Alex Cooper and Kian Chubb have both signed for Ipswich Town Football Club’s under 9's Academy. Alex son of PGA Advanced Golf Professional Tim Cooper from Newton Green Golf Club and Kian whose father is a PE teacher at Thurston School in Bury signed for Ipswich Town. Both played for AFC Sudbury under 8's were Graham Chubb, Kian's father was manager, both lads had an amazing season for AFC Sudbury with Alex scoring over 40 goals and Kian over 50 goals during the season. The team losing just two games and winning the League Cup, both players will be sad to leave Sudbury but are looking forward to some exciting times with the Ipswich Town Academy especially the first two games this summer against Arsenal and West Ham away. Both lads were scouted whilst playing for AFC Sudbury and had 12 months training with Ipswich Town under 8's, both impressed the coaches with their talent and were offered contracts at the end of last year and then officially signed in May with pre season training starting in July.

What’s On in Sudbury - July 2016 Some of England’s greatest artists have found inspiration in and around Sudbury including one of Sudbury’s most famous sons, Thomas Gainsborough. Until the July 24, Gainsborough's House are displaying nine landscape paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. This is an international collaboration with the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, a museum and gallery in the Netherlands. As a young artist, Thomas Gainsborough was greatly inspired by the Dutch landscape tradition of the seventeenth century. Between July 19 and 24, the Sudbury Summer Art Show will be in St. Peter’s, showcasing the work of around 50 local artists. Work will include paintings, pottery, printmaking and mosaics, most of which will be for sale. The eighth Party in the Park will be held in Belle Vue Park on July 24. The event aims to raise the profile of the diverse range of clubs and groups in and around Sudbury. There will be displays by local groups, a range of activities and live music in the evening. Throughout July, St. Peter’s will be continuing with free lunchtime concerts every Tuesday between 12.30 and 1.30, Kettle & Fish hold their peaceful café and information centre every Thursday and not forgetting the very successful Farmers Market which is held on the last Friday of every month. From July 25 to 30, the Quay Theatre will be running its Summer Schools for young people aged 10 to 15 years. It’s a chance to learn and refine performance skills through classes, workshops and performances. Booking in advance is required to take part. For a full list of all the events visit the Sudbury Tourist Information Centre located in the library or on the What’s On page at www.seeanddosudbury.co.uk. Jane Hatton, Sudbury Town Team

Delphi Sports and Social club is open for bookings As result of the Sudbury Town Council’s decision recently to give notice of their intention to review their position of directly running the Delphi Club, the users of the centre have been holding regular meetings to determine how best to respond to that decision. It was felt that a more proactive approach to maximise the use of the club was required in order to reduce the club’s deficit and fully utilise the facility, we are therefore getting directly involved in the promotion of the club and are inviting Sports clubs, Societies, organisations and individuals to make enquiries about the availability of the Sports facilities, which has an enclosed Sports field and is one of the best in the area and the club itself which has an outstanding Dance floor and several rooms that are available for Meetings, Parties, Dances etc. There are a number of clubs, groups and organisations that are using the club on a regular basis but there is still plenty of opportunities for other groups and individuals to make bookings, the Sports ground and changing facilities are available every Saturday and Sunday afternoons, bookings can be made at the Sudbury Town Council offices and the premises can be inspected by appointment, directly at the club or Sudbury Town Hall. With your support we are confident of the clubs future and will be having discussions over the next few months, with Delphi and the Town Council about how best this can be achieved. Further information can be obtained from Ray Ward Chairman of the Delphi users group by phone on 01206263189 or e mail at 4vathelp@gmail.com

Sudbury Carpet Care Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Services

We are delighted to announce that three of our experienced technicians have qualified to the high standards of Woolsafe for the safest, no risk cleaning and care for your carpets. Our company is proud to have the most amount of qualified Woolsafe Fibre care Technicians in the county. Have you ever questioned whether your carpets, rugs, or soft furnishings should be cleaned? Many do question it and they are normally persuaded with the answer no, it’s not worth it as they are never the same again. But the answer is YES!! They should be cleaned. But having the correct type of cleaning is the key factor to ensure the right results are achieved. A carpet cleaner is a carpet cleaner though? Right!! No, Wrong. We all believe that if something looks cleaner then it is cleaner but when we look into it a bit deeper, we find some interesting answers. The most popular fibre used in carpets in the UK are Wool. Wool is extremely good at hiding soil and responds extreme well to cleaning, however it is also extremely delicate. 95% of carpet cleaners in the UK are trained normally by American systems and process from where the industry started, but the carpets are mainly man made synthetics. When the trained carpet cleaners clean a wool fibre in the UK, it looks good until a few weeks later then starts to attract dirt quickly, feels course and gritty, spills become stains and the appearance is poor. Our Woolsafe approved technicians are trained and qualified to clean wool to the set British standards to ensure that the delicate fibres are not damaged in any way. The fibres will look deeper in colour, feel softer and last longer with this type of cleaning service without the risk of damage from cleaning it the same way as a manmade fibre that will certainly cause damage and determination. With the correct tailored cleaning processes, we can ensure that the fibres are maintained and cleaned to extend the life and keep the luxurious appearance that wool deserves. We not only clean and protect, but we offer a wide variety of specialist services too:Carpets • Upholstery • Soft Furnishing • Hard flooring Machine and Handmade rugs – see www.suffolkrugcare.co.uk for more info.

