Babergh and Mid Suffolk are finalists in national competition ‘Council of the Year’ Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are joint finalists in a national competition to find ‘the Council of the Year’ – recognising the authorities’ innovative service improvements in supporting their communities through Covid and beyond. The joint entry by Babergh and Mid Suffolk in the iESE Public Sector Transformation Awards 2021 saw them named alongside Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and Wigan Council as finalists for the prestigious Council of the Year title.

The councils fended off competition from more than 100 other organisations nationwide to become finalists in two other categories – Customer Focus, and Asset Management and Regeneration. The overall Council of the Year award meanwhile, is reserved for those deemed ‘outstanding’ in transforming their services and creating vibrant communities – with recognition of the councils’ joint working and use of technology in helping communities to thrive and be places that their residents are proud to call home.

Cllr John Ward, leader of Babergh District Council said: “This nomination couldn’t have come in a more challenging year. The pandemic has presented us with unprecedented demands and difficult decisions over how best to support our district and its recovery post-Covid. I am delighted that we are in the running for Council of the Year 2021 and would like to thank all councillors, officers and partners working with us to help deliver our visions for our towns and communities – ensuring Babergh continues to be somewhere people are proud to call home for years to come.” The councils must now wait until the final on Wednesday 8th September, to see if they can scoop a top award.

Emmaus Suffolk first opened it’s doors in 2016 and since then have grown rapidly and now run groups and workshops on a regular basis in Ipswich and Felixstowe to support those within the local community who would otherwise be socially isolated, are struggling with long-term unemployment or are at risk of homelessness.

Emmaus Suffolk provides work opportunities and experience through their shops in Felixstowe and Ipswich, as well as in a new warehouse on the waterfront in Ipswich. Among those volunteering with Emmaus Suffolk are those who have been unemployed for a long time, and through offering volunteering roles Emmaus Suffolk gives people the chance to make a difference for themselves, in a supportive environment through work related experience and training. The ambition of the charity is to introduce to Suffolk new ways of tackling entrenched homelessness and unemployment by enabling and empowering people to help themselves through meaningful activity that will benefit both themselves and others.

Claire Staddon, Chief Executive of Emmaus Suffolk said “We are incredibly grateful to Suffolk Freemasons for their generous grant, which will enable us to offer a second community house. Our houses give people who would otherwise be homeless or insecurely housed a safe place to call home. People living within our Community Houses receive support to live as independently as possible. They can claim Universal Credit and are responsible for managing their own budgets, paying their bills and shopping and cooking for themselves. They still receive support from the Emmaus Suffolk team, but we do not have a staff member living on-on site. Our companions volunteer up to 15 hours a week in our social enterprises, giving them hands on experience, training and a supportive environment in which they can reach their full potential.

The aim of our Community House is to provide a stepping stone to help people rebuild their lives and move on to live and work completely independently.

But, like at all Emmaus communities around the UK, there is no time limit on the support offered, and our tenants are free to stay for as long as they want to.”

Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Suffolk Freemasons, Tim McCormick added “We are very pleased to be able to give our support to Emmaus, they do wonderful work supporting people and their families throughout our local community and we know that this grant will help them to further develop the vital work they offer.”

The grant from Suffolk Freemasons comes through the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which is funded by Freemasons from across England and Wales.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) COVID – MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ANSWERED There are so many mixed messages, in the media and via word of mouth, about the Covid vaccinations it is no wonder there are just as many queries about it too.

To help dispel the many uncertainties and rumours, the Practice and the PPG have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions and also provided the answers.

• I have had a text from Hadleigh GP is it from the Practice?

Yes. The text will contain your name and will be from one of the Hadleigh GPs. • When are you moving to my Priority Group?

It is not possible to tell you very far in advance. The Practice is told by NHS England when they will receive the vaccine, the number of doses and which Priority Group (PG) they should be calling.

• I am a key worker so should I be getting the vaccine?

