Habs Weekly Junior School edition Friday 13 October Autumn Term

Head of Junior School’s message After the terrible news coming out of Israel and Gaza, our focus this week has been on ensuring that all the girls and staff feel supported. We have talked about the importance of kindness, sharing our worries and that we are that there is always someone you can talk to.

Our thoughts are with all members of our community over this difficult time, and we will continue to stand together as a school to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students. The message that has been shared with the children this week is that our school is a place of understanding and compassion, and that now is a time to spread kindness and support each other. We know that these events will affect different children in different ways, and we will be working over the coming weeks and months to ensure that all our students continue to receive the support that is right for them.

We know that many parents will be considering the best way to foster supportive discussions at home. We have compiled some resources that may be helpful when taking with your children, including an upcoming Tooled-Up Webinar on helping young people make sense of traumatic events in the world.

How to talk to your children about conflict and war | UNICEF Parenting Members - Tooled Up Education This week has been packed with opportunities and I would like to share a few highlights: On Friday, last week, Year 1 Girls enjoyed their first collaboration of the year with the Year 1 Boys. The boys were invited to the Junior School for an afternoon playtime; everyone had fun getting to know each other.

Head of Junior School’s message continued On Monday, we celebrated Harvest Festival as a whole school community; we heard from Andy Ruiz Palma, Chief Executive of Islington Centre for Migrants and Refugees about how the food and toiletries that had been generously donated will go to support others.

Also, on Monday morning, Year 6 had an interesting and engaging talk from Georgia’s grandfather, Mr Markson, about his experience as an evacuee during World War Two. His stories captivated the girls, and it was a privilege for the them to hear first-hand about such a monumental period in history.

During Tuesday lunchtime, the playground came alive with cheering and applause, as the Junior School girls supported runners in the Habs Dash.

The Year 2 Joint Choir also performed for the first time at the Prep School Harvest Festival. It was wonderful to see the girls and boys singing ‘Kye Kye Kule’, a West African folk song. The afternoon finished with ‘Heal the World’, which reminded us all about the importance of harvest and our role in making the world a better place.

On Wednesday, Year 5 and 6 took part in a workshop about ‘Digital Resilience’, where they were reminded about kindness to ourselves and others, and how to keep themselves safe online.

Finally, I would like to invite you all to a special St Catherine’s Day Assembly on Friday 24 November, from 8.35am in the Prevett Hall.

RAINBOW TO YEAR 6 INFORMATION CONTINUED

Junior School Playground IMPORTANT REMINDER The Junior School playground is staffed and open to students from 8am. To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our students, no Junior School child should be on the playground before this time, even if they are accompanied by an adult. If students arrive before 8am, we ask that they wait outside the playground with an adult or remain in their vehicle until the playground is staffed.

Breakfast Club is available for families who would like to drop their children at school before 8am.Breakfast Club is available for families who would like to drop their children at school before 8am. Pupils need to be booked in by the Friday of the previous week to be included in the register for the following week. If parents need to make an emergency booking, an email must be sent to Mrs Walsh so that the register can be updated.

Please book via the Wraparound Care link on page 5. If any Junior School students are found to be unaccompanied by an adult before 8am, they will be taken to Breakfast Club for their safety, and a charge will be applied.

Please can all parents and guardians be reminded that once you have collected your children, you should return to your vehicle and leave the school site as soon as possible.

This will help ease traffic flow in the car park for other parents collecting their children.

On Friday 8 December, classrooms will be open from 8am and you are welcome to pop in any time up until 8.30am, when we will revert to normal registration and lessons. This term Family Fridays will take place in the classrooms; there will be opportunities to see the wider school with your daughter in the Spring and Summer terms.

On arrival at school, please use the car park, as opposed to the drop off lanes, and walk to the Junior School. The middle doors will be open from 8am and from there you will head to your child’s classroom, where you will sign in. If you have more than one child involved in the event, older siblings will collect their work and meet you in the classroom of the younger sibling.

Should you be unable to join your child, they will have the opportunity to bring home some of the work to share with you the evening before. If you would like your child to bring work home because you are unable to attend, please contact their class teacher.

