The hajj is a five-day religious pilgrimage to Mecca and nearby holy sites in Saudi Arabia that all Muslims who are physically and financially able must undertake at least once in their lifetimes. It is one of Islam's five pillars, or obligations, along with professing faith in one God and Mohammed as his prophet, praying, charitable giving, and fasting during Ramadan.

The hajj occurs only once a year, in the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar; pilgrimages to Mecca at other times of the year are welcome but do not count toward the hajj.
