IT’S LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION at Halcyon Waters this summer after the Hope Island community won a role in an upcoming Foxtel drama series.

Halcyon Waters is one of a handful of Gold Coast locations to be chosen as the backdrop for the 10-episode series being produced for Foxtel and Sky UK by Academy Award-winning See-Saw Films. Best known for their work on six-time Academy Award nominated ‘Lion’, ‘The King’s Speech’ and multiaward winning ‘Top of the Lake’.

Filming began in November and involves several shoots inside two homes, the pool and Leisure Club, the library, Lakehouse, Celebration Park and the Secret Garden until January.

The cast includes Frances O’Connor, Dame Harriet Walter, Noni Hazlehurst, Robyn Nevin, John Waters, Alex Dimitriades, Luke Arnold and Roy Billing.

The as-yet unnamed series tells the story of an Australia-based doctor who brings her estranged mother out from England to live in a lifestyle community.

The narrative follows their stumbling and fractious journey towards rebuilding their relationship.

Halcyon Waters home owners Paula Clegg and Rod Baker were only too happy to move out for six days while their home became a film set.

Paula said Rod had surprised her with the news when she arrived home from a holiday.

“I drove into the garage and Rod was there and he said, ‘you better hurry up we’ve got a film crew of 20 people coming in an hour to look at the house,” Paula said.

“I said, ‘Rod, pull the other one, I know I’ve been away for four days, but you don’t have to make these wild stories up’.

“You never hear of a film shoot in a lifestyle community; it’s just so amazing and it’s great for Halcyon.”

Rod joked that their home was about to become famous. “Hopefully it will add value to our property when we come to sell,” he laughed.

“This is totally new to both of us, so from that point of view it’s fascinating to see these people working and to be able to say our house is being used in a TV series.”

Next-door neighbours Paul and Avalyn Muller said they were delighted to have front-row seats to the film set, given that their two-level home also overlooks Celebration Park and the Lakehouse.

“We’re thinking of letting out some balcony seats for people to watch,” Paul joked.

“I think it’s a feather in the cap for Halcyon to be chosen.” ■ The series will screen on Foxtel’s drama series channel, Fox Showcase next year.

Oh what a year it’s been With summer and the festive season upon us, it’s time to make room for those sentiments, traditions and celebrations that Christmas brings; sharing, giving, family time, recharging the batteries, reflecting on the year and preparing for what’s to come.

The spirit of Christmas looms large and reminds us here at Halcyon to ponder our own essence and purpose; to think about what we have achieved and how we continue into 2019.

At the heart of Halcyon is the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of our home owners.

We seek to do this by understanding our home owners’ needs, wants and their journey.

Baby boomers have more time and better health for travel, community involvement and playing an active role in the lives of their family and friends. They have more choice and financial independence. Knowing this is at the core of what we do at Halcyon.

From our leisure clubs, wide streets and private homes to our social gatherings and broader community activities; when you step into a Halcyon community you will see for yourself how we can promise and deliver home owner delight.

Our 2018 timeline of events (left) demonstrates how passionately and actively Halcyon’s home owners are embracing their next chapter and how this inspires us to keep growing and innovating.

We would like to thank our dedicated employees for their contributions and willingness to go above and beyond to make so many of Halcyon’s achievements possible.

Most importantly, we’d like to thank our home owners because it’s your belief in us that allows Halcyon to be what it is. We’ve welcomed 500 new home owners this year and we look forward to welcoming another 500 people in the year to come.

Where will you be this Christmas?

At Halcyon Glades.

Who are you spending Christmas with?

My husband, Win, and the other 60 or so people coming to the Halcyon Glades Orphans’ Lunch in the Rec Club.

What are you doing for Christmas?

I’m organising the second Halcyon Glades Orphans’ Lunch and expecting between 60 and 70 people to attend.

It all came about last year after I suggested that a few of us who were spending Christmas without their families get together. We ended up with a crowd of about 50 of us.

Some people said it was more fun than spending Christmas with their relatives and everybody who went said they’d be back again this year.

I organise for everyone to bring a plate of food such as meat, salad or dessert as well as their own alcohol and drinking glasses. We set up tables in the Rec Club and I make sure the seating plan mixes everyone up, so they get to know new people.

We play some hilarious party games that really break the ice and there’s a lot of yelling and laughing. It starts at 10am and last year some people stayed until 6pm. I organised a lot of corporate Christmas parties during my working life – I love doing it. ■

What’s your favourite Christmas tradition?

Attending church on Christmas Day. Where will you be this Christmas?

At Halcyon Lakeside.

Who are you spending Christmas with?

Our eldest daughter and her partner are coming up from Sydney.

What are you doing for Christmas?

Christmas morning will be spent opening our gifts from Santa and enjoying the phone calls from our three young grandchildren. Christmas afternoon will be spent reminiscing and relaxing after a lovely lunch of seafood, cold meats and salads, not forgetting the plum pudding and trifle.

We’re also doing another Christmas lights display in our front garden after we were lucky enough to win Halcyon’s inter-community competition last year.

We’ve kept our red and white theme and added a special new frosty attraction that will delight the kids big and small. We’re putting all the effort in for the kids who’ll be here for the school holidays. We started putting our display together in late October with the help of our wonderful neighbours Jim and Carol East.

We use good quality decorations with some coming from as far away as the United States. It makes people happy and we enjoy it when they come around to see the lights. ■

Our daughter, son-in-law and our granddaughter.

What are you doing for Christmas?

The family Christmas breakfast is the biggest thing for our kids because we used to do it when they were little. To them it’s not Christmas unless we have the breakfast. It’s what they look forward to the most.

Breakfast is always ham, eggs, tomatoes, croissants, mangoes, mince pies, champagne and bon bons.

We usually have breakfast first and then open the presents but with our two-year-old granddaughter, Josie, here we’ll probably do the presents first. She’s our only grandchild and she’s recharged Christmas for us.

Christmas is about kids and we’ve got an excuse now to put the lights and the Christmas tree up. We finish off the afternoon playing boardgames, enjoying a seafood dinner and a homemade Christmas pudding (Sylvia’s special recipe). ■ Continued on page 9

Jingle Bells.

What’s your favourite Christmas tradition?

