‫يقدم (حافظ غاليري) معرضا فرديا للفنان السعودي املعاصر‬ .‫وأحد أهم املؤثرين في الجيل الحديدمن الفنانيني السعوديني‬ ‫" وهو دراسة بحثية للتغييرات التي طرأت على‬١١ ‫"شعبة‬ ‫املفاهيم في العالم العربي وتأثيرها على سلوكيات الشعوب‬ ‫ حيث تصور االعمال الفنية نظرة الشعشعي‬،‫في اآلونة االخيرة‬ ‫ في محاولة‬،‫للتناقضات واملخاوف وحتى الرغبات لدى األفراد‬ .‫الستفزاز املتلقي وطرح تساؤالت وجودية وبسيطة في آن واحد‬ Hafez Gallery proudly presents "Section 11" a solo exhibition by a prominent figure of the contemporary Saudi art scene and an influential figure to new generation of Saudi artists. "Section 11" is a study on the changes in definitions & beliefs in The Arab World and its effect on people's behavior, as the artworks depicts Al Shashai's perspective over individual's contradictions, fears and desires as an attempt to provoke the audience & ask exisistential yet simple questions.

Introduction

Section 11 highlights several new installations

by Jeddah-based contemporary artist Rashed Al Shashai. Known for whimsically adapting commonplace forms in artworks that reveal the minutiae of everyday life, Al Shashai offers resounding observations on the political and societal shifts that are currently transforming spirituality and culture in the Arab world.

Seeking to create a space that will encourage the viewer to reassess such weighty subject matter, the exhibition’s underlying concept is inspired by Al Shashai’s experience as a cultural practitioner and arts educator in Saudi Arabia, and the instructional approach that is often at the center of his work in the local art scene. Evident in each featured installation is the artist’s primary objective: to guide audiences through the process of identifying the causes and effects of particular issues in order to perceive how we might redirect society’s precarious path. In this regard, the art object becomes a starting point for cognition.

In Peep, Peep (2014), for example, the popular cartoon characters Wile E. Coyote and The Roadrunner are depicted against elaborately painted light boxes built in the shape of a mashrabiya. Behind the intricate ornamentation of the screen is a backdrop of a red-sand desert landscape. The characters are positioned face to face on the interior side of the architectural feature, creating the illusion of a secluded space in which the viewer is also an occupant. The usually antagonistic protagonists are brought together as a representation of a continuous state of discord and the need for religious tolerance, prompting a consideration of the ideological divisions that continue to keep communities from coming together under the umbrella of a core system of shared principles, particularly among Muslims.

to be served. The appropriated object evokes the domestic and religious settings of Muslim societies, where the decorative arts often function as expressions of piety in visual culture while also serving utilitarian purposes. Although the title of the work is playful, its message is comparatively bleak, as it presents a metaphor for the recent political conflicts that have led to the fragmentation of the region.

In Exit (2014), Al Shashai presents an emphatic denunciation of religious extremism with a simple graphic. Altering a green exit sign that is normally found in public places, the artist appropriates a universal symbol to comment on the isolationist mentality of religious militancy.

Near a picture of a door is a figure running towards a fire with a cocked gun, suggesting an exit from society into dangerous ideological territory.

Summarizing the exhibition’s central theme is the installation Industrial Nest (2014) in which coffee cups are stacked in columns to form a structure resembling an oversized birdcage. Atop the work is a green dome, a feature that calls to mind the socio-religious milieu and cultural patrimony of the Arab world while the metal dishes signal domesticity and tradition. The imagery of the installation can be read in several ways. While the enclosed space might be viewed from the outside as a place of confinement, from an inside vantage point, the surrounding columns seem to provide shelter. Leaving the work’s meaning open to interpretation, Al Shashai allows viewers to arrive at their own conclusions, emphasizing that concepts of tradition, culture, and spirituality are essentially based on perceptions although shared. Like the stacked shiny metal objects that form the skeleton of the installation, society can be understood as an accumulation of multiple facets.

‫�شعبة ‪:١١‬‬ ‫يقدم لنا الفنان را�صد ال�صع�صعي جتربه بحثية بني الوثيقة واملمار�صة الفكرية كمعلم‬ ‫وباحث ‪ ،‬وتتجه التجربة يف م�صروعة اجلديد (ال�صعبة ‪ )١١‬والتي هي ا�صم الف�صل‬ ‫او ال�صعبة التي يدر�ض فيها كمعلم ايل دور الفنان كو�صيط بني الطالب كمتلقي وبني‬ ‫املناهج كم�صدر تنويري‪ ،‬واإذا اآمنا ان التعليم هوة الوحدة الأهم يف التوجه اىل‬ ‫جمتمعات مدنيه وحظريه ياأتي دور هذا امل�صروع الفني (ال�صعبة ‪ ) ١١‬وبالتحديد‬ ‫م�صروع توثيق قرية مند�صة كجهد تدويني يليق بهذه احلالة ال�صخمة والتي تتغذى‬ ‫يوم ًّيا باجلدل وال�صتقطابات منذ عقود ‪.‬‬

