SUMMER ACADEMICS Want to perfect your skills and try something new? Looking to exercise your brain in new ways? Join us this summer at Hackley, for academic courses for Lower, Middle and Upper School students. These courses are open to Hackley students, as well as students in our local community, from public, independent and private schools in the area. Most of these courses are designed to help students strengthen skills they learned in the past year, and some are to give a preview of what is to come. All courses are taught by Hackley faculty and offer small class sizes and high level instruction. Page 38

SPECIAL INTEREST COURSES Summer Special Interest Courses span a wide range of subjects, areas of interest and adventures. These courses are very popular for their breadth and depth of engagement with the subject or activity. Some provide real-world exposure to things not found in a standard school curriculum while others help prepare for the next stage in a student’s academic and life-long learning journey. A great way to expand horizons, try something new and get outside your comfort zone in a safe, nurturing and supportive summer environment.

Page 42

SUMMER SPORT-SPECIFIC ATHLETICS Hackley Summer Programs offers a great mix of camp opportunities across a variety of sports to help improve your skills, up your sports IQ and strength your mental game. Make the most of your commitment to the sport of your choice in a fun, relaxed setting on our state of the art fields and facilities. Some programs are run by Hackley coaches and some are run by outside professional groups. Registration for some of these camps will be done directly with their respective organizations, and not through the Hackley Summer Programs registration system. Please see where noted. Page 50

ADVENTURES IN INVENTING Create, play and explore! The “Maker Movement” promotes student access to the technology, tools and materials needed for creativity and exploration. Campers will take on the roll of inventor as they tinker with a new set of activities each day. The fun doesn’t stop there, since the materials fee allows students to take home their projects. Worried about duplicate activities? All chosen projects are new for repeat campers and geared towards the age group. Possibilities include, but are not limited to, wearable computing, circuits, and solar power. Cost includes materials fee.

INFINITE MOTION HIP-HOP A fun active course learning the fundamentals of hip-hop and fitness. Infinite Motion teaches students to be confident, active and healthy. Learning styles of dance from 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Michael has been teaching dance for 15 years and has a great positive energy to empower kids to be versatile and create as innovators. Teamwork activities make the class a wonderful environment to help students with communication and leadership skills. Infinite Motion is a place where every student is infinite.

DRAGON LAIRS, TROLL BRIDGES, FAIRY CASTLES Let your imagination soar as you collect natural decorations, curious plants and other items to make homes for dragons, trolls, fairies and more. Inspired by the Tracy Lane books, kids will spend time both inside and out of Hackley making their creations. Last year we made a city, complete with ships and a harbor. Students should come with their imaginations. Most supplies will be found outside and small dragon and fairy figurines will be provided for inspiration.

NATURE CRAFTS Let’s explore the vast greatness of nature on Hackley’s campus! The Hackley forest and all it contains is a great place to learn, explore, and give us artistic inspiration. Interdisciplinary activities will include nature walks and talks, reading books about nature, writing about nature, taking photos of nature, and the use of iPad Apps, Art, Music, and Movement.

SEW HAPPY SUMMER SEWING FUN Kids love Sew Happy Camps! Sewing is a great way for kids to express themselves and to experiment with their creativity. Our expert instructors will teach students about many aspects of sewing including safety, hand sewing and machine sewing and they will love using our computerized sewing machines. Each week we will be working on new projects so a student may sign up for all 3 weeks and complete different projects including a monogrammed tote bag, a personality pillow, stuffed animals, key chains and other fun accessories. Beginners are welcome, we always begin with an introductory project to make sure each student is up to speed before moving on to more advanced projects. This isn’t Grandma’s sewing — this is a fast and fun activity and if a student enjoys it and would like to learn more we offer Sewing Machine Schools during the school year. Cost includes materials fee.