WoW (Women On Wheels) Sudbury Returns – Calling all Women and Girls to get on their bike WoW Sudbury returns on Sunday 18th September following last year’s successful event with over 100 women and girls taking part. With a choice of a 5, 20 or 50 mile route available through countryside and cycle paths around Sudbury and surrounding villages. The event will start at AFC Sudbury, the ride will be fully marshaled, signed and with on route stops for tea and cake, open to women and girls aged eight and over of all abilities. To kick off the launch of WoW Sudbury 2016 a charity spinning event was held at Kingfisher Leisure Centre yesterday with all proceeds raised going to St Nicholas Hospice Care. South Suffolk Leisure’s staff spent a total of 10 hours spinning. Tracey Loynds, Chief Executive of South Suffolk Leisure said: “We are delighted to be hosting the second WoW event in Sudbury especially after the success of last year’s event and the charity spinning event was a great event to launch WoW Sudbury 2016. Why not dig your bikes out of the back of the shed, dust of the cobwebs and pump up your tires and come and join us for a great day out.” One of the most fulfilling aspects of WoW is seeing the joy on the faces of the women and girls taking part, often rediscovering the pleasure of being on a bike, and this is reflected in many of the testimonials. “Wow, what a fantastic event. Well organised, lovely weather, a few hills but loads of cake. We will be back.” “Amazing day, superb organisation, so friendly.” “Fantastic event, great route, good opportunity to meet other ladies.” St Nicholas Hospice Care’s Community Fundraiser George Chilvers said: “We are very grateful to be having WoW Sudbury in aid of the hospice again especially after the amazing amount raised last year of £6045, as we rely so heavily on the local community to help us enable people to have the very best experience in the final chapters of their lives. As the palliative care provider for Sudbury, it’s so important for us to get support from the town – this event is doing just that. Please sign up and together we really can help. Thank you.” To register for the WoW Ride visit www.stnicholashospice.org.uk/wowsudbury Entry is £15 for the 20 and 50 mile ride and £5 for the 5 mile ride. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk There are not many subjects I would have expected to force me to abridge an article about the centenary of the Battle of the Somme at the last minute, but the brutal murder of a fellow Member of Parliament is one of them. Like me, Jo Cox was born in 1974; she was elected to the House of Commons on the same day that I earned the great privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament. Jo attended many of the same debates and statements as me, always displaying striking passion and intelligence; and I find it so painful to think that she will not be facing me across the green benches ever again. I have tried as best I can to pass on the messages of condolence I have received for her bereaved family from constituents. I am also grateful for the many messages of good wishes that I have been sent by so many of you, including supporters of all parties, and I can assure all of you that the surgeries advertised on the opposite page will continue; I will not be stopped from trying to serve South Suffolk to the best of my ability. Fear of violence must not triumph over democracy. On 1st July it will have been 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme, a day of unparalleled bloodshed in our army's history. I will be marking the centenary with the Sudbury branch of the Royal British Legion at their Commemoration Service on Market Hill on 3rd July. Parliament will hold a special debate on 29th June. We will commemorate the most epic sacrifice on behalf of this nation. In her own way, like those soldiers a century ago, Jo Cox died bravely serving her country. We must never forget either sacrifice.

Visit Us: Sudbury Area Cancer Support Group Ruth’s Ramblings Quite a few of you have said a month is too long between meetings. I am also conscious some people with cancer may be put off by our more formal meeting set up and would prefer to meet in a more relaxed setting. So we have come up with the SACSG Coffee Club!! It will be called Cakes, Coffee and Cancer (3Cs). 3Cs will meet in Painters Cafe on the 2nd Friday of every month from 1030 – 1230. The time Phil and I can devote to the group has its limits, so I am particularly pleased Graham and Sue Brett have agreed to organise this addition to our activities. We can run more activities if volunteers are prepared to run them. If you are interested in coming along, please give your contact details to Graham and Sue Brett. Tel: 01708 827056 email: graandsue@hotmail.com Thursday 4th August 6.30 to 8.30pm Sudbury Water Meadow walk and Mill Hotel drink. Young students reap awards for their hard work The students received their awards at an end of season ceremony at AFC Sudbury’s Wardale Williams Stadium where the academy is based. The academy was launched in 2014 – in partnership with the Ormiston Sudbury Academy - to provide 16 to18 year olds with nationally recognised qualifications in both the sporting and academic sectors. The academy operates on a full-time basis and currently offers two year courses for up to 30 people. During the recent ceremony Jordan Blackwell.18, of Bures, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award. Tyler French, 17, of Long Melford, received the Player’s Player Award and Ryan McNicholas, 17, of Assington was named Young Player of the Year. The awards were presented by Amanda Skinner, Practice Manager at opticians Wardale Williams, which is the club’s main sponsor. She said: “As the club’s main sponsor we were very proud to present the awards and to support the academy, which we feel is a great local asset. The academy helps young people to gain recognised qualifications putting them on the right path to meaningful careers. I would like to congratulate not only the award winners but everybody involved in the academy.” Photographs show the three academy players receiving their awards from Amanda Skinner of Wardale Williams

