hange begins with me. I cannot change the world but if each one can reach one, our society will be a caring and peaceful one.” This is the sentiment that guides the lives of a group of energetic young people at the Roadside Baptist Church Skills Training Centre."

With a goal to improve the quality of life of people of all ethnic groups and religious backgrounds in their community, the youth arm of the centre assiduously work to accomplish this.

One of the approaches

Roadside Baptist has found to be effective in fighting against gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS is through peer education by adults and youths. They meet in small groups to have a more personal interaction with persons affected by gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS. Speaking with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Steve said he was motivated to pen his composition “Struggles of a Woman” because he wanted people to become more aware of abuse and at the same time showcase his talent.

“I had always wanted to be an advocate on social issues. I also wanted to be a

part of the fight against violence of all forms. For the past months, I was involved in workshops and training programmes on the prevention of gender-based and other forms of violence, and I’m happy that I managed to grasp some additional knowledge. With the knowledge gained, I plan to pass it on to others through my music,” he revealed.

Steve is one of many youths who are passionate about their humanitarian work in saving lives and encouraging youths like themselves to be role models in society.

Peer educators, mostly youths, present information through the performing arts, videos, leaflets and brochures. An integral part of their voluntary work is counselling, support, referrals and other services.

Recently, a few of them were of great encouragement to a youth who was hospitalized and had practically given up on life. Their presence at his bedside at the hospital comforted the ailing youth. Follow-up visits and counseling also helped him to continue with his studies and to better face his challenges.

Additionally, the peer education component of the organisation encourages abstinence, faithfulness, and HIV testing. It promotes positive living through awareness and "godly fear".

Knowing that people, youths in particular, usually relate to their own age groups, the centre’s peer educators strategically use this technique to help peers develop skills to transition from negative to positive behaviour.

Discussions focus on healthy relationships, developing self-esteem, avoiding substance abuse and managing anger. These take

Peer education, for this group of young people, has been a rewarding opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain the respect and confidence of their peers, and improve their own knowledge and skills. The recognition that they gained as role models in society is the catalyst that helps them to strive daily to live responsibly and to reach out to their peers.

A humble but indomitable humanitarian Visually impaired 69-year-old Kenzena Romao is resolute in her endeavours to help educate those with limited opportunities

K

enzena Romao, though visually impaired for almost 13 years, has never allowed her disability to dampen her spirit.

“I have a passion for teaching,” she revealed in an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine. “I have been teaching for almost 40 years now. I used to teach at commercial schools. Throughout my teaching career, I have met students who were slow learners, and I was able to help them be successful academically. I credit my grandmother who was very instrumental in instilling in me a love for teaching, and helped me both academically and spiritually.”

For 13 years, Kenzena’s programme, Amazing Grace Mission, has focused on school dropouts and slow learners. A subsidiary of the mission is the New Foundation Initiative, a non-governmental organisation that offers remedial courses for youths and adults. The organisation’s literacy programme includes craft, reading, mathematics and other subjects.

Kenzena recalled that her mission started as a small Sunday school group at her home and grew into a flourishing organisation, with classes being held at the New Scientific Church on Hadfield Street, Georgetown for the past three years.

“My technique is to separate them into groups, assessing their abilities because each individual is different.

I first want to see how much they know, so I would give them a book to read to determine that. We focus mainly on reading because without this you cannot understand anything else.

Then we move on to writing.

That’s why we keep our numbers to a minimum, just over 20 students, to conduct oneon-one sessions with them. This is also more manageable for us,” she noted.

mission is to integrate school dropouts back into the school system. She teaches them the alphabet – which they also have to recite backwards – and challenges them with spelling and math problems. After they have successfully completed the 6-month programme, they are enrolled at St Barnabas Special School.

“These techniques have been effective because I have personally learnt and developed these over the years of my teaching career. Unfortunately, due to my illness I am not able to do as much as I use to do, but I don’t allow it to discourage me. For those students who have moved on to St Barnabas, we keep in contact with them to track their progress,” she disclosed.

With regard to the funding of her programmes, the humanitarian said she does not “waste time” running around seeking sponsorship, and so whatever little she has she invests in her students. She was tired of being pushed around, and decided to just focus on her programme.

