Hadleigh Bowling Club Official Opening delayed Christmas Draw evening in January ably supported by his wife Barbara; he died 6 days later. As a tribute to Brian’s enthusiasm and courage Audrey announced that we would name our bar “ Brian Bourner’s Bar”. Our new, much larger, facility means that we are able to offer “Short Mat Bowling” in Councilor Brian Lazenby, Audrey Nelson, addition to “Carpet Bowls” Mark Wincer, John and Coral Harding, during the close season. In Ken Linge and Fred Creed addition we have a new 8 rink bowling green that will be available to us in the summer. We would welcome new members or past members back for that matter and anyone interested should contact our Secretary Fred Creed on 01473 822482.

Sunday 13 February saw the official opening of Hadleigh Bowling Club’s new Stone Street club house. In her speech the Lady Chairman, Audrey Nelson, welcomed some 100 playing and associate members. She thanked all the club members who had contributed, with their hard work to make our new facility possible. Our Lady Chairman particularly thanked Ken Linge our erstwhile Chairman and the man charged with overseeing the move, along with Club Secretary Fred Creed who have both steered the club through the traumas of upping sticks after 256 years at our old site. Both Audrey and later Ken expressed the debt of gratitude the club owed to John Harding (The Developer) who pressed on with the project through some very difficult economic times. Further they acknowledged the support of local councilors namely David Grutchfield, Brian Lazenby, Len Johnson and Richard Whiting during the planning application stages. Other guests of honour included Mark Wincer (The Architect), our new neighbour Robert Baker (Supreme Pet foods) and John Walker (Bowling Club Trustee). The occasion was saddened by the recent loss of our barman Brian Bourner to cancer. Brian had done so much to fit out the new bar and it was fitting that he was able to perform his duties for our

Head lice infestation is a problem that affects between 10-20% of Britain’s 4 million primary school children at any one time. Frustration and confusion are words that spring to the mind of many parents when dealing with the problem. Research indicates that most health care professionals think that head lice are more prevalent than ever before, partly due the increasing resistance of head lice to traditional pesticidal treatments and partly due to parents not checking for head lice regularly enough or using the treatments incorrectly. If you are worried or embarrassed about this problem come and talk to our pharmacist in total confidence in our totally private consultation room. Meanwhile, read on for 10 golden rules that parents should follow to treat head lice. 1. Check a child’s hair systematically, carefully and regularly for head lice. Treating promptly will ensure numbers do not build up. 2. If you find live lice consult a pharmacist for advice. 3. Check the hair for lice using a specially designed comb. 4. Only use a treatment if you find live lice. 5. Ask close family and friends to check themselves for lice if you discover them on your child, only treating if live lice are found. 6. Use a clinically proven, non-pesticide treatment with a physical mode of action such as DIMETHICONE, which lice can’t build up a resistance to. 7. Leave the head lice treatment on for the recommended time. 8. Use a fine toothcomb a day after applying the treatment to check no head lice are present. 9. Always apply the treatment for a second time seven days after the first application to kill any lice that may hatch from eggs during that time. 10. Check that all head lice have gone within two to three days after the final application of head lice treatment. You may need more than two applications of treatment if head lice have spread to a high level. Remember to speak to a pharmacist before treating a child with eczema or asthma or a pregnant woman. South Africa and Barbados for young Reece Sixteen year old, Reece Topley, will be soon jetting off to Barbados with the Essex 1st XI Cricket squad after just returning from South Africa, where he has been representing the England Development Programme U17 Cricket Team. Reece, who stands at 6ft 7in tall, is currently studying his ‘AS’ levels at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, and is a former pupil of Hadleigh St Mary’s Primary School. The Polstead Heath teenager who played for Hadleigh Cricket Club as a twelve year old is looking forward to playing alongside ‘Ashes batting hero’, Alistair Cook, and other England internationals, Ravi Bopara, Graham Napier and James Foster, as Essex prepare for the 2011 cricket season in the West Indies.

Hadleigh Craft & Food Fair 10th April 2011 Hadleigh is a small market town about eight miles from Ipswich and every year it is the place to come to see lots of locally made goodies at its Easter Craft & Food Fair, which this year will be held on the 10th April 2011. The location as always is the Town Hall Complex in the Market Place just off the High Street in Hadleigh, which is next to St Mary's Church. The Craft Fair starts upstairs (disabled access via lift) in the Grand Hall, with about thirty crafter's selling anything from wooden toys, home made cards, jewellery, glass wear, knitwear and lots, lots more. At the end of the room you then go up another flight of stairs to the Old Town Hall which has about another fifteen craft stalls. Then make your way to the end of that hall down a flight of stairs to our Food Hall where you can find locally made preserves, cakes, sweets, spicy foods plus lots more. If after you have finished having a look around or maybe you fancy a drink before hand you can pop to the Dining Room on the lower floor to enjoy some refreshments. The Craft fair runs from 10am - 4pm and costs £1 to come and have a look around with a 50p charge for wheelchair users as there is limited disabled access due to the buildings historic nature. All money raised goes towards future events put on by the Hadleigh Town Forums Entertainments Committee. For more details of this event or if you would like to take part please visit www.hadleighents.webs.com, or call me on 01473 828097 for a booking form. Trev Clarke

Nic Keeble from Hadleigh has wowed the judging panel of the UK’s biggest original music competition and sailed through the audition stage of Live and Unsigned. Nic will be competing against the most talented bands and artists in the country at the Regional Final showcase of Live and Unsigned 2011 – all in a bid to be signed! Nic battled against hundreds of auditionees to secure a spot in the live shows and now has the opportunity to prove that they are the best in the region. Acts that made it through auditions will now take part in a live Regional Final Showcase in front of thousands of spectators and a professional judging panel, including judges from Kerrang, NME Radio and Radio One. The best auditionees from their Regional Final Showcase also get the opportunity to play support slots with a selection of major headlining acts. Nic is no stranger to the process as last year along with his fellow band members in Steel Pictures beat thousands of competitors to get to through to the semi finals of the Competition in Basildon. Nic, a student at Suffolk New College studying Music Performance plays rhythm guitar and sings backing vocals with Steel Pictures who have gone from strength to strength over the past few years. He has also recently joined local band Hazey Mazey (folk/blues) as their bassist who play a completely different genre of music to Steel Pictures (rock). He belongs to the Suffolk Songwriters Group and has recently performed solo in Norwich through contacts he met at the Group. Live and Unsigned is the biggest original music competition in the UK for unsigned bands and artists. Attracting over 50,000 entries in the past five years, it has set itself apart from its predecessors by offering and promoting originality. Acts will be competing for main prizes which include; a management contract with Future Music, a World Tour taking in four continents including Australasia, Asia, America and Europe, an all expenses paid trip to Italy and a slot at Europe’s leading music festival courtesy of Tour Music Fest. The winning artist/band will receive an all expenses paid trip to India, play in a global face off and have the chance to win from £50,000 in prizes! Nic is now preparing for the Regional Final Showcase on Saturday 9th April at Ipswich Corn Exchange for the opportunity to progress towards the Live and Unsigned festival at the O2 in London. If you would like to support Nic please phone 07881 657686 for tickets and further details.

Hadleigh’s Footpath Volunteers, 2011 season Do you enjoy walking along our local footpaths, then why not join us, and help to keep them open and usable. We are a friendly group of people who meet every second Saturday, and, or Sunday of the month. The work we undertake includes undergrowth clearance, hedgerow maintenance, repairs to signposts, fences, and styles. We also produce maps, and guides of the area. We organize walks to locations of interest, both within the parish, and around the local area. The group works in partnership with Hadleigh Town Council, and also with Suffolk County Councils Countryside Service, through the parish paths partnership. If you would like to join us, or would like more information please telephone David Warner, (Hadleigh’s Footpath Warden), on 07749 732941 daytime, or 01473 823156 in the evenings, or at weekends. We will hold a short meeting on Tuesday 15th March at St. Marys School, Stonehouse Road, starting at 7.30pm to discuss the varies activities we will be involved in the forthcoming season. If you would like to join us you are most welcome to come along to the meeting. The first organized walk of the season will be on Saturday 26th March. PC Owners - A Warning! Over the past 2 - 4 weeks I have been called out to various people in the local area that have been phoned by a company claiming that their home computer has a virus. The claim is that Microsoft have informed them you have a virus and they have been instructed to call you and remove it. Many people have paid up to £89.99p and then allowed the company to access their machine remotely (remote access). With this remote access open on your PC you allow them into your machine free to do look at and do what ever they choose. Many people have said they have been logged on for as long as 3 hours, you only need a few minutes to gain records to your history, stored passwords and online backing etc. It really can happen that quick. After this you will then need to inform your bank and credit card companies of what has happened to prevent fraud, if its not to late already. After this has taken place the only guaranteed way to ensure your PC is free of the company is for a complete system cleanse, wipe and rebuild of the operating system - I have had to do this on every occasion. Not only are you paying for a service from them that you didn’t need but then having to pay a further charge to take away the mess that they created. If you have had this service offered to you and taken it, then please contact me or any other company that offers a similar repair service. If you receive a phone call offering you this service, please hang up on them, they are persistent but please do not be worried, just hang up! There is no way of them knowing that you have a virus on your machine. Neil Bevis, Home Computer Services 01473 829552 Mob 07815 795662, Freephone 0800 4488356

Howard in anticipation of brighter days The Letters page of this august volume has a delightful appreciation of my column from Mr David who clearly enjoys these jottings with gusto. Mr David tells us about his Henry vacuum cleaner. I too have a Henry but his performance appears somewhat more perfunctory than that of the Dyson. The picture shows me behind the wheel with my deerstalker. Not a member of staff but one of my collection of head apparel. The clocks will go forward by one hour on 27 March and I for one am looking forward to longer days and brighter weather. As you know, I am usually driven by Frank but when he is not looking, I love to pull an automobile out of the motor house. The engine throbs and I am away, like Toad of Toad Hall. I love to see other classic cars on the highway and will always flash my lights or ring my air horns in admiration. A number of you have wanted to know a little more about Frank. He is well kept and has lodgings in the Staff Wing where he lives with his wife Maria. Maria is the Cook and her dumplings are superb; pert and slightly brown on the top. Just like mother used to make. I know that they love to play canasta in their spare time with some of the others. Some of my car electronics recently required attention. I received an excellent service from Jonathan Staines Tel. 07810 356907 who is local, mobile and reasonably priced. Worth knowing when all cars are packed with computers. It concerns me that conveyancing can be performed at such low levels and yet it is a very complicated area with many pitfalls. You will all know that largely a Buyer has to insure as from exchange of contracts. Why is that – well, this means that the Buyer carries the risk and must complete his purchase whether the property is standing or a heap of rubble. I was explaining this to an elderly client recently who thought it unlikely that anything would or could happen to her detriment between exchange and completion and was contemplating retaining the risk as Seller. There were burst pipes and the house was ruined. There is nothing to beat experience and so do call us for all your property needs. I am taking to the open road . . . . . Howard Gibbons

In 1967 the family moved across the river Brett to Benton Street where Cliff was MD at Wilsons and then Pneumac (Hadleigh) Ltd. Cliff died in 2004. Beryl joined most clubs in Hadleigh at some point and was latterly a member of the WI, Flower and Fidelis clubs and enjoyed the outings with them and the U3A. Always ready to help her many friends she rarely had a bad word to say about anybody. Some will remember her in the 1960’s collecting to help build the swimming pool, 6d a week from many households for several years; she also collected for Cancer Research. Beryl leaves three sons Michael, Robert and Richard, their wives and five grandchildren. Beryl’s Sons

