ANZAC DAY HONOUR FOR HADLEIGH On April 27th Hadleigh Town Council will be co-hosting, along with the Britain-Australia Society Suffolk Branch, the 2014 ANZAC Day Commemoration Parade and Service. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and ANZAC Day - 25 April - is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War when Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition in 1915 that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Local links with the campaign are strong as the 5th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment was sent to Gallipoli to fight alongside the ANZACs and, within days of landing, fifteen Hadleigh men were killed on one day. Therefore, it is particularly fitting that this year’s commemoration will take place in Hadleigh. The 3pm service at St Mary’s, to which members of the public are invited, will be preceded by a march from the Babergh District Council car park on Bridge Street through the town led by service personnel from Wattisham Flying Station. After the service all members of the congregation are invited to tea and Anzac biscuits in the Town Hall. These sweet biscuits, popular in Australia and New Zealand, have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps as it has been claimed that they were sent by wives to soldiers abroad because the ingredients do not spoil easily and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation. (See page 14 for details of the day’s events)

The Hadleigh Show 2014 – Aidan’s got it covered and Angus helps plant a mighty oak. Every year, the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association (HFAA), organisers of the Hadleigh Show, run a competition amongst local schools, to select an original image for the cover of the show’s programme. This year, for the 175th Show cover, an amazing 220 entries were received from 8 local schools - Hintlesham & Chattisham, Elmsett, Whatfield, Kersey, Bildeston, Copdock, Hadleigh Community and St Mary’s Hadleigh. The competition brief was to come up with a cover design to reflect the theme of “Farm Machinery at the Hadleigh Show”. The judges were Andrew MacDonald, head teacher of Langham Primary School, Debbie Roblin, of Hintlesham Golf Club, and HFAA committee members Nicky Currie and Rebecca English. The four met at Hintlesham Golf Club for an enjoyable evening looking at all the entries. Julie Girling, HFAA School Liaison Officer, said “I was delighted to receive so many bright and colourful entries this year. The standard was incredibly high and I am grateful to all the children who participated and to the school staff and parents for their encouragement. The winning design truly reflects the changes in farm machinery over the Show’s 175 years.” The winner was Aidan Cook of Hintlesham and Chattisham Primary School (shown in photo with Head Teacher Mrs Justine Davies). His winning entry and also the top 30 entries will be on display in the Education tent at the Hadleigh Show on Saturday 17th May 2014. The Education tent will also feature contributions from local schools on the theme of “growing vegetables. The HFAA has also been looking at growing trees – in particular replacing the magnificent old oak which graced the showground at Holbecks Park for so many years. Sadly the oak tree recently died and needed to be felled. This was an opportunity to mark the 175th anniversary with planting the HFAA 175th Anniversary Oak Tree at the top of the showground. Present for the planting of the commemorative British Oak was HFAA President Emily Holden, Show Director Paul Gillies, partner Claire Abrey and their two sons Angus and new-born Archie. www.hadleighshow.co.uk

Kersey Mill Newsletter With summer fast approaching the team have been working hard to progress the building of the waterwheel gates that control the flow of water to the wheel. Once we have received the new buckets and they are installed, the waterwheel will then be capable of turning by water once more. The focus is also a month ahead on the very important National Mills Weekend 10th – 11th May when the mill will be open to visitors to show all the work that has been achieved in the past year thanks to our many volunteers who help us make what – at times – seems to be an endless list of ‘to do’ jobs. Gradually they are being tackled and ticked off the list one by one, including the insertion of new window sills. During the weekend lots of wind and water mills are open to the public. A date for your diary is 7th June. The Friends of Kersey Mill are holding a fundraising Summer Ball which will be held at The Venue Kersey Mill. This will be a fun memorable night for all. There will be an Auction and raffle, welcome drinks and tour of the Mill and grounds, 3 course gourmet meals, dancing to Supreme Sounds, black tie, 7pm till midnight. We do hope you will be able to come along and meet many of the people who have helped at the mill in so many different ways, everyone who attends will be helping with the restoration of the mill and will be able to see first-hand how things are proceeding. Tickets can be purchased by calling 01473 829317. Photograph is of Bill Griffiths helping with the installation of an oak transom that supports oak uprights which in turn hold the runners and the gate racks, installing the racks and making the gates we will be reporting on next month when hopefully the uprights will be in. What a difference a month makes, with the glorious weather we have recently had we have been able to dry out a little! We have been able to throw open the front doors and let the sun shine through to air out and blow the cobwebs away. The wildlife seem to be enjoying the warmer weather too, ducks have paired up and started nesting, we are hoping the swans that successfully raised seven cygnets last summer decide to nest on our banks again this year, the kestrels are back to their nesting box that is at the top of the mill under the locum, and the beautiful vibrant blue kingfishers that normally flash by at an amazing speed are pleasing to the eye! If only you could photograph it! Mr Otter too has recently been seen further down the river towards Cosford Bridge. Let’s hope the fine weather stays with us so we can push forward with the exterior painting, anyone with a brush and a spare hour or two, and has a good head for heights would be very welcome.

New Bereavement Group Lesley and Jane have started a Self Help Bereavement Group for anyone who our next meeting is on has lost either husband or wife. We meet and monthly Hadleigh at 10am. Monday 7th April at Le Petit Paris in Maiden Way, Anyone interested would be most welcome to join us. Telephone 822361 for further information.