“Everything is funded by myself and other members. I’m not going to waste time running behind people to sponsor, and I don’t have to wait on that to help these ones. Back in my days there were some, like my grandmother, who would gather the community children to teach them. They didn’t need sponsorship to do it, and it’s the same thing I’m doing. She said it has so far been a rewarding life and she is not tired yet. She believes her calling is a God-given one, and feels very blessed to be able to help others at such an old age. She also noted that her efforts have kept her active – physically and mentally.

“I used to cry a lot when I got ill,” she confessed, “because I couldn’t do as much as I used to, but with encouragement from the children and others, I was able to keep going. I also learnt a lot from teaching these children and it has kept me alive.

And so my encouragement is to never allow a disability to get you down. Rather, use it as a driving force to improve yourself and help others. Pray and have faith. I urge children to read as much as they can, and urge parents to encourage their children to read more. We live by our motto, ‘Read more, learn more, be literate’,” Kenzena declared.

‘Not just homemakers or baby bearers’ Partners in Unity encourages women to recognise their empowering values

ounded by a group of women, Partners in Unity seeks opportunities to improve the lives of the vulnerable while at the same time empowering themselves.

The organisation was formed in November 2008 by the contestants of the Miss Guyana Renaissance Pageant 2008. In an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, public relations officer, Patricia Helwig, a contestant in the 2008 pageant who was first runner-up, said that the group of women decided to form a non-profit organisation because they “saw the need to empower other women and bring self-worth to those who did not believe in themselves or had low

self-esteem.”

She recalled, “We became like sisters and formed a bond and decided the pageant shouldn’t be the end of our relationship. We decided to form this group in 2008.

We formalized it and the Partners in Unity was born.

Our focus was to empower women. We found that many women suffer from low self-esteem; even the contestants who entered the pageant didn’t have much confidence in themselves.

Knowing this, we decided it was apt to form this group.”

The PRO stated that the initial objective of the organisation was to help women feel better about themselves, not just as homemakers or “baby bearers”. They met every third Sunday on a Alpha Children's Home regularly receives supplies from the organisation

monthly basis for games nights, cooking classes and craft making, among other activities. Eventually, men were added to the group.

Helwig added that as the group grew the women realised inviting men would make the organisation more effective and so their motto is, ‘Empowering PersonsBoth Men and Women’.

There are currently 15 active group members.

“We then decided that we wanted to give back to society and so partnered with Alpha Children’s Home in Berbice to donate items during August holidays for the children and for the holidays in December. We have helped Alpha in the form of books, clothing, food stuff and toys at Christmas. We also plan a Christmas concert, among other festivities, for the kids there,” she disclosed.

Moreover, the group has also partnered with the Ivy’s Home for Elderly Women located on Camp Street, where members pamper the women at the home. Partners in Unity has also donated fans for the home and has pro-

vided delicious meals on a number of occasions.

Recently, a timely donation in the form of cleaning agents and toiletries was made to the Ruimveldt Children’s Home, located in East La Penitence. The charity group is grateful for the assistance received from Pastor Wade Ridley of the Restoration of Life Ministries.

“We are very thankful and will continue to provide services to the needy where necessary. Giving back has helped us women, and men, to really build our confidence as we play a vital role in giving back to society. We are moved by the children’s stories, some have made us cry, and that is why we are ever more fervent in our endeavours to continue our work. We also invite those who are passionate about helping to partner with us in unity in order to give back to our society,” Helwig declared.

The Shaping of Guyanese Literature

2012 Guyana Prize for Literature Part I

he 2012 Guyana Prize for Literature (awarded September 2013) in a way fulfils an A. J. Seymour prophecy made more than four decades ago when Seymour, writing on Guyanese Literature, concluded that the eventual winner in the whole affair will always be Guyana, the country.

There are many more layers of meaning to what took place at the recent awarding of the Prize but the focus here will be on

Significantly, “Collected Fictions” was published locally, as was “The Comfort of All Things”. “Collected Fictions” was published by its author, while “The Comfort of All Things” was published by Moray House Trust. The other collection of poems, “Black Cake Mix”, was submitted as a manuscript, and so was Telford’s play “Sauda”.

The winning entries were described as follows: “Collected Fictions” is “a semi-autobiographical collection of short fiction that addresses racial and politi-

ment, the effects of emigration with the originality of expression and the consciousness of the writing process…it makes good use of interiority , point of view and good use of linguistic registrar.”