Can’t take it with you BBC TV’s series has certainly woken up everyone to the need to make a will – pointing out that nearly 70% of us die without making one. Where the programme missed out – probably the fault of aiming for too much dramatic effect – was that it wasn’t real life, at least it wasn’t in Suffolk. People here don’t generally have access to expensive solicitors with chambers across the street from the London Law Courts, working on multi-million pound estates and charging hundreds of pounds an hour in fees. After living here for most of my life I know that local family businesses tend to be much more organized than those portrayed in the programme; they typically arrange their management succession to the next generation without the histrionics and guns at dawn approach typified in Can’t take it with you. In reality, there is more to will writing than sitting round the dinner table debating who gets what. Usually there are also more down to earth problems to be resolved with the help of your will writer. These can include: • Lady clients who have outlived their husbands and want to leave matters tidily when they depart. They may also worry about being able to cope, and wish to make a lasting power of attorney to ensure that their banking and bills are dealt with by a relative. • Couples with young children anxious to nominate and provide for guardianship in the event of both of them dying together. • Older couples concerned to protect their home from being sold should one of them enter a care home. • Unmarried partners with children needing to avoid the unfairness of the intestacy rules and establish a right to stay in the family home if the home owner dies prematurely. Can’t take it with you was entertaining and thought provoking, but what was the most important message in the series? The answer is simple don’t keep putting it off, make your will now. Long server retires from Cookson and Zinn Ltd At the end of January and after forty six years of service Charlie Ralph retired. Charlie has been a key figure in the history of Cookson and Zinn and will be missed. Charlie always had the companies best interests at heart and showed a real commitment throughout his service. As a tight controller of costs in the past and a keen interest in real country music Charlie earned the nickname ‘Slim Budget’ (not sure if he knew that). He could write a good book in his retirement based on some of the characters he has come across over the years. Through thick and thin Charlie would always be there if needed and had a knack (with his one good eye) for spotting things that would otherwise be missed. We wish him well in his retirement and hope that he can pursue his other careers (singer, Quiz master and involvement in the Eastern Moto Cross scene) with as much dedication as he has shown to Cookson and Zinn. Charlie hung on for a couple of years just so that he could win the longest server title from Antony (Tich) Leeks, another recent retired long server. Jerry Seaman

Local Shoot raises money for Hadleigh Charity The beaters and guns of the Bower House Shoot recently presented a cheque for £500 to The Brendan Oakes Trust as a result of fundraising during the shooting season. At each shoot a sweepstake was held to guess the bag on the day and everyone was delighted to achieve such a magnificent sum of money. Mark and Valerie Oakes attended on the last day of the season to receive the cheque for the charitable trust they run in their son Brendan’s name. The trust was set up at the request of their son, he spoke before his Peter McGill presents a cheque for £500 to Mark Oakes death of helping other teenagers in a similar situation to himself experience adventurous and exciting activities. Brendan battled with cancer for 3 years, and during that time he was able to take part in and enjoy many different and varied activities which enriched his short experience of life. For example, he enjoyed quad biking and also experienced a few very fast laps around the Lotus test track. Since the trust was set up they have helped bring smiles to many teenagers’ faces from the Hadleigh/Ipswich area. The trust has in the past sent girls for make-overs and photo shoots to give their families ever lasting memories, boys to the Lotus Sport factory to see how cars are built and to experience a number of laps around the test track. They have the ability to send children up on glider flights and to spend a day in the company of expert falconers with Peregrine falcons. They have arranged for one teenager to go down to London to see a West End Show, chauffeur driven from door to door, and some Oxford Street shopping in the afternoon. The Trust always try to arrange events that are of interest to the individual. The Trust has also supplied computers, Wii and Playstation consoles, games and educational supplies to the children’s wards of the Ipswich NHS Trust Hospital, to make life a little more bearable for those undergoing treatment. If you would like to know more about the trust you can contact them directly on their website www.brendanoakestrust.co.uk

Thankyou We would like to thank Alan Keeble, Kelvin Avis and all the guns and beaters of the Bower House Shoot who very kindly raised money for the Brendan Oakes Trust. Your efforts will help to support local teenagers undergoing treatment for cancer to experience and enjoy fun and challenging activities. Mark and Valerie Oakes

Beaumont School report March 2011 With the half term break fast approaching, now is a good time to reflect on what has been a very productive and successful half term at Beaumont School. At times we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from other schools in the local area, this half term has been no exception. Recently the whole school were lucky enough to be invited to St. Mary’s Primary School for a curriculum day focussing on Maths. The day consisted of the children participating in a mixture of fun, practical Maths activities as well as watching an entertaining mathematical theatre production. The whole day was a huge success, with the children enjoying mixing and learning with their peers from another school. We are very grateful to St. Mary’s for the invitation and hope to return the invite in the near future. A few weeks ago Whatfield and Kersey Primary schools joined us here at Beaumont for the annual country dancing festival. All the schools performed admirably in front of a large audience of parents (some of whom were eager to join in). Our thanks go to Mr. Wildes who helped run the festival and assisted the schools in practicing the dances. On a sporting note, 4 gymnastic teams from Beaumont proudly represented the school at a local school competition which took place at Pipers Vale gymnastics club in Ipswich. The teams had to perform a difficult floor routine as well as demonstrating their skills on the vault. All teams did extremely well, performing brilliantly under pressure. The teams succeeded in taking two 3rd places and a well deserved 2nd place, with the Key Stage 1 teams both qualifying for the county finals. We are lucky in Hadleigh to have such a historically rich town at our disposal. This term the Pandas and Rhinos classes are studying ‘Hadleigh Through the Ages’. As part of this topic, as well as supporting the childrens’ mathematical skills, these classes took part in a Hadleigh treasure hunt. After meeting at the Guildhall the children were given a very knowledgeable historic talk by Jan Byrns and Sue Angland to set the scene for the treasure hunt. The children then explored Hadleigh looking for historical clues to eventually work out the secret combination to open the treasure chest. The day was a great success and our thanks go to Jan Byrns and Sue Angland who helped organise the treasure hunt and gave guided tours of the Guildhall on the day. Also we must thank the parents who helped during the day, as without their continued support events like this could not take place. Beaumont children exploring historic Hadleigh

A Colour for all Seasons The fashion legend Coco Chanel once said “The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good, on you!" Finding that colour was the focus of a talk by image and fashion LizWilson, consultant, when she recently spoke to the ladies of Fidelis. As Chairwoman of the same group, Liz has had ample time to observe her audience with her ‘colour’ eye. It came as no surprise then, that her selected models were a perfect LizWilson with model Jill Howlett example of one of the four distinguishing seasonal shades: Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter. By draping swatches of exquisite colour round the model’s neckline it soon became clear which shades enhanced and which detracted from their appearance and to which season they belonged. Liz elaborated on the value of knowing your own colour palette from assisting in your choice of clothes, improving your overall appearance and self confidence to creating the appropriate impression. There was a great deal of enthusiasm for the concept especially when members were asked to choose between hot and cold colours and try and guess their figure shapes too. Judging by the record turn-out it is a subject of close to everyone’s heart and one which promises to influence the overall appearance of future Fidelis’ gatherings. Jerry’s Diary There was a good response to my request for Waxwing sightings, R. Kilshaw had seen 30+ feeding on Cotoneaster shrubs at the top of Polstead Hill on 3rd Feb. Matt Garnham had 32 in his back garden on Christmas Day, he also reported sighting small flocks of white fronted geese flying over Elmsett on 24th December. 100+ Waxwings Shoveller on ice, drawn at Giffords, around 2004 were reported to have been seen on Russet Apples at the top of Aldham Road beside Beaumont School in December, although I only saw 11 birds there in many visits. 9 were seen in Threadneedle Street again on Cotoneaster shrubs on 9th January. Cormorants - the group of 8 Mr. Garnett had seen on the chestnut tree beside Layham Mill is not a record, there were 19 perched on a dead Alder Tree on 23rd December seen by a couple out walking along Benton End, I had seen 16 on the same tree on 21st December. We have seen 24 Cormorants at Giffords Park on a few visits in the past. The 19 seen on the 23rd December at Benton End must be a record along that part of the River Brett. The cold weather in December caused Bitterns to move around, a Bittern was seen in the Higham Area and also one at Ash Street. Bitterns can perch high up in trees, so can go unnoticed. A few years ago a Bittern was found high up in a tree in Holywells Park, Ipswich. I would like to point out that Giffords Park flood is part of the lower Brett Valley and is on private land, the area is in an Environmentally Sensitive Area agreement, grazed with cattle. Please get in touch if you sight anything of interest, I can be contacted by email: jerry@keithavis.co.uk Jerry Oxford

Hadleigh Healing Society Cuts and yet more cuts. That is all you hear these days. You have to wonder if there is anything going to be left for us to enjoy and help us in our every day lives. We, at the Hadleigh Healing Society are not making cuts nor cutting back on our services. We offer a friendly welcome and confidentiality to eveyone who steps over our threshold. Our healers our ordinary people, with normal lives and the usual problems that everyone experiences in today’s environment. All they want to do is help, listen, and see you go away feeling brighter. The Jolly Meat Company where food miles matter! At the Jolly Meat Company we are dedicated to providing the highest quality local meat at a reasonable price to the residents of Hadleigh and the surrounding area. We strive to keep food miles as low as possible by using local abbattoirs as well as local meat. We are now providing The winter quarters at Bower House Red Poll beef from Bower House at Polstead, lamb from Capel St. Mary and very soon Sam’s own Gloucester Old Spot pork also from Polstead. The Bower House Red Polls enjoy a relaxed and natural up-bringing following a traditional farming method. At maturity the animals are taken to the small private abbattoir at Ruse & Son in Long Melford, only seven miles from the farm, where they are handled with respect and compassion. The meat is collected and then hung properly by The Jolly Meat Company to enhance its delicious flavour and tender texture, the beef being lightly marbled giving it a ‘melt in the mouth’ quality. However we don’t want to stop there! we are very keen to support all producers of local products, thus we are calling on all of you who produce, create and make, on whatever scale, to help stock our shop with the best that this part of Suffolk has to offer. So if you think you have something that people will want to buy then please contact Sam or Charlie on 01473 810119. As keen art lovers we are also planning on providing display space for local artists. We propose to hang, talk about and hopefully sell any artwork. We will not charge anything for this service so if you are good or just a very enthusiastic artist please get in touch to discuss your requirements. We are very keen to help as we feel the town is missing an opportunity to showcase home grown talent. We shall also be installing a ‘Community’ space for local advertising and messaging. Again this will be a free facility for everybody, please call in and see us as we are keen to return the kindness shown to us since we have been open. Finally we would like to dispel the myth that shopping at your local butcher is expensive. Not at the Jolly Meat Company! If you are looking to stretch your pound a little further - we can help! We always have offers available - such as 6 chicken breasts for £9.99 - and can provide delicious cuts of meat that maybe you have not considered before. For example, Neck of Lamb, which is cooked just like an ox-tail and costs only £4.40kg. This is an example of the sort of rate only your local butcher can provide. So whatever your budget come to the Jolly Meat Company and we will look after you. Dont forget that on a saturday you don’t even need to spend any money - as long as your jokes are funny! The visit started with an excellent presentation of the history and development of the business which is now part of PepsiCola. Juices are produced on a massive scale but there is still the sense of a family business whilst British apples are used as much as possible. The whole production process is very eco friendly. On the tour members were impressed by the scale of the production line which provides a seamless process from creating the bottles from kit form through sterilising, filling, capping, labelling and packing running 24 hours a day. The sight of continuous lines of thousands of bottles was mind blowing. Afterwards everyone enjoyed an excellent meal at the Stoke by Nayland Club. SPEAKERS: 1 John Parry Williams spoke about his work in child protection. He gained experience with Voluntary Service Overseas in Tanzania during 1960's followed by teching duties in Uganda. Returning to this country he worked with the Probation Service for some time before moving to Save The Chidren. Latterly he has been involved with the UN Convention for the protection of children operating at Government level in Southern Africa. He specialised in promoting children's rights with the aim of greatly reducing the incidence of child neglect, labour and abuse. With the high level of poverty, disease including HIV in every country many children lose parents and are either looked after by grandparents with little means of support or institutionalised. The Childrens Homes are often large and badly run so that he favours fostering with local families or small group homes but not international fostering. He believes that conditions will improve albeit very slowly but more western support will be required. 2 Peter Castle,Club member, regaled members with amusing stories and anecdotes from his life as a young man in the 1930's and 1940's. 3 Hugh Smith from Hawker Restorations in Milden gave a brief biographical report and went on to describe the restoration business. He trained as an electrician at RAF Martlesham and remained in RAF until 1974 working at many different stations including 3 years at Wattisham. As a civilian he worked on the Concorde test programme and at Stansted whilst also volunteering for maintenance work at Duxford. In the early 1990’s he moved to a company in Braintree which was restoring Spitfires and in his 5 years there he rewired 20% of the planes flying then. Meanwhile Tony Ditheridge had started Hawker Restorations and he recruited Hugh who has remained there ever since. Five Hurricanes have been completed and 3 more are work in progess at present. He has rewired 50% of the Hurricanes now flying. There are only 6 craftsmen working on the machines and it takes 36000 man hours to complete each plane. Hugh scours the country for original parts but these are very scarce and therefore a small group of specialist firms have developed to produce replica systems. Although Hugh does not usually work on them the company also produces replicas classic racing cars such as Jaguar and Frazer Nash. 4 Michael Woods described the history of writing with the aid of a powerpoint presentation. He explained that primitive man had no real language but began making pictures as evidenced by many cave drawings found around the world. As man became more domesticated he needed to keep a tally of livestock etc and started to scratch marks on animal bones. This developed into picture writing then to cunieform system of symbols set out on clay tablets. The Egyptians produced papyrus and reed pens as well as developing the first written records. The Greeks came next inventing an alphabet which was further improved by the Romans who also developed Parchment some 2000 years ago. Quill pens soon replaced reed and together with parchment remained the preferred writing materials until 19th century - parchment is used to this day for Parliamentary records. Quill making was a major industry ,very skilled and labour intensive with 9 million geese used per annum to provide quills. During the Industrial Revolution steel pens were developed and Birmingham became the world centre of production. Mike showed slides of his quill and fountain pen collections including Watermans first fountain pen notorious for leaking apparently. MEMBERSHIP: New Member Michael Green was given a warm welcome into the Club whilst members also said goodbye to President Brian Havis who is moving to Leeds to be near his family. We wish him well in his new surroundings and hope that he will continue to enjoy Rotary at a Club near his new home. Hadleigh Town Council Hadleigh Swimming Pool was built using funds raised from the running of a lottery by the residents of Hadleigh and its surrounding district and with money from various grants. The pool was owned and managed by a charitable trust. It soon became obvious that the pool could not be selfsupporting and, finally, Babergh District Council took over the ownership and responsibility for the pool, using private leisure companies to manage both Hadleigh Pool and the Sudbury Leisure Complex. In 2000 Babergh District Council started a working party to discuss the Hadleigh Pool. At that time the District Council appeared to be of the understanding that the pool tank was in imminent danger of failing. There followed a number of years of meetings to discuss the possible closure of the Hadleigh Pool, plus a feasibility study was commissioned to produce a new pool. Through these discussions it became obvious that Hadleigh Town Council would be expected to make a financial contribution towards a new pool, although it was equally obvious that the Town Council did not have the money to make any reasonable contribution. It was at this stage that Hadleigh Town Council, with residents’ permission, decided to put aside money from the Council Tax for the purpose of supporting the building of a new pool. It soon became obvious that it would not be possible for Babergh District Council to finance the millions of pounds that they had identified as the cost of a new pool. A new development took place with the formation of the South Suffolk Leisure, a charitable trust to manage both the Hadleigh Pool and the Kingfisher Complex in Sudbury. Stand alone swimming pools unfortunately do not make enough money to support themselves; however, where they also have a Fitness Centre, it is the income from this facility that supports the swimming pool, as happens at Kingfisher. Babergh District Council has recently shown its commitment to the Hadleigh Pool with the redevelopment of the changing rooms and their intent to build a new Community Facility adjacent to the pool to include a fitness centre. The contract for the management of the new facility has been placed with South Suffolk Leisure and if the new centre is ultimately as successful as the Kingfisher Complex we should be hopeful of seeing further improvements to the pool tank and hall interior.