The Practice is following the Government PGs’ guidelines. Key workers, unless you are NHS and Social Care Worker, are not currently included in any PG. • How come my neighbour has been vaccinated and they are younger than me?

This may be due to them being an NHS or Social Care Worker or they have an underlying health condition.

• When are you booking the second jab?

The Practice will be told when they will be getting the booster vaccines and when we can start calling patients to have their second jab. Rest assured the Practice will call you.

• Can I book for a jab?

You cannot book for a vaccination unless the Practice has invited you to do so.

• My friend lives in another area and there they are calling patients aged 50.

How come?

We are aware that some areas are vaccinating patients in other PG’s. Our Practice is moving through the groups (cohorts) as quickly as they can when they receive the vaccine. This is controlled by NHS England not the Practice.

• I care for my children, does this make me eligible as a carer?

No. You are eligible if you are an unpaid carer of adults, or you are in receipt of a carer’s allowance or you are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill.

Hadleigh u3a - Celebrating our motto ‘learn, laugh, live’ - come and join us!

We are all looking forward to the promised easing of restrictions from June 21 and we at Hadleigh u3a are planning to celebrate the relaunch of our regular activities with our annual Summer Party on Monday 12TH July at the Guildhall. After that our monthly speaker meetings will return to our usual venue at the URC in Market Place, Hadleigh on the afternoon of the second Monday of each month. During the covid period we have replaced these with a Zoom presentation at the same time every month.

Don’t know about the u3a? No longer in full-time employment and looking for something interesting to take you out of home and daytime television – and who isn’t after the past year? Then read on. Here at Hadleigh u3a we have over 200 members. Now we are about to cast off the shackles of lockdown, we are more keen than ever to welcome newcomers. Nationally there are well over 1,000 u3as with over 430,000 members. And almost half a million members can’t be wrong!

Founded in 1982, the u3a is a UK-wide collection of locally run groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun and enjoy exploring new ideas, skills and activities together. Apart from being friendly and relaxed it also provides the perfect antidote to the issue of loneliness for anyone who has been left feeling a bit bereft of human company over the past year. There are no age limits and no formal qualifications required or to be gained.

Membership here in Hadleigh is normally £15 (but currently only £12 per year due to reduced activities in covid period) and for that you get a monthly open meeting with a professional speaker, with the emphasis on interesting and entertaining subjects, plus the opportunity of joining one of over twenty small special interest groups ranging across a wide variety of interests. Have a look at our website for more information. We also organise theatre trips, days out to lots of places of interest and a Christmas lunch at Hintlesham Hall in December. All these are charged at cost and all the more enjoyable when shared with like-minded people.

All members also receive a quarterly national magazine called Third Age Matters, full of interesting articles and what other u3a’s are doing around the country.

The excitements and challenges of the post Covid19 and post Brexit business world Who is not looking forward to the lengthening days and warmth of spring, but also the gradual easing of lockdown rules, hoping that lives and businesses can recover some measure of pre pandemic normality? Maggie’s Walking Marathon for Amnesty International I am going to do a ‘walking marathon’ over the month of April 2021, this is a total distance of 26.2 miles (42.2 km). This is particularly challenging for me as I am disabled following a life-changing car accident 20 years ago. Although I try to keep mobile, I do find it a struggle and need two crutches to walk. I will be walking this marathon in short bursts, doing a little each day.

I have decided to undertake this challenge not only to stretch my own ability, but to try and raise money for a superb human rights organisation - I am passionate about human rights and wholeheartedly support Amnesty International in its quest to stop injustice and abuse of human beings throughout the world. I desperately need as much support and encouragement as possible as I’m not sure how I’m going to achieve this - however, my determination and sheer stubbornness are very powerful motivators!

What good progress you are making to reduce the impact of the dreadful virus.

Thanks to the onerous restrictions borne by our humans, things are looking up here at the Centre. We had two weeks of carefully controlled return to riding, much enjoyed by all the participants and volunteers. Now a break for the school holidays, and a moment to evaluate the situation, going forward.