‫قرية مند�شة‪:‬‬ ‫تقع قرية مند�صة على بعد ‪ 3٠‬كلومرتا من مكة ‪ ،‬وهي القرية التي بداء فيها جهيمان‬ ‫العتيبي قائد حادثة احلرم املكي ال�صهرية ب�صل�صلة من الدرو�ض التعليمية ون�صب‬ ‫خيمته واتخذ منها مكان ًا للتخطيط حلادثة احلرم املكي ويذكر ان كثري ًا من اأهايل‬ ‫القرية تاأثروا به و بتعاليمه يف تلك الفرتة والتي ا�صماها بع�ض الباحثني والكتاب يف‬ ‫ذلك الوقت (باحلركة اجلهيمانية ) والذي يعتقد الكثري ان هذه احلركة اأف�صت‬ ‫بعد ذلك اىل ولدة القاعدة‪،‬‬ ‫وتاأتي اأهمية هذا امل�صروع الفني للفنان را�صد ال�صع�صعي كوثيقة بحثية تربط التعليم‬ ‫وفكرة وجود احلراك ال�صحوي املختبئ خلف التعليم او املند�ض والذي اأتت منه‬ ‫كلمة (مند�صة)ا�صم القرية والذي يعني الختباء كمااإن جز ًءا من ال�صعف التدويني‬ ‫يف حالتنا ال�صعودية والعربية عموما يف ذلك الوقت يعود بال ّ‬ ‫�صك اإىل �صيا�صة التعتيم‬ ‫الإعالمي الذي يكتنف اأحداثنا وجمرياتنا الكربى‪ ،‬كاأحداث احلرم املكي ً‬ ‫مثال يف‬ ‫عام ‪ ١979‬لو اأخذناها كمثال‪ .‬ا ّإل اأنه برتك امل�صوؤولية دائ ًما على املنظومة الرقابية‪،‬‬ ‫فاإن ذلك من �صاأنه اإخراج املهتمني املعنيني بطريقة فيها تزييف كبري للوعي‬ ‫وامل�صوؤولية؛ فاملثقف والفنان اأو الباحث عليه م�صوؤولية كبرية يف ذلك التدوين‪ .‬ا ّإل‬ ‫اأن امل�صكلة الكربى‪ ،‬والتي تبينت موؤخ ًرا‪ ،‬لي�صت فقط يف اإحجام املعنيني والباحثني‬ ‫عن تدوين تلك الأحداث وتناولها‪ ،‬واإمنا هناك اأزمة حقيقية يف فهمها ا ًأول‪ ،‬وفهم‬ ‫ظروفها وتداعياتها وحيثياتها التف�صيلية التي تف�صر الكثري من ظروف اأدائها ‪.‬‬

‫‪SECTION 11‬‬ ‫‪In this special project, Rashed Al Shashai’s‬‬ ‫‪approach stands between documentation‬‬ ‫‪and intellectual practice, both as a teacher‬‬ ‫’‪and a researcher. The name, ‘Section 11‬‬ ‫‪derives from the class that Rashid teaches‬‬ ‫‪in Al Faisalia School for gifted children,‬‬ ‫‪and explores the artists role as a mediator‬‬ ‫‪between the student as a recipient of‬‬ ‫‪education and the curriculum as a source‬‬ ‫‪of enlightenment; and if we believe that‬‬ ‫‪education is the most important foundation‬‬ ‫‪of civic and cultural society, then the role‬‬ ‫‪of this ‘Section 11’ exhibition, specifically‬‬ ‫‪the documentation of the recent history‬‬ ‫‪of Mondassah Village, contributes to the‬‬ ‫‪ongoing polarized discussion around‬‬ ‫‪education which has emerged over the past‬‬ ‫‪few decades.‬‬ ‫‪MONDASSAH VILLAGE‬‬ ‫‪Located 35km from Makkah, Mondassah‬‬ ‫‪(literally meaning ‘Hidden’) Village, was‬‬ ‫‪the place where Juhayman Al-Otaybi, the‬‬ ‫‪leader of the famous siege of Makkah in‬‬ ‫‪1979, started his movement and planned the‬‬ ‫‪siege. It has been reported that many of the‬‬ ‫‪villagers became influenced by his ideology‬‬ ‫‪at that time, leading to what scholars called‬‬ ‫‪the ‘Juhaymaniya movement’, and which‬‬ ‫‪many believe it to be the precursor to the‬‬ ‫‪group that became Al-Qaeda.‬‬ ‫‪‘Section 11’ can be understood as a research‬‬ ‫‪project that reveals the existence of the‬‬ ‫‪‘Sahwah’ or religious awakening as a hidden‬‬ ‫‪layer behind the official Saudi school‬‬ ‫‪curriculum-‘Mondassa’ Village standing for‬‬ ‫‪‘Hidden’ Village. This research is especially‬‬ ‫‪important given the lack of documentation‬‬ ‫‪in the Saudi and Arab pre-internet‬‬ ‫‪landscape, where media blackout policy‬‬ ‫‪surrounded all major events including the‬‬

radicalism of Juhayman and the image he was portraying, and became an opposition and new movement known as Al Jamia.