Howard with Andrew at Ainger Holbrow Dear Readers: as you cast your eyes over my jottings the hour will have sprung forward. I hope that we will all feel brighter with lighter evenings and better weather. This month I am pictured brandishing a wrench with Andrew Breitsprecher at the garage Ainger Holbrow at 115 High Street (Tel. 01473 823286) where Andrew is the principal. My love of motor cars is well known and I have been hither and thither for servicing. Andrew now looks after my cars; he does so very well and takes great care in whatever he is doing. It is such a convenient service – why not pay Andrew a visit. Did you guess where I was in the March picture? In fact, I was about to play the piano on Board Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 amidst the North Atlantic one November day. QM2 is now ten years old and I was so excited to be able to spend time on board.Passenger ships have always held a fascination for me. When I was small, I well remember Grandpa pointing out to me in the Sunday Express the sailing times of passenger ships that appeared there. A by-gone era. I recently saw a television programme that was based on the last voyage of Queen Elizabeth 2 under the Cunard flag. The QE2 was the last ship of consequence to have been built in Britain. You will remember from my Column that I went to Southampton to see QE2 when she sailed for the last time on 11 November 2008. I was fortunate enough to have travelled on QE2 many times and the programme brought back happy memories. I have had various enquiries about the well being of Frank and Maria who seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when they were shot in the High Street just after Christmas. One lady who telephoned wondered if those that had been injured were her “Clean Easy Representatives as she had not seen them for some time! I can say with confidence that they were not. So often titles to land that are offered are not as one might have hoped. The Seller doesn’t have rights of access; some of the land that the Seller is selling is owned by someone else. It needs a weather eye to spot all the different problems, problems that you do not wish to acquire. I have been handling all sorts of conveyancing transactions as a Solicitor for some 29 years – I do not believe that there is any one else in Hadleigh who can say advantage that! Do take of the service that my firm can provide. Don’t forget that we can attend to your Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Last month I discovered brownies are not only little square chocolate cakes when Maggie (my human “mum) and Dawn took me to meet the 1st Great Horkesley Unit. The children gave us bedding and food for the animals as part of the Community section of their Girlguiding Uk Centenary Challenge. The girls were pleased to see us and after a chat about SESAW we had our photos taken with several of them including Izzy Jacobs. We have many new arrivals including ten year old Lasa Apsos, Duchess and Donnie. Sadly their owner died but they are now both fully MOT’ed and ready for a loving home. We also have six cats including, Luna and Dumbledore, that came in together, also due to a bereavement. Young Ralphie, a feisty little terrier, needs a special home with experienced owners who have plenty of love, time and patience for him. Finally, please can the gentleman from Sudbury come back for William, a handsome four year old black cat as no one else wants him? Many of you donate items which we really appreciate but others are not so kind. Recently a car load of rubbish and several unsavory mattresses were left at SESAW. We are always grateful for good quality clothing, bric-a-brac, furnishings etc but damaged, incomplete or stained things are useless. We have to pay for our refuse collection so to leave unsalable items actually costs us money that should be spent on the animals. Our quiz night has been postponed but you can visit the SESAW stand at the Pet and Poultry Show at Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer, IP7 6HX, on Saturday 5th April between 10am and 4pm. We will bring some cute SESAW animals, there will be a barbeque and you might meet me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP. Guests Eat Puddings for Suffolk Family Carers Last night the sweet-toothed population of Suffolk gathered in Ipswich to help raise money for a local, charitable appeal launched by Suffolk Family Carers. Hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, based at Upper Brook Street, in Ipswich, decided to put their fundraising experience together with the dessert making skills of the culinary students at New Suffolk College, to create an indulgence evening to remember. The aim was to raise as much money as Guests queing for their desserts possible for the charity’s ‘8 Days a Week Appeal’, where they are trying to raise £525,000 to buy a Mobile Family Carers Centre to reach Family Carers in Suffolk. On the night guests packed into Shelley’s Restaurant and tucked into a delicious main course, followed by a huge array of delicious homemade puddings, accompanied with an ‘all you can eat policy’. Desserts included everything from the classic sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownies, through to beetroot pie and lime posset. The charity Pudding Club event raised over £740.00 for the charity, through ticket sales, donations and a charity raffle, which was held on the night. Karen Finch, The Hearing Care Centre MD said, “I can’t believe that this is our sixth Pudding Club evening and demand grows more and more each time we do them. The event has been such a resounding success and I must thank everybody who supported us. I think everyone who attended ate around 2 weeks-worth of calories in one night, but it’s worth it for the tremendous amount of money we have raised!” Graham Bickers, President of Ipswich East Rotary Club was also presented with a prize and certificate for successfully eating the most puddings, which totalled 17!

Hadleigh Bridge Club We welcomed 4 new members to our Monday night Duplicate Bridge Club last month. Prior to our Tuesday afternoon Chicago session, we have started a 1 hour session for those wishing to develop their skills. Three people starting on this 'training' with us last month and we hope that they will soon move on to play at either or both of our club meetings. For those who would like to come to these, it would be preferred that they have at least a rudimentary understanding of the game but may not necessarily feel confident to play competitively. Please see our web site for contact information. New members are always welcome to either Monday evenings or Tuesday afternoons. Further details can be found on our web site at hadleighbridgeclub.co.uk

Stop Living In Fear – Free Yourself From Anxiety Anxiety is something we all face from time to time, but how we respond to that anxiety, and what happens next, can have a dramatic effect on the quality of our lives. Anxiety takes many forms; sometimes it’s a reaction to a past event or in anticipation of some real or imagined future event; sometimes anxiety becomes a full blown phobia of spiders, flying, driving or something you would rather not tell other people about. Whatever the triggers, and whatever the symptoms, excessive anxiety always operates through the same psychological mechanisms, this means that they can all be successfully treated with the right combination of specially developed techniques. When Good Anxiety Goes Bad Anxiety is an integral part of an entirely natural and very useful threat response called the Orientation Response (Fight Or Flight), which is fired by the amygdala - a small area of the brain dedicated to spotting threats in our environment. The Orientation Response is supposed to be fired in any situation that may pose a threat to your wellbeing. When fired, it heightens your senses and allows you to make a quick decision to investigate further, defend yourself or escape. It also give you a shot of adrenaline, which speeds up your physiology to do enable you to take the latter options more effectively. Inappropriate anxiety, whether it’s a specific phobia or of the more general kind, is the result of a misfiring Orientation Response, and the reason it is often so hard to control is because the amygdala fires so quickly - long before there is time for conscious logical thought. Good News For Anxiety Sufferers Through the use of hypnosis, the amygdala can be re-trained to understand that the previously perceived threat is not really a threat, and that there is no need for alarm. If you find yourself getting excessively anxious, far too frequently, or in situations where you know this is an over reaction, I have some good news for you - this is not something you have to put up with. I use a combination of hypnosis, guided imagery and NLP techniques to help to neutralise traumatic and unhelpful responses, and to replace them with more helpful states of mind – sometimes this only requires a single session! If you would like to address the issues that have been bothering you call me now on 07967 473691 – I’m happy to talk to you about any aspect of it with no obligation to book a session, so you have nothing to lose except your anxiety. New classes arriving after Easter! Children across Suffolk are currently enjoying their journey with Puddle Ducks which is a baby, toddler and pre-school swim school delivered in a variety of lovely warm pools. Children can have lessons from a few days to 4 years old and have fun while they learn to swim in a safe, encouraging environment. Puddle Ducks classes, which last 30 minutes, will teach activities including swimming, submersion, floating, songs and games. Each session will incorporate rhyme, music and movement with songs that have been written by professional musicians. Although fun is at their heart, Puddle Ducks classes are about much more than this. The classes revolve around bonding and play where children don’t realise they’re learning to swim and are acquiring skills that could save their lives. Franchisee, Claire, says “I believe that swimming is a skill that all children should be taught from an early age. It’s fun, helps them interact with other children and encourages them to lead a healthy life style. 1 in 3 children leave primary school unable to swim and 1 in 6 parents never take their child swimming*, and we’re on a mission to change that, starting right here in Suffolk!” Due to popularity, new classes have been added at Birch Farm on a Monday and Sunday afternoon, to start after the Easter break. Please visit our website www.puddleducks.com/suffolk to find out more information on times and prices or give us a call on 01473 356222 to have a chat. www.puddleducks.com/suffolk *Source: Amateur Swimming Association

Courtyard Cakes – Easter Range The Bridge Project Sudbury goes from strength to strength with its Courtyard Cakes range. Last year I visited the charming Courtyard Café at 20 Gainsborough Street, Sudbury. The Café is the business end of Sudbury’s Bridge Project charity, started by Anesta Newson MBE way back in 1995, which provides real-life work experience and practical training for adults with a range of learning disabilities. Mark Sinfield, Café Manager, explains – “In October last year we thought we would develop a small Christmas range to help raise funds. It was much more popular than we originally thought and we took nearly £850 worth of orders for cakes, puddings, mince pies and sausage rolls. Following on from that we are selling Simnel Cakes for Easter. These are home-made and decorated by Jenny Burge and Alyson Tampion, our cooks. The students work with Jenny and Alyson, weighing ingredients and helping with preparation and the all important washing up!” To order please contact The Bridge Project on 01787 313691 or email Deborah.thomas@thebridgeproject.co.uk.

