Push to sign up new cyclists in Hadleigh Hadleigh Cycling Club, now in its 5th year, has plans to encourage more people in the town to get on their bikes in 2016. Last year, the Club organised the town’s first sportive, ran one of the most successful Junior Clubs in Suffolk, promoted dozens of social rides, supported a group of riders who rode from London to Paris in 24 hours and raised over £7000 for the Brendan Oakes Trust. The Club will be holding a Subs night on Friday 5th February, 8pm onwards at The George (upstairs functions room). The membership fees are £10 for an individual and £30 for a family. For those who cannot attend, details of the Club can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.org. Adam Chamberlin, the Chairman, said, “The Club is here to ensure that cycling is kept alive within the community and we welcome anyone that wishes to join or ride with us”. “We would like to see more girls and women taking part in the Club in 2016. And we are working with the town’s schools to encourage children to take up cycling.” Adam added, “We’ve got nearly 100 members and we hope that new and existing members can pop along to meet with the committee over a drink and find out what’s on for the season”. The Junior Club will re-start on Wednesday, 24th February, 6pm at the High School.

Adult and Junior Club members have been very active in the regional mountain bike Mud Sweat and Gears series, with Alex Cutmore and Lissa Laflin winning the U9 championship titles in 2014 and 2015. This year, Round 1 will be held for the first time at Hintlesham on Sunday 6th March. It is expected that 350 riders will attend. More details of the Club and planned events can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.org or www.facebook.com/HadleighCyclingClub

James Hedington MARLA MAPIP James has been working for Bychoice for over 2 years & in this time has become an integral part of the lettings & management team. Based in the Hadleigh office, he is responsible for the day to day running of this busy department. To ensure the highest levels of service, James is a qualified member of ‘The Association of Residential Letting Agents’ (ARLA) & has also recently completed his exams under the ‘Association of Property Inventory Providers’ (APIP). “Attention to detail is essential & that was the driving force behind the decision to become qualified. Tenants & landlords want to feel confident they’re dealing with a professional & proficient individual. I believe gaining these qualifications has helped support me in every aspect of the business” Owning a rental property can be a full time job in itself & here at Bychoice we know that only too well. We don’t just match a tenant to a property. From helping ingoing tenants contact utility suppliers to liaising with local contractors during maintenance work; there is always something to do. “No two weeks are the same & I enjoy the challenges every day brings. Working towards happy tenants & content landlords keeps me focused” If you would like to discuss any aspect of lettings & management please feel free to visit James at our Hadleigh branch or call any time.

The Hadleigh Ram takes on World Record Quiz Attempt Organised by PubAid, the World’s Biggest Quiz takes place on Sunday 7 February at 7.30pm where thousands of pub quiz goers across the country will be simultaneously answering the same questions in an attempt to create a new Guinness World Record. All restaurants and pubs taking part will be fundraising for good causes, and the Hadleigh Ram is no exception, with plans to support charity Macmillan Cancer Support during the event. Lorna Pissarro runs the Hadleigh Ram with her family. She said: “Being part of something so big it could break a world record is really quite something and we are all very excited about taking part. It is the perfect opportunity to have some fun, enjoy some great food and raise money for a very important cause. The Hadleigh Ram's quiz will be hosted by regular quizmaster Mark Mason and a three course dinner will be served during the event. Tickets cost £25 per person. There will also be a raffle to help raise money for Macmillan, a cause regularly supported by Lorna and her family, who also run the Long Melford Swan and the Lavenham Greyhound. Formed in 2009, PubAid is a volunteer working party dedicated to celebrating the great work done by UK pubs for charity. To book a place, call the Hadleigh Ram on 01473 822880, or for more information visit www.thehadleighram.co.uk/news/world-s-largest-quiz.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard behind the Wheel Hello my dear Readers – thank you all for enquiring as to how my mother Brenda is coming along after fracturing her hip. Upon our return from New York, my mother had a spell in Ipswich Hospital and she came back from a convalescent home in Woodbridge on Christmas Eve. I am pleased to say that she is getting stronger. The picture shows me behind the wheel and as with all classic car buffs, I am looking forward to the Spring weather in order to take to the highways. Frank my chauffeur had the engine purring for a motor from Hadleigh traversing the A120 to Great Dunmow to visit P & A Wood, Rolls-Royce distributors and workshops. If you are remotely interested in cars, the Showrooms are really worthy of a visit with beautiful vehicles and other exhibits. There is also a shop. We then cantered on to Kelvedon and broke our journey at The Western Arms Silver End CM8 3SD. This pub/restaurant had recently been acquired by the owners and was well presented with courteous service and good food at very reasonable prices. They even had somewhere for Frank to eat. If you are out on a run why not pay them a visit. Peering through the haze of the misted windows of the Gibbons’ residence on these cold days, one will find my housekeeper Maria and Frank dealing with domestic duties and warming themselves over the AGA. I’ve recently agreed to dispense with the services of the twin-tub washing machine – its belt had gone to ribbons. We now have an automatic model which washes, rinses and spins. Frank has been in the kitchen garden forking in some organic matter and he’s popped his aubergines under glass. What a life we have in the Country. I have mentioned to you on various occasions the merits of entering a Lasting Power of Attorney. An ordinary Power of Attorney can be granted under the Powers of Attorney Act 1971 in about two lines. That though will not outlive the mental incapacity of the person granting it and hence the special regime of the Lasting Power of Attorney which does just that. You can enable someone else to run all your affairs on your behalf even after you have lost mental capacity. That is known as a Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney There is a similar arrangement for health decisions called a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney. We are busy as always dealing with property matters for our clients not only locally but in London too. I think that it is important that for legal matters you should be able to visit your lawyer – something that is not possible with on-line outfits. Stay local and give us a call. Howard Gibbons

Thank You, Truly, Hadleigh, Deeply. When I first came up with the idea of providing lunch and entertainment on Christmas Day for people who would otherwise be on their own, it never occurred to me that I would receive so much support and kindness from the good people of Hadleigh, although Simon and I both consider this to be our home now, such is the friendliness of the community. Never in my wildest dreams did I consider it possible to transform the Ansell Centre from a big bland hall into a magical winter wonderland, but it happened in the twinkling of Santa’s eye thanks to a small but mighty army of elves. A measure of the event’s success can be found in the letters and cards expressing thanks coming in left, right and centre. There was one complaint, however, and that was that nobody got a cup of tea to go with their mince pies. That’s possibly because the two lovely wine waitresses, Holly and Ivy (not their real names) were busy filling up glasses with a more alcoholic beverage! However, I felt like the conductor of an orchestra on the day, somewhat fraudulent in as much as I may have waved my arms around a lot, but it was the musicians who were doing all the hard work! I am exceedingly grateful to the guests who turned up for making the event so worthwhile. In addition, my heartfelt and deeply sincere thanks go to the small but perfectly formed army of volunteers who gave up their Christmas Eve and or Christmas Day to make this all happen. And finally, to the incredibly generous donations we received from businesses and individuals from Hadleigh and the surrounding area, without which we could not have run the event. Would I do it again at the end of this year? In a heartbeat – but this time, dear guests, you might even get a cup of tea! We are hosting a drinks and nibbles evening at The George pub, Hadleigh, for all those who volunteered or donated goods or money to support the event. This will take place in the room upstairs at The George on Friday 19th February starting at 7.30pm. No agenda or planning for next time (!) just our way of saying thank you for all your hard work and generosity. We couldn’t have done it without you. Sarah and Simon Thompson – 01473 829246 or sarahtooley10@hotmail.com. Thanks in no particular order for their contributions to the Christmas Day meal to: Ipswich Building Society, Kelvin Avis and team, Hadleigh Town Council, Aldham Common Charity, Tatty Broyds, Thrift Shop, Fidelis, Veterinary practice, Hadleigh Community Choir, Morton Smith and Girling, EACH, Hollow Trees Farm, Smugglers Catering, The Cooking Experience, The George, and the Mobility shop, not to mention the huge number of personal donations from all corners of Hadleigh.

The Jolly Meat Company launch Children’s Cooking Packs If you are looking for ways to keep the children entertained this February Half Term, you will love the new cooking packs available from the Jolly Meat Company. They include everything you will need to prepare a healthy family meal for 4 people. You can choose from the following packs, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Chicken Risotto or Sausage Casserole. The packs are available for £7.50 each or you can buy all 3 for just £20.00. As well as all the ingredients, you will also receive easy to follow cooking instructions, to ensure the whole family can get involved. Charlie Phillips, Manager at the Jolly Meat Company comments “The idea of our cooking packs is to help encourage parents to bring their children into the shop and help educate them on the provenance of their meat. National research carried our last year suggested that a fifth of school age children did not know that bacon comes from pigs. Living in such a rural town we hope that Hadleigh children have a better understanding of where their meat comes from, but a regular trip to a high street butchers can be a valuable exercise to help the whole family appreciate where their food comes from. We do also understand that going into a butchers shop can sometimes be quite daunting, and we want to help make it an enjoyable experience for customers of all ages. We appreciate that people don’t always know the best cuts of meat or the quantities required for the meal they are preparing, and that is where we are here to help. We really enjoy talking this through with customer, and making sure we offer the best buying and cooking advice. There is also the misconception that a high street butchers can be more expensive than buying from a supermarket, but this is not the case. Using a local butcher can actually be far more cost effective, as you are only buying what you actually need, reducing waste. The cooking packs are available to pre order and will be ready to collect between 15th – 19th February. For more information you can contact the Jolly Meat Company on 01473 810119 or visit the shop, 101 High Street, Hadleigh.

I also run an ‘open’ Circuit Class every Friday that anyone can join as well as provide bespoke Circuit Classes for small groups of friends and colleagues at times to suit them, such as the Kersey Primary School teachers, above. Robin Hood hits the bullseye in Hadleigh!