“GOOD MORNING HACKLEY!!” (TV PRODUCTION) The students will work together to produce, direct, write, and star in a TV production that will highlight trending current events. It has been adapted to suit various grade levels, and former Hackley educator, Drew Scecina, is thrilled to be offering this exciting program to Hackley students once again. “Good Morning, Hackley!” will reinforce reading, writing, research, and performance skills. Final production available to take home and share with friends and family.

SUMMER SQUASH CLINIC Designed and lead by Hackley Varsity coach Adrian Grant and his certified coaches. Think of fun games, skill drills, exciting action and you think of squash. This camp will develop young minds the foundation of squash from technique, movement, the rules and sportsmanship. Our goal is for every camper to believe and reach their full potential, while building encouragement, confidence and wellness.

LEGO SUMO ROBOTICS This course will teach students how to design, build and program EV3 Lego Sumo Robots. Robots will compete against each other in a battle zone, with each robot attempting to push, grab or flip their opponent. The challenge is fun, with many opportunities for students to be creative, to learn about logic programming and to learn about structural integrity. By the end of the course, each student will have built their own robot, and there will be a tournament filled with epic battles where kids cheer as Lego clashes with Lego. No matter which Lego wins, what will matter most is the experience and the skills that the students learn.

JUNIOR LEGAL EAGLES Do you ever wonder what it’s like to be a trial lawyer or why we have certain laws? Perhaps you wonder if our legal system is anything like what you see on TV and in the movies? This course will give you the chance to experience different aspects of our justice system, through thought provoking discussion and debate, as well as fun challenges and collaboration. This is your opportunity to consider how the reality of our justice system differs from what the media portrays.

EXPLORATION IN ELECTRONICS Are you curious to find out how electronic gadgets and toys work? This oneweek course is a completely “hands-on” interdisciplinary course that invites students to become tinkerers, while also introducing them to the fields of electrical engineering and computer programming. Utilizing the popular Arduino electronics logic board, students will have fun making a variety of electronics projects ranging from space-ship control panels, to keyboards and musical instruments to motorized pinwheels. Cost includes materials fee. 9

HACKLEY CLIMBING COURSE Students will explore the many rock outcrops on the Hackley campus. In addition, we will take a trip to a nearby indoor climbing gym. In the process, students will learn basic climbing techniques and safety procedures. They will also become familiar with essential rock climbing equipment. Students will split time between bouldering and top-rope climbing. All equipment is included, but we recommend students bring their own rock climbing shoes for comfort and ease.

SCULPTURAL CERAMICS Come experience the magic of clay and let your imagination free! Campers will collaborate on a large-scale clay project as well as creating their own sculptures and vessels. We will learn to use a variety of techniques such as slab building, coil construction and throwing on the pottery wheel to create forms for our pieces. All work will be fired at the end of the week and campers can pick up their work during the summer.

ROCK & ROLL WORKOUT Flex your musical muscles and join your fellow players for a one week workshop with Mr.Mancini this summer. We will spend the week choosing, and working out arrangements of classic and contemporary Rock and Roll, Blues and Alternative rock tunes. Class members will pick the material. Students are encouraged to communicate their arranging ideas with the class. We end the week with a concert on the Hackley Campus. All rhythm instruments and vocalists welcome.

NATURE ADVENTURES! Do you like being outside? Do you like exploring the trails and finding geocaches? Do you like be surprised every day? If so, this is the camp session for you. Everyday we will go to a new place to see what we can find. In the past trips have included: Stone Barns, Rockefeller, Prynn Sanctuary in Millwood, Cranberry Lake, Muscoot farm and of course Teatown. We will see animals, swim in a stream, play nature bingo and spend the day outside in nature. The last day will be a trip to Croton Dam and Ice Cream at the Blue Pig (one of the top most eco friendly ice cream places in the county).

