New Cycle Parking facilities for Hadleigh Four Sheffield Steel cycle parking stands with planters will be placed around Hadleigh town centre at key locations for locals and visitors. The stands are paid for from a Government fund to support cycling. In October Hadleigh Town Council and Hadleigh Cycling Club invited cyclists to meet up and consider how bike parking could be improved in the town. There was broad agreement on the need for more visible and better-quality parking. “It is terrific when in a plan comes together so quickly”, commented Tim Collins, Chair of the Club’s working group. “It is pleasing to find Suffolk County Council, Babergh District Council and the Town Council working together to ensure that we have everything in place early in the year, just as we see an upturn in cycling numbers.” The Town Council has been in contact with an organisation which has agreed to maintain the plants, and is exploring the possibility of the planters being sponsored to fund the on-going planting, and also to promote local businesses. The HCC working group regards cycle parking as just one element of the overall strategy. The next element is the production of a map showing cycle routes around the town and the surrounding countryside. The Club has been following the guidance from British Cycling about social riding and organised events and will update the website. Whilst it appears that we will be able to return to social rides in the next month, it is unlikely that the Junior Club will be able to run this year. A decision about the Gayford Flyer sportive will be made in the next month and a provisional date of Sunday, 12th September has been agreed, if it goes ahead. Up to date information about social rides, events and local routes can be found on our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub or visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

The site of the former Toppesfield Corn Watermill in Mill Lane has been in the news recently with a hole appearing necessitating the closure of the public footpath to Tinkers Lane. The water of the River Brett has through many centuries been used as a power source for different types of mills. In modern times there were two corn mills working until the mid-years of the 20th century. Toppesfield Mill, and the Bridge Street Mill which was located just on the town side of the Iron Bridge. A watermill at Toppesfield was recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086, and it seems that there was a continuity of corn milling on this part of the river until a major fire in 1954 destroyed the mill which stood directly opposite the red brick Toppesfield Mill House. Toppesfield Corn Mill had a brick ground floor with two further floors above, timber framed and a white painted weatherboarded exterior finish. The roof was plain tiled with red clay tiles. The mill was considerably enlarged during the early 19th century on the down streamside side with a wide extension and included works to the sluice system and the mill race where the waterwheel was positioned. The present foot bridge was alongside this extension. During the mid-19th, the mill was using four pairs of French stones for milling. One of these stones can be seen today in the Market Place. It was at 3.50 pm on 25th February 1954, a normal working day with the mill packed with corn and meal, that the diesel-powered equipment suddenly stopped running. George Lewis, one of the employees went to the engine room to investigate, upon opening the door he was met by a wall of flame. The old mill, being a maze of rooms, milling areas and stairways combined with a brisk westerly wind, caused the fire spread rapidly. Hadleigh fire brigade responded, followed by the Nayland, Needham Market and Ipswich brigades. The crews faced not only the fierce heat and flames but received electric shocks via live cables when using their hoses, to the asbestos clad internal walls exploding in the heat sending shrapnel in all directions. The considerable smoke produced keep low by the wind, swept across Benton Street causing visibility problems. The children leaving the Station Street School saw the smoke and quickly made their way to see the fire. The next day revealed all the timber framing above the brick ground floor consumed by the fierce fire. Toppesfield Mill, owned by the Wilson Corn & Milling Co. Ltd. was never to be rebuilt after centuries of milling. Image ref: Watermill 3. Gale Pryor standing as

Green Party Candidate for Hadleigh Town Council and Suffolk County Council I have lived in Hadleigh for almost 20 years and brought up my family here. I am an accountant by profession and was a founding shareholder and finance director for a construction company initially based in Hadleigh. I am now fortunate to have more time on my hands so I am able to volunteer in areas that interest me. I have always believed in being an active member of my community and have been on many organisational committees over the years from playgroups and schools through various sports clubs to currently HEAT, Hadleigh Cycling Club and Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh. I think it’s important to have a range of voices in local politics, and now is the time for me to stand up and bring a fresh female perspective to strengthen our town and build a fair community that benefits all. I would be an independently minded Green, not told how to vote, so I would be free to speak on behalf of the town and residents. Local councils have declared a climate emergency and an ecological crisis but I want to see some action on this not just words. I am part of HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) and I would like to build on their work by being an active Green member in Hadleigh. Since 1889, the Salvation Army has had barracks The Hadleigh Historian in Hadleigh but during the early years, its The Hadleigh Historian April - May 2021 Price £4 presence in the town was not always Issue 63 appreciated. Every Sunday, when the band led its soldiers from Station Road, down High Street to George Street corner where a service was held, youths would cat-call and attempt to disrupt the procession. However, in 1905, when the founder General William Booth made a visit to Hadleigh, there was a large crowd in Market Place, where banners of welcome had been hung across the street. ‘The Salvation Army on parade’ is based on pictures from the different sources, which show a thriving organisation. Jeff Ward of Colchester contributes another of his ‘Stories from the War Memorial’, this time concerning Frederick Branch. Before being posted to the Western Front in France, Frederick found himself in Dublin on Easter Monday 1915 fighting the Fenians as he called them and later forming part of the escort that arrested Constance Markievicz, a rebel leader. Jeff always carries out considerable research for his articles but for copyright reasons on this occasion was unable to have a painting reproduced in The Hadleigh Historian that shows Frederick so search online for The Arrest of Countess Markievicz, 1916 and know that one of the soldiers depicted came from Hadleigh. The occasional series ‘Round the back’ has an unusual photograph of Angel Street showing old timber-framed buildings awaiting demolition while new houses are being erected by Hadleigh Urban District Council in their back gardens. Another picture feature comes from the Colin Bull collection, which was sent in by his daughter Jane Richardson, who lives in France. It shows Hadleigh Bridge, also know as the Iron Bridge, and the efforts made during the 1970s and 1980s to strengthen and then rebuild this northern entrance to the town. ‘The rise and fall of Richard Vanscolina’ is the result of this name catching my eye while reading old newspapers online. Richard was not born locally but as a newlywed, he and his bride, from a Hadleigh milling family, lived in a prestigious residence in High Street. Richard became an active member of several organisations: for the cricket club, his batting averages were not very good. He assisted at the start of Hadleigh’s Annual Amateur Athletic Sports by allowing the events and the evening promenade concert and firework display to be held on his grounds. Richard also undertook his duty serving as a parish officer while his business as maltster gave men employment and custom to local shopkeepers and suppliers. What a pity it all cam to nothing in 1878. Issue 63 is now available price £4 at Avis the Newsagent and The Idler in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer. A one years subscription 96 issues and postage) costs £30 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BGT (01449 740673)

French’s Care Haven Hello all, I hope all of our readers have stayed in good health, physically and mentally throughout the winter and are getting ready for the spring and hopefully good times ahead. We have been busy at French’s keeping everything going 7 days a week, as anyone with animals that they love would know, it is a full time job caring for them and the bigger and older the animal the more work is involved. We have continued to help other small animal charities with food donations from us. Jayne who runs Suffolk Animal Rescue sent one of her team over to collect a van load of dog and cat food for their rescues and gave us a big Thank you. The Hedgehog charity we also helped with hay, cat meat and cat biscuits are called Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue. Paula who runs the rescue was very happy with our donation of food and bedding. One of the pictures is of a hedgehog being cared for by Paula at Suffolk Prickles. The other photo is of Coco in our new recuperation shelter. Good news for us on the support side, Pets at Home will be supporting our Charity as one of their Charities of the year, again for 2021. They were please with the way we worked with them and we ticked all the boxes for a second year of being Martleshams Charity of the year. Not being allowed in the store with a stand last year because of covid, did make it difficult for all of their charities of the year, so for the chosen ones to have a second shot of it, was a great thing for Pets at Home to do. Saying that, there is no time to relax, as our outgoings are never ending, so we are happy to say we now have our licence for our 100 club, where we can give money prizes out monthly, while raising money for our animals. We will keep you posted for details of our start date and you can always take a look on our Facebook page, or email me for more information. One of the things we are still looking out for is a large summer house, so please put the word out there, it would make a huge difference to the vulnerable people we help and for our volunteers. Some Thank You’s are in order, to Turners Tool Hire in Sudbury, Jeff the owner has helped us with the use of a two man hole bore. The job our trusted volunteers, John, Colin and David had to do would have been a long job, come nightmare without that hefty piece of equipment. Thank you to Horsemat Ltd for their kind donation of rubber matting, which has gone into our recuperation shelters. Volunteering for us can be as little as an hour or more a week, it is totally up to you, it gets you out in the fresh air, keeps the body active and you are surrounded by wonderfully good natured animals......and people. We are still crying out for a big sponsor/investor (with a big heart) to come on board with us, so if that person is you, or you know of anyone who may be able to help, please get in touch with me, my details are below. Communication has never been so important By Hearing Care Centre Clinical Lead Audiologist, imon Myhill RHAD FdSc FSHAA A big part of communication is being able to hear well and to contribute to conversation whether it is one to one or in wider groups. Being asked to stay away from friends and family has been tough on us all and we have all come to understand the value of phone calls, video calls and social media. Even though we have spent less time with our loved ones than we ever have done, the ability to communicate well in those limited opportunities has been increasingly important. However, now that vaccines are more prevalent and there is the promise of restrictions easing, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We all look forward to socialising once again with loved ones in gardens, homes, pubs and restaurants. We might even be able to attend a live entertainment event with a crowd before the end of the year. This of course means that the challenges to communicating in those demanding listening situations will make a return as the world around us gets nosier again and I want people to be ready to enjoy life to the fullest once we are able to again. If you have noticed a deterioration with your hearing, then we recommend in the first instance having a simple hearing check. For most people hearing loss is a very gradual process and it can be other people who begin to point it out first. Lockdown has also heightened our awareness of these issues. For example, we’ve watched more TV than we ever have done, at times it can be noticeable when one member of the household prefers the volume up louder than the rest! The good news is we can help with an initial assessment to establish whether there is a problem with your hearing or whether it could be something as simple as blocked ears. To book an appointment for a hearing assessment please call 01473 230330. You can find us locally at Health By Design in Hadleigh and at Sudbury Community Health Centre. For more information visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk

Plastic, plastic everywhere… is there another way? We’ve all seen the plastic bags, bottles and food wraps that litter the town and countryside. But more seriously, we mostly don’t see the bulk of the plastic waste that is either burned or finds its way to the sea. So, many of us are trying to cut out the single use plastics - using a refillable water bottle or reusable coffee cup, using your own shopping bags or buying unwrapped fresh produce. But it often feels a bit hopeless as a single individual. For this reason, members of HEAT have decided that we want to help build a Plastic Free Community here in Hadleigh. Plastic Free Communities is an initiative of Surfers Against Sewage, who have put together a practical action plan to help local communities work together to reduce the amount of single-use plastics that we use and dispose of and so reduce the plastics ending up in the oceans. That’s why we will be working together with Plastic Free Manningtree – and hope to unite communities along the River Brett. To be recognised as a plastic free community, we need to get the support of individuals, the council, some retailers and community organisations: together we can make a real difference! It’s almost impossible to get rid of all the plastic in our lives, but we want to minimise those plastics that we can avoid and to help one another to do so more and more. Several local retailers already offer plastic-free alternatives and more are working on it, so we can encourage them and benefit the local economy too! If you want to get involved in the Plastic Free Hadleigh project or find out more about HEAT please leave a message on our page on Facebook or email Hadleigh.HEAT@hotmail.com. We’d love to hear from you! The Really Wild Zoom meeting 7.30pm 8th April! In the meantime, we are really excited to be welcoming one of the founding trustees of WildEast - the ambitious project to return 250,000 hectares across East Anglia to nature to help reverse the decline in wildlife across the region. The concept is that we can all be part of this exciting project by challenging ourselves – all of us – across farming estates, industrial estates, housing estates, and schools, gardens, allotments and churchyards to contribute 20% of whatever we have back to nature. If you’d like to hear more, again email Hadleigh.HEAT@hotmail.com and we’ll ensure you get an invitation.

Hadleigh Walkers We hope that everyone has been able to do some walking over the past few months even though the joy of continual local walks has worn thin for most of us. Hopefully the restriction on meeting up as a large group outdoors will be coming to an end shortly and the intention of this note is to present our thoughts for the coming year and get everyone in the mood to meet up again. We will continue walking every second Saturday of the month. However, as restriction will hopefully be eased on 17th May (which is after the second Saturday) so, just for May and all going well with the “Roadmap”, we are proposing to run the walk on the third Saturday - 22nd. Assuming everyone is keen for an interesting walk somewhere different we are proposing to repeat a similar walk round Stutton, starting and finishing at the Community Centre car park. This walk has some interesting terrain, contains woods, streams and of course the River Stour. We’ll worry about availability of pub refreshments nearer the time. Details of our route, meeting times etc. will be announced in the May edition of the HCN and on the website nearer the time. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us from the website contact page or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Suffolk CC Bramford to Twinstead electricity transmission network upgrade National Grid plans to reinforce the electricity transmission network between Bramford substation and Twinstead, south of Sudbury in Essex. The reinforcement is needed to overcome a constraint on this part of the network and increase the capability of the network to carry new clean green energy that is proposed in East Anglia, very much in support of the Government’s targets to achieve net zero. They have contacted landowners to arrange access for surveys and are preparing to start a non-statutory public consultation. Their proposed transmission upgrade will impinge on the southern tip of Hadleigh, close to the existing pylons. However, they will cross the neighbouring Cosford and Stour Valley resulting in a significant visual impact to the landscapes there. This his caused much opposition with MPs and authorities across Norfolk Suffolk and Essex collaborating to express their concerns. Armed Forces Champion I am delighted that the Town Council has signed up to The Armed Forces Covenant and for elected Cllr Frank Minns as their first Armed Forces Champion. I am the Armed Forces Champion representing Suffolk County Council on Suffolk’s Armed Forces Covenant Board. I look forward to working alongside our Mayor in ensuring that those living in Hadleigh and elsewhere, who serve or who have served in the UK Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. This year’s Armed Forces week celebrations are planned to be held in Hadleigh should government COVID guidelines allow. The events will include: Tuesday 22nd June – Raising of the Flag ceremony Thursday 24th June – Community thank you event Saturday 26th June – Royal British Legion annual summer fete Babergh is co-ordinating this event and they hope to run a ‘window competition’ for local businesses, engage with the Press, offer discounts for military personnel throughout the week. Highways (Drainage) – Calais Street Suffolk has been allocated some extra funds for highways repairs totalling £27.2M, for the 2021/22 financial year. Last month it was announced that an extra £2m has been allocated to help tackle the worsening flood problems being experienced across the county. This additional funding has allowed for works to be carried out in Hadleigh, most notably those on Calais Street; I have been calling for this issue to be rectified throughout this council. Sale of Chilton Woods land for future development On 9th February it was announced that the £35m sale of a significant part of the development site at Chilton Woods is now complete. The Chilton Woods site had been allocated for development in Babergh District Council’s Core Strategy and was granted outline planning permission by Babergh District Council in 2018. Taylor Wimpey has purchased a portion of the site and will deliver 1,150 new homes, a quarter of which will be affordable for rent or shared ownership. The housebuilder will also provide a village centre with shops, a pub and a community hall, large areas of new community woodland, land for a new primary school and pre-school, sports pitches, allotments and play areas for young people. Cycling Stands Suffolk CC has been working alongside Babergh, the Town Council and Hadleigh Cycling Club to find suitable locations for cycle parking. The four agreed locations will be at: Outside Ipswich Building Society on the corner of High St/Angel St Outside the Pedal House, alleyway just round from The George PH On the corner of Church St near house number 11 Maiden Way, alleyway off the High Street. Babergh DC The Mill Race In February’s HCN, Jan Byrne wrote a very informative article regarding the [ill-fated] history of the Mill on the Brett. On 18th March, I met with officers from Babergh and residents on to discuss the issues and plan for rectifying the sink holes which have appeared on the Tinkers Lane footpath in the vicinity of the previous Mill Race. There will be a two-phase approach to this problem: firstly an excavation to discover the extent of the sinking, followed by in-filling to make the area safe. This will be followed later by planned designed works for a permanent repair with the possibility of a new watercourse feature at this location. HVO Fuelled vehicle Fleet- reducing carbon emissions Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding of £50,000 has been approved to fund the installation of a new Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) Fuel Tank at the council’s Chilton Depot in Sudbury. This will progress plans for the council’s fleet, which currently generates just over a quarter of Babergh District Council’s total carbon emissions, to switch to the fuel – enabling a direct reduction in CO2 of up to 90%. This proposal forms a major step in the council’s Carbon Reduction Management Plan, which outlines how net zero carbon emissions aim to be achieved by 2030. Although initial expenditure is required, switching to HVO will result in lower maintenance costs and a longer engine life for the council’s public realm, housing, and waste and recycling collection vehicles. Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh. As well as our all new Alice Collins clothing we have also had many new styles from our favourite suppliers including Brakeburn and Fenella. Proving popular online is the 2 piece Fenella linen set. This comes in denim, white and beige perfect for the warmer weather as linen is a fantastic material being breathable to the skin. We also can’t wait to show off our new range of leather sandals. They have a comfy thick sole featuring a braided jute detail finished with two navy leather straps crossing over the foot. These are defiantly going to be a wardrobe favourite this season. As always I order many pieces I love myself. One of my favourite new pieces to arrive has to be the Sterling silver Reeves & Reeves bee and honey comb necklace, this can be worn every day or can be saved for a special occasion. This is a nod to the great outdoors and sits beautifully with many necklines. You can judge a book by its cover Recently I read book that I had picked completely by mistake. As many of you will know, at Suffolk Libraries we have a limited number of withdrawn stock that we have for sale and these shelves are just as popular with us Librarians as they are with customers. On my rounds shelving a while back my eye was caught by a book spine and cover that looked identical in style to two books I already owned. Hoorah, I thought - a third by the same author. So, I bought it. It wasn’t until I took it off my shelf at home that I realised it wasn’t the same author at all. But it was similar, I enjoyed it very much and it did have a very comparable feel. This is where book cover designers have become very clever and more and more you can group books together in the vein of, ‘If you liked this, then you will probably like this,’ and it works. So, if you are looking for something new to read, I can highly recommend hopping onto the Suffolk Libraries site and having a browse and let yourself be led by judging a book by its cover. Don’t forget to reserve your books as normal or make use of the select and collect service we are providing and say hello as you come and pick up your books from Hadleigh Library, it is always great to see you. COVID – MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ANSWERED There are so many mixed messages, in the media and via word of mouth, about the Covid vaccinations it is no wonder there are just as many queries about it too. To help dispel the many uncertainties and rumours, the Practice and the PPG have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions and also provided the answers. • I have had a text from Hadleigh GP is it from the Practice? Yes. The text will contain your name and will be from one of the Hadleigh GPs. • When are you moving to my Priority Group? It is not possible to tell you very far in advance. The Practice is told by NHS England when they will receive the vaccine, the number of doses and which Priority Group (PG) they should be calling. • I am a key worker so should I be getting the vaccine? The Practice is following the Government PGs’ guidelines. Key workers, unless you are NHS and Social Care Worker, are not currently included in any PG. • How come my neighbour has been vaccinated and they are younger than me? This may be due to them being an NHS or Social Care Worker or they have an underlying health condition. • When are you booking the second jab? The Practice will be told when they will be getting the booster vaccines and when we can start calling patients to have their second jab. Rest assured the Practice will call you. • Can I book for a jab? You cannot book for a vaccination unless the Practice has invited you to do so. • My friend lives in another area and there they are calling patients aged 50. How come? We are aware that some areas are vaccinating patients in other PG’s. Our Practice is moving through the groups (cohorts) as quickly as they can when they receive the vaccine. This is controlled by NHS England not the Practice. • I care for my children, does this make me eligible as a carer? No. You are eligible if you are an unpaid carer of adults, or you are in receipt of a carer’s allowance or you are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill. Bildeston Primary School Chinese New Year KS2 children started their week before half term celebrating Chinese New Year. In Science they made fireworks in jars, experimenting to see if water would mix with oil. They also looked at the food Chinese people would eat when celebrating the Luna New Year. They were then set the task of creating their own Chinese meal to celebrate and they definitely embraced the challenge! Robin Class In English Robin class have been reading a story called the Dragon Machine. In the story the boy builds a dragon machine so he can lead the dragon’s home. Robin class made their own flying machines – the more imaginative the better! Robin Class also worked so hard on their activity days during remote learning making pancakes, tall towers and boats proved to be extremely popular! Also some messy science before half term for Robin class who investigated the viscosity of different liquids by seeing how long it took them to drip down a slope. Liquid soap, syrup and honey took a long time, but most children found that ketchup took the longest. KS2 Art In KS2 art lessons before half term the children made figurative sculptures using tin foil. The different poses represent a different show of feelings. Well done everyone! In PE, Owls and Kestrels were set the task of designing a walking route in their local area. Dojo points were awarded to those who produced the most interesting routes. Well done Ashton, Mia D and Freya for being so creative. Romans Continuing their work on the Romans, Kingfisher class cooked their own pizzas at home and also produced some Roman board games called Latrunculi or Ludus Latrunculorum –meaning The Game of Mercenaries. Tiger Reports The children in Owl and Kestrel class have also continued their work on chronological reports by writing their opening paragraph and then a paragraph about the appearance of the tiger. Extreme Places to Read World Book Day The challenge to read in the most unusual or extreme place for World Book Day! Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

