Hadleigh Remembrance Day 2020 Every year in November we pause as a nation to reflect on the great sacrifices made by our forebears. Here in Hadleigh, the Hadleigh & District Branch of the RBL assists the local authorities by organising an annual wreath laying ceremony and a march past of the war memorial, followed by a church service.

However, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and in light of the risks posed, the March Past and the Remembrance service in St Mary’s Church have both been cancelled. We recognise that this will be deeply disappointing for all those who were due to take part and it is not a step that has been taken lightly. The decision has been taken based on the latest expert advice to protect the health and well-being of all.

A short Remembrance Service and wreath laying ceremony will take place at 3pm on Sunday 8 Nov 20 at the Hadleigh War Memorial Garden, but it will go ahead as a closed ceremony. Restrictions on numbers mean that only invited local civic leaders, people representing recognised voluntary organisations and veterans will be allowed into the memorial garden.

Despite the changes this year, we are encouraging people across the town to ensure Remembrance Sunday is still marked appropriately by taking part in a remote and socially distanced Remembrance activity, whether that be watching the service on television or pausing for the Two Minute Silence in their home or on their doorsteps.

Our annual poppy appeal campaign has also been effected by the pandemic, however, we have managed to distribute our poppy collection boxes to the majority of our usual outlets in the town and we will have a collection table in Morrisons over the two weekends, albeit scaled down. Our Armed Forces do a brilliant job and they are always there to serve and protect us. It can be an extremely tough job and the Poppy Appeal is a great way for us to show our support for them. Please wear your poppy with pride and remember every poppy counts.

Hadleigh’s first cycle parking consultation Hadleigh Town Council and Hadleigh Cycling Club’s Working Group invited cyclists to look at ways to improve the cycle infrastructure as they rode around the town. Two groups, socially distanced, met on 10th October and examined 20 sites, including Morrisons’ covered cycle parking close to the entrance, the overgrown Sheffield stands near Toppesfield Bridge, the tyre-pinching stands near the pharmacy and the inaccessible rings next to the Library. As they rode, they found visiting cyclists attaching bikes to lamp columns and leaning bikes on the wall next to Huffers.

It was agreed that whilst they would like to see more and better-quality cycle parking in the town, new stands should not impede pedestrians, especially on narrow footways. It will also be necessary to consider the needs of families with young children, disabled cyclists and adapted trailer bikes. To future proof the strategy, they also discussed electric charging points for e-bikes and provision to refill water bottles. One cyclist commented that “we considered that each cycle parking or routing facility should be signed ‘loud and proud’ so that a potential user doesn’t need local knowledge to find and utilise them. A tall sign on the Sheffield stands, a local area map at strategic points detailing the pedestrian and cycling access and facilities, would help to make it clear that the town not only provides for cycling, it actively welcomes it”. Cycle parking is just one element of the overall strategy. The intention is to link this with other strategies aimed at improving the town and in particular the town centre.

It is the intention of the Working Group to meet on Zoom next to consider the information that has been gathered and draw up a plan. In the meantime, it is still possible for those with views on the subject to contribute via www.surveymonkey.com/r/XDM8DXK. Finally, why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 9am, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles, with a café stop.

Despite the rain it was a fantastic day and a truly memorable experience!

The miles flew by as I was joined by a different running partner for each of the 26 miles around Hadleigh.

I finished in 4 hours 32 and the kind generosity of so many people has helped me raise just over £6000 for the Evelina Children’s Hospital who saved my great niece Sienna’s life when she was just a few weeks old, and Bumblebees Children’s Charity, who do such an amazing job of continuing to support Sienna and other children with additional needs.

PICTURE OF THE MONTH This view of the High Street is looking south towards Station Road was taken some time between 1900-1910. Can you recognize the location, the building at the left looks familiar but what is the dominating building beyond?

The White Lion Hotel is shown at the left and what was to become Barclays Bank next with its iron railings removed for the war effort during the Second World War. The next, and imposing building was Cooks Emporium and was probably the largest shop in the town. John Cook was owner in 1864 and traded as a grocer and draper. He was followed by his son, Robert Hyatt Cook who increased the range to include wines and spirits, as a warehouseman, to being undertakers. The Cook family were also farmers and resided at French’s Farm. The store closed during the 1930s and was demolished soon after the Second World War. The High Street Car-Park now occupies the site.

At the entrance to the Market Place to the right is shown the Hadleigh Post Office.

The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council, Archives Department, The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh IP7 5DN. A team of experienced volunteers catalogue and transcribe its large number of documents and images, all of which are held in archive-approved conditions. Visitors are welcome by appointment.

Visitors can scrap the paper with new digital parking Motorists parking in Babergh and Mid Suffolk can now scrap their paper ticket and go digital – to help protect their health and the environment. Visitors needing to drive into the districts to shop local, instead of walking or cycling, can now choose to go paperless in the councils’ ticketed car parks. Thanks to the introduction of MiPermit, Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s shoppers can now help to reduce waste by opting for a digital ticket instead. With around a million visits made to the councilowned car parks each year, opting for MiPermit could save millions of pieces of paper going in the bin annually.

Virtual tickets are available online, via the MiPermit app, by phone, and by text both in advance and on the day – allowing visitors to choose an option to suit them. Tickets and further information can be obtained via the councils MiPermit portal. Further electric vehicle charging points across the districts, and upgrading car park machines to include a card payment option, continue to be explored.

As many of you will already know my dad, Kenny Scarff passed away in August. His funeral was held at St Mary’s in September under Covid restrictions with limited numbers but as a family we were overwhelmed by the support shown by the people of Hadleigh lining the route along Angel Street and standing socially distanced outside the church.

It was particularly moving to hear the applause as we passed the end of Long Bessells where dad had worked in the butchers for so many years. I think that is when my own tears bubbled over.

Our family’s butchery legacy in Hadleigh spans over 100 years starting way back in 1890 when Henry and Zoe Scarff arrived here to establish their shop. Their second son Cecil carried on the family tradition and, after a short break when Cecil died, there was once more a Scarff butcher in town when my dad Kenny started his own apprenticeship after leaving school at 14.

He learnt his trade well becoming one of the most respected butchers in the town.

With a twinkle in his eye, nothing was too much trouble for his valued customers, he even sold our Christmas turkey on more than one occasion! He would slide on the sawdust, offer advice on the best cuts of meat for every occasion and he unquestionably made the best sausages in town.

Kenneth Scarff was born in December 1943, the nineth child of Cecil and Jessie, although two of his siblings had died as infants before he was born. He was the only child not to have a middle name, the family joke being they had run out of names by the time he was born.

Dad lived at 59 George Street as a child, a house no longer there since Inkerman Close was built. He went to school in Bridge Street, he never moved far, and by the end of his butchery career he was living above the shop in Long Bessells.

Officially called Hadleigh Food Services at the time it was much better known as Kenny’s and Molly’s. We just called it “the shop”. Mum and dad managed it together for 14 years, a mammoth undertaking for a couple who had no formal academic qualifications between them but something they both flourished at.

Dad met and courted my mum Pauline in the sixties. He would take her gifts of meat to test her culinary skills. She passed with flying colours and they married in September 1966. Two years later I was born, followed by my brother Marcus in 1970 - the family was complete.

When we were younger, I remember dad spending much of his time in the garden or playing darts and crib at the pub. But as his business responsibilities increased, he could be found not only on the shop floor serving customers during the day but regularly cleaning the shop floor in the evenings as well as many other tasks behind the scenes, he rarely stopped.

Eventually when the lease was up he, almost reluctantly, retired, I think he was always worried about letting his loyal customers down.

However retirement suited him; his garden flourished although his best days at darts were behind him. He finally had the chance to travel with 2 trips to New Zealand as well as various holidays in Europe. He had a close group of friends to socialise with as well as hosting many family gatherings to keep the Scarff clan together. He rang each one every week without fail at a certain time.

His own family was growing too with 3 grandsons and an “adopted” granddaughter added into the mix and he was proud of every one.

