Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
We believe in building a world where everyone has a decent, safe, and affordable place to live.
Our dedicated Executive Staff and Board of Directors plays a vital role in shaping our organization’s policies and programs with our diverse expertise and shared commitment to affordable housing initiatives, enabling us to make a lasting impact on the lives of local families in need of safe, decent, and affordable homes.
• Habitat for Humanity began in 1976, formed by Millard & Linda Fuller. With the personal involvement of U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, and the awareness they have raised, Habitat now works in all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries worldwide and has helped more than 59 million people achieve strength, stability through affordable housing.
• In 1988, Habitat for Humanity of Richland & Crawford Counties, our local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and a registered 501c3, is formed. Our charitable organization was founded by a dedicated group of community leaders who shared a vision of providing affordable housing solutions to those in need, with an initial grant from the Richland County Foundation.
• In late 1989, we embarked on our first home rehabilitation projects, bringing new life to existing homes in our communities. Shortly thereafter, in a momentous occasion, we broke ground on our first complete home build. Today, we have completed over 50 home builds and rehabilitations, providing safe and decent housing options for local families in need — each one representing a new chapter of hope and stability for deserving families.
Most people are surprised to find that construction activity accounts for only a portion of the Habitat for Humanity operational model. In addition to general contracting, HFH functions as a socially responsible mortgage lender. While not traditionally recognized as a lender like a bank or mortgage company, our organization provides loans to qualified individuals or families seeking to purchase homes through our independent underwriting criteria. Here's how:
• Underwriting & Loan Approval
• Zero Percent Interest Loans
• Sweat Equity Requirement
• Loan Servicing & Continued Support
Unique to our affiliate is a 3/10 Vested Equity schedule that can significantly benefit Habitat for Humanity of Richland & Crawford Counties’ homeowners by fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility while also building generational wealth. Here’s how:
• Ownership & Responsibility
• Building Generational Wealth
• Stability & Financial Security
• Community Development
“Everyone — all of us, every
last person on God’s earth — deserves decent shelter. It speaks to the most basic of human needs — our home — the soil from which all of us, every last person, either blossom or wither.”
― Millard Fuller
The Habitat for Humanity of RCC Critical Repair
Program is a lifeline for homeowners facing critical repairs or accessibility challenges. Through this program, our dedicated team partners with local families to revitalize their homes, ensuring they remain safe, secure, and comfortable places to live — whether it’s fixing a leaky roof, repairing a damaged foundation, or making a home’s entry wheelchair-accessible.
As part of our homeowners’ path to homeownership, we provide financial education classes. We partner with area experts to cover topics such as budgeting, credit cards and credit reports, debt and loans, saving and investing, planning for the future or emergency situations, as well as HFH homeowner mortgages.
Gaining a more in-depth understanding of these important concepts is crucial to building a better future.
Our revitalization and beautification projects impact our communities by improving the health and wellbeing of residents; revitalizing public areas, removing blight, improving both functional and aesthetic quality, and, in general, giving residents improved access to public areas and a better sense of well-being and safety.
We believe in collaborative fundraising and plan engaging social events, bringing together individuals and organizations from various sectors — including business, government, nonprofit, and philanthropy. Networking opportunities at our events and our annual gala leads to valuable partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations that benefit the businesses in our community, amplifying the impact we all have on a local level.
“My faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.”
― President Jimmy Carter

During specified application periods, we welcome potential homeowners to submit their application and required income information to our affiliate. Initial qualifications will be made based on need, willingness to partner, and the ability to pay for an affordable mortgage.
Once the applicants have been qualified by HFH standards, a home visit will be scheduled for all potential partner families to verify the need for better housing and to determine prioritization within the program.
Part of preparing our partner families for homeownership includes many educational opportunities. Among these are financial literacy, property maintenance, investing, and wealthbuilding.
Individuals will be required to complete 250+ hours of ‘sweat equity’ once approved for a Habitat home and prior to closing. These hours may be completed in various ways and may be accomplished by other family members, where appropriate.
Once all requirements have been met, and final walkthroughs and financial verifications are complete, a closing date will be scheduled to sign all mortgage documents and to receive long-awaited keys to their new home!