We say a prayer around the Christmas lunch table.

Another tradition was when we lived on our 50-acre property and the whole family would go out searching for a Christmas tree to chop down. We can’t do that this year, so we’ve planted a NSW Christmas Bush in our new garden as a way of keeping that tradition alive. We won’t be chopping that one down!

Where will you be this Christmas?

It’s our first Christmas at Halcyon Landing and we’re hosting our family in our new home.

Who are you spending Christmas with?

Our two daughters, sons-in-law and five grandchildren who are aged from 8 to 19.

What are you doing for Christmas?

A grazing-style lunch of cold meat and salads at home with the family, some board games with the grandchildren, maybe a game of tennis and then we’ll hit the pool.

The kids love to go fishing so someone might take them down to the river at some stage. The great thing is that the parents of one of my sons-in-law also live here (Liz and Neil Hamilton), so the grandchildren get to see both sets of grandparents on Christmas Day. ■

Hark the Herald Angels Sing – it’s the most rousing one.

What’s your favourite Christmas tradition?

Spending time with the family and being there on Christmas morning when our grandsons open their presents.

Where will you be this Christmas?

Brisbane, where our sons live. We moved to Caloundra from North Queensland to be closer to them.

Who are you spending Christmas with?

My wife Val, our two sons and their families.

What are you doing for Christmas?

We will have Christmas breakfast or lunch at one son’s place and then it’s off to the other son’s for dinner.

We have typical Australian fare – prawns, ham and the like.

I’m also a member of Halcyon Parks’ Toy Boys group which, along with the Buderim Men’s Shed, makes hundreds of wooden Christmas toys for kids in crisis on the Sunshine Coast each year. This year, we’ve made more than 600 toys including trains, tractors, bulldozers, jeeps, trailers, aeroplanes, doll’s beds and prams. Halcyon Parks’ art and craft groups help us with painting and making pillows, blankets and sheets for the prams and beds.

We make the toys in the work shed throughout the year and only stop for Christmas, then get back into it again early in the new year. We’ve had a successful year and we thoroughly enjoy ourselves in our efforts.

We would love more people to join us next year. ■

The pets that live at Halcyon

Larraine Olzard takes a ride with Shadow on board

TAKING A CAT on a daily bike ride sounds impossible.

But not for Halcyon Glades home owner Larraine Olzard and her fabulous feline, Shadow.

Every afternoon, Larraine sets off on her trike for a leisurely ride around the community with Shadow calmly – and comfortably – sitting in front of her in his quilt-lined cage.

“I think I’ve created a stir,” she said of the surprised looks she gets as she rides around.

“People do a lot of double takes. They are fascinated by it and they say, ‘oh it’s a cat in there, not a dog’.

“It’s a really, really lovely experience, Shadow loves it and I love it.”

She’s found that having Shadow along for the ride is a great conversation starter.

“I’ve met people I probably wouldn’t have met otherwise,” she laughed.

“It takes me a while to get around the block – it’s a 15-minute ride that turns into half-an-hour with all the chats I have. And one of my neighbours loves Shadow and has offered to look after him if we go away.”

Shadow’s afternoon trike excursions aren’t as surprising when you learn that he was happy to ride in the car when Larraine and husband Tom lived at Beerburrum.

Shadow at Halcyon Glades At first, he would cringe when they patted him but over time Shadow has rewarded their kindness with loyalty and trust.

“He is my little shadow,” she said. “He follows me around and if I’m up, he’s up with me.

“If I get up to do some sewing in the middle of the night, he follows me and sits in a chair next to mine.

We love him to bits and he’s a big part of our life.”

So, when the couple decided to downsize, there was no way they were making the move without Shadow.

“Puss loved the car, he’d sit on the back seat and look out the window,” she said.

“Puss had to come,” Larraine said. One place we looked at would not allow pets and I said, ‘forget it, if my cat can’t come, I can’t come’.”

The 13-year-old Birman cat became part of the family five years ago when Larraine and Tom adopted him from the RSPCA.

Tom, who was a dog lover before he met Larraine, also takes Shadow for walks on a leash around the community. ■

Enter young Rambo, who paired wonderfully with Roxy and – unlike his namesake – is a lover not a fighter.

“I’ll put my arm into the cage and say, ‘step up buddy’ and he comes out like that,” Darlene said.

“He also sits up on a stand and lets Paul clip his feathers in the bathroom.”

As is common with the breed, Roxy and Rambo talk.

They often say things like “what are you doing” or “come on” to Darlene and Paul. They even speak to each other.

“Rambo tells me when he wants to be covered up at night and he has special calls for when he wants me to come and clean up or to feed him in the morning,” Darlene said.

The feathered couple are loving their new lifestyle after moving into the community with their owners Darlene and Paul Smetana five months ago.

Darlene said she was thrilled their chirpy Alexandrine parrots had been welcomed just as warmly to Halcyon Lakeside as she and Paul had.

“I was concerned about how they would be received but people knock on our door and ask to see them and say how nice it is to hear their sounds,” Darlene said.

Favourite foods include passionfruit, toast and fried egg.

Darlene said the birds seemed happier since the move; something she attributed to the design of their new home.

“The open-plan layout means they can see me most of the time from their cage,” she said.

“There’s more whistling and talking than before.

“I can’t believe how well they’ve adjusted, they’re as good as gold.”

Darlene said that Roxy and Rambo required a lot of care but were wonderful company.

She added that the plucky pair aren’t looking their usual sleek and spectacular selves because they are shedding their old feathers to make way for new growth. ■

“If we’re in the backyard, we can hear our neighbours whistling to them.

“We’ve even had offers to look after them when we go away.”

A self-confessed “crazy animal lover”, Darlene rescued Roxy from a miserable life 14 years ago and soon discovered that a mate was needed to complete the picture.

Jasper at Halcyon Parks JASPER THE RAGDOLL cat made a shock entrance into Dick and Shirley McCann’s world eight years ago.

Just a few months old, the adorable bundle of cream and grey fur was Shirley’s birthday surprise from their three children.

“It was a bit of a shock initially, but he took over,” Dick laughed.

“I’d come home from the hospital and Jasper made me feel as if he knew what was happening,” he said.

