Habs Weekly Pre-Prep and Prep School End of Half Term Edition Friday 13 October Autumn Term

Head of Prep School’s Message It was wonderful to see so many of you on Tuesday as we came together as a community, to celebrate the Harvest Festival. It truly was magical to see the Year 2 Joint Choir perform together for the very first time. A performance which exemplified the Schools’ drive towards collaboration and the coming together of students from the Boys and Girls School, to learn, grow and most importantly, build friendships and have fun together. Earlier this term, staff and student leaders from the two schools attended a Student Leadership event at Haberdashers’ Hall, along with student leaders from a diverse range of other Habs Schools around the country; developing their leadership skills and building valuable relationships. Last week, all students from Years 5 and 6 across both schools enjoyed the opportunity to continue building new friendships, forged during collaboration events last year, through a variety of team-building activities – including both a fantastic African drumming workshop and a Lego session. We look forward to many similar events throughout the year.

Community is so important at the Prep School, and it comes in a multitude of shapes and forms. As mentioned above, we are part of the community of schools that come together under the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, a diverse group of schools including state primary schools in deprived areas of South London, a grammar school that offers boarding as well as independent schools like ourselves; it is the diversity of this group which enables so much learning from each other. On a different level we are part of the Habs Elstree Schools community, Habs Boys – Prep and Senior and Habs Girls – Junior and Senior. As you know we are already well into our journey by optimising our relationship with our wonderful ‘sibling’ school just over the wall (literally!).

However, within the Prep School there are also many other communities, for example our class and house communities. One of my favourite moments of the year so far was watching the House Tug-of -War in September. It would be easy to focus on those competing, but for me, it was those that were cheering on their House, providing support and encouragement when things didn’t go to plan, who really stood out. The atmosphere was electric, and the sense of community and collegiality was palpable. Yet, community extends beyond Haberdashers; we are all part of a wider community – and through the Year 6 visit to a Hindu Temple in Neasden, and the whole school donations to the Borehamwood Foodbank we recognise the value in knowing and understanding the wider community – however different it is from our own – and acknowledge the role that we can play in helping those less fortunate than ourselves. We all have the ability to make a profound impact; a single act of kindness or giving can change a life.

At Habs, Community is about giving without expecting to get back in return; caring, supporting and looking out for one another; showing courage to be the voice for those that do not have their own.

The Prep School is a fantastic community and one that I am very proud to be a part of.

Wishing you a wonderful half term break. Boys – get outside, read a book, create games, spend time talking, laughing, running and singing.

We have created Amazon wish lists for each year group and would like to invite you to purchase one birthday book from these lists for your sons’ when it is their birthday. The book should be brought into school and handed in to the librarian, Mrs Zinkin, who will insert a personalised bookplate into the book, and present the book to your son in assembly. Then the book will go into his class library for at least a term, before being reshelved in the Prep Library. Two routes will be operating during the trial. LH01 will run from and to Swiss Cottage, and LH02 will run from and to HGS & Highgate. Further details can be found in the letter from the Transport Manager sent on Wednesday 11 October.

The booking request form is now accepting requests and can be accessed by clicking here. Tickets will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis so early booking is strongly advised. Year 1 In-Class Concert 30 OCTOBER 1NP, 3 NOVEMBER 1SS Miss Gozzard would like children in Year 1 to prepare a short piece or part of a piece (no longer than a minute and a half) to sing or play during their first music lesson back after half term (30 October 1NP, 3 November 1SS). Backing tracks and microphones are provided, and Miss Gozzard can accompany instrumentalists if required. Please make sure your son brings all sheet music or instruments on the day. We are looking forward to our in-class concerts!

Year 5 British Basketball League Playoff Finals O2 Arena SUNDAY 19 MAY 2024 The Habs Prep PE Department would like to offer your son a great opportunity to experience top level basketball at this year's BBL Playoff Final at the O2 arena in London on Sunday 19 May 2024. We will leave at 1pm from the Habs Coach Park and return at 7.30pm. Further information will be shared via EVOLVE with instructions on how to purchase a ticket which includes entry to the arena and return travel by coach after the October half term.

Year 6 Remembrance Day IMPORTANT INFORMATION On Remembrance Sunday we will be taking part in the Radlett Remembrance Parade. This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 6 pupils from both the Prep and Junior Schools to march alongside other people in the community, in remembrance of the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. Together, the two schools will lay a wreath at the Radlett Memorial.