Sudbury and Great Cornard to be transformed by Real Life Walking Game ‘Beat the Street’ - a fun sixweek competition that encourages participants to walk, run and cycle as far as possible in a journey around the world is coming to Sudbury and Great Cornard. The initiative will transform Sudbury and Great Cornard into a real-life game in which residents are challenged to join a team and see how far they can travel. From 21 September to 2 November, special ‘Beat Boxes’ will be going up lampposts across both areas. Residents will be given special cards which they can tap against Beat Boxes to log their journey and receive points for how far they travel. Players will be encouraged to join and create teams to be able to win big prizes. There will be prizes for the teams that travel the furthest including £500 worth of sports equipment from Decathlon for the top team and the team that tops the average points leaderboard. There are also weekly ‘lucky tap’ prizes which anyone taking part can win. Beat the Street Sudbury and Great Cornard is an initiative run by Intelligent Health in partnership with Suffolk County Council. Taking place during Suffolk’s Year of Walking, Beat the Street is designed to inspire whole communities to get moving. More than 50,000 people have already taken part in 2016 in Hounslow, Wolverhampton, Sandwell and other towns and cities. Cllr Tony Goldson, Cabinet Member for Health at Suffolk County Council, said: "We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Intelligent Health on this initiative. It’s very exciting because it shows that being physically active doesn't have to be a chore - it can be a lot of fun. “I would urge anyone, of any age and ability, who lives, works or attends school in Sudbury and Great Cornard to pick up a card, get involved and play their part in helping Suffolk become the most active county in England.” Dr William Bird, founder of Intelligent Health, the company that will deliver the Beat the Street project, added: “We developed the game to add a competitive element to physical activity as being active has a positive effect on 23 long term health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and breast and colon cancer. Additionally, getting out and about in the fresh air is good for mental health, reduces traffic congestion and allows participants to enjoy their area.” For more information about Beat the Street, visit beatthestree.me/SGC, follow Beat the Street on Twitter (@BTSSGC) or like Beat the Street SGC on Facebook

SUDBURY Walking football strolls into town The first walking football session at AFC Sudbury’s Wardale Williams Stadium was held on Tuesday May 24. Walking football, a craze sweeping the UK, will now be held every Tuesday between 2pm and 3pm. The games will be played on a turn up and play basis, meaning participants do not need to be part of a team. AFC Sudbury director Richard Instance said: “We are delighted to have finally launched walking football on the 3G surface, which has been our aim ever since the pitch was laid. People will now have the opportunity to come down and take part in this exciting version of the game on a weekly basis. The game is much harder than it looks and it is a great way for people to keep fit and healthy. We hope the game takes off in Sudbury as well as it has in other areas.” Walking football is a variant of association football with the key difference being players are not allowed to run and will concede a free kick if they do so. Sliding tackles are banned to avoid injury and originally the game was played without goalkeepers, although this is now optional. The only other difference is the ball is not allowed above hip-height. The sport was devised, during 2011, by the Chesterfield F.C. Community Trust. Following significant media coverage several other clubs took up this version of the game and it is now played all over the country. The manner in which the sport is played promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst producing the least stress on the body making it accessible to all age groups. Participation will be £4 per session, which includes tea and biscuits. As the sessions are held on the 3G surface players must wear studded or bladed boots. Anyone wanting to know more about walking football or other opportunities to play on the new 3G pitch should contact AFC Sudbury on 01787 376213 or visit www.3gafc.co.uk

The return of hire boats on a picturesque stretch of a Suffolk river is set to trigger a ‘significant’ boost to the local economy