As Easter approaches, our SESAW volunteer, Karen, who specialises in looking after our rabbits offers some seasonal advice. “Rabbits running, playing and grooming each other is a lovely sight but sadly they are often neglected because people assume they are easy to look after and don’t realise they can live for ten years. Rabbits should be neutered and receive yearly vaccinations, regular worming and health checks. They need a spacious exercise area attached to a roomy hutch as a place to rest in, NOT A PRISON. They are not solitary by nature and happily live in pairs or groups. Unlike Bugs Bunny, rabbits do not just eat carrots! The diet should consist of 80% good quality hay, small amounts of commercial feed and leafy greens. They DO NOT like being picked or carried around so children should play with them at ground level. If you understand that having a rabbit is NOT an easy or short term commitment, then please offer a home to a rescue rabbit after Easter.” That just leaves enough space for Karen’s contact details when you have finished your chocolate eggs - but make sure to keep them away from all the dogs including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. 2 Months To Go...? How long do you think it takes to change your life...? Research shows it’s around 66 days - approximately 2 months - to make a new habit stick. The last year has been like no other in recent history. We’ve almost been under house arrest. Bad habits have set in! By definition, a habit is an action which is formed through repetition and once formed they tend to stick, particularly the bad ones...! Boris has announced the roadmap out of lockdown, the Covid vaccination programme is going great guns & we’re all hopeful that some normality can be resumed by the summer. We have around 66 days to undo the bad habits that have taken hold before we’re set free! We’ll be able to meet family & friends in person, no more Zoom or FaceTime calls (though they have been a godsend), go to the pub or out for a meal, and… drum roll please, book that long awaited holiday. Lockdown has meant comfort eating, less exercise and more stress. Many of us have gained a stone or more over the last year. THE 1:1 DIET can help you lose it (average loss is a stone a month) in time to enjoy the new freedom and fit into your summer gladrags! Make those 66 days count and give me a call me for a chat, no obligation, on 07519 177645. For more information go to www.one2onediet.com/valL THE 1:1 DIET has several different plans (including real food if you choose) to suit just about anyone and I will help you decide which one is right for you. It can help reset your approach to food, and crucially, you’ll have your own private support* group (me) who has the knowledge & experience (with 12 years’ experience as a Consultant). I’ll encourage you all the way through to goal and beyond – helping you maintain your success long term. Consultations are conducted following Social distancing guidelines. *Research proves that dieters are more successful with support.

Town Mayor’s Update For some reason, lots of problems have arisen recently connected to the River Brett and other local waterways. The most dramatic – the appearance of sinkholes above the old millrace in Tinker’s Lane – has already been covered in the HCN. The District Council are dealing with this, and by the time you read this, the necessary exploratory work should have been completed and a solution found – but of course that depends on what the excavations reveal. After that, we can look at whether further work there could improve the management of the Brett. There are two other bridges that are causing problems. The first is the footbridge that carries the public right of way over the stream by Aldham Mill. This has been sealed off as unsafe by Suffolk County Council which is responsible for maintaining footpaths. We have discovered that they have no current plans to repair the bridge, on the grounds of cost, and because there is another crossing of the stream a little way away. They have estimated the repair at £150,000. The Town Council will see if they will reconsider once the elections are over and the new financial year has begun, but in the meantime nothing can happen without their consent. The other bridge is the new one crossing the Brett from the McCarthy and Stone development off the High Street to the River Walk. More people have asked me about this than any other issue when they have stopped to speak to me. Originally closed last autumn with an announced re-opening date of early December, it is still fenced off. The reason is ridiculous: they have not been prepared to pay enough in premiums to cover their public liability in the event of an accident on the bridge. Finally, however, it looks like things are beginning to move. There will be works to trees and other landscaping during the latter part of March (the tree work I have seen already underway), or so they have told one of our BDC councillors, and after that let us hope that we can quickly move to the proper handover of the bridge to Babergh and a final opening to the public. The last issue is the water level in the river itself, which is extremely low because the Tinker’s Lane sluice gates have been open for quite a few weeks now. This is at least partly because the sinkholes mean it is not possible to get safely to the gates to close them. The Environment Agency have been conducting weekly checks of the ecology of the river since the levels fell so low, and have discovered that, despite what you might think, wildlife of all forms has actually thrived. And a low river level means of course that it takes a lot more rain to cause a flood. It would mean a really big change to how we view and use the Brett if the present level became the usual one, and nothing will happen in short order, but I would be very interested to hear people’s views on the possibility. Frank Minns, Hadleigh Town Mayor

