New UK contract for supply of Factor VIII products

Over the last decade Scotland has joined with the rest of the UK in contracting for the supply of recombinant Factor VIII products. This process continues to yield competitive prices, allowing us to meet the increasing demand for Factor VIII (around 5% year on year) with minimal increase in expense to NHS Scotland. A new round of contracting has recently been completed and will come into effect from February 2018, when the main products we will use are Advate®, RefactoAF® and NovoEight®. In order to meet the contractual volume commitments a minority of individuals will need to switch from their current Factor VIII to one of the above, all of which are recombinant products with an excellent safety record. Helixate NexGen® will no longer be available in the UK and individuals will be contacted to switch to another Factor VIII treatment. If you are switching your Factor VIII treatment you should use up all your old Factor VIII stock prior to switching, and you should not mix two different Factor VIII products in the same treatment.
