Relaunch of fundraiser to support Community Projects

AFC director Keith Morris, with club captain Sam Clarke at the launch of the Gold Lottery at the Wardale Williams Stadium

Ryman League Club AFC Sudbury has rebranded its Gold Lottery and is now widely publicising the scheme in the hope of raising thousands of pounds for projects to support young people in Sudbury and the surrounding area. Its first aim is to raise money to buy a minibus to provide transport for the club’s teams, including its youth teams. The vehicle would also be used for the club’s numerous community activities. Future funds from the Gold Lottery will go towards supporting the club’s expanding academy. The academy was launched in 2014 – in partnership with the Ormiston Sudbury Academy - to provide 16 to18 year olds with nationally recognised qualifications in both the sporting and academic sector. The academy operates on a full-time basis and currently offers two year courses for up to 30 people. Keith Morris, club director, said: “We have a very strong community ethos at the club and we know we have an important role to play in supporting young people in the area. The Gold Lottery has fallen a little flat lately, so we have decided to give it a really big push. We have rebranded the scheme to create awareness within the club and across the community to encourage more participation. The success of the relaunch will determine the future projects the club can introduce for young people and the community.â€?The Gold Lottery will be drawn each week, with a first prize of ÂŁ100.00, plus other cash prizes. People can join the scheme for as little as ÂŁ1 per week. For more information telephone AFC Sudbury on 01787 376213 or email www.keith.priory@googlemail.com

Bridge Project CEO becomes a lunch delivery service user

Left to right - Anesta Newson (CEO Bridge Project), Karl Ellis, Mark Sinfield, Kingsley Everett, Boyd Robinson and Judith Shallow (Suffolk High Sheriff) Following a recent operation, Anesta Newson founder and CEO of Sudbury charity The Bridge Project experienced life on the receiving end of one of its services: hot lunch deliveries. Anesta said “I recently had an operation and had to keep my foot elevated for four days, so I took the decision to try out our service and be on the receiving end of it for once. As well as getting delicious, home-cooked food every day, getting lunch deliveries meant that I didn't have to worry about shopping and cooking, and was able to recover much more quickly. I also have to add that the customer service I got was second to none, and it was a pleasure to see some smiling faces every day!” The Bridge Project started offering hot lunch deliveries for local elderly or housebound people in 2009. After years of hard work by their own fleet of drivers, and following support from Sudbury Waitrose, who volunteer a delivery van and driver every week, The Bridge Project has been able to expand its delivery round to support even more people in the Sudbury and Great Cornard area. The successful partnership between The Bridge Project and Sudbury Waitrose led to the organisations winning the Suffolk Corporate Community Partnership of the Year at the High Sheriff Awards 2015. To mark this achievement, Judith Shallow Suffolk High Sheriff joined a lunch run with Waitrose on the 25th November. The service helps to support many elderly people in Sudbury, as well as people who have become housebound. It is also available to people for a period of time after being discharged from hospital to aid recovery. Once registered for hot lunch deliveries, users are able to request meals on a flexible basis and deliveries can be made as and when required. The Bridge Project's hot lunch deliveries is a well loved service within the Sudbury community as it once came to the aid of a resident of the town after they had a fall at home and were unable to make anyone aware. Thanks to this service, The Bridge Project were able to help the person and inform their family. As well as offering regular support to a number of local people, hot lunch deliveries become even more important in the winter months when weather conditions often make it difficult for elderly and/or frail people to go shopping or to prepare their own meals. As such, The Bridge Project is appealing for more volunteer drivers to come forward to help cover extra demand throughout this period. If you would like to volunteer to aid with lunch deliveries, please get in touch with The Bridge Project on 01787 313691 or email: info@bridgeproject.co.uk.