“Black Cake Mix” is a “collection of evocative poems with a well-realized Creole voice.” Bryce noted that “the judges acknowledged the distinctive voice and vision that stood out in this year’s submission.

Alphonso’s poetic range includes dramatic monologues, dialogues and first person narratives which form a device in which she

“The Comfort of All Things” is “an elegiac musings by a mature poet on aging and mortality.” “The Comfort of All Things”, the chairman of the panel observed, is “a well-written collection where the quality of individual poems varies quite significantly. The task the poet had set himself of writing simply...is in fact a challenge. At its best the simplicity is rare and striking; the tone is truly moving and reflective. The dominant tone is both meditative and joyful. Overall the collection achieves the clarity and timelessness that comes

Morality

A

t university, a lecture once strayed to the morality of stealing. A hypothetical situation was envisaged where our family was starving and we had the opportunity to steal a tee shirt, obviously with the idea that the stolen item would be sold for cash to buy food.

The question arose “Would you do it?”

Only two or three persons said an unequivocal no, the other 15 persons had “no problem” once they “weren’t caught and sent to jail.” Clearly it was a legal concern for most rather than a moral one.

An ATM of a bank in the UK once spewed out double the amount its user requested, leading to a crowd gathering and “prompting arguments among those trying to use the faulty machine”, which in turn led to the police arriving to “restore calm”. It reminded me of the tee shirt question.

Obviously people knew the “free money” wasn’t free nor was it their own money if they didn’t have that much money in the bank to begin with. They knew they were committing a moral and legal wrong, but since it is unclear if the bank could recoup the money and no one was around to stop them, (until the police arrived that is) morality and legality took a back seat.

The abovementioned acts suggest the thin line supposedly civilized human beings walk, and emphasize the necessity of laws to keep us in check. Morality alone would not help many in our society.

A fact outlined by Thomas Hobbes’ social contract which proposed that man’s obvious moral failings led to the “mutual transferring of right” in which men voluntarily relinquished some of their freedoms to the state, which made laws to prevent the chaos that could occur if an individual was left to his own devices.

In short, the threat of punishment by loss of freedom – imprisonment – becomes the only reason most persons aren’t stealing, fighting or killing in a society.

Remove or reduce that “threat” and there could be anarchy. An individual’s innate sense of rightness, apparently varying among people, is not enough to maintain a civilised society.

Whether it is a “peaceful march” that aims to highlight dissatisfaction, the potential for anarchy presents itself among those whose morality is less than ideal, and mob rule takes over as disorder develops that impacts society.

It asks the question how do we deal with children in today’s world when spanking as punishment is considered violence and “time-outs”, curfews and temporary “bans” on their favourite devices do little to curb increasing antisocial behaviour.

Already persons doubt the effectiveness of jail terms, so if imprisonment is no longer “effective”, what next can be done to reign in or restrict humankind’s tendency to throw morality out the window whenever possible?

In 2007, a second year student at UG, her foray into pageantry began when, pursuing her diploma in Communication, she entered that year’s Miss India Guyana Pageant. A first runnerup in that event, Kenwah ventured into modelling in 2008, presenting for fashion designer Sonia Noel, Digicel Guyana and Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL). She was also a contestant in Noel’s Guyana Model Search 2008. In November 2008, she graduated with a Communication diploma from UG, while already a registered student pursuing a degree in Economics there. In 2009, Kenwah entered the Miss Bartica Regatta Pageant to earn first runner-up. After this, she took a break from pageantry and modelling to focus on her Economics degree. In November 2011 she graduated with a degree in Economics. Between 2011 and 2012, she worked first as a communication officer at the Government Information Agency then administrative assistant to the UG pro-chancellor. Kenwah is currently working towards establishing herself as an exporter of some of Guyana's best local commodities. She is also creating a proposal to help enhance the lives of children aged 6-13. In addition, she is a part-time volunteer with Youths for Guyana. Her hiatus from pageantry recently ended when she decided to vie for the Miss Guyana Universe 2013 crown. Kenwah stands out as an avid humanitarian and will use the pageant’s stage to not only showcase her beauty and intelligence but to ardently spread awareness on social issues close to her heart.

Fossa

he fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) is unique to the forests of Madagascar.

