The new group exercise studio and Health DQG )LWQHVV FKDQJLQJ URRP LV SDUW RI WKH ¿UVW phase of the £2.4m investment by Babergh District Council – which includes £100,000 provided through Community Infrastructure Levy funds – to modernise leisure facilities in the town; with exercise classes and gym users already using the new space.

To celebrate the completion of this key milestone, community groups across Sudbury and the wider Babergh district are being encouraged to enter a prize draw for free use of the community room which will be available later this year once the works are completed.

Why Your Farmers Market Matters Here at Suffolk Market Events we recently compiled a piece of research based on why markets matter to town and village centres and we found the results were really relevant to Long Melford.

Markets can be a major motivating factor for people to come to a certain location; the presence of a regular traditional market, even if it is classed as a small market, adds diversity to the town or village and encourages local residents as well as visitors from a growing catchment area to stay in that place to shop. This means that markets matter economically as they generate footfall increases helping to increase retail sales not only at the market but also at other shops, pubs and restaurants in the town. This is vital, right now, in Long Melford where shops and other businesses are closing down in shocking numbers.

Markets also matter socially. They are places of social interaction, used by everyone.

Markets are where people of different incomes, ages, genders and cultures can meet together and interact. Since the farmers market in Long Melford started a year ago, we have had some months when there has been a fabulous buzz in the Village Hall with locals and visitors enjoying the fabulous range of stalls and taking time to sit outside and have a coffee. This needs to be a regular occurrence and that can only happen with local support.

When this ‘gathering’ occurs, the market plays a crucial role in giving Long Melford a distinct identity that sets it apart from those villages without such an asset.

Finally, markets matter politically as they promote sustainability. Environmental and ecological beneďŹ ts arise from selling locally-sourced products and through serving local communities who mainly walk or use public transport. Another plus is that markets promote community health; the availability of fresh and affordable food and the opportunity for social interaction helps enhance physical and mental well-being.

Markets shape the world we live in and are part of our cultural heritage. The concept of a ‘market town’ is ancient and familiar and continues to have a profound effect on village, town and city centre performance. We are proud of Long Melford Farmers Market. Photograph of the Month Rotary Club of Sudbury It may seem that Spring is a long way off, but very soon hundreds of purple crocuses planted by members of Sudbury Rotary will be appearing around the town, most especially in Siam Gardens and in the greensward along Melford Road, although some may appear in tubs and front gardens too!

Rotary members from many countries take part in planting purple crocuses as part of their fundraising to eradicate polio throughout the world. This global health initiative begun

by Rotary over 25 years’ ago, has ensured that children in developing countries do not die or become disabled by contracting polio. In the past few years there have been just a handful of cases in countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, but Rotary is working hard to ensure that polio vaccination is available to all children who need this and to ‘End Polio Now!’.

So, when you see the cheerful sight of those purple flowers, you will know that they have helped bring better health and life chances to children in far flung countries.

Why purple you may ask? That is because each child dips their index finger into a purple dye to record the fact they have been vaccinated.

The search now begins for the 2020 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) candidate to be sponsored by the Sudbury Club. UPBEAT� Heart Support receives cheque from Glitz & Glam Dance

What a brilliant night of Big Band music played by “Swing Machine� with lead singer Steve covering some fantastic songs of the 1940’s & 1950’s on Saturday 28th December. The Delphi Centre sparkled with Art Deco table decorations and Hollywood themed stars. An evening of music started with Mayfair Music playing some great movie tracks while guests arrived and settled into their seating. Dances for all tastes were catered for including two sets of 60’s classics from local singer Nettie Osman from Assington.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Ho ho, this is the leap month! I hope the extra day is a bonus to you all, and that people learning their 4 x table enjoy working out other leap years in their lives. Did you know how important maths is in my life? As a simulator I should not be able to work without the computer programme that runs me. My little old friend BABS is entirely electrical mechanical, someone from another age, bless her. But we work together to help those riders who can’t be on a live horse when they come to the Shelley Centre.

