Babergh communities to benefit from funding boost of more than £200,000 Communities across Babergh have received a funding boost totalling more than £200,000 to be used for local projects including a much-needed car park in Lavenham. Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is collected from developers when they build new properties in Babergh, with the aim of ensuring local infrastructure keeps pace with housing growth. With CIL funding of £190,000 now approved, work can commence on revitalising a plot of land on Water Street, Lavenham, which was used for gas works between 1872 to 1937. The site will now benefit from a twenty-four space car park, which will include two charging points for electric vehicles - a positive step forward in protecting the local environment from the effects of climate change. There is also scope for further charging points to be added to meet the developing needs of the community. Following overwhelming support from the local community, works will be carried out by Lavenham Parish Council, who will also contribute £48,000 of their local parish council Neighbourhood CIL fund towards the project. Cllr Clive Arthey, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “CIL monies can be a long-term beneficial funding source which makes a real difference to residents in Babergh. These payments ensure housing growth in our district enables communities to thrive, not just now, but for many years to come. “I am pleased that this round of funding has allowed us to make a significant contribution to a project which will not only preserve local heritage but will also accommodate electric vehicle charging points to tackle the effects of climate change.” Other areas to receive CIL funding during this spending round include East Bergholt, successfully securing over £14,000 towards essential improvement works at Constable Memorial Hall. A joint bid for £8,000 from Suffolk County Council and Capel St Mary Parish Council to provide a bus shelter on Thorney Road was also given the green light. Lavenham Sinfonia 2020 Season The Lavenham Sinfonia begins its 2020 Season with a series of concerts in which Beethoven figures prominently. 2020 is, of course, the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 1770 and the Sinfonia will be marking the occasion by playing not only the Violin Concerto but also the composer’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Its first concert is, however, firmly fixed in the romantic era. It is being held at Lavenham Church on the 19th April 2020 starting at 19:00 hrs and will open with the Petite Symphonie by Charles Gounod. Gounod is best remembered for his operas particularly Faust but this charming short symphony composed in 1885 has always remained popular and has kept a place in the modern repertoire. It is in the classical four movement format and is scored for a wind ensemble of 9 instruments. The symphony is followed by a performance of the 5 Ruckert Leider by Gustav Mahler. The 5 songs were composed separately between 1901 and 1902 and were not intended to form a song cycle, only having a common link through the poetry of Friedrich Ruckert. However they are now usually performed together with the soloist choosing the order in which they are sung. The soloist is the mezzo-soprano Daniela Bechly. Ms Bechly has sung a variety of operatic roles in opera houses across Europe but now focuses on the development of the Pimlott Foundation that she established in the name of her late husband. The final piece in the concert is Dvorak’s ever popular 8th Symphony. Composed in the summer and autumn of 1889 this cheery and lyrical symphony draws its inspiration from the Bohemian folk music that Dvorak loved. It is scored for a large, diverse group of wind and brass instruments including the Cor Anglais (an instrument that was to figure so strongly in the slow movement of the following 9th Symphony) as well as percussion and strings, the piece is in the usual 4 movements. Please put the date in your diary and come along to support the orchestra and enjoy some fine music playing. Please also give some thought to becoming a patron (£75 per year) or a Friend (£35 per year) and assist one of the few orchestra’s playing live music in Norfolk and Suffolk. Hadleigh Sea Scout Group After 30 years of service to the Scout Association Barry Dallas, Group Scout Leader has been forced to give up his post, due to an apparent change of rules whereby any management role can only be held for 5 years with an extension to 10 years. Barry has been GSL for 25 years after taking over from Jimmy Wilding when the HQ, Osborne Hall opened. Barry has been a stalwart of the group and GSL for 25 years, 5 years as a cub scout leader, and has given his all to ensure the group has been run within the rules and values of the Scout Association for the benefit of all young people of Hadleigh and surrounding areas. At this time, I feel it is also opportune for me to hand over as Akela to my Assistant Cub Scout Leader, Vicky Ormes. Between us Barry and I have given 55 years to Scouting in Hadleigh and whilst it is