HADS (Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics) have just completed their annual panto of Robin Hood of Wolves Wood performed at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on the 14th, 15th &16th January. The audience cheered Robin Hood and booed at the Sheriff as he raised taxes for his evil hobby. With the help of Robin and his merry men and also Maid Marion with her right hand lady Saucy Pots the day was saved from the high taxes. The show was sponsored by the Hadleigh Thrift Shop who we would like to thank so much for funding this fantastic event. The thanks carries on to St Mary’s Church, Kelvin Avis, Hadleigh Pool and Leisure where our rehearsals and performance takes place. Also Tracey and Tara Alexander for makeup, all the front of house and behind scenes crew, all my fantastic cast which was doubled this year. My sound and lighting team Tom Gordon & Conner Whymark and my co-director Russ Allen. We hire costumes in but they have to be organised as well as props so thanks to Jo Sheldrake, Jo Goodyear and Nicola Hughes for sorting all this out. Now for one of the most important thank you. A MASSIVE thank you to my wife Sarah Clarke who took over the script writing from me to make it fantastic, its great to have a locally written script so we don't have to pay to perform it plus its kept nice and local with references people can relate too. I would also like to say a BIG thanks to Finezza pizza for providing the cast and crew pizza during performances on the Saturday it was very kind of you. Hadleigh means so much to me and i’d like to thank all the shops for advertising the show for us and also you the public for coming to see our panto. HADS will be 100 years old in 2020 so lets keep the entertainment coming. Find us on facebook under HADS or check out our website www.hads.moonfruit.com Trev Clarke, Chairman of HADS

As we are now in 2016 the plans for this ‘one day’, information giving event are well under way. We have a whole host of different businesses and charities who will be available for you to speak to in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh, from 10am - 4pm. Our aim is to give you as much help and information as we can regarding, ‘End of Life Care’ and ‘what needs to happen when someone dies?’ So many people have little idea of the legalities, or the process, or the options available for either scenario. Put the date in your diary to come and spend an hour or so touring the different stands and speaking to those who can help and inform you. So far we can confirm the following being present – Co-op Funeral Directors, Gotelee Solicitors, Hadleigh Baptist Church, Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Hadleigh Health Centre, Hadleigh URC, Hadleigh Town Council (Traditional, Woodland or Green Burials), St Mary’s Church, Suffolk Cruse, Talking Therapies, The Ram, Waterfield House Care Home and Waterstones Book Shop. When you come on the 14th you will also receive a bag with added information from organisations such as the Police (involvement in sudden deaths), Organ Donation, Seven Hills Crematorium plus much more. This year we have 2 additional interesting attractions for you. Firstly we have exhibitions in St Mary’s from Tuesday 10th May – Thursday 19th May. ‘Good Grief?’ - panel’s of embroidery sewn by a lady expressing her grief on the death of her husband. ‘Bald Statements’ - large heads depicting the facial expressions of the artist’s feelings when she was diagnosed with, and going through her treatment, for cancer. We will also have floral displays done by local groups on the theme of ‘Death’ and ‘End of Life Care’. Entrance to the exhibitions will be £1 on each day except Saturday 14th when the whole day is free of charge. Secondly, we have 5 x 45 minute ‘Masterclasses’ in the Guildroom at the Guildhall. We have booked representatives from Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Co-op Funeral Service, SIFRE (Suffolk Interfaith Resource), Gotelee Solicitors and Suffolk Cruse. Each will be available for you to go, free of charge, to hear what they have to say. Times will be announced over the next few months – watch this space or visit www.stmaryshadleigh.co.uk Finally, Kate Brett from Hadleigh Health Centre has some added information for you…….’Most individuals begin their career in medicine or nursing with a desire to diagnose, treat and help people for whom they provide care. Advancements in medicine, hospitals, equipment and procedures gives us the opportunity to do this on a daily basis. However an inevitable part of our role is discussing and planning for end of life care, by doing this we are also caring for and helping individuals and their families through those last few months, weeks, days and hours of life. We understand that this for many is a very difficult emotive topic and not always easy to talk about with others. Living with Dying gives you all the opportunity to come and discuss some of those tricky issues, dilemmas or questions which you may have about yourself or a loved one with a variety of clinicians including GP's, district nurse, Marie curie and Macmillan nurses’. Hadleigh Healing Society So far this winter Mother Nature has thrown many challenges at us with storms and torrential rain which has caused unprecedented levels of water in the rivers. Many people have had their homes flooded not only once but twice losing personal belongings and being faced with months of disruption to family life. Businesses have not escaped unscathed also farmers have lost many animals to the floods. Through all the news bulletins shown on television is the one prevailing fact that communities have pulled together to help each other during these tough times. It is what we do in this country in times of trouble. If you feel troubled by the problems that beset your everyday life at the Hadleigh Healing Society we have qualified, registered healers who will listen, not make judgement all in the strictest confidence. Just telephone: 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org for an appointment

So we’re now well into another year and before you know it spring will be here – my favourite time of year! It’s a time of renewal and new beginnings – the flowers and trees spring into life after their winter sleep and bring colour and beauty into the world. You can too!! By now we’ve (hopefully) recovered from the excesses of the Christmas party season and can start to look forward to our summer holidays, the warmer weather, trips to the beach, bbqs etc. Maybe the Christmas pud and partying have sabotaged your healthy eating habits and your clothes are feeling a bit snug..! If that’s the case and you want to feel slim and slinky again then why not try Cambridge Weight Plan to retrain your eating habits in time for spring. Cambridge Weight Plan has recently introduced several new products to enable people to eat “real” food to enhance the wide range of soups, shakes, bars and porridge. We now have Chicken Tikka Style Curry, Macaroni Cheese and 2 fruit Smoothies as well as the Spaghetti Bolognese and Mushroom Risotto introduced last year. Three* of these products a day provides 100% nutrition at a very low calorie level which means dieters can lose weight quickly (average weight loss is around a stone** a month) but at the same time be confident that they are giving themselves the very best level of nutrition – something that is very difficult to do in less than 1500kcals of “normal” food. Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has over 7 years’ experience so, for individual help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. You can get the body you want, and like thousands of others you could soon be saying ”I wish I’d found Cambridge sooner!”

Well, how wet did you get? What a start to the ‘Spring’ Term its been! We normally expect to cancel some rides at this time of year because of ice and snow; being in a mud bath is not normal for us. Aren’t we lucky to be on a hill in this lovely valley and not living in Cumbria! A picture of Bob looking sodden in deep mud in the back yard says it all I think. When the weather makes riding too horrible, our riders are kept busy doing their ‘Stable Management’ courses. The RDA has a good programme of Proficiency Tests which many of our clients take. ‘What are they doing to my tail?’ Graded from 1-4 in Riding and Horse asks Rocky! Care, we regularly award certificates to people, especially the boys from Hampden House who ride with us on Thursdays. We shall be encouraging our youngsters to enter the RDA Arts and Crafts competition too, the judging of which takes place at the RDA Annual Championships in Hartpury in July. Then there is the ASDAN programme in which we develop, record and reward young people’s personal achievements. If you are able to gain all four proficiency tests whilst with the Shelley Centre, there is yet more challenging stuff ahead. Some of you may have been at the Hadleigh Lighting up Ceremony back in December? Did you visit our stand on the grass outside the URC? (I hear there were two donkeys there!!!) Twins Nathaniel and Rowan were ambassadors for the Centre; now Bob, fed up with the mud, won’t young men at college, they started riding with us when they were 7 years look at the camera. old. Having passed all 4 grades in Horse Care and Riding they went on to the next level and took Bronze before leaving us. This was truly an amazing achievement but not content with that they are now working towards their Silver. This entails taking an afternoon off college to attend the Shelley Centre and work on this next level. We are all so proud of them! We are looking forward to more good results from our riders who take part in the Dessage Anywhere; they can video their entry and have it adjudicated without having to box up a horse and go somewhere else: that’s technology for you. Technology is where I Alfie comes in to be groomed come in of course, I’m the lucky one who can’t get wet and muddy as I live in my own dry room and just watch the wet horses and ponies coming in to get ready for their work. I get to meet all our riders over the winter months because they come to me for a quick piece of physiotherapy or to hone their trotting skills. So there is plenty of activity afoot, the ponies are back in their work routine, the volunteers are being brilliant as always, Lyn is keeping her eye on us all (including the eyes in the back of her head) and its business as usual. Ten Minutes to Change Your Life! Peake Fitness at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is proud to support The British Heart Foundation, and is staging a “Love your Heart” Open Evening on Thursday 25th February from 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm. The event is free to attend. The British Heart Foundation encourages us all to consider taking control of our own heart health, and this is a great time of year to decide to make even the smallest of changes that can have an impact. The following is just a small section of the vast range of advice they offer. Being active helps keep your heart healthy. If you are active every day you’ll be less likely to develop coronary heart disease. You are in control – by taking ten minutes a few times a day to get active, you could change your life. Being active helps lower your risk of coronary heart disease because it exercises your heart, helping to keep it strong; helps lower your cholesterol and helps lower your blood pressure, which means your arteries are less likely to clog up. It can also help you feel more relaxed, have more energy and give you a sense of achievement. However, being active doesn’t have to mean running a marathon, or swimming like an Olympic champion - gentle, everyday activities like walking, and climbing stairs are great ways to get started, and will help to lead you on to more structured and challenging exercises, which you can build into a routine. What can I do? Make small changes like walking rather than driving, and taking the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. Take a walk every day – to work, to the shop, or to see a friend; set a date and take your kids, grandchildren, pets or friends to the park. Time to push it! The type of activity that helps your heart the most will make you feel warmer, breathe harder and make your heart beat faster than usual. What can I do? - Set aside some time in your week for activities like brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, exercise classes or team sports like football or netball. - Aim to work up to at least 150 minutes of this type of activity a week. You can spread this out over the week however you like. Remember – every ten minutes counts. These are suggestions for generally healthy adults. If you have any health issues please talk to your doctor before you start any new activities. Next steps If you’d like to find out more about being active, download and print an A4 activity tracker, and/or further BHF publications, and gain more British Heart Foundation advice, go online to bhf.org.uk.

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together PANTOMIME Oh no we didn’t! Oh yes we did….. enjoy the pantomime on the first day back after Christmas. The whole school travelled by bus to Bury St Edmunds to see Jack & the Beanstalk at the wonderful Theatre Royal. The children shared their experience with pupils from our collaborated school, Whatfield Primary. The children have been working on literacy and numeracy topics linked to their experience when back in the classroom.

MP VISIT MP James Cartlidge has been working hard behind the scenes to secure additional funding for schools in Suffolk. He is taking a keen interest in seeing how our schools work and he visited our school on Friday 15 January. He had a tour of the school meeting pupils, discussed ideas with our school council members and talked to staff.