Hadleigh Town Council In 2005 Hadleigh Town Council started the Swimming Pool Fund into which it pays £29,000 per year, the equivalent of 20p per Band D property per year. This money has been ring-fenced for the specific purpose of investing in a new swimming pool in Hadleigh in the future. At March 2011 the ring-fenced fund holds approximately £190,000. As you are already aware Hadleigh Swimming Pool has recently undergone a significant amount of refurbishment. Hadleigh Town Council wishes to seek the views of the electorate on the following: Hadleigh Town Council have been requested to fund the yearly management fee of the new leisure facility over a 21 year term at a cost of £30,000 per year. It is proposed that the current contribution to the Swimming Pool Fund of £29,000 per year be used to fund this project for the benefit of the people of Hadleigh. The Swimming Pool Fund of £190,000 will remain intact and ring-fenced but may be used for major refurbishment in the future with the electorates’ agreement. Should you have any objection to this proposal please forward a letter to Mrs C A Bailey BA (Hons), Town Clerk at the Town Council Offices, The Guildhall, Hadleigh, IP7 5DN by 31 March 2011.

The sudden loss of Lindsay Panton after a short illness has left a void in many lives. Lindsay laughed, Lindsay sang, and it is with this in mind that Serendipity, one of the choirs she sang with, will present a concert in honour of their friend on Friday 11th March 2011 at 7.30pm in the United Reform Church, Market Square, Hadleigh. She loved children and was a popular teacher in schools in and around Hadleigh as well as with her many piano pupils. She had a great passion for gardening and was a considerable plantswoman who could refer to plants by their Latin names. She was an avid reader, her knowledge of history was legion and she took a particular interest in East Anglia’s heritage, loving to visit art galleries, museums and historic sites. Foremost of all was her love of family and friends, including those who will be singing in her memory. Her life was cut short, but it was lived to the full. The concert will include music she enjoyed singing and readings which remind us of her indomitable spirit. Tickets £5.00 (including refreshments and a glass of wine) available from The Idler Bookshop, or 01449 741003, 01473 658689. The event is in aid of the Alison Fracella Research Trust – a charity which was dear to Lindsay’s heart. Alison (nÊe Kettlewell) died of a rare brain tumour in 2004 at the age of 29, just a few days after her wedding.

Hadleigh Swimming Pool joins The World’s Biggest Fundraising Swim Swimmers in Hadleigh will make a splash for charity on the 9th of April as they complete the Swimathon 2011 challenge at Hadleigh Swimming Pool helping to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. Hadleigh Swimming Pool is one of over 580 pools taking part nationwide in Swimathon 2011. The world’s biggest fundraising swim is the perfect way to start the New Year on a healthy note. Swimming is proven to be a great form of exercise whatever your ability, relaxing for mind and body, and helps to build endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. TV presenter and keen swimmer Gail Porter and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew announced this week that Swimathon 2011 entries were now open. Between 8-10 April 2011 22,000 swimmers will raise more than ÂŁ2 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. Funds will help support Marie Curie Nurses who provide free nursing care to people with terminal cancer and other terminal illnesses, in the place of their choice. Matt Buggs Operations Manager for Hadleigh Swimming Pool says: “Swimathon is fantastic; it brings our communities together to raise money for charity, and provides them with a great challenge to improve their wellbeing.â€? Gail Porter said: “Launching Swimathon this year gives me huge pleasure. The challenge is ideal motivation for everyone to pull on their swimsuits, get in the pool and enjoy a much-needed New Year health boost. I find swimming a great way to keep fit, especially as it’s an activity I enjoy with my child. Going down to your local pool and getting them used to being in the water is just the start of the fun. Once my daughter was up and paddling, there was no stopping us! “What’s more - the money raised will help Marie Curie Cancer Care to provide free nursing care to terminally ill people. I know what a difference this care can make as both my mum and my grandmother died from cancer and received care at home from a Marie Curie Nurse. Caring for a loved one at the end of their life is never going to be an easy time for families but it was made much more bearable for us by the skill and care of these amazing nurses.â€? Duncan adds: “As we approach a quarter of a century of Swimathons, I’m delighted to report that last year’s event enjoyed an astonishing 38 per cent rise in swimmers, and what’s really exciting is that around 2,500 of those who dived in told us that they only started swimming again because they entered the event. From these grass roots right up to our overflowing international trophy cabinet, it seems that Britain’s love affair with swimming really is back to stay.â€? Individual and team entries to Swimathon 2011 are open until 6 April 2011. To enter go online to www.swimathon.org or call 0845 36 700 36.

Shiatsu Practitioner News from The Station Dear Readers, Welcome to this months edition of news from the Police Station. I would like to start this month with some reassurance advice. Many of you may have read in the local press, or been told about an incident that happened in January whereby a teenage female was followed back to her home address by an unknown male. This has been followed up by rumours and suggestions that there is somebody in our Town who is preying on vulnerable women, in turn developing an unprecedented level of fear amongst the public. I want to take this opportunity to set the record straight. We have not received any reports of this male being dangerous. There have been no reported cases of assaults, or other women being followed around the Town by this individual. We have identified the male, and we are currently working hard with our partner agencies to deal with the situation and the issues the male presents. The extensive knowledge we have built up on him suggests he is not a danger to women and he has not committed offences against women in the past. However, we remind the public to be vigilant, and report any suspicious behaviour to the Police from anybody that raises public concern. If anybody wishes to speak about this matter further, please contact me at the Police Station. On a different note, I had a successful meeting with the Town's mayor, representatives of the Town Council, and Paul Little from Babergh District Council on Monday 14th February. We discussed the plans for the Designated Public Place Order in depth, and looked at the ways forward for this enterprise. This was followed by a unanimous vote by the Town Council to back the scheme and we now have the amber light on the project. Hopefully by the summer the scheme will be fully in place and will allow us to make a further impact on alcohol fuelled anti social behaviour (ASB) in the Town. Of course, this is not the only power that we rely on to tackle the Town's issues and I have to say that we have come along way from the days when we were routinely dealing with violence on our streets at weekends with the minority of drunk individuals. Whilst we are currently experiencing pockets of minor ASB in various areas of the Town, we are 65 reported crimes down on this time twelve months ago. A sign that our partnership approach to problem solving is heading in the right direction, and a reminder that Hadleigh remains one of the safest small Town’s in the Country. In the past twelve months we have issued many acceptable behaviour contracts in conjunction with Babergh, as well as writing to parents of regular offenders who cause youth nuisance. Dexterity is key when dealing with those who continue to commit offences in our pubic spaces. The new yellow lines around the Town are now in force following a short delay when we were awaiting the signed traffic order. We are now paying close attention to all those locations affected by the new regulations and are issuing tickets to those who wish to flout the rules. In the last few years we have collectively issued nearly 600 parking tickets in the Town. Each ticket takes at least 5 minutes to write and issue. Every minute spent on this task could be spent on one of our current priorities, or positively engaging with our communities. We all have a responsibility to abide the law, and encourage others to do the same. I emphasise once more .... it is an offence to park on single yellow lines between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday. Think twice about abusing our parking rules. I add another reminder that our Police Station opening times changed some months ago now. Whilst emergency calls will always be responded to in a prompt fashion, the station is only open to members of the public Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 1pm and 3pm. Outside of these times it is unlikely that there will be an officer in the station given that the response police officers are based out of Ipswich, and us on the Safer Neighbourhood Team spend at least 80% of our time on patrol. We continue to seek new volunteers to assist with our work within the community, and are still looking for willing residents to join our evergrowing community speedwatch team. If you feel you can donate some time to help in any of our initiatives, or have a suitable venue that we could hijack, please contact me at the Station, or anyone else on the team at babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk Finally, our Safer Neighbourhood priority setting meetings continue to draw more members of the public along. The dates for the rest of the year are published on our website www.safersuffolk.org.uk (look up Safer Neighbourhoods). You will next find us at East Bergholt High School on Wednesday 16th March at 7.30pm and then at Pinewood Baptist Church on Wednesday 20th April at the same time. These are open public meetings for all residents across Babergh East and we encourage you to come along or get in touch if you wish to discuss any issues. End-to-End Bike Ride Lands End to John O’ Groats Target £25,000

Delightful Dual Registered Nursing and Residential Home offering care to 34 residents

The planning and training for the “End to End” bike ride to take place in June, announced by Jimmy Wilding and Dick Beechener in the January issue in support of Cancer Research, is well underway. The ‘back-up’ team is taking shape and we are now looking for all the support that we can muster to help them succeed in their aim to raise £25,000. According to recent reports cancer, in its various forms, is something that has or will affect an increasing number of us, either directly or through family and friends. For Jimmy and Dick this is the motivation that has got them in the saddle to see what they can do to assist the search for a cure. This is a major undertaking!! 900 miles on a bike for these two local ‘lads’ is not something to take on lightly and whilst they are busy putting in as much training time as they can, there is still much to organise. The route, back-up vehicle support (in case of breakdown), accommodation, sustenance are just some of the obvious practical issues to be resolved. Then there are the fund-raising arrangements that we are hoping will make their efforts so worth while. This is where we all can have apart to play. Either as individuals or as organisations your sponsorship and/or practical assistance will help turn a challenging and caring undertaking into a very rewarding achievement. We intend to provide regular updates of their progress but if you think you can help in any way or you would like more information then please contact any of the following. A Feline’s Holiday Review When the family jet off to the sun for their annual break to have some fun, this leaves me ‘home alone’ and with no-one about they need a cattery to board me out. I go to Rylenes, it’s 5 star with an orchard view, they know I will be safe and there’s lots of T.L.C. too. I pack my cushion and fleece from the house, not forgetting my nearly worn out toy mouse. This will keep me going strong until the real thing scuttles along. I am fed twice daily on a diet of biscuits, meat and fish. It’s a shame though, for a little while I will have to forego my freshly caught four legged ‘al fresco’ dish! The chalets are very spacious, have lights and heaters to keep out the chill. Come summer time, high speed fans are switched on to keep me cool and feel just ‘brill’.