Family Friday Parent Talks REMINDER Additionally, we are offering a range of short parent talks for parents to attend. These will take place between 8.30am and 9am, straight after Family Friday, and will consist of a short talk followed by an opportunity to ask related questions. Performing Arts Spotlight FRIDAY 10 NOVEMBER The first Performing Arts Spotlight of the year will take place on Friday 10 November at 3.30pm in The Sime Hall.

BBC’s 500 Words Competition The BBC’s 500 Words competition, the UK’s most successful children’s writing competition, has begun! The National competition is open from Tuesday 26 September until Friday 10 November.

This year there are two age categories: 5 to 7 years and 8 to 11 years. The competition aims to inspire creativity, imagination, and a love of writing and storytelling among children and young people.

To enter, children need to write and then type up an original story which is no more than 500 words. We would love to see as many Habs students participate in the competition as possible, so please encourage your daughter to take part. Once your daughter has written her story, please follow this link for more important information and details on how to submit her entry for her.

Year 2 children have been given their scripts with their assigned roles. Please ensure your child learns their lines over the half term break, in preparation for our rehearsals which will commence after half term. Please note that all decisions on casting are final.

We would also encourage all children from Rainbow, Year 1 and Year 2 to listen to the songs from the show which can be accessed via this link. This will really help your children to get the most out of this experience.

Two routes will be operating during the trial. LH01 will run from and to Swiss Cottage, and LH02 will run from and to HGS & Highgate. Further details can be found in the letter from the Transport Manager sent on Wednesday 11 October.

The booking request form is now accepting requests and can be accessed by clicking here. Tickets will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis so early booking is strongly advised. The form will automatically close at 7.59pm on Thursday 19 October 2023. Should all seats be allocated before this time the form will clearly change to a request to be added to the waiting list and no further booking requests can be submitted.

Anglo-Saxon Day REMINDER On Friday 3 November, Marvellous History will be coming into school to run an immersive Anglo-Saxon Workshop Day with Year 4. It will be a wonderful opportunity for the children to handle artefacts and learn all about this period in history.

To add to pupils’ engagement with this interactive day, please can we ask that you enable your child to come into school dressed as and Anglo-Saxon on 3 November. We would encourage you to use clothing that you already have at home – please click here for some outfit ideas

Shirt request for D.T. lessons REMINDER After half term, in D.T., the girls will be completing an upcycling project - making a bag from a man’s button-down shirt (short or long sleeved). Please could you supply your daughter with a shirt that is no longer required and send it to school in a named bag by Wednesday 1 November or sooner. Swim Squad REMINDER Swim Squad will not be taking place on Thursday 9 November and Thursday 23 November.

Year 5 Trip to The Hive As part of our work on rivers, Year 5 will be visiting The Hive in Epping Forest on Friday 3 November. Please can consent be given on EVOLVE and the packed lunch request form be completed by 12pm on Thursday 12 October. On the day of the visit, all pupils will need to bring • a named water bottle • a snack that is free from nuts and sesame • a hooded waterproof jacket • a pair of wellington boots in a named plastic bag. If you wish them to take their boots from school, please supply a named bag for these.

Year 5 Jewish Living Experience visit On Tuesday 14 November, in support our work in RS, Year 5 pupils will be visiting the Jewish Living Experience in Borehamwood,. This visit will take place during the afternoon, returning to school in time for usual going-home arrangements to apply.

ACE Climbing Wall Two spaces remain for Year 6 Climbing Wall, commencing after half term. This will take place on Mondays after school. Collection is at 5pm from the Prep School Reception.

YEAR 6 INFORMATION

Remembrance Sunday SUNDAY 12 NOVEMBER On Remembrance Sunday, Habs will be taking part in the Radlett Remembrance Parade. This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 6 pupils from both the Junior and Prep Schools to march alongside other people in the community, in remembrance of the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. Together, the two schools will lay a wreath at the Radlett Memorial.

Year 6 parents - if your child is able to join us to represent the school at the parade, please complete the consent form that has been sent via Evolve.

Participating pupils will need to wear full winter uniform; school coats are permitted but hats and scarves may not be worn. Your child must also wear a poppy.

Pupils should meet staff at 10.10am on Sunday 12 November outside Christ Church and St John's, Radlett, from where they will march to the war memorial. The service will then begin at 10.45am. Collection of pupils will be from outside Radlett Library at the end of the service.