Come C ome on in, the water’s water’s lovely! Join our family of Puddle Ducks and pre-school enjoy baby and pr e-school swimming with the most caring and highly-trained teachers around.

SKy Watch Opposition of Mars April the 8th marks the day that Mars comes to opposition in our skies and for 1 week either side of this date the red planet is closest to the Earth. The exact date for closet approach is April 14th when the red planet will be 57.4 million miles from Earth and will shine at magnitude -1.48 or equal to sirius, the brightest star in the sky. At this opposition the planet will be constellation of Virgo. Mars will be easily identifiable because of the fact it won't "twinkle" like regular stars and also the fact of its colour - blood red, hence why it was named after the god of war in Roman mythology. In fact the Romans held this god in high regard as Mars is the third highest deity in their order and they even named a month of the year after him - March. Before we move on to the term "opposition" here is a little fact file on Mars. Diameter:- 4221 miles or 53.2% of Earth diameter Mean surface temperature:- -23oc Distance from sun:- 1.52au Sidereal revolution period (year):- 687 days Sidereal rotation period (day):- 24.6 hours Moons:- 2 Phobos and Deimos both captured asteroids So what is opposition? Opposition is a phenomenon that can occur with any astronomical object as long as it has an orbit outside that of Earth's. Opposition literally means the chosen object (in this case Mars) is directly opposite the sun in the sky. So at sunrise Mars is setting and obviously the opposite is correct at sunset when Mars is rising into the sky. The perfect way to show opposition is this graphic below which comes kindly from my friend Bob King. This shows Mars at opposition on nearly every 2 year time spell (this is how long it takes the Earth to catch up with it) Note also that although our orbit appears to be uniformly circular the orbit of Mars varies quite a bit, this is because Mars suffers a gravitational tug from its near neighbour Jupiter which distorts the orbital motion - very clearly. Observing Mars Mars is a fickle world and does not give up its details readily but at opposition you have your best chances of seeing surface and atmospheric detail. With a telescope of 3 inch aperture you will see some details on the planet, most prominent will be the north polar ice cap which is tilted towards Earth as Mars enters its northern hemisphere summer. You may also be able to make out a dark region on the planet called Syrtis Major, this dark area is caused by basaltic volcanic rock and takes on the appearance of a triangle in shape. Mars has a atmosphere of 95% carbon dioxide 2.7% nitrogen 1.6% Argon and 0.7& other elements. The atmosphere is dense enough though to allow clouds to form from time to time and dust storms can also rip up on the Planet that can cover the entire Planet. All of which can be seen in telescopes of 3 inches or more in aperture. So that is Mars at opposition. If you miss this one you will need to wait 2 years for the next in 2016. For those who need a sign post for the Planet the full Moon on the 14th April lies just below the Planet Mars a perfect situation to take advantage of the 2 celestial bodies together in one evening. Easter is soon to be upon us! With improved weather conditions our maintenance team have been doing their best to repair the damage from the wet weather, in particular, in gateways and near fences where my hairy hoofed friends have tended to congregate: rolling and harrowing and some re-seeding have been to the fore of late. In recent months I’ve been going on a bit about the need for Volunteers to enable us to help more Riders and after this I promise not to say more for a while but, for those of you who are thinking about joining us and might be unsure of your experience, let me tell you a bit about the training that is open to all Volunteers. As a new Volunteer (we usually refer to them as ‘Helpers’) you will join a riding Group where you will receive training from our Instructors and experienced Helpers on a weekly basis; this training is ongoing for our experienced Helpers too. Additionally we hold in-house training days which cover subjects such as good pony leading, side helping, grooming, Makaton signing (a form of communication for those not able to communicate through speech), experiencing the different movement of each of the ponies (practical riding session), games and activities to use during riding lessons etc. For example, one training day last year was on the subject of Autism in relation to riding, which was addressed by the mother of an Autistic child who is one of our Volunteers and who also helps at Hillside Special School. First Aid Training is compulsory for all of our Instructors but offered to all Volunteers if they wish, as there must be at least one First Aider present at each riding session. RDA East Region arranges annual training days to which all Group Volunteers are invited and they cover a variety of subjects relevant to all RDA Groups. Well, from what I have said I hope you can see that any new Volunteer is well supported when they join us and of course the training days also help as a means of socialising with other Helpers. As I have said before, if you have some spare time and our valuable work interests you do give us a call and come along to see us at The Centre. Perhaps you are newly retired or even between jobs; active voluntary work always looks good on a CV. Oh! Whilst I think of it, Paul Smith, Father of Millie, a Friday Rider, is running on 13th April in the London Marathon. If you would like to sponsor him please go to www.uk.virginmoneygiving.com and under ‘Make a Donation’ insert his name in the ‘Sponsor a Friend’ box and follow the instructions: Paul is hoping, with your help, to raise a record sum for The Shelley Centre for which we will all be grateful. Well, it’s been a busy day and now having written this I think it’s time to rest my circuits until tomorrow so ‘Click’ Shutdown, and to sleep. Pause for Thought Christmas is over; Easter Eggs have been on the shelves since before Christmas. Valentine’s Day has been and gone, so has Mothering Sunday. Some have had their birthdays and celebrated various anniversaries, for others they are still to come. All of these events are remembered with sending cards and presents, and celebrating. As we prepare to celebrate, yes, celebrate Jesus’ death on the Cross on Good Friday we can then be very joyful about His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. He conquered death and sits beside His Father in Heaven. Knowing that He died to take on the punishment for our sin gives us reason to celebrate and put our trust in Him. He holds the other end of the tether when we come to our wit’s end. Quietly, alone in our own homes, or together in a place of worship, we can pray and wait for the answers that we know will be best for us and for those who we pray for. Jean Chisholm

