The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School CCF Biennial Inspection 2018 Foreword The Combined Cadet Force enjoys popularity in nearly 500 schools across the UK. In a society where our servicemen and women find themselves increasingly isolated form daily civilian life due to their operational tempo and security concerns, the CCF has become even more important to educate the nation about what our Armed Forces do. The Combined Cadet Force is a uniformed and disciplined youth organisation that is sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. Through successive Governments the CCF nationally has been engaged in an expansion project with many new contingents opening in state schools throughout the country. The emphasis for the Cadets in schools is on personal development, teamwork and leadership. The military activities are a tool to deliver exciting and engaging training that develops young people. Cadets must learn to lead themselves, to develop self-sufficiency and personal discipline before they can lead others. The Contingent delivers a wealth of life skills that are transferable to family, educational and working lives. Each of the Sections in the CCF share a core syllabus but more importantly they celebrate their service identities with sailing in the Royal Navy Section, field craft and shooting in the Army Section and all things flying in the Royal Air Force Section. Each year the performance of the Contingent is reviewed through the Annual Assurance Report. The Biennial Inspection is the School’s opportunity to celebrate the training and the involvement of the Senior Cadets through their time in the School. All of the Senior Cadets and Staff do an incredible amount of work in the background to make the training year, Field Days, camps and the Biennial Inspection what it is. Thank you all.

CCF Charter The broad function of the Combined Cadet Force is to provide a disciplined organisation within a school so that students may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance, and a sense of service to the community. It is firmly believed that the self-discipline required in service life are equally important in the civil life of the nation today.

The Inspecting Officer Captain David Joyce BEng(Hons) MSc MPhil MA MIET CEng Royal Navy
David Joyce joined the Royal Navy in 1988 and served on a variety of ships and training establishments during the first stage of his career as an Engineer Officer. Since promotion to Commander in 2010, he has specialised in Human Resources with successive assignments responsible for training requirements, engineering training delivery, strategic HR and financial planning. In addition to his engineering degree, he holds Masters degrees in Science (Defence Simulation and Modelling), Philosophy (by research) and Arts (Defence Studies), is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He was a member of the Corporation (governing body) of Havant Sixth Form College between 2014 and 2017. Promoted to Captain in April 2017, he now heads the team responsible for the Royal Navy’s engagement with University Technical Colleges and their equivalents across the UK, and the Royal Navy’s contribution to the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to young people.