Year 6 Arts Award

IMPORTANT REMINDER If your daughter is taking part in the Arts Award trip on Tuesday 21 November and you would like to collect her directly from the Radlett Arts Centre after the visit, please email Miss Galvin to confirm (egalvin@habsgirls.org.uk).

The collection time from the centre is 4.45pm and the meeting point is the front desk. If you are running late, we will take your daughter back to the school car park in the minibus, as unfortunately, we will not be able to wait.

Point of Light Award by the Prime Minister, Mr Rishi Sunak Moksha (3A) has been honoured with the Points of light award by the Prime Minister, Mr Rishi Sunak for her work as a sustainability advocate. The award was presented to her Friday 6 October by the Deputy PM, Mr Oliver Dowden. Moksha presented the 'Rainbow of Change' that she painted herself to Mr Dowden; this will now be on display to inspire many more at his office in Whitehall. Well done Moksha!

ACE Focus Year 1 Painting by Numbers Painting by Numbers is an opportunity to be both creative and mindful. We started with colouring by numbers and now we have moved on to using paint to create our masterpieces! While we’re being artistic, we listen to classical music and leave each week feeling refreshed!

Year 2 Joint Choir Year 2 girls and boys have been singing together on Mondays after school. With the Prep. School, we have been learning Kye Maya Kule, a West African folk song and the wonderful anthem ‘Heal the World’.

The Year 2 Joint Choir have been invited to sing at the Prep School Harvest Festival on Tuesday 10 October and we are all very excited for this first performing opportunity for our boys and girls together!

Year 3 and 4 Quiz Club In Quiz club, we explore a wide range of topics through quizzes. So far this term we have quizzed on capital cities, animals and national flags, with requests for a Habs quiz, famous people and history waiting in the wings. The enthusiasm and energy of the quizzers is unending - they do love a quiz!

ACE FOCUS

Year 4 to 6 Cross Country Cross Country is all about making fitness fun! We play games such as Stuck in the Mud and take part in relay races, as well as challenging ourselves to complete the course. We build team-work skills by competing in pairs or push ourselves individually.

“I love cross-country club because we get to run altogether and then eat our school packed lunch together in the dining room.” Lia (5 Aesc) “I think that cross-country club is lots of fun because we get to do exciting games and we also run the cross-country course!” Niamh (5 Aesc) “I enjoy it so much because we have so much fun altogether doing running activities. Year 3 Teambuilding Day On Wednesday 13 September, Year 3 enjoyed a morning of exciting and challenging team building activities hosted by WiseUp. In small groups, they worked together to tackle a range of tricky but fun tasks that encouraged their communication and team work skills.

Year 5 Teambuilding Day “On Wednesday 13 September, Year 5 had a Team Building session. It was awesome. It was a great experience saving Kevin the Llama by cracking the clues and it was clear all our team mates had fun. We would recommend it to the other years!”

Eloisa and Ari (5 Aleph) “The puzzles were challenging, but a great learning opportunity! They got our brains working, our teamwork building and our friendships strengthening. We even managed to save Kevin the Llama.”

Myra (5 Aesc) “I loved Teambuilding Day because it really helped me to get to know my classmates better and find clues to help save Kevin the Llama.” Leila (5 Aesc) “I loved playing with the hula hoops and building towers with them – it was challenging but super fun! The main thing is that Kevin the Llama is safe and sound!” Katie (5 Aesc) “Team Building day was so fun and packed with brain teasers and strategic problems. I loved working as a team and joining in with the cheers and groans, as well as sprinting with pure eagerness to gather clues and to find out our next activity. Year 2 Joint Playtime with Prep On Friday 22 September, Year 2 visited the Pre-Prep for a joint playtime with Habs Boys. In mixed groups we played Splat, The Farmer's in his Den and a variety of parachute games. We had a lot of fun seeing our Year 2 friends and we are looking forward to our next collaborative activity.

Year 4 and 5 Collaboration Day Year 4 and 5 shared an excellent Collaboration Day with the Prep School on Monday 2 October. They took part in African Drumming, STEM Lego building, sports and building a 500-piece puzzle. They enjoyed working together on all the activities, thinking about how they could share their ideas and work as a team to complete each of the tasks. We are looking forward to the Year 3 and 6 Collaboration Day after half-term.