There’s plenty of action throughout the day, new cats coming in and those homeward bound, being collected and taken away. The owners appear at regular times, armed with their brushes and mop to clean and check out the chalets, making sure they are always tip top. Should I get bored or feel a little forlorn, there’s a constant supply of wildlife for me to detect on the surrounding lawn; best spy times are dusk or early dawn. I enjoy my holidays at Rylenes, I can play or catnap whenever I please, looking forward to last check up & lights out, when I get an extra goodnight cuddle & squeeze. After reading this detailed little ditty, you feel Rylenes could be the place to board your own sweet kitty, then contact the owners without more a do, to check out prices and make an appointment to view. Layham Playing Field January 100 Club draw, The January draw saw the following winners: £15 Ticket No 38 Alderson £10 Ticket No 21 Dowie Website: The Playing Field management Committee is proud to announce the launch of its website – have a look at www.layhamplayingfield.talktalk.net

New Committee members

Letter from Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed by the Parish Council at their January meeting: • Reports were received from the County and District councillors concerning the wide ranging changes we can expect to see in local government in the near future. • More grafitti reported on the hard surfaces of the Playing Field referred to PCSO Gibson for investigation. • Complaints about loose dogs around the village passed on to PCSO Gibson. • Warning from PCSO Gibson concerning the increase of fuel oil thefts in country areas. • Change of one allotment tenancy has taken place. • A lottery grant has been won by the Parish Council to cover the cost of the proposed waste management site. Details of this project will be circulated with the March issue of the Hadleigh Community News and an opportunity offered to villagers to see the plans at an open session in the Village Hall. • Planning. The planned riding area at Holly Lodge House has been approved by Babergh District Council. • Planning. The application for conversion of the small granary building opposite Butterfly Hall was scrutinised. Members of the Parish Council voiced concerns over the removal of the outside staircase and the introduction of a ‘Juliet balcony’ which is thought to be out of character with building. These observations were passed on to BDC. • Contracts for the formal adoption of the two telephone boxes by the Parish have been signed. • It was confirmed that right to use the grasscrete track around Gardeners’ Close relates only to the current residents of the homes backing on to the track. As residency changes a fresh license has to be sought from the owners of the track. The next meeting of the Council will be held on Thursday 17 February.

The Management Committee needs to recruit more members and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested. We meet in committee a couple of times a year and work on the field as a group occasionally. If you would like to get involved please contact the current Chair of the group – Terri Newman on 01473 824993

Dog fouling Seven committee members spent a Sunday morning working on the field recently. We had not been there in the recent cold weather and were upset to find so much dog fouling in the conservation area. It seems that some dog owners must release their dogs to allow them to roam over the area without any thought for those who follow on. Several members of the group had to go home to scrub dog fouling off footwear. It is not appreciated!

From the Layham Archive Within living memory our village was home to a wheelwright’s business. All around what is now called The Dower House (the home of David and Nan Pratt opposite the Queen’s Head in Lower Layham) the Groves family built and repaired farm wagons and all sorts of carriages and carts. They also carried out any general carpentry jobs required by residents including the making of coffins.

SPECIAL COUNCIL NOTICE The circumstances of Louise Allen, our Clerk, have changed in recent months and she finds it impossible to continue in the post of Clerk to the Parish Council. There will shortly be a vacancy and the Chair of the Council, Jane Gales, would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in applying for the post (01473 823103).

The older of the two photographs shows (from the left) Tom Groves, Fred Keeble (an employee), Bedford Groves (the wheelwright), George Groves and his baby son Charlie. The cart on the left was the general purpose wagon for the business and would have been seen around the area making deliveries and collections. The land around the house was a hive of industry. It is just possible to see in the older photograph a second building (now demolished) which was the paint shop. Great care was taken with the painting of vehicles (always green and yellow) and this could certainly not be done anywhere near the wood shavings and sawdust! A dip can be discerned in the grassed area to the left of the house which is the site of the saw pit. In the early days all the timber was sawn from whole tree trunks with a huge double handed saw worked vertically, with one sawyer at ground level and the second, unlucky one, down in the pit! In later years, the business invested in one of the first petrol driven band saws in the area which was situated in the rear of the main workshop. It is still possible to see the part of the wall which was removed when pieces of timber longer than the width of the shed had to be fed through the saw from outside the building. In the 1940s and 50s the demand for horse drawn vehicles dried up as more and more people could afford petrol driven vehicles and James Frisby (known to everyone as Jim) continued the business on the same site making and selling such things as heavy wooden wheelbarrows and wooden ladders then moving into general carpentry and painting work until he retired about 1970. The second picture shows David Pratt in front of the building as it is today.

Layham Playgroup ‘Spring time in Layham!’ How lucky we are to have our playgroup in such a wonderful setting. The children have really enjoyed themselves taking walks down the lane from our beloved village hall, looking for the early signs of spring. Spotting Snow drops, Crocuses & Daffodils, visiting the sheep & listening to the birds have all been a joy for our inquisitive little minds. Taking photos with our new digital camera has been particularly exciting, with some particularly impressive results, Back inside we have had great fun celebrating Chinese New Year, including our stir fry snack time & Valentines Day, with some beautiful pictures & delicious decorated, homemade biscuits for our loved ones. Next term we turn our attention to ‘colours’ & further springtime thoughts including Shrove Tuesday (yummy pancakes), Red Nose Day, Mothers Day & Easter. On Friday 4th March we will be holding our ‘Big Yellow Coffee Morning’ in aid of The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation. This is a very worthy cause, so come along & join in a fun packed morning with yellow themed food & crafts. Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 21/2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact Linda on 01473 828974 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk

It’s along the Railway walk! Leaf - miners This type of insect attack on plants is very common, since there are many species that employ this method of living through their larval (caterpillar) stage. I can’t really say which species this particular one is, but it is probably a small Sawfly (one of the Hymenoptera group). The photograph was taken in early December, which doesn’t give the “grub” much time to feed-up prior to becoming a chrysalis for the winter.

How do they do it! An adult insect has “sawn” (that’s how “Sawfly” it gets its name) a small slit into the leaf of a Lesser-Burdock (Arctium minus) seedling and laid some eggs inside the leaf structure. We’ve all seen Burdocks, they have ball-shaped seed heads about 25mm (1 inch) in diameter that stick to dogs like magic during the autumn. Over time the egg hatches into a small larvae (caterpillars are good examples of this development stage), which starts to tunnel about in the soft material (Mesophyll) inside the leaf, chewing out everything it can reach. It won’t chew through the leaf’s surfaces (Epidermis) unless forced to, because that is where the plant builds-in the Cellulose, which is not easily digestible. It tunnels by moving it’s head from side to side and then moving forward into the space it has created. (Similar to the old coal miners!) If the photograph reproduces well enough you can actually see the miners at work! At the end of some of the tunnels you can just see their black heads. The white “squiggly” pattern you see behind them is the very outer layers of the leaf (epidermis and cuticle) that have dried out through lack of moisture and nutrient after all the contents have been eaten away. When the larvae has grown to a predetermined size it cuts its way through the lower surfaces and falls into the leaf litter where it becomes a chrysalis (pupates), emerging the following year as a brand new Sawfly to start the process again. There are several advantages in this reproductive strategy. Because the egg is deposited inside the leaf it is relatively safe. Predators can’t find and consume it, nor can the rain wash it off. Once hatched, the larvae are protected from the weather: the sun can’t “dry them out”, the rain can’t drown them, and of course it is completely surrounded by a supply of fresh food. It also has a hidden advantage. Because the adults frequently exploit another food source (often nectar) there is no competition between larvae and adult for a food supply. Quite clever for a small wasp-like insect! I’m not sure how these ones might have survived December’s cold spell. Some insects do have antifreeze built into their body fluids, but because I have not been able to identify the species (there are literally hundreds that use this reproductive strategy) I’m not sure whether these little fellows had what it takes or not. Too late to find out now anyway! Mick T

the beauty room Library Link Please note that the consultation process on the future of Suffolk Libraries continues until 30th April 2011. The consultation encourages community and voluntary groups, businesses, local councils and individuals across Suffolk to have their say about running their local library differently and at reduced cost to the council. As a result of reductions in the county council’s funding, the library service will need to cost Suffolk County Council at least 30% less to deliver within three years. As part of the New Strategic Direction, which is being developed to help protect services throughout the current financial climate, the county council is looking for new, innovative ways of running Suffolk’s libraries. This first phase of the consultation will focus on inviting innovative ideas for running library services differently. All ideas will be reviewed, and the next phase will involve formal invitations to express interest. Read more by visiting www.suffolk.gov.uk/librariesconsultation2011 If you would like a printed copy please visit the library. Not Fade Away... You don’t want you memories to fade away if your PC disk drive goes corrupt or develops a fault. Of course that would never be a problem because you have backups! You have backups don’t you? Most people don’t or only have a partial backup. So what then? Everyone I speak to says photographs are the things they would be most upset to lose. Important documents are next followed by music collections because of the time invested in their creation. Over the last few months I have had several computers with failing or corrupt disk drives to work on. In every case I have been able to recover 100% of the data even if the disk drive was scrap afterwards. Most of the time there is no warning that trouble is imminent but there are a couple of signs which you should be aware of: 1: If you hear a frequent clicking sound coming from the computer, this is often a sign of a failing disk. 2: Windows reports errors when reading or writing files. This is not a good sign. If you experience either of these you should back up your data if you can and seek help. Often a failing drive will only work a small number of times before giving up the ghost completely. Then things get much, much more expensive. Remember, about 9 out of 10 times your data can be recovered but if you’re the unlucky 1 in 10, how would it affect you? In the meantime for any help contact Nick Kotarski 07790 842 968 / 01206 299 568 nick@kotarski.co.uk or visit kotarski.co.uk.

The Porch Project Hey, My names Craig Hutton I have been working with the Porch Project now since October as their youth worker and I love being part of such an awesome project. We are now working with 130 young people a week and that is rising and it is such a privilege to be able to work with your awesome young people. We have grown so much in size that we have had to open on a Tuesday night as well as Friday nights and have been on BBC Suffolk talking about how well the project is going. The young people of Hadleigh awesome and all we want to do, is give them a safe space to hang out. The police have recently announced that because of the project the young people’s attitude towards police has improved and overall anti social behaviour has decreased significantly. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask or email me through craigus44@hotmail.com. Also to those parents whose young people do attend the project there was recently a permission slip sent home with them if you could ask them about this and get it back to us asap we would really appreciate that. Thanks so much Craig Hutton, Youth Worker (Porch Project)

