LET’S READ WITH RHYTHM—LITERACY CAMP Let's read, write, dance, and sing to the rhythm you hear in books. Many of the skills involved in literacy can also be found in music, and music education helps students' literacy development. Literacy is larger than just reading and writing—it also includes listening, speaking, and social skills that are relevant to communication. Let's bring literacy to life and boogie our way through summer!

DRAGON LAIRS, TROLL BRIDGES, FAIRY CASTLES AND MORE! Let your imagination soar as you collect natural decorations, curious plants, and other items to make homes for dragons, trolls, fairies and more. Inspired by the Tracy Lane books, kids will spend time both inside and out of Hackley classrooms making their creations. Last year we made a city, complete with ships and a harbor. Students should come with their imaginations. Most supplies will be found outside and small dragon and fairy figurines will be provided for inspiration.

THE GREAT HACKLEY SPORTS CAMP A week-long camp for boys and girls (grades K-8) combining fun, friendship, and a skills-based introduction to different sports, including soccer, baseball, basketball, ultimate games, and swimming. From the time they arrive in the morning until they leave each afternoon, campers will be engaged in activities led by a team of fun and outgoing counselors. A typical day will be packed with creative sport-specific games and team-building activities. Campers will learn about proper nutrition and the importance of living an active lifestyle.

In this one-week class, students will use persuasive writing to discover the power their words have to influence people. They will craft their own written arguments to defend or facilitate change about something that is important to them, based on a selfselected topic, through research and personal beliefs. The challenge is fun, with many opportunities for students to be creative, to learn about logic programming and to learn about structure and strength. By the end of the course, each student will have built their own robot, and there will be a tournament filled with epic battles where kids cheer as Lego clashes with Lego. No matter which Lego wins, what will matter most is the experience and the skills that the students learn.

Each day, they will explore some of their own unique ideas and learn how to express those ideas using these varied materials. With ceramics, they will utilize basic hand-building techniques with clay and then fire and glaze their projects. In printmaking, they will create an edition based on one of their own drawings, using a reductive block-printing technique. With plaster and paint, they will make casts of their hands, feet, and face, and attach these casts to a canvas to create a three-dimensional painting. Students who took this class last year, will be able to push their understanding of the materials to new levels, while new students, will gain the basic skills and techniques necessary to craft their projects. We will splatter glazes like Jackson Pollock and paint stripes with tape inspired by the vases of Ettore Sotsass. Campers will look at the ceramic murals of Miro and create their own abstract glazed “paintings” on clay. We will use slabs, coils, press molds and the pottery wheels to create forms for decorating. All artwork will be fired and available to take home by June 30th.

MUSICAL MAD LIBS By using “Veronica” as a template—which, in turn, used “Peter and the Wolf” as its template—workshop participants will create original pieces that combine musical and theatrical elements. By using improvisational tools to generate musical themes, we will develop and perform original compositions. As a group, we will use individual talents and skills to play instruments or vocalize parts written by workshop participants. Understanding traditional notation is not required and various indeterminate notational techniques will be created by workshop participants that will allow for significant contributions by participants lacking formal musical training. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okJv91jS6sQ Materials/Supplies fee: $25

STRATEGY GAMES MEETS HISTORY: WORLD WAR 1 This is a course designed to promote historical understanding and traditional learning using miniature games as a major vehicle. Each morning, students will have the opportunity to study this period at length, covering everything from the reasons for the conflict, the tactics used during battles, as well as the social, economic, and political ramifications resulting from the wars themselves. During these sessions, an emphasis will be placed on discussion, the art of asking a good question, research, and public speaking. In the afternoons, students will take what they learned from class and employ those lessons directly into both board and miniature games. While board games are cut and dry, miniature games need a degree of explanation. They are three-dimensional affairs, played using painted figures, using dice and rulers to determine the outcomes. The overarching goal of the course is for a student to leave understanding a crucial era in history, using a fun, exciting medium to teach the material. In particular, students will understand the major differences between the ways the war was fought in 1914, compared with the trench warfare of the later period.