Also introducing round the clock on-site nursing care for inpatients

VET

NEW OPENING TIMES from 25th January 2016

We are delighted to announce that starting Monday 25th January 2016, Highcliff Veterinary Practice will be offering around the clock nursing care of hospitalised patients. This has been an aspiration of ours for some time and we R believe that this service will be unsurpassed by any veterinary IN A RY P R A practice in the area offering its own first opinion, out of hours service. We are continually told by our clients how important it is to them that we continue to offer our own out of hours care and it is at the very heart of what we do, “Providing Pet Care 24/7 For Over 100 Years”. The service will be run from our newly expanded and renovated Brantham Surgery, where improvements include state of the art facilities for hospitalisation of pets. Clients of our Hadleigh surgery need not worry, we undertake to safely move any patients requiring overnight monitoring to our Brantham surgery and back again in our bespoke Veterinary Ambulance. We would remind pet owners that our out of hours service is for our registered clients, those who are not registered with Highcliff Veterinary Practice should in the event of an out of hours emergency make contact with their usual veterinary practice. We have recruited several new faces to our teams of vets and nurses to facilitate this enhanced service and look forward to introducing them to you over the coming weeks. These additions to our teams have allowed us to extend our day time opening hours to:08:30 - 19:00 Mon- Thurs 08:30 - 18:00 Friday 08:30 - 13:00 Saturdays Hopefully this makes it more convenient than ever before to access veterinary care for your pet. Come and meet author Debby Holt Author Debby Holt will be talking about her latest novel, The Soulmate, on Saturday, March 19, 11:15 a.m at Hadleigh Library. The novel follows the experiences of 63-yearold widower, Henry, and his 35-year-old daughter, Maddie, as they try to find new partners. Henry lives in Higgleigh, a town in Suffolk that bears an uncanny resemblance to Hadleigh. Debby has drawn on the experiences of her friends and adult offspring for her new book. She is convinced that resilience is a key component for success in the dating game. Tickets are £3 and on sale from Hadleigh Library, or at The Cooking Experience, 9 High Street. Debby Holt is sister-in-law to Annie and Mark David at The Cooking Experience and she writes with great gusto and commitment. Her novels are a fun read and reflect her own life and that of her family and friends. Debby is very sociable and has a wonderful sense of humour, and she writes from the heart. News from The Station Hello, readers, I am still based at Hadleigh Police Station in my current role, as we are all still awaiting our fate. Once announcements have been made, I will of course update the community so that you are all aware of who will be policing your town and surrounding villages. It now looks like we are expected to face quite a hard month weather wise. The gritters have been out and about and more than likely windscreens are having to be de-iced in the morning. With this in mind, please allow yourselves sufficient time to defrost your windscreens before you set out on your journeys so that visibility is at a premium. Adjust your driving to the conditions on the roads. It is better to arrive at your destination later and safer, than not at all. If you intend venturing on a long journey, it is easy to put supplies in the boot, such as blankets, shovel, de-icer – always be prepared. The cold weather brings with it other issues apart from driving conditions. Please check on elderly neighbours, family members who perhaps live alone and cannot get out and about when it is icey. They may need help with items of shopping, or just check that they are keeping warm and cosy. Whilst we are still experiencing the darker nights, please ensure that your outbuildings, sheds, garages and cars are locked up. Over recent months in outlying villages particularly, we have had a number of break-ins with tools and other equipment being stolen from sheds. PIR – Person activated shed alarms are available to be bought from the Police Station at Hadleigh for £8.00, but other DIY superstores sell them. Similarly, when leaving your homes for a night out, always leave a light on in several rooms to make burglars think twice about whether there is anyone at home. Simple advice but often effective advice. As we look forward to Spring and the better weather, children will want to be out and about on their bikes. We all know they throw them down to play with their mates, without a thought that they might get stolen. So, in half term week I will be running a BIKE MARKING EVENT. Tuesday 16th February 2016 at PYKENHAM PARK SKATE PARK 10-12 am and HADLEIGH LEISURE CENTRE, Stonehouse Road 1-3pm. Please encourage your children to come and see me and get their bikes, scooters and skateboards marked. For everyone who participates, their names will be put into a prize draw. I will look forward to meeting lots of children, please do come along. Until, hopefully next month. Please remember if you witness anything or are a victim of crime, call 999 (emergency) or 101 (non-emergency). Our wonderful Whatfield children, past and present, were celebrating their fantastic results, published recently in the Department for Education league tables. Their hard work meant the school was placed top Primary School in Suffolk according to the Telegraph performance table, and in the top 150 schools in the country according to the Times. This is a tribute to the hard work of the pupils, staff and parents. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting James Cartlidge MP recently. He has children of his own attending a Suffolk Primary School, and this showed as he chatted to the children, and in particular the school council. Pupils asked interesting and perceptive questions, relating their experience of democracy when electing their school counsellors to the elections last May. He explained some of the conventions of Parliament and what it was like to ask a question at Prime Minister’s question time. He could also tell the pupils what the Queen looked like close up! They asked him many questions, ranging from ‘What kind of face did you make when you found out you had been elected?’ to ‘What are you doing about Syria?’ We have been really pleased to continue with our new Maths scheme, ‘Maths, No Problem!’ based on the Singapore Bar method of calculation. Our school is one of a few pioneers, as the scheme is very new, but it has been enthusiastically received by pupils across the school, and follows advice to ensure that pupils have access to practical materials to aid understanding. So far so good! Lots of exciting events have taken place this term, including some very special enrichment activities, which meant that our pupils have had access to some fantastic opportunities. We have taken part in Dance workshops lead by Northern Ballet, as well as enjoying opportunities to play Basketball at Hadleigh High School, reading at Elmsett and accepting a maths challenge from Kersey. This term Staff and Pupils have been excited to take on the International Primary Curriculum, which will help the children develop skills across the curriculum , as well as continue to develop a world view, as the topics always have a global dimension. We have started really positively, and as we go through the year will keep you updated on some of the brilliant things we have learnt about. This year’s Big School Birdwatch was a cold but exciting event, with a surprising amount of birds evident in our large school grounds. We always enjoy taking time to enjoy the wildlife in our beautiful Suffolk countryside, and it is amazing how long young children can wait silently if they are involved in the activity. Our results will be posted on the RSPB website. Whatfield CEVCP School would welcome a visit if you would like to have a look around our lovely school. To arrange one please telephone (01473) 823309. That pesky Ollie (the Black) Cat was at the computer again, trying to usurp me as author of Ken’s SESAW News! Lucky I was here to take over and give you some breaking news just before Community News deadline. We have launched the “Amazing Maisie Appeal” on JustGiving to help fund life changing treatment for a long suffering dog. Maisie the Springer endured seven years of pain and could hardly walk due to a birth defect. She certainly couldn't run and for a Springer that is horrendous. Upon her arrival at SESAW our vet, Simon, diagnosed the problem and performed life changing surgery. A few days later, Mum was hand feeding her with Christmas dinner as Maisie faced six weeks of bed rest. She already manages so much better and rewards her carers with a lick as her dressings are changed. If you could say a dog was smiling, that's Amazing Maisie. Donation towards the cost of Maisie's treatment accepted via our website and in person at the Sanctuary or at Swayne and Partners in Long Melford. Ollie says his fellow black cats and kittens are still being overlooked. He is also worried about two of his friends, homeless due to their owner’s illness. Baby and Julian are handsome long haired, black and white cats, looking for an adult only home where they would be the only animals. If you are the special person they need, please leave a phone message or email Mum. We still have tables available at our Spring Sale in the Old School, Long Melford on 10th April. This has proved a very successful venue for sellers and Public alike so why not book a £10 space to sell your excess things? Phone 01206 263269 or visit our website to download a booking form. Time to click send before I press the wrong key and delete my hard work. It's also time I had a little nap by the Rayburn so move over everyone and make space for me, Kenny the Boss, Chihuahua. 1991 was the year of Terminator 2, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Whitney Houston, Queen, the Super Nintendo game system and Cabbage Patch Kids. It was also when something called the internet clocked up its millionth worldwide user. How times change. But there have been some constants including Birch Farm. Yes, we were founded in 1991 and so we are now 25 years old! We think that fact alone makes us one of the longest-lasting nurseries in Suffolk, ...if not the country. But our real pride is in the care and education we have been able to offer to the 1000-plus youngsters who have been part of the Birch Farm family over that time. And that is why we would love to hear from any past pupils and their parents, grandparents and carers. Just email us at: mini@birchfarm.co.uk to say hi and to get in touch. We’d really like to hear about any of your memories or thoughts about Birch Farm as we hope to display as many recollections in time for our 25th celebrations at our Summer Fayre on Saturday 2nd July – to which you will be invited. So please come and join in our 25th anniversary year. After all – you are a key reason why we are still going strong. Mini and Darren Shakespeare

Kersey Mill Newsletter January has seen the continuation of the repairs to the main frame with huge amounts of timber arriving from the Thetford area. Timber has been used to construct buildings for centuries, roofs, flooring, joists, posts, windows and doors, building like Kersey Mill that are completely timber framed would have been built from materials sourced locally. Structural timber repairs are very much at the forefront of the current restorations works supported by Historic England. Some of the main timbers failed as a result of years of water ingress, moisture causes such decay and allows rot to drastically reduce the strength of the timber, some massive timbers completely disappeared and of others, only dust remains. The main structural timbers that we are currently repairing were so heavy and strong as their main role was to support the load from the grain storage bins that would have been loaded with as much as 100 tons at their capacity. Clearly the mill is unlikely to ever carry such weight again but our aim is to repair like for like and to do the minimum that we can. This is the same approach that was taken when repairing the waterwheel. If it can be repaired Photographed are some of the spliced or scarfed then it is, we want new joists over the boulter. to achieve a repaired building containing as much of the original fabric as possible. You can see in the photograph one complete new vertical timber and the 2 scarfed ends of 2 horizontal tie beams. When working on the mill it becomes very apparent how many different repairs have happened over the past two hundred years. There is oak flooring to parts of the front elevation, whilst the back newer section of flooring which was added to the original mill around 1860 is all pine. Repairing failed structural timbers is, of course, not a new practice. For centuries Photograph is of a cup handle repairs have been fashioned using now visible on the boulter in carpentry methods or with blacksmith- the shape of a belt and buckle made splints, brackets and ties, and these ancient repairs certainly add character and help tell the story of the building again wherever we can retain original metal work and use again we will. We have also taken into consideration the impact of any particular repair. If the timber were removed, how much damage or loss of fabric would occur around it? The next open day at the mill will be Sunday April 24th 2016 in conjunction with Drive it day we will have lots of classic and vintage cars visiting and on display. If you have a vintage vehicle please bring it along, we would be Photograph is of the boulter. delighted to see you.

Hadleigh and also at Pamber Heath on the outskirts of Basingstoke where his widowed mother had moved. After his death his mother probably became aware of the incorrect place of birth on his service records and in an attempt to set the record straight, had his true place of birth inscribed on his gravestone. On the home front, February 1916 was characterised by plenty of rain, heavy gales, sharp frosts and snow storms. These conditions led the river Brett to overflow its banks and flood roads. During the month the process of conscription was ongoing and men who were not yet in the forces, were being placed into the army reserve and categorised according to age and marital status. The youngest and unmarried were the highest priority and so would be the first to be mobilised. Individuals could apply for exemption from conscription through a local tribunal. However, the Hadleigh tribunal was overseen by a military man, ‘Captain Hoggan’ and so rather than accept applications, the tribunal tended to place the applicant into a lower priority and hence delayed his call up. This was the case for a motor and cycle repairer and also for the son of a local gunsmith who claimed he was an expert sight-tester and was engaged largely in the repair of rifles for the Volunteer corps. Several cases involved agricultural labourers and

The 2nd Battery would remain in Hadleigh and another contingent of soldiers was expected. A national call reached Hadleigh for men with mechanical skills or able to drive motor vehicles as there was a recruitment campaign for the Royal Flying Corps. Nationally ten thousand men were wanted [the Royal Flying Corps would play a vital role in the Battle of the Somme later in 1916]. SKy Watch

by Neil Norman

Sky Watch - M42. (Orion nebula) In February, Orion is high in the southern sky and is one of the most easily recognised constellations, but if you're unsure, the graphic shows you how to locate this amazing constellation. Look for the three stars half way down that resemble the hunters belt. Next , look to the lower right for a vertical row of stars that make up the hunter's sword. Can you see a fuzzy "star" in the middle of the sword? That's M42 or otherwise known, The Orion Nebula. With a humble pair of 10x50 binoculars, the fuzzy star will appear in the other image herein, a 3" telescope or larger will give you a breathtaking view of this very bright emission nebula. For those wanting to impress their children with a delightful astronomical sight, this is it. So what is M42? Well, it's a stellar nursery, located some 1,400 light years away, imagine, the light hitting your eyes left the nebula in 616 AD. The nebula is 25 light years across, so is a very large cloud of hydrogen and helium , the stuff that stars are made of. The image shows a group of stars in the centre of the nebula, they are known as the Trapezium. These stars actually shape the nebula with their stellar winds and their light illuminates the cloud so that we can see it. In 100,000 years from now the nebula won't exist as the stars will have dispersed the gas leaving behind a brand new star cluster very much like the Pleiades or 7 sisters that are visible in Taurus. Before I go, I must wish my partner, Zoe Pearce a very happy birthday for February 18t . Lots of love from keira-louise, Zack and me. Any questions you may have, please do contact me on the email below. Till next month, clear skies, Neil Norman. neilnorman03@gmail.com

