Panto returns to Hadleigh, Oh yes it does... Yes HADS is back in action, with a panto called ‘The Hadleigh Cinderella’ written by its new chairman Trev Clarke. Cinders (who lives up Highlands Road) is locked away in her house under the guard of the two ugly sisters, Apple and Core, and her ‘wicked’ step mother. Poor Cinders is left at home all day to do all the chores, but wait, Buttons is on hand to cheer up poor Cinders and her cat Puddles with some singing and dancing, and some humour too. While all this is happening the Prince (who lives at Priory Hall) is on the look out for a date and decides to hold a Ball at the Town Hall to try and get himself a girlfriend, with help from his servants Chas & Dave. Will Cinders be invited to the Ball? Will the prince find himself a girlfriend? And will this panto have a happy ending? The Panto is on the 15th, 16th and 17th of January 2015 at 7:30pm with a matinee performance on 17th at 2pm. The panto is being held at St Marys Church, which is being transformed into a performance area and is a show NOT to be missed. During the show the Porch Project will be holding a raffle to raise money for its funding. St Marys Church wants to start using its building for more community projects so this is the ideal chance for the building to be used for such an event. Adult tickets are £5 each and Children £3.50, and are available to buy from Keith Avis Newsagents on the High Street, Hadleigh.

Thank You from the Brendan Oakes Trust and the Alison Fracella Research Trust A very big thank you to everyone who supported us in so many ways at our Quiz Night on November 29th helping to make the occasion such a success. The Ansell Centre was once again packed for the event and everyone said that the evening was really enjoyable and great fun. The ploughman’s supper was a big hit with everyone too! On the night, after expenses, we raised an amazing £1,466 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. A huge thank you to Keith Avis Printers for once again printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Many thanks also to the many local businesses and people who were so generous in their donations of the many, fantastic raffle prizes. Special thanks to Sue and Roy for all their help and to Amber for running the raffle so well. A big thank you to Mark David for his donation of a full day course at the Cooking Experience, to Hadleigh Tyres and to Greggs Bakers for their donation of the bread rolls for the supper. With tickets already being reserved for next year we feel sure our joint quiz is set become an annual event! Thank you once again to everyone who gave us such generous support from Sue and Rob Kettlewell and Val and Mark Oakes

Rosa Simon Music Fund

GSOLICITORS IBBONS

"Once again, the generosity of Hadleigh continues to be demonstrated in the amazing and ongoing support being given to the Fund. Many thanks to the bikers at the Black Shuck Rally club who donated £250, the Virtue and Silence Masonic Lodge who raised an amazing £900 from their recent dinner dance and a year 8 pupil who went to St. Mary's School but whose family has now moved to the Welsh borders and who gave £35.

Howard at Niagara Falls

It is fitting, therefore, that the whole community of Hadleigh has been recognised for its extraordinarily compassionate response to Rosa's death by being given a special recognition award at the 2014 Stars of Suffolk (please see photo) run by the East Anglian Daily Times. Thanks to the kindness of Andrew Frolish, the St. Mary's Primary School head teacher, the award currently resides in the reception area of the School for all to see. The sponsors of the award, Flagship Housing Association, also contributed £1000 to the Fund. Which brings me onto my main message for this month: we need to start making serious inroads into the Fund as soon as possible to realise its aim of spreading Rosa's love of music and dancing to as many local children as possible. With a range of concerts being organised in the name of the Fund over the next 12 months, it is clear that it will be around for a while - and we have money to spend on music initiatives! So, in a reverse Bob Geldof mode (and without any profanities), please will more local schools, churches, playgroups, registered child minders and indeed private music teachers put in bids, please? So give us your bids and let's make laughter through music a reality for all our children! Application forms are online at: http://www.rosasimonmusicfund.co.uk/index.php?option=com_conten t&view=article&id=12&Itemid=127 "

Happy New Year to my loyal readers. Just before Christmas I was stirring in my four poster in the early morning. The wireless had just popped into life (in fact it is a Sony Digicube alarm clock which I have had since the mid 70s when it was state of the art). None other than the dulcet tones of Jane Haylock of The Idler was speaking to the County about Hadleigh. It sounded as if she was next to me. I popped into see Jane as I was concerned lest she had been broadcasting in her housecoat. Apparently, it is going to be the year of the sheep in Hadleigh so keep an eye on how you can participate. Sad news reached me that Ann Stephenson (who used to own Odds and Ends) passed away in December. Even in adversity Ann had a sense of humour and she was a real local character. I happened to mention pickled walnuts in one of my despatches. Many of you will know John Sargeant “Busky” of Polstead who tells me that he pickles his own. I have his walnuts in a jar and they are delicious and went down a treat on Boxing Day. Thank you. My mother and I did another winter Transatlantic Crossing on board Queen Mary 2. Even in heavy seas and gale force winds, the ship was as stable as could be. There is nothing to beat afternoon tea in the Queen’s Room with the band playing. Another local resident, Elsie Brett from Elmsett, happened to be on board with her family. It was quite something to be discussing the foibles of Frank and Maria mid Atlantic. In New York my mother and I thought that The Rockettes’ Christmas Show at Radio City was absolutely fantastic. The Wurlitzer organ had two consoles and it was a treat to hear. New York was freezing and we had to cancel our train journey to Niagara due to heavy snow. We were able to fly to Toronto and a limousine was waiting to motor us the two hours to Niagara. You can see me on board the Hornblower (formerly Maid of the Mist) where I got soaked as we went right up to the Falls. Just before Christmas, Maria was concerned about Frank’s sprouts; they were like buttons. Special feeding brought forth mighty hearts for Christmas. A sale of part of a parcel of land can be complicated. Clients are always surprised that a plan drawn to scale is required by the Land Registry. We can put you in touch with experts to do that. One then has to consider what rights may need to be granted or reserved. Why don’t you make a New Year’s Resolution to put your Will in place and you could make a Lasting Power of Attorney at the same time. We will await your call! Howard Gibbons

Damage to your car? Get those scuffs and scrapes seen to now As winter takes hold now is the time to check for damage on cars that may have been picked up over the past few months. Many drivers will have minor bodywork damage, scuffs and scrapes waiting to be repaired. Mike Gilderson of Scuffs and Scrapes says it is important to act swiftly and get the damage repaired now before it has a chance to get worse. For those little bodywork repairs such as a light collision in a car park or minor scuffs and scrapes through general everyday use there is an easy answer. Mike can come to your house or workplace to repair your vehicle on the same day. With most single repairs costing less than your excess it makes sense to have a SMART repair and not claim on your car insurance. What is a SMART repair? SMART, stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Techniques. It is a specialised method used to professionally repair minor damage to vehicle body work, without the inconvenience and expense involved with replacing, or respraying multiple panels. Using the same body shop quality paints and materials, infra red drying, and specifically designed spray guns, the damaged area is repaired and blended into the undamaged area, leaving your car as original as possible. Smart repairs have been developed to offer a quick, easy and cost effective way of repairing vehicle damage. The repairs are localised to the affected area only, as a result they are far smaller and much less time consuming to complete. The real advantage of this is a massive reduction in cost; a SMART repair can be up to 50% to 70% less than a body shop alternative. A secondary advantage is that Mike offers a fully mobile service that comes to you; this means that you will no longer need to put up with the inconvenience of living without your vehicle while it is at the body shop for repair. How do you match the paint? Using the latest water based colour mixing scheme, and a computer program to establish the correct formula for your car, Mike will mix the desired quantity. This includes all the metallic, pearl, and solid finishes, used by vehicle manufactures today. All modern cars have a water based paint from factory, so Mike is matching like for like. Do SMART repairs last? A correctly carried out SMART repair will be no different to a correctly performed body shop repair regarding longevity. All Mike’s repairs come with a two year warranty. SMART repairs are not a cheap alternative Although usually cheaper, SMART repairs are not a cheap DIY type of repair. The advances in paints, and regulations, mean that a SMART repair performed properly will be no less in quality than a decent, traditional body shop repair. So don’t put off repairing those annoying scuffs and scrapes. For your free no obligation estimate call your local SMART repairer Mike Gilderson at Scuffs and Scrapes on 01473 824909 or 07425 583478. Don’t forget to mention the Community News when replying to this ad to get a massive 15% discount off Mike’s already great value prices

Do the government really pay out up to £15,000 for installing PV?