By Emma Reid, Family Law Solicitor at Holmes & Hills Happy New Year.....or is it – what if 2015 has passed and you’ve decided you want to make 2016 different? Separation and/or divorce are always a big step and it not just the emotional worry and concerns – if you have children, how will they cope? What about the relationship with the extended family? There are also the practical considerations – can I run the home on my own? Can I afford it? How will I balance the children and work? Is there life after divorce? The answer to the emotional questions can very much depend on how you deal with raising the issue. Hostility and angst are only likely to lead to more of the same. If your relationship is genuinely beyond repair then broaching the subject with compassion to the other party’s feelings is far more likely to lead to an agreed resolution than an abrupt and callous ending. Quite often one party feels unhappy for sometime but the other has no inkling they feel that way and any suggestion of parting ways is a complete shock. If there are children, then ensuring they are told about your decision as sensitively as possible, and that your separation has no impact on how much you love them, can only help in the long run. Remember you loved each other once and the children are the most precious and important thing your relationship has achieved. There is likely to be some changes and initial difficulties, as you get used to a new way of life but yes, you can cope and you are stronger than you believe. Peace of mind and actually making a decision, especially when you’ve been undecided for sometime, can make a huge difference to how you feel and on your wellbeing. At Holmes & Hills Solicitors, all our family lawyers have many years experience and are members of Resolution and therefore committed to dealing with matters in as amicable and non-confrontational way as possible. We can support you through the process to get the outcome you want to achieve. If matters cannot be agreed by negotiation and agreement then we can guide, advise and represent you through any Court proceedings, whether relating to the children, finances or both. If you are considering separation or believe your spouse maybe considering this, we would urge you to obtain early legal advice on the options available to you. Holmes & Hills offer a fixed fee initial consultation, giving you the time you need to discuss your options, possible ways forward and to get the advice you need – for just £100 plus VAT. Holmes & Hills, 96 North Street, Sudbury CO10 1RF 01787 275275

Chase away the Winter Blues Learn a New Craft

If the dark days of winter get you down, now is a good time to try learning something new. Clare runs friendly, relaxed workshops in felt-making, weaving without a loom, arm-knitting and spinning. As a qualified teacher, she likes to keep the groups small so that everyone has the best chance of success. ‘I really enjoy the social contact as well as seeing the pleasure everyone gets from making something beautiful,’ says Clare. Last year a new dimension was added to the workshops with the arrival of three alpacas, Clement, Norman and Fergus. You can now come and meet the animals before making something using their incredibly soft fleece. Experienced with teaching people of all ages, Clare offers workshops for both adults and children. These are run at various venues around Sudbury including her home in Great Waldingfield, but she can travel to run workshops for schools or private groups. If you are interested, further details of upcoming workshops can be found on her website www.craftclasseswithclare.co.uk or you can email craftclasseswithclare@hotmail.co.uk.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Have you Humans made a New Year's resolution? I got the wrong end of the stick when the girls were talking about improving themselves and thought they wanted new shelves! Anyway, like my friend Lizzie, I’m going to travel more, starting with visiting some of my fellow Community News contributors, if they let me in! There are lots of interesting people and places in our area and I hope to meet some of them soon. Back at SESAW we were local wildlife guru George Millins with amazed to hear £3635 was his stalwart assistant, Jules Mowbray at raised at our Christmas Fair in the SESAW Christmas Fair in the Old Long Melford plus £1220 from School, Long Melford. the Annual Grand Draw. On behalf of the animals, we thank everyone who attended this event and helped make it such a success. Even Ollie (the Black) Cat was impressed! Which reminds me, we still have Max and Millie, a pair of young, unwanted black and white cats that have been with us since they were born. I’ll tell you about more animals next month but Ollie and I think Mum deserves some “down time” so SESAW will be closed until Saturday 30th January. Not that she will put her feet up while there are dogs to walk and feed, kennels to clean, plus Ollie’s friends in the cattery, all the birds, farm animals - and Ron. “Him indoors” says he needs looking after too! Rehoming of animals already chosen will continue and we will still attend to phone messages and emergencies. A Happy and Healthy New Year to you and watch this space for reports from Kenny through the Keyhole, aka Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua

Remember to Recycle your Christmas Tree! Once the festive fun is over, residents across Babergh and Mid Suffolk are reminded that they can recycle their Christmas tree at a number of convenient collection points across both districts. Residents can leave their real Christmas trees at any of the many drop-off points across the two districts. Details of which can be found here: www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/christmas-tree-recycling/ www.babergh.gov.uk/waste-services/christmas-tree-recycling/ Once collected, the trees will be chipped and composted at a local composting facility to produce a soil conditioner for the benefit of other plants and trees in the future. Alternatively, for those residents who have a garden waste collection, real trees can be placed beside the brown bins for pick up during the whole of January. Cllr David Burn, Mid Suffolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Environmental Services said, “I hope that everyone will make this a truly green Christmas by making full use of all the facilities to recycle everything from wrapping paper to real trees in an effort to help reduce the extra waste generated over the festive season.” Cllr Frank Lawrenson, Babergh District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment said, “When it’s time to get rid of your real Christmas tree we would urge people to take advantage of our recycling scheme. This not only helps us to reduce the amount of unnecessary waste that goes to landfill, but also means your tree can be chipped and composted before being used as a soil conditioner” Over the festive period there will be changes to the usual bin collection days across both the Babergh and Mid Suffolk Districts. Babergh and Mid Suffolk will not be sending out 2016 waste collection calendars to all residents this year but it is easy to download a copy from our website here Mid Suffolk District Council www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/assets/UploadsMSDC/Environment/WasteDelivery/MSDC-Calendar-2015-2016.pdf Babergh District Council www.babergh.gov.uk/assets/Uploads-BDC/Environment/WasteDelivery/BDC-Calendar-2015-2016.pdf

New Afternoon Tea experience at Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa Choose from Traditional, Savoury or High Tea A new, and totally indulgent, afternoon tea experience with traditional, savoury and high tea options is being introduced at the 15th century Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa in the New Year. Each menu will be served course-by-course at tables with pristine white tablecloths in the hotel’s elegant AA two rosette Gallery restaurant. The tempting delights will be offered on bespoke Royal Worcester fine bone china, specially commissioned for The Swan from Walpole of Stoke-on-Trent finished in translucent white with delicate gold decoration. Walpole’s expertise has been developed over several years, supplying some of the most prestigious brands in ceramics as well as special commissions for the Royal palaces. The Traditional Afternoon Tea starts with a selection of finger sandwiches followed by raisin and apple and walnut scones with clotted cream and house made jam and preserves. The third course is a delicious choice of individual cakes and patisseries, all served with a choice from 22 fine teas or infusions by Newby’s of London. The Swan’s specialist Tea Sommeliers will be on hand to recommend the ideal blend for each guest. Savoury Afternoon Tea also begins with the finger sandwiches and includes the Newby’s of London teas but that’s where the similarities end. The sweet scones are replaced with Parma ham and sage and tomato and parmesan scones with basil butter, and instead of the cakes there is a choice of tasty savouries. These include a smoked coronation chicken tart with yoghurt; peppered mackerel, Innes log goats cheese with beetroot tapenade and smoked salmon with crab blinis and caviar. Guests booking the High Tea can choose from six savoury dishes to start such as a Dingley Dell Scotch egg; smoked salmon and chive omelette or crab cakes with champagne beurre blanc; there’s also a vegetarian option of port soaked blue cheese with salt baked beets. Scones with cream and jam and a selection of cakes follow, plus the choice of teas. Served between 12 noon and 5pm, Monday to Saturday from January, the Traditional and Savoury Afternoon Teas are priced at £19.50 per person, while the High Tea is £26.50. A glass or bottle of sparkling Champagne, as recommended by the Swan’s Head Sommelier, can be added for an extra treat or celebration. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Happy new year, Readers! Did you eat too much over Christmas? The beauty of being a simulator (yes, that’s what I am, just like the big one at Wattisham that trains the Apache helicopter pilots) is that I don’t need any food during the school holidays. Unlike my friends in the Shelley herd who need hay, water and checking over right throughout the long winter weeks. A group of dedicated volunteers keeps their show on Camilla earning her keep the road even when the Centre is shut; the ponies are very grateful to it. Since we have been closed to our special riders for the last four weeks there isn’t much to report until all our friends return for yet more physiotherapy and fun back here at the yard. Are you on our waiting list? Margaret tells me it’s a long one, but don’t despair, she is adept at squeezing people in wherever she can. The reason we have a frog in this month’s blog is that the old subject of FROG RACING has come up again! Last year’s race had to be postponed, so this is your chance to enjoy a very funny evening whilst raising money to keep my greedy friends in the manner to which they have become accustomed. (It costs almost £75,000 per annum!) I’m glad to say you won’t be racing real froggies, thank goodness, but you do get a chance to name the ten frogs in every race. Got some good ideas? I’m planning to call mine ‘Black Beauty ‘of course, so don’t choose that please. The date of the social event of the year is February 27th, tickets cost £12.50, and a call to Di Godfrey on 01473 658 552 will secure your place. Bring a table of friends and have a real laugh. Our own volunteers at the Centre have also been working hard to raise cash. People had to guess the weight of a gorgeous Christmas cake; there was a lucky dip from the contents of someone’s attic; there was a sale of delicious Christmas puddings. Each ‘day’ has been asked to come up with an idea for making money and there are plenty of inventive schemes afoot. So watch this space. Till February then, and thank you for reading my blog this month, have a really good 2016. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Taking pride in keeping Suffolk safe