He first became ill in 2014 and was diagnosed with cancer, he beat it the first time round but when it returned it was inoperable and he started chemotherapy. The staff at Ipswich hospital was amazing throughout, and dad with his usual cheery smile was a big hit with the nurses, although mum made cakes and sausage rolls sometimes for him to take to chemo sessions which no doubt helped.

Eventually the treatment wasn’t enough and bravely dad made decisions about what he wanted. Most important he wanted to be at home to allow friends and family to visit without restrictions.

We sat down as a family to plan his final wishes for a celebratory thanksgiving service, no flowers except a single red rose to be laid on his coffin from mum, the love of his life for over 50 years.

In lieu of flowers we asked for donations to go to Macmillan Cancer Support. It is a testament to dad’s character that we raised over £1700, a truly staggering total.

One short sentence at the end of this hardly seems enough words but we want to thank EVERYONE who donated, sent cards and letters, lined the streets, and have supported us in so many ways. It has meant a lot at this difficult time.

Hurrah - 2020 Is Nearly Over!

‘Go, Tony, Go!’ is a children’s picture book, celebrating the exploits of fiveyear-old fundraiser Tony Hudgell who had to have both his legs amputated after a difficult start in his infancy. Back in June, Tony hit the headlines after completing a ten kilometre walk on his prosthetic legs, raising money for Evelina London, Children’s Hospital, where he was treated by consultant surgeon Michail Kokkinakis.

Tony had been inspired by Captain Tom Moore’s walk, and was determined to make people focus on his ability and not see the disability. He is an incredibly determined individual who appears not to recognise the words, ‘you cannot’.

Tony, in turn, inspired former teacher, Sarah Kingdon-Ward, to write a children’s story featuring the irrepressible young hero, who set out to raise £500 for Evelina London, and has now raised well over a million pounds.

With illustrations by 13 year-old Evie Thacker, and digital editing by local artist Joanne Mitchell, the book contains bright and cheerful pictures showing the young hero Tony in real and imagined scenes, together with questions posed to the reader on every page to encourage an immersive reading experience.

Proceeds from the sale of the book, which will be launched in early November, will go to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. It will come as a high -quality square format hardcover book with sewn binding and will retail for £6.99.

Mayor’s Update It seems an awfully long time since life was normal. So many things we used to take for granted cannot happen at the moment – and who knows when we will be able to hold a party, visit a busy pub or club, or even be part of a big crowd at a football match? We also have to face the fact that the next few months offer little hope of any improvement, and it would be easy to let this get us down.

But this winter we will have some experience of what dealing with the pandemic means as it again threatens to take hold. We saw in the spring our whole town come together to help one another, as volunteers worked tirelessly to help people compelled to selfisolate or shield themselves – of whom I was one. We faced a very testing time, and we came through it because of the kindness and sense of community of our town. It is a great pity that something similar may be needed again, but we know we can do it.

Something we can all do to help in the meantime is to think about what we want for Hadleigh in the future, and look beyond the next few months – even if it seems a bit like tempting fate, we should carry on planning for all those events which bring our town together, and which we so badly missed this year. Part of this looking forward is about shaking off the problems of the past. We do not help ourselves by staring constantly back at old controversies and refusing to let them die a decent but unlamented death. It is only 18 months since the new council took office, but the issues we inherited are slowly being resolved, and nothing is gained by pointing fingers and demanding retribution. What matters is what is to come, and how we can shape it for Hadleigh’s greatest benefit. Inevitably, there will be new hurdles to jump – for instance, just as our local businesses began to recover their confidence, we heard of the plan to close our last remaining bank branch. I have written to our MP and to Babergh and Suffolk councils asking for their support in opposing this.

Minutes of full council meetings will soon be appearing again in the HCN. I hope each month I am in office to bring before you here an issue that it would be good for all of us to think about. Please let me or your town councillors know any ideas you have, by writing or emailing or by attending council meetings (via teleconference until further notice of course). Please be constructive and civil, and be assured that your ideas and questions will be responded to.

Above all, remember that we showed in the spring that the worst of times brings out the best in us all.

Local couple continue unique vision for rural Suffolk Art Gallery Brett Gallery is situated in the pretty Suffolk village of Monks Eleigh. It is part of Bridge Farm Barns, a collection of several unique and independent retail businesses offering the customer an unparalleled selection of distinctive products and good service. The outlets include a tea room, gift shop, Sarah’s Attic vintage collectables, OliVen quilting and felting as well as a garden nursery, the Outrageous Cake Company and Lavenham Falconry. It all began life as the family concern of ‘Corncraft’ in 1970.

One of the founders, Win Gage, opened Brett Gallery in 2015 with the aim of promoting the work of locally based artists and crafts people. There are some 35 regular East Anglian Exhibitors displaying a range of work covering original fine art and prints, pottery, jewellery, glass, photography, metal art and wood.

Win had decided to retire at the end of March 2020 and this now well-established centre was then to have been taken on by husband and wife team, Suzanne Perry and John Reading who intend to continue to source works that fit into this bracket.

Along came the pandemic when the Gallery had to close.

Following the deferral of the sale of the Gallery, its gradual re-opening alongside Corncraft Tea Room, proved to be more successful quicker than anticipated and it is now open again building on Win's vision, this time with the extended opening hours of Tuesdays to Sundays, 10.30 to 16.30.

From October, John and Sue took over the reigns, with a busy first week which coincided with the neighbouring monthly Saturday Vintage market. These extended hours are accompanied by a refresh of exhibits as well as the introduction of some new artists. Win will continue to assist for one day a week and Mary, a founding member of staff, has asked to stay with the Gallery, working two days each week. In early 2021, the new owners intend to expand the Exhibition area.

Hadleigh Walkers Unfortunately, we were unable to walk in October due to the rule of 6, the fact that we are not an insured organised sporting group and the walk leaders being in their 70’s and wish to be around for their 80’s. Therefore, our organised monthly walks will be discontinued for the foreseeable future. We are still regularly planning and checking out suitable routes and can provide maps for any who want to walk in their own small groups. Just email us through the website contact page and we’ll be delighted to send on a map. November’s walk would have started and ended at Hintlesham but this time heading south (a distance of circa 10 miles).

November’s Advice Page Q. I’d like some advice on keeping my energy bills down please. I work in admin for a big corporation. We’ve been working from home since lockdown and have been told we’ll not be back in the office before January at the earliest. Now the weather has turned, I’m freezing sitting here all day in front of my computer! I’m worried if I turn the heating up my bills are going to go through the roof!

I’m sorry this is causing you to worry. However, fortunately, there’s lots you can do to keep bills down.

A. Firstly, see if you can get a better deal by changing your energy supplier.

However, as well as comparing prices, it’s a good idea to check the customer service record of a company before switching. Citizens Advice has a price comparison tool on its website www.citizensadvice.org.uk, and our star rating assesses the customer service records of the 40 biggest companies.

There are also little, everyday things that can help, such as making sure televisions and other devices are switched off and not left on standby; washing clothes on a lower temperature; and only filling the kettle with the water you need.

You’re right in another way about bills going through the roof - and the walls. One way of cutting costs in the long term is to invest in good insulation - or ask your landlord to do so.

If your pay is close to the national minimum wage, the extra costs of working from home could be counted as a pay cut and bring you below the legal level. Talk to your manager or HR department, or your union rep if that feels more comfortable.

Finally, your employer should pay for any costs connected to your health and safety - such as a suitable chair for work at a computer. It’s also worth looking at your employer’s expenses policy, you may be able to claim for several other things, such as printer ink or telephone line rental.

Local History Award for Sue Andrews The British Association for Local History has accorded an award for 2020 to Sue Andrews of Bildeston for her 5000 word essay entitled ‘Why didn’t the parish of Hadleigh join Cosford Incorporation in 1779?’