Some solar PV companies will tell you that you can get up to £15,000 from a government backed scheme for installing solar panels. At first glance this claim seems too good to be true. So is there anything in it? Well the simple answer is YES. However, this is not paid out up front and it is not a lump sum. The £15,000 is paid through the Feed in Tariff scheme. The Feed in Tariff is the only government backed incentive scheme available for individuals who want to install solar PV. Payment through the Feed in Tariff are index linked and are tax free and the scheme lasts for 20 years. So how does it work? Well first of all you have to install a solar PV system. From the minute it is installed it will start to generate electricity. A typical system can generate up to 3600 kWh in the first year. The Feed in Tariff currently pays out 13.88p for every kWh that you generate. In addition to that you would also receive Export Tariff payments of 4.77p for 50% of what you generate and if you use the 50% of the energy you will make a significant Well we have had a fantastic year this year as far as saving off your electricity bill. sunshine is concerned, but as the remnants of Hurricane So lets do the maths, based on generating 3600kWh: Gonzalo recently reminded us, our weather is always 3600 x 13.88p (Feed in Tariff) = £499.68 subject to change andx no more so than during the winter 1800 4.77p (Export Tariff) = £85.86 months. 27th May 1930 – 14th December 2014 Ann Stephenson died peacefully at home in Hadleigh on Sunday 14th December, 2014 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. She was born in Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1930, daughter of Eileen (nee Porter) and Eric Laithwaite Stephenson an advertising copy writer of Larkhall, Clapham, London. With the onset of World War II she went to live in Sheffield with an Aunt (sister of her father) and Uncle as it was perceived to be safer than South London and remained in Sheffield for the duration and indeed until she took up full time employment never returning to live with her parents. She had studied domestic science and took posts with Sheffield and Leeds universities. In 1956 (?) she became bursar of Madingley Hall, Cambridge. This was probably the job she enjoyed most but around 1961 she moved to the GLC (maybe still LCC) at County Hall as part of their schools inspectorate. It was not a position she enjoyed and soon moved to University College London to become Domestic Bursar of the then newly built Ifor Evans Hall – a UCL hall of residence and soon had Max Rayne House added to her charge. In 1984 Ann took early retirement and moved to Hadleigh taking over the proprietorship of Odds & Ends guest House at the north end of Hadleigh High Street. Finally retiring from that in 1999. She was active in local politics being elected to Hadleigh Town Council and Babergh Councils representing the Liberal Democrats. She became Mayor of Hadleigh for the year 2000-01. Ann never married and is survived by her brother Brian and just two cousins. December is always a busy time in primary schools! The month began with our annual Christmas Fayre. Once again, this was a great success. The children enjoyed playing a variety of games and getting creative with Christmas craft activities. Lots of children chose presents for loved ones and wrapped them in the ‘Secret Santa’ room. The barbeque was very popular and there were huge queues to see Santa in his Grotto! The Fayre started with the Key Stage 2 children singing carols followed by super violin performances. Well done to all the children involved. We must say a big thank you to all the parents and staff members who organised the Fayre or helped out on the day. Putting on such an event is a big task and we are very grateful to all involved! As always, thanks to the visitors who have supported our Worship this month, including Pastor Chris Todd and Reverend Daniel Thompson. Worship themes this month have been ‘Creativity’ and Advent. The children gave really thoughtful contributions when discussing Advent and the meaning of Christmas. It is always lovely to see children volunteering to take on extra responsibilities. However, it has been particularly nice to see our Year 6 children volunteering to become librarians recently. They have taken this opportunity to promote books and celebrate reading. They run a regular club in the library, attended by lots of younger children. The younger children are supported in choosing and changing books. Also, it is really delightful to see the Year 6 children reading to the younger children, helping to get them excited and enthusiastic about books. Well done, librarians! The children in Nursery and Reception performed ‘Whoops a Daisy Angel’ and the children in Year 1 and 2 put on a production of ‘Hey Ewe’. Both plays were retellings of the traditional Christmas Nativity story. The costumes were fantastic and we would like to thank all the adults who supported the children by helping them to learn lines and dances. After all the hard work in rehearsals, the children performed really well, singing and dancing beautifully! Well done to all the children involved. Well done to the Year 5 children, who put on a superb violin performance for their parents and the rest of the school. This has taken a lot of practice and hard work. We are very grateful to the violin teacher, Mrs Davison, who has inspired the children this term. We are very proud of the children – they have shown perseverance and enthusiasm while preparing for the performance. Congratulations to all the children whose achievements were celebrated in our recent assembly. As well as many certificates from school, children shared their achievements from outside school. It was incredible to see all of the different talents, medals, trophies and special awards on show, including horseriding, music examinations, swimming and charity fundraising. One of our girls has recently become a national dance champion – what an amazing achievement! All of the children have worked very hard this term and we had much to celebrate! Thanks to all of the people who organised the ‘Inspire’ Christmas workshops at St Mary’s Church. Our children found the activities totally engaging and were very inspired! The children thought carefully about special gifts from God, such as our planet and all the animals and plants on it. The children visited three interactive areas representing aspects of the Christmas story and met the key characters, including Mary, the Angel Gabriel and some of the animals in the stable. We are really proud of the five St Mary’s children who were confirmed recently at the church. One of the girls was also baptised. It was a very special event for them and one that they’ll never forget. Since their confirmation, the girls have talked about the experience in whole school and class assemblies. The children were confident and proud and we are delighted for them! We finished off the term with three exciting Christmas events in one day! The children enjoyed their Christmas lunch (there were some wonderful Christmas hat creations on show!), followed by our traditional Carol Service at St Mary’s Church. Finally, they danced to lots of Christmas music at the disco, which was organised by the Parent Support Group. What an exciting way to end the term and prepare for Christmas! Merry Christmas to everyone in the school and Hadleigh communities and we shall see you again in the New Year!

ChinaGarden Kersey Mill Newsletter What an amazing year we have had at tut mill, the highlight had to be seeing 18 months of hard work come to fruition with the wheel turning for the first time in approximately 100 years on November 11th, many thanks to Bill Griffiths, Chris Hulcoop, Paul Cuthbert, Mark Barnard, Callum Davies, George de Lara-Bell Gary Barnes and Kegan Jay for all the hands on work with the wheel. Since November 11th the remaining 7 buckets have now been replaced and it looks amazing, we still have some plates to fix to the broken and cracked Starts, the Starts are the arms that hold the buckets. Needham Fabrications have kindly made some plates the same shape as the Starts that straddle the break and sandwich the Start adding strength and reinforcement that will hold them together and prevent further damage. Santa’s workshop was so well attended, due to the incredible demand we added two additional days and a further two sessions, lots of thanks to all those that attended and supported the event and a huge thank you to those that helped with the running of Santa’s workshop, without doubt our Elves could have an amazing career ahead, working with children, you made it a fantastic event and a very memorable Christmas for so many. Jasper and Ollie the two donkies kindly lent to us by Cliff, Pat and Chris at Cobwebs were a great hit and seemed to enjoy the visit to Kersey Mill as much as the children did. Pictured are some of the elves with Jasper and Ollie. Looking forward to 2015, work will commence hopefully in January on the Pit Wheel, the Pit Wheels is attached to the Water Wheel by a shaft and as the water wheel turns so does the pit wheel, this in is the main cog that transfers the power from the water wheel to the machinery within the mill. The Pit Wheel has a large cast iron rim approximately 16 feet in diameter with wooden spokes and wooden teeth, we need to repair the spokes that are rotten and replace the teeth with kiln dried oak (purchased with the profits from Santa’s workshop), a precise job as each tooth needs to be individually produced to fit the rim and existing metal cogs attached to the shaft that eventually will turn the stones and the cogs that sit above the pit wheel and provide power to the machinery on the upper floors including the sack hoist. If there are any carpenters that would like to volunteer to help with this task we would be delighted to hear from you. We have had several people who over the last year have come forward and sponsored a tooth for £50, each tooth will be numbered and a plaque adjacent will record the sponsor’s name, thank you if you are one of those that have already done so and for those wishing to please do get in touch. We hope in the new year to install some health and safety measures within the wheel house, we need to fit a large amount of railings and guard rails around the wheel and repair the various trip hazards on the floor, once these are in place we hope to have another open day and invite the public in to see the wheel turning. Wishing you all a Happy New Year

Christmas Lighting Up Event Sunday 30 November 2014 What a wonderful afternoon we had in Hadleigh for our Lighting Up. Peppa Pig made her appearance early so she could see as many children as possible and she was besieged all afternoon – who would have thought the Town Clerk and Cllr Jan Byrne would have spent three hours acting as her minder! Santa and his reindeer were also kept busy all afternoon seeing lots of children with their Christmas wish lists. Santa did say that he was looking forward to putting his feet up by the fire in Lapland later that evening! The fair and street stalls all put on a good display and were also very busy. There was plenty to do and lots to eat and drink – for the adults as well as the children. When the time came for Peppa Pig to make her way to the stage the Market Place was packed with people and making a path for her to get through with the Mayor wasn’t easy! When she finally made it to the stage she got rather excited and had the Mayor in a bear hug followed by switching all the lights off rather than the tree lights on – but she did get there eventually and the tree in the Market Place looks lovely with its new lights on. Hadleigh Town Council hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and wish all the residents and traders of Hadleigh a very Happy and Prosperous 2015.