SUFFOLK CONSTABULARY Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team Whilst I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year, I must also say that 2016 is one for change as far as Suffolk Police and your local Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Police Stations are concerned. I expect most of you have heard on the radio, seen on local TV and read in the media, that Suffolk Police are having to restructure and enforce job cuts due to the need to make savings of £20.5 million from its budget by 2020. What effect does this have on your community? 1. Safer Neighbourhood Teams will reduce from 29 to 18. 2. PCSO’s will be cut from 166 to 98 3. 26 Police Officers will not be replaced when they retire or leave in the next four months. 4. Only 3 main Police Stations will open their doors to the members of the Public: - Ipswich (Museum Street), Lowestoft and Bury. Community policing is the most crucial link between the Police and the Public. This loss of ground level community contact is where the Police learn about people we live amongst, and pick up information that can be developed to fight crime and reduce risks to us all in todays changed world. Therefore, the loss of public access to Police Stations and PCSO’s to your community will mean that it will be more challenging to maintain our current links with the public. In real terms, for us the Safer Neighbourhood Team at Hadleigh/Capel (Babergh East) in the new restructure will consist of:- 1 x Sgt, 2 x PC’s, 4 x PCSO’s . Safer Neighbourhood Team at Sudbury, (Sudbury & Cornard, Babergh West SNT will consist of:- 1 x Sgt, 3 x PC’s, 5 x PCSO’s Whilst this uncertainty affects us immediately, we will of course keep you updated once decisions / areas / cover and response is finalised. Members of the public are still encouraged to report crime to us via 101 for non-emergency calls and 999 for emergency calls. Hopefully, until next month, please feel free to contact us at Babergh East with any issues you may have. PCSO 3108 Mandy Coleman