Our grateful thanks go to the Hadleigh Town Council who responded to our cry for help, and have sent a generous grant of £2000 to help with the care of the ‘workers’ (our horses and ponies) who are out of work but not furloughed. It’s a big help and the live herd asks me to be sure to mention your generosity.

The fund raising committee is coming out of hibernation and has had its first quiz of the year (on Zoom). The Centre will be hosting a fund raising walk (of about 6 miles) on May 2nd from 10.00. You will be asked to pay on the day, rather than collect sponsorship, and after your stroll through this beautiful valley where we live, there will be refreshments for our gallant walkers. More details from our website as usual.

The hungry horses are pleased to see the grass growing, and for the weather warming up. This month let me introduce you to Roddy and April.

Both are still wearing their rugs in my photos because copy has to be sent out for publication well in advance of your receiving this blog!

Roddy is a palomino Welsh Cob gelding, who came to us last year and is learning to be Bob’s replacement. ‘Hawkhill April’, as she’s officially known, was born in 2006. She came to us in May 2015, and has been a valuable part of the pony team. She’s the largest of the ‘girls’ who live out together in a group of four. They have three paddocks to roam, and a nice sheltered yard behind the stable block where food and water is on tap. Talk about five star accommodation.....some people have all the luck. My room mate Babs and I are hoping to be allowed to work again soon; meanwhile please carry on being careful so we can get back to normal as quickly as possible. See you next month.

French’s Care Haven Hello all, I hope all of our readers have stayed in good health, physically and mentally throughout the winter and are getting ready for the spring and hopefully good times ahead.

We have been busy at French’s keeping everything going 7 days a week, as anyone with animals that they love would know, it is a full time job caring for them and the bigger and older the animal the more work is involved.

We have continued to help other small animal charities with food donations from us. Jayne who runs Suffolk Animal Rescue sent one of her team over to collect a van load of dog and cat food for their rescues and gave us a big Thank you. The Hedgehog charity we also helped with hay, cat meat and cat biscuits are called Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue. Paula who runs the rescue was very happy with our donation of food and bedding. One of the pictures is of a hedgehog being cared for by Paula at Suffolk Prickles.

The other photo is of Coco in our new recuperation shelter.

Good news for us on the support side, Pets at Home will be supporting our Charity as one of their Charities of the year, again for 2021. They were please with the way we worked with them and we ticked all the boxes for a second year of being Martleshams Charity of the year.

Not being allowed in the store with a stand last year because of covid, did make it difficult for all of their charities of the year, so for the chosen ones to have a second shot of it, was a great thing for Pets at Home to do. Saying that, there is no time to relax, as our outgoings are never ending, so we are happy to say we now have our licence for our 100 club, where we can give money prizes out monthly, while raising money for our animals. We will keep you posted for details of our start date and you can always take a look on our Facebook page, or email me for more information.

One of the things we are still looking out for is a large summer house, so please put the word out there, it would make a huge difference to the vulnerable people we help and for our volunteers.

Some Thank You’s are in order, to Turners Tool Hire in Sudbury, Jeff the owner has helped us with the use of a two man hole bore. The job our trusted volunteers, John, Colin and David had to do would have been a long job, come nightmare without that hefty piece of equipment. Thank you to Horsemat Ltd for their kind donation of rubber matting, which has gone into our recuperation shelters.

Volunteering for us can be as little as an hour or more a week, it is totally up to you, it gets you out in the fresh air, keeps the body active and you are surrounded by wonderfully good natured animals......and people.

News from Kersey School Otters (Reception, Years 1 and 2) With a return to school Otters Class have been very busy.

We have continued our learning about plants and seeds by starting our very own cress experiment, placing the seeds in different places and using different variables to see how they grow. In our class vote, most of us thought that the seeds that have water and sunlight will grow the best and we are checking every day to see what happens!

We have also celebrated World Book Day and had a whole school celebration where we were able to make our very own wooden spoon book character. It was so much fun to design and create whilst also sharing our favourite books with each other. The children in Otters loved the opportunity to work with the Badgers and Owls.