CREATIVE WRITING: LYRICAL SHORT STORIES Rhyming, imagination, and storytelling—during week two of creative writing we will focus on a more lyrical, or poetic, form of storytelling. Writing and illustrating go hand-in-hand this week as our imagination and artwork influence our stories. Through this poetic form of writing, we will write short stories that beautifully flow from page to page, working with our illustrations to create a fully immersive experience for our reader. The week will begin with an investigation of a mentor text, a text that will inspire us as we write our own stories. We will then get straight to work, deciding on our topics and laying out our story. As we write, we will often share our progress and provide constructive feedback for each other, allowing us to become stronger community writers. Once we have finished writing, we will then create illustrations for our stories, the last step before they are ready to be published! At the end of the week, each camper will have their own illustrated book of short stories to take home and share. Get ready for the writing event of the summer—how will your story end?

STRATEGY GAMES Strategy Games is a summer program in which students will be learning about history through the context of different mediums including board and miniature games. Students will command armies in miniature, each figure standing between 15mm and 25mm and fully painted. Games are played on three dimensional terrain boards complete with trees, rivers, buildings, and anything else found on a natural landscape. Dice are used to resolve combat, rulers are used to measure move distances, and a variety of gaming rulebooks are used to conduct the engagements. In years past, we’ve played everything from the American Revolution, World War One, and the American Civil War. This particular section will also focus on gaming fundamentals, as for many students, this may be their first introduction into this world.

WRITING IN RESPONSE TO OUR WORLD— EXPRESS YOURSELF! “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” wrote Mahatma Gandhi. In this one-week class, students will read children’s literature that will help jumpstart their thinking in growing more insight about the world and provide an opportunity to express their opinions. They will ask questions like, “What do I feel strongly about? What do I want to say to the world?” Children will have the opportunity to explore how themes in literature can inspire writers, and in turn craft their own written expression.

NATURE CRAFTS Let's explore the vast expanse of nature on Hackley's campus! Interdisciplinary themes will include nature walks and talks, reading books about nature, writing about nature, taking photos of nature, use of iPads, Apps, Art, Music and Movement. The Hackley forest and all it contains is a great place to learn and explore! The great outdoors will serve as our inspiration for our nature crafts! CREATIVE WRITING: HELP! I AM TRAPPED IN A SNOW GLOBE…. Explore what your life would be like if you were stuck in a snow globe. How did you get there? How will you get out? During week one of creative writing camp, we will discover these answers and more. We will start our week by brainstorming ideas on how we became stuck in this odd predicament, using writing organizers and buddy sharing. This will help us to create a supportive writing community and build our confidence as writers. From there, we will start the writing process. Not only will we create a first draft, but we will utilize strategies to edit and revise our stories, checking for grammar (of course!) and swapping out overly utilized words and phrases to elevate our writing pieces. After our writing is complete, we will produce a top-secret art project to be displayed alongside our stories as they are presented. Not only will we get our creative juices flowing this week, we will practice and build our writings skills and have fun doing it! Get ready for the writing event of the summer—how will your story end? 37

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF HARRY POTTER We will spend the week exploring the magical world of Harry Potter. Each child will be issued with a Hogwarts' robe, a magic wand, and of course a flying broomstick, as part of their essential school supplies. Each day will focus on a different element that appears in either the first or the second book, in the Harry Potter series, (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, or Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.) The activities we will engage in each day will be many and varied, ranging from spell practice and creating our own spell books, magic potion making, involving an assortment of mystical ingredients and cauldrons, regular broomstick rides around campus, a daily Quidditch match, dragon sculpting from paper mache or clay, house emblem design, puppet making, and our version of the Tri-Wizard-Tournament. On the first day each Hogwarts student will be sorted into their House by the Sorting Hat, and they will collect house points all week. At the end of the week three cups will be presented: The House Cup, the Quidditch Cup, and The Tri-Wizard Tournament-Cup. If you decide to spend a week at Hogwarts this summer, then look out for your invitation to arrive by Owl Post! Materials/Supplies fee: $25

