Habs Weekly Junior School edition Friday 9 February Spring Term

Head of Junior School’s message This week has been filled with wonderful opportunities. On Monday, we started the week with an assembly led by our Year 6 digital leaders about the importance of Staying Safe Online linked to ‘Safer Internet Day’. All week we have been thinking about how we can create a safer and better internet for everyone within our Junior School community. As part of this, students in Years 4-6 took part in workshops, which focussed on empowering them to achieve a healthy balance between screen time and non-screen time. Through interactive games, the children discussed the pros and cons of technology, and learned about the effects that device-overuse can have on our sleep, working memory, focus, happiness and emotional wellbeing.

On Wednesday, the Junior School participated in ‘Inside Out Day,’ as part of Children’s Mental Health Week. Students and staff all wore an item of clothing inside out, to remind us that sometimes the way someone looks on the outside doesn’t necessarily reflect how they are truly feeling on the inside, so it is important to always be kind and think of others.

Head of Junior School’s message continued… On Thursday, Year 3, 5 and 6 had a very special visit from Georgia Lees, who is the vice-captain of the Saracens Maverick Netball team . Georgia led inspirational netball workshops for all the girls focussing on passing, footwork, spatial awareness, dodging and defending.

On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, our talented Year 4s transported us all to the enchanting world of Neverland through the spectacular performance of "Peter Pan". All the girls showed tremendous, character, dedication and flair that truly left us in awe.

Wishing you a wonderful and relaxing half term,

Mrs Claire Brown Head of Junior School

Bebras Computing Challenge Girls in Years 3 to 6 took part in the annual Bebras Computing Challenge in November. It is run in over 60 countries and last year over 400,000 students took part in the UK and over 3 million worldwide. The competition consists of questions that focus on logical and computational thinking. Every child that took part should be very proud of their achievements and we hope they will look forward to competing again next year. The top achievers in each age bracket received a special certificate of achievement. In the Year 3 age group, this was Moksha who earnt 114 points out of 120. In the Year 4 and 5 age group, Radhika (Year 4) achieved full marks, earning 152 points. There were only 575 students worldwide that achieved this full marks score and we are immensely proud of Radhika’s success. In the Year 6 age group, Tanisha was the highest scorer with 178 points out of 200. The top 10% of students in Year 6 (and above) are then invited to the second round of the competition which is run by Oxford University. This round encourages them to develop their skills further and answer questions that require them to produce algorithms to solve computational thinking problems. We had 8 girls that took part in the OUCC round from Year 6. These were Tianlong, Nikita, Isabel, Amber, Norah, Tanisha, Trisha, Leela, Layla, Thuvaraka, Qaya, Aradhya and Charlotte. We are very impressed with the achievements of all of the girls but special congratulations needs to go to Nikita who earned 26 points in the competition and achieved a certificate of merit.