Thank you to all who helped May I express my heartfelt thanks to all those who helped care for me, and especially those who contacted the Ambulance Service, when I collasped in Wentworth Close, Hadleigh on the evening of the 31st January 2011? I was obviously completely unaware of the individuals concerned, and with one or two exceptions, have been unable to express my gratitude personally, but once again, my sincere thanks. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 20th January 2011 Present: Mrs. J. Byrne (Town Mayor), N. Amin, D. Buchanan, T. Clarke, Miss P.F. Cook, D.G. Grutchfield, Mrs D.A. Haylock, B Lazenby, P. Matthews, Miss J. Nevard, T. Sheldrick and R. Whiting. In attendance: Asst. Chief Constable Paul Marshall, Inspector Crick, PC. Matt Paisley (Suffolk Constabulary) and Joanna Spicer (Police Authority Member). The meeting started with a power point presentation by the Suffolk Police Authority on the Public Sector Cuts – Planning for the future of Policing in Suffolk followed by a question and answer session. The Mayor thanked the members of the Suffolk Police Authority for their informative presentation. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies for absence had been received from Councillors K. Grimsey, Mrs. M. Munson and L. Munson. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillor Miss Cook and Mrs Haylock declared a personal interest in the Accounts for Payment as they knew one of the payees. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 16th December 2010 were confirmed and signed. Matters Arising Public Toilet Facility – The Town Clerk has spoken with the Clerk of Lavenham Parish Council as they have been approached to take over the public toilets in Lavenham. She has been provided with costings from the District Council stating that their toilets cost £27,000 per year. No reply to the Clerks letter has been received to date. The Clerk has investigated providing the town with a super loo but this would cost in the region of £31,000 per year. Car Parking – The Clerk had received a response from Babergh District Council advising that the income taken during the six weeks of charging for car parking in Hadleigh was approximately £1,710. The approximate cost of the scheme in Hadleigh is £12,000. The cost of the car park warden in Hadleigh has not changed as a result of the new scheme. Suffolk County Council – New Strategic Direction There is one lollipop lady in the town that is funded by Suffolk County Council. Hadleigh Community Primary School has received no notification that this service is to be removed. POLICING PC Matt Paisley presented the Police Report for December and it was noted that 22 crimes had been recorded during the month. The offences comprised as follows: 7 thefts; 6 criminal damage; 4 burglaries; 3 common assaults; 1 assault occasioning ABH and 1 causing an affray. Of these crimes 4 had been detected. This was 65 crimes down on last year for Hadleigh. 22 parking tickets had been issued. PC Paisley answered questions on the no loading area in the High Street and the Police coning off areas for delivery lorries, increased traffic flow should the Tesco Application be approved and alcohol related crimes. DESIGNATED PUBLIC PLACES ORDER (DPPO) Councillors had received details of the proposals for Hadleigh from Paul Little, Babergh District Council Officer. The Mayor advised that there was a financial implication to the scheme in the number of signs required and proposed that a meeting be arranged between the Town Clerk, herself, Chair of Finance & Personnel Committee, the Police, the Chamber of Commerce and Paul Little, Babergh District Council Officer and report back. This proposal was agreed. REPORT OF THE DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written reports had been received from Councillors Whiting and Riley. Councillor Mrs Munson had tendered her apologies and had nothing to report. There was no written report from Councillor Grutchfield. Councillor Grutchfield did report that due to the bad weather the yellow lines were still not in place. REPORT OF THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR Councillor Grutchfield reported that Suffolk County Council is cutting back on services. Twelve scrutiny panels are being reduced down to one. The Chief Executive has been in the press this week justifying her salary. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported a letter received from the Royal British Legion asking Councils to organise a Poppy Party to celebrate their 90th birthday. The Clerk was requested to ask the local branch of the British Legion if anything was being organised. The Clerk reported correspondence from a local resident complaining about the state of the cemetery on Christmas Day, along with her response. The Council had installed grit bins following last years bad weather and the Contractor’s grit as necessary and it was felt that there was nothing more that can be done. Councillor Matthews also reported that he gritted the entrance and paths himself. Councillors noted the comments. The Mayor reported that she had received a response from Babergh District Council following her Freedom of Information request when she asked what 29

savings the CAST and LAMP projects had made. From the documentation she had received it would appear that the CAST system (telephone, training staff, dealing with the public) came in under budget and appears to be providing a saving and 92% of the public feel it is a good system. The LAMP system (putting everything onto computers including planning) came in over budget and a request for an additional 71k has just been made and to date the projections for savings have dropped. STANDING ORDER NO: 24 Councillor Cook asked two questions: 1) Had the Town Clerk been given prior knowledge of Babergh District Councillor Ridley’s press release in the EADT about the new community facility? The Town Clerk had not been forewarned of this press release and would raise this matter with Mr. T. Mutum, Babergh District Council Officer at their next meeting. 2) Could the Town Council produce press releases especially as some council’s had been publicising their precept figures and Hadleigh Town Council would not be raising theirs – she felt this should be in the local press? Councillor Matthews asked the Clerk to look at the District Council’s documents which had been discussed by the Town Forum and discuss with Councillor Matthews the possibility of these being Agenda items at a future meeting? ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £18,859.79 be approved for payment. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 16th December 2010 and 13th January 2011 were noted. SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL – NEW STRATEGIC DIRECTION The Clerk was asked to write a letter to Suffolk County Council regarding the loss of library services around the County. Councillor Miss Cook reported that Senior Citizens Bus Pass from the end of March will only provide the statutory minimum entitlement. Free access to Park & Ride will cease and they can only be used after 9.30am. SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL – SUFFOLK TRADING STANDARDS It was reported that Suffolk County Council Trading Standards are proposing to cease the proactive checks to detect overloaded goods vehicles and vehicles that breach weight restrictions on roads and bridges. This is not a statutory duty but is of importance to certain areas and for that reason they will continue to assist in securing compliance to the legislation where it is identified through the HGV Incident Reporting System or through the Lorry Watch scheme due to launched shortly. The Clerk was asked to write a letter of objection to Suffolk County Council on the loss of this service. BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCIL – PLANNED MERGER No further information has been received although Councillor Lazenby advised that papers were being sent out regarding the merger. He pointed out that the District Councillors have not agreed to the merger only to moving on to the next step. Final agreement must be made by members of the public. A seminar is being held shortly and the District Councillors will report back. There being no further business the meeting closed at 9pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) Addendum: Please write to Mrs. Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) Town Clerk, Hadleigh Town Council, The Guildhall Hadleigh IP7 5DN if you are part of a voluntary organisation or community group wishing to be considered for a grant including the following information: • The specific amount of the grant • What the funding is for • Breakdown of costs and any funds already raised • How the project will benefit Hadleigh and its residents. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee considered the applications for Planning Consent, details of which are listed below and upon which the following decisions were reached:B/08/00311/FUL Retail development site rear of 75-133 High Street (inc. former Brett Works), Bridge Street, Hadleigh. Erection of a Class A1 retail unit comprising 2500sqm GEA, a second Class A1/A3 retail unit of 142sqm GEA, erection of two-storey building to replace Bridge House, associated

access, servicing, landscaping, relocation of part of the Bridge Street car park and allotments and limited removal of trees and hedgerow, as amended by additional information received 02/06/2008, revised plans/additional information received n 08/01/2010 and 20/01/2010 and additional information submitted on 03/12/201. The Chair stated that the retail assessment is materially no different from the one produced in 2008. Given this the Clerk was requested to forward a copy of the previous comments for this application to Babergh District Council along with the following comments: The Town Council feels this scheme is contrary to national policy as set out in PPS1, PPS4, PPG13 and PPS5 and contrary to development plan policies ENV6, E6, T14 of the East of England Plan 2008 and SP04, CN01, CN03 and CN08 of the Babergh Local Plan alterations number 2. The Town Council also believes that the scheme would result in significant harm to the local economy. The Clerk was requested to ask Babergh District Council why the Retail Impact Assessment provided is not as comprehensive as that provided by the same Company for the application of the Manningtree store. The Town Council felt that it should be provided with a similar document. B/10/01453/FUL Unit 9 & 10 Byford Court, Crockatt Road, Lady Lane Industrial Estate, Erection of 17 No. Photovoltaic Solar Panels. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) SCHEDULE OF DECISIONS OF LOCAL PLANNING AUTHORITY The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority. GRAND CHARITY DINNER with David and Griff

Hadleigh Army Cadet Force News This article is I hope now to be the first of many, therefore, is primarily an introduction to an organisation that has a long founded history within Hadleigh Town, and is probably engrained in the memories of some of you old and bold ex Hadleigh Cadets. When I took over the Detachment back in Oct 2009 I made a promise to the Cadets to modernise upgrade and stabilise the Detachment. With the help of a group of dedicated Cadets Cadet Cpl Burgess receiving his Bronze and Staff this has finally been achieved, with Duke of Edinburgh the final piece in the jigsaw being the installation of a false insulated ceiling within Award from Capt Rhind the Drill Hall itself, which hopefully goes some way to rectifying the freezing conditions within the building during the Winter Months, I am sure there are some ex Cadets out there that remember this very well. The last 12 Months have been a bit disruptive to say the least, with a massive clearout of unwanted and un-used equipment and all the internal renovation works going on it has been sometimes quite difficult to maintain Instructional and Testing standards due to Detachment closures etc. Cadet Cpl Steer receiving his Bronze Duke of That said, the achievements made by the Edinburgh Cadets over the past year are only what can be described as astronomical under the Award from Capt Rhind circumstances and stand as a Monument to the dedication and commitment of these young people. The pinnacle of this year's achievements was 2 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards to members of Hadleigh Detachment, of which both individuals have expressed a wish for their Silver and Gold awards, and we will be moving on with that over the next 12 Months. Now that the period of disruption is over we are now looking forward to a long and sustained period of training enabling Cadets to achieve to their full potential, within not just the Detachment, but Suffolk Army Cadet Force as a whole. This training not only helps to develop life skills such as Leadership, Friendship, Teamwork and Confidence but is structured around promoting a sense of Community within the Cadets themselves. We welcome Cadets from the age of 12 (must be in year 8) of all abilities and back grounds that are able to access a majority of our activities. If you are interested please view our website www.hadleighreme.co.uk or alternatively come and see us at the Drill Hall on George Street, Hadleigh where we Parade on Monday and Thursday 1930 to 2130. 10 top tips from Slimming World’s nutrition team… …for weight loss that will last a lifetime! 1. Eat smart! By basing your meals around satisfying foods such as fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, pulses, eggs, fish, poultry, and lean meat, you’re naturally reducing calories and satisfying your appetite. That means you’re less likely to reach for the biscuit tin. 2. Make small changes that will last Make gradual changes to the way you shop, cook and eat and slowly introduce activity into your everyday life – by taking the stairs instead of the lift or parking further away from the shops. Cutting out the equivalent of a biscuit each day can help lose up to a stone in a year… crumbs! 3. Don’t be too strict on yourself Research has shown that people who ban certain foods suffer cravings and are more likely to give in to temptation. Having a little of what you fancy will leave you feeling healthier and happier. 4. Break habits that make you feel guilty Keep a note of the times that you crave chocolates, crisps or a glass of wine and plan for them. If you’re a TV snacker be ready with a delicious bowl of strawberries or sugar-free jelly topped with fat-free yogurt for when your favourite programme starts. 5. Cool swaps are key So change cooking oil for light sprays, sugar for sweetener and calorie-laden salad dressings for fat-free vinaigrettes and you’ll see the pounds fly off! 6. Make low fat dairy choices By swapping full fat dairy products for low fat equivalents you’ll reduce your calorie and saturated fat intake while still ensuring you get enough calcium. 7. Get active and boost your weight loss By starting with small activity targets that build up to a regular habit you’re much more likely to stick to it. Aim to do 5 minutes every day of any activity that you like, walking, swimming, gardening, housework – anything counts – and gradually build it up until you’re doing 30 minutes, 5 days a week. 8. Alternate your alcohol! By alternating your alcoholic drinks with a glass of with water, fizzy diet drink or low calorie juice is a great way to keep a clear head, and reduce your calorie count. 9. Make a plan It’s tempting to ring for a takeout or hit the fast food when your fridge is empty so make sure your cupboards and fridge are always stocked with plenty of healthy options that you can enjoy for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and your fruit bowl’s full for an easy snack. 10. Get support Finally, having someone to chat to, share ideas with and add an element of friendly competition can really boost your commitment and motivation, so if a friend or relative wants to lose weight too, buddy up and do it together! And if you want extra support, you’ll find a group of friends waiting to welcome you at your local Slimming World group. Taoist Tai Chi internal art of taijiquan The Taoist Tai Chi™ internal art of taijiquan (Tai Chi) is a gentle set of movements that promotes health and well-being for adults of all ages and in all health conditions. It is specifically designed for improving health in the holistic sense. At the mental and spiritual level, it encourages an attitude of calm, compassion and reduced self-centredness during practice and in daily life. This aspect is cultivated in particular through the Society’s volunteer ethos. The Taoist Tai Chi Society of Great Britain is part of the International Taoist Tai Chi Society, founded in 1970 by Master Moy Lin-Shin, a Taoist monk, who devoted his life to helping people restore and maintain their health. The Society now spreads his work in more than 500 locations in 26 countries. New beginners classes start in Hadleigh on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th March (see ad), with other classes across Suffolk and into Norfolk. Walter Wright go The Extra Mile Local firm of Chartered Accountants Walter Wright are undertaking a static cycle ride from Felixstowe to Edinburgh in order to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation in memory of their Tax Manager Alain Harris who sadly died last year. Alain worked for the practice for 24 years as Head of the Tax Department and was extremely popular with both staff and clients. He is greatly missed by everyone and the Practice decided it was appropriate to cover the distance from his home town of Felixstowe to Edinburgh as he had Scottish roots. As all the staff wanted to participate and many clients have shown an interest, it was agreed we would complete the 400 plus miles on exercise bikes in the office commencing Monday 4 April 2011. The Practice is no stranger to raising funds for heart charities with a team of employees back in the 1990’s pushing a hospital bed (complete with patients) 10 miles around the streets of Suffolk raising over £1,500. In 2005 six of the female staff from Walter Wright undertook the Ladies Driving Challenge at Rendlesham Forest driving everything from HGV’s, double decker buses to quad bikes, sports cars and diggers. raising over £1,600. Both of these amounts were donated to The East Suffolk Group of the British Cardiac Patients Association to buy much needed equipment for the Cardiac Unit at Ipswich Hospital. We would like to invite anyone who would like to come and cycle a few miles in Alain’s memory or who would like to sponsor Walter Wright in their quest to raise funds for the charity to contact Anita Postle on 01473 822143 or anita@walterwright.co.uk or alternatively go to the Just Giving Page www.justgiving.com/walterwright where you can sponsor the team direct