Fudge is retiring... Just thought those of you that are interested would like to know that Fudge, my wonderful guide dog of 9 and a half years is to retire on her 11th Birthday, 2nd February, as we have the only guide dog partnership in Hadleigh during this time I am sure everybody knows us on our daily walks around Hadleigh. She has been my first guide dog and a terrific worker and has got me out a few muddles over that time, I always knew she would look after me even putting herself at risk to do so, what a star she has been. She will continue to live with me in retirement and I will use my long white cane much more as she deserves her rest from now on. I would like to thank the residents of Hadleigh that have taken the time to speak to us and of course any help they have given us too. Here's hoping she will have many more years of good health to enjoy. Maggie Davy

Baroque composers revelled in the bright and sensuous sonorities of two sopranos with continuo, producing masterpieces such as Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s sensuous ‘Spring’ motet setting lines from the Song of Solomon, Henry Purcell’s Elegy on the Death of Queen Mary and François Couperin’s superb setting of the Magnificat In the second half we lower the tone with frank and witty explorations of secular love, by Monteverdi, Charpentier and Couperin, ending with duets from Purcell’s King Arthur and Dioclesian. Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers January saw 21 walkers take the long route to the Kersey Bell in beautiful weather for a delightful lunch following which, suitably refreshed, we walked the Monk’s Path back to Hadleigh in the rain! Our February walk will take place on Saturday 13th. We will catch the 0942 bus at the Hadleigh Bus Station (car park side) towards Sudbury. We will start at the Halfords roundabout on entering Sudbury and will then walk to Chilton Hall, Cuckoo Tye, Long Melford, Brundon, Ballingdon and end up at Sudbury Bus Station for the 2pm bus back to Hadleigh. The walk is 8 miles and everyone, including well behaved dogs, is welcome. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as, being winter, the ground can be wet, muddy and rough in places. Route maps can be emailed on request to anyone interested. For further information about these walks email us at hfpvwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01473 823328 or 07858 955678.

Hadleigh 2015 The Recorders Annual Report The year began with changes to shopping premises, The Jolly Meat Co. moved further along the High Street to the former Sunflower shop, while Gregg’s the bakers closed for one week to enable an internal refit. February saw a Civic Service held in the parish church to commemorate the 460th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Rowland Taylor, Rector of Hadleigh, The High Sheriff of Suffolk attended. Many were saddened to learn of the death of Bruce Sutherland, who was a former well known veterinary surgeon in the town for many years. During March work began, and was completed to convert the front area of the Co-op store in the High Street into a coffee shop, while a small tack shop in Angel Street closed after only a few months in business. There was controversy as Councillor Brian Riley, County Councillor for Hadleigh proposed to move to America yet still retain his seat. The empty Corn Exchange building in the Market Place was put up for sale by the Suffolk County Council in April. In May there was held the local, and General Elections and on the same day it was the 70th anniversary of V.E. Day when the mayor attended a short commemoration at the war memorial. The annual Hadleigh Farmers Show held at Holbecks had fine weather. The show included the launch of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep. Many shops displayed sheep related items, and sheep bunting adorned the High Street. Margaret Jarvis celebrated her 100th birthday. Mid year saw a successful Rosa Simon concert workshop held in the Ansell Centre, and the Women’s Cycle Race passed through the town. During July the death of Tom McIntosh, conductor and concert pianist, aged 76 of The Old School was reported. The town’s only thatched property, located in George Street was undergoing repairs. The bright yellow R.A.F. Search & Rescue helicopter from nearby Wattisham airfield, a familiar sight in the skies over the town, ceased its role during August and moved elsewhere. The month was quite wet. The inaugural Gayford Flyer cycling festival was held during September. The Grand Finale of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep, and sheep muster was held in the parish church and surrounds. At 9am a flock of sheep were driven along the High Street, into the Market Place and then penned in the churchyard. Morris Dancers, a Community Choir of school children, costumed presentations, spinning, and quill pen writing and exhibitions were some of the activities held, and large numbers attended in the fine weather. During October, a £120,000 Skate Park opened. Following public consultations the Hadleigh Town Council decided not to purchase the old Corn Exchange buildings and S.C.C. placed it onto the open market. The autumn colours were especially stunning this year. For November, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church car park was being surfaced, and back in the High Street the Hadleigh Thrift shop moved into larger premises, the former Hicks Electrical premises, which was adjacent. T he Hadleigh Loyalty Card scheme which was to have finished was rescued by the Thrift Shop. The autumn was very mild and this continued throughout to the final month of the year. Early daffodils came into flower. Sadly, Margaret Jarvis who had celebrated her 100th birthday earlier in the year passed away, she was along time member of St. Mary’s Church Choir. There was a Hadleigh Christmas Lights switch-on held in the Market Place together with entertainment. The High Street, and Market Place looked attractive for the Christmas build up for shoppers and others, and so concluded another year for the town of Hadleigh. Roger Kennell, Hadleigh Recorder

Happy New Year to everyone in Hadleigh! We hope you all had a lovely Christmas! Well done to the children who have worked hard to raise money for charity! A family at St Mary’s decided that they would like to support disadvantaged people around the world by improving sanitation and building new toilets. The boys were really brave and did a whole-school assembly about Toilet Twinning. They shared lots of facts about the problems caused by poor sanitation around the world and explained how the Toilet Twinning charity makes a real impact and saves lives. There was also a little bit of toilet humour! Then the boys and their family organised a big event after school in the hall. There were lots of games to play and things to buy. It was really busy and they managed to raise more than £200, which is almost enough to purchase a whole school block of toilets! Thanks to all the children and grown-ups who helped on stalls or baked cakes. We are really proud of how the children have shown compassion for others and taken positive action to make a difference! The children in Years 5 and 6 enjoyed working together and taking part in Epiphany workshops at St Mary’s Church. Thanks to Trish Pitt and all the members of the church community who helped the children and who ensure that the Inspire Education programme at the church provides such excellent experiences for them. The children explored the journey of the wise men through a labyrinth and made mobiles. Bible readings about Epiphany helped the children to write their own Epiphany prayers, which were very thoughtful. When we asked the children about the workshops, they said: “I enjoyed walking the labyrinth and writing the prayers because I liked thinking then writing down what Epiphany really means.” “I also enjoyed the labyrinth because I didn’t realise that the wise men had to leave everything to see Jesus.” “Prayer writing was peaceful…” “I enjoyed spending time with the adults as they took the time to be with us.” Once again, we held sharing cafés during January. The cafés are a great way for parents to find out about their children’s learning and share in the inspiration and excitement. The sharing cafés continue to be successful and we have had an increasing number of parents attend, including aunts, uncles and grandparents. This café was maths based and each class shared a story on a maths topic which then followed by completing a maths activity (and a bit of cake!). Parents said: “Lovely to see the children enjoy their learning.” “Lovely, relaxed atmosphere and very welcoming.” Thanks to Pastor Greg, who joined us for assembly in January. We are thinking about the value of ‘compassion’ this half term. Greg read the poem ‘Footprints in the Sand’ by Mary Stevenson and talked about how we help and carry others in times of need.

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net After a relaxing Christmas holiday, we are all happy to be back at school and learning again. We hope 2016 is as successful as 2015 has been. We look forward to what the New Year holds. There are new and exciting events in the upcoming term such as: the School Pantomime ‘Aladdin’ on February 8th, 9th and 10th; the East Anglian Cross Country Championships; and the Year 7 and Year 11 Parents’ Evenings. There are also trips abroad: Year 10s are going to Berlin, as well as the very popular Ski Trip. Aladdin It will soon be time for Hadleigh High School to put on the exciting production of ‘Aladdin’. Everyone has worked hard on the production as it’s going to be a very impressive show. Many students have got involved with this opportunity, not only in acting but in singing and dancing too. Everyone has put in a lot of effort into the production. As well as support from staff at Hadleigh, we have been lucky enough to receive help from outside too. Moya Quinn has designed the backdrops for the production and Mike Quinn, who is a governor at Hadleigh High, has also been helping the actors to develop their characterisation. This has developed the actors’ confidence as well as performance skills. There will be three evening performances: the 8th, 9th, and 10th of February. We hope to see as many of you there as possible! Tickets are available from the High School.

More revision for Year 10… Recently, Year 10 have been preparing for their English assessment on ‘An Inspector Calls’ which takes place soon. Mrs Reader, Subject Leader for English, thinks that the exam is “a valuable opportunity to get some experience before it comes to the real thing.” Year 10 have enjoyed studying the play and one student spoke very highly about it: “It is different to a lot of other pieces of work we are studying at the moment and there are so many things to analyse in the play, including plot twists that really make the play interesting to discuss.” Year 10 are revising hard for this, and we wish them all the very best of luck and hope they have great success in the exam. German cultural project brings schools together Year 8 have been working on a cultural project in their German lessons. They have been in contact with a school in Germany working in partnership with them as pen pals and also sending parcels to one another to develop learning and cultural understanding of the country itself. Before breaking up for the Christmas holidays, our Year 8 pupils received a lovely Christmas parcel. Jenny, the Foreign Language assistant, spoke about how this project is an opportunity for both schools, “This project is about building bridges between two different schools and exchanging gifts to gain a better understanding of other countries and schools, and to help pupils appreciate why learning a language is important.” As Jenny comes from Germany herself, she was surprised to see that we celebrate Christmas differently to her family, as we celebrate it later than they do. So far the Year 8s have enjoyed this partnership and the on-going project is helping them to widen their outlook of why a language is so important. Essex University Lecture for EPQ students EPQ (Extended Presentation Qualifying) is an opportunity for Year 10 students. On the 12th January, a group of students, taking EPQ, visited Essex University to listen to a lecture about Censorship in China. The students who visited the University said that the lecture was very insightful and interesting and many of them had not been to a lecture before. One student said, “It is a fantastic opportunity as you get to extend your abilities and learn skills that you may use in later life.” The EPQ is valued by Sixth Form provides and universities. Year 10 fly to Berlin At the end of March, a group of year 10 students, who are taking either History or German or EPQ are going on a 3 day trip to Berlin. They will be flying to Berlin and are looking forward to learning about the city and experiencing life in Germany first hand.

