Demographics

Al Karama is one of the older areas of Dubai widely considered as a residential development but also offers many commercial projects. The name of the area is inspired by the Arabic word, Karama – meaning: ‘dignity’. Al Karama occupies an ideal location with Zaa’beel Street as the main thoroughfare of the central area, giving way to numerous commercial units. It is one of the most accessible places from all of the city.Part of Bur Dubai and close to the Dubai Creek, Al Karama has a unique vibe home to many low-rise residential buildings. Most visitors think Dubai is the home of gigantic skyscrapers while that’s not the case with Al Karama. Made on a tight grid system, the area spans a meagre 2 km, yet houses thousands of people, leading it to be one of the most populated areas in Dubai.

MACRO PLUS FUNCTIOn : COMMUNITY GARDEN

A playful space for children to engage, learn and plant.

One of the two things that Karama lacks is crucial to a fulfilling life, greenery and nature. The people in Karama have made it clear they would love to enhance the park. Not ripping the existing trees is the first step. Proposing a community garden where the people plant various plants as a community, this would invite wildlife. According to the interviews, kids love to visit the park to play and socialize with other children, be close to nature and the birds that the park invites.

A community garden is where children can learn more about nature and how to care for their environment.

The community garden will also benefit karma as a whole, once the community grows enough plants in the garden, the people in Karama could take some plants back to their apartments or place them in between ally ways like how done in the s h e i kh Hamda n c olo n y, spreading the greenery throughout Karama.

The relationship between the greenhouse and the courtyard wich is an extension of the greenhouse.

Placing different functions on each side according to the demographic and heat maps.

Materials

Ferrock is a carbon-negative environmentally-friendly compound that is a suitable alternative to concrete. It is made up of 95% recycled materials and is cheap to manufacture. Ferrock is made by combining steel dust waste with silica. Ferrock has five times more strength than concrete. This means it can withstand more weight, compression, and damage without being destroyed. Ferrock emits carbon dioxide during production. white coating the structur that reflects the sun’s heat