You all know how boring the winter months are, what with the dark evenings, the rain and the mud. I can hardly report on anything exciting happening up here since Christmas, and I have to admit that I failed to get 30 people to give me their reasons for being involved here before the year of our 30th anniversary ended. Luckily our umbrella organisation copied my idea and went for 50 people to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Riding for the Disabled Asosiation and the page on their website is truly brilliant. www.rda.org/50faces/ I thought I’d borrow a couple of examples to whet your appetite, or in case you don’t get to browse that page yourself. Ex jockey, now an RDA client: Tyrone Williams: “In my career I rode about 850 winners. When you’re an apprentice, you can’t wait to go racing. 15 years in, it’s just another day. I never got nervous, but I promise you now you’ve got to have bottle. I can’t think about that now.I had a stroke 3 years ago when I was 49. I wasn’t racing anymore but I was still riding out. I couldn’t tell you what happened for the first three months. I didn’t know where I was. Every day after that I’ve been trying to get better.I didn’t know about RDA until I moved back to Lambourn. It’s a big step.

I’d been used to riding horses my whole life but I hadn’t ridden for two years.

I wasn’t sure I could do it. Right from the first day I was determined to walk to the mounting block and leave my wheelchair at the gate. Getting on wasn’t pretty, but we’ve found a way. When I got on that first time I remember feeling so happy and thinking that’s it – I’m back. Coming to RDA is a new step. From where I am now, I can only get better.”

Matt, Para-Showjumper and dressage competitor who is deaf: “So there’s lots of bits to my RDA story, and it’s all really important to me. I think in sign language, then I have to remember the English words and then I have to try and remember the English grammar and what order I should put the words in, and change them from how I have it in sign in my head and put it in English. In my family I am the only one who is deaf. It’s difficult when there’s lots of hearing people and they’re having a conversation and I don’t know what’s going on, or I say something and I’m interrupting because they are talking about something different. The autism also makes it hard for me. I don’t always like being with people all the time. So I suppose now my life is all about the horses, and everything that links with them. We came here when I was six. And I was just happy when I was with the horses. When I started riding I had a leader and side walkers. We went slowly so it was easy for someone to walk next to me and do signing. As I got better and faster that was a bit of a problem! These days I have my own horse and I compete in Para-Showjumping and dressage.

I’m really proud to be a volunteer. When I started I did things like grooming, helping with tacking up, and things around the yard. The aim is to make people aware of what’s happening, to get them involved and get more people to understand what we do.”

Townsfolk are invited to a Tastes of the World experience at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, from 11am to 2pm on Tuesday February 25.

At 11am visitors will have the opportunity of a closeup encounter with the famous alpacas of Clay Farm, Wattisham, whose visit to the home last year was documented on BBC’s The One Show.

Hadleigh Nursing Home was chosen for a trial, using the South Hadleigh Nursing Home staff dressing American breed for pet up for their last international day. therapy sessions, and Manager Tracey Burt, second left. it was shown the gentle animals have an amazingly therapeutic effect on people living with dementia.

From 12.30pm, people will be able to enjoy a Tastes of the World buffet lunch with dishes prepared by the home’s cosmopolitan mix of staff.

Home manager Tracey Burt said: “We have an amazing mix of staff here with nurses and support workers from countries as far afield as the Philippines, Nepal, India, Nigeria, Poland, Rumania, Bulgaria, Lithuania and the US. They will all be dressing up in national costume for the event and contributing to our buffet.”

She said there would be live music with a popular local artist singing songs from around the world.

“All our events are family friendly. Our residents love to meet people from their local community,” she said.

“If you are feeling isolated and want to make new friends, please come along to any of our regular events.

“If you are thinking about a care home for you or your loved ones, our events are a good opportunity to visit us and see how care has changed.”

Collaboration - A better approach to separation Separating from a partner can be an extremely difficult time both emotionally and financially. In )PMMNFT )JMMT )PMNFT )JMMT the past, the more traditional approach to Divorce has been for the parties to resolve their differences in the courtroom, but increasingly, with court delays, this process can often lead to increased stress and cost to both parties.

The premise of dealing with separation ‘collaboratively’ is for the parties to agree to achieve a settlement through collaboration as opposed to making an application to the Family Court.

In the collaborative process, each party instructs a specialist, collaboratively trained divorce lawyer and all negotiations and decision making takes place in a series of four way meetings attended by both parties and their divorce solicitors.

Control is given back to the parties in the divorce to set their own timetable and agenda for these meetings rather than a timetable being imposed by the court. As the parties have a direct input into the agenda they will each be able to discuss issues most pressing to them. It is possible to bring in experts to the four way meetings, where required, such as Independent Financial Advisers to ensure that both parties have the correct assistance to help them make important decisions for the benefit of their family.

There is far more flexibility in the Collaborative process than the more traditional court process and so it can often lead to a speedier resolution of issues and therefore reduced legal fees. If the parties have children it is essential that communication is maintained to enable the parents to be able to co-parent their children when they have completed the divorce process. One of the benefits of collaboration is being able to keep the children at the forefront of all discussions in the hope that the impact of the divorce on the children can be minimised.