It was wonderful to celebrate our mums on Mother's Day and all the children in Otters had a go at sewing a beautiful flower to decorate the card they made. The children were very proud of their creations and were so eager to make them with such care for their mums.

Badgers (Years 3 and 4) “Once upon a time …” Badgers class went ‘Into the Forest’ with our author for the term, Anthony Browne. We have enjoyed his ‘twist’ on a traditional tale and written our own versions using tips and tricks from his books. We have also shared other Anthony Browne books that we like. In art, we have examined his illustrations, discussed and used warm, cool and complimentary colours to respond to the book.

For Mothering Sunday, we wrote kenning poems about the important women in our lives, made and decorated cards with heart and flower designs and presented them with daffodils and chocolates kindly donated by St Mary’s church. Our creativity continued when, as a school, we worked with buddies to make World Book Day characters from wooden spoons. The variety of designs and characters were incredible and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed learning together. Harry Potter, Mr Stink, the Gruffalo and others will decorate our school entrance and remind us of the wonderful time we had.

The Romans is our topic and we have learned about their invasion, Boudicca’s revolt and Hadrian’s wall. The class have been really keen to learn about this period of history and have developed their understanding and explaining skills further. To finish we will investigate the ‘Romanisation’ of Britain.

Owls (Years 5 and 6) Today, Owls had to create a recipe that the chef of Ernest Shackleton’s infamous Endurance Expedition might have come up with… Did I forget to mention – a recipe he might come up with after months of being trapped on a weather-beaten coastline (off an island off Antarctica along) with a frostbitten 20+ crew to support?

Yes, Owls have been living the life of intrepid explorers and heroic survivors in English whilst simultaneously learning about the Geography of Antarctica throughout their topic. Sprinkle a bit of science on top and they are now experts in how the classification of organisms, plants and animal kingdoms has developed over time.

Like Badgers, the Owls created beautifully framed Kennings to honour their mothers and produced a spectacular array of wooden-spoon-characters to celebrate World Book Day. Following the theme of creation I have been inspired by some brilliant pieces of writing and artwork too.

In conclusion, not even two weeks back and all Owls have embraced their return to school with enthusiasm and a hard-working attitude. Brilliant!

Worship Council The Collective Worship Council of Kersey Primary presented their wonderful teachers, Teaching Assistants, Midday Supervisors and Caretaker with a bunch of flowers and a bar of chocolate to thank them for their care and nurture during lockdown and in celebration of Mothering Sunday this weekend. All the children were presented with a posy of daffodils and chocolate from St Mary’s Church to take home as a thank you from Staff and Governors for all the parental support for their children and for Kersey School during the past year.

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk On 15th March the Prime Minister published one of the most important policy documents of recent years: the Government’s ‘Integrated Review’ of foreign policy and defence. We may have spent much of the last year at home, with international travel foregone, but it remains the case that a huge part of protecting our national interest lies beyond these shores. I was delighted that the Integrated Review set out a very ambitious program, strengthening existing ties – e.g. through NATO, so crucial in countering Russia adventurism – but also looking to build new alliances, especially in the growing markets of Asia.

A ‘tilt’ towards the Asia-Pacific region could be particularly significant in the post-Brexit context, where we now have the ability to strike independent bilateral trade deals that fit our distinct economic circumstances. Effectively we have an entire new lever of economic policy and that must be focused on those markets likely to deliver the greatest increase in trade. As such, it was pleasing that the PM announced his visit to India next month to strengthen ties with the world’s largest democracy. The UK will also seek to join the TransPacific free trade agreement. These remain difficult and challenging economic times due to the pandemic, but as we emerge, building new export markets will be a key way to drive the prosperity that delivers well paid jobs for local people.

A highlight of the review was our commitment to science and technology at the heart of our vision of ‘Global Britain’. We will be building huge new capacity in cyber warfare, where the conflicts of the future are likely to be fought. We have also committed to being a ‘scientific superpower’ – and with our success in developing a Covid vaccine we have surely demonstrated our great potential to build on our long-standing history of achievement in this field.

