Friday 23 February Spring Term
Friday 23 February Spring Term
We have had so much fun this week celebrating International Mother Language Week, and because of the INSET day, we have even more to look forward on Monday. Over the course of the week, we will have enjoyed 40 language learning opportunities across Reception –Year 6, run by our incredible parents and grandparents, covering over 20 different languages!
From dressing up, to sharing cultural insights linked to recent Chinese New Year celebrations and the use of symbols in pictograms, from bringing a classic language like Latin alive linking it to various other languages to using music to help practise greetings in Yoruba and Swahili, we've had so many valuable learning opportunities this week - for the teachers and parents as well as the students!
There are so many cognitive as well as social benefits to learning languages; increasing creativity, memory and concentration, and fostering tolerance, empathy and cultural awareness, not forgetting languages allow you to access and succeed in an increasingly globalised world. I am sure you will all agree that we are so fortunate to be part of this wonderful, diverse community. An enormous thank you once again to all our fantastic volunteers – we hope that you enjoyed your visit as much as the boys did and would love you to come back next year.
Warm wishes,

Please click here to read a useful summary of things parents should be aware of when it comes to thinking about your child’s use of social media. The summary is particularly useful to use as a platform for these conversations with your child
We would like your assistance to support the school by collecting several items that you may want to offload as you are no longer using. This may be useful if you are about to undergo a “spring clean” and would be a valuable learning resource at school. This is to help recycle as many things as possible in support of the environment. Any of the following items would be welcomed;
matchbox cars, small rubber/plastic animals
Large colourful buttons
Hula hoops – large and small Skipping ropes
Any small balls – tennis, fun, play Frisbees
Plastic food items from kids' kitchen sets
Large bangles
If you have any of these items, please can these be brought in and handed to your son’s Form tutor marked for the attention of Mrs Tailor. Thank you for your support.
In order to ensure the safety of the students in After School Care, it is important that all students are booked in, in advance using the link below. Please note that if your child is not booked into After School Care, we may not be able to accommodate them. This includes if your son is attending for a short period of time, either before or after another after school club. Should a club be cancelled, and your son is to attend After School Care, you will not be charged.
For any late on the day bookings, please contact the school office directly to ensure your son is booked in. Please be advised, a late charge of £8.00 will be incurred in these cases. Please ensure you fill out the form for all After School Care bookings. Please click here to book your child into After School Care.
FRIDAY 1 MARCH
We are excited to be supporting Sebby’s Corner as part of our St David’s Day celebrations. Sebby’s Corner is a Barnet based charity offering family referrals to ensure no child goes without any essentials. Pupils will have an assembly by staff from the charity prior to the day and on the day, will be volunteering for them by packing essential clothing packs. You can find out more about Sebby’s Corner on their websitewww.sebbyscorner.co.uk
To help support the charity further, we are asking all boys to wear non-uniform (no football shirts please) and bring in either £2 or one of these items to donate: An unopened packet of nappies (any size)
Unopened children’s toiletries
In addition, pupils can also bring in money to:
Buy a David’s Baking recipe book- £2.
Participate in a “guess the teacher as a child” game- 50p
Thank you as always for your wonderful support.
Please click here for further information regarding the Parent Information Evening with Dr Kathy Weston which will take place on Monday 26 February from 7pm to 8pm in the Prevett Hall at the Girls’ School
Please be reminded that morning drop off at the Prep School is from 8am. Pupils should not be arriving to school earlier than this time as they will not be supervised in the playground or in the classroom. We appreciate your support regarding this. Should you wish to drop your son earlier than this time, Breakfast Club is available from 7.30am in the Girls School.
Introducing our exciting new DT Recycling Project! We are on a mission to make a positive impact on the environment, and we need your help. We are calling on everyone to gather up those old cotton t-shirts and milk bottle tops that might be lying around. Instead of letting them go to waste, we are turning them into something incredible. By collecting these materials, you are not just cleaning out your closets; you are contributing to a sustainable future. Boys can bring in any old t-shirts and bottle tops to our designated collection point after the half-term break and let us transfer them into new products. By the end of the Spring term, boys will hold a charity sale to sell their products and raise money for charity. Together, we can make a difference and create a greener, cleaner world for generations to come!
We are looking forward to receiving entries for Habs Prep Young Musician of the Year and all the entry links to post audition videos are in the attachment provided, alongside the date of the various finals to which Parents/Guardians of chosen finalists will be invited. Unfortunately, a few of the dates in the previous poster (from last week) were incorrect so Please click here to make a note of the revised dates. In addition, although the deadline for most of the entries is Sunday 3 March, as the piano category finals will be on Tuesday 5March, the deadline for piano entries is Monday 26 February.
WEDNESDAY 28 FEBRUARY
Reception will be celebrating National Science Day next week with a host of exciting activities, from exploring solids, liquids and gasses to electric circuits. Please note that this is not a non-uniform day and therefore, your child should wear what they typically do on a Wednesday. Guided Reading and phonics will not take place on this day; on Monday the children will take home their three books for the week instead. We look forward to celebrating Science in all its wonder!

WEDNESDAY 6 MARCH
To enrich our history topic on Ancient Egypt, we have arranged for ‘History off the Page’ to spend the day with us on Wednesday 6 March. The children will take part in a range of cross curricular activities using authentic tools. There is an opportunity for 4 parent volunteers to help on this exciting day. If you would like to get involved, please email Mrs Percival (percival_j@habsboys.org.uk).
We would like the children to dress up as an Ancient Egyptian. Costumes do not need to be complicated:
Tunic: This can be made from a simple white oversized t-shirt, pillowcase or even an old sheet folded in half, stitched and a hole in the top for your head with a sash or belt over it. Sandals: (Optional) Simple leather sandals are good (school shoes must also be bought to school for playtimes)
Collar: A collar is not essential but can be easily made from a circular piece of cardboard with a hole cut into it for your head. You can decorate it with an Egyptian-style pattern.