TEL: 01787 228184 www.bloomfieldfurniture.co.uk District and Town Councillor Simon Barrett with Gordon Hardy trying out one of the new hire boats on the River Stour at Sudbury It is estimated the return of rowing boats, kayaks and canoes for hire on the River Stour at Sudbury will generate up to £200,000 in ancillary tourist spend by the end of the summer. Historically, rowing boats for hire from the Boathouse Restaurant site were a common feature popular with locals and tourists alike. However, both the boats and the restaurant ceased to trade more than 15 years ago when Ballingdon Bridge was being rebuilt. The bridge work was completed in 2002 but the Boathouse Restaurant remained closed until it was reopened as part of the Rare Cow franchise in 2015. Following a successful trail period last summer, which attracted hundreds of visitors the boats have now returned on a regular basis. Simon Barrett, portfolio holder for growth and local economy at Babergh District Council, said: “The return of the hire boats from the Boathouse House site is great news for Sudbury. We are confident from the trial last year that the boats will stimulate a significant economy boost from the tourism spend, which is good news for local businesses and residents alike. “For many years these boats were an important feature of Sudbury life, popular with both tourists and local residents and it is fabulous to have them back after such a long absence. Sudbury is already a great tourist destination and having the boats available again adds another string to its bow.” The boats will now be available for hire every weekend and during holiday times up until the end of September. People have the choice of a gentle row upstream, longer paddles to local restaurants at Henny and Nayland and the more adventurous can even go all the way out to sea at Cattawade. Gordon Hardy, director of the Outdoor Hire Centre, which is running the hire scheme, said. “We are delighted to have brought the boats back to Sudbury. This stretch of the river is a treasured and tranquil place immortalised by the works of Constable and Gainsborough. It is a great experience to see this part of the landscape from the water. We will limit the amount of hires on each day to protect the tranquillity of the area, which is what makes it so special. During the trial last year 80% of our custom was via tourists, which is great news for the local economy. Tourists will generate an ancillary spend at local amenities such as restaurants, hotels, cafes, gift shops and other attractions.“However, the boats are not just available for tourists, we would like to encourage more local people to come along and enjoy this beautiful stretch of river, which goes through a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is right on their doorstep.” For more information on the hire boats from the Boathouse site go to www.outdoorhirecentres.com or telephone 01206 700 707. Reservations can be made by email reservations@outdoorhirecentre.co.uk