News from Sudbury Rotary Club First a Happy New Year from Sudbury Rotary Club. Why not make a New Year’s Resolution to come along to one of our lunchtime meetings and see what they are like. We meet every Monday at the Mill Hotel at 12.30pm, for lunch and a chance to meet each other. Often, speakers are invited and in January these include Robert Spivey talking about charitable work in Mali on 4th January and Clive Sorrell, a local author, whose topic is “Faction to Fiction” on 18th January. Rotary aims to serve communities, both locally and across the world. December was once again a busy month, in the run-up to Christmas. The annual Schools Concert on Monday 7th December was particularly successful. Children from four primary schools took part: St Gregory’s, Pot Kiln, Woodhall and Bulmer – we are lucky to have such enthusiastic and talented youngsters in our midst – and raised over £700 towards our charities. With Sudbury Talbot, our sister club in Sudbury, we organised the Christmas Tree Festival in St Peters from 9th to 13th December and Father Christmas and his grotto was seen – and we believe, enjoyed! – at various locations around the town. Members and their partners and friends subsequently relaxed on the Monday evening before Christmas to enjoy a Christmas Dinner at the Mill Hotel, where we were welcomed by the children’s choir from St Gregory’s Primary school As well as our lunchtime meetings, we hold both fund-raising and fun events (often the same thing!) throughout the year. If you would like more information contact our secretary Roger Green on 07787 470876 or look us up on our website. http://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=503 or Google Sudbury Rotary Club. South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge with students from the academy at AFC Sudbury. A flourishing educational academy at a non-league football club has been highly praised by South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge. The MP met students from the academy during a recent tour of AFC Sudbury’s state-of-the-art Wardle Williams Stadium, where the educational programme is based. The academy was launched in July 2015– in partnership with the Ormiston Sudbury Academy - to provide 16 to18 year olds with nationally recognised qualifications in both the sporting and academic sector. The Academy operates on a full-time basis and currently offers three year courses with an intake of up to thirty students per year. After watching the students take part in a training session Mr Cartlidge said: “Having seen the new Academy in action I am impressed that the club not only provides high quality football coaching but also places as much emphasis on the student’s education. This approach will ensure the students have the opportunity to move on to university or have the qualifications that will enable them to work in the sports industry at the end of their three year course.’’ The South Suffolk MP was also shown around the club’s multi-million stadium and its new 3G pitch as part of the tour. As a keen sportsman himself the MP could not resist a ‘kick about’ on the new FIFA approved surface. “I am very impressed with the facilities provided by AFC Sudbury. The modern club house, changing rooms, academy building and public facilities all complimented by the fantastic new 3G FIFA 2 all-weather stadium pitch. The set up must be some of the best in non-league football,” he added.

Holmes & Hills Solicitors, has been recognised by The Legal 500 as a leading source of legal advice in the region for four consecutive years. The Legal 500 has recognised the firm as being among the best firms of solicitors is the South East for the supply of legal advice relating to Commercial Property, Personal Injury and Planning Law. This recognition is supported by Chambers & Partners listing Holmes & Hills’ highly regarded Planning & Development Team as being one of the best in East Anglia, for the second consecutive year. In ranking Holmes & Hills’ Planning & Development Team as one of the best teams of Planning Law advisors in the region, The Legal 500 stated: “department head David Whipps and Steven Hopkins are the partner-level contacts in an exceptionally large and experienced team, which also includes Tom McPhie and Jo Lilliott, the latter singled out for her ‘exceptional knowledge of s.106 agreements, community infrastructure levies and highways law’.” As well as being recognised as a leading law firm by these prestigious publications, Holmes & Hills is also listed by Planning Magazine – a leading industry magazine – as having one of the best teams of specialist Planning Law solicitors in the UK, alongside international law firms. These recent announcements provide our clients with the reassurance that the advice and representation they receive from us is independently recognised as being of the best available in the marketplace. This combined with a competitive fee structure and our lawyers’ commercial, pragmatic approach to addressing clients’ needs, has facilitated growth for the firm, as well as supported a growing reputation across the region.” In commenting on Holmes & Hills’ team of Planning Law specialists, Chambers & Partners stated the team is a: “Highly regarded specialist planning team acting for a range of clients including local authorities and developers as well as private individuals. Provides expert advice on planning enforcement matters in addition to Section 106 agreements.” Commenting on the Head of the team, David Whipps, researchers at Chambers & Partners say: “David Whipps is a strong advocate and successfully advises clients on all areas of planning. ‘He’s got all the qualities you would need in a good practical planning lawyer’, states one source; ‘good common sense, sound working knowledge of the law, a good insight into clients and an approachable manner.’” www.sudburycommunitynews.co.uk