EXPLORING THE WORLD ON A MAGIC CARPET Each day the children will climb aboard an actual “magic” carpet and we will fly off to visit and explore a different country each day. The magic carpet ride will be a magical experience for the children, complete with twinkling fairy lights and music playing that is appropriate for the country they will be “landing at” that day. Upon landing the children will learn key information about their destination via Smart Board presentations, age appropriate books, posters and games, and I will create some kind of passport for them to have “officially” stamped. Each session will include learning about the geography and culture of each country, including the music, way of life, dress, food, and forms of recreation. In addition to immersing ourselves in factual information about the country, our activities will also include creating a craft from each country and learning a traditional song, dance or game. The aim of this program is to enrich the students knowledge about the world around them, as well as providing them with the opportunity to be creative and have a lot of fun. At the end of the week the students will take home a book showcasing what they have learned about all of the countries they have “visited” on our magic carpet.

KINDNESS ROCKS! Are you kind? Have you ever performed a random act of kindness? Have you ever been the recipient of a random act of kindness? Have you heard about the Kindness Rocks Project or ever found a kindness rock? We will explore the growing trend of Kindness Rocks and Art Rocks and have fun while designing our own tokens of gratitude and happiness. Walks on the Hackley trails, mindful moments, and music will serve as our inspiration!

CODEREV: ROBLOX STUDIO GAME DESIGN

$725

Roblox is one of the hottest places on the universe to make games, with cutting edge graphics and new, amazing, game building tools. In our Roblox Game Design course, kids use Roblox’s built-in editor to create 3D worlds and then use the popular LUA coding language to code game actions, elements and mechanics. Younger campers use built in AI to code their games without the need for text-based code. CodeREV Roblox campers also learn how to publish and share their game to the Roblox community world-wide! Cost includes materials fee.

PASSIONATE PISCATORIAL PURSUITS (AKA FISHING CAMP)

GRADES 5-10

This course will offer students the chance to expand their fresh water fishing knowledge by introducing them to a variety of fishing methods. They will learn how to cast a spin rod, fly rod and bait caster. We will show them how to select some basic lures and how to identify “fishy water.” The class will get firsthand knowledge of local rivers, ponds and lakes as well as the opportunity to fish every day. On the final day, the course will culminate with a trip to the Housatonic River for trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and northern pike. Cost includes materials/supplies fee.

GRADES 2–5

INSTRUCTOR S. Sternberg GRADES 7–12 $725

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: INTRODUCTION Invented in 1974, the game Dungeons and Dragons is unlike any other game most play. Where many games are about following the rules, D&D is about breaking them! Where other games show you an imaginary world, D&D asks you to actually imagine living there! Earlier versions of the game suffered from too much complexity, but the latest edition, released in 2014, has earned widespread acclaim for being more approachable and inclusive of diverse audiences. In this class, we will learn the basics of D&D by playing one shared campaign that will place over a few days. After that, each participant will design and then run a “one-shot,” which is a short story that can be completed in just one session. Cost includes materials fee.

JOURNEYING AND JOURNALING: WRITERS GRAND TOUR Journaling has been shown to be a great way to process emotions, record unique observations, and keep your creativity peaked. Journeying is a great way to refresh your perspective and provide you with interesting adventures. In this class, we will aim to combine the two. By taking a journey each day via Metro North and NYC Transit, we will explore NYC literary landmarks, read excerpts from writers inspired by these locales, and experiment in journaling using various prompts from and for our adventures. Possible stops include Edgar Allen Poe’s cottage in the Bronx, the Coney Island boardwalk, Langston Hughes’ home in Harlem, and the Staten Island Ferry. Students will free write, develop short pieces, participate in peer review, and develop tools for honing and jumpstarting their writing creativity while journeying. Cost includes transportation fee.