A relative of the mongoose, a fossa can grow up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) long from nose to tail tip, and weigh up to 26 pounds (12 kilograms). Unlike mongooses and more like felines, the fossa has retractable claws and formidable catlike teeth.

It is the largest carnivore and top predator native to Madagascar, and is known to feed on lemurs, wild pigs, mice and almost any other creature it finds.

The fossa is a solitary animal and spends its time both in the trees and on the ground. It is active at night and also during the day.

ntil recently, scientists had mistaken the puma-like fossa for a primitive kind of cat.

The fossa has been assessed as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN Red List since 2008, as its population size is said to have declined by perhaps at least 30 per cent between 1987 and 2008 due to widespread destruction of its habitat.

Guzman was born in Abilene, Texas, to a Mexican father, and an American mother of European descent. He moved to Sacramento, California, his mother's native city, at a young age. He attended Sierra College. Guzman started as a model in 2006 while attending college and also training and fighting in Mixed Martial Arts tournaments in his spare time. The 20-year-old "We Can't Stop" singer, who once said she was "disappointed" in herself for getting caught smoking salvia, now has no problems talking about her recreational drug use. In new outtakes from her recent Rolling Stone interview, which accompanied her topless cover shoot, the ex-child star raves that "weed is the best drug on earth," especially compared to cocaine.

nother happy milestone for the Royal family is set for next month when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend christening services set for their son, Prince George.

The ceremony will be held Oct. 23 at The Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace, a spokesperson for Kensington Palace announced Friday.

Prince George, born in London in July and third in line to the British throne, will be christened by The Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Reverend Justin Welby, in a private service, with further details announced at a later date, the palace said.

The chapel site is where the body of Princess Diana, who would have been grandmother to Prince George, was laid at rest for a week following her death in a Paris car crash in 1997.

Amanda Bynes to stay on psychiatric treatment until 2015

istressed actress Amanda Bynes won't be appearing in court anytime soon, according to her lawyer Gerald Shargel. The 27-year-old troubled celebrity is currently on psychiatric treatment at the UCLA Medical Center in California and would most likely be kept there until 2015.

Appearing in a New York court to settle his client's case for a bong-throwing incident earlier this year, Shargel told the judge that Bynes was not fit to stand trial for the reckless endangerment and marijuana possession charges filed against her for the next 18 months. He is working on the charges to be dropped altogether on the condition that the former Nickelodeon star commits to staying out of trouble.

Bynes threw a bong out of the window after cops entered her Manhattan apartment, responding to a call by building managers who reported that the "Easy A" star was smoking pot. It was only one of a string of incidents over a period of several months where the TV and film actress exhibited her worsening erratic behavior for which she was eventually put under long-term psychiatric care and legal conservatorship.

Recently, Bynes' mom Lynn had already withdrawn her petition for permanent conservatorship since her daughter was already under involuntary psychiatric hold and conservatorship of her doctors.

Balan: 'I don't care what Amitabh Bachchan tops Vidya people said about me at Cannes' Screen Survey 2013 V

mitabh Bachchan might as well reclaim the title of the One-Man Industry with him topping the Screen Survey as an actor with the biggest brand value in Bollywood.

He also topped the Screen Annual Survey last year being dubbed “biggest legend of all times”.

In the survey, 37 per cent believe that he is the biggest brand in Bollywood today. Leagues ahead of

the current crop of actors, which include Shah Rukh Khan (14 per cent), who propelled the brand wave in the nineties to the newage turk Ranbir Kapoor (8 per cent). Interestingly, a quality associated with the legend is 'Humility' — the only actor with that distinction on the survey.

As an individual though, the actor, who's been showered with many monikers to his credit include the Angry Young Man, the One-Man

Industry, Shahenshah and Big B, continues to loom large over the world of Indian cinema and entertainment at 71.

Bachchan seems to also fulfill all the criteria listed in the survey to be the biggest brand — presence on social networking sites and appreciation in Hollywood and international forums.

There's no dearth on the latter, which got triggered off in 1999, where Bachchan was awarded 'the greatest star of stage or screen' of the millennium in a BBC online poll followed by the installation of his wax statue in the prestigious Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum making him the first living Asian to be featured there. It's no wonder that 41 per cent believe that there's no better brand ambassador than Big B for Indian cinema on a global platform. (Indian Express)

fter rejecting Gaurang Doshi's film in 2007, why has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan signed up for it again?