There is still the obligation on the both parties to provide full disclosure of their financial positions to enable the parties to be fully informed before making any decisions. However, the process of providing this information is more informal and less restrictive.

Ultimately, the collaborative divorce process hopefully ends with an agreement being reached between the parties which they have both worked towards together rather than a decision being imposed upon them.

New cycling proficiency area for Sudbury youngsters Sudbury’s Belle Vue Park has seen the latest improvement to its play provision, with the creation of a new cycling proficiency area opened this month by Babergh District Council.

The cycling proficiency area in Belle Vue Park, Sudbury, sees Babergh District Council take the next steps to improve play provision across the park in line with their Communities, and Leisure, Sport and Physical Activity Strategies.

This work follows the council’s £150,000 investment earlier in the year to build a new skatepark and multi-use games area, which were developed in collaboration with Sudbury Town Council, community groups and skate park users.

By redesigning the old skatepark area into a cycling proficiency zone, it has turned the space into a multi-purpose hard surface that can be used for major town and community events such as the Carnival and Party in the Park, at the same time as allowing youngsters to get active and improve their cycling skills year-round.

Cllr Derek Davis, cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, said: “The creation of this new cycling proficiency area is another exciting step for Belle Vue Park, and forms part of our ongoing investment to improve both play provision at the park, and leisure facilities across the district.

“The former skatepark space is well-used for community activities throughout the year – so by turning it into a multi-purpose hard surface for year-round use, both for major town and community events such as the Carnival and Party in the Park, and to provide youngsters with a space to practice their cycling skills, I’m sure it will be enjoyed for many years to come.

“Providing the facilities needed is really important for us, as we work towards achieving the aims set out in our Leisure, Sport and Physical Activities and Communities Strategies, to encourage our residents to get more active.”

These proposals were scrutinised on Tuesday 7 January, discussed by the Cabinet on 24 January and by the full Council on 13 February.

There are no major cuts to services proposed in the 2020-21 budget.

However, the budget does rely on the council achieving £7.2m of savings from its transformation programmes, and a further £12.3m from “mitigations and savings”.

Primary school applications 2020/21 Suffolk parents had until Wednesday 15 January 2020 to make their application to secure their child’s place at a Primary, Infant, Junior or Middle school for September 2020. Applications were made for children born between 01 September 2015 and 31 August 2016 who are due to start primary school from September 2020.

Parents and carers are also reminded to make themselves familiar with changes to Suffolk’s School Travel Policy, which came into effect September 2019.

If parents and carers do not apply by the closing date, their application may not be dealt with until after places have been offered to those who applied on time.

Future bus projects Suffolk County Council is planning to launch a pilot project in early 2020, using school buses to provide bus services for rural communities during offpeak hours. The scheme will run as a pre-book service via a series of villages from Stowmarket to Cockfield, before connecting with Sudbury services. The reverse journey will happen in the afternoon. If the pilot is successful, this system may be implemented in other parts of the county.

At a Scrutiny meeting in December, the deputy cabinet member for transport announced that the council was planning to bid for around £20 million from the Department for Transport for an electric bus pilot scheme. If the bid is successful, the council has said that it plans to launch the pilot scheme within 12-18 months in the Bury St Edmunds area.

Coffee & Cake @ St Catherine’s - Long Melford Following a break at the end of 2019, the monthly meetings of this popular group are due to restart on Thursday 6th February 2020.

This group started in 2012 as a way of using this wonderful church, to raise funds and provide social contact for residents. As the title suggests, a hot drink and homemade cake are on offer with the opportunity to socialise, all for a nominal charge of £2.50.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk January was certainly a busy first full month of this new Parliament. The Bill that turns the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal into the law of the land has now passed right through the House of Commons and, with a majority guaranteed, the UK will leave the EU on Friday 31st January. We then move into a short transition period to negotiate our long-term arrangements with our European neighbours.

Throughout the election, including at the hustings debates, I stressed my belief that if we won a working majority the realisation of being able to move the country forward would boost business confidence – in fact, we have just seen the most positive bounce in entrepreneurial optimism on record, as far as the respected Deloitte CFO survey is concerned. I also said that passing that deal would free up Government bandwidth to concentrate on our other big challenges – and we have had a Queen’s Speech setting out a range of bold proposals for infrastructure, the environment, our public services and the justice system.

