LECTURE 1 REINFORCEMENT FRAMES (R.C)

Components of an r.c frame members 

Main beam – span between columns and transfer live and imposed loads placed upon them to the columns.



Secondary beams – span between and transfer loadings to the main beams. Primary function is to reduce span of floors or roof.



Tie beams – internal beams spanning between columns at right angles to the direction of main beams and have same function as main beam.



Edge beams – as tie beams but spanning between external columns.



Columns – vertical members which carry loads transferred by beams to foundations.

Components of an r.c frame members 

Foundations – bases to which columns are connected and serve to transfer loadings to suitable load-bearing subsoil.



Floors – may/may not be an integral part of frame, provide platform on which people can circulate. Also required to provide specific fire resistance together with sound and thermal insulation.





Roof – provide weather-covering to uppermost floor Walls – envelope of structure, provides resistance to elements, entry of daylight, natural ventilation, fire resistance, thermal and sound insulation.