MP visits Hadleigh High Recently, Hadleigh High were lucky enough to be visited by South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge. Mr MacRae organised this for the Switch Forum which meets every Tuesday afternoon. Whilst here, James Cartlidge explained the responsibilities he holds as an MP of South Suffolk. He also answered many students’ questions, and was able to keep a professional face even whilst under the pressure of answering the more difficult questions like ‘Why are you condoning the bombing in Syria’. Overall Mr MacRae said, “He was very open and honest and responded well to the students”

Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan Update Hadleigh Town Council’s Neighbourhood Plan group is continuing its work on gathering opinions on shaping Hadleigh’s future. The business/retail survey has been distributed to all businesses and shops in Hadleigh and replies are starting to come in. However, we’re aware that some people in the town operate from home or are running online businesses. If you’d like to take part, please contact us (details below) and you’ll be sent a form. It’s important that we have the opinions of as wide a range of shops and businesses in the town as possible when we consider future developments in the town. This month will also see the next stage in the ongoing work with St Mary’s Primary School and we’re looking forward to hearing what its pupils feel is important in the town and how they see its future. Hopefully, the other schools in the town will feel that this is something to which they’d like to contribute and will be contacting us soon. The next stage in the Plan is to analyse all our findings and begin to think about priorities and projects and we’ll be publicising these in the near future. As always, the group is keen to get others involved. Please contact us for details. You can contact us at hadleighneighbourhoodplan@gmail.com or via our Facebook page

Babergh Chairman presents Charity Cash A charity which aims to preserve the childhood home of artist Thomas Gainsborough is now £3,000 better off - thanks to the fundraising efforts of Babergh District Council’s Chairman. On 7th January a cheque was presented to Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury, by Cllr Nick Ridley as one of his chosen charities for the year. Cllr Ridley, who has represented the Brook Ward for more than 12 years and was reappointed in May 2015 as Chairman of Babergh District Council, said: “Having been involved with Gainsborough’s House for a number of years, I am excited about the plans they have to transform the childhood home of Thomas Gainsborough. I hope that the funds raised will help them on their way with this project.” Cllr Ridley, who was accompanied by his wife Jessie, was delighted to be able to support Gainsborough’s House, a charity he has had a long connection with. His other nominated charity is The Bumblebee Children’s Charity, Sproughton, which was presented with its cheque just before Christmas. The money was raised from The Chairman's Civic Reception, and other fundraising activities, as well as a donation from the Lord Belstead Trust, of which Cllr Ridley is a trustee. And Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Nick Ridley has chosen Gainsborough’s House as one of his charities. “It is great to be recognised locally and we’re very grateful for the support from the local council. “It’s an increasingly tough time for museums so such support really does make a difference.” Earlier this year, Mr Bill explained the importance behind the fundraising. He added: “Gainsborough’s House is currently fundraising to achieve a major capital project. Babergh District Council has already given crucial support and we are so grateful. “We are seeking to enhance the enjoyment of the largest collection of his art that exists, build the only substantial exhibition space in Suffolk, provide an imaginative educational programme and lead the regeneration of the our ancient market town of Sudbury. “This project will be transformational not only to the museum, but will also be a catalyst for the regeneration of the market town of Sudbury, which will attract significant levels of tourism and adding to a greater pride of place.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS: Apart from one really wet evening, the weather was quite good allowing all the collections to take place. The final result was the best for over 10 years: House to House £983.21, Morrisons £525.61 and High Street on Christmas Eve £324.35 to which must be added a donation of £20 giving a grand total of £1853.17. Many, Many thanks to everyone who gave so generously. As usual the children were excited to see Father Christmas and the float whilst the collectors were encouraraged tremendously by the pictures and kind remarks posted on Hadleigh Noticeboard. Many thanks to the people who took the time to post these. The remark about the Aldham Road route has been noted. Grateful thanks go to the Manager and staff of Morrisons for allowing the collection and helping to manoeuvre the float into place. The bulk of the money is being distributed between the following local charities: Hadleigh Sea Scouts, Rosa Simon Music Fund, Surviving Winter in Hadleigh, Hadleigh Girl Guides, Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding and Sue Ryder Synergy Cafe. Any remaining funds will be allocated locally as required during the next few months. The Club is also indebted to a number of local businesses and friends who help each year with equipment and collecting.Thank you very much to all of them: Gary Hambling of Hambling Utility Services for loan of generator and for towing, Simon Foster of Crockatt Garage Ltd for towing, Ainger Holbrows Ltd for loan of battery, Hadleigh Bowling Club for providing a home for the float during the Christmas period, Fred Pratt for housing it during the rest of the year and finally the collectors / Father Christmases - George Wyatt, Brian Strutt, Trevor Stockton, David Walmsley, Claire Coster, Pam Bennett. Kate Sands, Mr Hitchcock-Brown, Derek Curtis, Richard Whiting and Steve Laing. The last three are associate Members of the Club. Without their help the collections would not have taken place. CLUB EVENTS: The regular New Year Champagne Brunch took place on 2nd January at Queens Head, Lower Layham and virtually all members and wives attended. Thanks go to Steve and family for laying on a very nice breakfast with bubbly to make the morning go with a swing. SPEAKER: Michael Evans, Strategic Director (People) at Babergh District Council, was the first speaker of 2016, however his subject was not local government but rather his former career in the Royal Navy where he served 35 Years. Aged 18 he moved from school in Cardiff to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth which, with its private school atmosphere and strict discipline, came as quite a shock to him. He must have done well however, as, immediately following his first posting on a fishery patrol vessel in the Caribbean, he was sent to University to study for a degree. During this period also he was given the opportunity to experience a variety of different sections of the Service including Submarine and Flying. He qualified as a Helicopter pilot and warfare officer spending a year in the South Atlantic following the Falklands War where he visited South Georgia and also met Mrs Thatcher when she visited the Falklands. His first major command was HMS Birmingham, an Air Defence Destroyer with 256 crew, mainly patrolling the Atlantic, Caribbean and Mediterranean. Whilst in the Mediterranean he was involved in a horrendous helicopter accident. They were on joint exercise with the Italian Navy and he and his Italian counterpart were invited to dine with the Admiral of the Fleet. Afterwards they were picked up by an Italian helicopter which took him to his ship first but misjudged the landing and overturned into the sea. He and the crew were rescued but the Italian Captain drowned. He remembers very little of the time he was in the water. After this he became more land based spending time in the USA on an international research fellowship in Naval Defence then, after being attached to the Ministry of Defence for a while, he was sent to Brussels working with the North Atlantic Council. Then came one of the most interesting periods of his career when he went to Pakistan as Naval Air Advisor to the High Commission. He lived in the foothills of the Himalayas and became very friendly with the local people who were most welcoming. His final posting was as Chief of Staff at the Maritime Warfare School with 3000 staff dealing with all aspects of warfare at sea. It was a polished and compelling talk enjoyed by everyone in the audience which also included the wives of members. ITworx - Technology Tamed Computer Help and Advice My name is Ian Fovargue and I operate a computer repair, advice and technical support business. Based in Boxford, Suffolk. Computers and the Internet are now a part of our everyday lives. It is said that having internet access is as important as having electricity or water. I'm not sure I quite agree with that philosophy but yes it's becoming more and more difficult to pay bills, get information and communicate quickly without having an internet connection, and either a computer, tablet or smartphone. When I set up my part time business 5 years ago I soon realised that many people were struggling to make technology work for them and were frustrated with the technical support they received when problems occurred. I visit people in their own homes and over the years I have built up a large customer portfolio. My services include the repair of computers (mac or pc), virus removal, upgrades, tuition, advice, wireless networking and setup of new equipment.Through personal recommendations my business has grown from strength to strength. In January 2016 I will be operating "ITworx" as a full time job. This will enable me to visit customers, at times that fit in with their needs, during the day or early evening. If you need help or advice then give me a call. I can visit you at home with prices starting at £35 for the first hour. Exotic Eastern Oriental Dancing is not the usual pastime for members of Hadleigh Evening WI. Eastern Delights, a group of seven ladies dressed in sparkly, colourful, revealing costumes, entertained us with an exhibition of what appeared to be rather sophisticated belly dancing to oriental music. Their hips were gyrating, bodies shimmying and accompanying hand and arm movements that were worthy of “Strictly”. Pamela gave us a brief history of the dance which originated in Arab countries and Eastern Europe, making its way to the UK around the 1960s. It was exhausting to watch them, but never less choreographer Sonya persuaded most of us to give it a go. Following our efforts Sonya invited one of our more talented, supple members to join her class! Naomi Partridge a founder member of Hadleigh Evening will be 90 in February. We are celebrating the event with a lunch party at a local restaurant. Our next meeting will be on 16th February in the Seminar suite above Hadleigh Library, starting 7.30pm. Jason Rickards will talk about recycling, quite a change from exotic dancing! Visitors and new members are welcome. For further details you are welcome to contact Philippa Carruthers 01473 823057 email:- phil.carruthers40@hotmail.co.uk

Phoenix Trees at Orchard Barn At Orchard Barn we aim not to waste anything, so when we needed to move a mass of well-rotted, organic debris from one part of the site we had to find a good home for it. In the orchard were a couple of phoenix trees, apple trees that probably blew over in the gales of Oct 1987 and continued to grow, which needed weed suppression to give them a chance to thrive. Lots of old newspaper was soaked in a tub of water and then laid several sheets thick over an area around each tree. The debris was then piled on top. Not only will the newspaper prevent all but the most persistent weeds from seeing daylight but the debris will add to the nutrients in the soil around each tree. We hope that by piling the debris up around the fallen trunks that new growth (roots and shoots) will be encouraged. If you’d like to see our fruit trees why don’t you pay us a visit? Come along any Wednesday, we are SW of Mill Road, Battisford or visit our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473-658193.