“They are great company for a person by themselves, that’s for sure.

“From that point of view, I believe every older person should have a pet.” ■

It’s fair to say that Jasper has become the McCann’s fourth child. And like most children, he has his moods.

“I’ve always had dogs and I didn’t realise that cats can be affectionate,” Dick said.

“He’s never far from us. No matter where we are in the house, he’s sitting close by.

“But if he’s not happy, he walks off with his tail in the air like a human would stick their finger up.”

Long-time feline fan Shirley said she loved Jasper from the instant she laid eyes on him.

“My mum has always had cats, but I was a bit concerned because Dick didn’t like cats at all,” she said.

“But Jasper sat on his lap the first afternoon we had him. We love him, and Dick really spoils him.”

Dick said he appreciated Jasper’s companionship when Shirley was in hospital for five weeks several years ago.

ALICE THE CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL is living like a queen at Halcyon Waters.

The seven-year-old ‘fur baby’ goes everywhere with her doting mum Lynne Williams, who moved into the community in early October.

Formerly a therapy dog for Lynne’s late husband Bob, Alice now occupies a large place in Lynne’s heart.

“She’s all I’ve got really and she’s a huge part of my life,” Lynne said.

“Having her around to help me cope with the grief has been lovely because I’m not on my own.

“She’s a one-person dog and I’m happy to be that one person.”

They lead a full and active life together, with Alice accompanying Lynne on shopping excursions, visits to friends, and trike rides around the community.

“I do a lot of biking, so she hops on the back of the trike and we also have a dog pram which allows her to come along while I train for the 21km walk in the Queenstown Marathon,” Lynne said.

Alice and Lynne also volunteer several hours each week in the Story Dogs program at Musgrave Hill State School.

The program involves young primary school children reading books to dogs as a way of improving their literacy and confidence in a relaxed and non-judgemental environment – an ideal fit for this calm and patient dog.

Alice at Halcyon Waters All this is done in style, with Alice having access to a wardrobe of eye-catching outfits – lovingly made by Lynne – as well as hats and special goggles to protect her eyes during trike rides.

Lynne is now working on a reflective outfit for Alice to wear on those rides.

Like any modern miss, this pooch is on social media with her own Facebook page – Awesome Alice – highlighting her busy life, including encounters with her feline ‘siblings’ Basil and Willow.

And because she’s no stranger to the camera, Alice will feature as Miss December in the Q Super Centre’s 2019 calendar.

“I’m such a tragic mother,” Lynne laughed.

HALCYON GLADES’ newcomers Keith and Kathy Elliott are making the digital revolution work for them.

Like a growing proportion of older Australians*, they are finding that the online world is a user-friendly place that can make life easier, simpler and better.

Just by tapping on their smartphones and laptops, Keith and Kathy are accessing library books, music, movies, YouTube, news, online banking, and are keeping in closer touch with their family in France.

They reflect the trend across Halcyon communities, where tablet and smartphone usage amongst home owners has risen almost 10 per cent over the past year.

“I’ve made an effort to keep up with technology and use the web for any information we require,” Keith said.

Keith is a YouTube convert; using the popular video-sharing site in the way that people read encyclopaedias and instruction manuals in the past.

“YouTube is brilliant, I use it for anything that I want to know,” he said.

“If you want to know how to install a dishwasher or work on an outboard motor, just look it up on YouTube.

“And if you can’t get the information there, you can get it on Google.”

Kathy uses YouTube differently; tuning in to watch ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, and other musical entertainment such as The Ten Tenors in concert and André Rieu.

She has also eliminated the hassle of library visits by regularly streaming audio books and e-books from the online catalogue of three local libraries to the laptop and then onto her e-reader.

“I do it all from home,” she said.

Keith Elliott Keith takes it a step further by streaming audio books and e-books onto his phone and then listening to them on his Bluetooth earphones, which offer a better quality of sound.

He gets all his news online – free on the ABC News website – which allows for 20 news topics, and he uses iview to catch up on TV programs.

“There are great apps allowing access to news, sport, music, catch-up TV shows, movies and documentaries at any time,” he added.

For Kathy, keeping in contact with her son and grandchildren living in France is easy and instant thanks to texting – which Keith taught her to do – as well as via video chats and the free WhatsApp messenger service.

When it comes to social media, the Elliotts are less enthusiastic, wanting to stay away from the “drama” that it can create. Their concessions on that are Facebook and Instagram, which they only read.

Being so active online hasn’t stopped Keith and Kathy from being just as active in the Halcyon Glades community, which they moved to from their semi-acreage property near Montville in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Since moving in, they’ve certainly joined in, with Keith walking up to 4km each day and swimming in the Rec Club pool.

Kathy enjoys Tai Chi and expressing her creative side with the Glades craft group.

Travel is also big on the agenda for these keen road trippers, who’ve been around Australia five times and overseas several times since Keith retired in 1997.

They’re looking forward to more getaways in their motorhome, with their new life at Halcyon Glades making it so easy to ‘lock and leave’.

Keith said they moved to the Caboolture north community in June to be closer to family, major shops, public transport and medical facilities.

“We’d lived in Flaxton for 20 years and it was time to move,” he said.

“We looked at Vision by Halcyon, nearly bought at Halcyon Greens and on the way home we saw Halcyon Glades and liked the look of it.

“I’ve always loved the northside of Brisbane because I was born and bred here.” ■

joins the Halcyon band Keith van Geyzel

AFTER AN INTERNATIONAL music and entertainment career spanning decades and continents, Keith van Geyzel is happy to be playing to a more laidback beat on the Gold Coast.

The musician and prolific composer’s decision to retire and move to Vision by Halcyon with wife Karin 18 months ago has changed their lives “exceptionally”.

It allowed Keith to turn the page on the relentless pressure of his long and varied music career and to finally have the time to engage more personally with his lifelong passion: the piano.

A globetrotting musical career meant he and Karin lived for years in the United Kingdom, Europe, United States and Asia.

Keith worked with international and Australian artists, and created the musical scores for many movies, documentaries and countless advertisements for household names.

But these days he’s relishing some well-deserved “me time” at the piano, which takes centre stage in his waterfront home at Hope Island.