Accompanied by a meal and travel expenses, the award presentation is usually made in June at the Association’s Annual Conference held in London. However this year, a certificate was sent in the post. In her essay, Sue looks at the complexities involved in joining together seventeen parishes to form Cosford Incorporation and seeks to explain why Hadleigh refused to participate in this local scheme to support the poor, which involved erecting one large workhouse at Semer for all paupers in the newly-formed administrative district.

She shows how Hadleigh was able to remain independent as funds came from 39 privately-funded charities, which included providing 38 almshouses and a pest house, and publicly-funded poor rates that maintained the parish workhouse. In addition, both sources of income supported the poor in their own homes.

Sue has always been very keen on local history and formerly gave talks, ran adulteducation classes and for sixteen years was honorary joint-archivist at Hadleigh Archive. However, she realised that as her mobility was diminishing, she would not be able to continue so, in 2010 launched The Hadleigh Historian. The magazine is about to celebrate its tenth anniversary with an additional issue for which Sue is asking nine friends to join with her to show the activities of researching, transcribing, translating, cataloguing, curating, recording, writing, publishing and presenting Hadleigh’s rich history.

As well as information on how to become involved, articles include the story of Hadleigh’s last station master; playtime for pupils at Station Road Council School; Hadleigh Exiles on the continent in the 1550’; churchwardens of St Mary’s; and Sue’s award-winning piece. Although the current corona-virus pandemic has currently put everything on hold, it is hoped that this special-issue magazine entitled Bringing the past to life will encourage even moor people to participate when study groups and societies start their meetings and activities again and archives re-open for research.

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We are a small local charity consisting of three unpaid trustees, registered with the Charities Commission under number 1162885.

Our declared aim is: The relief of financial hardship, particularly fuel poverty, of people living in and around Hadleigh, by providing funds for the purchase and distribution of supplies such as blankets, coal, clothing, electric blankets, flasks, hot water bottles etc. as well as assisting in the purchase of fuel and helping with the cost of emergency repairs of heating systems to enable people to “Survive Winter in Hadleigh”.

To date the charity has: 1) Purchased and distributed blankets, clothing, thermal underwear and socks and replaced an electric blanket heavily relied on by an old lady.

2) Purchased and distributed coal some of which was kindly donated by somebody converting from solid fuel to gas central heating.

3) Financially assisted people, particularly the elderly, to afford their heating bills a) One lady was frightened to switch on her electric fire for fear she had not set enough aside to meet the bill. b) Another elderly lady, caring for her terminally ill son, feared she could not afford the bill for oil for the forthcoming winter. c) An elderly couple; the husband had been in hospital for major surgery, was recovering at home but his wife was worried that she would not be able to keep the house warm enough during his convalescence.

4) Purchased warm clothing to enable a disabled young lady pursue her passion for horse riding over the winter months.

5) Paid for the servicing of a mobility scooter which is the only means an infirm couple, living on the fringe of Hadleigh, have of getting into the town.

6) Purchased and distributed “panic alarms” particularly for the elderly to enable them to bring attention and raise help in the event of a fall or in times of stress.

As we were informed by the government, Covid has not gone away: indeed the anticipated ‘second wave’ is now upon us. Once again we are reminded of the necessity to respect social distancing, an important common sense precaution.

Pity then, that the temporary measures installed in our High Street to implement this safeguard have been so hastily removed. It seems that the various objections leading to this questionable decision revolved around parking and traffic flow issues rather than the principal reason initially stated. The small inconvenience of not being able to park outside a favourite shop for instance, (perhaps on a yellow line, whereas, for those in real need, disabled parking was protected) should never have been factored into the latest decision. Nor should the one-way traffic system have influenced those concerned as this was generally well managed.

Also, objection on the grounds of aesthetics is something that, if the scheme had been allowed to continue, could have been addressed and implemented.

The distancing and being able to safely walk past other pedestrians (including buggies and mobility vehicles) without having to step into a doorway or the road was the prime consideration and should have been the overriding factor in keeping the barriers. I feel that those concerned have acted on petty complaints and have missed a great opportunity for the town to have built on this scheme as a foundation for a more pleasant semi-pedestrianised High Street which in time could have fully embraced cafe culture and other social opportunities.

Maybe in the current circumstances, it may not be too late?

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre HANDS, FACE, SPACE! Where have we heard that before? The team at Shelley has it all in order. It doesn’t mean we are open to all, but we are doing what we can, and some of the rules have been eased since I last wrote. There is still no ‘side walking’ such as you see on out logo, but our volunteers are allowed to touch the riders if necessary. So we can open up to a few more riders, but outside in the open air of course.

Babs and I are still completely locked down.

The amazing horses and ponies carry on as normal, up to their knees in mud at all the field gates but finding grass to nibble on the slopes, generating lots of you-know-what for the volunteers to pick up.

The new arrivals are settling in well. The lack of work has enabled Lyn to give them extra time to watch and learn from the ‘old’ hands, so they appear really chilled, and look relaxed.

With no clients allowed into the yard (yes, they are still arriving round the back past the midden) its all very orderly and quiet. I am pushed to pick up the gossip but I have noticed the pong of hand sanitizer. The live herd seems to take even this new smell in its stride.

Obviously this winter will be challenging to all our human friends. November brings loud pops and bangs to us all. We just hope you stay safe and happy, enjoy yourselves as much as possible without endangering the whole county!

Christmas Cheer Normally at this time of year, The Christmas Present Trust would be gathering an army of volunteers to help us deliver our Christmas Day meal and entertainment for anyone in Hadleigh and surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family and friends – but not this year.

Due to the COVID restrictions, we are unable to hold our usual party and instead we have decided to deliver Christmas cheer in the form of a traditional Christmas meal (or dietary alternative) a smiling face, (albeit wearing a mask) and who knows, maybe a carol on the doorstep?

We are still looking for volunteers to deliver the meals between 12pm and 1:30pm, but we are mainly looking for people who may benefit from this service. The only criteria we have is that, for whatever reason, you cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day. You may be a small family who have no relatives nearby; you may be in the forces and stationed away from home; you may live by yourself: whatever the reason we would like to help make your Christmas Day. This a completely free service, and we are truly grateful to the people of Hadleigh, businesses and local charitable organisations that make this happen, and of course to our wonderful volunteers for their continued support and enthusiasm.

Babergh Update I thought you might find it helpful to have an update on some of the activities happening at Babergh recently.

Covid-19 These have been difficult times for many people – I hope that you, your family and friends have not been severely affected during this period and have found the support you need. If you do need assistance, or know someone that does, please contact me.

Babergh was responsible for allocating and distributing many of the Discretionary Business Grants and other grants during Covid-19. Officers stepped up very quickly and worked night and day to provide all types of back up and support to businesses, charities, leisure organisations and individuals. While Babergh had previously reported that there were no homeless people in the district prior to lockdown, the lockdown resulted in many people being unable to continue living in the perhaps temporary accommodation they were living in, possibly ‘sofa surfing’. This resulted in many people being newly categorised homeless and Babergh Mid Suffolk were able to provide a home for these people in hotels and other accommodation. The government has since provided further funding to ensure that these people do not return to living on the streets.

Babergh Councillors and officers have been ‘working virtually’ since March and council, cabinet and committee meetings will continue to be held virtually until 6th May 2021 unless legislation is repealed earlier.

Chairman I was honoured to be selected by my fellow councillors at the Annual Meeting of the Council on 22nd September 2020 as Chairman of Babergh District Council for a second term. (The Annual Meeting would usually be held in May, but all such meetings were permitted by the Government to be postponed until a later date or even until May 2021.) My charities are Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Hadleigh Scouts and Hadleigh Guides. I have been chairing Full Council Meetings virtually.

Railway Walk Car Park The Railway Walk car park has been in a poor state for some time now, with flooding occurring during rain, potholes and the grassed area becoming a mud bath. I have been pressing for a very long time to have this car park looked at (it was even in my manifesto). Public Realm and Civil Engineering have now visited the site. A blocked drain was discovered, among other problems.

