Head of Prep School’s Message
Ms K Umpleby
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It has been a fantastic first couple of days back with the students. It has been lovely hearing of their summer adventures, and, despite the heat, it has been great to have the corridors and classrooms buzzing with energy and excitement again. Our new Haberdashers’ in Reception and Year 3 have begun to settle into their new environments and routines. Although it is inevitable that some have felt a little uncertain at times, they have been so brave and displayed so much courage. We are all incredibly proud of them!
During my first assembly of the year yesterday, Years 3 to 6 explored and discussed what it is that makes our school special, what is it that makes a ‘Habs’ boy, a Habs boy, and the students came up with some super examples: ‘we have good manners, show respect to everyone and act with maturity.’ ‘We are kind, honest and act with integrity.’ ‘We are humble, we work as a team, and we are courageous.’ My personal favourite, ‘we are just amazing.’
However, here at Habs, it is not only the boys that are amazing, we have incredible staff too. But what makes a ‘Habs teacher’ a Habs teacher? Care, compassion, and kindness, absolutely, but also high expectations, of both their students –academically and behaviourally, and of themselves. We strive to do the best we can and be the best we can. We push and challenge our students to be the very best versions of themselves. Habs teachers innovate, they are creative and forward-thinking. We want Habs Prep to be the top Prep School in the country –you must aim for the stars to have any chance of reaching them.
We have welcomed six new members of staff this week: Mrs Best, Mr Miller, Mr Gillard, Ms King, Mrs Gent and Mr Quarrell. As you know, home school links are incredibly valuable and while we know our teachers are looking forward to getting to know you and your students, it is important that you get to know them too. Each week, one of our new teachers will write an introduction to themselves, which we will share through the newsletter, starting with Mrs Best, our new Senior Deputy Head - Academic. I hope you enjoy getting to know them.
Have a great weekend!

Year 3 to Year 6 Young Geographer of the Year Competition
Calling all budding Geographers! Young Geographer of the Year is the Royal Geographical Society’s annual competition recognising the outstanding work of the next generation of geographers. The theme for this year’s competition is ‘A blueprint for the future’ and gives students the opportunity to share their innovative ideas for how a sustainable future could be achieved.
We are looking for forward-thinking ideas to address problems in areas such as food production and supply, energy and sustainability, water security, resources, population growth, transport, travel and environmental and biodiversity management.

Pupils in Key Stage 2 are required to submit an A3 size poster which can be hand drawn or produced digitally. All entries must adhere should be eye catching, innovative, informative and accurate with geographical vocabulary. They should include a plan for at least one geographical issue with annotated maps, images and/or diagrams.
The deadline for entries is Wednesday 27 September. Entries should be given to Miss Jeffries
who will choose a selection to submit on your behalf to the national competition as well as winners per year group. All winners of the national competition will be invited to an awards ceremony in London. Please do ask Miss Jeffries if you have any questions.

WhatsApp Groups
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
It has come to our attention that some pupils have been engaging in WhatsApp groups during the summer break. As a school, we discourage their use as they come with a huge variety of pastoral and safeguarding issues.
We ask parents to support the school in this, however if they feel their sons’ must be members of these groups, that parents are vigilant and access them regularly to ensure the suitability of content. We thank you for your support regarding this.

Family Photos
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
New!
In Reception we are excited to create a ‘Our Class Families Book’ to help to learn about each other and celebrate what makes us unique. To help with this, we ask that you please send in photos of people who are special to your child. Each child will have an A3 sized page in the book and therefore, you are welcome to send several photos.
Your child will draw and annotate around the photos and present/discuss their page with the class. You can send in photos as a hard copy; if so, please drop us a note in the message book to say they are in your child’s bag in case they forget to retrieve them. Alternatively, if you would prefer to email them, please email Miss Pearson at pearson_n@habsboys.org.uk or Miss Lewis at lewis_l@habsboys.org.uk. Thank you for your help with this.
