckles and when I first saw him I thought ‘he’s cute!’”

The couple dated in high school but when it was time for college they went their separate ways. They married other people, had families and careers.

Then seven years ago, Scott found someone he thought might be Gail on Facebook. He sent her a private message,

“Are you Dutch?”—which was a private nickname known only to family and close friends. She didn’t see the message for an entire year but responded in the affirmative as soon as she did. One thing led to another and they have been together since, living in Pennsylvania, and even attending their fifty year class reunion together. But they were ready for warmer weather, so making the move to Georgia became a top priority.

Culinary Adventures

Once they settled into their new life in Rincon, the couple looked around for opportunities to use their respective skill sets.

Gail’s extensive background in the restaurant business helped her to create a new path as a Food Tour Guide/ Experience Coordinator with The Savannah Taste Experience, where she conducts curated food experience tours.

“This is absolutely the funnest job I could possibly have!” she says. “I am able to draw on my 50 years in the hospitality

industry, which runs the gamut from dishwasher to restaurant owner, and conduct a memorable food tour experience for our guests.”

She says it was a step out of her comfort zone: “Personally I am shy, but I have met so many new people and we get to talk about food so it has been a very enjoyable experience.”

Although the tour also includes some aspects of local history, Gail says, “I am not drilling dates and generals in your head! Instead, the history part is about how it pertains to knowledge of Southern food and the items we taste, as well as the history for some of the downtown squares, the buildings around them, who created them and why.”

She adds that there are also fun twists on the folklore of Savannah and some of the ghostly antics. “It really can’t be a Savannah tour without that!” she says. “We do multiple tastings. Who wouldn’t love a day that included pork belly, sausage rolls, crab soup, empanadas and mojitos, local honey and charcuterie boards?”

She also keeps her hand in the culinary arts by offering private catering. “Cooking is an escape for me, an opportunity to be ‘in my own world,’” she says, “and it’s been very interesting for me to learn a whole new cuisine. Southern food utilizes different spices, different cooking methods, and has a different history. It is all fascinating.”

Radio Days

down the story, writing the scripting, creating their newscasts and getting it on the air—sometimes in less time than it takes to read a news article!

As a Public Service Director, he helped local charities get the word out about their events and service projects and as a News Director he had the responsibility to keep his community informed. “Radio was a connector to the community,” he says.

And when he’s not creating a radio broadcast, he can be found pursuing his other avocation—flower delivery at New Life Flower and Gifts.

Scott says, “It was something I had done before and really enjoyed. I love delivering flowers.” Don’t be surprised if you see Scott on your doorstep with a beautiful bouquet!

Instrument Appreciation

In their home you will find a collection of around a dozen stringed instruments. “The reason for the interest is not only the musical aspect but the artwork they represent,” says Scott, “the styles, colors and natural wood grain texture make them interesting in multiple ways.”

“We left the north and came here because you don’t have to shovel sunshine! ”

Scott had a career in radio that spanned more than four decades and continues today. He has been a professional radio personality and news announcer for wellknown stations in the northeast, primarily in Chambersburg, PA. Radio can be like a friend to the listener, and it takes a very special talent to remain on the air, with a fan base that sticks with you for many years. It’s much like being part of the listener’s family. It’s a bond, and it’s a position of trust. Scott was one of those radio men who was able to create that relationship with his audience. He comes from the era when radio professionals did it all, from hunting

In addition to hosting and producing the morning radio program on WCHAAM, Scott also produced a weekly two-hour Contemporary Christian music program on WIKZ.

He says, “For me, Real Live Over the Air AM/FM Radio has always been about serving the community, the people who listen. Entertainment, including music, is important but keeping the listener informed is also important.”

The technology evolved dramatically over the years, but he says, “After transitioning from playing records, to digital computer automation as a DJ, to a News Announcer I was able to bring with me the ability to inform in a more entertaining and conversational way.”

Today he is still very active in radio, working remotely researching, writing and recording a morning newscast, Monday through Friday, for WRGG in Greencastle, PA.

Some of the unusual stringed instruments in Scott’s collection includes a Mandolin Guitar Harp, generically called a Zither—an instrument that originated in Bavaria and Austria. There is also a Ukelin, “which is described as a Frankenstein instrument being a combination of the Hawaiian ukulele and the violin,” he says.

Another unusual one is the Autoharp, which is based on the Zither. As a collector and fan of finely made instruments Scott says it is exciting to live where the world famous Gretsch guitars and drums are made.

