The Lowdown Welcome Welcome to the latest edition of our Lowdown newsletter where we will be sharing a range of updates from across the business. It’s been a busy and productive first half of the year, so there’s lots to share!

Firstly, we celebrate amazing milestones reached by two truly phenomenal colleagues, of whom it has been a pleasure sharing this time with. We have four new starters to introduce, and update you on even more academic success.

We’d also like to share that we are hosting a charity walking event in the upcoming weeks that we would love for you to join.

In this edition we’d also like to highlight a client and his amazing work with Hope House Children’s Hospice - climbing the highest mountain in Africa, and raising more than £2,000 for an amazing cause.

We look at the upcoming changes to Inheritance Tax in 2027 that may affect you and your loved ones. We also share the launch of the Wrexham Monopoly board, where you can find us, and other local landmarks in the Wrexham area.

Lastly, we share a thrilling update in regards to our sponsorship of Paralympian Nathan Maguire. Working together for another year as Nathan prepares to compete in the Commonwealth Games this year in Glasgow.

Anniversaries

Walking & Talking

We’ve had a few major anniversaries so far this year, and the team continues to grow.

Aimee has celebrated 5 years in the Hadlow Edwards team.

Aimee has been a wonderful colleague to work alongside from the minute she started in the office. She's got an infectious laugh and gets along with everyone; always bringing a smile to the work day.

Our in-house mortgage adviser, Jonathan Peatfield has completed a decade of service with us at Hadlow Edwards. A monumentous milestone that we are very proud of and we can’t wait to see what we can achieve in the next decade together.

The team here at Hadlow Edwards are walking the trail around Bulkeley Hill Wood on Saturday 5th September to raise funds for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital! The walk should last about an hour and after the first hill it is a fairly easy going walk for all.

Friends, family, and your loyal pup are also encouraged to join in! We will be finishing off the day with something to eat (our treat) and a fun game of skittles in The Bickerton Poacher pub garden.

Inheritance Tax: IS YOUR PENSION UNDER ATTACK?

The rules around Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Pension Death Benefits are changing quite significantly in April 2027. It’s important to really understand these rule changes and what it means for you and your loved ones.

We will look at a couple of key questions that clear up any doubts about what this means for your estate one day – and what you can do about it.

1) What are the current rules this tax year?

So, in a nutshell IHT is the tax your loved ones will pay on the estate you leave behind when you pass away IF your total wealth is over certain figures. Your estate is made up of all of your assets, including property (in the UK and abroad), cash in the bank, investments, shares, National Savings products and even personal items such as jewellery/cars. The BIG thing missing from this list …. Pension funds.

Each of us has a ‘Nil rate Band’ of £325,000 that we can leave to anyone tax free. If you have kids/grandkids and own your own home (and they are your beneficiaries) – we all have an extra Principal Residence Relief of £175,000. So £500,000 for individuals with family. A married couple enjoys £1m allowances in total.

ANY value left over £500,000 for a single person OR £1m when the second of a married couple passes away – is taxed at up to 40%.

2) What is changing in 2027?

Under the current rules your pension is not included within your estate should you pass away until - April 2027!

After next April – anyone passing away will see the value of any Defined Contribution Pension (where you usually get an annual statement showing you what your fund is worth and how it has performed) – added to their numbers.

This is simply a massive change. Many more people will be ‘caught’ in the over £500k (or for married couples over £1m) estate brackets – and your loved ones can expect your estate to see a bill from HMRC. “The Government estimates that 10,500 estates will have an Inheritance Tax liability next year - where this year they would not. Approximately 38,500

estates will pay more Inheritance Tax than would previously have been the case. The average Inheritance Tax liability is expected to increase by around £34,000 when pension assets are included in the value of the estate.” (Gov UK, 2026) 3) What can we do to protect your estate and the funds left over for your loved ones?

There are certain rules and allowances that can be used to maximise the amount you leave your loved ones, and minimise the amount of Inheritance Tax that they will face when receiving your assets from your estate.