It may still be some time before visits abroad are again commonplace.

Nevertheless, it’s right that we set out how we see our place in the world, and a strong, optimistic global vision based on free trade and strong defence is surely the ideal place to start.

During our excavation of the 1580s Long House we found many interesting objects which are now in our on-site Museum. Do have a look on our website where Roger, from our excavation team, has put together 3 short booklets about the finds – A Miscellany of Findings – with photographs and a short historical summary of each find.

Many of these are related to farming and some also reveal a wonderful insight into the social history of the day. The photo shows a firing mechanism from a flintlock pistol which was found in the ruins of the Long House, possibly from a Brown Bess rifle used by the British Army from 1722 – 1832.

We are currently preparing for the working party to re-laminate the earth floor of our Meeting Room in the Barn. We have removed the top inch of the old floor and now have 140 kg of clay which was dug from our site, drying in the polytunnel. This will be crushed by hand to a powder and mixed with sand, straw and water to make the new surface. Made with environmentally friendly materials sourced locally, it will last for many years and will also help to keep the Barn cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.

Bildeston Primary School Chinese New Year KS2 children started their week before half term celebrating Chinese New Year. In Science they made fireworks in jars, experimenting to see if water would mix with oil. They also looked at the food Chinese people would eat when celebrating the Luna New Year. They were then set the task of creating their own Chinese meal to celebrate and they definitely embraced the challenge!

Robin Class In English Robin class have been reading a story called the Dragon Machine. In the story the boy builds a dragon machine so he can lead the dragon’s home. Robin class made their own flying machines – the more imaginative the better! Robin Class also worked so hard on their activity days during remote learning making pancakes, tall towers and boats proved to be extremely popular!

Also some messy science before half term for Robin class who investigated the viscosity of different liquids by seeing how long it took them to drip down a slope.

Liquid soap, syrup and honey took a long time, but most children found that ketchup took the longest.

KS2 Art In KS2 art lessons before half term the children made figurative sculptures using tin foil. The different poses represent a different show of feelings. Well done everyone!

In PE, Owls and Kestrels were set the task of designing a walking route in their local area. Dojo points were awarded to those who produced the most interesting routes. Well done Ashton, Mia D and Freya for being so creative.

Romans Continuing their work on the Romans, Kingfisher class cooked their own pizzas at home and also produced some Roman board games called Latrunculi or Ludus Latrunculorum –meaning The Game of Mercenaries.

Tiger Reports The children in Owl and Kestrel class have also continued their work on chronological reports by writing their opening paragraph and then a paragraph about the appearance of the tiger.

News from Whatfield CEVCP School I have been teaching since 1994 having done a B.Ed. course at Homerton College. Nearly all of my teaching career has been in Suffolk with three years spent at the British School of Manila early on in my career. My previous post was Head of School at a Junior School which was federated with an Infant School and catered for mainstream children alongside two specialist units for children with Education Health Care plans who needed more than mainstream education could offer.

Many of these children were from out of catchment.

My start at both Whatfield CEVCP and Bildeston was not quite as I had envisaged but didn’t come at a huge surprise during these unprecedented times. Both schools offered provision to Key Worker and vulnerable children, and online learning to those at home during lockdown. I really have already gained a great sense of community within the Whatfield School. I hope that going forward once restrictions are lifted I will have the opportunity to meet many more people from the village and further afield. To celebrate World Book Day children took part in an extreme reading competition, they sent in photos of themselves enjoying their favourite books in the most unusual places. Here are our winners. Each of them awarded with a certificate and a new book to read.

Acorns Have been writing their own versions of Three Billy Goats and are enjoying being back together. They have also been taking part in the keeping active campaign.

Saplings We have enjoyed being back together and being able to play with the older children again! We have put our minds to a 'Mastermind' PE lesson and worked well together to try to problem solve!