Hadleigh Physiotherapy welcomes Chartered Physiotherapist Rebecca Bayliss to join existing husband and wife team Charlotte & Will Dykes. The Physiotherapy practice based at 111 George Street has enjoyed a successful few months since officially opening its doors in November 2013. “We would like to thank all our clients to date for their support, positive feedback and wish Jim Wilding, running the London Marathon later this month every success. We would also like to thank the Royal British Legion for inviting us to come and talk at their March general meeting. Hadleigh Physiotherapy is pleased to welcome Chartered Physiotherapist Rebecca Bayliss to the team. Rebecca is currently completing her MSc in sports injury management and is a keen cyclist, runner and member of Hadleigh Hares. Rebecca also brings to the practice her ability to perform Acupuncture as a certified member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) What is Acupuncture & How Does It Work? Acupuncture is one of the many skills that can be used by Physiotherapists to help treat pain and inflammation. It is a form of traditional Chinese medicine dating back thousands of years which is now widely accepted within both the National Health Service and Private Practice. Physiotherapists base their treatments on scientific research and clinical evidence. Current literature has proven that acupuncture can reduce pain by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce natural pain relieving chemicals that help promote wellbeing. These endorphins and serotonin chemicals assist the body’s healing process and reduce its perception of pain allowing other treatments to aid recovery. Acupuncture can be combined with and assist any of the following treatment options: joint mobilisation and manipulation, sports rehabilitation, exercise therapy, muscle imbalance retraining, postural correction and ergonomic assessment. What Will Happen During Your Treatment? Acupuncture involves careful and gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on your body. Each condition must be assessed individually, but the effects of acupuncture can be significant after one session. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect, therefore a course of treatment is recommended for maximum benefit to be gained. A number of needles may be used during each treatment, and these are typically left in place for around 20 mins before being removed. What Does Acupuncture Feel Like? Acupuncture should not be painful. You may feel a slight scratch as the needle is inserted but this is much less than that of an injection. You may also feel sensations such as tingling, aching and warmth. Many people feel relaxed during the treatment. To discuss further or book an appointment, please call Hadleigh Physio on 07599959997 or email us at enquiries@hadleighphysio.co.uk

Tony Woodgate, Jos father will officially get the ride underway, which passes through Chelsworth - where Jo is buried. If you don't care to cycle but would still like to help - why not bake us a cake for the cake stall? Please come and join us, or visit the Help for Heroes stall and cake stall - our brave men and women may be preparing to withdraw from Afghanistan, but it is important that the Help for Heroes charity continues to raise much needed funds to continue the support of our wounded heroes. The Birds Wot Bike look forward to seeing you on the 6th April!

ChillOut Yoga In East Anglia There seems to be an assumption that to do yoga, you need to be able to touch your toes – but this really is not the case! Although yoga has its roots in India, it has become very popular in the UK in recent years. There are so many good things about yoga –the stretching that yoga offers gets the body moving in all directions - so on a physical level yoga helps to improve your strength and flexibility, prevents back pain and generally helps you feel good … and as breath-work is a large part of a yoga class, it improves your breathing capacity and oxygen levels. Many health professionals are recommending yoga, meditation and relaxation techniques as an antidote to stress – yoga is great at teaching our minds to quieten and teaches the body to relax – one of the aspects of yoga that most of us find the hardest! ChillOut Yoga Classes & Workshops ChillOut Yoga Meditation and Relaxation Classes, ranging from gentle to more challenging, have started in Sudbury and Long Melford. The classes are run on a drop-in basis, with Brenda giving plenty of variations to the different postures, so all are welcome to come along. Chairs are used in the gentle class if you can’t get up and down off the floor. Brenda is also running workshops on some weekends at The Boiler House in Bury St Edmunds, and gives 1-2-1 Yoga lessons or small group classes by appointment. ChillOut Yoga Teacher Training If you have you ever thought about teaching yoga, or want to deepen your practice and understanding of yoga, ChillOut Yoga Teacher Training is starting in Bury St Edmunds in September, running over one weekend a month for a year. CYTT will give you a secure foundation in the skills of teaching yoga, encouraging you to develop your own style as a safe, confident and effective professionally registered yoga teacher. The 200-hour course has flexible payment options and is registered with the Independent Yoga Network, which will enable you to join REPS as a level 3 Yoga Teacher. There are 2 free taster afternoons coming up on the 18 May and 8 June in Bury… so if you're not sure what Yoga Teacher Training involves, or are unsure if you are a suitable candidate for being a Yoga Teacher, come and meet Brenda and get a glimpse of what CYTT is all about.... More information is on www.chilloutyoga.co.uk, or give Brenda Louw a call or text on 07791 385240. Having recently moved to Suffolk, Brenda has been practicing yoga for 15 years, teaching yoga classes, meditation and relaxation for 7 years in Central Scotland, where she still runs ChillOut Yoga Teacher Training. She has a hands-on, down-to-earth approach to teaching yoga, believing yoga is about how it feels, not how it looks… so it doesn’t matter how old you are, what shape you are (or are in), how flexible or not you are… yoga can be done by anyone – all you have to do is BE YOURSELF - Smile, breathe and go slowly.

A. J. Carpets 1964 – 2014 celebrating 50 Years of Business In late April 1964 my father Alan Sparkes started a carpet and furniture business at 14 High Street A J Carpets is a family run business with Hadleigh, selling Axminster, Wilton and Tufted carpets and the new 30 years experience in floor coverings smooth flooring called Vynolay as well as all types of furniture. I can remember that the tufted carpets started at 19/11 sq yd fitted, we saw the appearance of the first Foam Backed carpets in the 60’s and also the changes from tacked down carpets to the first use of gripper rod which made the edges www.ajcarpets.co.uk Email kevinsparkes@btconnect.com of the carpets much neater. We still have my father’s first carpet stretcher which is close to 50 years old. 1983 saw the company move across the street to 21 High Street and the furniture part of the business ceased, as the emphasis was now on all types of floorcoverings. In those days we also stocked rolls of carpet for immediate delivery. 1993 saw a change of management with my brother and I taking over the day to day running of the company. At the end of 1993 we opened at our present address 112a High Street with a large range from leading manufacturers. The company currently employs 5 people with many years of experience, we offer all types of carpet, vinyl, lino, carpet tiles, vinyl tiles, laminate and solid wood flooring suitable for all domestic and commercial situations. 80 Miles in 8 days at 80 In February I celebrated my 80th birthday and as an act of thanksgiving for having reached this age, and for the years I have spent as a priest in the Church of England, I am undertaking (hopefully!) a sponsored walk using the title above. The Dales Way is an 80 mile walk which begins at Ilkley in Yorkshire. After going through Wharfedale and the valley of the Lune it ends up at the edge of the Lake District in Windermere. The two charities I am supporting are firstly Christian Aid. The walk comes at the end of Christian Aid week – I am starting on May 19th. The aim of C.A. is to help deprived communities become more self sufficient and independent. They work through local partners who pinpoint where the needs are and offer help in the name of Christ without any strings attached. It also helps people when a natural disaster strikes along with other charities. The second charity is Home-Start South Suffolk for which I have been a volunteer for 11 years. It aims to support families with children under school age who are facing difficulties (some of whom will be one-parent families). After training, volunteers undertake to visit their families for two hours each week. We offer non-judgmental practical and emotional support and help to build a family’s confidence and ability to cope. If you would like to sponsor me, please give me a ring on (01473) 827242, or visit St. Mary’s Parish Office (mornings Tues. – Frid.) and there will be a sponsorship form there for you to use. Thank you for your support. John Druce