Many of the scholars believed that the Juhayman incident paved the way for a new and more conservative ideology, one which led to the rise of extremism in Saudi society. Not withstanding that this change could have been the result of a more complex layering of influences including a porous education system vulnerable to extremist ideology. However, what Juhayman actually achieved through the Makkah siege alongside other social and political influences, was to popularize and disseminate the new Sahwa ideology as an alternative to the existing Muslim Brotherhood creed and the previous Salafi ideology.

The reason behind the analysts conviction as to the Makkah incident’s effect of Saudi society, was the speed and volume of distribution of emotionally manipulative materials and activities, including folkloric songs, literature and summer camps, that were used to disseminate this ideology; as well as the resemblance between the Sahwa and the Muslim Brotherhood.

One of the clear aims of the Sahawi teachings, which hid behind the official school curriculum, supported by a complicit regional and international status quo and through the revival of heroic Islamic tales and history, was to encourage combat and Jihad against the foreign infidels outside the Kingdom.

Young people were targeted and invited to join training camps, in which they were encouraged to re-enacted Islamic Jihadist history, in order to fuel the growing Afghani war with young fighters. One could argue that had Juhayman been active a few months later, he would have directed his energy towards the Afghani stage.

incident at the Holy Mosque in Makkah in 1979. Against this backdrop of censorship which was so prevalent during such a crucial time in Saudi recent history, and the available information at that time which camouflaged responsibility and awareness, the artist becomes an important witness to the truth. The challenge of this particular history, which is becoming increasingly relevant, visible and indeed urgent, is both the obstacles to effective research and the lack of understanding around the circumstances of its formation.

EDUCATION BETWEEN SAHWAISM & FUTURISM In the beginning, pure Salafism was the main path of the religious awakening movement, even the Juhayman group, in Saudi Arabia. A new Salafism emerged out of this context and began to try and limit the expansion of Sahwa, which became active at the end of the 60s. This was visible in the presence of both the Muslim Brotherhood and their succesors, the Soroories; these two groups were among the most active religious groups in Saudi Universities at that time. The focus of the old Salafist group, which was originally focused on the interpretation and distribution of traditional Salafi doctrine, became more critical in the field of the society. They began to denounce the Sahwa Sheikhs by highlighting their understanding of Sharia law and their shift to politics. This shift the spiritual to the political was articulated in this famous quote by a Sheikh Al-Albani, considered the godfather of the group, “it is political to leave politics”.

After many defections in the Sahwa group, a violent and radical group emerged under Juhayman’s charismatic and radical leadership; together they traveled to remote areas of the desert and villages like the aforementioned Mondassa, to prepare for their assault on Makkah. Some cracks appeared in the group but their new ideology remained in tact. Some of these disillusioned groups denounced the

of religious ideologies through education, one should not give too much weight to Juhayman’s influence on society in the context of the rise of extremism in Saudi Arabia. Preachers and scholars have actively encouraged the Saudi youth to follow the Jihadi path, unaware of the context behind their decisions and unaccountable for their actions. This phenomenon in society could not have passed without creating the extremist intellectual foundation that allows these scholars and preachers to influence their society without fear.

In this exhibition, Rashid guides us towards deep yet hopeful changes to the Saudi landscape. Education in this particular exhibition is the channel with which the various stories unfold. It is worthy to say that we have to dig to the roots of our historical and collective narrative in order to reach a truth that can be built upon, and one that acknowledges the destructive and irreversible consequences of fundamentalism and violence. Lost energies that could have been redirected towards enlightenment, and a more honest cultural existence. It is essential to understand the needs and desires of future generations before one can begin to dream the future, leaving behind any project with undesirable social, and cultural consequences.

Saudi artist Rashed Al Shashai utilises found objects and appropriated imagery as conceptual means of identifying the signs of the everyday, creating what he describes as a ‘semantic field’ through which philosophical questions, primarily the purpose of human existence and the functions of society, can be explored. With playful forms, Al Shashai seeks to engage viewers with the signifiers of the mundane in order to facilitate a consideration of what might otherwise create tension, such as the omnipresence of media, a global descent into superficiality, and the growing epidemic of apathy that has come to define modern life.

Born in Al Baha, Saudi Arabia, in 1977, Rashed Al Shashai holds a Master of Visual Arts degree and is a prominent figure of the contemporary Saudi art scene. As a conceptual artist and arts educator, Al Shashai has been influential to a new generation of Saudi talent while also nurturing local artistic practices as a founding member of the Saudi Arabia Fine Arts society and the Art Education Society.

In 2009, he established the Tasami Centre for Visual Arts, an independent space that supports cutting-edge art in the Kingdom, and was the organization’s director until 2013.

Al Shashai has widely exhibited in the Arab Gulf and abroad at such venues and events as Art Dubai (2012); the Annual Exhibition of Emirates Fines Arts Society, Sharjah Art Museum (2012); and the Ostraka International Forum, Sharm Al Sheikh.

He is the recipient of numerous awards, including First Prize from the Media Art Show, Riyadh (2011).