Happy New Year My thoughts and best wishes have been with you over the festive season and thanks to those of you who sent cards. In lieu of Christmas card I have made a donation to St Elizabeth's Hospice. I would like to wish my family, friends and neighbours a happy and healthy 2015. Claire Ford

Reg charity no 1124029 Here we are, January again and time for New Year resolutions. I’ve heard talk of dieting, stopping bad habits (I hope that doesn’t apply to me hoarding things) and new health plans. One of our supporters is already keeping fit for a very special reason. Dave Carr is training for the London Marathon in April to raise money for SESAW. Dave hopes to complete the 26.2 miles in 4 hours, as he did in Edinburgh four years ago. You can read more and donate on Dave’s fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/David-Carr12 Looking back at 2014 we thank everyone who supported SESAW, including those who braved miserable weather to help raise £1805 at our Christmas Fair and Grand Raffle. An unusual event took place when a party of SESAW Volunteers was treated to a tour of the Mayor’s Parlour in Ipswich. On a sadder note Boff, our resident tailless tabby who often greeted visitors, died in November. A gentleman among cats, Boff was respected by all, including us canines, and will be greatly missed. I’ve just been out with lovely Debbie who responded to my plea for new helpers a few months ago, but we still need dog walkers and animal carers. Please leave a message if you can spare one morning a week, or would like to help with fundraising in and around Hadleigh. We have many animals awaiting new homes including a deaf dog named Angel and Harvey the whippet, her constant companion. Next time I’ll tell you more about the animals but now I’ve run out of time. Dispelling Those Divorce Myths You may find yourself in a situation where your marriage is in trouble and like many people, you talk to friends and search the internet for help and guidance. Although this support can be useful, the information can be misleading. For example there are various myths. Myth 1: There is no such thing as a common law husband and wife. Even if you have lived together with one another for many years, you do not have automatic legal rights against the other. If however, you have lived together for a long time Ivana Radovic, and then get married, this period of cohabitation Family Lawyer may be taken into account in any financial settlement. Myth 2: You can get divorced anytime. Wrong, you have to be married for at least 1 year before you can start divorce proceedings. You can separate within the first year of marriage and that will count towards any period of separation. Myth 3: He/she will get a reduced share of the assets if they are to blame for the divorce. Wrong. Why you are getting divorced is not taken into consideration when splitting assets. Myth 4: A parent doesn’t have the right to see their child if they are not paying child maintenance. Wrong. Whether or not they pay maintenance doesn’t affect whether you see your child. Myth 5: I wasn’t unfaithful as we were already separated. Wrong. Until you are officially divorced, this is still classed as “adultery. Myth 6: Being separated for 2 years or more automatically means you are divorced. Wrong. You still have to through the formal divorce process. What you must remember is there is no “one size fits all when it comes to divorce. Everyone’s situation is different and you really should seek early advice to ensure you protect your interests in the divorce process. To help with this difficult time, we offer a fixed fee appointment with one of the Gotelee Family Lawyers. We have offices in Ipswich, Hadleigh and Felixstowe. Fidelis Activity News Thinking of replacement windows, doors, fascia, soffits or conservatory?

THEN CALL US FIRST!!

Ballet Lovers’ Treat Not for the faint hearted but strangely enjoyable was Matthew Bourne’s unique portrayal of the disturbing story ’Lord of the Flies’ with talented young dancers locally recruited. In preparation for the ballet members first indulged in a delicious lunch at the Assembly Rooms, Norwich. The Royal Ballet Company’s production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which members saw when it was beamed in live from Royal Opera House, London to Cineworld, Ipswich, was in sharp contrast to the weighty Bourne production. First ‘Woolly’ Workshop:- A very productive morning preparing the component parts for the sheep bunting which will adorn the High Street during the forthcoming Hadleigh Year of the Sheep celebrations in 2015. Instant Travel Stop:- There are not many people who would be willing and able to step in at the very last moment and give a talk to a room full of strangers. That is exactly what Bridget Keevil of Travel Stop, Hadleigh did when the original speaker on the Fidelis programme was unable to attend. Not only did Bridget fill the gap but she also gave members an interesting insight into the world of an independent travel agency. From her humble beginnings in part of a converted railway station in Elmswell, it wasn’t long before Bridget’s reputation for a personal, caring and efficient service meant bigger premises were needed. The upward trend and reliably good service continued, culminating in the opening of her third agency in High Street, Hadleigh. Bridget makes sure that her staff adopt the same work ethic as her own; giving top priority to understanding customers’ needs and going the extra mile to provide them. Travel Stop has several innovative, attractive schemes in place, one of which is monthly ‘travel’ lunches at Hintlesham Golf Club. Bridget is delighted to be one of the independent businesses on the High Street as the size, friendliness and caring nature of the town sits well with her own ideas for her travel company. Sincere thanks to Bridget for a most enjoyable talk preceded by generous amounts of Gluhwein and mince pies. Unhurried Shopping:- Relaxing retail therapy with delicious refreshments in the delightful surroundings of Hintlesham Barns. There was something for everyone in, owner, Julie Girling’s eclectic mix of gifts, jewellery, essential accessories, high quality pre-loved clothes and some very familiar retro items. 10th Christmas Supper:- Hintlesham Hall provided an elegant backdrop for the group’s tenth Christmas supper. Ladies dressed for the occasion and enjoyed a seasonal two course meal with all the trimmings and some light diversions with their coffee. Jan Devey

The time leading up to Christmas is a wonderful time of year to be working in a primary school. At Beaumont this is no exception. As I write this, festive activities have been in full swing, with Christmas carols being practiced, seasonal plays being performed and parties being organised. The children in the younger Butterfly and Bumblebee classes, put on a fabulous performance of ‘Scarecrow’s Christmas’. The acting and singing were marvellous, and it was great to see all the children enjoying their different roles in the play. The parents of the children proudly watched them happily perform their different roles. As part of the children’s work in R.E. and in the lead up to Christmas the children in Bumblebee class had the opportunity to take part in an excellent Advent workshop put on by the people at St. Mary’s church. They learnt all about the different parts of the Christmas story and had an opportunity to make Christmas cards. The Dragonflies class did their bit in spreading the Christmas cheer by performing for the residents at Magdalen House. The residents really enjoyed meeting the children and listening to them perform various traditional Christmas carols. Our school football team have been busy competing in a tournament held here at Beaumont. The team did extremely well and secured a hard fought 4th place. The tournament, organised by Premier Sports a sports coaching company, involved a number of local schools. On another sporting note the children took part in a sponsored keep fit session in aid of the NSPCC. They did a brilliant job completing the keep fit session and in collecting sponsors. Between them, the children raised a huge £470 for this worthwhile cause. Cathy, from the charity, came and received the enormous cheque from some of the children who took part in the challenge. Class 5’s singing voices were put to good use as they were asked to sing the Twelve Days of Christmas for local radio station Town 102. The station uses the recordings of the schools singing the song in the lead up to Christmas on the breakfast show. The class sang beautifully for resident DJ Wayne Bavin, who visited the school to record them for his show. Lastly, at the end of the Autumn term, the whole school was treated to a performance of the Wizard of Oz. The two young actors, from the travelling theatre company, managed to captivate all the children with their superb performances. The children were amazed at how many different parts the two actors could play!

It’s Winter so don’t forget to STRETCH! Stretching is vital for muscle health. Whether you are a professional athlete, play amateur football, hockey, rugby or basketball, a keen cyclist, runner or swimmer, even if you are just walking the dog every day, no matter what your level of fitness keeping muscle flexibility is key to good muscle health. Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance. HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need. CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue. Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained. For more information on the benefits of stretching or treatments and if you would like a personal stretching treatment plan please call Karen Ann on 07772 286106.

Will 2015 Be Your Year ?? New Year resolutions are hard to keep but instead of feeling that you have to “give up” something, focussing on the positive aspect can mean you’ll succeed where others fail. Losing weight is probably the number one resolution at this time of year. We cut out this, that and the other and end up feeling deprived, hungry and miserable – and it’s usually a hard slog to lose just a few pounds. Cambridge Weight Plan dieters often discover many other benefits from losing weight. Apart from the obvious ones such as quick results and being able to wear lovely clothes (very important!!) there can be enormous benefits to your health as well. Things like high blood pressure – medication may be reduced or even stopped altogether. Type 2 diabetes can often be reversed, cholesterol levels may reduce, sleep apnoea, energy levels and mobility (less strain on joints) are greatly improved. These are just some of the highly researched and well documented physical health improvements that benefit from losing weight. Then there’s the psychological benefits. Depression is often a hidden effect of obesity and can lead to low self-esteem and comfort eating leading to more weight gain. Personalities may change, some become angry (at themselves?) and defensive, others may be secretive and in denial about their problem. All these can affect other areas of life – relationships and even work prospects may be affected. When you choose Cambridge Weight Plan you have the reassurance of knowing there’s 30 years research behind it. You’ll also have the benefit of your own personal consultant who has experienced her own weight loss on the programme, understands how you’ll be feeling and can help you achieve your goal. You’ll get individual support and motivation from accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord (with 6 years’ experience). Contact her on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645 or for more information go to www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL. STOP PRESS! New Mushroom Risotto and Spaghetti Bolognese – real food available now!! Rotary Review CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: At the time of writing the collections have not started but weather permitting we hope to complete the whole programme as set out in the December issue. Full details of results will appear in the February issue. CONGRATULATIONS!!!: For the first time in the history of this club Hadleigh High School became involved in the Rotary Youth National competitions. A team comprising of Isabel Chaplin, Lois Cooper and Laura Flockhart entered the Youth Speaks competition tackling a subject chosen by themselves 'Should voluntary euthanasia be allowed in the UK?'. The area competition took place at Suffolk One college and they were up against strong opposition from another 6 local High Schools. Each school performed well and a number had a star speaker but the girls from Hadleigh all spoke extremely well as a team and we think that this was their strength as they won the heat and now proceed to the District 1080 final which will take place on 14 February 2015 in Kings Lynn. Very well done, Girls and good luck in the next round!! Prior to the area heat the team had been victorious in the first round against three other teams from Hadleigh High and held at the school. This also was closely fought and all teams are to be congratulated especially as the debating society was only formed this term and special thanks must go to Mr Pryke who started the whole thing off. SPEAKERS: there were no speakers as such in this period but the Club entertained two visitors from the Rotary Club of Woy Woy near Sidney, Australia. Both retired they administer a trust fund through Rotary International which provides assistance to third world countries. Amongst many projects, they set up and fund HIV clinics in Africa providing diagnostic equipment and medicines etc. They have recently visited Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda paying a flying visit here on their way home. MEMBERSHIP: the Club has been pleased recently to welcome two new Associate Members - Derek Curtis and Richard Whiting. There are now four associates in total and we hope that there will be more to come in the New Year, especially Ladies. Perhaps you could make a New Year resolution to find out more about Rotary and your local Club. Please visit Rotary Club of Hadleigh website or contact David Stokes tel 01473 827226

...leading the way to active living.