This advert is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis Printers, 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk On 15th March the Prime Minister published one of the most important policy documents of recent years: the Government’s ‘Integrated Review’ of foreign policy and defence. We may have spent much of the last year at home, with international travel foregone, but it remains the case that a huge part of protecting our national interest lies beyond these shores. I was delighted that the Integrated Review set out a very ambitious program, strengthening existing ties – e.g. through NATO, so crucial in countering Russia adventurism – but also looking to build new alliances, especially in the growing markets of Asia. A ‘tilt’ towards the Asia-Pacific region could be particularly significant in the post-Brexit context, where we now have the ability to strike independent bilateral trade deals that fit our distinct economic circumstances. Effectively we have an entire new lever of economic policy and that must be focused on those markets likely to deliver the greatest increase in trade. As such, it was pleasing that the PM announced his visit to India next month to strengthen ties with the world’s largest democracy. The UK will also seek to join the TransPacific free trade agreement. These remain difficult and challenging economic times due to the pandemic, but as we emerge, building new export markets will be a key way to drive the prosperity that delivers well paid jobs for local people. A highlight of the review was our commitment to science and technology at the heart of our vision of ‘Global Britain’. We will be building huge new capacity in cyber warfare, where the conflicts of the future are likely to be fought. We have also committed to being a ‘scientific superpower’ – and with our success in developing a Covid vaccine we have surely demonstrated our great potential to build on our long-standing history of achievement in this field. It may still be some time before visits abroad are again commonplace. Nevertheless, it’s right that we set out how we see our place in the world, and a strong, optimistic global vision based on free trade and strong defence is surely the ideal place to start.

Maggie’s Walking Marathon for Amnesty International I am going to do a ‘walking marathon’ over the month of April 2021, this is a total distance of 26.2 miles (42.2 km). This is particularly challenging for me as I am disabled following a life-changing car accident 20 years ago. Although I try to keep mobile, I do find it a struggle and need two crutches to walk. I will be walking this marathon in short bursts, doing a little each day. I have decided to undertake this challenge not only to stretch my own ability, but to try and raise money for a superb human rights organisation - I am passionate about human rights and wholeheartedly support Amnesty International in its quest to stop injustice and abuse of human beings throughout the world. I desperately need as much support and encouragement as possible as I’m not sure how I’m going to achieve this - however, my determination and sheer stubbornness are very powerful motivators! If you are able to walk with me for any part of the way, that would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to sponsor me in this challenge, please visit my JustGiving page below: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/maggie-addison Thanks very much, Maggie

Who is not looking forward to the lengthening days and warmth of spring, but also the gradual easing of lockdown rules, hoping that lives and businesses can recover some measure of pre pandemic normality? How wonderful it will be to be able to make appointments at hair salons again, and enjoy browsing in high street shops before choosing a new outfit, or a birthday present or anything that has not been available in recent months from a supermarket, a DIY store or garden centre. Is this still the stuff of dreams or dare we allow ourselves to believe this might soon be a reality? For those reading this who are business owners or commercial landlords, it is not hard to imagine that you will continue to have to meet challenges. Are your business premises now too large for your post pandemic or post Brexit requirements? Is it difficult to pay your rent in full so you are considering your exit strategy or a renegotiation? Perhaps you are a commercial landlord faced with tenants’ requests for rent reductions or rent free periods or your tenants want to sub-let part of their premises to assist with outgoings. Perhaps the dynamic has changed in your partnership or limited liability partnership or limited company and you need advice as to the possibilities available and how to manage them. Or perhaps you need to attract new investment to ease your burden and wonder about the possibilities available within your business structure and how you might manage that. Some businesses may have evolved over the last year and need to review or renew their terms and conditions of sale or supply to ensure they reflect the new reality and/or aspirations and others might be emerging from recent chaos and need a broad range of start up business law advice. For competitively priced legal advice with any such issues contact Jacqueline Cooper at Excello Law Limited: 07771 750478 / 01449 744511 or jcooper@excellolaw.co.uk - Jacqueline Cooper is based mostly in the Sudbury/ Lavenham/Hadleigh area

Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk

Dear Sir At the time of the Great Plague in 1665 a box of clothes was sent from London to Eyam in the Peak District. The box opener died and the pestilence spread rapidly. The rector William Mompesson and Thomas Stanley, the previous minister, persuaded parishioners to keep within their own village area and their influence succeeded in limiting the plague. By arrangement with the Duke of Devonshire, food was placed on distant rocks for the use of the village and carried daily to Eyam at a stated hour. In the course of seven months, five-sixths of the 350 population died. Today, in the village, the cottages still record on doors the number of persons who had died in the building at the time of the plague. In 1710 a ship from Gothenburg to London was delayed when arriving at London because it had been heard that the plague had begun in Sweden. All on board, except one, were quarantined for six weeks before disembarking in London! Early in 1941 I caught scarlet fever and was quarantined in Etwall Hospital in Burton-upon-Trent for four weeks. My mother had a ten mile cycle ride to visit me, she standing in the snow and seeing me in bed in the ward. Even at Easter 1941 my brothers, who were evacuated to Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and another town, were unable to come to Waltonupon-Trent for the Easter school holiday because of the scarlet fever epidemic. We may at present be concerned at our being in lockdown and being unable to visit or travel. However it is evident that restrictions are necessary but too much dwelling on the past year’s restrictions can be wearisome. We must all be proud of the wonderful work of those employed by the National Health Service who are a great credit to themselves and all whom they serve and continue to serve with such dedication in relation to covid-19. John Cunningham

Dear Sir Residents have been contacting me as they are concerned about the new parking charges that, unfortunately, Babergh Cabinet voted in. We do not have an implementation date yet for the new parking charges regime. At the last Babergh Council Meeting it was reiterated that the new charges will not be introduced before 1st October 2021. During the meeting the Cabinet Member for Economic Growth stated that he would be consulting with Sudbury and Hadleigh Town Councils and Chambers of Commerce and that the start date for new charges would be based on the economic regeneration of the towns following Covid. He also stated that he did not expect the changes to take place this year. You can be assured that I (and no doubt also my fellow councillors) will do our utmost to ensure that the economic recovery of our town has actually happened and taken root before the introduction of the new parking fees. Just to clarify, when the changes take place, there will be one hour free parking in our car parks (reduced from the current three hours) and the fee will be £1 for three hours after that. Yours sincerely, Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor

Dear Sir We are fortunate that our town is blessed with many residents working to make Hadleigh a better place. We have councillors, societies, carers, litter pickers, footpath volunteers and we also have Wheelbarrow John. We have seen that the river walk has recently been planted with many small groups of snowdrops on either side of the footpath. This will make a very pleasant walk even more enjoyable and we salute you John Cunningham. Dave and Kate White

The February edition of the Community News tells us of the well-deserved accolade received by Friars Hall Nursing Home from the Lord Lieutenant. I would like to mention the other Hadleigh care homes looking after vulnerable people and their efforts to keep covid at bay. Sydney Brown for instance who had no cases amongst the staff and residents. The staff were particularly helpful. Under Adele Brewer’s management, they were kind and always cheerful, so I feel that congratulations should be extended to all residential homes and in particular, Sydney Brown who have kept covid out of their home altogether. Pat Rocks

Dear Sir I have been overwhelmed by the kind responses to my letter in the last Hadleigh Community News. I have decided to stand in the Suffolk County Council election on 6th May. I hope you will consider giving me your vote. If you wish to support me by stuffing envelopes, delivering leaflets or displaying a poster, I would be delighted, please email: Kathryn@Guthrumhouse.co.uk. Yours sincerely, Kathryn Grandon

Dear Sir As a regular walker and cyclist I have discovered new and enjoyable routes around Hadleigh during the pandemic. People as they pass, or make space, smile, exchange a greeting. All seems relaxed and in that context it is. However that is not the full picture. There is I am sorry to say a blight on that this picture of daily life in a pandemic - Litter! Discarded masks, gloves, drink cans and bottles, disposable cups, food wrappers etc line the footpaths and hedgerows. Not a minor problem by any means. On average while on a cycle ride I estimate I pass around 25 to 50 items in every mile. All waiting, as the grass and vegetation rises up around them, to be shredded up and spread around when the flail mowers arrive later in the year. Dog poo regularly appears in our parks and playing field despite the proximity of a bin. And to me the final straw, human poo deposited in the kiddies play area next to Celotex! It seems the culprit needed the slide to maintain their balance while they completed the task! Removed immediately, I can assure you of that, but not a pleasant experience. Peer pressure when littering happens, despite the risk of verbal abuse, is the only solution. It's a community problem, which must be resolved by the community. Not left to a small number of individuals voluntarily doing their bit to stem an onslaught of litter discarded by the minority. R. Southgate

MAY ELECTIONS We would like to introduce our first candidates for the town councillor positions standing under the Hadleigh Together banner; Ben Dixon and Carl Beer. Ben is one of the founder members of the Hadleigh Veteran’s football team and comes from a sporting and health background. He is a father of 2 and is keen to work within the community to help continue the work the current council have started to make Hadleigh a place where all ages can enjoy being part of a thriving neighbourhood. Carl is a local lad and a father of 2. Another founding member of the Hadleigh Veterans and keen football coach, player and a qualified FA referee. He is keen to get involved and to help make the town he grew up in a place all generations will thrive and play an active part in. Hadleigh Together is a platform for election; a support mechanism for people like Ben and Carl who would never consider running alone as an independent candidate as it’s just too scary. Hadleigh Together assists independent people to stand for election supporting them in the process whilst maintaining their independence. No party line; no requirement to vote together; just listen to the motion, make up your mind and vote accordingly. Do so but know that you can ask for help of others if you need it.