Valentines Special Menu Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We start off with a vote of thanks to both Hadleigh Town Council and The Cock Inn. The Town Council for a show of support with not only a grant but a perfectly legal way to maximise it for the purchase of thermal wear. The Cock Inn held a Quiz Evening and the proceeds were shared between ourselves and the welfare fund for Hadleigh seniors. We understand that almost one hundred people had a good evening. Joy and Kevin the licensee's have our grateful thank's and their next quiz will be on Feb. 16th.organised by Peter Matthews. We are pleased that we were able to assist via the good offices of District Councillor Grandon with fuel for two needy constituents. We have had a run on our fuel reserves and if anyone would like to make a small donation it would be most gratefully accepted. El Nino has been a bit late as yet and perhaps the earlier warm spell has took us off guard. Please do not relax and keep warm as a prolonged chill can be more debilitating and dangerous than a sudden short change in temperature. Remember this charity is for all applicants there is no age distinction. All we require is for applicants to be on the accepted list of one of the supporting National Charities as we do not conduct any enquiries into applicants eligibility. We will supply help to those not registered but on the understanding that they will so apply. Perhaps next month we will state again our aims but remember this is a charity for Hadleigh and it’s surrounding villages. Tel:Fred Breyer 01473 829127, Peter Gower 01473 827005. Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Our January meeting saw four of our members take ‘centre stage’ to give a brief talk on a gardening subject close to their hearts. It was again good to welcome some new people to our merry band. First up was Dave who explained how his regular gardening column input to ‘talking newspapers’ worked. This is a wonderful voluntary service for the blind which Dave has been involved with The members in the photograph are from for many years. left to right - Brian Partridge, Andy Leeder, Next was John who Dave de Negri and John Wild entertained us with stories from his time as a competition judge at horticultural shows, noting that more than once he has come across errant entries of shop bought produce, or even silk flowers from folk who try just a little too hard to win! Third was Brian who gave a brief overview of his lifelong passion for alpine plants, showing us pictures of an alpine garden at the top of a mountain in Austria. I rounded things off with an overview of my own journey from working in an office to becoming a gardener. Next month we return to having visiting guest speakers when Andrew Brogan from the Henstead Exotic Garden will be giving a presentation. This will be on Monday February 8th at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall. The entrance fee is just £1 for members and £3 for non-members. We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Fidelis Activity News Let’s Twist Again:- With the Apex Bury St Edmunds transformed into an American Diner, all was set to host the vibrant show ‘Let’s Twist Again’ starring the talented Chris and Suzi Madin. Suzi convincingly performed songs by Lulu, Dusty, Sandie Shaw, Pet Clarke and many other celebrities from the 50’s and 60’s. Her husband, Chris, of ‘Strictly’ fame, spent most of the time in the background. Happily, he was very much in the foreground for the grand finale when he energetically performed several Beatles’ songs. It wasn’t long before the audience were on their feet, dancing in the aisles or near their seats. Fidelis’ members were happy to join in as it completed a most enjoyable, nostalgic evening. Lunch Bunch:- To avoid possible travel issues during the winter months, Lunch Bunchers tend to stay closer to home. As many members had not visited The White Hart since its makeover, this was the ‘local’ venue for their monthly foodie outing. Owners Ros and Simon looked after the hungry group with care and attention. Food was delicious with only empty plates returning to the kitchen after each course. Lively discussions over lunch ranged from the floods, refugees, War and Peace and the controversial plan to charge for parking in Hadleigh. As always Fidelis lunches are not only about eating. JD

My Good Samaritan I would like to say a sincere Thank You to the very kind gentleman who helped me up in Tayler Road in the early hours of Christmas Morning. I had come home from Midnight Mass (not the pub!) when my wheelchair decided to go off the kerb and dump me on the road. No bones broken and the chair's fine, I just didn't get a chance to thank you properly, so I hope you read this as I so appreciate your kindness. Fiona Taylor

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts I have decided that this will be the last Garden Column that I write. My health deteriorated significantly over the Christmas Season, and this will restrict the gardening that I can do in future, so I have decided that this would be a good time to stop. I started writing the column in 1988 when it looked as though the Garden Club (Then Hadleigh Horticultural Society) was about to close down. Happily it recovered and is still running successfully today. My other thoughts at the moment are the crazy effects of the weather on our gardens. As I write this some parts of the country are reporting early displays of snowdrops and daffodils. I have none of these out but on New Years Day I did a count, and found flowers on the following 31 plants in my garden :Flowering properly: Jasminum nudiflorum, Viburnum x bodnantense, Chimonanthus praecox, Lonicera fragrantisima, Chanomeles x suberba, Mahonia, Heather, Rosemary, An ornamental plum/cherry, Rockery campanula (2 different), Primrose, Hebe (2 Different), Leucojum aestivum, Mauve Perennial Wallflower. Isolated Flowers: Begonia semperflorens, Gazania, Strawberry, Loganberry, Muscari, Calendula, Chrysanthemum, Nerine, Rose, Violet, Abelia grandiflorum, Gailardia, Oesteospermum, Berberis darwinii. I usually do a count for a newsgroup that I follow, but usually the list stops somewhere about ten. The first three in the lists are reliable early flowering plants that I would expect to see. The rest are mainly in two categories:- (a) survivors because of the lack of hard frosts and (b) plants that are flowering early. I am also very relieved that although our gardens are very wet at the moment, we have not had the floods that they have had in the North. Now in January we are starting to get some colder weather, and there have been a few flakes of snow. I wonder how the "early" plants will like this. Weather Records In December at Kersey there was 47.8 mm (1.9”) of rain which is close to our average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of December was 160.7 mm (6.3”) which is slightly higher than the average figure. The December rainfall figures complete another year. We had 550.9 mm (21.7”) of rain in 2015. This 84% of the annual average rainfall taken over the last 17 years. In December the maximum temperature was 14 Cel (57F) which is about 3 degrees higher than the average.figure for the month. The minimum temperature was 3 Cel (37F) which is nearly 7 degrees warmer than the average for the month. There has only beeb one other occasion since 1999 when the lowest temperature for December has been above freezing point. Hints I thought hard about tips for February, and came to the conclusion that for most people because of the weather the following tips are applicable. (a) Any Hard Landscaping that you want to do. If you get it done now, then you can enjoy it in the Summer. (b) Clear up any dead plants from the summer (preferably to a compost heap), and clean garden paths that are slippery due to fallen leaves and algae. Wash up empty pots and clean glass in greenhouse or cold frame. (c) Prune fruit trees (NOT plum), and late flowering summer shrubs (NOT the early ones like Forsythia and Kerria, or you will lose the flowers.) (d) Providing we do not get too much rain or hard frost overhaul flower beds containing perennials. Try and sow a few seeds. If you want to grow potatoes Partridges will have a good selection of Seed Potatoes. If you are more adventurous this year's potato day is at Stonham Barns on 13th of February frm 0930. Well farewell and Good Gardening in 2016, John Rye

CHRISTMAS EVENT The Clerk provided a verbal report on the event held on Sunday 6th December 2015. The Mayor thanked all those Councillors and staff who had assisted with the event and made it so successful. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £20,994.37 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries. ENVIRONMENT & GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 3rd December 2015 was received and accepted. FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 10th December 2015 was received and accepted including their recommendations to make grants of: i) £250 in the form of donation of items to Surviving Winter in Hadleigh and to include £5,000 in the budget should the Council wish to mark the Queen’s 90th Birthday. BUDGET 2016/17 The Clerk referred to her report included in the Minutes of the Finance & Personnel Committee of 10th December reiterating that it was hoped that there would not be a need to raise the Precept for 2016/2017 even with the inclusion of all budget bids. Councillors felt this would be good for Hadleigh residents given it was probable there would be an increase in both County and District Precepts. BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS 2016 The Clerk advised that the nomination papers for the nominee made at the last meeting had been submitted. The second nomination made would be submitted next year in order that more information could be obtained. HADLEIGH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB The Clerk reported a letter received from the Football Club advising of a request to site a telecommunications mast on the Millfield Site. It was agreed to allow the site inspection to be carried out but the Football Club should be advised that the Town Council should be consulted by the Company as owners of the land if their request progresses. Hadleigh Town Council should also be provided with a copy of the inspection results. The Football Club should also be made aware that by agreeing to the carrying out of the site inspection this does not mean that Hadleigh Town Council guarantee approving the siting of a mast. The Clerk was asked to carry out an independent check on health issues related to telecommunication masts as concerns were raised about the number of children using the sports facility. TOWN MATTERS Councillor Haylock brought to the Council’s attention that the owners of a property in the High Street had been charged a tax by Babergh District for a change of use from business to residential use which would go towards affordable housing. Councillor Grandon was asked to investigate as it was felt that this may be Section 106 monies and it was felt that this should only be charged on new builds. It had been brought to the Council’s attention that a new development had been considered exempt from paying Section 106 monies by Babergh District Council therefore the payment of Section 106 monies was becoming questionable. The Clerk would provide her with the information received in order that a report could be made back to the Council. The Mayor reported that Barclays Bank in the High Street was now closing on a Wednesday and it had been noted that the property had been photographed recently. Councillor Wiltshire reported that the town’s Police Station, although still manned, would be closing to the public in the New Year. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.35pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk

The Hadleigh Historian: Issue 32 (February-March 2016) The mix of events covered in this issue The Hadleigh Historian shows just what makes Hadleigh’s history The Hadleigh Historian so special. There have been many Issue 32 February – March 2016 Price £3 requests to publish information concerning the woollen-cloth industry that appeared during Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015. Now scripts from the costumed presentations and details from accompanying displays, researched and written by Sue Andrews, have been combined to create a series of articles. “We are the Hadleigh clothiers” (part one) gives the background history to the industry, which shows that Hadleigh was top town as far as the number of clothiers was concerned. They were the merchantentrepreneurs who organised their spinners, dyers, weavers and finishers through production from fleece to fabric. ‘Market stalls and almshouses; the story of charitable feoffments’ continues with the period 1700 to 1849, when dinners that accompanied the annual audits became a scandal with townsmen fighting for left-over scraps from the trustees’ tables that, by tradition, should have gone to the almsfolk. There was much grumbling about the state of Market Place and eventually in 1813, the Corn Exchange was erected so that corn could be sold by sample away from the hurly-burly of livestock sales. Owing to poor record keeping, some charity funds were lost and there was also difficulty in maintaining the correct number of trustees. Eventually in 1849, by an Order in Chancery, the two trusts were officially separated into the Market Feoffment and the Grand Feoffment, which administered the almshouses. Michael Ayden of Shotley Gate has contributed a piece about the Eighteen family of Benton Street who sent five brothers to the Great War. On his return to Hadleigh, William Eighteen became superintendent of the Cemetery and served on the organising committee for the erection of the War Memorial. ‘Lost buildings’ and ‘A shop in High Street’ feature a grain store and a pork butchery respectively, while three town organisations are shown having their photographs taken outside the Market Hall. And finally, the events in St Mary’s Church on Christmas Day 1641 are retold under the title ‘Rector threatened suicide: communion rails burned’, which is illustrated by the 1629 mural from the Deanery Tower. The Hadleigh Historian is on sale at Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org, where you can download a Welcome Booklet. However, if you do not have a computer and printer and would prefer a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940.