with heavy hearts, we know we have an excellent team of leaders and helpers who are more than capable of continuing the good work in the Hadleigh Community. We would like to thank everyone who has been part of the Hadleigh Groups over the years, Leaders, Committee Members, Parents, Town Organisations, Supporters in Hadleigh and all the young people who have hopefully benefitted from Scouting in Hadleigh. It is with great regret that the committee of the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, and the organisers of the Hadleigh Show, have to announce that the 181st Hadleigh Show, due to take place on 16th May 2020, is cancelled. The organising committee feel that, despite there being no formal guidance for large events to be stopped, it would be irresponsible of us to encourage people into large gatherings until the threat of COVID-19 is under control and manageable. We are obviously hugely disappointed not to be able to showcase agriculture, rural activities and put on a lovely day out for our incredible supporters but we feel in the current situation this is unavoidable. We will be working closely with our exhibitors, trade stand holders, sponsors and visitors to ensure that the cancellation process is as smooth as possible but ask for understanding and patience in, what is, an unprecedented situation. We are enormously grateful, and humbled, by the huge levels of support we have received from all of our exhibitors and traders who had, once again, given us a fully subscribed show and we would like to publicly thank all of them for such fantastic support for this years show and for past and future shows. We will be back to the planning stages for the Hadleigh Show to be back in 2021 and will be working with all of our incredible supporters and wish all of them a safe 2020. Lavenham jewellery business shortlisted for award The directors of Lavenham based, Jonathan Lambert Ltd are delighted to announce that the business has been shortlisted in the category of “Bespoke Jewellery Retailer of the Year” at the forthcoming “UK Jewellery Awards” to be held at The Tower of London on July 2nd 2020. Stour Valley U3A 30th Anniversary A speaker meeting took place on Wednesday 11th March when Master Beekeeper, Jeremy Quinlan, talked about the contest between bees and flowers to gain benefit from the relationship. Events and diary dates Monster Walk on 3rd June as part of U3A National Volunteer Day 30th birthday party on 5th August - Constable Hall East Bergholt Interest Groups Our 3 mile and 5 mile walking groups set off each month to keep fit using local footpaths. A 10 mile walking group is coming soon. Members of our european travel group are going to Dubrovnik, Puglia and India during the next twelve months. The very popular garden visits group has organised coach outings to many parts of the eastern region over the summer months. There are 40 learning and activity groups for members to join. So says Peter Cutts, local amateur wildlife photographer and nature fan â&#x20AC;&#x153;we have such easy access to the countryside right on our doorstep, there is always something to enjoy and look forward to, like this young heron at the millpond â&#x20AC;?. Unlike many other towns Hadleigh has a wide network of public footpaths and permissive routes enabling easy access to the local countryside. Peter loves to get out on foot or on his bike, grabbing his camera and enjoying the changing seasons and great wildlife right here in Hadleigh and the surrounding area â&#x20AC;&#x153; Spring is my favourite time, you have the promise of lovely warm days ahead and the amazing beautiful deep greens everywhereâ&#x20AC;? With climate change and uncertain weather patterns it is really important that we all do what we can for wildlife. With this in mind why not try and get more in touch with nature at home in your own back garden by making some wildlife friendly improvements in 2020? These 5 simple ideas will make a huge difference to the wildlife in and around your garden: 1) Plant nectar rich plants and ideally have something flowering in every month of the year. 2) Stop using chemicals in the garden â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a wildlife friendly garden will look after itself. Remember weeds are only plants that WE consider to be in the wrong place, insects love them wherever they are. 3) Adding a clean water source of some kind to a garden is one of the best things you can do for wildlife, be it a water bath or a small pond. 4) Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be too tidy in the garden, leave some areas for wildlife to shelter in. Where you can why not plant a native hedge, leave a pile of cuttings or leaves to rot, add a log pile or maybe even a bug hotel. 