Hadleigh Community Primary News Football Remembers As part of a national initiative, the whole school took part in an act of remembrance on Tuesday 9th December, when we commemorated the Christmas Truce of 1914. The school council gave a speech and a Christmas tree was placed in the middle of the football pitch. Following that, we sang ‘Silent Night’ in English and German. Next, a girl and a boy from each class in KS2 ran onto the field to participate in a short game of football, whilst being cheered on by the rest of the school. Every child in the school had made a poppy to ‘plant’ at the end of the match, making the football pitch a sea of red. Frank Bryant and Lenny Davis from the Hadleigh Branch of the Royal British Legion were there to support us as our “guests of honour”. It was a freezing cold day – perfect because it made it very authentic considering it would have been exceedingly cold in the trenches at the time. However, unlike the troops during World War I, our children were able to enjoy a warming cup of hot chocolate and a mince pie or biscuit, kindly provided by the HSA. We would like to thank everyone for their support, but in particular Miss Cook and Mr Peters for arranging the whole event. Let’s hope the children remember it for many years to come! ‘Open the Tent’ visit Our school hall was transformed into a magical storytellers’ tent as our Reception and KS1 children crept quietly into the darkness and were welcomed by five characters from the Nativity story. Each child got a chance to sit and talk to one of the characters and to hear their part in the Christmas story before the star of Bethlehem shone, telling us it was time to leave. Mary sat in the middle with a beautiful icon picture of her holding a baby, Joseph showed the children his wood carvings, the King welcomed the children into the palace and put sweet smelling myrrh onto their hands, the innkeeper's wife let the children taste dates and oranges from her garden while the shepherd invited us to sit round the fire and told us about seeing bright lights in the sky and hearing angels singing. It was a fantastic experience and a big thank you to our volunteer guests from the "Open the Tent" team who spent the day with our KS1 and Reception children.

Christmas Celebrations throughout the school The whole school has been busy preparing for Christmas. Reception performed ‘Christmas in the Toy Shop’ telling the story of toys in a toy shop getting ready for Christmas and wondering what they could give the baby Jesus. Finally, they realise that everyone has something to give. Year 1 also performed their show, ‘A Snowman at Sunset’. The children worked really hard and the narrators and soloists were really clear. Well done to all of our KS1 children.

In addition to this, KS2 had their annual carol service at St Mary’s Church on 16th December and as well as carols, sang songs from ‘Silent Night’ by Mary Green and Julie Stanley. We chose this story this year as part of our whole school commemoration of the start of World War I, one hundred years ago. This year the seating arrangements in the church had changed and the whole atmosphere felt very homely. We would like to thank all of the parents who attended the service and also to those who gave a donation to ‘The Porch Project’ – our chosen charity for the collection at the end of the service.

Hadleigh Library Friends Group The Library Friends Group held a Christmas raffle during November and into December with plenty of prizes for all ages. We raised over £250 towards developing the library for the community. We would like to thank the following local businesses who, by generously donating prizes, helped to make it such a success, Angel Delights, Bekki Lou's, The Coop, Fergusson's delicatessen, Hadleigh Car Wash, The Hair Lounge, The Idler, Labels to Love, Partridges, Plum Green, Rosebud florists and Threadneedle fabrics.

Towards the Deep End There is a Chinese wish that you should live in interesting times. This is not as well meaning as it sounds. I fear we are in for interesting times as the Accommodation Review options are worked on by the officers of Babergh and Mid Suffolk. The Councillors are not expected to vote on the matter until after the May elections and in the meantime I think that the various interested parties are beavering away to ensure that their views prevail. My own view centres around the economic need for quality jobs in Hadleigh. It also follows that good local jobs will help prevent us from becoming a dormitory for Ipswich. On a happier note every month I have tried to feature a contribution to Hadleigh’s well being from my County Councillor’s Locality Budget. These contributions range for £100 to assist with the Hadleigh Open Gardens Event all the way to £2,000 for Suffolk Mind’s Ecotherapy Allotment Project at the Bridge Street Allotments. Their weekly sessions on the allotment will consist of On the mat with the planning, digging, planting Hadleigh Bowling Club seeds and crops, growing and harvesting as well as DIY and craft skills. It is great for reducing social isolation and for getting support and advice from other group members. The allotment will also give people the chance to learn about gardening and improve their skills which are transferable to other areas of their lives. It all promises to be worthwhile and I shall follow their progress with interest. In the spirit of openness and transparency I’m pleased to report that so far I have contributed or committed £23,527 from my County Councillor’s Locality Budget. What Juicy Got For Christmas.... A story of young love, heartache and finally betrayal Juicy started out her in life as a birthday present for a farmer’s son. At first, life for Juicy was great; lots of attention and plenty of food. As the months passed by, the son’s eye was turned towards a girl in his class at school. Time to look after Juicy became short, just a bucket of feed morning and night, with hardly any time to scratch her back or have some chit chat. Juicy took comfort in food and just ate and ate until she looked more like a hippopotamus than a Suffolk Black pig! At this stage I was asked if I would take the pig and keep it on the farm trail. ‘OK’ I said, ‘but only if she is pregnant’. A young boar was given the job. He tried his best, but by this time Juicy was so huge the poor little chap wasn’t able to oblige. So it was soon after this failed love affair that Juicy came to live at Hollow Trees Farm. If you came on the Farm Trail during the summer, you probably wouldn't have noticed a big old black sow sulking in her little sty. However, a diet of fresh air and exercise was prescribed. By Christmas Juicy was looking quite trim and ready for the next “man” in her life. This time I purchased a prize pig from a fellow farmer. The boar had had plenty of experience and had been saved from the butcher’s knife as my farmer colleague was selling up .Originally; this particular boar had been destined for the abattoir. Juicy is enjoying the company and I believe that love has finally blossomed. So is it happy ever after? No chance! Once the boar has completed his task his journey to the abattoir will be resumed! Happy New Year, Farmer Robert Hollow Trees Farm , Semer, Ipswich IP76HX

Over the last six months we have been fundraising to hopefully enable us to purchase a small mini-bus in 2015, which will enable us to not only take residents out and about on day excursions, but also their visits to hospital or the doctors. It will also be useful when promoting “Coffee Mornings”, “Cake and Bake” days and “Souper Wednesdays”, when we can collect people from the town area, and drop them back after the event. Many of our residents would like to pop into town, visit the library, go for a coffee, purchase a gift for a relative, the list is endless. It means giving them a little more independence, which is very important to them, as I’m sure you’ll agree. We launched the fund-raising at our Biggest Ever Tea Party on June 21st. This was followed with staff being sponsored to walk around Alton Water in July. A Mexican evening meal was attended by many relatives in August, who enjoyed authentic food and wine/beer, and a raffle. The staff paid to attend work in their P.J’s. Also three short brain-teaser quizzes, at £1 per go proved popular. Our Garden Fete was in September, with a Boot Sale later the same month. In October we had a Halloween raffle and staff again paid to dress up in spooky costumes for the day. In the evening, another themed dinner was well attended by friends and relatives, this time Italian food was served. In November we celebrated American Thanksgiving Day, and had several students from Hadleigh High School come in and serve the residents with their Turkey Dinner and Apple Pie dessert, and then sit and have theirs afterwards. The following evening, the Foyer was once more turned into a restaurant area, and thirty people sat down to a Thanksgiving Meal, and raffle. On 7th December we held our Christmas Bazaar in the foyer, and sold many items made by the residents during the previous weeks. These included papercraft notebooks, painted flowerpots complete with compost and bulbs. Christmas door wreaths and beaded bracelets, necklaces and Xmas tree beaded snowflakes. Many donated items sold well too. In the café area, sales of home-made cakes and biscuits, mince pies with Mulled wine, tea or coffee were well received too. Our combined efforts in organising, attending and supporting those events over the last few months, have meant that an amazing amount of money has been raised in a short period of time, £2,250! I’d like to thank everyone who has helped, in raising this amazing amount of money, and hope you will continue giving us your encouragement and support in 2015 so we can reach our target, to purchase a small second-hand mini-bus. I hope you all had a very Happy Christmas, and a peaceful New Year Jill Ready