Since opening in November the lovely customers of the Old Bakery Emporium have been giving the best possible feedback. ‘Just what Hadleigh needed’ seems to be the commonly held view. Two floors of eclectic ephemera – something for anyone and everyone. Situated by the side of Partridges in Hadleigh, it’s a place where you can get that shabby chic furniture you’ve always hankered after or just window shop and pick up an interesting object from years gone by that your grandma used to have. French kitchenalia and vintage clothing sit along side cabinets filled with china, collectables and jewellery to die for. Rugs and chandeliers hang from the rafters in the newly opened ‘Amanda’s Attic’. As summer feels just around the corner, the ‘patio’ area at the front of the shop now has more garden must-haves - reclaimed and well aged stoneware containers and statues, planters and outdoor furniture.

Spring is definitely in the air and we are noticing this as more tennis players appear for the sessions of play. The club has registered two teams for the Ipswich & District Tennis leagues this summer, and we are looking to continue building on recent, successful seasons. In addition, our coach Lawrence, can help with any younger players, developing their talents and helping them to improve their skills. He is of course also available to the “older” players who want to improve their own skills further. Membership fees will be due at the beginning of April, remember to pay early and get a discount. Also, if you are registered with the LTA too, you will be eligible for the Wimbledon ticket draw in May. As an added incentive, any NEW members joining the club this year will get a 25% discount on their 2014 membership fees if they join in April, May or June, (thereafter they will be charged a pro-rata fee). (Please note that anyone who is currently, or has previously been a member of the club in the past, will not qualify for this offer). If you are not sure whether you fit in with us, why not come along as a guest and meet us? Guest fees are currently £4 per session and you will always be welcome, bring a friend for mutual support if you like! The club is not just about playing tennis however, (though this is the main objective of course), we also enjoy a number of social events through the year, such as the annual Bar-B-Q, Christmas dinner, quiz nights, internal tournaments and fun days as well as the recently re-instated anniversary match against Bildeston. All of these events ensure that there is a good social side to the club which members and friends can enjoy. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. Following this year’s AGM we are pleased to advise that annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (with a £10 discount if paid before April 30th). Visit our website at: www.hadleightennis.org.uk, or if you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or Paul Knowles on 07747 637147.

Damage to your car? Get those winter scuffs and scrapes seen to now As spring arrives and hopefully the wet and windy weather is behind us, now is the time to check for damage on cars that may have been picked up over the winter months. Many drivers will have minor bodywork damage, scuffs and scrapes waiting to be repaired. Mike Gilderson of Scuffs and Scrapes says it is important to act swiftly and get the damage repaired now before it has a chance to get worse. For those little bodywork repairs such as a light collision in a car park or minor scuffs and scrapes through general everyday use there is an easy answer. Mike can come to your house or workplace to repair your vehicle on the same day. With most single repairs costing less than your excess it makes sense to have a SMART repair and not claim on your car insurance. What is a SMART repair? SMART, stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Techniques. It is a specialised method used to professionally repair minor damage to vehicle body work, without the inconvenience and expense involved with replacing, or respraying multiple panels. Using the same body shop quality paints and materials, infra red drying, and specifically designed spray guns, the damaged area is repaired and blended into the undamaged area, leaving your car as original as possible. Smart repairs have been developed to offer a quick, easy and cost effective way of repairing vehicle damage. The repairs are localised to the affected area only, as a result they are far smaller and much less time consuming to complete. The real advantage of this is a massive reduction in cost; a SMART repair can be up to 50% to 70% less than a body shop alternative. A secondary advantage is that Mike offers a fully mobile service that comes to you; this means that you will no longer need to put up with the inconvenience of living without your vehicle while it is at the body shop for repair. What happens with paintwork and bumper repairs? Paintwork damage is the most common form of repair needed to a vehicle, as this is exposed to the elements on a daily basis. This is usually the primary contact point for an accident and most cars need some form of TLC in their lifetime. Minor scratches can often be polished out using a very fine grade of Wet and Dry paper; this will cut back the top layer of lacquer to even out the finish. Once the paintwork has been cut back enough to allow removal of the scratch a fine Rubbing Compound is applied to bring back the original shine. A final coat of Car Polish will then finish the job. Great care needs to be taken when cutting back a damaged area as it is very easy to rub all the way through the paintwork and down to the base coat resulting in a re-spray. More serious damage will involve a localised paint repair. The SMART technician will firstly determine the colour code of your vehicle and then mix a very small amount of paint to cover the affected area. Once the affected area is prepped the colour is applied, then a top coat of lacquer and finally a fade out lacquer which ultimately blends the repaired lacquer in with the original bodywork. Same day alloy wheel repairs Alloy wheels are standard on most new cars now and can make a real difference to the look of your car. When your alloys are clean they look great, but they are easily scuffed and if not repaired quickly can ruin the look of your car. Mike can repair lightly kerbed alloys at a fraction of the cost of replacement and will not need to send the wheels away and leave you without the use of your car. How do you match the paint? Using the latest water based colour mixing scheme, and a computer program to establish the correct formula for your car, Mike will mix the desired quantity. This includes all the metallic, pearl, and solid finishes, used by vehicle manufactures today. All modern cars have a water based paint from factory, so Mike is matching like for like. Do SMART repairs last? A correctly carried out SMART repair will be no different to a correctly performed body shop repair regarding longevity. All Mike’s repairs come with a two year warranty. SMART repairs are not a cheap alternative. Although usually cheaper, SMART repairs are not a cheap DIY type of repair. The advances in paints, and regulations, mean that a SMART repair performed properly will be no less in quality than a decent, traditional body shop repair. So don’t put off repairing those annoying scuffs and scrapes this spring. For your free no obligation estimate call your local SMART repairer Mike Gilderson at Scuffs and Scrapes on 01743 824909 or 07425 583478. Don’t forget to mention the Community News when calling to get a massive 20% discount off Mike’s already great value prices for all repairs booked in during April.