5) If you do feed the birds please remember that bird feeders need cleaning out and washing regularly to prevent the spread of disease. Breeding birds need invertebrates to feed their young so a wildlife friendly, chemical free garden rich in insects will also encourage birds. Hadleigh & District Flower Club At the last meeting in March we were delighted to welcome Pat Barton from Attleborough. She has travelled nearly all around the world by continent and this was reflected in her flowers which included delightful orchids, gerberas, delphiniums and double roses, shown in the photo are sunflowers, clematis and carnations, Pat brought summer into the hall, after a refreshing cup of tea/coffee and raffle, we wished her a safe journey home. Bad News I am afraid - In April the demonstrator was to have been Nick Grounds but unfortunately and with much regret the committee has cancelled Nick due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Life at The Shelley Centre The wettest Spring on record has made even us, up here on the hillside, miserable. The field gates are churned up to destruction and the poor horses look totally fed up. Our Mum, Lyn, has had the devil of a job keeping their spirits up. Of course I’ve had plenty of extra work too, which I thoroughly enjoy: any rained off rides come indoors to learn about stable management and visit me for a short session improving their strength and balance on my big black back. I hear we are now in Lent, preparing for the most important festival of Easter. It doesn’t mean much to me, but I understand that humans are supposed to exercise some self control during these 40 days! Ha, does that mean less cake at snack time? Hope not, how about everyone who reads this doing a bit more of something, like my friend Hazel? She held a pancake party on Shrove Tuesday, raising £77 for The Shelley Centre, thank you so much! Although Hazel lives in Bury St Edmunds the nice thing for us is she still visits, as she worked here recently, capping off her almost 50 years as a RDA volunteer. We’ve had more support from Essex University in the form of seven volunteers coming here on their Charity Day and helping Lyn. Good job dear students, hope you enjoyed yourselves. How can we be thinking about the start of summer already? I know I’m a lot younger than most of our volunteers but even I find the time passing too quickly for comfort. Let’s hope March and April see the end of all the storms and that the land can start to recover and our riders can start to be outside again. Weaving the way for the next generation Continuing the legacy of Sudbury Silk Stories, four primary schools from the Sudbury area are to learn about the Sudbury silk industry and the process of weaving, as part of a new project. With funding from the Arts Council and Babergh District Council, £14.8K and £2k respectively, over 100 local school children will take part in the new project called Creative Young Weavers. The initiative, which began a few weeks ago, builds on existing relationships and momentum from the recent National Lottery Heritage Funded project Sudbury Silk Stories, celebrating the return of the Sudbury Silk Festival in 2021. Four schools across the Sudbury area will take part, including Cavendish CEVC Primary School, St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary, St Gregory CEVC Primary School and Woodhall Primary School. Specialised workshops will provide a unique opportunity for the pupils to explore weaving and expand their knowledge of their unique Sudbury silk heritage. Working with textile artist Frin Arnold they will produce individual and group woven samples, working with silk waste material from the local mills. Frin Arnold, said: “It’s always exciting to be part of a public project like this, working with the community and local schools to inspire creativity whilst being mindful of the environment. “I know Sudbury and its heritage is very special for many people across Suffolk and I’m looking forward to working with our young people to get them excited about weaving and creating something from scratch.” Cllr Derek Davis, cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, said: “The creation of the Sudbury Silk Stories film and last year’s silk festival was a fantastic way to showcase a key part of Sudbury’s heritage attracting more than 5,000 visitors, involving local schools and partners. As the only retail shop in the village, Philip Altoe’s decision comes as a blow to this unique magazine: unique, as I am unaware of any other village in Suffolk that has its own independent local-history publication. However the main outlet has now gone and as costs have never really been covered by sales, I am going to call it a day. When it comes to Coronavirus there is no point beating around the bush. We face the most profound societal, economic and - above all - public health challenge since the Second World War. Quite simply, the national interest and the direct interest of everyone of us – and of all our loved ones, young and old - is now best served by following to the letter the advice from our Chief Scientific and Chief Medical Officers, implemented by the Government and as follows. First, if you or anyone in your home has a high temperature or a new and continuous cough, you should stay at home for 14 days; 7 days if you live alone. If at all possible, you should not go out even to buy food and essentials. Instead, you should ask others for assistance with your