“It’s really nice to play for my own enjoyment now, because when you think about it, I haven’t done that since I was a teenager,” Keith said. “Once you get working it’s actually very difficult to come home and practise if you’ve just spent seven hours doing music.”

Keith now spends time each day tickling the ivories for pleasure and admits he often “gets lost” for hours in the joy of playing.

He’s also sharing his wealth of musical expertise and experience with the community by starting a choir. Around 20 male and female home owners have joined the group, which gathers around Vision’s new piano each Thursday morning.

“They’re not the professional singers that I’m used to but it’s a different situation because I can see how much they’re enjoying it and what it’s doing for them and that gives you a different kind of buzz,” he said.

“They’re starting to get really, really good, and you see their enjoyment and that’s what gives me enjoyment, because I put on a different hat for that and it becomes the Vision thing, it’s very pleasing to offer that.”

Word of the group has spread and singers from nearby Halcyon Waters have also joined the choir.

I thought we were going to retire to a quiet life, but there’s so much to see and do, and we’re involved with a lot of things in the community.

Resisting offers to return to work, Keith is now happy to be “busy in a good way” on the Gold Coast.

“Living like this for us is very exceptional and not usual,” he said.

“We just like being based here and we don’t go away on holiday.

“I don’t want to see another plane, I don’t want to go through security ever again because I’ve had years and years of that, and I can’t do that anymore.

“At the same time, we’re very busy - I thought we were going to retire to a quiet life, but there’s so much to see and do, and we’re involved with a lot of things in the community.”

They both love Hope Island and the relaxed lifestyle that comes with the location and the Vision community.

“What’s not to like – we’ve got everything that we really need here,” Keith said.

“And the big thing for us is the peace and quiet with our neighbours.

“It’s very important to maintain the rules, we like that. We know what it’s like to live in big cities where there are no rules and you’re scared to go out at night.”

Karin, who is involved with Vision’s craft group, said their new life feels like a permanent vacation.

“We’re still in holiday mode and we’ve only been here a year and a half,” she laughed.

“The Gold Coast is great. I think it’s one of the best lifestyles in Australia, for us anyway.” ■

As modern family life becomes more hectic and demanding, grandparents are playing a bigger and more central role in the lives of their grandchildren. Halcyon recently paid tribute to this precious and irreplaceable relationship during National Grandparents Day celebrations across its communities. We spoke to three Halcyon couples about their grandkids.

WHETHER IT’S FINDING a Harry Potter costume for Book Week, whipping up a birthday cake or emergency babysitting, Halcyon Greens home owners Russell and Judy Linwood are always there for their six grandchildren.

With two living at Coomera and the others just 60 minutes away in north Brisbane, the Linwoods are a big part of their grandkids’ lives; be it sleepovers, go-karting adventures, movies, pickleball or fishing.

“We’re very devoted to them and we have always been hands-on,” Judy said. “Our eldest granddaughter, Kate, has been coming to us on a Saturday since she was six weeks old. Family first has always been my motto; they are my priority.”

What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance. They give unconditional love, kindness, patience, humour, comfort, lessons in life. And, most importantly, cookies.

The former schoolteacher said their role as grandparents was one of love and enrichment.

“We have more financial capacity now than when we were raising our own children, so we can do nicer things for them all,” she said. “If we see one of them with a talent for something like art or mathematics, we foster it.”

Russell, an ex-military serviceman and former ambulance service executive, said he enjoyed getting his grandchildren away from digital devices.

“Most children these days don’t do anywhere near enough practical and physical things,” he said.

“I teach them as many of the practical skills that are fast going down the gurgler in the 21st Century; good manners, courtesy, direction, basic orienteering, and taking them yabbying.

“The great majority of parents now have to, or choose to, work full-time and this is what makes raising children fundamentally more difficult for them. So, this is where grandparents become so valuable.”

Coming from an era when grandparents were geographically and emotionally distant, Russell and Judy are relishing their bond with their grandkids.

ON THE SUNSHINE COAST, Halcyon Lakeside home owners Noel and Coby Hocking count down to the school holidays when their grandchildren Rhys, 10, and Carys, 8, come up from Brisbane to stay for a week and a half. The kids also come up for weekend sleepovers.

“They’re in to everything, they’ll often bring their bikes up and we’ll go cycling around the lakes and over to the playground,” Noel said.

“We enjoy fishing, the games room, going to the library to play chess, watching movies in the cinema and paddling around in the pool.

Halcyon Glades home owners Graham and Dawn with grandchildren Isla, Benjamin, Brayden and Jacob SPEAKING OF JOURNEYS, Halcyon Glades home owners Dawn and Graham Dukes have certainly gone the extra mile for their five grandchildren over the past 11 years.

For 12 months, Dawn clocked up thousands of kilometres driving regularly from Brisbane to the outback Queensland town of Mitchell to care for her newborn grandson, Brayden.

Dawn didn’t think twice about making the 1,200km roundtrip that took seven hours each way.

“They didn’t have any day care up there and my daughter was the schoolteacher, so if she didn’t have someone to look after him she would have had to give up work,” she said.

“Their preference is to go down to the swimming pool at night time and swim with the lights on; they think it’s marvellous. They really enjoy our company and we enjoy theirs just as much.”

Coby said they had always been very involved with the grandkids. “They enjoy coming up here to the ‘resort’ for the holidays, they think it’s pretty sweet,” she said.

“It’s lovely having them here and being part of their lives on a regular basis. And their mum and dad really appreciate our support.”

Noel said their role was to give their grandchildren stability, precious one-on-one time and a fun-filled break from their busy routines.

“They have our full attention the whole time, and we hope we’re able to pass on some of our knowledge and values,” he said. ■

“It was fun, it was no problem and it was my choice.”

Ten years on, Brayden and the family now live in Kingaroy where Dawn still provides childcare when needed and Graham heads up every other weekend.

The couple also visited Cairns recently to watch their Brisbane-based granddaughter, Isla, 11, compete in the 2018 Australian Irish Dancing Championships.

“We try to do as much as we possibly can with the grandchildren and we’re fairly close to them,” Graham said.

“They’re one of the things that give you purpose in life.

Halcyon hosts athletes

with a new lease on life HALCYON WATERS celebrated the life-changing gift of organ donation when the community made its debut as a host sporting venue for the Australian Transplant Games in October.