Peter Thorogood... Bejasus, I am Starting to like the Fellow Down at the Reptile House there pointlessly exists a heavily funded body grandiosely entitled “The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority”. Of course, were they honourable there would be no requirement for such an expensive accessory. However, their remit was to expose all Parliamentary wrongdoing and excesses and to publicly disclose the outcome of all investigations. They lied! It now appears that those who seek to break the rules and rob their constituents can, when fingered, repay their ill-gotten gains in secret lest their reputations be tarnished. So when next some poor single parent or pensioner is driven to lift some necessity from the local supermarket and gets apprehended, don’t worry love, just cough up and go home lest your name be ridiculed. Now one fellow whose parsimonious and honest reputation stands scrutiny is yer actual leader of HM’s opposition, Jeremy Corbyn. Surely any fellow who has raised the ire of both the Tory press and half his own party can’t be all bad. Courageously he stood against the bombing of Syria stating that such military action never won a war. Historically of course he’s right, both Vietnam and the London Blitz come to mind, so eventually the campaign against ISIS, or whatever they are called this month, will require “boots on the ground”. Surely the recent lessons learnt in Iraq and Afghanistan gives the Anti War group some credence. And now his stance has brought down the wrath of one of his own breed, a creature termed The Honourable Tristram Hunt, yet another Labour MP who has never left school. I ask you “The Honourable Tristram!” what sort of socialist is that? Like Military Intelligence, domestic bliss or civil servant, a complete oxymoron. Now closer to home have you noticed that our Sudbury Steering Group have gone to ground, maybe they are hibernating for the winter. I trust they will soon stir to regenerate our town centre. The so called public consultation seemed to do its job with a 100% opposition to the splitting or moving of our bus park from the Hamilton Road area, which will be obviously ignored by those who (never using a bus) know better. Now this condition seems set in stone by Babergh who state that no developer will be interested if the buses stay on site. Their knowledge of retail economics is restricted to a weekly shop at Tesco’s. Those same officers have rarely toiled in the commercial world. The footfall of bus passengers would surely be of attraction to any retailer, and provide passenger access to any cinema from our neighbouring villages. Stephen Thorpe, although retired, is a well qualified architect and as a member of the Sudbury Society has formulated an imaginative enough scheme to retain bus services and greatly enhance the area. But of course, as it was not expensively drawn up by Babergh or Suffolk Councils it is not deemed worthy of consideration! Come on Councillors, show some backbone, stand up to Babergh, and tell them that your constituents have no desire to see our bus services cannibalised or displaced to pastures new. All can be accommodated within the massive development area for the good of all. And above all else, please get on with it, we mean you well, someone has to show the gumption to urgently regenerate our wonderful town. Now we can await with pleasure the annual New Years carnival when our Mayor and the great and good are wheeled out by the local press, photographed, and asked “What do you want for Sudbury in 2016?” Of course, the usual platitudes regarding a cinema, less charity shops, even a by-pass. Well get on with it then, that’s why you’re there! Finally, apologies for a lack of festive mood, but who needs a pantomime when we’ve got politicians? Happy New Year to all my Rantfans. Darren and Gail Happy 50th Birthday Darren and Happy Anniversary to you both, love Mum, Lily and Family.

Help prevent falls and trips Don’t underestimate the consequences of an older person having a fall. A fall can result in broken hips or bones and even early death. In addition to the pain and distress a fall can cause, it can take away someone’s self-confidence, leaving them afraid to go out and socially isolated. The statistics on falls are staggering: • 50% of people aged over 80 suffer a fall each year • 33% of people aged over 65 suffer a fall each year • 1 in 10 elderly falls result in serious injury • 25% of all 999 calls are falls related One way of reducing the chance of falling is by replacing old and worn slippers. Many people have a favourite pair of comfy slippers that could be potentially dangerous. Worn soles can easily lead to a slip and slippers that fit poorly can cause a trip. The safest slippers are those with good quality non-slip rubber soles, are enclosed and have a fastener. So, if you have a pair of old and worn slippers, please think about replacing them. And if you’ve got an elderly friend or relative think about giving them an early Christmas present of a new pair of slippers. It’s almost time for a flu vaccination GPs are encouraging people in at-risk groups to start thinking about getting their winter flu jab. From September GP practices will be contacting patients in at-risk groups, informing them of their entitlement to a free NHS flu vaccination. For your convenience many GP practices will be operating walkin flu clinics. At risk-groups entitled to a free NHS flu vaccination from their GP: • You are aged 65 years or over. • You are pregnant. • You are living in a long-stay residential care home. • You are the carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill. • You are a child aged 2, 3 or 4 years. • You are aged six months to 65 years and have a heart problem; a chest complaint or breathing difficulties including bronchitis and emphysema; a kidney disease; lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment); a liver disease; had a stroke or TIA; diabetes; a neurological condition e.g. multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy; a problem with, or removal of, their spleen e.g. sickle cell disease. If you are someone in an at risk group, or know someone who is, please don’t underestimate how serious flu can be. A serious case of flu could result in bronchitis or pneuomina, a worsening of your diabetes and for pregnant women premature labour or even stillbirth. Suffolk NHS