Mum’s got babies all over the place. Kittens in the kitchen, fledglings over the fireplace, ducklings on the dining table, all demanding yet another feed. Just as they all settled down, a bunch of orphaned partridge chicks arrived. It’s enough to drive a chap quackers! Meanwhile the volunteers are preparing for the SESAW Open Day and Fun Dog Show, open midday on Sunday 31st July, 12-4pm. Four hours of family fun and entertainment on “the happiest day of our year” as my human friend Sandra once said. We hope lots of our rehomed canines will return to enter the special ex-SESAW dog class - or just to say hello. Other classes include Best Puppy, Golden Oldie, Waggiest Tail and Most Appealing Eyes For the people, there will be food, games, competitions, our Wildlife Guru George Millins, food, stalls selling pet items, gifts, books, BBQ, did I mention food? Old friends and new are welcome so enjoy the day, music from the Long Melford Silver Band and don’t forget to meet all the animals too. Free parking, 50p admission. Before our big day, the Shelley Centre, Layham Road, IP7 5QY, has kindly invited us to it’s Fun Dog Show on 9th July, starting at 11am. The next day, Sunday 10th, we will have a stall at the Long Melford Street Fair from 2-7pm. The organisers have lots of family entertainment planned. I’ll need a Kenmobile to chauffeur me through the crowds at our Open Day but I’ll steer clear of the Dog Show. Mum says I’m in a class of my own. and they don’t have a “Most Bossy” category to suit me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Taste of Sudbury Thousands of visitors filled Market Hill and St Peters at the fourth Taste of Sudbury Food and Drink Festival on Sunday the 12th June despite the weather and there was more space than expected due to HSBC removing its mobile bank off Market Hill on the Friday beforehand. Jane Hatton said “we are lucky to have St. Peter’s as when there was a shower people could go inside but many just sheltered under gazebos until it passed. On stage we had a great line up of local chefs and new for 2016 they took part in the omelette challenge, which was won by Kevin Fernandez from Rafis Spicebox in North Street who made an omelette in 43 seconds. A young lady called Poppy won the sausage challenge but all enjoyed having a go. Everyone who took the opportunity to join in with the 5 course taster set menu in the Jam Tartz Pop Up Restaurant were amazed by the food and drink provided. The Jam Tartz Head Chef, Jon Cutts had previously worked for the Queen and was called out of the kitchen with his team at the end of the meal to a round of applause. The pop up restaurant had been set up in the style of a street party to join in with all the other parties which were being held around the country on the same day. The menu also promoted the other stall holders at the Taste of Sudbury as many of the ingredients and drinks used were provided by the other exhibitors. Craig Hogg from 55 Above said "It was a great turn out and I’m pleased the rain didn’t stop people hanging around. I had a great success at the show and the feedback from the locals was very positive in regards to our vodkas and newly released gins especially after tasting the toffee vodka in the Jam Tartz menu". My 2½ year old daughter Celeste loves cheese. Really loves it. If she has a cheese sandwich, she'll pick the filling out; the rest is for the birds. I'd been winding her up about Sudbury's Food Festival for days, so she woke up on Sunday with shouts of: “Mummy! Daddy! Cheese party! Quick!” I have my own reasons for being overexcited. At last year's festival, I discovered the East Coast Chilli Company and casually bought a few bottles, really just because it was there. I ran out a week later and, like an addict, I've been waiting impatiently for my dealer to appear again. “Quick Lyn! Before it all gets sold!” I shouted, bundling everyone out of the door. Like all wonderful summer attractions, it was raining heavily when we arrived but all that meant to Celeste was that there was no queue at “the Cheese and Pie Man” stall. There was such a variety that I think her little toddler brain broke. She would've stayed all day if the free samples kept coming; in the end, we bought some pie and cheese just to compensate the poor man for his losses! Just when you thought that all the room in a two year old toddler must have been filled, she performed another vanishing act at the “Beehouse Honey Company” stall! Another purchase; a heavier bag. It took us a little while to get into St. Peters: the turnout this year seemed as good as ever, but everyone was hiding from the weather in the church! Just as we'd given up on ever getting in, the weather changed again and everyone came out. Celeste was goggle-eyed at everything: the muffins, the coloured bottles of liquids that I won't tell her about until she's much, much older and the chocolates. My poor wife pushed round a pram increasingly laden with whatever delicacies took Celeste's fancy, as she toddled around the happy crowd. Special mention has to be made of the young gentleman running the “Nudge Drinks” stall in St. Peters. Celeste was delighted with a small strawberry smoothie all to her self and horrified when she dropped it. Not only did the organisers rally round to deal with the mess while I just flapped, the young gentleman made her day and averted the tears with a new complimentary drink less than a minute after the first hit the floor. Bravo: you made a little girl very happy! She was enjoying herself so much that she even tried a little of a mixed seafood tub from “Munros Fresh Fish” and, although her prawn did end up on the floor, she did chew it at least once before spitting it out. I, on the other hand, thought it all delicious – especially the mackerel. Even Transition Sudbury's model cow got a try although, being two years old, she's got a very good idea of what a cow is, she's less sure of why you'd try to milk one. She did love getting a certificate with her name on though, even if I'm not sure that her hands ever came into contact with fake udders. With lunchtime (and nap time) rapidly approaching, we stopped off at a stall selling ice-cream. Celeste ate her honey ice-cream, Lyn's raspberry ice-cream and about a kilogram of sprinkles. There was onion bhaji in her hair, crumbs in every fold of her clothes and melted ice-cream in her eyebrows, but little smoothie-stained fists were starting to rub at her little eyes. It was time for a photograph.“Cheese!” I called”. For more funny family stories out and about in Sudbury and Suffolk, try trainyourdaddy.blogspot.co.uk

News from The Rotary Club Of Sudbury Among recent events earlier in the year, Rotary organised a Stroke Awareness Day at the Town Hall and we saw a constant stream of people wishing to check their Blood Pressure. It proved a valuable activity, as again several people needed referral to their G.P.s for further assessment. On the 16th May, Sue Tibbetts gave an interesting talk on Sudbury Ephemera, explaining how through the archiving of literature, leaflets and pamphlets, the local history of groups and organisations can be ‘kept alive’ It was suggested that we should provide documentation from the history of our Rotary Club in order to make it accessible to local people. Rule Britannia! - on Saturday night, 18th June we held our annual Prom concert at St Peters, Market Hill Sudbury, led this year by the Long Melford Silver Band.. As usual, this was well-attended we all enjoying all the singing, banner-waving and balloonbursting in true "Last Night of the Proms" style. Gill Norton has just come to the end of her Presidential Year and she will shortly be distributing funds to her nominated charities. Meanwhile we have been continuing – for the third year - to raise funds for the children’s home in Beirut – The Home of Hope - which cares for displaced children from the streets, many of whom originate from Syria, and we are working with Beirut Cosmopolitan Rotary Club as well as the local churches and other groups here in Sudbury. We were pleased to receive a very generous donation recently from Haverhill Methodist Church where one of our Rotarians is a member. During the coming year we will be continuing the Purple 4 Polio campaign in and around Sudbury (watch this space). We participate in an international Rotary scheme called “Lend with Care” where we provide and administer small sums as start-up loans for entrepreneurs in a range of countries in the third world. The loans are repaid once the businesses have got going and we are then able to offer loans to other new “start-ups” using the same funds. The sums are small in UK terms but can be extremely valuable in these countries. We have provided loans in countries such as Benin, Cambodia, Ecuador, Malawi, the Philippines and Zambia where individuals have opened stores and market stalls, raised poultry and other farming activities and set up an internet café. Our programme for the next twelve months is now being drawn up. In July we have a presentation about Rotary Foundation’s work nationally and overseas, the annual lunch at the Cricket Club and a visit to a performance of “As you like it” at Kentwell Hall. Looking further ahead, Jane Hatton will be telling us about “Beat the Street”, an initiative to encourage us to walk and exercise more and this is coming to Sudbury and Cornard in the Autumn. We will be hearing about the plans to reinstate bells at Little Cornard church and a visit to Gainsborough’s House is planned. October sees a talk about magic and the following month we will be hearing about Long Melford’s parish records. Then the Christmas season will be upon us once again, with the annual Schools Concert, the Christmas Tree Festival and the Tree of Memories and Santa’s Grotto which this year will be in a new location (again, watch this space!) In the new year we have speakers already booked from Fulibroch Dairy, down the road in Bures (think goat’s milk and many other natural products) and from Bulmer Brick and Tile. As you can see we have a varied programme, supplemented by our various fund-raising efforts including responses to emergencies as well as “fun and fellowship”. The weekly meetings are very worthwhile and are an opportunity to keep in touch with fellow members from all walks of life. We meet on Mondays at the Mill Hotel, 1230 for 1 pm, If you would like to come along to one of our meetings or events to see what we are like, why not contact our secretary Roger Green on 07787 470876 or look us up on our website. We would love to see you and you can be assured of a warm welcome Rotarian Tony Platt

