Haile Hughes Portfolio
Hello, my name is Haile Hughes, and I am enrolled in a five-year NAAB accredited Bachelor of Architecture Program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Over the years, high school and college have taught me various skills, such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Rhino.
I’ve worked on various solo and group projects, which have improved my ability to adapt to any situation. I would like to highlight five projects that will demonstrate what I have learned and how I plan to apply it in my pursuit of architecture.

Process: Design 2, 1st year 2020, Visitor Center
The semester began with a case study on Two Houses By The Lake by Gaudenzi Arquitetura in Brazil. For the Final Project, we designed a Visitor Center for the site. The diagram to the right depicts the strating point of the process for the Final Design. This diagram represents the flow/circulation of the plan

Exploration: Design 4, 2nd year 2021, Music Pavilion Ruin
The goal of the project was to design a structure to shield the ruins of the Strawberry Mansion Music Pavilion. Working within the following limitations such as the foundations of the struccture may only extend 10’ beyond the existing ruin’s border, and it cannot touch the existing ruin. The objective was to create a meaningful space that members of the community would want to visit.

As a result of the ongoing pandemic, we used Jenga pieces as a design tool. This project forced the exploration of using Jenga blocks for the structure of the project. It was challenging and required several attempts to determine how to make the Jenga blocks structurally sound. The final design encompassed a Jenga block arch with apertures that allow light to shine, creating an area visitors would want to explore.

Conception: Design 5, 3rd year 2021, Francisville Cultural Expo
The Francisville Cultural Expo design is based on the concept of Sustain. Sustain means to cause to continue or be prolonged for an extended period or without interruption. Looking at the design from the plan view, you will notice the infinity-sign-like roof represents the need to “prolong” the neighborhood’s culture. But as you look from a different perspective, that infinity sign will turn into a Mobius Strip. The Mobius Strip, a one-sided continuous surface that connects with itself, represents the “without interruption” in the sustain concept. These two aspects of the idea help create two courtyards used as a green space for the structure.

Collaboration: Design 6, 3rd year 2022, Cyrosphere Research Center
As part of a group project, we had one month to collaborate and design a cryosphere research center in Greenland, an extreme climate.
Working as a team, we split our research into different topics that allowed us to determine how our design could survive in the harsh climate of Greenland. Once we compiled our research, we collaborated on design concepts and ideas. We distributed the work load equally among all team members. The project was modelbased, which resulted in a 6’ tall model.

Culmination: Design 8, 4th year 2023, School of Dance
Process, Exploration, Conception, and Collaboration all came together in Culmination for this project. In Design 8, we had a group project that lasted the entire semester. We utilized Autodesk BIM360 and Revit to ensure a smooth collaboration with our groupmates. The main goal for this project was to create a “School of Dance” on our campus. We researched precedents and conducted site analysis to help inform our design. We agreed to split up the work to increase workflow. This project highlighted the importance of working together as a team.