Sudbury Mayor’s Report December is a busy month for civic activity but quiet on the Town Council front with only the planning meetings taking place, which is just as well, I think I know all of the main carols off by heart having attended several carol services over the last few weeks. That doesn’t mean that nothing has been happening, far from it, the Council have approved costing a business plan for the Delphi club, the club is a major asset for the Town with several hundred using it on a regular basis, but neither Delphi or the Town Council have spent any money on it for several years, so it is in much need of refurbishment and redecoration, but neither will commit to spending any money on it until a business plan has been produced, even then it will have to be justified. Just a brief report about next year’s carnival, the committee has decided on a slight change to the route, instead of starting and finishing at Delphi, it has been decided to start and finish at the Train station, taking the same route around the town with the Belvue Park being used for fair and other entertainment. I attended the Lloyd Grossman book signing at Gainsborough house, Lloyd delivered a talk which had little to do with the book he was signing and selling

but kept the visitors amused for best part of 30 minutes. Anglia Television and Radio Suffolk have taken quite an interest in Sudbury recently and rightly so, taking an interest in how the people and businesses affected by the fire in Friar Street would be affected leading up to Christmas, I am pleased that the Trust has now been set up to distribute the funding to the victims so that they can face this festive period with a little more optimism. I have made the comment before that Quay Lane is one of the most prestigious roads in Sudbury, although a relatively short road it boasts several sports clubs, Cricket, Tennis, Rowing, Canoeing, Bowls with the scouts and many other groups, with the Quay Theatre and Granary on the fringe of the river Stour. I was invited to the Tennis club to take part in the official opening of the new tennis court surface which was made possible with the support of funding from several sources, it has over 100 youngsters learning the skills to become the next champion. In the evening on the same day Maureen and I attended a concert in St Peters where the large audience were entertained by young Male & Female Opera singers who were accompanied by the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. The Christmas Tree Festival organised and run by the Sudbury Rotary & Talbot clubs had 93 entrants this year which was the most in the 13 years it has been running, for those of you who couldn’t get down to see them you missed a real treat, with a dazzling display of lights and imaginative decoration a great deal of effort was put in by all of the clubs, organisations and businesses that took part. We were invited to take part in the Halstead candlelight procession and Carol service in the Park followed by a splendid buffet fit for a Mayor, Halstead and Sudbury have a lot in common being only 7 miles apart they are our nearest Town, several people there commented on our Christmas lights which I think are the best by far than anywhere that I have visited. A meeting has been arranged between the two Council’s to discuss matters of a common interest. I recently attended the Red House Residential Home for their traditional Xmas lunch, I met and enjoyed chatting to some old friends from both the Staff and Residents, judging by the clean plates they all enjoyed the festive meal. I also visited the Sudbury area Cancer support group for the third time and enjoyed a couple of quizzes with the members, friends and families, I am glad I was able to encourage someone to partner me because I would have been embarrassed by my loss of memory. This group has only been running this year and are already seeing their numbers increase as they encourage not only those that have been affected but their carer’s as well, most people recognise and sympathise with the sufferer but pay little attention to their partners and family who are suffering as well, this group are able to help in that situation, another problem that has been recognised is that there are difficulties being so close to the county border as people and groups seem to be forgotten. My recent meet the Mayor Mulled wine, cheese & mince pie morning was a great success thanks to all of the produce being kindly provided by Aldi, Sainsbury, Tesco & Waitrose Supermarkets and cheese & biscuits by Tom from the Market cheese stall not forgetting all of the people who popped in to see me. Maureen and I attended the special Carol Service held in Bury St Edmunds Cathedral followed by Mince pies and Mulled wine with some good friends, that you tend to meet when you are privileged to represent your community as the Mayor. Then off to Somerset to enjoy a pre Xmas get together with the Family, I would have liked to say that it was a restful break but it was far from that, I’m afraid I started Christmas a bit early, ate and drank too much as usual but it starts the festivities off in the right spirit. Popped into the William Woodhouse residential home for their Christmas party and thoroughly enjoyed ‘Barry Tone’ performing his Elvis tribute, all of residents that attended where well rewarded and joined in with the entertainment, a real privilege and pleased to get invited along. Then went along to the Sudbury Hub and enjoyed another Christmas lunch with all of the Carers and ‘customers’ a real treat and feel very humble to be amongst some lovely caring people. Although not a Mayoral event the ‘Car Park Dance group’ had their festive Dance on the 19th of December with over 200 people enjoying the dancing and singing, a great raffle as well with many prizes donated by a number of people with the first prize being a hamper donated by the Cox’s the Market green grocer, which helped raise over £1000 for Guide dogs for the Blind & Macmillan nurses, so a special thanks to them all. Finally I went along to Great Waldingfield village hall to thank my daughter’s, Granddaughter’s and their friends who had organised a table sale to raise funds for my charities, with all money raised being distributed between my 4 local charities. Can I wish you all a very happy and peaceful 2016. Jack Owen, Mayor of Sudbury