Leadership at Hadleigh If we want pupils to maximise their success both academically and personally we need to ensure they have the opportunity to develop the self-confidence and self-belief that is generated by taking on responsibility. The positive learning relationships between pupils and staff in our school facilitate this. Feedback from our sixth form providers indicates that our pupils are more adept at coping with independent study than most and are confident and self-aware individuals. A core method of enabling pupils to develop these skills is to provide a wide range of opportunities for them to contribute to the work and life of our school and take responsibility for developing all the positive aspects of our learning community further. Last year we introduced a pupil Leadership Team which has successfully supported the work of the school in reviewing learning and teaching as well as looking at opportunities to improve the life of our pupils within school. The leadership qualities of this team have been so impressive that we have decided to develop further opportunities for pupils to lead and take responsibility at Hadleigh as we are confident that they are ready to rise to this challenge. Pupils in Year 10 will be applying for a range of roles and we intend to look at further leadership opportunities for pupils in other year groups. The appointments will commence in May this Year when our Year 11 pupils go on study leave and applicants will need to complete a letter of application and undertake a formal interview for the role.

‘Oliver’ leaves audiences wanting more! Throughout this school year, the students have been preparing for the production of ‘Oliver!’, which was performed last month. Many students have been taking part in the including: production acting, music, backstage and set design. The acting has been superb and a special thanks needs to go to all of the students performing in the play. The students all want to say a big thank you to all the teachers involved in making this production possible. It has been a wonderful experience for everyone who has been involved and the response from the audience was fantastic. We look forward to the next production, as we are sure it will be just as good. News from the Library World Book Day is on Thursday 3rd March 2011. To celebrate, the Library will be giving all lower school students a £1 World Book Day token. The Library will have a choice of specially selected £1 books, which the students can exchange for their £1 book token, or they can use their book token towards the cost of a book at all participating bookshops displaying World Book Day material. On World Book Day itself, the Library will be running a quiz, with prizes for the winning team. There will also be the chance to design a book-themed bookmark, which can be entered into a national competition, the winning design being made into a bookmark and distributed to thousand of bookshops nationwide. Maths News A number of students from Year 9 and 10 were chosen to sit the intermediate maths challenge on the 3rd of February. Also there will be a group challenge taking place at Framingham College in March and the Junior Maths Challenge will take place in April for the top set maths classes in Years 7 and 8. On March 1st it is World Maths Day and a number of the students at Hadleigh High are going to have the chance to compete against students from around the world on a variety of mental mathematics questions via the internet. This is a great fun way for the students to engage in their mental maths. Music Department On Friday 4th February, the Year 10 music students went to London to watch the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) perform Symphony No. 40 in G Minor. This is a piece which the GCSE music class are studying for their exam in Year 11. Students were also given the opportunity to attend a guitar workshop where they learnt how the chord structures of well known pop songs could be linked to the chord structures of Mozart’s symphonies. The students found it very useful and informative to hear professional musicians talk in detail about the piece and thoroughly enjoyed listening to a live orchestra play the music which they are studying.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers 2011 From the 9th February Sainsbury’s will be giving out Active Kids vouchers that we can use to buy sports equipment for the school. If you have any vouchers we would be very grateful if they could be sent in to school. Our previous best has been in the region of 13,000 vouchers and we hope we are able to beat this target and really have the best chance to increase opportunities for students at Hadleigh. Cross Country At the beginning of February, the Eastern Counties Cross Country Championship was held in Northamptonshire. As a result of their brilliant performances in the Suffolk trials Hadleigh had two students chosen to represent the County. Callum Morrin, Year 7, took part in the Minor Boys and finished 35th. Toby Rankin in the Inter Boys finished 51st. Former Hadleigh student, Kieran Clements, easily won the Senior Boys event and must be a strong contender for the National title which is coming up in March. Well done to them all. Hadleigh High Hockey Game On Tuesday the 15th of February a team of Year 10s went to Copleston for a hockey tournament. Daniel Belli , the captain, led the team which consisted of Charlie Hanley, Alex Davey, Lorna McGhee, Leah Claireaux, Patrick Miller, Spencer Reynolds, Jess Sexton, Simon Partridge and Ollie Rhodes, all of whom played extremely well. The team drew against Copleston, narrowly lost to Thomas Mills and despite the captain’s injury, Alex Davey managed to score three superb goals, winning the game and placing the team second overall! Cambridge University day On Wednesday the 9th of February, a group of Year ten students visited Cambridge University on a ‘Challenge day’. These nine students were lucky enough to visit Emmanuel collage, where they were given a talk on what University life is like. This included being told about the structure of an average university day and a tour around the other collages. In the afternoon, they were present for a linguistic lecture, which they found both interesting and enjoyable. The Town (15) £3 FRIDAY 11th MARCH at 7.30 pm This is the last film with Pete Postlethwaite before his untimely death in January of this year. It is a slick cops ‘n’ robbers saga based in Boston, from film director Ben Affleck. Pete in this film is a vicious, leather-skinned “florist” - a kingpin within the framework of this heist movie. The film’s story is about a group of childhood friends who get in the habit of robbing banks with flawless, meticulous planning. If you want breathtaking car chases, daring bank robberies, tension and suspense - possibly also a laugh, The Town is your cup of tea, keeping you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next

Made in Dagenham (15) £3 FRIDAY 25th MARCH at 7.30 pm This film stars the award winning Sally Hawkins as Rita O’Grady who is the catalyst for the 1968 Ford Dagenham strike by 187 sewing machinists which led to the advent of the Equal Pay Act. Although the film’s locations and plot are not strictly accurate, this is a true British film to lift your heart. You will find Hollywood in Hadleigh in the Ansell Centre

Peter & Julie Phillips wish to thank family and friends for all the sympathy shown to them and their sons Lee and Nick during the very sad loss of their darling daughter and sister Rebecca, the support, kindness and love shown to us has been wonderful. Our thanks to Hadleigh United Football Club, James, Mel and everyone involved with the lighting of the Chinese lanterns, it was wonderful, we could not believe how many people turned up and brought lanterns, they looked so beautiful it was something we will never forget. We have found so much comfort in reading the hundreds of cards and letters sent, many by the parents of the children Rebecca cared for at Lavender Hall Kindergarten where she worked in the baby room, it is lovely to read how parents felt assured when leaving their little ones in the loving arms of Rebecca. We have taken much strength from the support and love given by Andrea and all the lovely staff at Lavender Hall and after having a few visits to the Kindergarten we can see why Rebecca loved her job so much. We thank everyone who attended Rebecca’s funeral, we were overwhelmed how many people came out in the bitterly cold weather, out thanks also for the beautiful flowers and the donations given for the Treehouse Appeal which totaled £827.09. Our sincere thanks to Tony for organising a raffle and all our friends who took part, it was so kind and very much appreciated. Congratulations to Megan, Michaela, Ricky and all involved in the organisation of the Ladies Night in memory of Rebecca, it was a great success, our thanks to all who attended, Mr Frolish and St Mary’s CEVA Primary School for helping make this event possible, also to The Eight Bells and The Cock Inn for money raised. The sudden loss of Rebecca has been a terrible shock and we still find it difficult to accept, we would not have coped without the help of our family and friends who were there for us everyday and Rebecca’s friends and Scott her boyfriend who have given us so much support over the last few months, our love and thanks to you all. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our monthly meeting, although held on St. Valentines Day, did not feature flowers but trees for small gardens. Our speaker Matt Tatton-Brown from The Place for Plants bought along plenty of specimens about which he gave us a full run down of size expectations and suitable positions in which to plant them. His ability to reel off all the latin names was done with consumate ease whilst keeping us in stitches, in fact I think T.V. is missing a trick!! Who would have thought such a seemingly mundane topic would turn out to be so hilarious. He packed his talk with various anecdotes such as his own gaffs made in public about plants for windy back passages not to mentions his surprise encounters with naked ladies, no, not colchicums, infact not plants of any kind! Naturally of the numerous plants he brought with him a good few went home with members despite his admission that a good few of them looked more like dead sticks than viable, potential beauties which of course will come in to their own as the year progresses. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. Next month is our AGM on Monday 14th March to which everyone is welcome and hopefully the business part will quickly make way for more interesting activities. Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts I love this time of year. I never cease to wonder that the dried up seeds that I started to sow in February will by now have sent green shoots bursting through the soil, and that the bigger ones will be ready to prick out. In the garden an increasing variety of bulbs are bursting into flower. Within limits I am prepared to let plants grow where they choose. Where possible I let crocus seeds mature on the plant, and as a result now have crocuses in my lawn, and in the joints between paving slabs on a path. If one is to let the process continue it does mean avoiding them on the first 2 or 3 cuts of the lawn, but it is worth it. This months talk at the Garden Club was by Matthew Tanton Brown from The Place for Plants on "Trees for small gardens". He brought along a very good selection of suitable trees in pots. I was particularly interested in 2 lilacs, Syringia meyerii "Palibin", and Syringia microphylla "Suberba". These are much more compact than the commonly seen selections from syringia vulgaris. The talk also made me think again about magnolias. Every year I admire other peoples magnolias, but I have never grown one. At present I am thinking whether or not I could find the right spot for a Magnolia stellata "King Rose". Open Gardens 19-20 March Place for Plants Open Weekend, East Bergholt 26 March Woodwards, Coddenham 27 March Woodwards, Coddenham 27 March Langham Hall Gardens, Bury St Edmunds Weather Records In January 60 mm (2.4") of rain fell at Kersey which is just a bit above average. It made the 3 month running figure 137 mm (5.4") which is just a bit below average. However my garden still seems to be very wet and I am avoiding walking on it as much as possible. In January the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (55F), and the minimum was -1 Cel (30F). So January was quite warm with no really hard frosts, and we can start to wonder whether Spring has come early. Still there is plenty of time for some more hard weather to come. In my garden the ground temperature in mid February is 5 Cel (41F). This is almost warm enough to get a lot of plants growing. Last year at this time it was only 1 Cel (34F). Hints March is the month when one really must make some time for the garden because :(a) Winter pruning of hedges, roses and fruit trees needs to be completed. Do not prune plum trees at this time because it can cause the silver leaf fungus disease. (b) It is the right time to sow a lot of flower and vegetable seeds. Even if you do not want the work of sowing seeds in pots and pricking out one can get a good show of colour by sowing hardy annuals direct where you want the plants about the third week of March. Suitable types are Annual Chrysanthemum, Calendula, Clarkia, Eschscholzia, Godetia, Larkspur, and Linaria. Most vegetables can be sown, but check the packets. (c) The weeds will be growing well, and should not be allowed to seed. (d) The lawn will be growing again. Ideally give it a first light cut when it is about 3 inches long. It is also a good time to give it a feed. (e) Garden paths may well need a good clean to make them less slippery. John Rye