For me it’s been a case of getting back into the groove of: constituency surgeries, casework and correspondence; questions in the House; and ensuring the voice of South Suffolk continues to be heard as an army of new MPs joins the throng, each with their own critical causes. Within hours of all being sworn in days after the election, at my instigation, Suffolk’s seven MPs joined forces to send a letter to the Transport Secretary reminding him of the importance of the A14 to Britain’s economy.

A major issue that kept coming up on the doorstep in December was the future of the high street. At the first Local Government questions of the session I asked Ministers to ensure that our promised review of business rates considers the unlevel playing field traditional retailers face against the newly dominant digital marketplace.

In the coming months there will be many other areas in which to make progress: our under-performing rail service; recruiting more police officers; raising school funding with a new and fairer formula; ensuring a viable future for our farmers.

At cabinet meetings this week, councillors at Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils gave the go ahead to support Citizens Advice (CA) with more than £420k.

Recognising the value of Citizens Advice which is estimated to have saved £8.1m across Suffolk, and with growing numbers turning to them for help both councils have agreed a more sustainable funding approach with two three-year funding agreements.

Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet has granted Mid Suffolk Citizens Advice a minimum of £260,100, £86,700 a year, over a three year period starting in 2020/2021.

In Babergh, funds of at least £160,500 for Sudbury and District Citizens Advice were also given the green light over the same three-year period, equating to £53,500 per annum.

Smaller levels of funding for the Suffolk West, Diss and Ipswich CAs will continue to be agreed annually, with the individual CAs needing to apply for the money on a yearly basis.

Cllr Julie Flatman, cabinet member for housing and communities for Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “Mid Suffolk Citizens Advice are a really important partner for us, often providing a lifeline to members of our community in genuine need of help – including offering advice on debt management and arrears.

“We recognise their value in ensuring our district has a bright and healthy future, and hope this three-year agreement provides a more sustainable funding approach, in line with the aims in our Communities Strategy.”

Cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, Cllr Derek Davis, said: “Our colleagues at Citizens Advice do amazing work to support Babergh’s residents when they perhaps need it most, offering expert advice and guidance on money matters and much more.

“We hope that with this longer-term funding, they can continue to deliver a much-needed service, helping our communities to thrive and be more self-sufficient, whilst also playing a key role in achieving the aims in our Communities Strategy.”

Exact amounts of funding will be confirmed in the early part of 2020, alongside funding to other voluntary sector providers, as part of the councils’ grants programme.

The councils will also work with the Suffolk Cross Authority Citizens Advice Task and Finish Group - made up of councillors from Ipswich, Babergh, Mid Suffolk and West Suffolk councils with input from Suffolk County Council – which aims to provide a more consistent scrutiny approach to CA services across Suffolk.

February’s Advice Column I’ve seen a new property advertised which I’d like to rent and am thinking about putting a holding deposit down.

However, the rent is really cheap - should I be worried it’s a scam?

You’re right to be cautious if the rent is a lot cheaper than the market rate. Don’t be hurried into paying a deposit before you view the property and look at your tenancy agreement.

Viewing the property is important - not least so that you can see if it’s as advertised. If the landlord refuses, or is evasive, take this as a possible warning sign they are not legitimate. Even if you have seen the property, it’s still important to check your tenancy agreement carefully.

You should expect your tenancy agreement to give the name and address of the landlord, along with their contact details. Ask for this information to be added if it’s not already included.

If no contract is provided, or information on your landlord is missing, this is another red flag that the letting could be a scam.

Finally, it’s a good idea to see if the landlord is a member of a professional landlord association or is accredited by the local council. Membership isn’t compulsory, but it will mean they are legitimate and will operate to a minimum standard.

Trust your instincts and if in any doubt, don’t part with your money.

As I write this we are two-thirds through January with more economic uncertainty looming on the horizon for most of us. It’s at these times that we see support for the Arts (or anything considered more ‘cultural’ than ‘essential’) lose favour, and finance.

There are many people however, who do laud the importance of expression and social cohesion that the Arts bring to our lives both personally and as a whole. For our small town, such places as The Quay, Gainsborough House and St Peter’s (along with our educational systems) must remain as facilitators for this expression and do what we can to encourage creativity in the lives of our local inhabitants as well as those further afield. Consider this quote from Corita Kent: ‘Creativity belongs to the artist in each of us. To create means to relate. The root meaning of the word art is “to fit together” and we all do this every day. Not all of us are painters but we are all artists. Each time we fit things together we are creating – whether it is to make a loaf of bread, a child, a day.’ This may seem slightly sentimental to some but there is a truth in it which allows that we learn and grow from sharing our perceptions and creativity with others.