Oaks Have been using Talk for Writing to improve their characterisation and as part of this they have learnt to retell a story of Aladdin using story maps. The children have taken on an Active Challenge for the month of March and are taking part in different forms of exercise every day.

Bentwaters Cold War Museum 2020 might be a year many will want to forget and none more so than the museum community and in particular the smaller ones.

At Bentwaters Cold War Museum located at the former American air base near Rendlesham just north of Woodbridge, the doors have been closed to the public since the end of the 2019 season.

The museum is housed in the original United States Air Force Command Post, a large bunker with three foot thick walls, narrow corridors and a single entrance and not designed with the problems of access during a pandemic!

Not only was the museum unable to receive visitors, but the support organisation, the Bentwaters Aviation Society which is normally a vibrant group, had to cancel all meetings and events. Everything came to a standstill.

But not to be defeated the society and museum came up with some ideas to help get through lockdowns and restrictions. There have been regular updates to society members with information and entertainment. Facebook and website updates for the public. A photo shoot with limited numbers outside with social distancing in the summer proved very popular and an online photo competition for the members at Christmas attracted a good number, including American veterans from across the pond!

The encouragement and kindness of those who support the museum has been tremendous and very much appreciated by the volunteers who work to keep it maintained and ready to reopen as soon as permitted.

The biggest challenge has been funding with little income received in 2020. The chairman and museum manager, Graham Haynes said “2020 was a challenging year for us all but with the dedication of our amazing staff, we still managed to complete a few projects and survive the year. Hopefully the spring will bring the opportunity to open our doors again and we look forward to welcoming you all to see what we have been up to. There has been a great deal of work going on in the background, so I want to thank the volunteers for all that they have been doing, both at the museum prior to lockdown and from home when they couldn't get in.

I sincerely hope you all stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you at Bentwaters, as soon as we are able to do so."

Like many other museums the difficulties are having a real effect and at Bentwaters there has been a great deal of thought put into how the museum might reopen. An online booking system, controlled entrance and exit, limiting numbers, more ventilation are all under consideration, but it all means more expense and reduced income. A funding programme is soon to be launched to give supporters an opportunity to help where it is needed.

Above all else though the museum is determined to open and share the history of the twin bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge. And in this year that history has a significant milestone as we commemorate the arrival of the Americans in 1951 and the huge impact they had on this part of Suffolk.

Communication has never been so important

By Hearing Care Centre Clinical Lead Audiologist, imon Myhill RHAD FdSc FSHAA A big part of communication is being able to hear well and to contribute to conversation whether it is one to one or in wider groups. Being asked to stay away from friends and family has been tough on us all and we have all come to understand the value of phone calls, video calls and social media. Even though we have spent less time with our loved ones than we ever have done, the ability to communicate well in those limited opportunities has been increasingly important.

However, now that vaccines are more prevalent and there is the promise of restrictions easing, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We all look forward to socialising once again with loved ones in gardens, homes, pubs and restaurants. We might even be able to attend a live entertainment event with a crowd before the end of the year. This of course means that the challenges to communicating in those demanding listening situations will make a return as the world around us gets nosier again and I want people to be ready to enjoy life to the fullest once we are able to again.

If you have noticed a deterioration with your hearing, then we recommend in the first instance having a simple hearing check. For most people hearing loss is a very gradual process and it can be other people who begin to point it out first.

Lockdown has also heightened our awareness of these issues. For example, we’ve watched more TV than we ever have done, at times it can be noticeable when one member of the household prefers the volume up louder than the rest!

The good news is we can help with an initial assessment to establish whether there is a problem with your hearing or whether it could be something as simple as blocked ears.

You will see documents, videoed interviews and get the chance to question the suspects yourself all brought to you through the magic of 21st century technology. At the end, the teams will decide who-they-think-dunnit, submit their own reports and then watch the filmed summing up and conclusions from the indefatigable Inspector Sheerluck.

And April also sees the publication of an exciting new book celebrating Sudbury Dramatic Society – The First 100 Years, written by Sara Knight with Liz Cole, and the help of an extensive archive kept at The Quay Theatre, added to by interviews with past and present members and full of memories and photographs.