SKETCHBOOK EXPLORER: THE NEW YORK CITY EXPERIENCE

GRADES 7-11

After the success of the first travel sketchbook class in summer 2017, the students continue to request a more in-depth study of New York City. As these young artists and scholars are growing up, they are becoming more curious and craving more independence. This sketchbook travel class is a way for students to learn how to utilize the vast resources of New York City. Although it is so close, it often feels inaccessible to our students living just outside of its borders. We will travel by the Metro-North Railroad and the NYC Subway from Tarrytown into a different parts of NYC each day. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: LEADERSHIP & ADVOCACY IN DIGITAL AGE

INSTRUCTOR S. Fitzpatrick

Nearly every Constitution around the world was created as a direct result of lengthy civil disagreement. America’s own founding fathers argued over an overwhelming number of issues at the Philadelphia Convention. President George Washington’s letter to the President of Congress of 17 September 1787 emphasized that their work was “the result of a spirit of amity, and of that mutual deference and concession which the peculiarity of our political situation rendered indispensable.” Today, living in a world widely polarized, we may very well wonder: what happened to that spirit of mutual deference?

GRADES 6–9 TIME Full-Day $800

The most successful mediators and peacekeepers understand the value of autonomy and the importance of civil disagreement and civil discourse. While we may not always agree on policy, everyone treasures their independence and desires to have their views acknowledged as legitimate. History shows us the very real consequences to be borne when we dismiss, demean, silence or otherwise trample upon the autonomy of another human being. If we wish to avoid repeating these mistakes we must all work together to revive civic discourse and learning to disagree in a civil manner is the first step. This course will give you the tools you need to utilize civil disagreement to open the hearts and minds of others and move toward positive, sustainable change. You will build on public speaking skills, negotiation, debates, and other forms of conflict resolution to better understand best practices for resolving disagreements and reaching compromise. Through analysis, reflection and multi-party simulations, you will learn the best ways to revive civil disagreement and civil discourse in your communities.

PRE-ALGEBRA REVIEW This course provides rising sixth and seventh grade students with the opportunity to improve their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as various other general math topics. Students will also have an opportunity to learn mathematics not frequently taught in a typical fifth or sixth grade mathematics course, potentially including but not limited to number theory, knot theory, logic, combinatorics, and fractals. This course allows students who are new to Hackley or need a refresher to become familiar with “Singapore math” strategies. It also provides an alternative to tutoring for students who need support, and offers consistent practice to students whose skills have weakened during the summer months.

FUNDAMENTALS IN EFFECTIVE WRITING AND DISCUSSION In this three-week summer course, we provide students with the foundational reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in the Upper School English classroom. The course will meet for two weeks at the start of the summer and reconvene prior to the start of school for a final “tune-up” week. The course will focus primarily on close reading skills and the structural elements of an analytical essay with particular emphasis on the nature of an argumentative claim and effective use of textual evidence. Given that the English classes at Hackley are predominately discussion-based, we will also spend time on how to contribute effectively to a conversation and how to generate thoughtful discussion.

QUADRATIC TOPICS In this course, students build on their study of linear topics and begin to explore quadratic equations. We begin with a study of systems of linear equations before we tackle exponents, exponential functions, and quadratic equations. We conclude our study with polynomials and factoring, rational equations and functions, and radicals and their relationship to geometry. Covering the second half of algebra over the summer is a challenging task, and thus we only recommend this to students who are willing to invest both time and effort in this course and its accompanying homework. We also suggest that only those who have demonstrated mastery of the material in the Linear Topics course by earning a Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 grade of A- or better and their teacher’s recommendation consider registering for the course.