H.O.M.E. Suffolk’s new Day Retreat Centre www.mehome.org.uk H.O.M.E. Day Retreat Centre is situated in the newly refurbished United Reformed Chapel set in the heart of Monks Eleigh, a beautiful village near Hadleigh in Suffolk. The chapel is part of the Ansell Trust. H.O.M.E. Retreat Centre is a simple, unpretentious venue that welcomes people of all faiths or none. With its theme of healing and meditation, H.O.M.E. offers a space for individuals and groups to take time out and pay better attention to life and nurturing faith. H.O.M.E. is available for Retreat and church meetings, as well as team building days, small conferences, weddings and other community projects. The Retreat Centre was opened in September 2013 following months of refurbishment and planning led by our Minister, the Reverend James Dalgleish and project managed by Sylvia Watson with support from a small group of people from the local community. The chapel has stood on this site for many generations. In a booklet ‘The Story of Congregationalism in Hadleigh and District’ written by George Sydenham in 1967, he chronicles the history of dissent in East Anglia since the 14th century. It is believed non-conformity came to Monks Eleigh circa 1644 when the Title of Monks Eleigh Chapel was registered. In 1824 a Mr William Faiers converted a barn that he owned for worship. In 1845 the building was purchased by John Ansell when it became connected to Hadleigh United Reformed Church. The congregation became so large that a much bigger chapel was built alongside the original to accommodate them. In recent years the numbers have dwindled and it was decided to make the smaller chapel into a place to meet the changing needs of the busy and hectic lives of people in the 21 century. H.O.M.E. offers seating for up to 40 people; modern audio visual facilities and a large monitor screen, and a well equipped small kitchen. Groups using H.O.M.E. may also avail of a nearby 5 acre woodland area, a haven for nature and wildlife offering an opportunity for reflective and contemplative walking time. It is a registered member of the ‘Quiet Garden’ movement. Monks Eleigh has a community shop/post office, a tea room/craft centre, a pub/restaurant and the opportunity for delightful country walks. There are a number of local bed and breakfast facilities for those who wish to stay overnight. H.O.M.E. welcomes everyone - of any faith or none. We look forward to hearing from you. Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net It has been another busy month at the high school and we are delighted to have been able to provide a wide range of opportunities to our pupils which have challenged and inspired them to step out of their comfort zones and take responsibility and ownership of their academic and personal development. Pacing down the slopes! Recently, a number of staff and pupils made the long journey south to go skiing in the Alps. With the temperatures having been quite moderate, there had been concerns about the snow fall; however, pupils were not disappointed and were able to undertake snowboarding and skiing activities throughout the week. Having talked to pupils, we are happy to announce that the trip was a great success and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as did our staff. Consequently, we are currently preparing for the next ski trip in 2016. More details will be published in the near future for any pupils who are interested in taking part in this trip. We want to thank Miss Beverley for leading the trip of 44 students and 6 members of staff to Austria. Pupils spent many hours on the mountains either developing their existing skills, or learning new ones with the ski instructors. One of the highlights of the week was the Slalom. This is where all students and staff raced against each other. A welldeserved congratulations go to: Sam Chapman, who came fist in the student ski category, Miss Brown, in the staff ski category, Oliver Knight, in the student snowboard category, and Mr Cook, in the staff snowboard category. Pupils also spent a relaxing evening at Therme Amade, where they experienced swimming outside in warm water springs, whilst the snow fell around them. “I really enjoyed the Ice Hockey because it was really exciting and new. The instructors were also great and friendly!” – Will Bevan. “On the ski trip I made memories that will last forever.” – Emma Chapman Thank you to all of the students who were excellent representatives of Hadleigh High School, due to their positive attitudes and superb behaviour. Under Pressure… The Year 10s have recently undergone a vigorous week of mock examinations to prepare them for the real exams in Year 11. These exams also show promising levels of progress across the year group, and lots of teachers are very proud of their students. Many students found it frightening, but they performed well under pressure. Two year 10 students voiced their opinions: Olivia Sherred said; “Being in the hall was beneficial as it has begun to prepare us for our real examinations, whilst also being good practise.” Chloe Read said; “A tiring and frustrating challenge for us all, yet we all managed to conquer it with a positive attitude.” The Year 10s are currently still receiving their results, but good reports have been frequent. Enriching the Learning of our Pupils Enrichment Day, held on the 14th of March, was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all; numerous year 7s visited Boulogne for the day. Mrs Sibley, organised a range of activities for them throughout the day including visiting a Sea Life Centre and a French Bakery in order to take part in the making of some croissants. This was a great opportunity for the Year 7s to use their French speaking skills in a real-life situation. The rest of Year 7 were also working on the French theme, and they experienced a cultural day of French surprises. They started the day with a French breakfastincluding pain au chocolat, croissant, brioche, and diablo menthe. They also had a French picnic lunch, and played a game of boules in the afternoon. The Year 7s listened to French pop music, and had a small competition to build an Eiffel Tower out of newspaper. Furthermore, the Eiffel Tower featured in an art piece as well. Our Year 8 pupils participated in an International Sports Day; they had the opportunity to try new sports from different countries including Kabbadi (India), Lacrosse (Native America), Tai Chi (Asia), Volley Ball and Ultimate Frisbee 30 Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

(North America) and Handball (Europe). The Year 8s also competed for the ‘International Sports Day Cup’. For their enrichment, the Year 9s took part in the Real Game, a day designed to test their views on the world. All the Year 9s were divided into groups and spent the day learning about how their dream world with a dream job might not be the reality that is possible. This day was designed to show the students about the real world and what is achievable with an average salary. This prepared them for the adult world. The majority of the Year 10 students were working together to organise the public fete that will be held on the 10th May. The organising of the fete is a great chance to develop their planning and enterprise skills and will look brilliant on CVs in the future. The year group was split into the following different sections to divide the work load equally: budgeting and finance, fundraising, hospitality and catering, marketing and logistics. The Year 10 Science and English EPQ students visited the University of East Anglia to further enrich their understanding of their topic and find sources and evidence to help them with the dissertations that they are currently working on. Our Year 11s had a reward trip to Cambridge shopping as a reward for the hard work they have been putting in recently for their GCSEs. Those who stayed behind were catching up on any coursework that had not been thoroughly completed. The Cake Off! 7 Toppesfield, on Monday the 17th of March, held a cake sale in aid of the East Anglia Air Ambulance; to raise money so that there can be more night flights. Miss Bearman, 7 Toppesfield’s form tutor commented; ‘It’s helping them to develop skills needed to work in a community, and they felt it necessary to raise money after a visit from a representative from the Air Ambulance came to a Toppesfield assembly.’ Stylish Skorts! The new team kit has arrived! A huge thank you to the Hadleigh High School PTA who have helped finance the purchase of a new kit for the netball team. The Year 11 team recently took part in a photo shoot to model the kit, and Year 8 team have already made use of it in competitive play. Now all we have to do it raise our play to match how smart we look! Questions Galore On Friday 7th March, a Quiz Night took place at Hadleigh High School to raise money for the school. The teams were made up of six contestants including teachers, parents and some of the pupils who attend the school. The questions were tough, the knowledge was wide - the game was on. Questions varied from music, to food and drinks, geography, to famous faces. We would like to congratulate the winners ‘There’s a snake in my boot’. Commiserations to ‘The Misfits’ who came last place with a score of 39 out of a possible 100, the school being as thoughtful as they are, gave each team member from ‘The Misfits’ a prize. If you would like to partake in the Quiz Night next year please feel welcome to, all you need is a team of six, a team name and your knowledge. Hadleigh High School Venture London Girls from across the school years went on a trip to London on Saturday 8th March to watch the Mavericks vs. Surrey Storm in the Copper Box in the London Olympic Park. The girls also had a fantastic time shopping in Westfield before the match, one student said: “It was really fun to spend time with my friends from school in London and we had such a good time shopping. The match was the highlight of the day, some cheering for Mavericks and others for Surrey Storm. Even though some were upset with the results, we all still really enjoyed the match and the atmosphere.” We would like to congratulate Surrey Storm who survived a ferocious fight back from Hertfordshire Mavericks before securing a 52-50 victory. Challenging Number Puzzles On Friday the 28th February two Year 8 students, Lewis Quinn and I, plus two Year 9 students, Eloise Cairns and Adam Morsman, represented Hadleigh High School at a UK Mathematics Trust Regional Final at Framlingham College. We were up against 14 other schools so the competition was going to be tough, but we were determined to have a great day. The competition consisted of 4 challenges; team questions, crossnumber puzzles, mini-relay and a team-relay, which included some difficult number puzzles to chew over. Our final overall position was 10th, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our day. By Laura Flockhart 8O. Sports Relief – Fundraising On the week beginning the 17th of March there was several fundraising activities organised by several learning support assistants. A 24 hour triathlon took place where the students either ran, rowed or cycled continuously for 15 minutes in order to raise money for Sport Relief. Other activities were carried out during the week, at the cost of 30p per person, such as a dodgeball tournament, penalty shootout and shoot the hoop challenge. The week ended in a non-school uniform day, with the students dressed predominantly in red, along with a sponsored walk/run/hop/skip a mile. Miss Norris said that ‘it was a great opportunity for the students to participate in fundraising activities that will help those less fortunate.’