It is well known that SDS converted the Quay Theatre building themselves in the late 1970s, from a riverside warehouse, and that it now operates as a separate charity. Less well known is that the society was formed from a base at the Victoria Hall in Prince Street, and also performed in the old Gainsborough Theatre, (now the Infinity Nightclub), and for convalescing WW1 soldiers in Belle Vue House.

Nowadays SDS is a still major contributor to The Quay Theatre contributing in the region of £50k annually, but productions have been on tour, fundraising in locations as exotic as Westwood Park, Great Maplestead and Spain.

The book has been published with the aid of grants from Sudbury Freeman’s Trust, and from Councillor Jack Owen. Sudbury Dramatic Society – The First 100 Years will be available initially via www.sudburydramatic.com for £12.99.

As I put pen to paper I realise that it is a year to the day since the first lockdown. Hasn’t life been different, but now more and more of us are having the vaccine, so hopefully we will all be able to meet again soon.

Spring has arrived and we are all enjoying a burst of yellow in the gardens and the birds are singing cheering us all up and the days are getting longer too.

We have had two committee meetings on Zoom, making plans for when we can start meetings again, we will of course keep all members informed. In the meantime all the committee would like to wish you a very Happy Easter. Take care.

Plastic, plastic everywhere… is there another way?

We’ve all seen the plastic bags, bottles and food wraps that litter the town and countryside. But more seriously, we mostly don’t see the bulk of the plastic waste that is either burned or finds its way to the sea. So, many of us are trying to cut out the single use plastics - using a refillable water bottle or reusable coffee cup, using your own shopping bags or buying unwrapped fresh produce.

But it often feels a bit hopeless as a single individual. For this reason, members of HEAT have decided that we want to help build a Plastic Free Community here in Hadleigh.

Plastic Free Communities is an initiative of Surfers Against Sewage, who have put together a practical action plan to help local communities work together to reduce the amount of single-use plastics that we use and dispose of and so reduce the plastics ending up in the oceans. That’s why we will be working together with Plastic Free Manningtree – and hope to unite communities along the River Brett.

To be recognised as a plastic free community, we need to get the support of individuals, the council, some retailers and community organisations: together we can make a real difference!

It’s almost impossible to get rid of all the plastic in our lives, but we want to minimise those plastics that we can avoid and to help one another to do so more and more. Several local retailers already offer plastic-free alternatives and more are working on it, so we can encourage them and benefit the local economy too!

The Really Wild Zoom meeting 7.30pm 8th April!

In the meantime, we are really excited to be welcoming one of the founding trustees of WildEast - the ambitious project to return 250,000 hectares across East Anglia to nature to help reverse the decline in wildlife across the region. The concept is that we can all be part of this exciting project by challenging ourselves – all of us – across farming estates, industrial estates, housing estates, and schools, gardens, allotments and churchyards to contribute 20% of whatever we have back to nature.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club By the time this April issue comes out the clocks will have gone forwards and it will be Easter, a whole year has gone by since the garden club has met as a group, but hopefully that will not be the case for very much longer. Early spring is a busy time in the garden and now is a good time to put a mulch on the soil to keep in moisture and to suppress weeds, the worms will do all the work so there is no disturbance to the soil. Leaf mould is good for this and for a few years I tried to make my own by putting leaves in a black sack with some holes punched in the bottom and leaving them behind the shed. When I opened them a year later instead of the 'lovely crumbly sweet stuff' that Monty Don waxes lyrical about I always ended up with a wet smelly mess. However the year before last I made a box shaped leaf store with wood and chicken wire, the leaves have been sinking down all this time but still looking quite dry on the outside, a few weeks ago I removed the outer layer and, amazingly, I had at last, the 'lovely crumbly sweet stuff' which went straight onto the raspberry bed, it's only taken five years to get it right!