SUMMER GEOMETRY In this Euclidean geometry course, the main emphasis is on plane geometry. The traditional topics are covered: parallel lines and planes, congruency, quadrilaterals, similarity, right triangle relationships, circles, polygons, and constructions. Direct and indirect proofs are taught as methods of reasoning. Non-Euclidean topics such as solid geometry, coordinate geometry, and transformational geometry are introduced. Hackley Student Prerequisite: Math 301 or 380 or an Algebra I course which covers linear and quadratic functions

READING AND WRITING FOR HISTORY: FROM THE MEDIEVAL TO THE MODERN WORLD

INSTRUCTOR A. Maisonet

This two week, full day course is designed to introduce foundational history skills to newcomers to Hackley’s ninth grade as well as to returning students who want to reinforce these skills. Students will practice the close reading of medieval and renaissance primary and secondary sources to practice and to enhance critical thinking skills. These include highlighting, annotating, and note taking as well as free writing responses to short prompts. The course content will explore the mindset of the medieval world and how it transitioned into the modern era. This study includes crucial developments in religion, economics, and politics and their successive expressions in architecture, art, and literature. Units include the study of Feudalism, Monastic Life, the Papacy, the Medici in Florence, the Protestant Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution.

PRECALCULUS REVIEW FOR AP CALCULUS AB This week-long course is designed to help students consolidate their understanding of the topics covered in Algebra II & Trigonometry and Precalculus that are frequently used in AP Calculus. One area that students find difficult in the AP Calculus course, is the need for immediate recall of these topics and this can sometimes put a student in a position where demonstrating their solid understanding of calculus is hindered. This course will cover these topics using a variety of techniques (e.g. activities, iPads) and will enable students to start AP Calculus AB with confidence.

DATE Aug 12–16 INSTRUCTOR K. Richardson GRADE 11–12 TIME Afternoons

INTRODUCTION TO AP CALCULUS AB In this week-long course students will be introduced to the fundamentals of calculus by covering limits, continuity, derivatives, and differentiation rules. As some students find these concepts quite different from pre-calculus, the start of calculus can be challenging due to the unfamiliarity rather than difficulty. By having exposure to these topics in the summer, students find the transition from pre-calculus to calculus less stressful and are provided with a greater command of the mathematics. This will give them a leg up during an important year.

PERSONAL NARRATIVE AND THE COLLEGE ESSAY Personal Narrative & the College Essay will ask students to write in a personal mode that will in & of itself prove rewarding — but that mode of writing should ease their work in producing that most distinctive of literary productions: the college essay. By reading an array of sample college essays from years past, studying closely canonical & contemporary essays by writers with recognizably unique voices, & participating in a workshop peer review setting, students will leave the course not only with a deep understanding of the personal essay as an art form, but also they will produce a number of viable personal essays that they might then use in their various applications. Potential readings include, but are not limited to, works by Joan Didion, Frank Bruni, Mark Twain, Flannery O’Connor, Rebecca Solnit, John Jeremiah Sullivan, & others.

SCREENWRITING FOR MOVIES AND TV If this is the “golden age of television” with more outlets for original content than ever before, then why not get into the game yourself? If movies can be shot on an iPhone, and are distributed in theaters and through streaming platforms simultaneously, why not develop your own feature-length script? The problem is, how do you write a script that sells? How do you prepare pitches that pop? This course will help you develop your ideas into a script that is market-ready. In class, we will break down movies and television episodes to see the features of a strong script. Class lessons are designed to teach such aspects of screenwriting as character, story structure & plot, conflict, theme, tone, genre, setting, drafting & revising, and giving & receiving feedback. Class session will allow us to study examples of these traits of writing, and offer opportunities for practice writing exercises, developing ideas, and planning for a full-length work. If you’re curious about writing for either the big or small screen, there is no better way to improve than putting your script to the test of seeing how an audience reacts to it.

LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE This course is an interdisciplinary exploration of the questions that shape how we live our lives. How can we find fulfillment and become excellent in a competitive world and remain true to our sense of what is right? What are some fragments of our authentic self that we can find reflected in texts external to, but also somehow familiar to, ourselves? How can we develop the discernment to select things to consume that will affirm our identities rather than define them? A variety of experiences and texts support this deep dive into the study of human nature. Informal writing — focused free writes, journaling, and interviews — will engage with texts, images, videos, and personal experience.

Units of study will promote exploration in human identity and in the challenges that we face when discerning what constitutes a life worth living.