Year 6 parents - if your child is able to join us to represent the school at the parade, please complete the consent form that has been sent via Evolve.

Participating pupils will need to wear full winter uniform; school coats are permitted but hats and scarves may not be worn. Your child should also wear a poppy.

Pupils should meet staff at 10.10am on Sunday 12 November outside Christ Church St John's, Radlett, from where they will march to the war memorial. The service will then begin at 10.45am. Collection of pupils will be from outside Radlett Library at the end of the service.

PRE PREP NEWS STORIES

Reception Dinosaur Day Forty eager and excited Dinosaur Detectives came to school at the beginning of term for lots of new exciting learning opportunities and experiences! The detectives experienced life as a palaeontologist by excavating a dinosaur frozen in ice, found out about the life of pioneer Mary Anning, learnt a Dinosaur Rap that they performed in assembly, and created a dinosaur craft. It was a fantastic culmination of our learning all about dinosaurs.

Reception Read with me Family Fridays Friday afternoons have brought great excitement in Reception this term as we have hosted Family Fridays.

The children have relished sharing their classroom environments and sharing a book with someone who is important to them. We are grateful to parents and guardians for their support with this.

PRE PREP NEWS STORIES

Reception Nocturnal Animal Visit To start our new learning about nocturnal animals, we welcomed Ranger Stu to school and his collection of fascinating animals. We demonstrated courage by touching the animals, many of which we had never seen before.

Ranger Stu taught us lots of fascinating new facts. For example, did you know that we have five types of owls in England but that only 3 out of the five are nocturnal?

Year 1 Rosh Hashanah Celebrations Year 1 had a fantastic time celebrating Rosh Hashanah.

They ate apples and honey, to symbolise a sweet new year and the children shared traditions from their faith with their friends.

Year 1 Collaboration Joint Playtime The children in Year One met their friends from the Girls’ school to share an exciting afternoon play. They enjoyed games of duck duck goose, learning new hoola-hoop tricks and worked as a team to complete their outside trim trail. Thank you for having us, and we look forward to welcoming our friends over to the Boys’ School next half term!

PRE-PREP NEWS STORIES

Year 2 Collaboration Year 2 boys had a fantastic time meeting the Year 2 girls in our Pre-Prep playground. All of us joined in playing new and familiar playground games, chatted to each other and even had time for a parachute game. We cannot wait to meet up again.

Year 2 Joint Choir The Year 2 joint choir is the first of its kind and on Tuesday they gave an assured and highly entertaining performance of Kye Kye Kule at the Prep Harvest Celebration after only three weeks of rehearsals. They were accompanied by a 6 piece Prep percussion ensemble.

Kye Kye Kule is originally a Ghanian children's song performed across Africa which incorporates call and response.

Year 2 STEM Club Year 2 had lots of fun in STEM making ‘ghost gloves’ by mixing vinegar and bicarbonate of soda together. As the bicarbonate of soda reacted with the vinegar, it formed bubbles that inflated the glove. We are looking forward to the next half term for more fun experiments and activities.

PREP NEWS STORIES

Pupil Leaders Event Haberdashers’ Hall Year 6 House Captains were invited to Haberdashers’ Hall to participate in a leadership event. This was a collaborative event with schools across the wider Haberdashers’ community. The students worked together to explore what is means to be a leader and what qualities they feel a leader should demonstrate.

We were impressed with their teamwork and bonding with other leaders of their age.

Interhouse Tug of War We were excited to hold our first house event of the year, our Inter House Tug of War. The Pupils competed in Phase teams in semifinals to find a winner for each Phase. They showed resilience, competitiveness, and mental strength in competing whilst receiving excellent support from their house mates watching in the sunshine. Well done to Patricks for Year 3 and 4 and Davids for Year 5 and 6. Congratulations to Patricks as the overall winner!

PREP NEWS STORIES

Lunchtime Live Lunchtime Live is such a crucial part of our performance programme here at Habs, offering opportunities to students of all ages and abilities. It was a joy to host our first Prep Lunchtime Live of the year, with performances ranging classical piano through to 90s pop classics!

Students are encouraged to sign themselves up for these performance opportunities, building confidence and experiencing first-hand the rewards of sharing music with family and friends. We look froward to the next edition of this concert series, please speak to Miss Gozzard if you would like to get involved.