At The Quay we try to encourage such things, not just in entertaining ways but also with inclusion for all interests, ages and abilities. January has seen the beginning of our yearly youth drama groups and of the Phoenix Collective, who, along with Leading Lives offers direction and social interaction within the community for vulnerable adults with differing learning and physical abilities. We have the joyous Rock Choir on a Wednesday who come together to sing and socialise and our annual Local History talks which are both educational and social. There are many other activities which take place here aside from the evening entertainment and we will always need the support of our community to continue with this. I hope you all agree that this is not only worthwhile but ‘essential’ to the wellbeing of our citizens. (Oh and we’ve also booked Kiki Dee and Toyah Wilcox shows for later in the year - really should mention that!).

Just Talk The Just Talk charity was formed in 2016 in Sudbury, Suffolk. Unfortunately, the charity was dispersed in March 2019 because the local council was offered full rental for the building the charity resided in. A few months later a new dynamic initiative was born from the dispersing of the Just Talk charity by Glenda D. Roberts - an accredited psychotherapist and media spokesperson for the BACP (British association for counselling and psychotherapy) along with her team of trained counsellors organisation: the idea of an affordable service with a Bridge Fund. Our main aim is to eradicate the stigmas that surround mental health and with that ideas, the continuation of work carried out within the charity evolved of a service that is much needed in the aiding of emotional well-being. One that provides the whole community with a counselling service where everyone who seeks its service will be able to access no matter who they are or what they earn.

Emotional well-being impacts on your quality of life immensely, even affecting your performance in workplace. Glenda and her team who are an already well-established team of qualiďŹ ed therapists all share the same common belief that everyone has the right to feel heard, listened to and have someone they can trust and conďŹ de in. With this belief came the idea of JustTalk2019 affordable counselling which would be provided through Glenda’s established business ExploringU Counselling, giving people who would not otherwise be given the opportunity of an accessible therapy service. The Bridge fund idea shortly followed, an idea which would enable free counselling for those who are not in a position to pay anything at all for their therapy which would be topped up by local business sponsors whom are then kept up to date through data base and progress reports once a month.

Glenda’s initiative to develop the ďŹ rst ever counselling cafĂŠ was then brought to life in collaboration with Real Talk and the Midi Music Company (a charity based in Deptford, South East London) in their anti-knife crime campaign and shortly after, leading to the idea of producing a series of mental health awareness ďŹ lms in order to help individuals gain more knowledge about issues that are normally not spoken about. With that idea in mind, the ďŹ rst ďŹ lm in the series – ‘Dying to be Famous’ was produced by Glenda D. Roberts.

Our main audience for this ďŹ lm is young adults and teenagers. The ďŹ lm shows the effects of social media on the well-being of young people and engages with them to raise their awareness about the dangers and negative impacts that social media trolling can have. In order for the ďŹ lm to demonstrate its best effects, we are aiming to show this ďŹ lm to schools, colleges and universities in order to help young adults and teenagers.

The ďŹ lm had its ďŹ rst screening on the 16th of November 2019 in London for celebrities and inuencers which turned out to be a huge success. Since Sudbury, Suffolk is where JustTalk2019 – our affordable counselling service was born, we are collaborating with the Quay Theatre here so that our local community can watch the ďŹ lm and gain some important information about the effects that social media has on young people. For the morning showings which are at 11.30 and 14.00 on the 6th and the 10th February 2020, schools and colleges will be welcomed to book in with us via our email, mailto:info@ justtalk2019.com. A FREE well-being tool as featured in the ďŹ lm where Ruby Piper (our main character) uses it whilst debating whether to phone JustTalk2019 about getting therapy was invented to help make people become aware of selfcare. The tool explains four important categories consisting of mindset, sleep, nutrition and exercise and suggests ways that would help people to achieve their best qualities. These will be provided free of charge when you come for the screenings of the movie. They are also provided at the JustTalk2019 Centre, 54 Station Road, Sudbury, CO10 2SP. Recently, it has also been made available via our website (justtalk2019.com ). You can also grab a limited edition poster for ÂŁ1.00. Money raised go to support those who cannot afford to pay for therapy.

Since we strongly believe that everyone needs some time off and have someone to talk to about all of their concerns and problems, we are working hard to provide people with the appropriate support, we are striving to make counselling available and accessible for everyone. Therefore, for coming to the ďŹ lm, not only will you gain more awareness about social media, you are also contributing to its future ventures.