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan may have given her nod to Gaurang Doshi's film “Happy Anniversary” to be directed by Prahlad Kakkar, but the actress seems to have strangely forgotten something.

In 2007, it was widely reported that Ash had walked out of Doshi's project which was then called “Happy Birthday”. She took this step after he was allegedly accused of physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend starlet Flora Saini.

Flora had found an unlikely supporter in the midst of her ordeal in B-Town's leading star. Ash had apparently taken the stance after working in Jagmohan Mundra's 2006 film “Provoked” that tackled domestic abuse.

After playing a victim on screen, she had decided against being part of Doshi's film as he was involved in a domestic violence case.

The film was to have John Abraham as Ash's co-star.

Interestingly, Doshi had even admitted at that time that due to his problems with Flora, Aishwarya decided not be part of his project. The filmmaker had claimed that there were certain forces working against him as he was at that time also going through a bitter divorce.

Says a source, "Aishwarya's nod to his project now has come as a surprise. She may

the schedule.

However, reports have it that Ranveer Singh has been hospitalised in Mumbai and that he is down with dengue.

A source from Yash Raj Films has confirmed the illness and hospitalisation at a suburban hospital.

Not much has been revealed about his condition; however, fans hope the actor makes a speedy recovery.

Hospital sources were surprised that the actor continued to work despite his severe condition.

"It is not-yet-known how long Ranveer will stay in the hospital and be back in action. But he is in a very positive state of mind as usual," a source said. Bollywood director Yash Chopra had also contracted dengue last year and died after his condition worsened due to the fatal illness. (Indian Express)

A source told the paper: "Priyanka had some free time, and wanted to buy some new books. She never imagined that she would get mobbed, so she was accompanied by only one bodyguard. Though she made a hush-hush trip to the store, the information leaked out.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Anger Management

ang violence cause of high levels of mental disorders," a BBC online report headlined from a study that surveyed more than 4,500 young men in Britain. More than a quarter of these men reported being violent but were not involved in gangs, while 108 (about 2 per cent) reported being gang members.

Researchers found that regardless of gang involvement, a history of violence was strongly associated with a higher risk of mental illness.

But the risk of developing some types of mental health conditions was significantly higher in gang members. These conditions include: Generalised anxiety disorder Psychosis Antisocial personality disorder – a type of personality disorder characterised by lack of empathy, being prone to violence and poor impulse control Drug and alcohol dependency Analyses suggest that in gang members, this increase in risk could be related to dwelling on violent thoughts, having experienced violent victimisation and fear of further victimisation.

But a major drawback of this study is that it did not determine whether the men had a psychiatric diagnosis before they joined a gang, or if their mental health problems developed afterwards.

As the study was a survey, it also could not carry out the in-depth interviews

MBSR is all about training our minds to focus on different parts of our body. As we focus and observe our bodily sensations, we are able to develop our mental awareness which changes the alpha rhythms in the brain which play an important part in being relaxed. Stress reduces the frequency of these waves which would result in the body being tensed or uneasy. Being uneasy or tensed can lead to angry outbursts at the slightest instance.

According to research, there is strong evidence that the MBSR

required to give formal diagnoses.

Despite these limitations, these results provide an insight into a complex probl e m that

needs to be tackled.

The study was carried out by researchers from Queen Mary, University of London. It was funded by the Maurice and Jacqueline Bennett Charitable Trust and the UK National Institute for Health Research and published in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Psychiatry.

The study recruited 4,664 men aged 18-34 to take part in a survey. The men were asked questions about their gang membership, violence and use of mental health services, and were also assessed for psychiatric diagnoses.

Researchers then looked at whether psychiatric diagnoses were more common in men who were members of gangs or engaged in violence.

The researchers selected

techniques of increasing attention control have measurable effects on alpha wave behaviour in patients' brains. Alpha rhythms are a key part of the sensory system: they're related to how the brain processes and filters irrelevant sensory inputs.

If we carefully select the information we feed our minds with and the thoughts we entertain, we would be able to manage angry outbursts. What we think can make us angry: take for instance, a man thinking of the verbal abuse he endured from his wife – the thought of this alone can trigger anger in that man and result in him acting violently towards his wife.

Filtering inputs of information and thoughts is a crucial part of

locations at random to obtain a representative sample of men aged 18-34. They also specifically selected young black and ethnic minority men from these regions, as well as men from

lower social classes.