Remedial action will be scheduled for 2021 (the delay due to budget constraints) to deal with the problems, including resurfacing, fencing and seeding. Parking restrictions will also take place to prevent over-crowding and long-term parking by people who are not using the Railway Walk.

Stickers/Notices At Car Parks The confusing stickers that appeared in our car parks are being looked in to. I hope that the outcome of a recent meeting will be new, clearer notices, so that visitors can easily understand that parking for under three hours is free and payment after that can be made following the instructions on the notice. There is also the option of using the system for free parking. I reiterate, that the three hours free parking in Hadleigh car parks remains in place.

Extra Ordinary Council Meeting Although not yet confirmed, an Extra Ordinary Council Meeting has been called for 10th November 2020 to debate the Joint Local Plan.

Innovation Awards A new awards event has been launched by Babergh – The Innovation Awards 2020. This was intended to be an in-person event to be held in June, but in line with current laws, this will now be a virtual event to be held on Tuesday 3rd November. The awards are for businesses based in Babergh and Mid Suffolk who want to showcase how they are using innovative practices, cutting edge technology, sustainable solutions or delivering outstanding customer service.

Hadleigh Councillors were asked to nominate for the High Street awards – I nominated Ferguson’s Deli for outstanding customer service. My fellow councillors both nominated Andrew’s Butchers. Nominations were open to all, but unfortunately will be closed by the time this is published.

Persimmon Site I visited the Persimmon offices (with Cllr Mick Fraser) to discuss the third phase of the Persimmon development (not the phase that is shortly to be released). The site design is based on a village green concept and looks quite different from other Persimmon developments. It is a mix of bungalows, flats and houses, with a high percentage of affordable homes. I am still fighting for a large expanse of green common land for the use of the community and I am hoping that Persimmon is listening as I have said I will not give the development my full support otherwise.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I do entirely appreciate that for many of you the dizzying sense that Coronavirus rules and guidance constantly change has been a frustration. When the message was ‘stay at home’ it was simple but also blunt. The fact is if you lump everyone together with one straightforward instruction policy, the making is always easier but that is clearly no longer the ideal solution for every part of the country, leading to variation and nuance – as well as inevitable complexity. The best thing to do if you are unsure of rules in our locality is to check at www.gov.uk/find-coronaviruslocal-restrictions.

Whatever the rules at any given time we must avoid alarmism. There has been a tendency for particular graphs or statistics to get blown out of proportion, leading to undue fear and scaremongering. Covid remains a very serious illness and the pandemic has presented immense problems for Governments around the world.

But the basic truth has not changed that if we each do our bit as far as possible to follow the guidelines – face masks; distancing; washing hands etc – then we will reduce the virus’s actual impact on our society.

I appreciate that this is once again a very difficult time for local businesses, with the second wave and its associated restrictions bringing further huge uncertainty for all firms, and particular challenges for those in directly affected sectors, especially hospitality. On the plus side, the Chancellor has announced a new set of interventions, including further wage and grant support for businesses forced to shut. Crucially for company cash flow we have provided much longer terms to repay the Covid-related Government ‘bounce back’ loans that have supported so many firms.

Locally, we have seen the vacant Philips Avent factory in Glemsford purchased by new owners to make chocolate, creating new jobs and investment. We have also seen millions of pounds awarded to two brilliant cultural venues in Sudbury: The Quay Theatre and St Peter’s. One day we will again be removing rather than restoring freedoms, and when that time comes, such attractions will once more have a central part to play in our lives.

I would like to thank all those fine Hadleigh residents who donated hygiene supplies to send to the refugees in the Moria camp in Greece. They are already struggling to make a go of things having fled the violence in Syria and a large part of the camp has been destroyed by fire. Now the potential disaster of a Covid outbreak hangs over them and a shipment of soaps, toothpaste, nappies etc. will make things a little more bearable. Hadleigh joined with other communities in Suffolk and around the country to send a message of care. It's good to know that, despite our own concerns, there is care for our more distant neighbours.

French’s Care Haven Hello to all new readers and those who have been following our ups, downs, relocations and progress over the years. I would like to let you hear from some of our volunteers, over the next few editions.

Some of our helpers work full time and look at days up at the farm as a refreshing break, Like Sharon Bell pictured here along with her quote and we have other volunteers who have retired and are enjoying being part of our team and there are younger people we help that struggle with their mental health. French’s give meaningful work, teach new skills in animal husbandry and maintenance, help people to relax, enjoy and see a brighter side to life, while improving their physical and mental wellbeing along the way. As a qualified NLP coach on the human side, I am always there to listen and work with anyone who needs someone to help them through their difficult times. Our base is set in picturesque countryside and along with all our beautiful animals on the farm, it is an ideal setting.

Hi I’m Sharon and I volunteer on a Saturday at French’s Care Haven.The people that know me have heard for many years saying “my goal is to have some donkeys in my back garden that would be part of my family�. As I’m growing older this goal wasn’t looking promising. My life changed last year and I moved back to Suffolk. I’m a great believer in fate and looking through the Hadleigh magazine a picture of a donkey caught my eye. I read on and realised there was a rescue centre on my doorstep. I immediately emailed Jann and we arranged a meeting.

To my delight Jann and I just clicked, 2 mature single crazy females (sorry Jann).

Jann introduced me to the donkeys, ponies and horses and my goal was sorted.

Jann knew she had a beginner on her hands and over the past 8 months has patiently taught me not only how to look after these animals, but to give these beautiful animals the love, care and pampering they deserve in their later life.

They all have their individual backgrounds, some at the top of their game in their prime and now in retirement they are in the best place to live out in style and love. Jann’s passion and dedication is infectious and I am so happy and proud to be a part of French’s Care Haven. If I could I would be there every day.

I work fulltime in Occupational Therapy within a Mental Health setting and after a busy week my sanctuary is my Saturday’s with the animals. I can immerse myself, forget the hectic week and give these so deserving animals the love and care they deserve.

This is my therapy.

Well folks its been a tough eight months for everyone and I guess the next six months will be just as challenging. Pubs have been one of the hardest hit businesses, especially those with small or very limited food offers. The news that pubs could reopen on the 4th July was great for all, both customers and landlords, however the reduction in trading times to the current 10.00pm closure was a big negative. Not only did it take a few hours off the trading day, it sent a negative message to the public about pubs and safety issues surrounding Covid 19. This was unjust, and a recent report released by SAGE (the governments very own Covid advisory panel) suggests that there is little or no evidence to support the early closing times. In fact, other reports suggest that it has actually had a negative impact as we have seen crowded streets, taxi offices, kebab shops, public transport etc as pub and restaurant goers all head home at the same time.

Pubs have done and are doing a wonderful job in meeting customers needs and providing some form of ‘normality and sanity’, especially local community pubs.

They are following the rules, keeping up hygiene standards and keeping us all safe. Now more than ever we need our local population to support their local pub.

There are only a few pubs left in Hadleigh and only one or two truly ‘community style’ pubs.

The Cock Inn being one is focused purely toward the local community, people who live nearby, people from Hadleigh and local surrounding areas. Our customers visit to meet friends, enjoy cask conditioned ales (which you can’t really do at home) chat, watch sport, play darts, pool and bar billiards. We had quiz nights, buskers evenings and live music. Sure, this will all return in the future but in the meantime we are still hoping to see you. While Covid is a serious concern, lets not allow it to ruin local economies and businesses. Lets keep in touch with our friends and have a beer or wine together while keeping safe.

Thousands of pubs will close as a consequence of this pandemic and a large number will be in local communities, small towns and villages. We can all do a little bit to help local business, so lets all safely shop locally, eat locally and have a beer locally.

Thursday 17th September 2020 via videoconferencing MINUTES 1: Opening Address a) The Town Council Manager opened the meeting and informed people that the meeting would be recorded. Councillors attending: Beggerow, Gordon, Gregg, Knock, Minns (who became Chair in the meeting), Schleip, Talbot, Hinton. Also in attendance: The Town Council Manager, Town Council Administrator and 21 members of the public. b) Councillors noted the resignations of Cllrs Allan, Allman and Cammack. c) Councillors Gregg and Knock nominated Councillor Beggerow, and Councillors Beggerow and Hinton nominated Councillor Minns for the position of Mayor.