Suffolk Fostering Service needs carers for children of all ages There are currently around 750 children in care in Suffolk, the majority of these are in foster care, and placed with our own registered foster carers. Suffolk County Council wants all children in its care to have a permanent, safe home in which they will be loved, nurtured and thrive. For some this will be with members of their family, while for others the best option will be for them to be adopted or be with a permanent fostering family. Suffolk Fostering Service needs carers for children of all ages, but is particularly interested in hearing from people able to care for sibling groups or children over the age of 11. Foster carer Jackie says ‘ Being a foster carer gives me a huge sense of pride in what I am doing – to make such a difference, and to be part of, and share, a child’s life is so gratifying’ Contact the Fostering Service on: 0800 328 2148 or visit www.suffolkfostering.com Suffolk Adoption Agency is currently looking for families particularly for brothers and sisters to grow up together in pairs or groups of three; children over three and disabled children of all ages. Building a family through adoption is rewarding, and is an opportunity to make a very significant different to someone’s life Contact the Adoption Agency on: 0800 389 9417 or visit www.suffolkadoption.com

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts At the moment I am both sad and frustrated. We have had a spell of dry weather and the garden is drying up nicely, but we have unfortunately had a nasty accident in the garden. My wife slipped on some mud and fell on her elbow which she smashed up badly on the concrete path that I was laying. To make it even more frustrating the work in progress was aimed at making the garden safer. My wife now has a new elbow, and is improving slowly, but it is going to be some time before she can help me to the extent that she normally does in the garden. The result of this is that the Winter garden path project is virtually at a standstill, and my early potatoes are not yet planted. Still I got most of the other March jobs done except for the weeding. Unless I get some of this done I am going to have severe trouble with Bitter Cress. This is a frustrating weed which makes a small rosette of leaves. It then throws up a little spike of white flowers which rapidly forms seed head. These then explode spreading the seed over a wide area. This year in mid March the seed pods are already forming. Thinking about safety are your paths slippery, or have they sunk and become uneven representing a trip hazard? Could your steps do with a handrail? Open Gardens This feature returns this month as the weather warms up. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 April Feeringbury Manor, Coggeshall Rd, Feering CO5 9RB 6 April 6 Gardens, Walsham the Willows, Bury St Edmunds IP31 3AA 6 April Woodwards, Blacksmiths Lane, Coddenham IP6 9TX 13 April The Beeches, Grove Rd, Walsham le Willows IP31 3AD 20 April Rosemary, Rectory Hill, East Bergholt CO7 6TH 20, 21 April Tudor Roost, 18 Frere Way, Fingringhoe, Colchester CO5 7BP 27 April East Bergholt Place, East Bergholt CO7 6UP Weather Records In February at Kersey there were 76.1 mm (3") of rain, which is about 50% higher than our average monthly rainfall. This is high for February, but February rainfall is quite variable. The 3 monthly total at the end of February was 211.2 mm (8.3") which is 30% more than the average, but we have had very little rain in the early part of March. In February the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (55F), which is what we would expect. The minimum temperature for February was 1 Cel (34F) which is warm for the month. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 10 Cel (50F), which is warmer than average for mid March. Hints When I was pruning my roses this year I was surprised at how many of last years leaves were still in place, and some of them still had black spot on them. This suggests to me that this might be a bad year for black spot so it would probably be a good idea to spray roses with a fungicide some time this month. All the rain that we have had will have washed a lot of nutrients out of the soil, so plants will benefit from being fed with a suitable fertilizer even more than usual this year. Do not get carried away with the lovely mild weather in mid March. Statistically it snows more often in April than in November, and we could still get some hard frosts. Forget about planting bedding plants until well into May even though the Gardens Centres already have them. If you have a greenhouse or conservatory in which to keep them it is worth buying pots of seedlings to prick out and grow on yourself. Happy Gardening, John Rye

