Friday 6 October

Autumn Term

Head of Junior school’s message

Happy October!

Last Friday, Dr Bagworth-Mann led our Cornflower Assembly and we were all captivated by the history of Paddington Bear. Paddington Bear is fond of saying ‘If we’re kind and polite, the world will be right’, which is a delightful way of expressing the importance of kindness. Our Harvest Festival allows the Habs community to show kindness and compassion towards others. Thank you for all the donations so far for Akshaya Patra and Islington Centre for Migrants and Refugees; we will be collecting until Monday 9 October.

This week, there have been numerous opportunities for Junior School pupils to learn in collaboration with the Prep School. Year 4 and 5 took part in a range of workshops; African Drumming, STEM Lego, PE and puzzle solving. These allowed exciting opportunities for them to work with others, challenge themselves and have fun.

The Junior School playground is staffed and open to students from 8am. To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our students, no Junior School child should be on the playground before this time, even if they are accompanied by an adult. Breakfast Club is available for families who would like to drop their children at school before 8am.Breakfast Club is available for families who would like to drop their children at school before 8am. Pupils need to be booked in by the Friday of the previous week to be included in the register for the following week. If parents need to make an emergency booking, an email must be sent to Mrs Walsh so that the register can be updated.

Please book via the Wraparound Care link on page 5. If any Junior School students are found to be unaccompanied by an adult before 8am, they will be taken to Breakfast Club for their safety, and a charge will be applied. Please can all parents and guardians be reminded that once you have collected your children, you should return to your vehicle and leave the school site as soon as possible. Year 1 to Year 6

Parents’ Evenings

Parents of girls in Years 1 to 6 are invited to make an appointment to meet with their daughter’s class teacher to discuss progress and how they have settled into their new year groups on Thursday 2 November or Wednesday 8 November, between 4pm and 8pm. Class Teacher appointments are available for everyone and will be 10 minutes long. If your daughter is in Years 3, 5 or 6, you will also have the opportunity to make a 5 minute appointment with her specialist subjects teachers, with the exception of languages teachers for Years 5 and 6. Instead, appointments for these teachers will be available during the parents’ evenings in the Summer Term. All appointments will take place in person in the Dining Hall.

Booking appointments

We will be using an online booking system, which allows parents to select their own appointment time. This can be accessed via this link or through the parent portal on Firefly, clicking the ‘Parents’ Evening System’ button. When logging in you will need to provide your full name as per our records, your child’s full name (no nicknames or shortened names) and their class. When you type in your child’s class you must leave a space between the number and words (1 Purple or 5 Aesc). The online booking system opened at 8pm on Monday 2 October and will close at midday on Monday 9 October. After this deadline you will not be able to create or amend appointments online.

If you have any queries, please contact Mrs Karaolou in the Junior School office on 0208 266 2425.

Appointments with Mrs Summers

Additionally Mrs Summers, who leads our Individual Needs department, will be available for face to face appointments during the parents' evening on Wednesday 8 November or during the school day on Monday 6 November or Tuesday 7 November. Mrs Summers is a teacher with specialist qualifications in supporting pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties and is happy to meet parents of students in all year groups who have any concerns or questions about strategies for supporting their children. If you would like to make an appointment with Mrs Summers, please call Mrs Karaolou in the Junior School office on 0208 266 2425.

Performing Arts Spotlight FRIDAY 10 NOVEMBER

We are excited to hold our first Performing Arts Spotlight of the year on Friday 10 November at 3.30pm in The Sime Hall.

This informal showcase is an opportunity for girls from Year 1 to Year 6 to perform a piece of music, dance or drama to an audience of family members. There is no minimum standard required to perform, but we do request that pieces are ‘performance ready’.

In order to keep the running time to approximately one hour, places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If your daughter would like to participate, please indicate this via this form, which will open at 8pm on Monday 9 October and close at 8pm on Wednesday 11 October. Please ensure that all fields are completed, especially the ‘piece duration’ field, as this will allow us to plan the programme accordingly. Please also note that in order for your daughter to participate, a supervised collector must be able to attend the performance, as these events do not form part of our wraparound provision.

You will be contacted by Friday 13 October if your daughter is performing. If you have not heard back by this date, please note that unfortunately they will not be performing this time.

Priority will be given to girls who were submitted for last term’s Performing Arts Spotlight but who did not perform due to the event being oversubscribed. If your daughter was submitted last term but did not perform, then please submit the form by the deadline anyway, so we have all submissions in one place. We cannot accept submissions via email.

BBC’s 500 Words Competition

The BBC’s 500 Words competition, the UK’s most successful children’s writing competition, has begun! The National competition is open from Tuesday 26 September until Friday 10 November.

This year there are two age categories: 5 to 7 years and 8 to 11 years. The competition aims to inspire creativity, imagination, and a love of writing and storytelling among children and young people.

To enter, children need to write and then type up an original story which is no more than 500 words. We would love to see as many Habs students participate in the competition as possible, so please encourage your daughter to take part. Once your daughter has written her story, please follow this link for more important information and details on how to submit her entry for her.