SEE YOU ON MAY 6TH. HADLEIGH TOGETHER

Promoted by Frank Minns on behalf of Ben Dixon and Carl Beer, all of 8 High Street, Hadleigh, IP7 5AP. Printed by Avis Newsprint Ltd, 68 High Street, Hadleigh, IP7 5EF.

As I put pen to paper I realise that it is a year to the day since the first lockdown. Hasn’t life been different, but now more and more of us are having the vaccine, so hopefully we will all be able to meet again soon. Spring has arrived and we are all enjoying a burst of yellow in the gardens and the birds are singing cheering us all up and the days are getting longer too. We have had two committee meetings on Zoom, making plans for when we can start meetings again, we will of course keep all members informed. In the meantime all the committee would like to wish you a very Happy Easter. Take care. Some members may recognise the photo from The Flower Arranger

What an end to the Spring term! Though we have remained open throughout this lockdown, it was amazing to welcome back all of our children on the 8th of March and to introduce them to lots of new faces. Our themes of Spring and Growing have led to lots more time being spent outside and getting muddy. Fingers crossed we will be able to pick our own produce throughout the Summer term. Thank you to all who supported our raffle and a special thanks to Sian for another beautiful drip cake, the proceeds will be put towards improving our garden area. If anyone is able to donate compost or bark chippings please get in touch with us as we continue to develop our garden. We now have a waiting list for some sessions, so if you are looking to join us next term or in September please do get in touch. For more information please email us at playstationhadleigh@gmail.com or telephone us on 824271.

Is it time to go Green? At Tomlinson Groundcare we are celebrating our thirtieth anniversary in business this year. Over the years we have added to the types of equipment we offer. For the first time in generations the outdoor power equipment market is changing, with fossil fuels beginning to be replaced by cleaner, greener energy. When you visit our large showroom at Buxhall, you can view most of the John Deere range of ride-on lawnmowers and try before you buy plus there is a small AL-KO ride-on for customers with limited access to their gardens. We supply petrol powered 2 stroke equipment from Echo but we are finding more battery powered equipment is being sold. On display is a whole range of battery powered equipment from mowers to hedge cutters from AL-KO, EGO and Pellenc and we can also order in ECHO and Etesia if required Battery equipment can deliver petrol-matching power without the noise, fuss and fumes. It is comfortable to use, with impressive run times and fast recharge. You have the freedom to work exhaust and emission free. The ideal choice for the environmentally conscious gardener. If you have never tried battery power and are thinking of upgrading your garden equipment it is certainly worth talking to the sales team to see if it suits your requirements. The Tomlinson Groundcare sales team are very impressed with the range of battery powered lawnmowers and tools which are in our showroom and available to try. We have both domestic and commercial customers using battery powered products and have had very positive feedback. Telephone 01449 736060 www.tomlinsongroundcare.co.uk

Hadleigh & District Garden Club By the time this April issue comes out the clocks will have gone forwards and it will be Easter, a whole year has gone by since the garden club has met as a group, but hopefully that will not be the case for very much longer. Early spring is a busy time in the garden and now is a good time to put a mulch on the soil to keep in moisture and to suppress weeds, the worms will do all the work so there is no disturbance to the soil. Leaf mould is good for this and for a few years I tried to make my own by putting leaves in a black sack with some holes punched in the bottom and leaving them behind the shed. When I opened them a year later instead of the 'lovely crumbly sweet stuff' that Monty Don waxes lyrical about I always ended up with a wet smelly mess. However the year before last I made a box shaped leaf store with wood and chicken wire, the leaves have been sinking down all this time but still looking quite dry on the outside, a few weeks ago I removed the outer layer and, amazingly, I had at last, the 'lovely crumbly sweet stuff' which went straight onto the raspberry bed, it's only taken five years to get it right! April is the month to sow crops outdoors such as broad beans, peas, radishes and turnips, any tomatoes sown last month should be potted on. It is a good idea to put supports around border plants that tend to flop later in the year so that they can grow through them without disturbance. I have used spent raspberry canes for this, they can be kept outside in a sheltered place and they are sturdy enough to do the job, they last for a few years and when they finally start to dry and snap break them up and pop them in the compost bin. Many house plants benefit from repotting every few years and now is a good time to do it. Only move the plant to a pot that is one size bigger than the one in which it is currently growing and use a houseplant compost or one that is appropriate for a particular type of plant, for example cacti or orchids, as the season goes on then begin to reintroduce a feeding regime. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

HTC21.48 Public Forum A member of the public asked a question about the budget and reserves, the question was “When Councillors agreed a 13% increase in the Precept (Council Tax) at the previous Town Council Meeting on Thursday 21st January 2021, the General Reserve figures presented to Councillors differed materially from those certified by SALC as the Internal Auditor. SALC certified the General Reserves at £426,874 & only £21,950 for 2018/19 and 2019/20 respectively. These compare with those presented at the HTC meeting of £426,874 & £505,577. Why do the figures presented at the meeting differ so substantially? Which are correct? If SALC is right then the General Reserve for the current year forecast 2020/21 and that budgeted for 2021/22 would be well below the recommended minimum boundary of 9 months. In which case, should the Precept be reviewed?” Unfortunately, the internal audit for 19/20 had the incorrect earmarked reserves figure quoted, this was noticed immediately and corrected by the internal auditor. Unfortunately, the incorrect version was placed on the website. The correct version is now on the website and the figures quoted at the meeting on 21st January 2021 are correct. The internal audit for 18/19 has the reserves figures as £805,665 &

£143,100 and this is correct. A member of the public asked three questions: 1. To Councillor Beggerow, Schleip and Minns - Recently you all voted against a proposed investigation into disclosure of an alleged prejudice against an applicant, doesn’t this contradict your claims of openness and transparency when you were elected? The Council is as committed as ever to openness and transparency but has no powers to conduct such an investigation. Even if such an investigation were possible, given the nature of the matter to be looked into, it would not have been possible to conduct it publicly. 2. To Councillor Beggerow, Schleip and Minns – Do any of you sit on the committee that the proposed investigation would have then investigated if it was approved, if so, would voting against the investigation be a conflict of interest? A conflict of interest cannot arise because such an investigation cannot take place. 3. The applicant on the receiving end of the alleged prejudice were they successful and if not, why not? This question cannot be answered as this is a confidential matter. The Localism Act 2011 states that Town Councils do not have the power to conduct investigations into code of conduct complaints, so we are not able to conduct an investigation. HTC21.49 Finance (Payment Schedules) Proposed by Councillor Schleip, seconded by Councillor Minns it was agreed to approve the attached schedule of payments over £500 while noting that the Town Council Manager will approve any payments under £500 in accordance with the Financial Regulations. Profit from our Experience