Dear Sir Now that the revised Tesco application for a supermarket store on the Brett Works site has finally been submitted to Babergh District Council we can now hope for another retail store in our town to cater for the needs of our ever expanding population. All the groundwork has finally been completed and reports and recommendations from all the agencies involved have been studied and finalised. Reports by Government Inspectors conducting inquiries into the application have resulted in the following conclusions:1. There is a need for an additional retail store in Hadleigh. 2. The Brett Works site is the most suitable site available and it also conforms with government recommendations for stores to be sited as close as possible to town centres. 3. The access from Bridge Street, as originally suggested by BDC as long ago as 1992 is considered suitable. 4. The roadways of the town are deemed adequate for the volume of traffic estimated to use them. 5. The risk of flooding of the store site is considered minimal and well within risk factors for this type of development. 6. Effect on flora and fauna is also considered minimal but consideration is to be given to protecting and landscaping the site. 7. Noise and lighting is considered well within permissible limits. 8. It is also anticipated that the development will provide up to 200 jobs together with parking for 200 cars and many other spin-off benefits. 9. The majority of residents (76%) want a supermarket in the town. For twelve years the Tesco Supporters Group has been campaigning for a supermarket in the town to provide a wider choice of good quality products at reasonable prices for shoppers of the town and district and at last there is an excellent chance that our objective will finally be achieved. Provided with all the relevant facts we are hopeful that our District Councillors will give their approval to the Tesco application for the benefit of the residents of our town and district. R.H.H. Smith, Chairman Tesco Supporters Group

Dear Sir To whom it may concern at Babergh District Council. My step daughter has two guinea pigs which we clean out once a week. There is enough waste to fill half a black bin liner. We keep these bags until we have about six of them and then we go to the dump in Hadleigh and get rid of them all in one go, this saves 5 or so trips to the dump, saving us valuable petrol costs and time. However, last sunday we went up to the dump and was told that we were only allowed to dump one bag per week as it costs the council to much money to dispose of six bags. My argument is this, surely it costs the council the same to dispose of 1 bag per trip for six consecutive weeks, as it does to get rid of our 6 bags in 1 trip. I hope this is just an oversight on there behalf and it will be resolved quickly or maybe they've gone completely crazy again as they so often do. I don't like to complain and sound like a moaning minnie, (no offence to any minnie's out there) but this is just crazy. Would like to hear in this great mag, if anybody else has experienced the same problem. Gary (confused) Mowles

Dear Sir I would like to write this open letter to one of your regular advertisers, Howard Gibbons. Mr Gibbons, we are all so happy you can afford to own a collection of fine classic and sports cars as well as a motor house to keep them in. We are also so relieved that you have an army of household staff who clean up after you. It's also great to see that you have managed to retain the services of Frank, your chauffeur during these challenging economic times. I am very sorry to hear that you are having to sell your Mercedes SL convertible as your motor house is too full to house it. I am also very sorry to hear your Dyson was unwell. What a dent that £65 must have made on your finances. Is that why you have decided to sell the Merc? I myself also live a privileged life which I must tell you and all our readers about. I am sure they are all dying to know. I am the proud owner of 2 Volkswagens. Unfortunately one of the said vehicles is currently sitting in my own motor house, not functioning to its full capacity and going rusty. My vacuum cleaner also was not functioning correctly just before Christmas and 42

rather than spend the £65 our local motor repair establishment told me it would cost to fix my car, I spent it on my Henry. What a fantastic investment it was. It now takes my wife half the time to clean the house. It gives her a bit more time to look after our 3 young children and there is also a little time left over for her to chauffeur me round the countryside in our one remaining 'classic' VW family car. If I am especially pleasant to her she wears a chauffeurs hat and everything. Like you I am also considering offering my car up for acquisition for any readers who may show an interest. I no longer have the space in my motor house as Henry is now proudly parked up in there. For your information its a grey 1995 VW Golf, with black interior with a beautiful rainbow pattern on the seats. It needs a bit of a vacuum so lets all thank the lord that Henry has been repaired! If anyone is interested please get in contact. My wife would be very happy to show you round the car. Be sure to keep us posted on developments at home and at work and good luck selling the SL. I am sure there will be a raft of wealthy locals knocking your motor house doors down looking to purchase a vehicle such as yours. T. David

Dear Sir A letter in the February edition of the Community News stated that East House had been gifted to the people of Hadleigh. Regretfully this is not true. When Babergh first put East House on the market I searched back through the minutes of the local government re-organisation in 1974. East House had been purchased by the Hadleigh Urban District Council and at the time of the re-organisation and division of assets East House was left with the newly formed Town Council. Unfortunately it still had a loan of some £40,000 outstanding which the new Town Council did not have the income to pay. East House when first bought by the U.D.C. had been leased to the then West Suffolk County Council and that lease was continued by Suffolk County Council. Hence Babergh took over the ownership of East House, presumably repaying the loan, but with the County Council as a ‘sitting tenant’ Eventually the County Council decided that this community building was too expensive to run and cancelled their lease, returning the building to Babergh District Council. When East House went back on the market Hadleigh Town Council put in a bid for the building but the amount they are allowed to borrow was less than half of the asking price. However when thinking of East House we all forget Toppesfield Hall. In the 1950’s the Hadleigh Urban District Council purchased Toppesfield Hall and used this as their office premises, also the Library was based there. At the 1974 re-organisation Babergh District Council moved into Toppesfield Hall, initially letting the Town Council use the meeting room. When Babergh moved to Corks Lane and put Toppesfield Hall on the market they moved the Town Council into the ground floor room of the Gas Works Cottage, (now boarded up) at I understand a low rent In the 1980’s following the closure of the Guildhall premises, it being found to be unsafe for public use the owners of the Guildhall, The Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity, found it impossible to raise enough funds to restore the complex. Government loans were required and for various reasons to enable this to happen the Town Council also took over the role of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. The Town Council took on the government loans, which they are still repaying. Also Babergh required the whole of the Gas Works Cottage (Bridge House). Babergh paid the Town Council somewhere around £30,000 to move out, but the agreement was that the money be put into the refurbishment of the Guildhall Complex. Hadleigh Town Council then took on a lease of the front part of the building, i.e. The Market Hall, and moved their offices into these premises. The Town Council continues to lease these offices, the Market Hall being re-valued at regular intervals and the rent increased appropriately. Thus the Town Council does not own the premises in which they work and have no space for enlargement should they need to do so. The Town Council did investigate the purchase of Toppesfield Hall, but to repay the mortgage they would have needed to refurbish the top two floors and rent them out for residential accommodation. Initial inquiry to the Babergh Planning Department identified that the building could now only be used for office use therefore no further proceedings were taken by the Town Council. These are the facts as I can find them in Council records so they should be the true story, unless somebody can prove that the minutes are inaccurate, or that my reading of them is. Jan Byrne

Dear Sir Ref B10/00332/RES plans for a Warehouse & Distribution Centre. It may have escaped the notice of the majority of readers that plans have been submitted to build a massive warehouse and distribution centre on land between Lady Lane and Tower Mill Lane. It will be 13,000 sq metres and stand 14 metres high - that’s as big as two football pitches and taller than a

three storey house. The planned 24 hour operation will generate significant noise from the internal processes as well as from the loading yard where HGVs and fork trucks will operate in the open from 9pm to 7am in the open. Sufficient to blight the local area including the proposed adjacent new housing. If you agree with the Town Council that this development will have a major negative impact on our town please write to the planning office at Babergh District Council to register your objection. When writing you need to quote application B10/00332/RES and your address. Roger Howlett

Dear Sir I understand from reading the Hadleigh Community News that Babergh District Council proposes to spend £2.4m on a new community facility in Hadleigh, next to the swimming pool. In summary I feel that this expenditure will not be effective use of tax payer’s money and potentially risks the viability of the existing swimming pool and other community buildings/leisure facilities in the town. When the Suffolk County Council lease of East House expired a few years ago, residents were told that the building would be sold and the money used to build a replacement swimming facility, as the existing one had reached the end of its life. We were subsequently informed that due to the poor structural condition of the pool tank, an entirely new swimming pool and building would need to be built. However when financial estimates of a new pool were received, Babergh declared that the Council’s finances were insufficient to stretch to this and so instead of a new pool, an new community facility for Hadleigh would be built. A few years on from then, this country has been gripped by a financial crisis not experienced for many decades and the town of Hadleigh has had to get used to the fact that it does not have East House. In response, community buildings like the Ansell Centre behind the URC church has adapted itself and now accommodates community groups that previously occupied East House. Similarly St Mary’s church is now developing the ‘Porch Project’ to provide youth facilities similar to that previously offered by East House. All in all, it seems that the ‘Big Society’ - as Mr Cameron likes to describe it - has stepped in to provide where previously Councils were able to. Whilst three years ago, a new community building for Hadleigh may have seemed appropriate to some (not myself I should add), it is now very apparent to me - and I’m sure many others too in Hadleigh - that this proposal is extravagant and unjustifiable expenditure. In addition, it potentially undermines the viability of existing community buildings/leisure facilities in the town. On a more positive note however, I am pleased about the new changing room facilities built at Hadleigh’s swimming pool using Sport England and BDC money. I am somewhat confused though, as to why Sport England (and BDC for that matter) would invest so much public money into a pool whose structural condition is apparently so unsound. Would anyone care to answer this? My final point however comes back to the use of the £2.4m. Surely at a time when leisure centres, swimming pools, libraries and children’s centres are closing across the country – due to the immense squeeze on public finances - this surely cannot be the right time to be building a new facility that will of course need additional tax payer's money to operate and maintain it. In my view it would be far more sensible to save the £2.4m and use it instead to either part fund a replacement pool, or keep it in case a major repair is necessary on the existing pool. Otherwise there is a risk that we could be left with no swimming facilities in the town - not exactly ideal when the town of Hadleigh continues to expand in size and child and adult obesity is still a major cost to society. J. Grist

Dear Sir I refer to Keith Doidge’s letter in your February edition and fail to recognize myself or my Hadleigh colleagues in his sweeping derogatory remark that politicians are not in for the interest of the people but for their own swagger and self gratification. For the most part we undertake this civic duty (of being a District Councillor) because we think we are competent, effect and trustworthy. Hopefully we outscore our rivals on all three qualities and get elected and re-elected. I have invited Mr. Doidge to visit a full council meeting of Babergh in order that he may see his representatives in action. Brian Riley

Dear Sir How safe are the Zebra crossings in our town here in Hadleigh, in particular the crossing in the High Street, you might well ask! For I and many have experienced near misses on that crossing. I have been approached by many of the elderly on this subject, hoping, because I do write often on many subjects of concern in the letters page of the HCN and high-lighting the problem, and that something can and will be done. I do suggest that the existing Zebra crossing be replaced by a Pelican crossing, as used in

Magdelan Road, much safer. I am hoping that someone takes this on board, and that the idea snowballs, before someone gets hurt or killed!!!!! A word of caution, taken from the Highway Code Zebra Crossings - give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped. ps These instructions in many cases have not been adhered too, this is the problem. I would like someone from the Highways to take a look at what I regard as a case for concern. John Caley Are you a new parent? Do you feel you need to get out but are not quite sure where to start? Party Piece - A New Comedy Play From HADS This year’s Spring production is the comedy play ‘Party Piece’ by Richard Harris. We are delighted to be performing this superb comedy, directed by Malcolm and Tom Hollister, following the success of our previous Richard Harris comedy. Set in adjoining gardens, it is the night of Michael’s and Roma’s (Katherine Mills and Ben Warner) fancy dress house-warming party. The evening looks set to be a lively one until a string of hilarious disasters strike, including the distinct lack of guests, a barbeque with a mind of its own, a marauding Zimmer frame and the prospect of an irate husband on the prowl. Michael’s and Roma’s patience is further tried by the arrival of their neighbours, the indomitable Mrs Henderson (Patsy Forsyth), who brings her own brand of party entertainment in the form of the domestic squabbles of her son (Nik Petchy) and daughter-in-law (Lorna Hollister). This fast-paced and very funny play packed with action promises an excellent evening of live drama performed by a cast of Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society’s best including Lee Oliver and David Walmsley. Performance dates are Thursday 31st March and Friday and Saturday 1st and 2nd of April at 7:30 in the Town Hall, Hadleigh. Tickets are on sale now from The Idler, 37 High Street, Hadleigh and Walter Wright Accountants, 89 High Street, Hadleigh. For more information call Peter Finch on 01473 825033.