Councillor Beggerow stated that he was not willing to be nominated for the post of Mayor; Councillor Minns confirmed that he would be willing to be nominated for the post of Mayor. Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, Seconded by Councillor Hinton, Councillor Minns was elected as Hadleigh Town Council Mayor Councillor Minns took over the chairmanship of the meeting. He advised that the Town had been through difficult times, and it had not been an easy tenure for the two previous Mayors or the office staff. He asked that Councillors modified their behaviour and recover the kindness seen during lockdown for the good of the community. d) Apologies for absence were received from Councillor McLeod. Apologies were also received from District Councillors Grandon and Fraser. e) There were no declarations of pecuniary or non-pecuniary interest f) There were no considerations of requests for dispensations.

2: Election of a Deputy Mayor Proposed by Councillor Hinton, seconded by Councillor Knock, Councillor Gregg was elected as Deputy Town Mayor.

3: Public Forum A member of the public wished to congratulate the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor on their elections, and also to thank Steve Allman and the Town Council Manager for all their work to date in ensuring that paperwork and minutes were brought up to date. Councillor Schleip joined the meeting at 19.10.

4: Minutes The minutes of the Full Council meeting on Thursday 20th August 2020 were considered. Councillor Beggerow noted a typographical error that said “cold” instead of “could”. Proposed by Councillor Hinton, Seconded by Councillor Bayliss, the minutes of the Full Council meeting on Thursday 20th August 2020 with spelling corrections were accepted as a true record.

The minutes of the Full Council meeting on Thursday 27th August 2020 were discussed. With regard to item 7; the Mayor had proposed Councillor Knock be removed from the meeting. Councillor Knock requested that this be amended to minute that the motion was not supported. Cllr Knock also requested that the minute stating his abstention be removed as it was not a recorded vote. Proposed

by Councillor Hinton, seconded by Councillor Beggerow, the minutes of the Full Council meeting on Thursday 27th August 2020 with amendments were accepted as a true record.

5: Reports Suffolk County Council & Babergh District Council Ward Councilors were not present at the meeting.

6: Finance (TCM) a) Clarification was requested on £8.52 for the Public Works Loan Board, and details of the Cemetery Lodge Valuation. Proposed by Councillor Minns and Seconded by Councillor Hinton it was resolved to approve the payment schedules in full. b) Proposed by Councillor Beggerow and Seconded by Councillor Gregg it was agreed to implement the 2020 National Joint Council (NJC ) for Local Government Services agreement with the National Employers and NJC Trade Union for new pay scales for 2020-2021, that the new pay scales be implemented from 1st April 2020 with increases to be back dated to April 2020. c) A discussion took place around the need for former Councillor Allan to continue as a bank signatory on pre-approved payments until 31st December 2020 or until new bank signatories have been successfully added to the Hadleigh Town Council and Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity Bank accounts. It was not seen to be best practice and was felt to be contrary to Good Councillor Guidance, but that the Council had no choice because previous signatories had resigned. It was confirmed that SALC had been approached and whilst agreeing it was not best practice, opined that it was the only solution. Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Gordon it was resolved that payment transactions would preferably be done by cheque and where this is not possible that former Councillor Helen Allan will to continue to be a bank signatory until new bank signatories have been added to the bank accounts. d) Proposed by Councillor Minns and Seconded by Councillor Beggerow it was unanimously agreed that all willing Councillors become bank signatories for the Town Council and the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. e) A discussion took place around the need for a budget of £10,000 for potential managerial support for office staff until the new Town Council Manager is in post.

Whilst it was felt that this would allow things to be dealt with in a timely manner, and that office staff should feel supported through this difficult period, as any decision would need to be agreed by Full Council. Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Gregg it, was unanimously agreed to move onto the next agenda item.

11a: Committee workload The chair moved Item 11a) up the agenda. Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Beggerow it was agreed to suspend the Town Matters Committee meetings until May 2021.

7: Committee membership As Chair of the Council Matters Committee, Councillor Beggerow suggested 5 Councillors on the committee. Councillor Gregg suggested that Councillor McLeod may be wiling to sit on the Committee but is absent, so Councillor Bayliss advised he would be willing if Councillor McLeod declined the role. Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Gregg it was agreed that Councillor McLeod join the Committee; if he was unable to then Councillor Bayliss would join the Committee. Councillor Talbot, as chair of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity Committee was agreeable to the committee remaining at 5. Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, seconded by Councillor Minns, it was unanimously agreed that Councillor Gordon would join the planning committee. Councillors Gregg and Talbot put themselves forward to be on the HR Panel. Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Knock it was agreed that Councillors Gregg and Talbot join the HR Panel.

8: Nominees and Representatives Proposed by Councillor Bayliss, seconded by Councillor Beggerow it was unanimously agreed that Councillor Gregg be the Town Council representative in the Hadleigh Steering Group.

There were no additional nominees for the Hadleigh Elderly People Welfare Committee, with the Council’s representation remaining at one. Proposed by Councillor Knock and seconded by Councillor Hinton it was unanimously agreed that Councillor Minns be the Town Council Twinning representative. Proposed by Councillor Gregg, seconded by Councillor Schleip it was unanimously agreed that Councillor Beggerow be the Town Council representative on the Suffolk Association of Local Councils. Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, seconded by Councillor Bayliss it was unanimously agreed that Councillor Minns be the Town Council representative on the Woollen Towns Association.

It was felt that the Hadleigh Vision remit was to find common ground for Hadleigh in conjunction with the community, with part of the vision being the Neighbourhood Plan. Councillors Beggerow, Schleip and Talbot put themselves forward as representatives with Councillor Beggerow obtaining 8 votes, Councillor Talbot 7 votes and Councillor Schleip 4 votes. Proposed by Councillor Schleip, seconded

by Councillor Bayliss it was agreed that Councillors Beggerow and Talbot represent the Town Council on Hadleigh Vision.

9: Town Council Manager A discussion took place around the need for the Town Council to have both a Town Council Manager and a Town Clerk, and the HR Panel should have the agreement to undertake a programme of recruit, with the recommendation being taken to Full Council. Councillor Knock requested a recorded vote. Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, seconded by Councillor Schleip, it was resolved that the HR Panel will undertake a programme of recruitment for a new Town Council Manager, and that the Panel will make a recommendation to Full Council. For: Councillors Bayliss, Beggerow, Gordon, Hinton, Minns, Schleip, Against: Councillor Knock, Abstain: Councillor Gregg.

10: Temporary Town Council Manager It was heard that with the departure of the Town Council Manager, the Council must appoint a Proper Officer and Responsible Financial Officer. The Town Council Manager gave assurances that the Town Council Administrator would be such an appropriate person. Councillor Gregg requested a recorded vote.

Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Bayliss, it was resolved that that the Town Council Administrator will take on the role of Town Council Manager (TCM) until a new TCM is recruited, and for the avoidance of doubt will take on the role as the Responsible Financial Officer (RFO) and Proper Officer (PO) at the TCM pay scale. For Councillors Bayliss, Beggerow, Gordon, Hinton, Knock, Minns, Schleip, Talbot. Against: none. Abstain: Councillor Gregg.

11: Committee workload Matter a) was dealt with earlier in the meeting. A discussion took place around the inclusion of minor and householder planning applications on the Planning Advisory Committee agendas. Proposed by Councillor Minns and seconded by Councillor Beggerow it was agreed to move onto the next agenda item.

12: Keyholder Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, seconded by Councillor Schleip it was unanimously agreed that Councillor Minns would become the keyholder.

13: Suspension of Standing Order 7 Proposed by Councillor Schleip, seconded by Councillor Beggerow it was agreed to suspend Standing Order 7 in relation to item 14 of the Agenda.