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 24 February 2021 were: • Suffolk CC report Councillor Jones said that, following a slow start, the Covid vaccination programme was now going well; he was grateful to all the volunteers. The draft budget had been approved. • District Council report The amended proposals concerning car parking in Hadleigh and Sudbury had been approved by Cabinet – ie one hour’s free parking; a charge of £1 for 2-3 hours; £4 for up to a day. The new arrangements would not be implemented until October 2021 at the earliest. The draft budget had been approved on 23 February. Garden waste bin collections would resume week commencing 8 March. • National Grid proposals The National Grid’s Network Options Assessment was recommending two projects within the southern area of East Anglia: a new 400kV double circuit between Bramford and Twinstead; a new 400kV double circuit in south East Anglia (ATNC). Both projects were designated ‘critical’ – ie deemed to be essential and were destined for completion in 2028 and 2030 respectively. It was agreed that a working party should be formed. The Clerk had received an email from National Grid offering to meet the Parish Council to explain more about the proposals and the consultation process; she would liaise with them to confirm a date and time for a Zoom meeting. It was agreed that this should be open to all PC members, not just the working party. • Quiet Lanes Suffolk The report from the working party, including a summary of responses to the consultation letter, was noted; 18 households had responded out of 255 in Layham. The Clerk would send out a community email informing parishioners that they could still respond to the letter up until Saturday 6 March; the public consultation (via Zoom) would take place from 6pm – 7pm on Thursday 18 March. Councillors would make a final decision on the way forward at the PC meeting on 24 March. • ANPR trial As agreed at the last meeting, the Clerk had confirmed that Layham wished to participate in the trial and had forwarded suggested locations for the cameras to SCC Highways. However, Highways had advised that these locations were not suitable and had proposed alternatives. Councillors Curran and Paton would liaise with SCC. • Annual Parish Meeting This would take place on Wednesday 28 April at 7.30pm, via Zoom. The draft agenda was approved and the Clerk would contact the various outside organisations to invite them to speak. Please try to get recycling as right as possible Cardboard is now referred to as ‘brown gold’. It is becoming scarce as more and more parcel deliveries are coming to our homes. Cardboard is only recyclable if it is CLEAN and DRY – so please: • Flatten your boxes • Remove plastic tape • Make sure the lid of the blue bin is closed Wet cardboard cannot be recycled. Thank you. St. Andrew’s – your Parish Church We are very glad to be able to say that services will resume at St Andrew’s on Easter Sunday (4 April), with a 9.15am Eucharist that day. After Easter, it is our hope that there will be a 9.15am service on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, so 11th and 25th April and thereafter. The church is also open daily for private prayer, and you are very welcome to visit; please scan the QR code if you can, using the NHS COVID-19 app to help trace and stop the spread of the virus. If you’re unable to use the app, please fill in the track and trace form. Wednesday 14 April is the date of the Annual Parochial Church Meeting for St Andrew’s, and this meeting will take place at 7.30pm in the church. Those on the church electoral roll will receive an invitation, but anyone is very welcome to attend. We will be taking this opportunity to begin to think carefully about the future of St Andrew’s and to consider the church’s identity and purpose in the community - and how it might retain and develop them in a manageable way. If you are interested in what the future might hold for St Andrew’s, you are warmly encouraged to come to the meeting. If there is any matter you wish to discuss please do contact the Rector, Fr Jo, on 822218.

Archibald and Agnes Stannard Long Road, Layham 1911

There must be stories behind life in 1821 compared with 1931. It is interesting how stable the housing stock was over 150 years. It would be great to find out by how much the population leapt in the 1960s when Brett Green was built. When pamphlets are delivered around the village now – we visit 255 homes. Wikipedia tells me that in 2011 there were 589 people living in the village – I guess there are over 600 now.

Layham Playgroup We would like to wish a BIG Happy Easter to all our friends from Layham playgroup and to everyone who has supported us. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our families for their ongoing support throughout these strange times we are living in. The children have been enjoying playing in the garden, when the weather permits, and exploring all the signs of spring…the daffodils appearing in our garden, the birds feeding from our homemade feeders and the ever so slightly warmer weather. We have been updating our literacy area and beginning to introduce carpet sessions to practise our letters and sounds. Look out for the new literacy area when we return after Easter! Our cookbook is available Spring at Layham Playgroup to buy and at £5 there are plenty of exciting recipes both sweet and savoury to explore. photo of children in Please refer to our website or Facebook page for their’garden’ more information. Ipswich Charity Emmaus receives £30,000 Grant from Suffolk Freemasons

LABELS, NAMEPLATES & MORE... UNDER SURFACE Produced in Polyester, Polycarbonate & PVC

Matt or Gloss Finish Overlays 0.15mm – 2mm Thickness Windows & Embossing 3M Adhesives

METAL NAMEPLATES Emmaus Suffolk first opened it’s doors in 2016 and since then have grown rapidly and now run groups and workshops on a regular basis in Ipswich and Felixstowe to support those within the local community who would otherwise be socially isolated, are struggling with long-term unemployment or are at risk of homelessness. Emmaus Suffolk provides work opportunities and experience through their shops in Felixstowe and Ipswich, as well as in a new warehouse on the waterfront in Ipswich. Among those volunteering with Emmaus Suffolk are those who have been unemployed for a long time, and through offering volunteering roles Emmaus Suffolk gives people the chance to make a difference for themselves, in a supportive environment through work related experience and training. The ambition of the charity is to introduce to Suffolk new ways of tackling entrenched homelessness and unemployment by enabling and empowering people to help themselves through meaningful activity that will benefit both themselves and others. Claire Staddon, Chief Executive of Emmaus Suffolk said “We are incredibly grateful to Suffolk Freemasons for their generous grant, which will enable us to offer a second community house. Our houses give people who would otherwise be homeless or insecurely housed a safe place to call home. People living within our Community Houses receive support to live as independently as possible. They can claim Universal Credit and are responsible for managing their own budgets, paying their bills and shopping and cooking for themselves. They still receive support from the Emmaus Suffolk team, but we do not have a staff member living on-on site. Our companions volunteer up to 15 hours a week in our social enterprises, giving them hands on experience, training and a supportive environment in which they can reach their full potential. The aim of our Community House is to provide a stepping stone to help people rebuild their lives and move on to live and work completely independently. But, like at all Emmaus communities around the UK, there is no time limit on the support offered, and our tenants are free to stay for as long as they want to.” Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Suffolk Freemasons, Tim McCormick added “We are very pleased to be able to give our support to Emmaus, they do wonderful work supporting people and their families throughout our local community and we know that this grant will help them to further develop the vital work they offer.” The grant from Suffolk Freemasons comes through the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which is funded by Freemasons from across England and Wales. Hadleigh u3a Celebrating our motto ‘learn, laugh, live’ - come and join us! We are all looking forward to the promised easing of restrictions from June 21 and we at Hadleigh u3a are planning to celebrate the relaunch of our regular activities with our annual Summer Party on Monday 12TH July at the Guildhall. After that our monthly speaker meetings will return to our usual venue at the URC in Market Place, Hadleigh on the afternoon of the second Monday of each month. During the covid period we have replaced these with a Zoom presentation at the same time every month. Don’t know about the u3a? No longer in full-time employment and looking for something interesting to take you out of home and daytime television – and who isn’t after the past year? Then read on. Here at Hadleigh u3a we have over 200 members. Now we are about to cast off the shackles of lockdown, we are more keen than ever to welcome newcomers. Nationally there are well over 1,000 u3as with over 430,000 members. And almost half a million members can’t be wrong! Founded in 1982, the u3a is a UK-wide collection of locally run groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun and enjoy exploring new ideas, skills and activities together. Apart from being friendly and relaxed it also provides the perfect antidote to the issue of loneliness for anyone who has been left feeling a bit bereft of human company over the past year. There are no age limits and no formal qualifications required or to be gained. Membership here in Hadleigh is normally £15 (but currently only £12 per year due to reduced activities in covid period) and for that you get a monthly open meeting with a professional speaker, with the emphasis on interesting and entertaining subjects, plus the opportunity of joining one of over twenty small special interest groups ranging across a wide variety of interests. Have a look at our website for more information. We also organise theatre trips, days out to lots of places of interest and a Christmas lunch at Hintlesham Hall in December. All these are charged at cost and all the more enjoyable when shared with like-minded people. All members also receive a quarterly national magazine called Third Age Matters, full of interesting articles and what other u3a’s are doing around the country. To find out more do have a look at our website or contact me for an information pack. Contact: Chairman Sue Witham Tel 07770 870405; E: suetram@aol.com www.u3asites/hadleigh suffolk

News from Whatfield CEVCP School I have been teaching since 1994 having done a B.Ed. course at Homerton College. Nearly all of my teaching career has been in Suffolk with three years spent at the British School of Manila early on in my career. My previous post was Head of School at a Junior School which was federated with an Infant School and catered for mainstream children alongside two specialist units for children with Education Health Care plans who needed more than mainstream education could offer. Many of these children were from out of catchment. My start at both Whatfield CEVCP and Bildeston was not quite as I had envisaged but didn’t come at a huge surprise during these unprecedented times. Both schools offered provision to Key Worker and vulnerable children, and online learning to those at home during lockdown. I really have already gained a great sense of community within the Whatfield School. I hope that going forward once restrictions are lifted I will have the opportunity to meet many more people from the village and further afield. Julia Shaw