Can you help Pamela? I would be very interested to hear from are any former students of Sudbury Girls High School 1960-1972 who might be interested in holding a reunion at some time. April Cottage Cattery is a purpose built licenced boarding cattery for cats only

The family owned, multi award-winning Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa has entered into an exciting new venture in association with the US Airbase at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. They are the first private company to secure a contract to run a restaurant on the base. The launch of the new Medana Mediterranean Kitchen restaurant took place on 8th June and around 150 of the Lakenheath residents and staff enjoyed a delicious buffet style lunch following speeches and the cutting of the ribbon by Managing Director of Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Susanna Rendall, and Colonel David Eaglin, 48th Fighter Wing Vice Commander. The restaurant builds on the excellent reputation created at its two AA Rosette Lakes Restaurant at Stoke by Nayland. It will be serving top quality Northern Mediterranean style cuisine for lunch as a buffet, and for dinner with a la carte menu and waiter service. It will be accessible to up to 16,000 staff and residents at both the RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall bases. 48 Force Support Commander, Major Sean Brazel said “The Medana Restaurant offers our Airmen a unique dining experience and gives the 48 Fighter Wing an opportunity to enjoy the very best in Mediterranean cuisine prepared by the excellent team from Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf &Spa All Suffolk Chamber members in the catering sector were alerted to the tendering process by Suffolk Chamber of Commerce’s B2B platform. Chief Executive John Dugmore, who holds an honorary position at the base and was a guest at the launch, explained the Chamber’s reaction to this news and its role: “This is a great ‘win’ for a fantastic local company. We are absolutely delighted for them. “Obviously, Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa won this contract entirely on their own merits, but we are delighted to have been a facilitator in getting them and our colleagues at RAF Lakenheath together in the first place. Susanna Rendall, Managing Director of Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa said; We really appreciated the initial introduction to this opportunity by Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and we were delighted to win the contract in the face of some very tough competition. We are looking forward to working with the team at RAF Lakenheath and are pleased that the excellent menu, which has been created and prepared by our skilful Executive Head Chef, Alan Paton, and enthusiastic and professional team from Stoke by Nayland, has been so well received on the base. Peter Thorogood... “Politicians are the same all over, they promise to build a bridge even when there is no river.” Nikita Khrushchev. Well, thankfully the European Referendum has run its course. The absence of informed debate, scaremongering tactics and mistruths from both sides beggars belief. As usual our leaders confirmed my low estimation of their qualities. We have the Kinnock clan (who would have been bettered advised to keep a low profile) pontificating whilst trousering millions from Europe and a cove called Gove (has he really left school?) preaching Brexit. And our government spend over £9 million of our money (that’s a hospital or a few public sector pensions) on a propaganda leaflet having previously promised not to do so. They are such an unattractive and distasteful bunch and prove the old adage “The problem with political jokes is that they get elected”. My last visit to the polls was actually in 1975 to vote in favour of admission to the then Common Market gullibly believing that we would pay the same for fags and drink as our French neighbours. I was lied to then and am now, therefore refusing to trust any politician of whatever level since. And the trouble with them is that like baboons, the higher they climb the tree the more obvious their unattractive assets appear. On the subject of pamphlets I am now in receipt of a grandiosely titled leaflet “Building a Sustainable Future” issued jointly by those bastions of openness and efficiency Babergh and Mid Suffolk DCs.Yes, the same authorities working in tandem despite the fact that in 2011 the electorate of Babergh (that’s you lot) voted by 61% not to combine with. So much for our Councillors listening to the democratic voice of the people. However, what really irks is the content. I quote “New housing development will largely take place in our market towns so that they become more vibrant and prosperous….” and “We are working to secure extra investment in schools, healthcare and public transport services”. Now the biggest porky of all “We have been talking to our local communities…” Not in Sudbury they ain’t. Citizens’ views ignored at misnamed public consultations whilst councillors imposed decisions already made by Babergh regarding our bus park. Certain councillors refusing to back plans to retain our stretched fire services. A private developer given permission to demolish Bel Vue with apparently no conditions regarding the preservation of iconic stained glass and panelling. “Extra investment in health care”, that from an authority that have allowed the destruction of two hospitals (and the land to build such a facility) in favour of but a clinic. And finally, with up to 2000 new homes in the Sudbury area alone, a Saxon street grid with not a plan for a bypass in sight, an abundance of charity shops, no court house and a part time police service. Surely, before any further housing expansion is approved those same compliant councillors should go back to their political chums at Suffolk and Whitehall and demand that our small, beautiful part of Britain receives the heavy investment we so desperately require. Infrastructure before any further expansion should be their aim. But then, what do I know? So England’s reputation for tolerance and decency is now confirmed by the antics of our soccer supporters in France. No, it’s not their fault, blame the Russian paramilitaries I hear the excuse.Yet so far a number of our thugs have been found guilty of bottle throwing etc. by the French courts. It’s never their fault, despite the images of flag clad drunks besmirching our name. I was resident in Rotterdam in 1974 when Spurs fans decided to introduce the Dutch to football hooliganism, and then in Dublin in 1995 when the same like minded low life decided to trash that most hospitable of cities. Do they not realise the enmity they cause? When I revisited bars where I had, as a regular, been most welcome, as an Englishman I was met with indifference and hostility. The shame they bring to my country is irreparable. For nearly 60 years I have both played and followed Rugby with chums of all nationalities, sitting and drinking with the greatest of company. Only once have I observed a violent incident (off the pitch that is!). Some years ago at Twickenham I observed (with much glee) one welshman punch another over some slight regarding I think a local sheep of fair appearance. Although I find it pleasurable when the Celts result to fisticuffs this has been the only unsavoury incident I have observed. So when these thugs are identified how about naming and shaming them in their local communities or would that have the same effect as the useless ASBO’s giving them notoriety and fame? I was once moved to utter that it was America that progressed from barbarity to decadence without the benefit of civilisation, but sadly this silver pearl of ours is fast heading towards that downward slope. Off for a Guinness or three whilst I leave you to ponder. Peter Thorogood All threats and light insults to mandpthorogood@gmail.com