14: Amendment to Schedule of delegations and Terms of Reference a) After a long discussion Proposed by Councillor Minns, Seconded by Councillor Gregg it was agreed to defer the item to another meeting. b) Proposed by Councillor Gregg, seconded by Councillor Beggerow it was agreed to remove references to Working Groups not being governed by Standing Orders, and to add that “a Working Group must be established using a template form that establishes its terms of reference”. c) A discussion took place around the contents of the Working Group template form and who would be best placed to determine the membership. Proposed by Councillor Hinton, seconded by Councillor Gregg it was agreed to adopt the new template form for establishing a Working Group with the suggested amendments.

Thanks Councillor Minns expressed his thanks to the Town Council Manager for the long hours worked, the effort put in the and the number of things which had been progressed during his tenure. It was proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Schleip and unanimously agreed that a formal vote of thanks be given the Town Council Manager.

15: Future Meetings The next scheduled Full Council meeting was confirmed to be on Thursday 15th October 2020 at 7.00pm.

Looking After The River Brett We all know and love the River Brett that flows through Hadleigh and its villages. We enjoy the riverside walks, the familiar geese and swans and the lovely Toppesfield Bridge. It worries us too, the duck weed, the flooding risk in winter and the low, stagnant levels in the summer. How healthy is our river? Do we need to do more to look after it?

Recently the Environment Agency published the latest water quality results for rivers in England for 2016-19. Only 16% of our waterways are in good ecological health and none achieved good chemical status. There has been no improvement since 2016. The report on the River Brett gives cause for concern. Overall it only achieved ‘moderate’ rather than ‘good’ for ecological and chemical health and failed for the presence of hazardous substances. The Brett was prevented from reaching ‘good’ because of the quality of plants and fish, the flow and levels of water, sewage, land drainage and runoff (both agricultural and urban). As well as impacts from within the Hadleigh area, there are also potential upstream causes and downstream effects and a number of agencies and people involved (the Environment Agency, Anglian Water, local government, landowners etc). All government agencies are under pressure from cutbacks so, as well as lobbying for change, we are thinking about what HEAT, as a community group, can do. For a start we can all look at our personal choices. Our priorities are: • thinking about the ‘3 Ps’ when we flush the toilet (only put pee, poo and toilet paper down the pan) • avoiding using pesticides and insecticides in our gardens, allotments and on driveways and paths • disposing of waste sensibly • only pour water into the drain • using less and phosphate free detergent • report any pollution, unusual river flow, badly damaged river banks or fish in distress to the Environment Agency hotline 0800 807060 HEAT will be looking to do more to protect our lovely river and its precious ecology. Hadleigh & District Garden Club One of the first talks I went to at the garden club, several years ago now, was about bees and how to provide food for them all year round, the speaker was someone from The Place For Plants in East Bergholt.

I can't remember her name but I do remember that she was an extremely good speaker and that the speaker's table was covered with examples of shrubs and perennials for all seasons.

She began in January with the importance of bulbs and went on through the year ending with the flowers of ivy during the winter. There is usually a wide variety of plants around in the spring and summer but it is important to provide sources of nectar into the autumn and winter too.

The photo shows a caryopteris plant being visited by a very enthusiastic bee, there were plenty of them around when I took the photo but it's hard to get them to all stand still long enough for a group shot! This plant flowers in late summer and well into the autumn, it has a perfume that is a little like lavender and the bees love it, it is very easy to grow and doesn't mind a bit of neglect, and it just needs a prune in early spring to encourage new growth, there is also a variegated variety.

Some other plants useful for pollinators because they flower into the autumn are sedums, salvias and asters and as the season goes on there are winter flowering shrubs such as lonicera and the sweetly scented sarcococca, commonly known as the winter flowering box. Don't forget that alongside bees there are many other different types of pollinators in the garden and having a shallow pool of water as well as areas of long grass and leaving seedheads on plants will help to support them. Finally, though just as importantly, allowing the garden to be a little untidy over the winter all helps to provide a rich habitat for pollinators and other wildlife till spring comes round again. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Layham Playgroup I can’t believe I am about to say this but, we have had a lovely, relaxed start back to playgroup since the Covid19 outbreak. I think our beautiful, rural location lends itself perfectly to keeping our children, staff, and families safe as we are away from the hustle and bustle life throws at us. We are able to explore the world around us and observe as the seasons change. A recent nature walk allowed us to discover that the leaves had started falling off the trees and had changed colour… I wonder what will happen as we head into winter.

One thing is for sure, we will be keeping cosy and warming up nicely with plenty of homemade soup, toasted muffins, and the occasional hot chocolate!

Speaking of winter…I wonder if we will have a visit from our friendly elf, Buddy, this year? He came to stay with us last year and he shared a new Christmassy themed activity with us each day! The perfect countdown to Christmas!

Parish Council The main matters discussed during the meeting of 30 September 2020 were: • Suffolk CC report In response to a question from Councillor Roberts about the campaign to encourage young people to keep fit, Councillor Jones said initiatives would vary from parish to parish; he would be happy to discuss them further outside the meeting. Councillor Woods commented that both Mary Evans and Andrew Reid had highlighted the importance of people getting and out about more, especially walking and cycling. However, as discussed in the past, it was dangerous to walk into Hadleigh from Upper Layham alongside the B1070; he would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further. With regard to apprenticeships, Councillor Jones said local businesses were aware of the opportunities and the role of councils was to make it easier to navigate the process. Councillor Jones said SCC was currently working on budgets for the coming year. Details of the Comprehensive Spending Review would be announced in November. SCC budget scrutiny would take place in January 2021 and a budget would be finalised by mid-February.

• District Council report Referring to various campaigns aimed at encouraging people to bin their litter or take it home, Councillor Robers suggested the PC might help to promote these initiatives.

• SCC Community Self-Help Scheme The working party had recommended that training volunteers should be a priority, as some of the possible activities would involve working on or alongside roads. Several parishioners had expressed interest in volunteering, but it would be important to discuss possible activities with them first, to ensure they were willing to participate. It was noted that some of the problems the working party had identified were actions SCC should undertake; these had been reported online. It was agreed to make a decision at the next meeting on whether to participate in the scheme.

• Speeding Following the last meeting, the Clerk had contacted SCC to ask if there was any room for manoeuvre on their decision not to process any new requests for SID device posts until the end of the year. SCC said there was a backlog of requests to deal with; however, Layham had been added to the list of new schemes.

• Suffolk 2020 Fund Councillor Jones had circulated a press release announcing the first project to benefit from this initiative: funding for electric vehicle charging points in rural Suffolk. He confirmed that the deadline for applications had been extended until the end of November, • Response to Government White Paper on Planning The Suffolk Preservation Society had expressed concern about the proposed reforms, which included a move away from locally responsive policies in local plans; the planning application stage would effectively be removed in growth and renewal areas. The Government claimed that this system would speed up development, but the SPS had concerns about the implications on local democracy. It was agreed that the PC should respond, given the importance of localism.

• Remembrance Day It was agreed to order a wreath as usual, in the hope that the service would be able to go ahead under Covid-19 regulations.

• Babergh’s tree planting initiative Babergh and Mid Suffolk were working on mapping both districts to identify where wildlife corridors needed to be established or improved to link up sites; they were also seeking to plant more trees and hedgerows to encourage more wildlife. Parish councils had been approached to see if they would like to be involved. It was agreed that the PC should register an interest.

St.Andrew’s – your local Parish Church St Andrew’s Church is open to the public every Wednesday from 10am-3pm (note earlier closing time for the winter months); social distancing and hygiene guidelines must be followed at all times, and masks should be worn in the church.

We continue to thank the churchwardens for all their hard work in making this possible, and for cleaning and maintaining the church building. Photo Peter Cutts November services will continue to follow the same pattern, taking place in St Andrew’s on the first and third Sundays (so the 1st and 15th November) of each month, at 9.15am. There will also be a short service at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday, 8th November (if guidance permits) - time yet to be confirmed. All services are ‘said’ for the time being, with no singing yet permitted.