Digital Printing It has been lovely to have all our children back at school, they have settled back in to school life tremendously well. To celebrate World Book Day children took part in an extreme reading competition, they sent in photos of themselves enjoying their favourite books in the most unusual places. Here are our winners. Each of them awarded with a certificate and a new book to read. Acorns Have been writing their own versions of Three Billy Goats and are enjoying being back together. They have also been taking part in the keeping active campaign. Saplings We have enjoyed being back together and being able to play with the older children again! We have put our minds to a 'Mastermind' PE lesson and worked well together to try to problem solve! Oaks Have been using Talk for Writing to improve their characterisation and as part of this they have learnt to retell a story of Aladdin using story maps. The children have taken on an Active Challenge for the month of March and are taking part in different forms of exercise every day. Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward – March, 2021 Spring has arrived and we are entering the end stages of a number of projects which will come to fruition, namely Angel Court Housing, Hadleigh Pool opening, the Corks Lane Offices Development and the final stages of the McCarthy & Stone landscaping development and homes for the elderly. CORKS LANE PLANNING APPLICATION GRANTED – 9 March, 2021 Final Full Planning Application has been granted to redevelop and provide 57 dwellings (Use Class C3) with private amenity areas, parking, fencing, landscaping, open space and refuse facilities, access roads and associated works and infrastructure. It will incorporate the part demolition and part retention and conversion of the existing office buildings, (including the retention and conversion of The Maltings, No's 21 & 23 Bridge Street, River View & The Cottage & demolition of Bridge House), site of the former Babergh District Council Offices & associated land. It is disappointing we were unable to retain the 100 car parking spaces, which I believe are integral as part of the strategic plan for Hadleigh. SWIMMING POOL Babergh have completed the building of our new pool due to open 12th April. I have just had an excellent virtual tour by the new Pool Centre Manager Jonathan Harvey and am really pleased with the results and am sure you

will all look forward to enjoying the new 25m pool and sauna facilities. I suggested that I would be pleased to sponsor a ‘Survival swimming course for young children,’ which is something that is done in Holland. All young children from an early age must be able to get to a canal / river bank. I believe in this day and age, no child should not be taught to swim for their own safety as well as future health. RIVER BRIDGE AT MANOR GARDENS There has been much discussion regarding the closure of the new river bridge at Manor Gardens in Hadleigh. The reason for its closure is simply because McCarthy & Stone do not have a high limit of indemnity on their insurance policy via Aon, to cover any potential public liability claims. Further, there position is M & S would rather the bridge remain closed until handover of the site, than have a potential claim on their corporate policy or pay any increased premium prior to handover. The handover of the site is expected to be completed after the coppicing of riverside trees, which I have persuaded Babergh to undertake 16th March, sewing and resowing of the wildlife on the 22nd March and final completion of other minor site works. I have requested the bridge is opened immediately to the recently appointed newly Project Manager, as ultimately people crossing the bridge do have a duty of care to themselves, so the potential for a claim is minimal. However, there is a secondary issue that when the sowing takes places, it needs to take prior to the land being open to the public and plants being damaged. SINK HOLE Councillor Fraser and I will meet with Babergh Officers to discuss the possible options for the land infill of the Sink Hole by the River Brett. All options will be considered including whether the river can be diverted back to its original historical course. LOCALITY BUDGET APPLICATIONS I was pleased to put forward an application for funding from Trevor Clarke on behalf of Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics Society (HADS) for a contribution towards their next production. Also, I have asked the Beaumont Primary School to make an application towards their creative arts week in June. I have to volunteered to bring two of the Florilegium Artists to give a days workshop on Cedric Morris ‘s drawing, painting, arts and plants. It would be wonderful for our young people to have the opportunity to produce a painting, which may be selected to be exhibited alongside the Cedric Morris Florilegium at the Hadleigh Old School Arts Centre in due course. PURDAH Babergh will be observing a pre-election period moratorium (purdah) in respect of the forthcoming Police and Crime Commissioner and Suffolk County Council Elections on Thursday 6 May 2021. The moratorium will run from 25 March 2021 – the date that the notice of election is published – through to 7 May 2021. During this moratorium period, local authorities will not be publishing any publicity on controversial issues or report views or proposals in such a way that identifies them with any individual members or groups of members. Please remember to vote if you want your voice heard and continue to support our local Tory County Councillor Michael Fraser. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson sian.dawson@babergh.gov.uk M: 07931 703157

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Happy Easter dear readers, and may it be the last you have to spend alone! What good progress you are making to reduce the impact of the dreadful virus. Thanks to the onerous restrictions borne by our humans, things are looking up here at the Centre. We had two weeks of carefully controlled return to riding, much enjoyed by all the participants and volunteers. Now a break for the school holidays, and a moment to evaluate the situation, going forward. Our grateful thanks go to the Hadleigh Town Council who responded to our cry for help, and have sent a generous grant of £2000 to help with the care of the ‘workers’ (our horses and ponies) who are out of work but not furloughed. It’s a big help and the live herd asks me to be sure to mention your generosity. The fund raising committee is coming out of hibernation and has had its first quiz of the year (on Zoom). The Centre will be hosting a fund raising walk (of about 6 miles) on May 2nd from 10.00. You will be asked to pay on the day, rather than collect sponsorship, and after your stroll through this beautiful valley where we live, there will be refreshments for our gallant walkers. More details from our website as usual. The hungry horses are pleased to see the grass growing, and for the weather warming up. This month let me introduce you to Roddy and April. Both are still wearing their rugs in my photos because copy has to be sent out for publication well in advance of your receiving this blog! Roddy is a palomino Welsh Cob gelding, who came to us last year and is learning to be Bob’s replacement. ‘Hawkhill April’, as she’s officially known, was born in 2006. She came to us in May 2015, and has been a valuable part of the pony team. She’s the largest of the ‘girls’ who live out together in a group of four. They have three paddocks to roam, and a nice sheltered yard behind the stable block where food and water is on tap. Talk about five star accommodation.....some people have all the luck. My room mate Babs and I are hoping to be allowed to work again soon; meanwhile please carry on being careful so we can get back to normal as quickly as possible. See you next month. Tribute to Patricia Stevenson Members of Hadleigh WI were stunned to hear of the sudden death on the 6th March of their joint President Patricia Stevenson. Patricia joined Hadleigh WI over 20 years ago when she and her husband Jock moved to Hadleigh from Scotland. Always cheerful and willing to help, she will be a great loss. Patricia regularly attended the WI bridge club and participated in many Federation events and courses, including a trial gliding lesson which was more thrilling than she had expected when the canopy of the glider became loose. Patricia was one of the mainstays of Hadleigh WI and there was not an event or outing in which she did not take part or help to organise.

Memories Cafe, Lunch Clubs and Cinema Happy Easter to all our Members, Friends and Volunteers from everyone at The Ansell Centre Charity

As promised last month, here are a few more members of the Memories Cafe receiving their weekly newsletter and bun! As you can see, everyone is always pleased to have a doorstep visit but we are all looking forward to the day when we can get back together in the Ansell Centre. We are especially missing our members and volunteers who don’t live in Hadleigh. They receive a newsletter by post every week. Both our lunch clubs continue to get in touch with members by a regular phone call and chat. At the time of writing this, it is exactly a year ago since we had to cancel our March lunch club. Little did we think that we would not have been able to hold a single lunch club for over a year. Unfortunately, it seems it will still be several months before we can open the doors to Hollywood in Hadleigh. We will show a film as soon as it is safe to do so - keep looking on the website and in the Community News to keep up to date with our plans. We look forward to the day when we can welcome you back to the Ansell Centre as soon as we can safely do so. In the meantime, if you have any questions about our activities, please speak to one of us as detailed below. News from Kersey School Otters (Reception, Years 1 and 2) With a return to school Otters Class have been very busy. We have continued our learning about plants and seeds by starting our very own cress experiment, placing the seeds in different places and using different variables to see how they grow. In our class vote, most of us thought that the seeds that have water and sunlight will grow the best and we are checking every day to see what happens! We have also celebrated World Book Day and had a whole school celebration where we were able to make our very own wooden spoon book character. It was so much fun to design and create whilst also sharing our favourite books with each other. The children in Otters loved the opportunity to work with the Badgers and Owls. It was wonderful to celebrate our mums on Mother's Day and all the children in Otters had a go at sewing a beautiful flower to decorate the card they made. The children were very proud of their creations and were so eager to make them with such care for their mums. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) “Once upon a time …” Badgers class went ‘Into the Forest’ with our author for the term, Anthony Browne. We have enjoyed his ‘twist’ on a traditional tale and written our own versions using tips and tricks from his books. We have also shared other Anthony Browne books that we like. In art, we have examined his illustrations, discussed and used warm, cool and complimentary colours to respond to the book. For Mothering Sunday, we wrote kenning poems about the important women in our lives, made and decorated cards with heart and flower designs and presented them with daffodils and chocolates kindly donated by St Mary’s church. Our creativity continued when, as a school, we worked with buddies to make World Book Day characters from wooden spoons. The variety of designs and characters were incredible and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed learning together. Harry Potter, Mr Stink, the Gruffalo and others will decorate our school entrance and remind us of the wonderful time we had. The Romans is our topic and we have learned about their invasion, Boudicca’s revolt and Hadrian’s wall. The class have been really keen to learn about this period of history and have developed their understanding and explaining skills further. To finish we will investigate the ‘Romanisation’ of Britain. Owls (Years 5 and 6) Today, Owls had to create a recipe that the chef of Ernest Shackleton’s infamous Endurance Expedition might have come up with… Did I forget to mention – a recipe he might come up with after months of being trapped on a weather-beaten coastline (off an island off Antarctica along) with a frostbitten 20+ crew to support? Yes, Owls have been living the life of intrepid explorers and heroic survivors in English whilst simultaneously learning about the Geography of Antarctica throughout their topic. Sprinkle a bit of science on top and they are now experts in how the classification of organisms, plants and animal kingdoms has developed over time. Like Badgers, the Owls created beautifully framed Kennings to honour their mothers and produced a spectacular array of wooden-spoon-characters to celebrate World Book Day. Following the theme of creation I have been inspired by some brilliant pieces of writing and artwork too. In conclusion, not even two weeks back and all Owls have embraced their return to school with enthusiasm and a hard-working attitude. Brilliant! Worship Council The Collective Worship Council of Kersey Primary presented their wonderful teachers, Teaching Assistants, Midday Supervisors and Caretaker with a bunch of flowers and a bar of chocolate to thank them for their care and nurture during lockdown and in celebration of Mothering Sunday this weekend. All the children were presented with a posy of daffodils and chocolate from St Mary’s Church to take home as a thank you from Staff and Governors for all the parental support for their children and for Kersey School during the past year. If you would like to know more about Kersey school or you would like to arrange a visit please ring the office on 01473 823397, email admin@kersey.suffolk.sch.uk or visit our new website www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk

Thank you I would just like to say a very sincere thank you to my Step-Daughter and Grandchildren for all of the help and advice they have given me over the past few months since I lost my lovely Wife Lesley. Especially my Step-daughter Jo who has been a tower of strength and took all of the responsibility to deal with the urgent matters. I could never have managed it all on my own and they have been such a source of information and help and my thanks are very sincere. Keith Doidge

Bentwaters Cold War Museum 2020 might be a year many will want to forget and none more so than the museum community and in particular the smaller ones. At Bentwaters Cold War Museum located at the former American air base near Rendlesham just north of Woodbridge, the doors have been closed to the public since the end of the 2019 season. The museum is housed in the original United States Air Force Command Post, a large bunker with three foot thick walls, narrow corridors and a single entrance and not designed with the problems of access during a pandemic! Not only was the museum unable to receive visitors, but the support organisation, the Bentwaters Aviation Society which is normally a vibrant group, had to cancel all meetings and events. Everything came to a standstill. But not to be defeated the society and museum came up with some ideas to help get through lockdowns and restrictions. There have been regular updates to society members with information and entertainment. Facebook and website updates for the public. A photo shoot with limited numbers outside with social distancing in the summer proved very popular and an online photo competition for the members at Christmas attracted a good number, including American veterans from across the pond! The encouragement and kindness of those who support the museum has been tremendous and very much appreciated by the volunteers who work to keep it maintained and ready to reopen as soon as permitted. The biggest challenge has been funding with little income received in 2020. The chairman and museum manager, Graham Haynes said “2020 was a challenging year for us all but with the dedication of our amazing staff, we still managed to complete a few projects and survive the year. Hopefully the spring will bring the opportunity to open our doors again and we look forward to welcoming you all to see what we have been up to. There has been a great deal of work going on in the background, so I want to thank the volunteers for all that they have been doing, both at the museum prior to lockdown and from home when they couldn't get in. I sincerely hope you all stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you at Bentwaters, as soon as we are able to do so." Like many other museums the difficulties are having a real effect and at Bentwaters there has been a great deal of thought put into how the museum might reopen. An online booking system, controlled entrance and exit, limiting numbers, more ventilation are all under consideration, but it all means more expense and reduced income. A funding programme is soon to be launched to give supporters an opportunity to help where it is needed. Above all else though the museum is determined to open and share the history of the twin bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge. And in this year that history has a significant milestone as we commemorate the arrival of the Americans in 1951 and the huge impact they had on this part of Suffolk. When Sudbury Dramatic Society presented The Magic Lantern Mystery created by Malcolm Hollister and Adam Webster, online just before Christmas, it received a lot of positive feedback from those who attended and now, if you missed it, you can book on one of another three dates and join in the fun – tickets to join the online Murder Mystery event are back on sale for Saturdays 10th, 17th & 24th April at 7.30pm Choose your date, buy your team ticket and get your ‘bubble’ together, then between you can try to solve the mystery, all from the safety of your own front room. You will see documents, videoed interviews and get the chance to question the suspects yourself all brought to you through the magic of 21st century technology. All you need is PC, an internet connection and email address, plus of course a bit of brainpower! At the end, the teams will decide who-they-think-dunnit, submit their own reports and then watch the filmed summing up and conclusions from the indefatigable Inspector Sheerluck. And April also sees the publication of an exciting new book celebrating Sudbury Dramatic Society – The First 100 Years, written by Sara Knight with Liz Cole, and the help of an extensive archive kept at The Quay Theatre, added to by interviews with past and present members and full of memories and photographs. It is well known that SDS converted the Quay Theatre building themselves in the late 1970s, from a riverside warehouse, and that it now operates as a separate charity. Less well known is that the society was formed from a base at the Victoria Hall in Prince Street, and also performed in the old Gainsborough Theatre, (now the Infinity Nightclub), and for convalescing WW1 soldiers in Belle Vue House. Nowadays SDS is a still major contributor to The Quay Theatre contributing in the region of £50k annually, but productions have been on tour, fundraising in locations as exotic as Westwood Park, Great Maplestead and Spain. The book has been published with the aid of grants from Sudbury Freeman’s Trust, and from Councillor Jack Owen. Sudbury Dramatic Society – The First 100 Years will be available initially via www.sudburydramatic.com for £12.99. Team Tickets for the extra dates of The Magic Lantern Mystery are available by following the link from the SDS website at www.sudburydramatic.com

Hadleigh South District Councillor’s Surgery These are difficult times for many people. I hope that you and your family are keeping well. In line with Government recommendations, with regret, I am cancelling my monthly surgery until further notice. I understand that you may have issues that you wish to talk to your District Councillor about. Clearly, I am not able to assist with health matters, but if you wish to contact me, please do so: kathryn.grandon@babergh.gov.uk If urgent, call: 01473 824489 Babergh, during this period, is changing the way it works. It is reducing faceto-face services, such as the pop-up Customer Access point at Hadleigh library, for example, and replacing visits by telephone calls. Babergh is still available to help and support people by phone on 0300 1234000 and via its website. Employees visiting people’s homes, for example, tradespeople carrying out work and essential repairs in council houses, will be following strict social distancing guidelines and hand sanitisation, and may ask a few additional questions before entering customers’ homes - in order to protect both them and tenants. Babergh is also exploring ways to support our communities and businesses in Babergh over the difficult weeks ahead, in line with the package of new financial measures for individuals and businesses announced by the Chancellor (see separate article). The most important thing is that we all try to stay safe during this unprecedented time.

Hadleigh Community Primary School Nursery Applications At Nursery we have been encouraging the children to take part in many outdoor learning opportunities, whether they have been attending nursery or learning from home. We are a Forest School Nursery and so we want to foster a love for nature in the children and their families, as well as spending lots of time outside in the fresh air. The Hadleigh Hedgehogs Nursery children have enjoyed activities such as making icy sun catchers to hang and sparkle in the trees and bird feeders to attract feathered visitors to our gardens. We were so pleased that so many of our families took part in the RSPB's Big Garden Bird Watch too. We are lucky to be able to use our Woodland Building ‘The Hedgehog Hideout’ to spot birds from and also use as a base for the Nursery children to explore and learn from. We are now allocating spaces for next September’s intake so if you are looking for an outdoor setting that operates alongside a more traditional Nursery then we are the place for you! The children at our Nursery get to spend time in both the Forest School Nursery in the great outdoors and traditional Nursery so really do have the best of both worlds. If your child was born between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018 then please ask for an application form at the school office as soon as possible. We are able to offer 15 and 30 hour funded sessions and run a Nursery Lunch Club too where the children can bring in their own packed lunch or enjoy a school lunch. PE Ted has been incredibly busy working with the P.E. Team to deliver home school lessons. He was also excited to see his ITFC friend Bluey; together they set out some fitness and fun based activities for our pupils to participate in at home during lockdown. As well as this, Ted spent time travelling around Hadleigh taking photographs of himself in different locations. The children had lots of fun during February half-term following his trail. Ted and his team are now getting prepared for all the staff and pupils to join in with his skipping challenge Skip into Spring. Watch this space! Key Stage 2 – Year 4 As school commenced once again, Year 4 were greeted with various wildflower seeds placed in organic soil using upcycled containers. These were donated by HEAT, Hadleigh Environmental Action Team, and will be planted in various gardens.