A little of your time can go a long way Do you have a little spare time to help make a big difference to wildlife? The RSPB Stour reserve team protect and look after over 100ha of nature reserves in Suffolk and North Essex ranging from the Ancient woodland of Wolves Wood near Ipswich, Cattawade Marsh a wader haven just outside Manningtree, Stour Wood near Wrabness and Flatford Wildlife Garden. The reserve team is made up of just five staff and a group of dedicated volunteers. Without this valuable gift of time from volunteers we would be unable to carry out much of the work on the reserves. RSPB volunteers come from all different walks of life with different skills and experience but between them they give hundreds of hours to help protect wildlife and connect people to nature. Got a few hours spare? Volunteers are needed to help patrol Wolves Wood, near Ipswich and Stour Woods, near Wrabness. It’s a great excuse to get out in to the countryside for a walk and directly help look after a couple of special reserves. Got a day or two free? Flatford Wildlife Garden has volunteering opportunities in the Visitor Welcome team . You’ll be inspiring visitors to give nature a home in their own gardens and to support the RSPBs work through membership and Brushcutter work at donations. If you fancy getting your hands Wolves Wood – RSPB volunteers can learn new dirty Flatford Wildlife Garden also has space in the Gardening volunteer team who keep the skills. garden in top condition. Horticultural experience isn’t essential put you’ll need to be reasonably fit and mobile. Got some carpentry experience that you’re willing to share? We’ve got a well equipped workshop in Brantham and are currently looking for a skilled carpentry volunteer to help with tasks around the reserves from small maintenance jobs to big projects. Got time for a big commitment? A volunteer co-ordinator is needed to help expand and support the volunteer teams at the Stour Estuary reserves. Volunteers are hugely important to what we do and you’ll be at the heart of it. It’s a big job and a big time commitment but we’re sure the right person is out there somewhere. How do I get involved? New Powers to tackle Fly Tipping New powers came into force in May 2016 that allow local authorities to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to any person found to have fly-tipped. Any person issued one of the new Fixed Penalty Notices for fly-tipping would then have 14 days to comply by paying £200, which is reduced to £120 if paid within 10 days, although individual local authorities will have the power to fix the level of the penalty at up to £400. Failure to comply with the notice may result in prosecution proceedings, which in the event of a conviction by a Magistrates Court can result in a maximum fine of £50,000 and / or a prison sentence of 6 months being imposed, with Crown Courts able to impose even steeper penalties of up to 5 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine. Householders also have a legal duty of care to ensure that their waste does not end up being fly-tipped and can be prosecuted and fined up to £5,000 if convicted by a Court for failing to fulfil this duty. So to stay safe, always carry out the following SCRAP checks when arranging for your rubbish to be removed by anyone other than your local district or borough council: • Suspect - Beware of rogue waste carriers – reputable companies do not usually make direct approaches. If in any doubt as to whether someone is a legitimate waste carrier, do not allow them to take your waste. • Check - Ask for their waste carrier registration details. You can verify them by visiting the online register at https://environment.data.gov.uk/publicregister/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers or by calling 03708 506 506. Note down the registration number of the vehicle used to take your waste away. • Refuse – Any unsolicited offers to have any rubbish taken away. Always carry out your own research and choose who you wish to approach. • Ask questions - Always ask what exactly is going to happen to your rubbish and seek evidence that it is going to be disposed of appropriately. A legitimate, professional waste carrier who wants your business should not object to being asked reasonable questions. • Paperwork - Make sure you get a proper receipt containing the written information for your waste. This should include what has been removed and where it will be going. Make sure the Company or tradesman’s details are included. If you see someone dumping rubbish, please report it to your local council along with any details that might help us to identify and trace those responsible, including the registration of any vehicle involved: • Babergh District Council 01473 826622 • Mid Suffolk District Council 0845 606 6170 • Ipswich Borough Council 01473 433115