The Hope Island-based community was chosen as the location for the Games’ triathlon event thanks to its welcoming home owners, beautiful swimming pool, and wide, quiet and safe streets.

Close to 70 home owners put their hands up to help organise the day. Their hard work and support helped make this inspiring event an outstanding success, and one that the athletes branded the best they had competed in.

Rainy weather did not deter the athletes but saw the triathlon become an aquathon – swimming and running only – after the wet roadway was deemed too dangerous for cycling.

After organisers made the necessary recalculations, the athletes swam laps of the Leisure Club pool and ran a designated circuit on the community’s streets. They were cheered and encouraged along by their supporters, volunteers and home owners who lined the race route.

Afterwards, the athletes, who included Halcyon Parks community manager Kate Clark, were joined by supporters, volunteers and home owners for a barbecue brunch and celebration in the community’s park.

Paul Watson, who co-ordinated Halcyon Waters’ volunteer effort, said home owners had eagerly

thrown their support behind the event.

“Most of us think it’s a damn good cause and it’s one that home owners understand and feel for because at some time it has affected them or their family,” he said.

“It was a fantastic day, everybody who was on the track was waving the athletes on.

“The atmosphere was brilliant and the feedback from the participants was brilliant.

“They said they’ve never had a Games experience like that before.

And that was the highlight – just how wonderfully they received it.”

Paul said the overwhelming support for, and success of, the event had opened the door to other possibilities.

“It made us think that we should host something like that again, maybe an inter-Halcyon games,” he said.

“There’s an enormous amount of experience and intellect in this place and it loves to be tapped for good causes.”

Home owner Wendy Morrin said she thoroughly enjoyed her role as a volunteer team leader on the run leg.

“It was wonderful to hear some of the athletes’ stories,” she said.

“We’d watched them running around and then found out they’d had a heart and lung transplant, it was very inspiring.

“I’m already a donor, but if I wasn’t, that experience would have convinced me to sign up.”

Fellow volunteer team leader Maureen OKeefe said helping out gave her a unique opportunity to get close to the competitors.

“We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, it was great talking to the participants and understanding what they have overcome to participate and be here,” she said.

“We had more of a chance to talk to them because we were on the water station.

“I also got to meet some new home owners in what was a friendly, relaxed and enjoyable experience.”

National Membership and Sports Administrator for the Australian Transplant Games Matty Hempstalk said the Halcyon Waters community was the perfect location for the competition.

“It is ideal because it’s safe and secure, there are no police involved in closing streets and the roads are wide enough for multiple runners and bikes to get through,” he said.

Matty said events like the Australian Transplant Games were an opportunity to spread the message of organ donation.

“Currently, only half of all transplants go ahead because family members aren’t aware of the wishes of those who have passed away, so it’s incredibly important loved ones are made aware,” he said. ■

‘Farma Fresh’ dinner, which invited them to dress like a farmer and featured entertainment and raffles.

Money raised will be distributed to the Queensland Drought Appeal, Buy a Bale of Hay, Aussie Helpers and the Queensland Country Women’s Association.

The community’s Sow and Grow group also donated all the proceeds of its fresh vegie sales to the cause.

Halcyon Landing community manager Linda Studley said the current drought had struck an empathetic chord in the community where many home owners have ties to agriculture.

“We’ve got ex-farmers and people whose profession was in agriculture, so it has really hit a nerve with them and it means a lot for the community to do something like this,” Linda said.

Halcyon Landing home owner Trisha Taylor initiated the fundraising effort by passing around a donation tin at several community events.

Meanwhile, more than 200 people at Halcyon Lakeside gathered for a ‘Parma for a Farmer’ fundraising dinner that was instigated by home owners Alan and Heather Ogilvie.

The couple was galvanised to help after seeing media reports of how hard the drought has hit rural communities.

Community manager Tracey Yeo said the evening’s success reflected the generous and selfless nature of Glades home owners.

“They get behind so much and they are so generous,” she said. “It was really impressive, everyone was so upbeat and willing to pitch in.”

Vision by Halcyon tapped the deep musical talent of its home owners to stage a drought relief concert that drew 110 people to the Leisure Club.

Accomplished pianist and composer Keith van Geyzel accompanied singers Clint Talbot and Alan Welsh, along with guest vocalist Lesley Hartz, for the Sunday afternoon concert followed by a sausage sizzle.

At Halcyon Waters, a dinner organised by home owner Jann Rigg and a Sunday afternoon concert with the community’s Haltones singing group saw plenty of cash tipped into the donation bucket.

“We decided we couldn’t just sit back and watch the disaster unfold,” Alan said.

Regional community manager Renee Ferguson said Vision and Waters home owners felt strongly about supporting struggling farmers through this difficult time.

“There are lots of folk living at Lakeside who have been farmers or have family who are still farming, so it’s had a direct hit on us here.

“There’s a few people here who’ve come off the land themselves, and they are aware that we need those farmers to produce our food,” Renee said.

“From the moment we started planning ‘Parma for a Farmer’ it just kept building and it’s been both heart-warming and humbling to see what a community can do for others in need.”

home away from home HALCYON HOME OWNERS love putting their heart and soul into a good cause and their huge support for Ronald McDonald House (RMH) at Herston is a testament to this.

The three-level complex right next to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital provides comfortable accommodation and support services for seriously ill or injured children and their families.

It is one of three such facilities run by Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland (RMHC SEQ) with the two others at South Brisbane, where one is within the Queensland Children’s

Hospital (QCH) and the other located opposite the QCH and Mater Mothers’ Hospital.

The organisation also has Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside the Gold Coast University Hospital and QCH. RMHC SEQ CEO Dr John Gilmour said the charity’s Houses helped to preserve the family unit in the midst of physical, emotional and financial stress.

“It gives parents the chance to draw hope and comfort from other families in similar situations, while being supported by dedicated and friendly staff and volunteers,” Dr Gilmour said.

“The majority of our families live in Queensland. However, we have a number of families who travel from interstate or overseas who use our facilities while their children are receiving specialist treatment in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast.”

Aside from providing 50 bright and cheery rooms for weary families to lay their heads at night, the RMH Herston is a ‘home away from home’ with its fully equipped kitchen, games room, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, parents’ retreat and library, baby room and guest laundry.