Mozzarella Snowpeople Hello and a very Happy New Year! This little piece of cuisine art should have been with you in time to furnish the Christmas table. Unfortunately, I was snowed under (no pun intended!) with seasonal activities and missed the deadline. Fortunately, they didn’t melt, and making by Sarah Thompson them in January will help to drive away those winter blues. Ingredients/Equipment Mozzarella (you can get two snowpeople out of a 200g ball); Melon baller, small knife, small spoon. (Don’t worry if you don’t have the first item); Cocktail sticks – helpful but not essential; Peppercorns (for eyes and buttons); Left over fruit and vegetables (Just raid the fridge) Method The method is straightforward but requires some patience. The finished product is well worth the effort. Using a melon baller or small spoon, carve out two small snowball shapes from the mozzarella. Snap a cocktail stick in half, but be careful of the jagged edges. Use one half to spear the two snowballs together. This helps your snowman to balance. If you don’t have any cocktail sticks, just lay the little fella down on a flat surface while you work on his outfit. Carefully place two peppercorns for the eyes, adding extra for the buttons if you like. Using a fruit knife, bring out the creative spirit in you and carve miniature nose, mouth, accessories (scarf and hat) from any colourful fruit. I found small tomatoes and coloured peppers particularly helpful, and made the dearest tiny green scarf by slicing a strip off a bit of leftover cabbage. You could also experiment with herbs or ground spices to create hair and accessories. Go on, enjoy yourself. And don’t forget the BASIL (Buy And Source It Locally)

James Cartlidge writes Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for South Suffolk One of my top new year’s resolutions is for 2015 to be the year that South Suffolk gets connected. We all know the benefits of living in Hadleigh and its surrounding villages – quality of life; genuine community; beautiful scenery. But inevitably, this comes with downsides and foremost among them is surely getting connected – slow broadband for many, and long journeys for commuters. Suffolk County Council has taken a real lead on prioritising better broadband across the county, being the first authority to sign a contract with central Government for better broadband access, targeting 95% coverage by 2017. Of course, if your local exchange has not been connected yet to super-fast fibre optic broadband you will wonder where the good news lies. The answer is that super-fast broadband is coming, village by village. I am aware that parts of Hadleigh have middling broadband access, but the biggest challenge undoubtedly lies in the surrounding villages and this is where Suffolk County Council’s commitment to reaching the more remote areas is so important. After all, a village might be part of an exchange that is fibre-enabled but this will not help households too far away to benefit. So, in conjunction with BT Openreach engineers, Suffolk are trialling innovative approaches to deal with the issue of distance. For example, at Aldham, more than 2km from the Lady Lane exchange, a solution called ‘fibre to remote nodes’ is being trialled, with cabinets on BT posts. This typifies a genuine resolve to carry better broadband to more remote areas. Linking homes to the virtual superhighway is arguably easier than changing the real highway network. If you are commuting by car from Hadleigh or its surrounding villages to any other major commercial centre, wherever you look there are significant and pressing Highways issues. The A12 is a key route and the Autumn Statement brought a welcome promise of significant improvements, including phase 1 of a major upgrade including the addition of a third lane between Chelmsford and Colchester. However, many challenges remain even if this work goes ahead – and much depends on the outcome of a certain event next May, but at least we have concrete plans for improvements to this key road. Then there is the Great Eastern mainline. Whether joining at Ipswich, Colchester, Manningtree or Marks Tey via Sudbury, local rail travel has been a frequently stressful experience of late. Again, the Autumn Statement set out concrete proposals for improvements to the line but it’s quite clear that this is going to be a long drawn-out process and it will be up to local politicians to keep making the case for a share of funding. I for one am committed to arguing that case for South Suffolk. So, improvements may not happen as quickly as passengers deserve, but if change on the tracks and tarmac takes time, at least with better broadband more people who have the option can consider working from home. Let’s hope for better connections in 2015! www.jamescartlidge.com

Hadleigh Orchestra Thank to everybody who supported our Christmas Concert – one of our very best - and thank you for being so enthusiastic. As a result of your generosity, after deduction of expenses, we have been able to send a cheque for £150. to the L’Arche community in Ipswich. They do a wonderful work in creating places of belonging for people with learning disabilities. We were once again most grateful to Father Peter and the Catholic Church for the opportunity giving our concert in St. Jospeh’s. It was Father Peter’s request that instead of making our usual donation to the church we should give it to the L’Arche community. After the Christmas break, rehearsals will being again at Beaumont Community School on Monday Jan. 12th. 7.30 pm - 9.30 pm. If you are interested in joining us, please do give me a ring on (01473) 827242 or Jose on (01473) 741055. If you play a string instrument, you will be very welcome. A thankyou On Saturday 22 November, a team of “hi-vis” volunteers once again appeared in the High Street for the annual job of erecting Christmas trees. The volunteers are often asked who organises and pays for these trees. Each year, Hadleigh Town Council contacts every business/householder in the High Street/Market Place during September/October to enquire whether they wish to purchase a tree. Once the cut-off date for applications is reached the required numbers of trees are ordered from the supplier. On the agreed Saturday, the volunteers meet to trim and shape each tree to fit into the wall brackets, decorate the trees with the Christmas lights and then erect all the trees along the High Street. Xmas Tree Helpers – Sat 22 Nov 2014: Farhad Abdly, Terry Angland, Samuel Cairns, Stuart Cairns, Jason Davies, Andy Forbes, Joey Gilder, Tadeusz Kobiela (Ted the Pole "Tadpole"), Brian Loftus, Sarah Loftus, Rob Lowson, Elaine Root, Glenn Root, John Smyth, Patrick Towles, Judith Townsend. Mike Ager (Kings Head) and Kenny McGhee (Grass to Glass) loaned their ladders. Phil Taylor (Brett Valley Maintenance Services Ltd) for the loan of his truck. Micaela for contacting new and previous helpers. And don't forget ..... what goes up must come down ..... so, if anybody is available on Saturday 10 January to help with taking down the Xmas trees, we would be most grateful for all your help - please meet behind the King's Head at 9.30 am.

SKy Watch Looking in to the past Happy 2015! Another astronomy year is under way and the highlight of the year is not that far off,March in fact when we will see a partial Solar eclipse ,and a substantial amount of the sun will be obscured -75% to be exact, but that is then ,this is now. So,for January this year the highlight of the night sky will be a comet that as I write this, looks set to become visible to the naked eye. This new comet is officially called C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy). This comet has been brightening very rapidly since its discovery on August 17th, 2014. With ultra clear skies you may glimpse this comet with your eye appearing as a white misty looking patch of light very close to the very well known constellation Orion. Sweeping with binoculars, you could take in the comet then move up to the Orion nebula ,located in the sword of the constellation. All this got me thinking about the orbital periods of these comets. C/2014 Q2 has an inbound journey time of some 13,394 years, using the epoch 1950 solution, and an outward journey of 8,000 years using epoch 2050 solution. So, last time that this comet was in the skies of Earth what was mankind up to? Surprisingly, farming wasn't established yet nor breeding of certain animals - 12,000 years ago. Cows were not yet domesticated -10,000 years ago. Wheat was not yet cultivated -9,500 years ago. Sheep domesticated /Rice cultivated/corn cultivated - 9,000 years ago. Chickens domesticated -8,000 years ago. Potatoes and bananas cultivated -7,000 years ago. Horses domesticated - 5,600 years ago. Quite sobering isn't it? These very basics of humanity were not up and running back then ,imagine what the comet will come back to in 8,000 years time! But with astronomy, the truth is we are always looking into the past. Take the star Rigel-the blue giant star that is located at the foot of Orion , and where comet C/2014 Q2 will be passing by this month. This star lies at some 860 light years away, the light hitting your eyes tonight actually left the star in 1154! The middle star of Orions' belt ,Alnilam, lies at a distance of 1,340 light years -the light meeting you tonight began its journey in 674 or around the time of the siege of Constantinople. By stark contrast, our brightest star, Sirius or alpha Canis Majoris, situated very close to Orion is just 8.5 light years away, or the light left the star in around July 2006. Of course the distances to the stars are vast and very hard for us to comprehend but objects in our solar system, albeit at large distances from us, can be measured in light time. Lets do an easy one, Sun - Earth; all we need to know to solve this is our mean separation distance (93,000,000 miles), and then the speed of light, (186,000 miles per second). Then divide the two, this gives an answer of 500. That's the time it takes for light to reach us from the Sun in seconds, of course division of 60 by 500 gives you the light time in minutes, 8. . Now Neptune on the other hand lies at a huge 30 AU from the Sun or 2,790,000,000 miles. We can either pull our hair out, get an abacus or hire a super computer or simply remember that for 1 astronomical unit of space, light takes 8.3 minutes to traverse it. So very quickly and easily Neptune being at 30 AU is 30 x 8.3 = 249 minutes or by dividing by 60 would give you 4.15 hours. Amazing isn't it? That's the wonder of the Universe. If you have any questions regarding anything astronomical please do contact me at; neilnorman-72@hotmail.co.uk. Until next month, clear skies! Neil Norman.