SKETCHBOOK CLASS: 5 BOROUGHS IN 5 DAY After the success of the first travel sketchbook class last summer at Hackley, the students requested a more in-depth study of New York City. As these young artists and scholars are growing up, they are becoming more curious and craving more independence. This sketchbook travel class (an idea brainstormed by last year’s Sketchbook Adventure students) is a way for students to learn how to utilize the vast resources of New York City. Although it is so close, it often feels inaccessible to our students living just outside of its borders. We will travel by the Metro-North Railroad and the NYC Subway from Tarrytown into a different borough of NYC each day. Students will carry a sketchbook and be instructed with techniques and practices conducive to becoming more observant artists. In the Bronx we will visit the zoo and perhaps the Bronx Museum of the Arts. We will take the iconic Staten Island Ferry and have a beach day on one of Staten Island’s beautiful natural beaches. In Manhattan we will visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and spend time in Central Park. In Brooklyn, we will visit the up and coming hub of art galleries, studios and shops in Bushwick. And in Queens, we will visit The Museum of Modern Art’s P.S.1 Exhibition Space, The Museum of the Moving Image or The Noguchi Museum and explore the surrounding neighborhood. Students will sketch, write and collect throughout their journey in their sketchbooks, crafting a record of their experience. Materials/Supplies fee: $25

UPPER SCHOOL ACADEMICS DATE June 11-22 and Aug 13-17 INSTRUCTOR Brigitd Moriarty GRADE 8-10 TIME Mornings

The Hackley Upper School English Department seeks to instill in students skills that facilitate critical thinking, analytical ability, and intellectual independence. As engaged readers and writers in the Upper School, students find their own voices for various audiences, develop their use of diction and syntax, and refine their logical thought and expression. They design both basic and complex theses and organize their arguments accordingly. They develop a mastery of ondemand and process-oriented writing so they can dispatch simple writing tasks and tackle complex ones. Our program equips students to express themselves with clarity, grace, and power.

$1200

While we pride ourselves on developing critical thinkers and competent, confident writers, we also understand that Upper School writing expectations can prove daunting and challenging for students new to the Upper School. In this three-week summer course, we provide students with the foundational reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in the Upper School English classroom. The course will meet for two weeks at the start of the summer and reconvene prior to the start of school for a final “tune-up” week. In the interim, students will work independently on take-home tasks and will have the opportunity to check in with their teacher throughout the summer. The course will focus primarily on close reading skills and the structural elements of an analytical essay with particular emphasis on the nature of an argumentative claim, the three part thesis statement, topic sentences, and effective use of textual evidence.

FUNDAMENTALS IN EFFECTIVE WRITING

In this course, students build on their study of linear topics and begin to explore quadratic equations. We begin with a study of systems of linear equations before we tackle exponents, exponential functions, and quadratic equations. We conclude our study with polynomials and factoring, rational equations and functions, and radicals and their relationship to geometry. Covering the second half of algebra over the summer is a challenging task, and thus we only recommend this to students who are willing to invest both time and effort in this course and its accompanying homework. We also suggest that only those who have demonstrated mastery of the material in the Linear Topics course by earning a Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 grade of A- or better and their teacher’s recommendation consider registering for the course.