Parish Council These are the main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 13 January 2016. • Planning application in respect of land south of Dorian, Stoke Road. The Clerk had requested clarification from Babergh on Special Landscape Areas, of which Lower Layham was one. The advice was that development proposals in these areas would only be permitted where they “maintain of enhance the special landscape qualities of the area, identified in the relevant landscape appraisal, and are designed and sited so as to harmonise with the landscape setting”. It was noted that this application was for outline planning permission only; councillors had no objection to the application in principle, but it was agreed that the PC’s response should make it clear that this was subject to the eventual development fulfilling the criteria within Babergh’s Core Strategy. The response would also express councillors’ concern that additional vehicles would be turning out onto a derestricted part of Stoke Road, where speeding was already a problem. • District Council report A study was under way to look at new potential sources of funding so that discretionary spending on community support and projects could be maintained; charging for car parking in Sudbury and Hadleigh was one area under investigation. Councillors felt strongly that this would have a detrimental effect on Hadleigh High Street, especially with free car parking available at Morrisons. It was agreed that the Clerk should write to Babergh outlining the PC’s concerns. • County Council report Referring to the consultation about the future of the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service, Cllr Gordon Jones said public workshops were being held throughout the county during January and early February. The Chancellor’s Autumn Statement said that 2% of the council tax would be used for adult social care – the National Adult Social Care Levy – which would be ring fenced. This would raise around £5.4m and would mean a 60p per week increase for a Band D property. • Precept for 2016/17 The members of the Parish Council had agreed to a recommendation by the Finance Working Group that the allowances paid to the PCC (for churchyard maintenance at St Andrew’s Church), the Village Hall and the Playing Field should be increased – the first increase for thirty years - in recognition of the work put in by a small number of volunteers who worked tirelessly to keep these three cornerstones of village life going for the benefit of all. The allowance paid to each group would be increased by £400 to £1000. The money would be raised from all 240 households in the village by increasing the Parish Council’s precept from £8,500 to £10,000, resulting in an annual increase of £5.66 (approx 47p per month) for a Band D property. In this way everyone would share the burden of maintaining these key assets. The precept had not been increased for the last five years. • External audit arrangements for 2017/18 onwards The Clerk explained that the Audit Commission had ceased to exist on 1 April 2015 and, with effect from 1 April 2017, smaller Councils (with a turnover of less than £25,000) would not be subject to external audit; they would have to comply with the Transparency Code. However, an external audit could still be triggered by – for example – a member of the public requesting it. A new company had been created to take over the appointment of external auditors and the setting of audit fees for smaller authorities from 2017. The company would formally appoint external auditors on behalf of Parish Councils, much as the Audit Commission did previously, for a five year period with effect from the financial year 2017/18. This would happen automatically unless a Council decided to opt out and set up an independent Audit Panel to procure external audit itself. It was agreed NOT to opt out of the new arrangements. • Defibrillators The CPR inflatable training mannequins, associated equipment and training DVDs had now been received. All councillors and the Clerk would take part in the first training session and, following this, further sessions would be organised for parishioners. The actual defibrillator and case were due to be delivered by the end of January and would be located in the telephone box in Upper Layham, once a power supply had been installed. However, the phone box would first need to be cleaned and prepared. • Upper Layham - 30mph speed limit / new village sign The issue of moving the 30mph sign was moving forward. Suffolk CC had confirmed that the PC 44

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

would be able to see the report before it went to committee. The new village sign would be made out of oak by the carpenter employed by the Marquis of Cornwallis. It was agreed that it should simply say Upper Layham. • Old Orchard Following the consultation with residents, it had been agreed with Babergh that two fruit trees would be planted, one either side of the entrance, with the possibility of more planting in the future. However, with regard to the remnant hedge, this would be expensive to remove and there was no funding available. Babergh had therefore recommended leaving it to be coppiced every two years, which they would carry out. • Annual Parish Meeting The Annual Parish Meeting would be held on Wednesday 27 April. The format would be discussed in detail at the February PC meeting. • Annual Spring Clean It was agreed to hold the Annual Spring Clean on Saturday 27 February. The Layham Local History Group, which is operating on a shoe-string, is setting up a village archive and needs storage boxes. If you can help – please phone Michael Woods on 823798 or email: michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net. The archive is to be stored in a cupboard that has been obtained from the Hadleigh Thrift Shop. It has been adapted by Colin Brown who has built in shelves of a suitable size to store box files. The members of the Local History Group are most grateful to Colin. The cupboard is to be kept in St. Andrew’s Church, with the agreement of the members of the PCC. The members of the Local History Group will have access to it at all times – allowing them to carry out research. Layham Local History Group Every month we obtain something new that relates to the history of the village. Last month we published a photograph of Layham Church Choir in 1906. This month we share with you the latest photograph to be added to our ‘village weddings’ collection. Harry Spraggons and his sister Doris have allowed us to print this picture showing the marriage in 1921 of their father and mother Leonard Spraggons to Florence Rolfe (both Layham families at the time).

Those in the photograph (from left to right starting at the back) are: Fred Rolfe, Wal Finch, Elsie Rolfe, Ada Rolfe, Ellen Rolfe, unknown, Leonard Spraggons, Rodney Spraggons, Harry Spraggons, Mary Ann Spraggons, Florence Rolfe, Ruth Rolfe, Mary Rolfe. If you or a relative were married in Layham Church and you are prepared to share a photograph with us we would be pleased to hear from you. Contact Michael Woods on 823798. Thank you. Defibrillators Let’s hope you never need emergency treatment for cardiac arrest, but if you do, your Parish Council is improving your life chances by installing defibrillators in the village. The first is now established in the redundant telephone box beside The Queen’s Head and the second will be placed in the telephone box on Upper Street. These two locations have been used because power sources already exist – thus the major expense of providing power is avoided. If you are not familiar with ‘defibrillation’, it is a high energy electric shock given to the heart in some types of cardiac arrest. The defibrillator can be taken from its ‘home’ by any member of the public to use on someone in cardiac arrest. It is simple to use and completely safe. The crucial point is that upon cardiac arrest, every minute without resuscitation reduces the chances of survival by 10%. Local provided defibrillators can be used before an ambulance arrives. The Parish Council will be offering short training sessions shortly to help demystify the process of using the defibrillator and administering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Watch out for advertised sessions in future months. In the meantime – we need to prepare the telephone box on Upper Street to house the second defibrillator. Would you like to play a small part in this project? We need patient, steady-handed people to rub down and repaint the box. If you would be prepared to help with that work please contact Jane Cryer, the Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940 or email: layhampc@googlemail.com . We look forward to hearing from you.

Thankyou Many thanks to the young couple in Benton Street who were so kind to Bert and myself on Wednesday 13th January. They called an ambulance after he’d fallen, phoned myself and then came and fetched me, placed a cushion behind Bert and covered him with a blanket. They also provided me with a chair to sit on. I’m so sorry I cant remember your names, but god bless you both. Pat Woodberry

Layham Playgroup Goodness me it’s cold out there! We have been thinking about ways to keep warm in the winter and how we can help the wildlife around us. We have made delicious soup to eat during snack time, as well as having a special treat of hot chocolate and toasted muffins, just like Winnie the witch has in her winter story. We have made bird feeders for the birds to help them keep full and fed during the colder months when there are no berries left in the bushes. We have also enjoyed playing with our snow scene moon sand and been experimenting with water, seeing what happens when we freeze it and what happens if it is left out of the freezer. Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Government funding is available for 3 year olds and in certain cases for some 2 year olds. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Our Toddler group takes place Wednesday mornings, 9.30-11.00am and is open to all children aged 0-5years. Parents are free to enjoy a hot drink (or cold) and a biscuit while their little ones let off steam joining in a variety of activities. Children also get to enjoy a small snack and cold drink during the morning.

February – the Month for Film Contrasts! Friday 12th February at 7.30 pm

MR HOLMES (PG) Sir Ian McKellen is Sherlock Homes, now aged 92, retired and plagued by an unreliable memory. Set in Sussex during 1947, this film shows Holmes to be as cantankerous as ever as he tries to remember his final case and the woman whose memory still haunts him. However, his frustration is mainly directed at his misrepresentation in the best-selling novels by his companion Dr Watson. This film is an acting tour de force and a triumph for Sir Ian Mckellen well supported by Laura Linney, Milo Parker and Frances de la Tour among others. Friday 26th February at 7.30 pm

Kim Daniels is a shining example of how lucky we are to have our Health Service. She has been seeing me since the onset of Diabetes 2. I am one of the huggers!! She combines dedication, professionalism, honesty and commitment with good, no nonsense common sense. If you need a kick in a certain place she will do it with a twinkle in her eye but she means it! She explains statistics in a way you can understand. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, you are all that matters to Kim. All your many patients will miss you Kim, you deserve to take it easier. We all wish you the very best for the future. Mark David

Dear Sir, Its winter again and as usual we learn of the extreme pressures being experienced by the NHS, exacerbated this season by the strikes of the junior doctors. Patients registered with the Hadleigh & Boxford Group Practice are thankful that it is a good and well managed service provided by the Hadleigh Health Centre. But...is there one person who on a visit to their doctor actually has a face to face conversation or do we all visit and watch him / her demonstrate their prowess on a computer keyboard. Maggie Nicholls

Dear Sir, Through the kindness of the Hadleigh Community News, I would like to congratulate everyone connected with this year's HADS' production of Robin Hood of Wolves Wood. Thanks to the dedication of co-directors Russell Allen and the inspirational (but once in drag curiously coquettish) Trev Clarke, the production both thrilled audiences and inspired the cast. As the father of one of the performers, I could see at first hand the wonderfully uplifting experience that the process of practising, rehearsing and performing had on everyone involved. This was community theatre at its very best; inclusive, full of local references and jokes at the expense of the rich and powerful. Pantomines of this sort are just another example of the drive, imagination and determination of civil society in this great town of ours - in stark contrast to the indifference shown to Hadleigh by various official bodies. Profound thanks also to the wonderful Barbara Boyd and The Thrift Shop who sponsored the production. If you didn't come to one of the performances, you'll have no idea what you missed. Paul Simon

Recently I have noticed an increase of HGV in the town. Not from Benton Street but from Lady Lane Industrial Estate. I have observed four Artic Lorries in the past month turn right out of the Ind Estate, Lady lane junction and into town. Two have done an about turn by reversing from Angel St into Timperley Rd causing lots of congestion and two went into the High St. All appeared lost. I have written to the local Authority suggesting an information sign that turning right is for the “Town Only. Lets see if any action is taken. Tony Green

Dear Sir, I was interested to read Sue Monks letter in a recent Community News inviting readers thoughts regarding the traffic problems encountered in Benton Street. As a bus driver whose route takes him through Benton Street in a vehicle larger than average I feel qualified in making the following suggestions. Traffic Lights at either end would cause more of a problem than they would solve and a one way system utilising Hook Lane would be impractical without considerable road widening and the removal of the old railway bridge, imagine the chaos that would be caused by an oversized vehicle having to reverse out because it was too big to get through. A newly built chicane wouldn't solve the problem because one is already in place caused by the parked vehicles and the limited one way passage and passing places they create. In my opinion the current system is the best option and works very well if vehicles are prepared to cede their priority and give way to keep traffic moving, this in the main is what happens, regular drivers through the street realise that the quickest way through is to keep traffic moving even though they may have to cede right of way, occasionally somebody will charge into an clear road because they have priority, not realising that they can't get out at the end and have blocked up the road completely. There is of course another option that curiously hasn't been suggested, the problem in Benton Street is caused by parked vehicles not the vehicles using it

for what it was designed for, access to and from Hadleigh. Nobody should expect to automatically be able to park their vehicles in the road just because they live there, we have seen what a great solution to the problem would be after the passage of the two cycle races last year when parking was prohibited in Benton Street, if safety to pedestrians and a cleaner and less stressful environment is the primary cause of concern then perhaps the residents of Benton Street should approach Suffolk County Council with the suggestion to supply alternative parking nearby and put a stop to the regular chaos that is created in this beautiful street. Chris Worsfold

Dear Sir, I am Michael Hayton. I am a Hadleigh resident of nearly two years, a war veteran, a committee member of the Royal British Legion Branch and Club. I am appealing for support and sponsorship if anyone can help. On 5th April 2016 myself and two other comrades are venturing to Nepal. Our mission is to help rebuild a stricken hospital that devastated Kathmandu and the surrounding areas. The area we are going to is 13,000 feet above sea level and temperatures will vary from 30 degrees Celsius during the day and -20 degrees at night. The area is home to the legendary Gurkhas and their families who have served our nation and sacrificed themselves so determinedly for over two hundred years. I hope to prove that the people of Hadleigh and the British people in general will not forsake them following the two devastating earthquakes last year that killed and displaced so many. I have set up a GoFundMe page for anyone who wants to kindly donate or sponsor me. To donate contact me through the site www.gofundme.com/n85a4824 and help me to help them. I aim to raise £2,500 and various events are being planned so please watch this space. Michael Hayton