Gifts and The 7-Year Rule (Gov UK, 2026): You can give away up to £3,000 worth of gifts each tax year completely tax-free. Larger gifts made while you are alive are generally free of IHT if you survive for 7 years after making the gift.

Some small gifts are also exempt from Inheritance Tax. Small Gifts and Annual Gifts Each tax year we are each allowed to gift £3000 to anyone – completely tax free. You can also gift a further £250 each year to as many people as you like … as long as they did not get the £3000!

Lump Sum Gifts You can give away as much as you wish as a lump sum in addition to the above, IF you live for 7 years thereafter, the gift will be exempt and outside of your estate. A lot of Grandparents/parents consider this, but sometimes leave this too late in their planning! You have to ‘stick around’ for this to work effectively.

These gifts are ‘one way streets’, once you make them the funds have gone.

There’s no Inheritance Tax to pay on any level of gifts between spouses or civil partners.

Setting up a family Trust You can gift into a Trust and keep more control of your capital AND choose beneficiaries at the outset – and change your mind as you go

along. So, maybe your own children now could be preferred, you could change this to the grandchildren perhaps in later life, as you wish. This is an area where specialist advice is a must.

Lots of options, and we help many clients with this area of their planning.

AGAIN – the ‘7 year rule’ applies.

Gifting from income – that you don’t need This is often overlooked – and is an excellent opportunity. IF you have income in excess of your needs (includes State Pensions, occupational pensions, most investment income and interest for example) you can gift your surplus away ENTIRELY TAX FREE. The ‘win’ here – is that the ‘7 year rule’ does NOT apply. How good is that?

Summary The allowances mentioned form only a small part of the different options available to those concerned about IHT. There are many opportunities available to reduce inheritance tax.

Therefore, taking professional advice based on your own individual circumstances is recommended.

It is crucial to understand what is changing and how we can help you combat these changes in a smart and calculated way. Through little but impactful adjustments, we can ease the burden of IHT for you in light of these changes.

Man VS Mountain The location: Mount Toubkal in Morocco. The person: Hadlow Edwards’ client Paul Green. The goal: raise funds for Hope House Children’s Hospice.

Paul Green, a long-standing client of Warren’s, recently travelled to North Africa to trek up Mount Toubkal with the aim of raising money for a charity close to his heart.

The team of brave volunteers started their trek up Mount Toubkal from the village of Imlil on 21st May. It took them five long days in total, with plenty of early mornings, the earliest being summit day on 24th May - up at 3.45am to start the final push in the dark at 5am.

an amazing achievement that pushed me physically, mentally and emotionally, introduced me to lifelong friends, left me feeling on top of the world, and together helped raise £30,000 for Hope House Children’s Hospice. A great adventure I would recommend to anyone.”

According to Claire Penney, Hope House’s Area Fundraiser, and the organiser of the trip,

“Paul was a real motivator and an excellent singer...” [and the] “incredible amount will go far in providing specialist care and support for local children with life‑threatening conditions and their families across North and Mid Wales, Shropshire and Cheshire helping them live their best life”.

Currently Paul has raised an amazing £2,340!

With many twists and turns the team had to adapt their route due to weather conditions and quickly learn to use equipment some of them had never experienced before, such as wearing crampons for walking in the snow. They safely returned to Imlil on 25th May. Paul and the team have achieved something truly special together. He says that “summiting Mount Toubkal was one of the most incredible experiences,

The official Wrexham Monopoly Board is now available online! The board celebrates the places, people and pride that make our city so special.

Created in partnership with This Is Wrexham, Wrexham AFC, Wrexham Lager and Hasbro, this unique edition brings Wrexham to life on the board, from iconic landmarks, to well-loved local businesses (including ours!). Best of all, every board sold helps support Nightingale House Hospice, providing vital care for patients and families across our community.

Sarah Povey, Corporate & Donor Relationships Manager at Nightingale House came down to the office to present us with our very own Monopoly Card, as well as take a few snaps of the staff and update us on what’s going on at Nightingale House. This was also a fun treat for Murphy, who had the chance to dress up as our very own Monopoly Man!