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Battle of the Bands Battle of the bands is always an exciting event. It’s a time for Houses to get together and for different years to work together as a team. Lots of popular songs were performed such as Rather Be by Clean Bandit and Ghost by Ella Henderson. Teachers and students alike came together to create an event that was described as highly enjoyable and everybody thought that it was a good show. First place went to Guthrum with Duncan runners up and Morris in third. Toppesfield, Oswald and Ansell missed getting on the podium but still gave a very good show. Christmas Extravaganza! This year’s Christmas concert included a magical mix of high quality drama fused with a fine selection of pop hits from the majestic Soul Band, virtuous duos and solo performances. The drama featured an abridged version of Charles Dickens’ classic a ‘Christmas Carol’ interspersed with a hilarious twist on the ‘twelve days of Christmas’. The fantastic flute choir played beautifully as usual. The show also included many choral arrangements with some perennial Christmas favourites. This was a fabulous opportunity for students to show case their talents. Miss Macey said, ‘the school is trying something new; we are revolutionising the Christmas concert!’ She felt it would ‘kick-start’ everyone’s Christmas. It was also the last opportunity for our Year 11 students to display their talent, which they did brilliantly. All agreed this new format was a great success. Language Assistants Hadleigh High School is very lucky to have a French and a German assistant. They are foreign students who are here to help students learn languages and also to teach them about French and German culture. They want to be teachers and have come to gain experience and to improve their English skills. Pupil leadership Recently our school has been preparing for a new group of pupil leaders such as the house prefects and the sports prefects. Every year a new group of budding young leaders go through the Hadleigh High School leadership programme which is carefully led by Mrs Calvino. The Year 10 students are preparing for the new prefect roles in the New Year, there are 2 Head Boys, Andrew Halls and Matthew Smith, and 2 Head Girls, Ellena Cook and Jessica Simmons. There are other roles as well such as: Prefect Leader and Prefect. There are 18 Prefects and 8 Prefect Leaders. Every one of the Prefects and Prefect Leaders will be working closely with the Head Boys and Head Girls to improve the school. The new Year 9 prefects are taking over the roles of the now Year 10 prefects. They are keen to get started on their new duties and make a difference to the school. We spoke to Oscar Farrow (Sports Prefect) who said that he is going to encourage the all the years to participate in more sports around school. His is also aiming to get the participation of inter-form competitions up to a record high. Science club Pupils in Years 5 and 6 from the Hadleigh school pyramid were invited to take part in an after-school Science Club at Hadleigh High School, run by Mrs King. She said that it was a great success. There were places for 30 students and 80 applied! ‘Wear a woolly day’ to Support Save the Children On Friday 12th December, students were invited to wear a woolly jumper in place of the usual compulsory school sweatshirt. In order to do this they had to pay a fee of £1. The money would then go to a charity as chosen by the form 7O. Year 7 decided the event would be held in aid of Save the Children. The year council assisted with collecting money. The Year 7 head of year, Miss Clarke, said ‘It was a fun day enjoyed by all!’ There were some wonderful and unique jumpers worn by both students and staff. South Suffolk Badminton Champions Over the past four weeks Hadleigh High School have been competing in the South Suffolk Badminton League. As one of the smallest schools to enter the league and for the first time Hadleigh students showed their wealth of skill and determination by entering more teams into the leagues than anyone else. In the U14 boys’ league students from Hadleigh High's Y7 and Y8 competed 30

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

against students from Y9 with both our A and B team picking up excellent wins, but just finishing outside of the qualification zone for the county finals. Our U14 girls’ teams again made from younger students in Y8 battled fearless against bigger and older opposition. Our B team finished third in their league of 7 teams and just missed out on a semi-final place. While our A team proved to be too strong for many teams they did pick up a single loss placing them second in their league but a semi-final place was achieved. The girls battled hard in their semi-final against EBHS who are favourites to win the county cup. The U16 boys’ league was played over two nights because of the huge number of schools involved. The teams where split into three pools of 8 teams with the top two teams from each pool progressing to a finals night where the top six teams would play each other for the right to be crowned South Suffolk Champions and for the top two teams a place in the Suffolk Finals League. The A team on the opening night won all but one game (Claydon High School). A twist came later with the Claydon losing to East Bergholt. This created a three way tie settled on count back for the top two spots and a place in finals night. Hadleigh, to the boys delight, did on count back to the pool because they won more individual games. This turned our attention to our B team of Ezra Magante, Aaron Tampion (doubles), Jay Collis and Kieran Cloud. They battled through their matches winning 2-1 against most opposition they came across. A single loss in their league meant they qualified for the finals night, securing Hadleigh High with the only school to have two teams in the finals. The finals night came around fast and the boys from both teams had put in a few extra training sessions to ensure they performed to their true potential. The opening game was Hadleigh B vs Westbourne and an injury to Jay Collis dampened their chance of victory. Westbourne proved too strong and won the open game 2-1. Our A team, Will Daley, Kyle Leeks, Callum Morrin (captain) and Olly Peters proved too strong for all other schools winning 11 of the 12 sets they played. Whilst the A team cut through the opposition like a warm knife through butter, the B team had matches to play. The A team were crowned champions and will now compete for the Suffolk title after the Holidays. Captain Callum Morrin said with a tear in his eye "this has been one of our greatest sporting achievements for our year group and my friends. I cannot wait for the county finals and a bigger challenge". ‘Youth Speaks’, a roaring success Youth Speaks, a competition involving public speaking, has been extremely successful for our school’s competitors. Three students from Hadleigh High School, Lois Cooper, Laura Flockhart and Isabel Chaplin made it through to the next round in this iconic competition. Mr Pryke and Miss Hutchinson, both English teachers, took the three students to Suffolk One on December 2nd, where they delivered a speech on Euthanasia. They were in competition with all other schools in the area. They managed to beat all of these, including Ipswich High School and the Royal Hospital School. Next they will go on to compete in King’s Lynn in February. Year 8 Christmas Parcel Exchange In our German lesson, we received a parcel from a school in Pocking, Germany. It was a very exciting experience. They were students of the same age, and inside the parcel they placed many different varieties of food that they eat around Christmas. They handmade Christmas cards with messages that we could translate. They also gave us a CD with sons. The tunes of the songs have a similar tune to the songs we know. Overall, it was an exciting and wonderful parcel, which obviously had a lot of effort put into making it. I hope they like our parcel as much as we liked theirs (written by Isla RomerLee and Holley Grimsey 8Y1 German) We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers the Very Best for 2015 from all the staff, governors, and all the pupils of Hadleigh High School.

2015 – The year of the sheep is just beginning! Hadleigh has a fun packed programme of events. Contributions are being made by many different organisations and businesses. Expect to see some extraordinary sheep around the town. The programme below has some important dates for events but you can be sure there will be other interesting happenings and additions along the way. It’s also not too late to get involved in the Woolly Workshops, making Sheep Bunting. These friendly get togethers at the Hadleigh Pool & Leisure will start on 18th January from 10.30 to 12.30 and then every third Sunday of the month up to and including April. News from The Station May I start by wishing you all a very Happy New Year from all of us based at Hadleigh, and we hope that you enjoyed your Christmas and New Year celebrations. I would like to start with news that unfortunately Babergh East SNT and Hadleigh has lost, for a short time, PC Matt Paisley. He has been appointed Temporary Sergeant at Sudbury and Gt Cornard SNT and will be based at Sudbury Police Station. This is excellent news for Matt and we wish him well with this promotion, but we will see him return in 3 months. However, we would like to introduce PC 1499 Matt Thomas who has stepped into the Babergh East SNT role for 3 months. Matt has been stationed at Hadleigh for several months as a response officer so knows the area well, but is looking forward to meeting the community and being the new ‘officer on the beat’. The topic/issue that I always hear when I patrol in the town is parking. As you are all aware, officers from Hadleigh Police Station regularly patrol the High Street and roads/estates around our local primary schools. We regularly issue Fixed Penalty Notices for £30.00 contravening both single and double yellow lines. Just to re-iterate – SINGLE YELLOW LINES – NO PARKING MONDAY TO SATURDAY 8AM-6PM – DOUBLE YELLOW LINES – NO PARKING AT ANY TIME. We also have issues with Disabled Bay parking in certain areas of the High Street, which are restricted by time and displaying a disabled badge. Fixed penalty notices for £30.00 are issued where badges are not displayed. Likewise, we also have Limited Waiting Bays in parts of the High Street. These are timed and allow parking for ONE HOUR and NO RETURN WITHIN 2 HOURS. It has come to our attention that several cars remain parked in these bays all day, which has a knock on effect of shoppers not being able to access businesses in the High Street. We will be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices £30.00 for these bays, so would urge everyone to consider the FREE car parks in the town whilst you visit and do your shopping. The areas / roads around our primary schools always experience parking problems. Again we have contacted the schools to remind parents to park wisely and legally as officers will be patrolling regularly and tickets will be issued. I am sure you are all thinking that “do we not have anything better to do with our time”, Yes we do, but our time is led by issues raised in the community and parking remains the number one problem for most residents of Hadleigh. Finally, I would like to extend my welcome, to all readers of the Community News and residents of Hadleigh, to contact us, Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team, at either the Police Station or by email babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk or call 101, We are here to police your town. Thank you for reading. Until next time, Julia Bignell, PCSO 3173, Hadleigh Police Station

GREAT WAR NEWS FROM 1914 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Tues 12th Jan A non-commissioned officer from Hadleigh (the newspaper does not reveal his identity) has just done a long spell in the trenches: “we were over knee deep in mud and came out plastered all over, to say nothing of the attacks of the wily foe. I am glad of rest and truly grateful to be in a sound condition”. He goes on to make a recruitment appeal. “We want more men. How we managed to keep back the Germans I don’t know. There seem to be no end to them. They were shot down as fast as they appeared, but still they came on. We need more men to bring this war to a close and want them at once”. He reasons this to avoid the “barbarity and wanton destruction” getting to England. He does express confidence that “right will triumph in the end”. Wed 13th Jan A letter is reported from Sergeant Robert G Ward (2nd Grenadier Guards) where he talks of “facing a relentless foe – an enemy which we know perfectly well is there for our destruction”. He tells of his job as a limber sergeant, with work consisting of doing repairs to the guns and looking after the ammunition. This job is outside the trenches, but others in his battalion have to contend with deep water in much of the trenches. Wed 20th Jan Private Alfred Oxford of 1st Bedfords is granted a further 10 days leave having been wounded at Bethane in northern France and having been in five hospitals. Private Fred Willis of the Royal Field Artillery is at home, he “saved the lives of nine men (when) he picked up a shell and whilst in the act of throwing it away it burst and injured his hands and leg”. Private ‘Friendly’ Betts of 2nd Royal Sussex is in hospital at Oxford; two and half inches of bone and four bullets having to be removed from his left arm. Private Jesse Shepherd of 1st Bedfords is at home due to have an operation to his right hand.