April is the month to sow crops outdoors such as broad beans, peas, radishes and turnips, any tomatoes sown last month should be potted on. It is a good idea to put supports around border plants that tend to flop later in the year so that they can grow through them without disturbance. I have used spent raspberry canes for this, they can be kept outside in a sheltered place and they are sturdy enough to do the job, they last for a few years and when they finally start to dry and snap break them up and pop them in the compost bin.

Many house plants benefit from repotting every few years and now is a good time to do it. Only move the plant to a pot that is one size bigger than the one in which it is currently growing and use a houseplant compost or one that is appropriate for a particular type of plant, for example cacti or orchids, as the season goes on then begin to reintroduce a feeding regime. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

“Rabbits running, playing and grooming each other is a lovely sight but sadly they are often neglected because people assume they are easy to look after and don’t realise they can live for ten years. Rabbits should be neutered and receive yearly vaccinations, regular worming and health checks.

They need a spacious exercise area attached to a roomy hutch as a place to rest in, NOT A PRISON. They are not solitary by nature and happily live in pairs or groups.

Unlike Bugs Bunny, rabbits do not just eat carrots! The diet should consist of 80% good quality hay, small amounts of commercial feed and leafy greens.

They DO NOT like being picked or carried around so children should play with them at ground level. If you understand that having a rabbit is NOT an easy or short term commitment, then please offer a home to a rescue rabbit after Easter.” That just leaves enough space for Karen’s contact details when you have finished your chocolate eggs - but make sure to keep them away from all the dogs including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

You can judge a book by its cover Recently I read book that I had picked completely by mistake. As many of you will know, at Suffolk Libraries we have a limited number of withdrawn stock that we have for sale and these shelves are just as popular with us Librarians as they are with customers. On my rounds shelving a while back my eye was caught by a book spine and cover that looked identical in style to two books I already owned.

Hoorah, I thought - a third by the same author. So, I bought it. It wasn’t until I took it off my shelf at home that I realised it wasn’t the same author at all. But it was similar, I enjoyed it very much and it did have a very comparable feel. This is where book cover designers have become very clever and more and more you can group books together in the vein of, ‘If you liked this, then you will probably like this,’ and it works. So, if you are looking for something new to read, I can highly recommend hopping onto the Suffolk Libraries site and having a browse and let yourself be led by judging a book by its cover.

Don’t forget to reserve your books as normal or make use of the select and collect service we are providing and say hello as you come and pick up your books from Hadleigh Library, it is always great to see you.

RETAIL MOTOR INDUSTRY FEDERATION

If you are elderly or terminally ill and would like some help please contact us. The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems, and sometimes injustices, faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, thereby saving a great deal of human sadness and animal suffering. The Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis whose determination and dedication has ensured that the manifest need is fully addressed.

The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. To this end it works in partnership with owners to overcome any difficulties that might arise. A national network of over 17,000 community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner.

A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital - volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited.

The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets.

Arrangements are made between owners and the Trust well in advance, so owners do have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Emergency cards are available on request.

When a pet is in the Trust’s care either short term or long term because the owner is in care, the owner is kept in touch with visits, if possible, or regular photos and letters.

Hadleigh Walkers We hope that everyone has been able to do some walking over the past few months even though the joy of continual local walks has worn thin for most of us.

Hopefully the restriction on meeting up as a large group outdoors will be coming to an end shortly and the intention of this note is to present our thoughts for the coming year and get everyone in the mood to meet up again.

We will continue walking every second Saturday of the month. However, as restriction will hopefully be eased on 17th May (which is after the second Saturday) so, just for May and all going well with the “Roadmap”, we are proposing to run the walk on the third Saturday - 22nd. Assuming everyone is keen for an interesting walk somewhere different we are proposing to repeat a similar walk round Stutton, starting and finishing at the Community Centre car park. This walk has some interesting terrain, contains woods, streams and of course the River Stour. We’ll worry about availability of pub refreshments nearer the time.

Details of our route, meeting times etc. will be announced in the May edition of the HCN and on the website nearer the time.