PREP NEWS STORIES

Year 6 Hindu Temple Visit The Hindu temple was very fun and educational. First when we came in, we had to take our shoes off to show respect towards the religion. Next, we saw an interesting video on how people came together as a community to achieve building it. A lot of people that arrived in London were kind enough to devote themselves to help make it possible. Everyone got assigned a job. For example, there were carvers that sculpted magnificent Gods on the inside columns. Some others helped create the columns and place them.

Secondly, we went to the shrine room, and inside we saw sculptures of the Gods they worship and paintings of some others. There were also sculptures of the leaders they had before. My friend Syon was very kind as he explained to me about each of the Gods, who they are and what they represent. One interesting fact I learned from Syon is when the Gods stick out their hand showing their palm it means that you can pray to them for peace. In the same room we got to see monks do prayers to the Gods. It was fascinating to see them using small lamps that they were moving around when praying to the Gods. After that the tour guide was really kind and let some people do a prayer, so some boys came up to take water and gently pour it on a statue head while they were praying. The reason they did this is because they believed that if you did that some of your wishes will come true.

Lastly, we visited a small exhibition on how the temple was made and some more information about the Gods and small statues showing what each God wanted you to do. For example, there was a small boy carrying his grandparents because they couldn’t, that shows that he was kind and was helping the community. Next, we took some photos with some amazing statues. That was our visit to the Hindu temple.

PREP NEWS STORIES

Year 4 and 5 Collaboration Day Year 4 and Year 5 shared an excellent Collaboration Day with the Junior School on Monday 2 October, our first collaboration event of the year. They took part in African Drumming, STEM Lego building, sports and building a 500-piece puzzle. They enjoyed having to work together on all the activities, thinking about how they could share their ideas and work as a team to complete each of the tasks. We are looking forward to the Year 3 and Year 6 Collaboration Day after half-term and to further events with the Junior School this academic year.

Rap Author Kimba Visit Kimba the poet visited the Prep and Pre-Prep to celebrate National Poetry Day. He showed us that the pen can be powerful, and that poetry can be performance. In the Y4 workshop the boys made a start on writing a piece of poetry and learned techniques on how to better their poetry: Kimba introducing them to the concept of ‘shampooing’ their poems. In the Pre-Prep, the boys enjoyed Kimba’s warm and engaging delivery of his poetry and felt inspired and empowered by his hip hop rhythms and rhymes. A whole school assembly showed everyone the power of words, and how our imaginations can enable us all to be poets.

PREP NEWS STORIES

Year 3 Roman Day Roman Day was a wonderful experience for Year 3. The boys took part in a wide variety of activities to enhance their understanding about life in Roman Britain, with all the tasks taking place outside in our wonderful woodland area.

One half of the day was spent identifying objects and deciding if they were Roman or not, pretending to be archaeologists digging for finds such as Roman coins and they also had fun on a scavenger hunt where the clues were identified through Roman numerals. The other part of the day was spent learning about the clothing, weapons and life of a Roman soldier where they used their amazing homemade shields to defend themselves against foam javelins. At the end of the day, everyone gathered together to taste and smell some typical Roman food!

Everyone had a fantastic day and learnt so much.

Roman Day is the best day of the year so far! I was fascinated to learn how the ancient Romans lived.

Rafi H. The most enjoyable activity was digging for Roman artifacts because I got to see the things they used.

Harvest Festival We deeply appreciate your generous contributions to our Harvest Festival collection. This year, our donations are directed to the Trussell Trust Food Bank in Borehamwood. The Trussell Trust plays a pivotal role in maintaining a nationwide network of food banks, extending essential assistance, and sustenance to individuals encountering difficult circumstances. Mr. Julian Milner delivered an impassioned address regarding the imperative need for change, aiming to eliminate the demand for food banks in the United Kingdom.

Remarkably, Mr Milner revealed that Hertsmere, as a community, contends with one of the most elevated levels of deprivation, with the Borehamwood food bank aiding over 9,700 individuals in dire situations by providing emergency food parcels last year, a significant portion of whom were children. Your contributions are received with immense gratitude and will significantly contribute to assisting those in need, demonstrating the strong sense of community values at our school.

Under 11 BPSFA 7 Football Winners 2023 Our Under 11s had a successful start to their football campaign by winning the BPSFA Boys’ 7-a-side Football tournament held at Manor Lodge School. After 2 draws and 4 wins, topping their group, the team competed in the final against Cowley Hill. The boys played some exciting football and showed superb resilience and teamwork throughout the tournament.