Panto returns to Hadleigh, Oh yes it does.... I caught up with the Prince and his servants Chas and Dave who were in the Eight Bells having a drink and asked them. So Prince you have lots of money, why don't you have a girlfriend already? Prince: Well this is why I'm holding a ball at the Town Hall to find someone. Chas: He's been on Match.com for years but i dont think the profile picture helps. Dave: Maybe hes after too much from a lady, on his profile it says 'must like to do housework'. Chas & Dave - why do you like working for the prince? Chas: Well its gotta be better than working in the council. Dave: Oh I do like that idea, sounds like easy money to me. Prince: Please don't leave me lads, I need you to help me get ready for my ball in January. What do you like to get up to on your days off? Chas: I love a walk down the railway walk to relax and meet new people on the way. Dave: Yes, I'm looking for a new girlfriend too but all I meet along the railway walk is dogs. Prince: Oh shut up you too, sorry we can't keep waffling on about this we have things to do. The Panto is on the 15th, 16th and 17th of January 2015 at 7:30pm with a matinee performance on 17th at 2pm. The panto is being held at St Marys church, which is being transformed into a performance area and is a show NOT to be missed. Adult tickets are £5 each and Children £3.50, and are available to buy from Keith Avis newsagents on the High St, Hadleigh. During the show the Porch Project will be holding a raffle to raise money for its funding. St Marys Church wants to start using its building for more community projects so this is the ideal chance for the building to be used for such an event. On the 12th December HADS held a talent show called Hadleighs Got Talent. Ours winners will be performing at the Saturday performance of the panto. Callum Lloyd is performing at the 2pm show on the Saturday and Megs Martin is performing at the 7:30pm show. Congratulations to the winners and also all who took part in the show, we look forward to seeing our winners performing at the show. Happy New Year to one and all, hope you see you at one of Hadleighs BIGGEST and BRIGHTEST shows EVER. www.hads.moonfruit.com

4 LIFE LANDSCAPES

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts Gardens have Boundaries. Boundaries are important. When I was growing up the boundaries between my house and the neighbours was a 3 foot brick wall. For our first house in 1962 the side boundaries were a three foot post and wire fence. Our second house in 1967 was the same, as was our third house in Hadleigh in 1976 except that this had chain link as well as wires. I recently walked around Hadleigh's two newest estates making some deliveries, and two things amazed me. The first was how clever the architects had been at maximising the number of houses on the site, and the second was how much six foot interwoven fencing was on view. To some extent the two things go together. The layout of the neighbouring houses meant that even with low fences you could not see into the neighbouring houses. People were quite happy to see their neighbours tending and enjoying their gardens. In my Hadleigh garden I have 3 boundaries with neighbours. One supplemented the original fence with a conifer hedge, one made the boundary for which they are responsible six foot interwoven on metal posts. I planted a mixed shrub hedge along the boundary for which I was responsible. The neighbour clearly did not think this gave them enough privacy, so Lawsons cypress was added on their side. This has since been removed. On the new estates I suspect that the interwoven is there to stay. To go to an alternative would require neighbours to agree, and planting your own hedge inside the interwoven would mean surrendering at least two feet of garden. My older hedges are at least four feet thick. The birds love these and nest in them. I hope that you can prove me wrong, but I suspect that blackbirds struggle to find nest sites on the new estates. The mixed shrub hedge that I mentioned above contained two varieties of forsythia, a couple of pyracantha, a berberis darwinii, and a variegated holly. The holly was allowed to grow into a specimen tree and is now after about 37 years about 20 feet tall. The others are pruned reasonably regularly, This year the pyracantha grew ten feet in a year, and has left me with a massive pruning job, which was what started me thinking about boundaries in the first place. Weather Records In November at Kersey there was 87.1 mm (3.4") of rain, which is 70% more than our average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of November was 206.3 mm (8.1") which is well above the average figure. In November the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (68F) which is a bit lower than average, and the minimum temperature was 0 Cel (32F) which is about average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 7 Cel (45F), which is typical. Amazingly this year I did not start lifting dahlias until December 12. Hints The garden will generally look after itself in January, but if one has a nice dry day and the garden is not frozen solid or covered in snow one should think about :(a) Any Hard Landscaping that you want to do. If you get it done now, then you can enjoy it in the Summer. (b) Clear up any dead plants from the summer (preferably to a compost heap), and clean garden paths that are slippery due to fallen leaves and algae. Wash up empty pots and clean glass in greenhouse or cold frame. (c) Prune fruit trees (NOT plum), and late flowering summer shrubs (NOT the early ones like Forsythia and Kerria, or you will lose the flowers.) (d) Providing we do not get too much rain overhaul flower beds containing perennials. Wishing you all a good gardening year, John Rye

Hadleigh & District Garden Club On 10th November we were offered a "Journey to Paradise" which turned out to be a riveting talk with a continuous picture parade of New Zealand, in all its botanical, zoological and scenic glory. Of course we all appreciate that the exotica available from florists shops and garden centres, come from places where they grow wild and I admit to being absolutely astonished by the vast areas of Anthurium Andreanum on one of our travels; of course foreigners are equally overcome by British woods carpeted in Bluebells. Dudley Chignall and his wife embarked on an extended holiday travelling the length and breadth of the two islands, taking time to enjoy the wonderful scenery via the most empty roads and photographing everything of interest as they went. The scenery changes dramatically from the earthquake zone in the North of North Island, to the mountainous alpine area in South Island, Sadly the wonderful views of Mount Cook, reminded me that one of my cousins is still entombed, with his climbing companion somewhere in a glacier on the mountain. All in all a talk full of interest from so many points of view, from plants to scenery and the still unspoilt social situation that exists there, perhaps it's because sheep out-number humans many times over! Letter www.layham.org from Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed during the meeting of 26th November 2014 were: • Babergh District Council report The Chairman had received a letter from Cllr Sue Wigglesworth saying she did not plan to stand for re-election in 2015, after 24 years. On behalf of the Parish Council, he thanked her for her interest and support over all those years. • Suffolk County Council report Cllr Gordon Jones said there would be a meeting during the first week of December concerning the A12 resurfacing work to be carried out in the New Year. Cllr Jones said he would be raising some other issues concerning the A12, particularly in the Stratford St Mary area where minor accidents appeared to be causing the road to be closed for hours at a time. It was noted that the Highways Agency would become a separate company from April 2015. Suffolk County Council’s budget would go to full Council in February; there would be no increase in Council Tax, although savings of around £40m would still have to be made. With regard to the consultation on the future of Children’s Centres in Suffolk, Cllr Jones stressed that services were not being closed; currently the service operated for 14.5 hours at the Corn Exchange in Hadleigh and it was likely to transfer to the Leisure Centre for 2.5 days per week; there would be storage facilities available, and clear signage, although the Children’s Centre would not have a dedicated room. The facility at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre would not be staffed all the time – the Children’s Centre in East Bergholt would be a ‘hub’ with staff visiting Hadleigh as required • Defibrillators The Clerk confirmed that the defibrillator to be located in the telephone box in Lower Layham had been ordered. It was proposed that the money raised from recycling credits – approximately £450 for the current year - should be put towards this project; this proposal was accepted. However, other funding sources, including grants, would be researched. • Budget & Precept for 2015/16 It was agreed not to increase the precept for 2015/16. A budget summary would be presented to the 2015 Annual Parish Meeting, including a summary of what the Parish Council had achieved during the last four years. • Speeding JC had submitted an online request for information on accidents in the Benton Street / Upper Layham area and had received a brief response stating that there had been 13 accidents reported to Suffolk Constabulary since 2008; she would request further information. • Allotments The Clerk would update Layham’s standard agreement before the annual renewals in April 2015. There was still one outstanding invoice relating to the water supply and JC was chasing payment; it was agreed that a clause should be included in the standard agreement stating a time limit for payment of invoices. • Planning With regard to the application for the erection of a first floor extension on Pipkin House, councillors felt the information provided (in particular, the quality of the drawings), made it difficult to make a judgement. However, they were concerned about the visual impact of the proposed extension and the unorthodox roof line. Marriages in Layham Church An ongoing project for the Layham Archive is to try to obtain photographs to pair-up with the Parish Marriage Register. Eventually, an exhibition could be mounted in the church. Several new photographs have been obtained recently courtesy of Dennis Gleed, Ann Miller and James Bryce. Dennis’s marriage to Doreen Ford in 1957 is shown here. A fascinating picture of Richard Bennett and his bride Rosalie Hollick was taken on their wedding day - 20 February 1919. A few months ago, Letter from Layham featured the Layham Scout troop – now we have a photograph of the scout leader. His position was clearly important to him. Rosalie was in service at Mason’s Bridge (now renamed Layham Hall) and Richard was the projectionist at the Hadleigh Cinema. If you were married in St Andrew’s Church, Layham and you are prepared to share your wedding photograph, or that of a relative, please contact Michael Woods on 01473 823798 or at michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net Thank you Layham Playing Field Thank you all subscribers – we have a sell out for the 100 Club. Thank-you Bryan for your generous help. Let’s hope a smile will work wonders Barn Owls in Layham The Parish Council made application early in 2014 for an owl nest box to be placed in the village. A suitable site was found and Suffolk Wildlife Trust arranged for delivery and erection of a box. In its very first season a pair of Barn Owls made it home and raised six young. SWT volunteers came to Layham and ringed the six chicks. We A parent bird with prey don’t know how many of the six survived but some certainly did. The first picture shows the ringing of one of the chicks and the second shows an adult bird returning from a hunting expedition with some fresh food. Thank you to Doreen Sillett for the photographs. We now wait to see if members of the family use the box again in 2015. Adults have been seen hunting along the river throughout the winter so chances are good. A parent bird with prey