News from Sudbury Library The Friends of Sudbury have submitted an application to become a member of the IPS the cooperative that are now being so successful in running and keeping open all the Suffolk Libraries. We are beginning to plan our events for the autumn which will include a quiz and we hope an evening of photography with a speaker and a competition based on the theme of Sudbury and the surrounding countryside. We are also hoping to host small art exhibitions. There were 14000 visits to the Library in May. The top three non- fiction paper backs were ‘A girl on the Train’ by Paula Hawkins, ‘Wake’ by Anna Hope and ‘The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle’ by Kirstie Wark - these are all good reads why not call in and find a good book to relax with. The school holidays will soon be here and the Staff are planning “The Big Friendly Read” for children from the 16th July to 3rd September. Entry is free and you need to sign up and read up to six books, more information on the website bigfriendlyread.org.uk and at www.sole.us.read.

Golf Knocked For Six By Sally It was not cricket – but it was not golf either! Sports became somewhat confused at the Newton Green lady captain’s day of Sally Cade when members of the golf club decided to celebrate the occasion with a tribute to her second sport. A 12-handicap golfer, recently retired Colchester sports teacher Sally is a cricket coach. Her late father Ken Taylor played for Warwickshire and was Nottinghamshire manager (1978-90). She and husband Peter, whose wedding reception was at Trent Bridge, now follow Essex cricket, and were recently in New Zealand to see the World Cup. As a result of all these cricket connections, Sally was persuaded to don pads and waive a bat as she led her captain’s day celebrations. Lady members then got down to the serious part of the day, golf, playing 18 hole 4 ball better ball with the aid of a piece of string, paying for drives to be taken by Sally, or a male member of the Club who shall remain nameless. The proceeds for these privileges went to the Captains’ Charity, the Sudbury Kernos Centre. Results: 53 points Jill Symonds and Lizzie Johnson, 52 ocb Laura Lowe and Susan Sills, 52 Adrienne Hughes and Gwyneth Ferriera. Front nine, Pat Walsh and Pat Hawkins 28. Back nine Di Cunningham and Leighann Wordley 27. Nearest pin 13th hole Jenny Wilkins. Nearest pin on 6th Laura Lowe. The day would not have been such a success without hard work put in by many members but especially Ladies Vice-Captain, Rebecca Evans, the men who helped with serving refreshments, ladies who provided refreshments.

Fred’s 40ft French Connection A stunning 40 foot putt on the first play-off hole sent Newton Green seniors into the last eight of the Suffolk Parks Trophy. The home pairing of Fred French and Nick Smith was sent out to contest the sudden death play off, and with the former sinking a monster Team, left to right: Fred French, Mike putt to win the stroke index Barnes, Ian Duncan (non playing three first hole, the home side captain), Steve Cragg, Peter Philpott, was through to entertain Nick Smith, Ken Goodright, Brian Joy Haverhill or Flynn Valley in the and David Slater. the next round.