Dear Sir, I have been sorry to read the letters from D Baker and Mr Durrant about St Mary's. I wonder if Mr Durrant's comments date back to when the Porch Project started which has been, and is, doing so much wonderful work for the young of Hadleigh. One does understand feelings about the pews - there are, in fact, still a good number of pews in the chancel choir stalls, the north Lady Chapel, along both sides of the nave and in the south St John's Chapel sanctuary. However, since their removable (with the far from cheap wooden chairs viz Canterbury Cathedral for one example), there has been so much more that can be done with the church space for community events, not least the Porch Project which was not the reason for the removal of pews. Do come to the Farmers' Market the first Friday of the month, did you attend HADS' pantomime? Café Church on Friday mornings, the Christmas Market, etc. etc This change does not detract from the main function of the Church which is holding regular services, but enables worshipping God in a much wider sense. Just one example of being able to improve the layout for worship was the Christingle service which was so inclusive for the large number of children who were welcomed - there is the potential for so many other welcoming service settings. Interestingly, on the day I read D Baker's letter the church received a very generous cheque accompanying a letter complimenting St Mary's on what the church is undertaking in what is known as 're-ordering'. Sheila Webb

Dear Sir, The volunteer group who were hoping to arrange to have hanging baskets in the High Street this year are very disappointed to report that they are unable to do this, due mainly to the lack of time necessary to put all the arrangements in place. However, they are already working on a scheme to have flowers in Hadleigh next year. It is hoped that this project will receive as much support as the Year of the Sheep. Jane Haylock

Dear Sir, I agree entirely with the letter from Angela Wiltshire in January's Community News regarding the closure of Hadleigh and other Police Stations to the public. I would suggest the retained Fire Station in Hadleigh is used for a joint Fire/Police Station saving on cost but preserving service. This would also release a brownfield site for redevelopment, preferably for social housing. Mr Passmore is the Police Commissioner for Suffolk and driving these changes, he is standing for re election in May, so we have an opportunity to remove him if we wish. On the matter of proposed charging for car parking in Hadleigh, I think it is a completely retrograde step and will only serve to put more pressure on our High Street traders. The meeting at Babergh to discuss this matter has been postponed for a month so I would urge everyone to contact your District Councillor and express your views for or against. Stephen Laing

Dear Sir, It’s a shame Hadleigh does not have a venue with a stage as for the second year running HADS had to hire a stage (with curtains) as currently Hadleigh does not

have a venue ready to go. It’s a shame that smaller villages around Hadleigh like Whatfield, Elmsett and Bildeston has this but a big place like Hadleigh lacks a ‘ready to go’ venue with stage lighting and sound system ready set up. Maybe after the second year that HADS has done sell out panto in St Mary’s Church (the only venue suitable for a stage to be set up in) maybe it’s time that events and venues was looked in to in Hadleigh. I’m very proud to help put on events and shows in Hadleigh like the xmas lighting up, year of the sheep and variety shows and of course our pantos, It saddens me to see that Hadleigh is getting more houses and less things to do. East House is a prime example of a building going to waste. After trying to get this back for the community I hit a brick wall. Maybe something for the community could be looked in to and for people like myself who want to make Hadleigh a better place should be listened too. Trev Clarke, Chairman of HADS

MEMBERSHIP: the Club is reaching a critical point when a decision must be made as to whether the Club can continue. This will affect all activities including the furture of the christmas collections! Urgent assistance is required to keep the Club afloat (not necessarily in its present format) so that if there is anyone out there who feels that they may be able to help please contact David Stokes 01473 827226.

Pause for Thought A poem that has brought comfort and assurance to millions around the world is ‘Footprints in the sand’ by Mary Stevenson. The Bible says: ‘Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares for you.’ 1 Peter 5: 7 One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to me and one to my Lord. After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints. This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me." He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you Never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you." Greg Frost

Hadleigh Community Primary School Nursery are enjoying the rain Whilst the rain might have really made the rest of us feel a little miserable, Nursery have been making the most of it! They decided to go on a Wellie Walk on the school playgrounds to find all the puddles. They absolutely loved splashing and jumping around in the water and had lots of fun. What a great idea, Nursery! Staying Warm in Reception Our Reception classes have been busy thinking about how to stay safe and warm in Winter. Before Christmas they went carol singing around the school and raised over £175 for the UNICEF appeal to buy blankets and warm clothes for refugee children in Syria. The birds in our school woods got help with surviving the winter too when the children made pine cone bird cakes to hang from the branches! Update on Year 3 The Year 3 children are exceptionally excited about a new club they haven’t been able to do until this year – Running Club! Let’s hope their enthusiasm gives Year 3 a real boost in the Running Club scores. Meanwhile, in the classroom, Year 3 are studying a Geography topic on Climate and each class will have the opportunity to visit Wattisham weather station after half term. Update on Year 5 In Year 5 at Hadleigh Community Primary, we have been studying St. Edmund and the town of Bury St. Edmunds, both from a historical and geographical point of view, learning how to read maps, pinpoint locations using grid references and identify landmarks using Ordnance Survey symbols. Help for HCPS Gardening Club The gardening club at HCPS have worked hard to clear the vegetable beds ready for Spring planting, but are rather short on compost. If anyone has any spare, or knows of a source that could assist us, please get in touch either by email to office@hadcps.uk or telephone 01473 822161. Many thanks.

In difficult weather conditions the Stoke by Nayland green staff did well to prepare the Constable Course for the Seniors’ American Greensomes competition, which was played all on main greens. The SBN Committee has sanctioned the use of a ‘Divotend’ in competitions to aid play in winter conditions and to prevent damage to the course. The greenkeepers have noticed a real Roger Davies, Seniors’ Captain difference on both courses with Lionel Hatch, Alan Line less divots. The winners were Roger Davies and Alan Line with a creditable 34 points. In second place were Roger Fleuty and Tony Reeves with 33 points, on count back, from Alan Austin and Keith Oxborrow. Winter League The Stoke by Nayland Winter League has reached the knock out stages after 11 leagues played with the winners and runners up going through. They have been joined by the best third place teams to give 22 pairs in the final stages. The matches have to be played by the 7th February; the format is 4 Ball Betterball matchplay. Mail on Sunday Classic The Stoke by Nayland Ladies team has a bye in the first round of the Mail on Sunday Classic. The men have been drawn, at home, to play Colchester Golf Club on 6th February.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United ended 2015 with a splendid three goal win at Saffron Walden in front of a large crowd. The new year began with a narrow defeat at home to Norwich United but a convincing win then followed at Brantham with three late goals doing the business for Hadleigh. The beginning of the frosty weather came just before we entertained Gorleston but conditions were reasonably good in an exciting game which we won by four goals to two. The cold weather meant the smallest crowd at the Millfield so far this season for the Gorleston match. Our Reserves had a low key start to the new year with all matches in early January being postponed because of waterlogged pitches. After a month without action the Reserves eventually returned to league matches with a great victory at Woodbridge by three goals to one. The Thurlow Nunn youth team have also had most of their matches cancelled recently because of wet weather in early January. The youth team play all their matches in midweek under lights and spectators are welcome. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Peter Tampion and Doug Grimwade. The Ground Improvement winners was Rolf Beggerow. Both draws were made by sponsor Ken Mcghee at the Gorleston game. HADLEIGH UNITED FIXTURES First team fixtures for February begin on Saturday 6th at home to Long Melford. Then Haverhill come to the Millfield on Friday 12th before a difficult match away at Ipswich Wanderers on Wednesday 17th. Then Saturday 20th will see a long journey to Godmanchester before the months ends at home to Kirkley on Saturday 27th. The Reserves entertain Whitton on Tuesday 2nd while Saturday 6th an away match at Brantham for a difficult contest. Then Cornard are at the Millfield on Saturday 13th before Saffron Walden are entertained on Saturday 20th. A trip to Brightlingsea finishes a busy month on Saturday 27th. Our Thurlow Nunn youth team will be at home against Cornard on Wednesday 3rd. Then Wednesday 10th sees Brightlingsea at Hadleigh before Halstead are at the Millfield on Wednesday 17th. Alterations will be on the website

Looking after the Hearts of West Suffolk Upeat Heart Support starts another year, very grateful for all the fundraising that has been done both from within the group and also the outside help which has been forthcoming, from local businesses, from the Suffolk Foundation based in Ipswich and from our own local councillors who have been particularly helpful. Our fundraising is a necessary part of our group. We receive no money from the British Heart Foundation or the NHS and need these funds to keep helping all the new heart patients that will inevitably keep coming. As a self-financing charity with professional cardiac nurse and exercise instructor support, we offer rehabilitation exercise sessions, a sympathetic ear and practical help to anyone with cardiac problems, their families and carers. Sessions are held at The Delphi Club, Alexander Road, Sudbury CO10 2RR Tuesdays 9.15am to 12.30 The Newbury Community Centre, Bury St. Edmunds, IP32 6RW, Mon/Wed/Fri mornings Hardwick Middle School, Bury St. Edmunds IP333 2PD Fridays evenings For more information call 01449 774333 or 01359 232678.

Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies Golf Section Sadly the golf courses at Stoke-by-Nayland are suffering along with everything else due to the heavy rain experienced over the past several weeks. Thursday, 9th January was scheduled for a 9 holes competition to be followed by a social event. The golf part of the day was cancelled as the courses were deemed too slippery and wet to be enjoyable. However, the social event went ahead with Lady From left, Annie Major, Ladies Secretary, Captain, Betty Cox, providing Lilian Osbourne, social member an amusing and entertaining and Lady Captain Betty Cox afternoon which included a Guess the Theme Tunes quiz, a special raffle prize of a massage which she provided herself, and a tombola. Many of the ladies had baked cakes for all to enjoy and together with tea and coffee a light lunch was enjoyed by all. It was a very friendly and well attended social with approximately 30 ladies present who appreciated being inside whilst watching the rain pound against the windows.

Newton Green appoints New Manager The new manager of Newton Green Golf Club will be 27-year-old Ben Tawell. A six handicap golfer, he has performed a number of administrative roles at Rushmere Golf Club, Ipswich, where he has played in the Stenson and Hambro teams. His father Bob is club manager at Rushmere, and Ben takes up his place at Newton in the New Year. He succeeds the retired Carole List. Ben has been at Rushmere for nine years, after gaining A levels at Copleston High School, and his move to Newton means he will have to give up his parttime role as a coach at the Ipswich Town Youth Academy. With his partner Rachel, he has two young children, and has recently been looking to develop his career by attending golf management training. He said: “At Rushmere I have been able to achieve a solid grounding in all roles of the sport, from working with the green keepers, bar management and administration. “Newton Green is a club which has been moving forward impressively in recent years and the appointment gives me the chance to help the club continue on that path.”