We are excited to bring you news of being shortlisted for Suffolk’s Greenest County Awards 2014 in the Climate Adaptation category. By the time you read this the results may well have been announced (due on 28th March), so do check on their website http://www.greensuffolk.org/awards2014 Now that spring is in the air, we are looking forward to a new project starting later this year. We are offering volunteers the opportunity to learn green woodworking over the summer, starting around end May/beginning June, working one day per week. We are planning to build two walkways, joining both the teaching barn and the carpark to the orchard, to ensure that all activities at the Education Centre are accessible to all, regardless of physical ability. Volunteers will acquire basic, and potentially intermediate, carpentry skills, and will learn to use hand tools, a pole lathe and a shave horse (see photo), with the additional opportunity to use tools such as a side axe and froe on certain weeks. There will be no charge as we will have funding to cover our costs, including experienced teaching staff, but you will need to commit to attending on a regular basis throughout the period. If you think you might be interested, please do contact us as soon as possible, so that we can give you more information and register your potential involvement. We also have another advance announcement for our Building Traditional Skills Day on 7 June, 11am to 4pm. There will be talks from experts in the morning, followed by demonstrations and the opportunity to gets hands-on experience in the afternoon, covering timber framing, green woodworking, wattle & daub, clay render, cob and lime. The event is FREE but, as a not-forprofit community interest company, we invite donations. Please do book your place early. For all bookings and further information, please contact Sarah at sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or call 01473 658193/07766 054042 More information on all events and courses can be found on our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Discover Suffolk In 79 Ways Over 23 Days The Suffolk Walking Festival 2014 Suffolk Walking Festival brochures are hot off the press with details of nearly 80 guided walks covering the whole of the county. Now in its seventh year, the festival kicks off with the 'Launch Jaunt' at 10.30am on 10th May at Ickworth House near Bury St Edmunds, with the help of Lesley Dolphin from BBC Radio Suffolk. A £5 ticket for the Launch Jaunt includes entrance to the beautiful parkland surrounding this iconic National Trust property, coffee and cake and a three mile guided walk with National Trust guides. Throughout the three week festival, which runs until 1st June, there will be a delightful mix of short strolls around medieval villages and market towns and longer rambles through the gentle landscapes of Suffolk; through Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and along the glorious Suffolk coast. These include guided walks with intriguing titles such as: 'Across the Marshes to the Castle', 'A Point to my Ramblings', 'Tiptoe Through the Heather' and ‘Prickles’ Story Walk‘. Participants can 'Walk the Burma Road', learn about the 'Maritime Heritage of the Ipswich Waterfront', walk through 'Rolling Fields and a Cutting Garden' and even try a free taster session of Nordic walking. “Many of the walks sold out last year,” says David Falk, manager of Discover Suffolk “so we are delighted that we have been able to develop the festival to include more walks than ever before. The range is fantastic and really offers something to suit all tastes and abilities. We are proud of what we have to offer here in Suffolk and this festival highlights the heritage and diversity of the county, which is what makes it so special”. Many walks include refreshments - afternoon tea with freshly baked, fluffy scones perhaps, or a glass of wine at a local vineyard; and all of them are a fun and sociable way to learn about the county of Suffolk. The festival will also be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Stour Valley Path with a series of walks covering the length of the path, organised by the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley Project team. You are invited to make the most of what Suffolk has to offer in abundance: peaceful countryside, enchanting villages, warm hospitality and a fascinating history. Since many of the walks were sold out last year, early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. Tickets can be booked at most Suffolk tourist information centres, or online at suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk

Warning on scam phone calls Police are urging residents not to give out personal banking information and never to hand over bank cards after two scams were reported to officers within minutes recently. Earlier in the month police were contacted by a man in Ipswich who said that in the past hour he and several family members had been conned out of thousands of pounds. The householder had taken a call from someone claiming to work for a bank who advised that someone had tried to take money from his account. The householder called a number that was supposedly for his bank and gave details of everyone in the family who banked online, including their passwords. Just two minutes later police took another call from a 93-year-old woman who reported that about 8 pm she had taken a call from a man claiming to be a police officer at Holborn in London, who told her to ring the number on her bank card. She did this and was told that someone was coming to collect her bank cards. A foreign male then arrived at her address and she handed the cards over. It’s thought both of these are scams and were as a result of the offenders leaving the telephone line open – so the residents thought they were speaking to the relevant bank when really they were still on line to the criminals who made the original call. Police are currently speaking with both victims and are making enquiries. Officers are urging residents to be extremely careful when dealing with any unknown callers and to NEVER to give out personal information or to hand over cards or money in these circumstances. Please remember the following, and please alert older family members and friends to the tricks the scammers can use • Your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details out. • The police will never call you and ask you to withdraw money from your account, and will never ask you to handover bank cards, to give to a courier or taxi driver, regardless of how convincing the caller may seem. • If you receive such a call leave the landline for at least five minutes to make an outside call. Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ring tones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number. • Use a friend’s or neighbour’s telephone instead. • Friends, family, carers and neighbours are asked to spread the word to ensure everyone is aware of this scam and not to give out personal details.

A New Season Begins.. With Spring just around the corner minds are turning to the start of the new Cricket Season with the first fixture on Sunday 27 April. Under the able captaincy of Jack Clark, Edwardstone will once again be without doubt the youngest team in the league however optimism is high due to the manner in which the team finished off 2013. Last years leading bowler and batsman were both Under 15’s and with another years experience Jack is looking forward to some competitive matches. The nets will be erected at Homefield within the next few weeks with practice sessions each Thursday evening from 6.30. With so many youngsters the club are always on the lookout for some older players , if only to keep Ray Gibbons company, so if you anyone wishes to dust off their whites we would be delighted to see you ! The junior section goes from strength to strength as evidenced by the graduation to the senior team of so many teenagers. Tim Beven will be running a cricket taster with the cubs/scouts on 25th March with outdoor training beginning on Homefield each Saturday morning from 9.30 to 11.00 from Easter onwards. All are welcome.

Newton Green in strong position A strong performance both on the course and behind the scenes was reported at the annual general meeting of Newton Green Golf Club. During the meeting, members elected Andy Dodds a honorary life member following his recent Queen's Birthday award honour, which marked his contribution to both Sudbury Mens competition winners Cricket Club and Newton Green. Peter Philpott was confirmed as the club's new chairman. Andrew Johnson becomes men's captain, joining Sue Thurgate as ladies' captain. Their respective vice captains Bill Havers and Sheila Walter move onto the main committee, with Bernie Pratt. It was confirmed both captains and the seniors captain Mike Norton would be supporting Canine Partners, the first time a charity has been adopted on a joint basis at the club. During the meeting, retiring captain Chris Williams, a full time paramedic, presented a cheque of £1,105 to Paul Calverset of the Childrens Burns Club. The evening concluded with the presentation of prizes to winners of mens' and mixed Mixed competition winners competitions.

U13s Suffolk Cup victory for Hadleigh On Sunday, 2nd March, Hadleigh Rugby Club U13s played Bury St Edmunds RFC in what was a must win game for the Suffolk Cup. Hadleigh came into the game having beaten Colchester and Woodbridge, but still needed a draw or a win to make certain of winning the Cup. It was a game that produced some excellent rugby from both teams. Hadleigh were pinned back in their own territory for much of the first half and even though they put up a fierce defence Bury managed to score a try and a penalty to make it 8-0 at half time. In the second half Hadleigh found their rhythm and produced two stunning tries from Toyo Ungelesi and Dan Squirrell, with a conversion from Jake Marston to give them 12 points. Bury came back at Hadleigh in waves right up to the final seconds, but Hadleigh held on to win and to take the Cup outright with 100% winning record. This was an historic day for Hadleigh. The U13s are the first Hadleigh youth side to win the County Cup, and now they enter the Eastern Counties Cup on 23rd March. Richard Braybrooke Coach Co-ordinator & U13s Coach, Hadleigh RFC