NOW YOU SEE ME (12) An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money !. Here is a not too demanding film to launch 2015- entertaining but nothing to tax your senses. Four members who are called the Four Horsemen, stage impressive illusions during their Las Vegas shows, but climax each with an actual bank robbery ! In finding out how the film solves the links between the Las Vegas shows and the robberies you are reminded of a great truth in this puzzle – the closer you look, the less you see !

Friday 23rd January at 7.30 pm

BELLE (12) It has been some while since we have presented a costume drama and BELLE is a romantic melodrama with teeth- the story of an African the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy captain, raised at Kenwood House in London where she became companion to her half cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray. The film's story is intriguing and is teased out from studying a portrait found hanging in Scone Palace, Perthshire .During her childhood Belle is happy to play with her half cousin Lady Elizabeth – but on reaching her teens she realises her illegitimate birth is either a scandal or the colour of her skin is a curiosity ! The film's background is steeped in history and in particular the Slave Trade- so little has been written about these events. And whilst this film can never correct the past, it can reshape our perceptions ! BELLE is a film that commands your respect starring Gugu MbathaRaw in the title role supported by Tom Wilkinson as Lord Mansfield.

February 8th 2015 3pm, St Mary’s Church Hadleigh On February 9th 1555, Rowland Taylor, Rector of Hadleigh, was burnt at the stake on Aldham Common. Aldham Common was enclosed in 1729 with the income to be used for the ‘poor of Hadleigh’. Today the Aldham Common Charity administers the land and the money raised is distributed in grants. All change at Aldham Common Charity After 17 years, Mrs Margaret Quinlan is stepping down as Clerk to the Aldham Common Charity. She said, “I’ve enjoyed my time as Clerk but wanting to spend more time with my grandchildren has meant that I felt that I should stand down” Penny Cook, Chairman of the Charity, commented that members were very grateful for the time and effort Mrs Quinlan had put in and felt that her local knowledge had been invaluable. The new Clerk is to be Mrs Jenny Frost who can be contacted on 07762722119 or on email at aldhamcommoncharity@hotmail.co.uk and she said, “I’m very honoured to be asked to take on this role as the Charity does such good work. It’s not just helping students with textbooks or school uniform but Aldham Common is one of the few charities in Hadleigh which also helps adults. It must be better if there’s a family crisis to ask the Charity for a grant rather than use one of the payday loan companies which charge such exorbitant interest rates.” One of Mrs Frost’s first jobs will be to help organise the church service to commemorate the 460th anniversary of Rowland Taylor’s death at Aldham Common. The 3pm service will be at St Mary’s on February 8th and all are welcome to attend.

Let’s save the hanging baskets! Hello Hadleigh! Do you like the hanging baskets that go up in the high street every year? Would you like them again in 2015? We thought they were lovely in 2014 but to have them next year, we need your help. Hadleigh is a fantastic town with a wonderful high street and buzzing community life. The baskets show that we are a vibrant community; that we are proud of our town and all that goes on in it. But each year we have to raise about ÂŁ7,000 to plant and maintain the baskets. This is not financed by the councils. Hadleigh Town Council contributes like other traders and residents. This is a big financial endeavour and we need to know if people in Hadleigh want to continue having summer flowers. If the answer is ‘yes’ then we can all club together, like the amazing community we are, and pay for them in the most efficient way possible. Of course, you’ll be aware the baskets can only go on some buildings - some of our most historic buildings can’t take the weight. But we all contribute to the whole high street scheme which benefits everybody, even if you can’t have one by your own door. Sadly, there is another problem. Since Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce has become dormant, it can’t cover insurance for the scheme. We hope Hadleigh Town Council will step into the breach, or Babergh District Council, especially as we’ve heard they won’t be planting the town’s flower beds next year. Without the baskets, there’ll be no flowers at all! So, while we sort out the insurance, we’d like to know what you think. Do you want the baskets? Can you help to pay for them? We can’t go ahead without your support, and we need this by the end of January, when we commission our plant suppliers. Please give us your views on the form below. Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United’s hopes of a long run in this season’s F.A Vase competition was ended at the first hurdle. The team travelled up to Great Yarmounth in a confident frame of mind but a defeat by two goals to nil put paid to emulating the previous couple of years when we have reached the closing stages. Yarmouth play in a lower league than Hadleigh but the Norfolk team were deserving winners. In recent league games form was patchy but a great performance at Haverhill earned a two goal win on a cold afternoon. Six goals were shared in an exciting match against Ely City at the Millfield. The Reserves reached the semi-finals of the Suffolk Cup with a win at Wenhaston in a penalty shoot out. The match was goalless but the end result was a fitting reward for a young team. Details of the semi-final will be on the club website. In league matches the Reserves lost twice against Witham by big scores and narrowly at Brantham where goals from Harry Eavans and Sam Sharp were not quite enough to equal Brantham’s three. The Thurlow Nunn Youth Team have had several matches postponed because of waterlogged pitches. But they did well to only lose by two goals to one at Witham with Oliver Peters scoring for us. Congratulations to Dan Knight and Tyler French for their selection for Suffolk Youths. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Ashley Sloots and Bob Fletcher. The Ground Improvement Draw was won by Hadleigh Thrift Shop. Terry Adams

Praise for Dynamic Newton Green The dynamism of Newton Green Golf Club has been praised by a top golfing official. Suffolk Golf Union president Ron Kent has highlighted the club’s go-ahead policies as the sport faces challenges linked to the recession and other factors. He was speaking at a reception staged at the club to mark Newton winning the Suffolk Hambro veterans Alan Vince, Hambro Cup for the first time in Bobby Ablitt and Phil Eaves 42 years. Mr Kent commented: “This club has become a byword for its enterprise and tackling issues facing the game. Progressive policies in relation to membership, junior golf, the course and other areas have all helped to put it in the good position it has now finds itself.” He was among guests at the evening that included county vice present Phil Platten, who had handed Newton the trophy at Woodbridge when they defeated Ipswich in the final. The evening was hosted by club men’s captain Andrew Johnson, who also introduced veteran former Hambro players Bobby Ablitt, Phil Eaves and Officials and players Alan Vince (the former two being members of the 1972 winning side). The captain said in addition to the lifting of the Hambro trophy, there had been other success at county level with Eloise Aldous winning the Suffolk girls’ junior championship; Alice Barlow girls’ junior match play runner-up; Max Hemson, Jed Seeley and Connor Talbot winners of the junior team shield; Emily Penfold taking the county ladies silver spoon; and Patricia Havers and Jennie Leech winning the county centenary foursomes.

Hadleigh Hares Cross Country - Harwich A total of 16 Hadleigh Hares toughed it out on the unforgiving Harwich Cross Country course consisting of windswept muddy fields and ice cold puddles. We had some great performances including stunning debut runs from James McNally and Davina Greenwell. Jasmine Hayward produced another strong run to finish in the top 5 with Vic Kenny just behind and backed up by Debs Stewart (3rd V55). Elisa Bostock finished in 2nd position which is the highest finish by a female Hare at these events for some years. The boys also topped their group with 4 finishing in the top 20 and overall Hadleigh extend their lead at the top of Pool B by 3 points. The ‘Performance of the day’ award went to Elisa Bostock for her excellent placing and finishing top female Hadleigh Hare. Only 3 Junior Hares were brave enough to tackle the tough Harwich course, congratulations to Elizabeth Stewart, Freddie Ashmore & Ella Bodsworth. Results: Ladies 2nd Elisa Bostock, 4th Davina Greenwell, 5th Jasmine Hayward, 6th Victoria Kenny, 77th Deborah Stewart Men: 3rd James McNally, 12th John Scaife, 16th David Willer, 17th Danny Preece, 41st Leon Hayward, 44th Mat Blacoe, 54th Paul Gardiner, 113th Steve Hunt, 139th Paul McAllister, 150th Andrew Stewart, 155th Mike Rosbrook