On Saturday new Club Captain Ian Thompson hosted the Beaujolais Brunch the first mixed competition of his year. As usual this popular Texas Scramble format attracted a good field on the Gainsborough Course, despite the wet conditions. No team could match the brilliant scoring of the Head family, with some help from Del Prichard. Mum and Dad, Graham and Bonnie Head with daughter Jo Little and Del finished with a nett score of 55.6, nearly four shots ahead of the team in second place. There were also two nearest the pin competitions which were won by Sybil Paton on the 3rd and Tim Dickens on the 7th. After the competition the players all enjoyed an excellent brunch before the prizes were presented by the Captain and the Lady Captain Betty Cox. Results: 1st Graham Head, Del Prichard, Bonnie Head, Jo Little 55.6, 2nd Stuart Lait, Rob Swan, Hannah Moul, Susan Swan 59.5, 3rd Ian McKay, David Close, Barbara Jones, Teresa Close 59.8, 4th Bill Paton, Clive Bentley, Sybil Paton, Margaret Bentley 60.0.

Newton Green’s Carole List to retire Carole List, the manager at Newton Green Golf Club left her post toward the end of the year, after being with the club for 14 years, the last 11 as manager. Speaking of her record, chairman Peter Philpott, said: “With such a wealth of experience Carole will be missed, but she has decided the time is right to enjoy pursue her interests. “Her service to Newton has covered many historic moments during a period of great change within the sport and its administration. “She has seen the club celebrate its centenary in 2007, combat some of the most difficult financial times the sport has encountered, cope with ever more complicated administration requirements, and been at the helm as Newton has developed into one of the most successful and progressive clubs in Suffolk. “Carole’s name will continue to feature in the life of Newton Green, as only last year she presented a trophy in the form of a claret jug for the scratch prize winner in our major golf week competition. “The club’s committee now has to consider the management structure it needs to maintain and develop its progress still further.”

Entertainment provided by Santa’s reindeer, Betty Cox and Anne Hemmings together with Santa, Bev Thomson, on guitar, Box Cox. On Sunday, 13th December, it was the weekend ladies’ chance to enjoy their Christmas celebration and golf. Sadly, due to heavy rain overnight which continued most of the day, the ladies contented themselves with 9 holes of greensomes golf instead of the anticipated 18. A Christmas meal followed the round of golf and the day finished with a celebration of two reindeer (Lady Captain and Vice Captain) together with Santa (Bev Thomson) and Bob Cox on guitar encouraging everyone to join in a Christmas song and ending with two Christmas Carols. The winners of the competition were Tracy Dickens and Claire Nixon, second were Bev Thomson and Janet Hodge and third, Lady Captain Betty Cox and Anne Hemmings. The prizes were presented by the Lady Captain and Club Captain, Ian Thomson.