During this time of closure and because our many social and fundraising events have not taken place, St Andrew’s Church is struggling to meet its financial commitments. If you are one of those who would have normally

Layham Playing Field - A ‘Jewel’ In Our Village We can’t have too many people helping to keep the playing field in good order. At present there is a Management Committee of eleven people – half of whom are still working or have young children and therefore have limited time for doing jobs on the field. In addition we have a number of generous people who help us out on an occasional basis We are looking for more volunteers who would be prepared to take part in work sessions for a few hours over the year – and particularly people who are ‘qualified’ to arrive with tools such as a strimmer or a chainsaw.

There would be no commitment beyond that – although volunteers to join the Management Committee would be welcomed with open arms.

Playing Field 120 Club Thank you all those who have purchased a 120 Club ticket this year. The first draw of the new year has been made and the October prize winners are: £25 Ticket No 2 Wilder; £15 Ticket No 24 Kelly Palaeolithic hand tool found in Layham There are several people in Layham who have permission from landowners to walk fields in search of historical objects. Some use their eyes only and others have metal detectors. One of those enthusiasts has recently picked up a Palaeolithic flint hand axe which will have been ‘knapped’ (chipped) sometime in the period 2.5 million years ago up to 10,000BC. If the idea of field walking interests you remember you need permission from the landowner.

Rare bird rescue You will remember the two days of high winds we had at the end of September. It was probably that wind that buffeted a juvenile Hobby and led to it being found in the road near the Queen’s Head. It was thin and dehydrated and was taken to the Raptor Hospital in the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary at Stonham Barns by Sheila and Trevor Roberts. It was fed fluid containing nutrients through a tube straight into its stomach and was kept by the charity for a time in the hope that it would regain sufficient strength to fly to Southern Africa before winter. Sadly, it only survived for a few days. The Hobby is not a common bird with fewer than 500 pairs breeding largely across the south of England.

Layham photographer’s work on show Following on from her photographic exhibition in St. Andrew's church last year Rosey Nicholls has been asked to contribute five macro images of insects to a photographic exhibition to celebrate 50 years of Suffolk Coast and Heath's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The exhibition is being held at the Art Space Gallery in Woodbridge from 19th - 25th November. There will be fifty images on display, all by local photographers, of which the female Ruddy Darter above is one.

Local community minded companies join forces to help people with hearing loss Ipswich Building Society and East Anglian hearing care experts, The Hearing Care Centre, have joined forces to help local people with hearing loss who have been impacted by the mandatory introduction of facemasks.

Hearing Care Centre founder and senior audiologist Karen Finch said “When it became mandatory in July that facemasks must be worn, we gave away over 350 “Please speak clearly� badges to help with communication issues for those that wear them by alerting shop assistants, or anyone else they need to communicate with, that they have an issue and that clear speech from the other person will greatly help. We were delighted when Ipswich Building Society contacted us to say they wanted to help too by giving away more badges through their branches.� “It has been shown that wearing a mask does decrease the ability for speech to be understood. This applies for people with normal hearing levels too, so for those with a hearing loss it can be a real problem. People with hearing loss often become quite adept at compensating for it by looking closely at people when they speak, but with the introduction of masks it means that these visual cues have also gone.�

Terrence Tildesley (Terry) Thank you to everyone who sent cards and kind words on the loss of my dear husband on July 15th at Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home. The funeral was at Seven Hills Crematorium on August 10th with Paul Powen, Celebrant, taking the service.

Terry was finally laid to rest on his birthday September 22nd at Hadleigh Cemetery.

News from Kersey School Otters (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) This school year has started with a bang! A huge crash, bang landing in the playground when an alien space ship took a wrong turn! Our space topic has been a great way to launch the year. We have welcomed new children into the class and everyone is working hard and enjoying being back together. We have really enjoyed researching and reading books about space and exploring our classroom.

Badgers (Year 3 and 4) What busy Badgers we have been so far this half term! Along with the rest of the school, we launched our Space topic discovering a Rocket Crash Site on our playground. This stimulated lots of animated discussions creating some fantastic independent writing. We did not stay on Earth for long as we blasted-off into space to visit our new favourite book character, Moon Man. Our brief visit ended as we hitched a ride with him as he clung onto the tail of a passing comet.

Taking advantage of the warm weather, we held our annual sports and mindfulness week, all enjoying a wide variety of sports and activities thanks to some wonderful sports providers. Many exciting opportunities, beginning with a challenging climbing wall on the Glebe on a wonderful sunny day and ending with a perfect cool down on Friday, some relaxing and calming yoga.

Recently, our taste buds have also been tantalised with an analysis of a variety of ingredients. The children chose the products they enjoyed the most to create their own personalised Moon Rock Cakes - they were Out of this World!

Owls (Year 5 and 6) Owls have launched into this term with enthusiasm. Writing with flair about a crash site that was discovered on school property and how it might have got there…

SPACE – this term’s whole-school topic - has also linked neatly with our Science as we have orbited the Sun, spun on our axis as the Earth and experimented our way through the phases of the Moon. We come down to earth with a bang into our Geography that has shown Owls taking on the role of ‘presenters’ as they teach each other about their ‘biome’ research before replicating volcanoes in 3D form! Their favourite and ongoing part of their learning has been apparent through their love of our text, Cosmic, by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

Liam Digby’s journey as a ‘pretend dad’ has taken him to China to be the first dad into Space with a group of very different and excitable children. Owls have roleplayed confidently; prepared poems full of figurative language; walked down conscience alley and visualised settings through art with creative prowess. All this learning wrapped around an incredibly action-packed sports week too! What will the next half of term bring…

There’s no doubt about it, Autumn has well and truly arrived, although I’m a little confused. Mum says her clock has gone back (but to where?) then adds “Winter drawers on” with a sort of smirk. She also says look out for hedgehogs nesting in the bonfire before you set light to it and keep all your pets safe indoors as the firework season approaches. Now that I DO understand.

Our indefatigable fundraisers will be at the Bridge Farm Barns Festive Fair on Saturday 14th November in Monks Eleigh, IP7 7AY. Sheila and Elaine have oodles of “classy stuff” and Jeanette will be running her Terrific Tombola. Despite restrictions, Joan has secured a place for SESAW at the Christmas Tree Festival in St. Peter’s Church in Sudbury next month. This annual celebration is a wonderful start to the festive season and a beautiful sight to behold. Perhaps Mum will let one of the SESAW animals visit the Festival, maybe even me, (Kenny the Boss) Chihuahua.

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Our Grand Opening Our newly refurbished school was officially opened on 9 October by staff, pupils, governors and contractors who were joined

by James Cartlidge MP. We also had press coverage of the opening and so we appeared in the East Anglian Daily Times last week as they were keen to see and hear about the changes and how they will benefit the efficiency of our school building. Two of our school council representatives “cut the ribbon” at the opening!

Year 6 Environmental Letters Whilst James Cartlidge was with us, two of our year 6 pupils took the opportunity to hand over their letters to the MP explaining how they felt we all could help our environment. They are currently working on the environment in class.

Harvest Assembly Reverend Elke Cattermole joined the children at Bildeston Primary School for their Harvest assembly today, which was slightly different from their usual Harvest assembly. Due to the COVID pandemic and social distancing rules, pupils had to stay in their classrooms in their bubbles and the assembly was broadcast virtually which included wonderful parent participation!

Hadleigh Community Primary School Year 2 recently spent a wonderful morning at Felixstowe port watching the giant cranes lift the containers off the ships. We also spent time in the Nature Reserve looking for animal habitats and discovering sea cabbages! We did a sit and spot and concentrated on our senses. This trip kick started our talk for writing text and produced some lovely poetry work.