Exploring

In between culinary gigs and radio shows the couple enjoys discovering different musical entertainment at local venues. They also spend time exploring the area, researching and visiting various historical sites. A favorite day trip includes strolling through Forsyth Park with their dogs and enjoying live music, especially Willie Jackson & the Tybee Blues Band, on River Street, downtown Savannah.

More recently they have been having fun searching out local coffee shops where they get to taste local coffee roasts. They both agree that trading in the snow shovel for year-round sunshine has been a great success, and they look forward to many years of fresh adventures in their new home. ■

Q&A with Business Women Who Make a Difference in Our Community

The National Women’s Business Council reports that women-owned businesses “contribute substantially to entrepreneurship in the United States.” 42% of all U.S. businesses are owned by women (13 million) and employ more than 9.4 million workers. Women are three percentage points more likely to start a business than men. Here we celebrate women in our community who are making a name for themselves while lifting up others in the process.

BONNIE SMITH

Owner, BRenewed

How long have you been in business?

Almost 5 years

How long in your field of expertise?

I have been a Licensed Massage Therapist for 23 years

What has been the most challenging in running your business?

What I find most challenging is preventing myself from injury. Massage Therapy is a physically demanding profession and my clients deserve to have the best version of me, so I really try to practice a healthy work/life balance by staying on top of my daily exercises of walking and running, stretching and sometimes yoga on my lunch breaks, scheduling routine massages for myself, staying properly hydrated, eating healthy and taking time off when I need to.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

I find it so rewarding to see the smiles on my clients’ faces and hearing the sighs of relief that they are finally there with me! From the moment they walk into my beautiful and cozy studios, until the moment they leave, my clients know and trust that they are in good hands and that I have nothing but the best intentions in my heart for them. I have witnessed the work of my hands help people over and over again for 23 years!

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

• Believe in yourself.

• Put in the hard work; it’s worth it in the long run! You get out of it what you put into it!

• Have a strong support system that you can trust to help make big decisions

• Get plugged into a community group that other female entrepreneurs are attending

• Work in an environment that makes you feel proud and you truly love esthetically.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

My biggest cheerleaders are my family and friends! I have to also include my clients in this as well, for without them booking ongoing appointments, referring their friends and families to me and voting and cheering me on with community contests, none of this would be possible. My dreams have come true!

STEFANIE MCCULLOUGH

President, Stop N Stor Self Storage

How long have you been in business?

Stop N Stor as a company has been in business since 2005. We opened our Highway 30 location in 2008 and our Highway 21 location in 2015.

How long in your field of expertise?

Stop N Stor is a family business, so it feels like forever, but I officially started working with my family in 2012.

What has been the most challenging in running your business?

In this season of my life, now that I am a mom with young children, the most challenging for me is balancing work and life. When you have your own business, you are essentially always working, but on the flip side you have flexibility as well. Also, a challenge is working with family. You speak more openly and matter-of-factly to family, and have to be mindful of that.

What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

The most rewarding part of running our business is really seeing the “fruits of my labor”. After I make a decision and see that it was successful, whether it resulted in more income for our business, or resulted in a better benefit to our employees, is rewarding to me.

What advice would you give other female entrepreneurs?

Have confidence and speak up. If you do not think something is right, say it. Always advocate for yourself and your business. Something else I would advise is that every mistake, failure, or mess-up, is just an opportunity to learn from. There is so much I have learned from my downfalls. So don’t beat yourself up and see a mistake as an opportunity to not have it happen a second time around.

Who are your greatest cheerleaders?

I would have to say my husband, Drew McCullough, and my father, Alan Dasher, are my biggest cheerleaders. We are partners so we are in it together. Working with family can be challenging, but a victory is sweeter with those you love right there with you!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Your Local Source to Upcycle and Recycle

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a treasure trove of furniture, appliances and household goods. Inventory changes constantly as new donations arrive and customers eager for a bargain take home some fantastic finds.

Much like other thrift stores, finding treasures at the ReStore can require multiple visits. With a convenient location on Highway 21 between Rincon and Springfield, stopping by is easy! The store is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, so Thursday mornings are the best time to scope out new arrivals. Some high demand items don’t make it to the weekend!

The ReStore is also a great source for building supplies. A consistent inventory of cabinets, laminate flooring, tile and paint provide an affordable starting point for home improvement projects.

“We are proud to be an affordable source of home furnishings and supplies,” says Kait Rapp, manager of the ReStore. “Our everchanging selection gives families the opportunity to pick up items they need for their homes priced at a fraction of the retail cost.”

Upcycling

Savvy shoppers have a keen eye for what can be repurposed, imagining a piece of furniture with a fresh coat of paint or a vibrant reupholstery job. Over the years, customers have converted suitcases into pet beds, chicken wire into sculptures and sewing machine tables into bar carts.