daily necessities. The exception to that is for exercise, but even then you should keep at a safe distance from others. If it is not possible to receive deliveries at home, you should do what you can to limit your social contact when you leave the house to get supplies. Even if you or anyone in your household do not have symptoms, the Government has updated their advice. They are advising people against all unnecessary social contact with others and all unnecessary travel. People will need to start working from home if they possibly can, and should steer clear of pubs, clubs, cinemas and restaurants. Additionally, we should use the NHS only when we really need to. This advice is directed at everyone, but it is especially important for the over-70s, for pregnant women and for those with some health conditions. Above all, I know that coronavirus will be a source of profound anxiety to all of you, but this crisis is also bringing out the best in human nature, with many examples of friends, neighbours and community groups rallying round to help each other. Firstly I would like to say, I am wishing all our readers good health physically and mentally while we are all going through such difficult times in this country and around the world. What I would also like to ask is that you still think about all the organisations and charities like French’s who need your help and support. Now more than ever we at French’s need you to sponsor one of our animals and offer some odd hours helping us as a volunteer. Being outdoors in a beautiful natural setting with only one or two people at the farm working with the animals is something that is good for our health, soul and mind, along with the physical benefits of working in the open countryside. Each person who comes along has individual tasks to do, that usually just involves you doing something to help with the daily care of our animals. My sweet little cocker spaniel Lucy, who is our therapy dog, is generally in the mix of things as well, as she likes to be involved, bless her. It has been much harder than I thought it was going to be starting from scratch at our new base, regarding all the work that was needed and still needs doing at the farm, it has been one challenge after another and has pushed me to limits I have not felt in many a year. Without all the fencing that we have had to put up and facilities we are still trying to raise money for, the heavy clay soil has been a huge challenge in its self for us and the horses. I personally cannot wait for summer days and for the jobs ahead to be completed, so that we can concentrate on what we do best, which is give our animals lots of TLC and for us to start our projects back up helping and working with those who have anxiety/mental health problems and disabilities. Good news is we have been accepted as Charity of the year by Pets at Home in Martlesham. Our dates in the store are as follows: April 18th/19th July 18th/19th August 15trh/16th September 19th/20th October 17th/18th. In June and December there will be more days, as this is the stores main event months though out June and December. I am looking for help on any of these days, for someone to come along and offer their time for a couple of hours on our stand in the store. Should the NHS be paying for your care? It is well known that, if you have your own capital above a certain threshold, Social Services wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fund your care fees. What is less well known is that in certain circumstances, the NHS will pay and this funding is not means-tested. This means that, if you qualify, the NHS will pay all your care costs, whether the care is provided at home, in a care home or a nursing home. Because you qualify based on your health needs, your financial means are irrelevant. In order to qualify, you have to prove that your primary need is a health need. Therefore, if you just need care because you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look after yourself independently any more, you are unlikely to qualify. In assessing you, the NHS will be looking at whether your needs are sufficiently complex, unpredictable or intense to justify them funding you. In order to make that assessment, they will look at twelve different â&#x20AC;&#x153;care domainsâ&#x20AC;? which include cognition, behaviour, mobility and continence. If it is felt that, for example, you have a â&#x20AC;&#x153;severeâ&#x20AC;? need in two of those care domains it is likely that you will receive funding. We advise clients on their prospects of success at an assessment, as well as representing them at the assessments and any subsequent appeals. Support for our council tenants Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have introduced measures to prevent the future eviction of any council tenant who cannot pay their housing rent as a direct result of COVID-19. In addition to a range of measures announced yesterday to protect the council’s workforce, residents and services over coming weeks, the councils have now moved to reassure council tenants that they will not lose their homes due to loss of income because of coronavirus. While the Prime Minister today announced emergency legislation to protect private renters from eviction, the councils pledged to work with tenants too, in order to protect them and relieve current anxieties around the impact of the virus. Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for housing and communities Cllr Julie Flatman said: “We understand how anxious people are and want to work with our tenants to ensure they can still cover their bills as a result of coronavirus. We always encourage tenants to get in touch as soon as possible if they are struggling to pay their rent as we can offer a range of support and advice.” Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for housing Cllr Jan Osborne said: “We don’t want anyone having the additional worry of losing their homes if they are unable to work as a result of coronavirus and are facing financial hardship as a result. We will always support people who are experiencing difficulties – but now more than ever. Library Life: Interesting Times We find ourselves living in interesting times. At the time of writing this piece, the libraries are still open but by the time it is published, well, no-one can say for certain at what stage we will be. But, whether our physical buildings remain open or not, we are still there for you, providing, entertainment, knowledge and information. We have adapted over the years to changing times and so, if you find you are having to stay at home, we can still be a community together. From the comfort of your home you can access e-books, audio books, films and music - all with your library card; just visit the Suffolk Libraries website to explore all the options. With fiction from all genres, you can find valuable escapism when things feel difficult. Non-fiction provides opportunities to keep feeling active of mind and learning, from new craft skills, to history, nature or how to look after your peace of mind. One of the real jewels of reading though is that it has been proven to increase empathy as it builds the ability to see things from different points of view. These are, indeed, interesting times and under such pressures humanity can either be found wanting or flourish but I like to think that most of us will take the time to think of others as much as ourselves. Wills and that Virus Like many businesses, we have to change the way we work while the pandemic continues. The Will Business has a significant number of elderly clients, and we would not wish to put them at additional risk by disregarding government advice and visiting them in their homes. For this reason we are suspending all visits to clients, including any to hospitals and care homes. But, we shall continue to help clients by writing wills and lasting powers of attorney. Suffolk Rockets Netball Club On the 7th March our adult first team competed in the Suffolk County Tournament, this was our first time at this competition and the ladies did great finishing 3rd, the competition was extremely experienced and strong, but they played some very impressive netball. If you are an experienced netball player looking to join a new club please email us as we are looking for players who are experienced at playing in high divisions in local leagues to join us. We are excited to announce our new Netball session 'BEE Netball' starting September 2020. BEE Netball is a programme all about friendship, inclusion, fair play and playing together. It is not about how good of a netball player a child is, its about how hard they try to 'bee'. Bees themselves exemplify many of the values that netball instils, they are active, hand working, have a real sense of belonging, and that's exactly what we hope our own Bees (young players) develop as they are introduced to our fantastic sport! There was just enough warmth in the March sunshine for a hardworking cat to enjoy a nap until the garden was filled with chatter and laughter. A happy group of volunteers including Mother (she should know better) disturbed my slumber as they discussed a generous donation. The Roundabout Magazine has kindly given SESAW a cheque for £100 which will provide new heat pads to keep the animals warm, whatever the weather. More good news came from Support Adoption for Pets, the charitable arm of Pets at Home. The Colchester store has also chosen SESAW as it’s Charity of the Year for 2020. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak we are closed except by appointment or for emergencies. Our fundraising events are suspended and we ask supporters to kindly hold onto donations of goods until the situation improves. No doubt our talented volunteers will be knitting and sewing during the coming months ready for future sales. We have some very pretty cats awaiting new homes but please consider my fellow felines that are black or black and white. Most of them are very affectionate, not “superior”, as Kenneth the Chihuahua describes me, just because I recline in high places. He doesn’t realise I look out for buzzards circling overhead but none of us saw a sparrow hawk until it swooped recently. That’s the third dove it’s taken this year. As dusk approaches Kenneth makes his way cautiously indoors, not in his usual confident, I'm fireproof, manner. Polstead Art Group In 2021 the “Polstead Art Group” will be celebrating 20 years in existence. It was started by a group of likeminded friends who enjoyed painting and who wished to spend time together in a friendly atmosphere, trying to improve their artistic technique together. We are currently not a group who have any trained artists giving tuition; we learn from one another, so new members who wish to join us, do not need to feel intimidated. We are a group of mixed abilities some of whom have more experience than others, and are always willing to assist others in developing their own technique. More importantly, one of the main reasons the group still exists, is that it gives individuals the chance to meet with others, giving everyone the chance to make new friends. The “Polstead Art Group” meets on a Tuesday afternoon from 2pm until 5pm at the Polstead Village Hall. Each week we ask for a payment of £1, which goes towards all expenses. The first week is free, so anyone can come and see if the group is something they would enjoy. Half way through the afternoon we have a break for refreshments. We have recently had discussions over expanding our Art and Craft knowledge. We would now like to invite all likeminded people who enjoy doing any other crafts such as lace making, embroidery, felting, etc, basically any craft that can be transported to the village hall. It is hoped that this will give people the opportunity to learn another craft themselves, as well as having a chat. So why not come along and give it a go. By the time this ‘Pause for Thought’ is published, because of the Corona Virus situation, our communities may be operating differently with the elderly and the vulnerable in isolation for many weeks. Already we’ve been able to see how human beings react to a crisis, there may have been an emotional response of heightened fear or a stoic resilience, there may be an urge to ‘stock up’ with essentials as well as compassion provoked to care for those who need extra support at this unpredictable time. As a church leader, it has been wonderful to see the community spontaneously investigating how to support one another practically and emotionally. It is understandable for those in and out of the faith community to ask, “If there is a God, why does God let something like this happen?” There are no easy answers to that question. The Christian faith honestly says; God does not always tell us why specific things happen, but in Jesus Christ, we know that the answer is not, ‘he does not care’. It says that in Jesus we see the clearest picture of God, he did the inexplicable, he touched lepers, something nobody did. He gave hope to the oppressed and he fed the hungry. This Easter, it’s unclear whether public meetings will be possible, but if they are why not investigate what the ultimate reason was behind why God came to earth, and why his compassion for the vulnerable is shown most clearly at Easter. Down to Earth ...with Dave Just when you think the wet weather is finished some more rain arrives putting most of the outside jobs on hold. At least in this corner of the country we have not suffered with the terrible flooding that other areas have had. Clearing up after the non-stop flooding must be very heart breaking and difficult to handle, at least when we do get a bit of drier weather we can get on with things. The broad bean plants grown in the greenhouse and hardened off in the refurbished cold frame on the allotment have been planted out in neat rows with their open ended flowerpot covers as protection. I am sure that they appreciate the protection this gives them from the wind and it does make watering each individual plant easier. Even with all the rain we have had, anything newly planted does need watering till it gets established. The first early potatoes have been put in, being very careful not to damage the tender shoots by chitting them indoors on a windowsill. They are planted quite deeply and earthed up straight away so that if we do get a frost then they should survive. The greenhouse is overflowing with all sorts of small plants growing on and seeds germinating in covered heated trays, there is always something to move from one place to another. The three planted up hanging baskets are a bit of a nuisance as they seem to get in the way, but will be worth it as we will have an early display in a month or so when they are moved to hang outside, it should be safe to cut all the old flower heads off the hydrangeas now. Cut back to a strong fat juicy bud, remove any damaged stems if the bush is getting a bit overcrowded, but if you do, remember you are removing possible future flowers. If the plants are in tubs like ours then they would benefit from some sort of feed, all the rain we have had will have washed a lot of nutrient from the soil, I tend to favour one of the soluble feeds like Miracle Gro or Phostrogen, whichever is on offer at the garden centre. I have