HSA Lottery Due to current circumstances around Covid-19, the HSA have been unable to hold the usual fundraising events which create significant funding for resources for Hadleigh Community Primary School each year. This funding helps all the children in the school whether it is for extra equipment for children with special educational needs, new facilities for nursery, extra books for the library or sports equipment. The HSA lottery is one way which enables us to continue to raise funds for the school which comply to Government social distancing rules.

Therefore for the foreseeable future, we will be relying heavily on the funds created from the HSA Lottery to help us reach our donation target for 2020/2021.

We have expanded this year’s lottery to allow you to invite other family members and friends to take part by providing the option to pay by Bank transfer.

Kersey Mill Open Days 2020 has certainly been a challenging year. On reflection, now that we are well into Autumn with Christmas on the horizon, time seems to have flown by very quickly since the country was plunged into lockdown back in March. Back then we were all hoping that when restrictions could be lifted, life would return to normal as soon as possible. However it soon became apparent this was not to be the case and sadly our plans for Drive It Day in April had to be cancelled, as were the Mill Open Days which had been scheduled throughout the spring and summer months.

Kersey Mill and the gardens re-opened as from 4th July, and most of the businesses on site were also back up and running. During August it was encouraging to see so many visitors to the site taking advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme at The Miller’s Kitchen and we have also seen a number of classic and vintage car enthusiasts and cycling clubs meeting in the grounds here - albeit socially distanced and following the latest guidance. In spite of all the setbacks, we remain optimistic, we’re making plans for the lead up to Christmas, as the Mill is being transformed for the Santa’s Workshop events in December, and we’ll shortly begin to set out our Open Day spring and summer schedule for 2021.

Mill Restoration update Having achieved so much during 2019, it was our intention to complete the final stages of the Mill restoration this year. With some of the furniture yet to be reinstated, we were able to mill our first test batch of stone ground flour back in April.

We reported in May that work to the crown wheels had been completed, however the damsels and the refurbished hopper were still not in place. We were also about to reinstate the grain bins and chutes to feed the stones, which had been delayed due to issues with producing a replica gimbal for the second set of stones, to match the original version for the first set. Now with the preparations for Santa’s Workshops well underway, everything has been put on hold. In order to ensure the safety of everyone, special measures have been put in place to comply with the latest government guidance.

We took the decision to go ahead with our plans and have adapted the event by making the visit a journey through a one way system and including additional attractions along the way. The Santa’s Workshops start from Saturday 5th December and the hour long sessions run each Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 5pm. For the final week, additional Workshops have been added to include Monday 21st, Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd December. Tickets and further information are available on our website www.kerseymill.net, simply follow the link to Eventbrite. All proceeds go towards the Mill restoration fund and we thank everyone who helps with this event and supports it by attending. Should the Santa’s Workshop experience have to be cancelled due to changes in government guidance, all tickets purchased will receive a refund.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group Flu and Flu Vaccine Myths Facts Myths surrounding the flu and the flu vaccine are as infectious as flu itself.

The following facts may help dispel those myths.

MYTH Having flu is just like having a heavy cold.

FACT A bad bout of flu is much worse than a heavy cold. Flu symptoms come on suddenly and sometimes severely. They include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles as well as a cough and a sore throat. You’re likely to spend two or three days in bed.

MYTH Having the flu vaccine gives you flu and is not safe.

FACT No it doesn’t and it is very safe. The injected flu vaccine that is given to adults contains Inactivated flu viruses, so it can’t give you flu. The side effects linked with the vaccine are almost always mild and short lived.

MYTH I had the flu jab last year so I don’t need it again.

FACT Yes you do. The viruses that cause flu can change every year, so you need a vaccination each year that matches the new viruses. The vaccine usually provides protection for the duration of the flu season that year.

MYTH The flu jab doesn’t work.

FACT Flu vaccine is the best protection we have against an unpredictable virus.

Studies have shown that the flu jab will help prevent you getting flu. It won’t stop all flu viruses and the level of protection may vary but if you do get the flu after the vaccination it’s likely to be milder and shorter-lived that it would otherwise have been.

MYTH Flu can be treated with antibiotics.

FACT No, it can't. Viruses cause flu, and antibiotics only work against bacteria. You may be prescribed antiviral medicines to treat your flu. Antivirals do not cure flu, but they can make you less infectious to others and reduce the length of time you may be ill. To be effective, antivirals have to be given within a day or two of your symptoms appearing. A bacterial infection may occur as a result of having the flu, in which case you may be given antibiotics.

MYTH I can’t have the flu jab when I’m pregnant as it will affect my baby.

FACT You should have the flu jab no matter what stage of pregnancy you’re in. If you are pregnant you could get very ill if you get flu which could easily be bad for your baby. Having the jab can also protect your baby against flu after they’re born and during the early months of life.

MYTH Children can’t have the flu vaccine.

FACT Children over the age of six months who are "at risk" of serious illness if they catch the flu are eligible for a flu vaccine on the NHS. All children in primary school and all children in the first year of secondary school will also have a flu vaccine on the NHS. The flu vaccine is generally given to children aged 6 months to 2 years as an injection, and as a nasal spray for children aged 2 to 18 years. Children ‘at risk’ from flu include those with a pre-existing illness such as a respiratory or neurological condition, or children who are having treatment such as chemotherapy.

Not the original date due to Covid 19 but still a very enjoyable day despite the rain.

As is the tradition at Stoke By Nayland, a golf buggy was decorated depicting her hobbies including hockey and her involvement with the Brownies.

Instead of being given the usual bouquet of flowers, Jane was presented with a few tins of Guinness which were very much appreciated.

At the halfway hut, on the 10th Gainsborough Championship course, Jane's husband Paul and her sister Hannah, gave out liquid refreshment and food goody bags, both very welcome by the 42 ladies who were playing in teams of three. Debbie Howlett took photographs of each and every team with the Captain.

The competition was called The 'Gold---ing' Ball and it was in a format called “yellow ball” which is a team format and each team member alternates using the “yellow ball” which counts as double points. But of course if you lose the yellow ball then you lose the double points bonus for the rest of the round.

The 10th Gainsborough lake being the biggest obstacle of course.

The winning team were Fran Chandler, Lesley Garnett and Catriona Chaplin with a score of 107 stableford points. Second, Margaret Bentley, Mal Went and Suzanne Shaw-Smith with 100 points and third with 95 points, Hilary Cairn, Caroline Lowe and Barbara Rowe. Best front 9 Sue Gregory, Sarah Viner and Sue Spittlehouse with 60 points and best back 9 Lesley Hitchcock, Barbara Jones and Jill Line with 42 points.

Gift bags were handed out personally by Jane as each group of ladies finished the 18th, a very kind gesture much appreciated by all the lady members. The Ladies section had a collection for Jane's special day and the monies raised are going towards a new golf bag. A very special day for a very special Ladies Captain.

This month Active Suffolk are celebrating the 1000th Fit Village participant through the door since April 2018 Fit Villages is a well-established and popular project that makes a real difference to local communities by bringing people together to socialise, have fun and become more.

The Fit Villages project offers support to villages in rural locations to set up physical activity sessions by using local facilities such as community centres, village halls, libraries and playing fields. We've helped many villages across Suffolk to set up lots of fun and exciting activities such as Pilates, Yoga, Table Tennis, Nordic Walking, Zumba, Badminton, Keep Fit and Walking Football, as well as many more!

The project has been helping to deliver physical activity sessions to those living in rural parts of the county for over a decade and in April 2018, the team were ecstatic after discovering that the project would continue to receive funding. Since then, 63 individual projects have launched in 59 rural locations across Suffolk and this month the team celebrated a huge milestone after welcoming their 1000th unique participant through the door.

Nick Pringle, Senior Development Officer said: "We are pleased to have reached this milestone as it reflects the positive impact that Fit Villages has had on many communities across Suffolk. Our focus now is showcasing how physical activity initiatives such as Fit Villages play a vital role in supporting people's health and wellbeing, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, and that it should be seen as a genuine antidote to the concerns many of us are feeling right now therefore we encourage all to take part in local activity, especially throughout the Autumn and Winter".