DATE June 11-15 Aug 20-24 INSTRUCTOR Lobko GRADES 10-12 TIME Morning $800

PERSONAL NARRATIVE AND THE COLLEGE ESSAY (TWO SEPARATE WEEKS) In her 1976 essay “Why I Write,” Joan Didion offers an answer that, while simple at first, spirals into ever greater complexity: “I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear. Why did the oil refineries around Carquinez Straits seem sinister to me in the summer of 1956? Why have the night lights in the bevatron burned in my mind for twenty years? What is going on in these pictures in my mind?” Didion’s direct question—why do I write?—gives way to a poignant disquisition on those memories & sensations that linger with us over years, & give our personalities, or even our souls, their distinct warp & weft. Personal Narrative & the College Essay will ask students to write in a personal mode that will in & of itself prove rewarding—but that mode of writing should ease their work in producing that most distinctive of literary productions: the college essay. By reading an array of sample college essays from years past, studying closely canonical & contemporary essays by writers with recognizably unique voices, & participating in a workshop peer review setting, students will leave the course not only with a deep understanding of the personal essay as an art form, but also they will produce a number of viable personal essays that they might then use in their various applications. Potential readings include, but are not limited to, works by Joan Didion, Frank Bruni, Mark Twain, Flannery O’Connor, Rebecca Solnit, David Foster Wallace, John Jeremiah Sullivan, & others.

CREATIVE WRITING FOR THE PAGE, STAGE AND SCREEN

INSTRUCTOR Sean Francis

This course is designed to explore the ways great writing is generated by consideration of the audience. How do you tap into the anxieties of your readers or viewers? What are you going to do once you’ve done so? How will your writing alter the thoughts and perceptions of your audience? How will your writing make your audience feel, and what will you do with that feeling once you’ve aroused it in them?

GRADES 9-12 Parents Alumni TIME Morning $800/$1200

This course offers the unique opportunity of gathering a diverse audience because it is open to students, alumni, and parents. If you are a student, you might be concerned with what your peers will think of your writing, but you also might ask yourself how a twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty-something Hackley alumni might react to your writing. If you are a parent, you might ask yourself what a younger audience that is conversant with the works of Faulkner, Diaz, Morrison, Conrad, Plath, Salinger, etc. thinks of your writing. If you’re curious about how to improve as a writer, there is no better way than putting your writing to the test of seeing how a broad audience reacts to it. In the first two weeks of the course in June, we will focus on the following aspects of writing: character, story structure & plot, conflict, theme, narration, tone, setting, drafting & revising, and giving & receiving feedback. We will study examples of the traits of writing in short stories, plays, movies, and television. The course will offer opportunities for practice writing exercises, developing ideas, and planning for a longer work. If you opt for the third week of the course in August, we will share more developed work, and continue to improve revising skills.

INTRODUCTION TO FILM CRITICISM Moviegoing can be great fun, especially with guidance from review sources like Rotten Tomatoes. Yet we can also engage film more deeply, as an art form. There are several ways to write about film, from short popular movie reviews to longer pieces that utilize academic modes of critique. In conjunction with examples of reviews, students will view scenes from The Conversation, Blade Runner, Happy-Go-Lucky, and other films to explore the vocabulary of film criticism and analysis. We will conclude with an in-depth examination of A Serious Man, discussing what several writers have to say about the religious and philosophical questions the film posits, some of which are controversial. Students will have the option to submit a film review for commentary at the end of the course.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE—HISTORY, POLICY AND THE FUTURE

INSTRUCTOR Jackson Blossom

In the last 35 years, the concept of environmental justice has evolved from an academic critique of environmentalism and a civil rights movement to a government agency framework for domestic public policy consideration and grants, and international development studies. This humanities seminar will review various literature on these subjects, with an eye on garbage and recycling, toxic waste, e-waste, water, industry, pollution, energy, jobs and consumption in America and trans-nationally. Site excursions and a weekend service learning day extension may be integrated in the course.