And so, home owners across Halcyon communities adopted the charity last year and continue to give their support in a variety of ways.

Those who took part in the 2017 and 2018 Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast Marathons raised a total of $17,000 for the charity, enabling Halcyon to ‘adopt’, or fund, three accommodation rooms in the Herston facility.

Home owner craft groups have also donated handmade items such as plush toys, welcome bags, colourful blankets and cheery paintings to make families feel more comfortable and ‘at home’ during their stay.

Most recently, home owners travelled to RMH Herston to participate in the Bake Off and Make a Meal programs during which they cooked treats, snacks and three-course dinners for families.

Halcyon Glades home owner Leonie Hanton said she was delighted to be able to ‘give back’ to the charity that was there for her daughter and son-in-law when their baby son was in hospital.

“They said nothing but good things about Ronald McDonald House after staying there,” Leonie said.

“It wouldn’t have been easy for them if they didn’t have Ronald McDonald House.

“I didn’t realise how much this facility was needed by families.”

Their experience inspired Leonie to participate in the Sunshine Coast Marathon and, more recently, in the Make a Meal program.

Fellow Halcyon Glades home owner Norma Thomas was part of a Bake Off team that whipped up batches of scones, muffins, cupcakes, mini pizzas, brownies and cakes in the kitchen at RMH Herston.

She was thrilled that the delicious aroma of their baking lured some of the guests down to the kitchen.

“My sister slept on a hospital chair for four months while her daughter was in hospital after an accident that also hospitalised her husband,” Jeff said.

“We moved into their home and looked after their other kids. So, we have first-hand knowledge of the chaos it throws the family into when someone has to go to hospital.”

Ken said the Bake Off was an opportunity to do something productive for a great cause.

“We know of Ronald McDonald House and the good work they do, and we want to contribute to that,” he said. ■

“They were very grateful for what we were doing,” she said.

“Having this food made for them means they can come back to have a cup of tea and something nice to eat after they’ve been in the hospital ward all day.

“It’s a great feeling to be doing something like this, and to know that people appreciate what you’ve done.”

menu for ‘Spice Boys’ MALE HOME OWNERS at Halcyon Greens are discovering their inner MasterChef after project director Scott Ng put cooking lessons on the community’s menu.

Scott Ng sharing his culinary skills with the ‘Spice Boys’

Scott, renowned throughout Halcyon for his cooking prowess, sparked a culinary uprising when he presented his first ‘Spice Boys’ cookery class.

He dished up the lesson with the aim of arming the community’s blokes with some kitchen skills to surprise – and impress – their better halves.

“It came about after I had been chatting with some of the ladies who were saying how lopsided the cooking duties were at home,” he said.

“I suggested to the guys that we prove we can all do this, and to surprise their wives by making them a meal.

“I saw it as an opportunity for them to learn and experience something new in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

“For most of them it was a first-time experience, they had a bit of fun and picked up a new skill.”

And so Halcyon Greens’ very first ‘Spice Boys’ event took shape, with 18 men fronting up for the three-hour cooking lesson.

They were divided into teams who cooked at work stations set up in the style of a MasterChef episode.

Scott took them through the ingredients and recipes for three classic Asian dishes – San Choy Bow, spring rolls and Vietnamese rice paper rolls – before letting them loose in the ‘kitchen’.

After much laughter, friendly banter and some odd-shaped spring rolls, the meals were served up as lunch for the men’s wives.

“A couple of the ladies were surprised and stated that the boys could start cooking at home while others said it just proved that they needed to keep doing the cooking,” Scott said.

San Choy Bow Home owner Lloyd Whitley said he went into the session with very limited cooking experience but emerged with new skills, confidence and the intention of cooking at least once a week at home.

“I’m not much into cooking – barbecues are my specialty – but my wife told me I was going to the class,” he laughed. “I picked up a few good ideas and tips on things that were quite simple and not as complicated as I thought they would be.”

His next-door neighbour Darrel Cramer said it was a great learning experience.

“Like many others who were there, I don’t do a lot of cooking, so it was new to me and new to them, but we learnt a lot,” he said.

Joking that his previous cooking experience was takeaway food, Garry Milroy said he went into the lesson with high expectations.

“I want to be on MasterChef,” he laughed. “It was challenging, but it turned out not bad at all.”

Fellow home owner Bob Lewis said the experience had expanded his respectable cooking repertoire to include Asian cuisine.

“I consider myself a pretty good cook, but I’ve never been into the Asian part of it,” he said. “I’d never done that before and it was a lot easier than I thought.”

The outstanding success of the first ‘Spice Boys’ session has seen it become a regular on the community’s calendar with Scott planning a lesson in Italian cookery as well as culinary sessions for the ladies.

He is also planning a community cook-off to determine who is Halcyon Greens’ best ‘chef’. ■ Practice makes perfect

INGREDIENTS

750g pork mince 1 ½ tsp soy sauce ½ tsp sugar 1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves diced 1 tsp diced ginger 1 ½ cups grated carrot 1 ½ tbsp hoisin sauce 1 ½ tbsp oyster sauce Handful of iceberg lettuce finely sliced 3 spring onions finely sliced 1 chilli finely sliced (optional) 1 ½ tsp cornflour 1 iceberg lettuce to serve INSTRUCTIONS

1. To prepare the pork mince add 1 ½ tsp of soy sauce and ½ tsp sugar for every 500g of mince.

Mix thoroughly in a bowl with a wooden spoon.

2. Add 1 tbsp of olive oil to a fry pan over a medium-high heat.

3. Add diced garlic and ginger to pan and stir until browned.

4. Add pork mince mixture to pan. Using a wooden spoon, break apart the chunks of mince.

5. Once mince is browned add grated carrot, hoisin sauce and oyster sauce to the pan. Mix through.

6. Add sliced lettuce (and sliced chilli if you like the heat) to mince mixture.

7. Finally, to thicken sauce add ¼ cup of water and 1 ½ tsp of cornflour to mince mixture and stir thoroughly until cornflour dissolves.