been taken to task over the brief mention last month of the purchase of the rose 'Just Joey', I should have explained that it was a present for my daughter in celebration of the 21st birthday of her son, surprisingly called Joey. The rose now sits proudly in her garden in a large pot, needless to say I will be keeping an eye on it. Over the past few days we have been busy planning various visits to events and open gardens etc. for the coming year. A few that are worth a visit include the Spring Fayre at Semer All Saints church on 25th April, Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh on 6th June, 'Hillside' Union Hill Semer opening for the NGS on 21st June and, of course, the Hadleigh Show on 16th May. Good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene is the message of the day. But how do we respond, beyond the Government guidelines, within our communities? Here are a few ideas: • Look out for neighbours who might need to self-isolate. Could you offer help to ensure that they get the supplies that they need? • Look out for elderly and vulnerable members of the community in particular. Do they know where to turn, in the event that they need support? • Could you create a buddy system keeping in contact with each other by phone? • Look out for those fearful of coming out of their homes. The newly refurbished Siam Gardens, including a weaving structure and statue, have been unveiled as part of an official opening at Weavers Piece in Sudbury. Representatives from Babergh District Council, Sudbury in Bloom community group and Sudbury Town Council gathered at Siam Gardens in Sudbury on Saturday 14 March to officially unveil the weaving themed dye garden. Regeneration works include a new loom structure, dog statue named after the famous Talbot dog on the Sudbury Crest, wooden carving of a silk worker and seasonal dye plants used as part of the silk dying process. The project has been supported by Sudbury Town Council and Sudbury in Bloom, and was funded by a Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Pocket Park Grant of ÂŁ25,000. Officer time and project management by SB Surveyors, Sudbury Town Council and Babergh District Council make up an additional ÂŁ7,500 of match funding. The re-design pays homage to Sudburyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich silk heritage, and further connects the garden to other areas. Designed, with the community, by Herbaculture CIC Contractors and various partners including John Moore Tree Services, Escar UK Bronze, ActivLives, A J and SB Surveyors it is hoped the garden will be enjoyed for years to come. Kersey Mill Newsletter Restoration Update Last month we reported that work to reinstate the three pairs of water driven stones at Kersey Mill was underway and we were about to embark on building the associated stone furniture and crown wheels. The tuns to the three sets of stones have now been built using local pine and all three pairs of the water driven stones are back in place. There is, however, plenty of work in progress. We need to make horses, hoppers, shoes, damsels and scrapers to complete the furniture. The crown wheel, which runs the middle stones, has been re-toothed using Copper Beech from the adjoining orchard. Sadly the Copper Beech that once stood on the riverbank died a few years ago, however we arranged for the timber to be milled with the intention of it being incorporated within crown wheels. The timber dried very nicely and it is now being put to good use as teeth for the two crown wheels. Re-toothing the first crown wheel has proven to be a complex and painstaking process: first you need to plane the material to a consistent size then blank, create 2 shoulders, one on either side and cut 4 cheeks at various angles to match those of the crown wheel. Then plane to a tight fit, so that just a light hammer sets the tooth home. Once all the teeth are in position, spacing can commence using dividers, by marking the centre line and profile. Finally, remove the teeth and plane the front profile, using the shoulders to retain the wedges. The wedges are created in a very similar way: replace two teeth and wedge, repeat 104 Assembling the first times until all teeth are in position then cut wedges crown wheel to fit the inside and outside rim. We are now ready to repeat the entire process for the second crown wheel. Further works to the governors and line shaft have also commenced. Test Drive On Shrove Tuesday we decided to put our stone machinery to the test! The grain was kindly donated by Chaplin Farms of Nedging and, for the first time in approximately 110 years, our refurbished set of stones actually produced flour! Kersey Mill’s first stone ground loaf of bread was baked here on site at The Miller’s Kitchen by Charlie de Lara-Bell, who is an artisan baker. We are very much looking forward this becoming a regular occurrence, once we’re in production. There is still a lot of work to do The first baked loaf using our until we can finally say that Kersey Mill is stone ground flour milling again, but nevertheless Shrove Tuesday was quite a momentous day.