The ReStore frequently has a selection of refrigerators, stoves and microwaves at affordable prices, making it easy to furnish a first home or apartment or replace a non-functioning appliance in a pinch. Sometimes you can even find matching sets!

Recycling

Recycling is a way that you can help Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County. Recycling your aluminum cans with them can help further their mission of building modest and attainable homes in the community. Aluminum cans are collected in a large bin next to the ReStore and sold by the pound to a scrap metal company. The proceeds generated from these pickups go directly into the construction budget to cover building costs.

Participating in aluminum recycling also qualifies them for periodic grant funding through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity International and Novelis. “Together with other Habitat for Humanity affiliates, we recycle for good,” says Jimmy Rutland, President/CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County. “We appreciate the ongoing support of the community as we build homes, community and hope.”

Donations

If you’re giving your home a new look or downsizing, consider donating the items or supplies that you’re no longer using so they can be someone else’s treasure. Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County can pick up any large donations from your home. Schedule a pickup by calling 855-908-5040 or 912-826-6433.

THE “PERFECT LIP POUT”

Elevate Your Look From Ordinary to Extraordinary

In the world of beauty, few things captivate attention like the perfect lip pout. It’s not merely a matter of puckering lips; it’s an art form that combines technique, confidence and alluring beauty. Whether it’s for a sultry evening look or a confident daytime statement, at its essence, the perfect lip pout begins with the individual.

Defining the “perfect” lips is subjective and can vary from person to person. However, there are some common characteristics associated with attractive lips:

1. Symmetry: Symmetrical lips, where the upper and lower lips are balanced in size and shape, are often considered aesthetically pleasing. Scientific studies have found that the most ideal lip shape has an upper-to-lower lip ratio of 1:2. However, 60% of people studied now prefer a 1:1 ratio where the lips are completely symmetrical and evenly full. Celebrity influencers such as Kylie Jenner have made this trend very popular in recent times.

2. Fullness: Full lips with a plump appearance are often desirable. Lips get thinner with age, so having fuller lips gives a more youthful appearance. When it comes to attraction, big lips are better, according to the BBC. This doesn’t necessarily mean excessively large lips but rather lips that have a healthy volume and definition.

3. Defined Cupid’s Bow: The Cupid’s bow, the V-shaped curve on the upper lip, is often seen as an attractive feature when it’s well-defined and proportionate.

4. Smooth Texture: Lips don’t have sweat glands, so they tend to dry out faster than other parts of the body. Smooth,

hydrated lips free of cracks or dryness are generally considered more attractive.

5. Natural Appearance: While enhancement techniques like lip fillers are popular, they can sometimes give you the “duck lip” appearance. The “perfect” lips often have a natural appearance without looking overdone or artificial.

Dr. Seale at iHeart Dental has extensive training from the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and masters a special technique creating the most ideal beautiful lips that are indistinguishable from the rest. Using a combination of horizontal and vertical techniques while incorporating the use of dental blocks, Dr. Seale achieves the most beautiful natural looking lips that are quick and painless, offering immediate results with minimal downtime.

Overall, lip fillers are great for enhancing the natural beauty of the lips by correcting the size, shape, fullness and overall appearance of the lips. However, there may be some instances where fillers may not be enough and botox may need to be added. Such cases occur with smokers lines, gummy smiles and upside down “frowny” smiles. Dr. Seale is a skilled clinician who can evaluate your smile and confidently elevate your look from ordinary to extraordinary.

In the end, the perfect lip pout isn’t just about achieving a certain aesthetic—it’s about expressing yourself boldly and unapologetically. Whether you’re rocking a dramatic red lip or a subtle nude, wear it with pride and let your confidence be the star of the show. After all, the most beautiful thing you can wear is a smile, and the perfect lip pout is just the cherry on top.

More Than Pest Control

Darrell Dasher grew up in the Sand Hill area, so managing the Rincon office of Yates-Astro really is “home” for him. He gives back to his hometown by officiating sports events for all age groups in and around Effingham County.

His influence goes beyond our area through his involvement as a Shriner and a Mason. Shriner Hospitals for children never charge for their services, a blessing that is the result of the work of Darrell and many others. The Children’s Home in Macon is an outgrowth of his volunteer work as well.

Darrell considers it a form of “giving back” to his hometown by protecting area homes and businesses as a pest control professional with Yates-Astro. It is hometown people like Darrell Dasher who have made Yates-Astro, a family owned local business, the largest pest control provider in the region.
