The Oddfellows:- Today’s Oddfellows takes inspiration from the original society for the ‘ODD’ fellows, or those who could not be categorized into specific guilds. Some of its groups or lodges date back to the 18th century. Wendy Atkins, long standing official of the Ipswich branch, outlined the history of the organisation which was set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state or NHS. The aim was and still is to provide help to members and communities when they need it. The friendly societies are non-profit mutual organisations owned by their members. All income is passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits. Although the present day Oddfellows, who come from all walks of life, enjoy a variety of social activities, the underlying role of the worldwide organisation is still one of support and care. Croquet:- By popular request we returned to Ipswich Croquet Club for another afternoon of this enjoyable but highly skilful version of the game. With two experienced players on hand it wasn’t long before members were successfully able to manoeuvre their ball through the hoops and apply some competitive tactics too. A thoroughly relaxing afternoon in the beautiful surroundings of Fynn Valley Golf Club where the croquet club is located. The Gentle Ramblers:- This month’s walk saw the Fidelis ramblers exploring the picturesque surroundings of Flatford Mill. After an exhilarating trek the group enjoyed a well-earned comfort stop at the National Trust tea room there.