ADIRONDACK RIVER “ROAD TRIP” (SLEEP-AWAY FISHING ADVENTURE)

INSTRUCTOR Ogden

Come spend 5-days fishing and camping in the Adirondack Mountains! This course is designed for intrepid fishers who enjoy exploring new waters in pursuit of big, wild fish. We'll be fishing some famed northeastern trout waters, so there will be an emphasis on fly-fishing, including a learn-to-fly-fish clinic sponsored by the Ausable River Two-Fly Shop. Of course, spin fishers are also welcome. Equipment rentals are available through the shop, so no gear or experience is required. Campers will get the opportunity to fish the Ausable river, the Bouquet river, the Saranac river, and assorted ponds and small streams. The New York State operated Wilmington Notch Campground will be our home base while we’re up in the mountains. Campers will be staying in tents, but the campground is equipped with showers and bathrooms. So if you're a fisher who enjoys getting away from the crowds and adventuring in remote, wild places, this camp is for you!

CLIMB MOUNT MARCY—ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE Climb Mt. Marcy!! Standing at 5,343 feet tall, Mt. Marcy is the tallest mountain in New York State and one of the tallest mountains on the east coast. Although this is a famous mountain, getting to the summit is no easy feat. During the summer months the trail conditions are usually favorable so the main challenge is the fitness and determination that is required to get to the top. From our campsite, the summit day round trip hiking mileage is roughly 9 miles round trip and about 3,000 feet elevation gain. Since this gain is over several miles, there are no real steep sections and the hiking conditions are usually very good. Ropes and harnesses (and other technical gear) are not needed, just hard work, determination, and favorable weather/trail conditions. Aside from attempting to “climb” Mt. Marcy, other objectives of this trip are to teach students camping and hiking skills, as well as Leave No Trace Principles. During our three nights camping, it is imperative that we leave as little impact as possible while in the great outdoors. The cost of this trip includes round trip transportation to Lake Placid and the Adirondack region from Hackley school. Also included is the overnight camping fee, parking fee, Herb Brooks Arena tour fee, two chaperones (each with years of experience in the outdoors including the Adirondacks), and gear such as tents, sleeping bags/pads, backpacks, cooking stoves, maps/compass, and bear canisters. Not included is other appropriate hiking gear such as: hiking boots, rain pants/jacket, warm layers, and food during the trip. If any student is missing some of the gear it is certainly possible to borrow from the Hackley community. Group size is limited to just seven students so sign up soon! Day 1: day spent at Hackley for a trip overview, gear check, gear run to REI (if needed) Day 2: depart Hackley at 7AM, bus to Lake Placid, tour of Herb Brooks Ice Arena—home of the 1980 Olympics and USA victory over USSR (greatest sports win in American history!!). After a few hours spent exploring Lake Placid the group will then travel to the mountains and camp near Adirondack Loj at the base of the mountain. Day 3: The group will wake up, break down camp and begin the easy two mile hike to beautiful Marcy Dam and set up a new campsite for the next two nights. Once the campsite is set we will spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the beautiful scenery, going over Leave No Trace Principles, and tomorrow’s summit attempt. If the group is feeling energetic we may even be able to hike a smaller mountain for practice. Day 4: The team will wake up early, eat a hearty breakfast and get packed and pumped for the summit attempt. This is an all day hike (approximately 4-5 hours up and 3-4 hours down). We believe that slow and steady wins the race and the group will take lots of rests to stay hydrated and well fed along the way. We will return to the campsite in the mid-afternoon to rest and enjoy a victory team dinner together. Day 5: Break down camp, hike 2 miles back to bus, drive home, and arrive at Hackley between 3-5PM 59

YANKEES BASEBALL CAMP At Yankees Baseball Camps, we're dedicated to the idea of bringing out the personal best in high potential kids and teens. We understand that all children, given the right support structures, have high potential. Inherent to this purpose is a recognition of the unique gifts and skills in each of our campers and athletes, as well as an awareness that to best coach them we have to engage with them, understand them, and meet them where they are on their developmental journey. The Super Six are a foundation of solid leadership building blocks we use to train our coaches, design our curriculum and engage with campers. These life skills are based in well-established, developmental research and social science. Each of our Yankees Baseball Camp activities and experiences are built upon The Super Six, enabling kids to reinforce life-enhancing skills while having fun, making memories and building the fundamentals of their baseball skills.