8. To serve, cut bottom off iceberg lettuce and peel into lettuce cups. Rinse cups under water and pat dry with paper towel. Scoop a large amount of the pork mince mixture onto the lettuce cups and garnish with sliced shallots.

9. Enjoy!

Tony Kellerman, Andre De Bats and Clive Stephan started the Halcyon Glades Orchid Group a few months ago and were overwhelmed by the response.

Some have brought along their sick and dying orchids in the hope of learning how to resuscitate their beloved blooms.

Interested home owners – aka ‘orchid-teers’ – are flocking to the group’s friendly and informative gatherings, keen to get their green fingers on handy tips for

Through regular workshops and demonstrations, the trio has been giving home owners helpful insights into fertilisers, fungicides, pots, watering, shade houses, and dividing and re-potting orchids.

There’s also been a visit to the Caboolture Annual Orchid Show and a group tour of a local orchid nursery.

And such is the group’s enthusiasm and momentum that they hope to stage Halcyon Glades’ first orchid show in March next year, allowing this bunch of green thumbs to show off their blooming achievements.

So, what is it about orchids?

Tony believes it’s the sheer beauty and vibrancy of the flowers that draws people to orchid growing, like bees to honey.

“There is no doubt about it, orchids get into your blood, and growing orchids can be addictive,” Tony said.

Andre agrees, saying orchids have a lot going for them.

“They are at the top of the botanical food chain – they’re very well developed and there’s so many variations,” he said.

“They look lovely, they have lots of colours and lovely shapes, some are scented, and their flowers last a long time.”

Andre, who has grown orchids for 18 years, said people often received them as gifts but weren’t sure how to keep them happy and healthy in the medium to long term.

“Some or all of their orchids die, and they wonder what they are doing wrong,” he said.

“So, we see the group’s role as giving home owners the basic information they need to grow orchids successfully.”

Tony said orchids could be tricky because in nature they grow upside down on trees, and often in a tropical climate.

“The very first thing we try to do is train them to grow in pots – and to them, it is upside down,” he said.

“So, to grow orchids successfully we need to know when to water, when to pot, how much water, how much sun, what fertiliser, and so on.

“You’ve got to duplicate their natural environment as much as possible.”

On that note, Tony said shade houses designed and built by the ‘orchid-teers’ have begun popping up across the community ever since the first batch of these “feats of engineering brilliance” were completed in August. ■

Tony’s top orchid-growing tips for beginners Buy well Make sure the orchid has flowered before and is free from disease and pests. When you get it home, spray it with quality insecticide.

Temperature & lighting Orchids should be given as much light as they can happily tolerate.

Direct sunlight should be avoided – particularly in summer.

Watering Generally, more water in summer and less in winter. Over watering kills far more orchids than under watering.

Pruning Trim old flower stems that have turned brown. If the stems are green, they may re-flower, so don’t cut them back.

Potting It’s best to re-pot orchids every couple of years. Generally, the best time to re-pot is in the orchid’s growing season, usually spring. Use a good quality potting medium – Kiwi Bark is the best – it’s high quality and orchids thrive in it.

HOME OWNERS Kerrin Cook and Helen Jillett are creating quite the buzz in the Halcyon Lakeside community.

this time the honey had a milky appearance and sweeter taste – reflecting the clover in flower over the winter months.

Their industrious and successful beekeeping has brought homemade honey to their neighbours’ doorsteps, much to the delight of Lakeside sweet tooths.

At harvest time, the word – and the aroma – spreads quickly through the Lakeside community.

Every few months, the community’s home owners can get their hands on the pure, raw bush honey produced by the thousands of bees in Kerrin and Helen’s hives.

Lakeside’s honey ‘industry’ started earlier in the year when the couple conducted their first ‘raid’ on the hives that they set up just after moving into the community last year.

That late summer harvest yielded 75kg of sweet, sticky produce with a distinctly melaleuca flavour thanks to those trees being in flower at the time.

Their most recent ‘raid’ netted about the same volume, but

“When we’re extracting the honey from the frames, home owners smell it and come running with their buckets wanting to get refills and asking, ‘is the shop open?’,” Kerrin laughed.

After harvesting and extraction, the honey is poured into jars, squeeze bottles and 1kg buckets for purchase by home owners at the community’s Thursday night Happy Hour.

The sales help to cover the big expense of beekeeping, with hives and honey extractors costing $1,000 each, not to mention the labour-intensive and messy work of harvesting.

“We always expect a big rush, people just love it and it sells like hot cakes,” Kerrin said.

Now that’s some workforce...

It takes the work of 22,700 bees to fill a standard jar of honey (454g). Over a year, the queen will produce between 100,000 and 200,000 bees that will each spend between 10 and 20 days collecting nectar. At its most productive, a single colony of bees could theoretically produce around 800kg of honey. No wonder they’re called worker bees!

“People who have health issues really appreciate the health benefits from organic raw honey.”

The honey often comes back to them in the form of muesli slices and baked goods made by their customers.

Helen said the ‘buzz’ around their beekeeping made them feel closer to the community.

“Everybody wants to know where the hives are, and people come up to us and say, ‘we’ve got your bees in our garden’,” she said.

“It’s nice to have this interest, it gives us a connection to the community because everybody knows about it.

“It makes you feel part of the community when you can contribute somehow.”

Helen began beekeeping on her Northern NSW sheep and cattle farm about three years ago.

“I just started it as a hobby because I wanted to have a go at it,” she said.

“I belong to two online beekeeping groups and I just Google it if I need help with something.

“There’s a lot to it but we’re just learning all these things as we go along.”

Kerrin said they appreciated the support of the Lakeside community, with the caretaker keeping an eye on their hives, which are located near his home, and community manager Donna Osborne making the labels for their honey containers. ■

Taking health to new heights PERSONAL TRAINER DAPHNEE BERNARD loves witnessing the life-changing impact of fitness on the home owners she works with each week at Halcyon Parks.

The former dancer and cross-country runner gave up event planning to become a personal trainer several years ago.

She ran boot camps and high intensity interval training sessions before her parents inspired her to change her focus.

“I started training them – Dad is 74 and Mum is 65 – and it was great seeing the improvement in their lifestyle with exercise, and how much more confident and independent they felt,” she said.

“I made the decision to work with older adults. It’s more rewarding and there are a lot of benefits for them.”

