Heating and Cooling Products See your
Energy-efficient heating and cooling with greater respect for our environment.
Less than three decades ago, worldwide concerns about ozone layer depletion led to a major shift in refrigerants used for heating, cooling and refrigeration. Meetings were held, laws were changed, and in the early 2000’s, Tempstar transitioned to R-410A refrigerant, as one of the first HVAC manufacturers to go all-in on a non-ozone depleting refrigerant.
Today, as worldwide concern over global warming continues to rise, most nations, including the United States, are adopting stricter controls over the global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerants. That’s why, for all ducted and ductless residential and light commercial products, we are going all-in on a new refrigerant designed to keep you comfortable while dramatically lowering its global warming potential (GWP) – and that is R-454B.
We anticipated the need to reduce the GWP of refrigerants more than a decade ago. Now, after years of research, development, and fieldtesting, we are more than ready to meet the new requirements. We plan to transition the majority of our product line to R-454B ahead of the EPA’s expected 2025 deadline.
Committed to Sustainability
With R-454B, Tempstar proudly displays our commitment to environmental stewardship. It’s a refrigerant that delivers a 75% decrease in global warming potential while maintaining original R-410A’s non-ozone depleting properties. It makes for a pretty darn good air conditioning or heat pump system, too.
Putting it in Perspective
* Assuming Carrier Corporation residential, DLS and light commercial units shipped with refrigerant annually. https://www.epa.gov/energy/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator THIS DEVELOPMENT DIDN’T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT
To provide a little perspective, switching all of our residential and light commercials systems to R-454B would be roughly the equivalent of avoiding the greenhouse gas emissions from over 5 million gas-powered passenger vehicles for one year.* That’s a big impact!
A new refrigerant for a better future
Prime Warranty enhances the existing OEM warranty of the equipment. We can add to the length of the parts warranty, and we can add labor warranty. We can provide additional warranty on most any type of product that an HVAC contractor will install.
Partnering with an extended warranty company has great benefits for the HVAC contractor. Three are:
• Fixing a problem before it happens. Think of the uncomfortable situation of giving a customer a labor bill on a system that you installed about 18 months ago. It is a situation that you cannot win. Either you have an upset customer, or you eat the repair. With an extended labor plan, that pain goes away.
• Setting your business apart from your competition. Your competition may have a 10 year parts and compressor warranty, but you have a 10 year parts, compressor AND labor warranty (with Prime). This can really help close the sale.
• Most importantly - you can get more than just the sale; you can get a customer! The lifeblood of any service/retrofit business are the customers where you establish a lifetime relationship. If your customers understand that YOU are providing the 10-year labor warranty they will come back to YOU. This is why most of our labor warranties are included, not sold.
As the future races into the past, I am reminded of a study I recently read. As of May 2024, the HVAC industry faced a 110,000-technician shortage. It even went on to suggest we are losing technicians at a rate of 25,000 yearly. We have all felt the pain of being short on manpower. Late nights, early mornings, and long weeks are a few issues we face. So, the question is: How can we affect change in this trend? Short answer, Invest in our future technicians.
One question I get a few times a year is “How can I find good technicians?” My answer always ends up being a discussion. Anyone can snipe a technician, pay them way more than you were originally prepared to pay and hurt your competition. However, does that help long term? Will that technician stay with you if they get a better offer? Does that help the industry gain well-trained technicians?
May I suggest something? Find all (or just one) of the local Vocational Technical high school programs. Find all the HVAC trade schools (or just one). Start visiting them. Invest time in them. Speak to the instructors and students. Get a feel for where the industry is going through the educational programs. Learn about how the new generation views the world (this is important when you employ them for retention). Have a few superstar students do a ride-along. Hire new technicians then train them in the ways of your company. This investment is more likely to produce loyalty to your company, and you get to watch a young technician transform into a solid well-rounded loyal Tradesman.
Our industry needs to be invested in by both large and small businesses. I can say from personal experience that watching someone new to the industry develop and grow is a great feeling. To know you had a part in helping shape a young man’s/ woman’s future by assisting them to hone their diagnostic and repair skills is one of the greatest feelings in the world. The investment does not have to cost you much at all. Just a few hours a year can make a big difference in the life of one or many people as you start to develop relationships with these educational places and, in the end, the students. And do not forget to support the trades for secondary education in your high schools. We all know that some of the best-paying jobs can start with these programs. Unfortunately, college is what is still being pushed almost exclusively in schools these days. Together we can affect a positive change for our industry and the lives of countless students that would otherwise not continue their education at all.