Year 5 and 6 Digital Resilience This week, Years 5 and 6 took part in workshops on Digital Resilience. The girls enjoyed discussions around social media and online gaming, staying safe and pro-social online behaviours. All the girls agreed that they were more informed digital citizens following the sessions and felt more empowered in making informed decisions online and better understood the implications of their actions.

Year 2 Puppetry Show On Thursday 12 October, Year 2 were invited to join L5 to watch a performance by Swallow Wings Puppetry. It told the West African story of how Anansi the spider brought light back to earth. Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed the show and were amazed by the different puppets and styles featured in the production. Year 2 are looking forward to helping L5 with their next art project on puppets.

Year 4 to 6 Inter House Cross-Country Congratulations to all of the students in Year 4, 5 and 6 who took part in the Inter House Cross-country competition on Monday 18 September.

This was a fantastic school event which enabled every child to demonstrate courage, ambition and curiosity whilst representing themselves as a member of their House within our HABS community.

When we combined all of the results from Year 4, 5 and 6 the overall Inter House cross-country results were:

Chameleons finished in 4th place

Seahorses finished in 3rd place

Puffins finished in 2nd place

Aardvarks finished in 1st place

Well done to everyone for all of their energy and enthusiasm shown throughout this event.

Year 6 Netball vs NLCS On Wednesday 27 September, all of Year 6 made their way to NLCS to take part in 6 netball matches, with every girl taking part and displaying great enthusiasm and excitement to take to the courts for the first fixture of the year. All teams worked hard together, communicating well and showcasing excellent passing, intercepting and shooting skills. A great start to the netball season, well done to all who participated.

Year 5 Intra School Netball Tournament On Thursday 28 September, all of Year 5 took part in a round-robin tournament. They all experienced what a competitive netball tournament involved demonstrating many of the school values, ambition, courage, curiosity and community. Congratulations to all the teams, they displayed wonderful sportsmanship whilst showing a determination to win!

“I really enjoyed the Year 5 friendly netball tournament because I loved playing different positions whilst learning and having fun with friends. I liked encouraging my friends and having penalties and toss ups like real tournaments. I was delighted when my team came joint third! I would really like to do more tournaments now that I know what is involved.” Leila (5 Aesc)

Year 6 Netball vs Berkhamsted On Wednesday 4 October, the Year 6 girls travelled to Berkhamsted for the second fixture in the season with all girls taking to the courts again. In lessons and training, the girls have been working hard to become more versatile on court and play a wider range of positions to develop all skills required to effectively succeed in match play. Their hard work came to fruition, with some fantastic performances across all courts demonstrating improved passing, shooting, movement and leadership skills. It was great to see all the girls playing and having fun representing HABS.

Years 4, 5 and 6 Division 10 Swimming Gala On Thursday 5 October, 30 students in Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in a competitive Division 10 swimming gala at Habs Boys school.

Thank you to Charlotte and Maiya who demonstrated excellent leadership and enthusiasm in their new roles as the Year 6 swimming captains. Thank you to all of the swimmers, staff and spectators who played a fantastic role in creating a very supportive and encouraging atmosphere.

In the Division 10 gala we were competing against RMS and Abbots Hill. In the overall results Year 4 and 5 finished in 1st place and Year 6 finished in 3rd place.

Congratulations to all the swimmers who demonstrated excellent determination and effort in the first league gala of this academic year.

Year 6 NLCS Netball Tournament On Saturday 7 October, fifteen Year 6’s took part in the NLCS Netball Tournament playing against many local schools and totalling up 88 minutes of playing time across the morning. Taking to the courts in unseasonably warm conditions, the girls worked tirelessly across all their matches, earning some hardfought wins, draws and narrow losses. The green team placed 3rd in the plate competition and the yellows placed 6th. Most valued players for the day were Tianlong (6 Aleph) for the green team and Naiya (6 Aleph) for the yellow team. Congratulations to all who took part, we look forward to seeing the teams continue to progress after half term.

Year 3 Celtic Harmony On Thursday 21 September, Year 3 embarked on a trip back in time to an Iron Age village that brought their History topic to life! Split into two tribes, The Mammoths and The Stags, they practised their hunting skills, expertly built dens and even traded some Stone Age goods!