Lost in or near Wentworth Close I unfortunately lost a pair of blue framed varifocal spectacles when I collapsed in Wentworth Close, Hadleigh on the evening of the 31st January 2011. They could have been lost anywhere between Hadleigh High School and Wentworth Close. If found, could you please telephone 01473 822983 and a small reward will be payable for their return? Many thanks. Steven Emmerson

Hadleigh Community Primary News Whole school Maths week In celebration of this year’s World Maths Day on Tuesday 1st March, the whole school will be involved in cookery activities during the week. This is on top of the World Maths Game we enjoy participating in every year. There will be a huge range of cross-curricular cookery activities taking place throughout the school. These include: 1. Party theme in year 1 - decorating party foods with patterns and 3D shapes as well as weighing and measuring. 2. Making pizzas in year 2 – investigating fractions with the toppings 3. Making smoothies and muffins in Year 3. This will involve doubling, halving and fractions. 4. Sweet Indian Rice in year 4 – linking to their ‘Village in India’ topic, and involving weighing, ratio and multiplying by 5 by multiplying by 10 and halving. 5. Jewish Apple cake in year 5 – linking with their Judaism topic in RE. 6. Making cocktails in year 6 – involving ratio and proportion. Year 6 will also be baking bread as part of their science work on microorganisms. On top of all of this, there will be maths quizzes for both key stages which will have prizes. Our HSA will help us to purchase some of the foodstuffs required for the event. We are sure it will be great fun, and there will be more details to follow next month. Year 6 visit Sydney Brown Court Every fortnight, our year 6 children have been visiting the residents of Sydney Brown Court for half an hour to share their work with them, talk about the topics they are studying and to ask the residents about their own experiences. This is proving to be a superb community project where young and not so young are able to learn from one another. Love is in the air! On Monday 14th February, our children celebrated Valentine’s Day by having yet another superb lunch provided by our independent catering staff. Along with their usual daily offerings of salad bar, three choices of main meal and three choices of vegetables, the children were offered ‘Love Heart’ biscuits as part of their dessert! On Friday 11th February, the children also celebrated Valentine’s Day by having a disco, kindly arranged by our HSA. One hundred and fifty children were able to attend each disco (one for years Reception to three and the other for years four to six). A good time was had by all and money was raised for the school. We would like to thank the HSA team for their continued support. Reception learn about ‘bug’ control! On Thursday 3rd February, our Reception classes had a visit from the school nurse to teach them about the importance of washing our hands. The nurse gave a “slime talk” with her snail – learning how to cope with coughs and colds and keep germs at bay. The children had fun learning how to wash the “glitter bugs” off their hands – making sure they washed between their fingers, around their thumbs and across the back of their hands and up their wrist. Education Sunday On Sunday 13th February, St Mary’s church had a special Education Sunday service. Eight of our Year 5 pupils very ably performed ‘When a Knight Won his Spurs’ on the hand bells as part of our school’s contribution. Our new Head Teacher, Mr Jackson, also gave a short talk about his first impressions of the school. It was great to have the support of parents and staff and to be able to enrich our links with the local churches.

What a busy month we have had! We are very proud that the children managed to raise an incredible £1788 for the NSPCC this month. They took part in drawing activities and a sponsored spelling event in order to raise this fantastic sum of money. Thanks to Cathy Couchman, who visited two of our assemblies to raise awareness of the NSPCC’s work. We had a really exciting Road Safety Day when we were visited by four Road Safety Officers from Suffolk County Council. The children participated in a variety of activities, including training to be Junior Road Safety Officers, poetry writing and using the ‘Street Fleet’ equipment to set up signs and roads in the hall. In the afternoon, all the children took part in a quiz to test their understanding of road safety. It was a really fun day and the children learned a lot about keeping safe. Three of our Year 6 pupils have become our E-safety Champions after attending an internet safety conference. They were involved in workshops about personal safety and using the internet wisely. They have since reported back to the whole school in assembly. We were delighted to host all the children from Beaumont Primary School recently. They came along to share a special maths theme day with us. The children from both schools were mixed together and worked in groups to play maths games, solve maths mysteries and design patterns. All the children watched a performance by the Quantum Theatre Company. The play was a mystery tale about the theft of a counting machine in Victorian times. It was a great day and it was wonderful to see all the children getting on so well together! Thank you to Willow class and Mrs Dowling for organising one of our assemblies. The Year 6 children taught us all about keeping safe in different situations. They also focused on being wise, which has been our theme for Worship this half term. On the same day, Rowan class visited St Mary’s Church to experience being involved in a church service. Thanks to Martin Thrower for leading the service and making it a special experience for the children. We had a great turn out of children, parents and staff at Education Sunday – thanks to you all! This was an opportunity for the Hadleigh schools to get involved in a service at St Mary’s. Our children talked about the things they liked about the school, performed the recorder and sang our favourite hymn. Also, they talked about Christian values and read the story of King Solomon, the wise ruler. The children did really well, speaking confidently. Thanks to Bildeston Primary School for inviting our talented musicians to take part in a themed music day. They had a great time composing new music and performing to an audience at the end of the day. The children have also had fun at the new Young Writers club, writing the school magazine with Miss Oliver. They have written interesting articles about school events, alongside riddles, sports reports and play reviews – well done for all your hard work.

First outing for Mobile Skate Park A new mobile skate park is set to entertain school children during the half-term holidays – thanks to funding from the Babergh East Local Strategic Partnership. The Babergh East LSP, a body that brings together the local council with other public services in the area and representatives from the business, voluntary and community sectors, released funding after an application from the Babergh Community Safety Partnership (CSP). The skate park, which cost £11,000, consists of several different types of ramps that are incorporated into a trailer. This equipment can be used indoors or outdoors making this an all year round provision. Cllr Penny Clarke, Chairman of the Babergh East LSP, said: “The LSP is delighted that we were able to fund the purchase of this important equipment. “A mobile skate park is an ideal way to provide facilities for an increasing popular sport on a temporary basis, it can be utilised across the district and also hired out to interested parties. “The mobile skate park could be taken to rural areas where there is a gap in service provision for young people but also where there is potential for anti-social behaviour.” Julia Catterwall, Babergh’s Substance Misuse Officer, said: “The mobile skate park will be taken out in the half terms and the summer holidays. “There is going be a partnership approach to where the mobile skate park will visit and it will be targeted to specific areas and will include input from the BDC sports and leisure team, youth & connexions, police, local youth groups and the ASB team. “By providing diversionary activities enables young people to avoid crime and it is an opportunity whereby partner agencies can positively engage with young people.” And Cllr Nick Ridley, Chairman of Babergh’s CSP, added: "This equipment provides an excellent addition to our leisure team's facilities and means that we can build on already well established good practice developed at Babergh to provide positive activities for young people. “The funding provided by the Babergh East LSP has been welcome in these difficult financial times and goes to show that with some imagination and determination the council can build on its successful services for the benefit of Babergh's residents." Partners have already received training from the skate park providers and the mobile skate park will be making its first appearances during half term, one of the locations was the Hadleigh Leisure Centre.

Newton Girls in Golf FREE group lessons are to be offered as part of a golf club’s Girls in Golf initiative. The bid to bring more women into the sport is being launched by Newton Green Golf Club following its recent achievement of GolfMark high achiever status. As well as welcoming women to learn the sport for free, the club is also inviting women’s sports team engaged in hockey, football, cricket, rugby and any other sport the chance to have a go at golf. As an outreach exercise, Newton Green professional Tim Cooper is prepared to visit local clubs to offer them free coaching sessions at their own headquarters to see if they would like to have a go at golf when their own sports are having their close seasons. Tim Cooper explained: “We are already tying up an arrangement with the ladies teams at Sudbury Hockey Club, and would like to hear from any other sports clubs that have wpmen interested in learning about golf. All coaching will be completely free. “We are also taking the opportunity to offer this service to any type of club, such as youth and adult male soccer teams, who would like to have a go at golf and have a group lesson at their own ground – perhaps on one of their training nights. “Already we are offering taster sessions to a number of groups from the scouting movement. In fact, any organisation which feels it would enjoy having a go at golf should contact us.” He said the main Girls in Golf initiative at the club would be free lessons over five weeks for women at Newton every Tuesday morning from March 29 and every Saturday morning from April 2, both sessions commencing at 10 am. Anyone interested in taking part in any of the initiatives should ring 01787-313215

Hadleigh United F.C. Youth Under 12’s 22nd January 2011: Kesgrave Kestrels 0 Hadleigh United 6 HADLEIGH UNDER 12’s began strongly and had soon taken an early lead when a cross into the box by Tommy Thorby was back headed into the goal by Jack Lambert. Hadleigh applied the pressure and pushing forward, a neat Pictured are Hadleigh United under cross from Harry Seager was 12’s in pre match team talk with slotted into the bottom right of Captain Oliver Peters the net by Luke Brown to increase the lead. Play continued with Hadleigh providing some good passing sequences, this again paid off when Tommy Thorby's cross found Oliver Peters who spun on the spot and delivered the ball into the back of the net leaving the keeper with no chance. Kesgrave made attempts before half time but these were swiftly dealt with by defenders Jackson Crisp, William Simmons, Callum Morrin and Harry Seager. The second half continued at a quick pace and when Callum Morrin's pass from the halfway line cleared Kesgrave's defence, Oliver Peters again increased Hadleigh's lead with his strike into the right corner of the net. Hadleigh kept the pressure on and a cross into the box from Jack Lambert was hammered home by Tommy Thorby. The Hadleigh boys continued to work together and gained a final goal when Oliver Peters gained his hat trick heading the ball into the back of the net to take the final score Kesgrave Kestrels 0 - Hadleigh United 6. 12th February 2011: Hadleigh United 7 - St.Johns 3 Hadleigh United under 12's played a superb match against St. Johns and took an early lead when a penalty kick was delivered into the back of the net by Oliver Peters. Within a short space of time St Johns also found themselves stepping up for a penalty but Hadleigh's Matt Talman made no mistake in saving the shot. Play flowed with Hadleigh gaining the greater possession and Tyler French had soon increased the lead with his fine strike. St Johns pushed forward and gained one back. Hadleigh once more took control of the game and saw Oliver Peters taking the ball all the way down the line and neatly tucking into the box to be finished off by Arran Tampion. Played continued at a quick pace and some poor defending increased Hadleigh’s lead when a St John's pass back slipped into the net. Hadleigh maintained the pressure and again great play from Oliver Peter's saw him gain his second to take the score to Hadleigh 5 St John's 1 at half time. Both teams pushed on in the second half and Oliver Peter's quickly gained his hat trick and increased Hadleigh’s lead. St John's upped the pace and scored two in quick succession. Hadleigh resettled and again piled on the pressure. Pushing forward Hadleigh gained the final goal of the match and his fourth when Oliver Peter's left the keeper with little chance. Final score Hadleigh 7 - St John's 3.

Hadleigh United Football Club

Hadleigh Tyre Group

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd. www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United resumed regular action after a spell of bad weather with a trip to Haverhill. Goals by Josh Mayhew and Ben Deacon gave Hadleigh a comfortable lead but then things started to go wrong. We gave away a penalty kick that was converted before the home side scored another couple to go in front. In the last minute we thought Liam Jennings had equalized but it was disallowed and Haverhill had won by three goals to two. An enjoyable coach trip to Norwich United produced a good game which ended all square at one goal each. We scored fist with a great shot from Josh Mayhew but the Norfolk side equalized from a penalty kick midway through the first half. The home game against Mildenhall saw Hadleigh dominate the first half with Ollie Canfer scoring. After the interval the West Suffolk side gained control and Hadleigh ended up losing by two goals to one. Another match at the Millfield followed with Wisbech our visitors. The first half was evenly balanced with the only goal being scored by the opposition from a penalty kick. In the second period we held our own in the early stages with shots from Ben Deacon and Jack Severy being well saved. But Wisbech scored two more goals to inflict a three goal defeat as Hadleigh ended a well beaten team. A midweek trip to Cambridge Regional College produced an excellent match. Josh Mayhew converted a penalty kick for Hadleigh but the final score was a defeat for us three goals to one. The third goal for the opposition came in the last minute to give the scoreline a rather flattering look. Dereham then visited the Millfield on a sunny afternoon and a large crowd enjoyed a superb display by Hadleigh. We won by two goals to nil after Danny Allen had scored in the first half while Josh Mayhew added the second in the last minute. The Reserves lost by four goals to one at home to Braintree. We were trailing by four goals at the interval but Kieran Dilloway netted for us in the second period. A friendly match against Clare Town ended in a good win for our Reserves by four goals to nil. A trip to league leaders Brantham Reserves saw Hadleigh Reserves concede four goals in the second half of a defeat by six goals to one. Deasko Garner scored our consolation goal. Our Ridgeons Youth Team are having a splendid season with the match at Coplestonians being won by five goals to one with a hat-trick from Patrick Armstrong and others from Deasko Garner and Michael Barwick. Cornard were beaten by two goals to one with Garner and Harry Evans on target. We then lost to Clacton by two goals to one, Haynes scoring. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were. Terry Adams, Rolf Beggerow and Chris Rose. Terry Adams