Daphnee runs two sessions a week at Halcyon Parks with up to 20 home owners.

Aimed at improving the mind, body and spirit, Daphnee’s sessions take in strength and conditioning, dance, balance, weights and aqua aerobics.

The key benefits of these regular workouts include building up strength, the prevention of falls and reducing the risk of dementia.

“I see how much confidence they build and how much energy they have, even from day one. Just by being more active and taking part,” she said.

“That’s how important we think it is,” she said.

Home owner Claire Crowell said staying active at Halcyon Parks had allowed her to take part in the 5km event in this year’s Sunshine Coast Marathon.

“It was something that I always thought I’d do,” she said. “The opportunity arose, and I did the 5km walk in less than an hour. I think I’ll be doing it again next year.”

One home owner’s confidence has gone sky-high – literally.

“My oldest client celebrated his birthday by skydiving out of a plane,” she said. “He was so excited and proud that he brought me the certificate the following week to prove he did it.”

Daphnee said being active also helps to boost emotional and mental health.

“The classes are a social gathering as well,” she said.

“The home owners come together, they have a bit of a laugh and have smiles on their faces.

“We’ve developed such a strong bond. Each Christmas we’ll all go somewhere to celebrate; we have lunch, play games and enjoy each other’s company. For me it’s their reward and my chance to say thank you.”

Daphnee encourages more home owners to try a class for themselves.

“My tip would be ‘break the ice’, just take that step and attend one class and see how it will change your life.”

It certainly did for Irene White, a former “lounge lizard” who is now motivating others, including her husband Jim, to get involved in Daphnee’s classes.

Realising she had become rather sedentary in retirement, Irene took a class and is now reaping the physical and spiritual benefits.

“I don’t ache as much, I’m nimbler and I can do a lot more without hurting,” she said. “I was even jumping around on stage dressed up as a scarecrow at the Treble Clef’s recent performance and I did it without an ache.”

Irene also encouraged her fellow home owners to continue meeting for exercise when Daphnee was away on holidays.

Claire does both of Daphnee’s classes each week as well as yoga, walking and helping with community events.

“I love the sessions with Daphnee, she’s one of those people that you take to straight away, she’s always cheerful.

“I think anybody who goes to the classes finds them of benefit. There’s nothing stressful about them, it’s just good healthy exercise.”

Another active home owner is Pam Sanders who does Zumba Gold, two sessions of lawn bowls, aqua aerobics and lots of walking each week.

“There’s plenty of things to do here – I think it’s good for your health and well-being to get out and mix with people and have fun,” she said.

“I have rheumatoid arthritis, so I like to keep things moving and keeping my muscles healthy.

“I’ve been doing Zumba Gold for 10 years. I love the music and the exercise. You’ve got to try to remember the steps so that helps your mental capacity too.” ■ 35

Ian and Susan Snare are starting a new chapter at Halcyon Glades

the downsizing dream DOWNSIZING IS DIFFERENT for everyone. For Halcyon Glades home owners Ian and Susan Snare, it was three massive garage sales, time living apart, and an epic 2,200km move to sub-tropical Brisbane from chilly Tasmania.

Although it was a challenging proposition, the recently retired couple was ready to go.

“We had a large family home on a large block with a huge vegie

garden and an expansive work shed,” Ian said.

“There was an enormous amount of stuff to offload and we had to let go of things we’d had for 30 or 40 years, so it was a massive downsizing experience.

“It was making all the decisions we needed to make and letting go that was difficult,” she said.

“It was cathartic and necessary to get rid of things.”

“Moving from Tasmania to Queensland meant we were limited in what we could bring; we had to make very clear decisions.

As is sometimes the case, not everything went to script, with their Tasmanian property taking longer to sell than expected.

Ian stayed behind in Tasmania to finalise the sale while Susan headed to the Sunshine State and closer to two of their sons and her parents.

And that meant Susan was well settled when Ian finally arrived four months later in February this year.

Ian, who had some early reservations about the lifestyle community model, initially struggled to settle in.

“Sue had already made a few connections and I had no connections, so I felt like I was behind the eight ball,” he said.

He is a member of the men’s singing group, goes bike riding with other home owners and swims regularly.

At home, Ian indulges in his love of gardening by propagating plants in their courtyard, and he also tends to some of the community’s gardens.

“I just love the place and Susan and I have made many new friends in this short time.” he said.

“We’ve been fortunate to meet a group of people who have made us feel very welcome.”

Susan has joined the quilter’s group and taken up aqua aerobics, something she wouldn’t have done in suburbia.

“The benefits of downsizing are great. It’s a chance to get involved in new things,” she said.

“I’ve talked with other men in the community and many have gone through a similar thing. I think women are more adaptable.

“We now have more freedom to relax and we see ourselves as being able to go caravanning or on holidays because we’re not tied to the house and garden. It’s also great to spend time with our family up here. The end result has been good and we’re glad we did it.”

“It was a long transition. And then, all of a sudden, it came together for me.

Ian said he believed it was wise to start their new chapter as soon as possible after retiring.

“One of my concerns had been that people would be on our doorstep all the time. That’s far from the truth, because it’s a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and you always have the privacy of your own home.”

“We have done this early because we didn’t want to make another big move in another 10 years,” he said. “It’s all that I wanted it to be.

I look back at my objections and see that they were unfounded.

“I wondered what I was going to do without my big vegie garden and work shed.

These days, Ian is involved in various aspects of community life.

“You’re free to do – or not to do – whatever you want, and I like that freedom.” ■

HALCYON HAS NOTCHED up a winning double after taking out two prestigious development and construction industry awards for its lifestyle communities on the same day.

It is the seventh time that a Halcyon community has earned a Seniors Living title from the peak development industry body; with Parks, Waters (three), Landing, and Vision by Halcyon all previous winners.

Halcyon Lakeside at Bli Bli won Queensland’s Best Seniors Living at the 2018 UDIA Qld Awards for Excellence while Halcyon Glades at Caboolture north picked up the Housing Industry Association (HIA) of Queensland’s accolade for Specialised Housing.

Not to be outdone, Halcyon Glades’ win came after Halcyon entered the HIA Queensland Housing Awards for the first time.