Additional locations where there were high levels of violence and gang activities (Hackney and East Glasgow) were also selected to ensure that a reasonable number of male gang members were assessed.

The researchers compared characteristics and psychiatric diagnoses in these three groups, taking into account factors that could influence the results (confounders), such as unemployment, ethnicity, age and other factors.

They also used statistical methods to analyse whether any associations could be statistically explained by attitudes toward violence, victimisation experiences and characteristics of violent behaviours.

The researchers found that psychosis, anxiety, alcohol dependence and anti-

higher order cognitive processes such as selective attention and working memory. Both of these processes are based on a person's attention to focus on relevant information while ignoring irrelevant information. Without proper filtering, your ability to carry out even the most basic cognitive operations can be crippled.

To summarize all that has been mentioned we should understand that being aware/mindful of our thoughts, actions and experiences and how they affect us; also focusing our minds ONLY on those things which will make us happy, will help to reduce stress which in turn will help you manage your anger.

social personality disorder were more common in violent men and gang members than in non-violent men.

Violent men and gang members were more likely to have attempted suicide than non-violent men.

Violent men and gang members were also found to use psychiatric services more regularly than non-violent men.

Statistical analysis suggested that these factors could account for the higher

The researchers concluded that gang members show "inordinately high levels of psychiatric morbidity, placing a heavy burden on mental health services".

They advise that gang membership "should be routinely assessed in individuals presenting to healthcare services in areas with high levels of violence and gang activity".

This study has found that psychiatric conditions are common among male gang members and violent men. There are, however, several important points to note: This type of study only assessed the men at one point in time, so it cannot determine whether the men had a psychiatric diagnosis before they joined a gang, if they were exposed to or committed violence, or if their mental health condition developed afterwards.

Men who agreed to take part in the survey may differ in characteristics to those who did not (a form of selection bias). It was not clear exactly what proportion of the men who were asked to

participate did so.

The survey involved young men aged 18-34 and the results may not be representative of younger or older men.

The questionnaires used to identify psychiatric problems are accepted questionnaires, but they are not the full psychiatric interviews needed to give a formal clinical diagnosis.

The questionnaires were based on self-reporting and did not use more objective measures, such as an assessment of criminal records. There may therefore be some misreporting.

As the authors note, there is no consensus on the definition of "gang membership", so they used three out of five criteria from the UK criminal justice agency that could be used in a questionnaire format.

As the authors note, the study highlights "a complex public health problem at the intersection of violence, substance misuse and mental health problems among young men".

10 thin, crisp whole-grain crackers 1 1/4 cups chopped walnuts, toasted 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 shallots, finely chopped

1 tablespoon fresh thyme 2 ounces pak choy, trimmed 1 tablespoon water 3 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (6 ounces each); pounded evenly Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

Method Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Pulse crackers and 3/4 cup walnuts in a food processor until finely ground.

Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook garlic and shallots until soft, about 4 minutes. Add thyme, and cook about 4 minutes; transfer to a plate. Add pak choy to skillet. Cook until wilted, about 1 minute. Chop pak choy, and add to thyme mixture. Stir in remaining 1/2 cup walnuts.

Season each chicken breast with 1/4 teaspoon salt and some pepper. Lay 1 chicken breast on a plate. Spread 1/2 cup thyme-walnut mixture onto chicken, leaving a 1/2-inch border all around.

Roll and tie with kitchen twine. Cover with crumb mixture, pressing to coat.

Repeat with remaining chicken, thymewalnut mixture, and crumbs. Transfer to a rimmed baking sheet, and bake until golden, about 30 minutes. Untie, and slice. Serves 6

Ingredients 1 (18 1/4 ounce) box devil's food cake mix (Betty Crocker Super Moist suggested)

1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 large eggs Confectioners' sugar or granulated sugar, for rolling

Method Preheat oven to 350F째.

Stir (by hand) dry cake mix, oil and eggs in a large bowl until dough forms.

Dust hands with confectioners' sugar and shape dough into 1.5" balls.

Roll balls in confectioners' sugar and place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake for 8-10 minutes or until centre is just set.

Remove from pans after a minute or so and cool on wire racks.

here are an estimated 10-15 million unregulated gold miners around the world, operating in 70 countries. Artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest source of mercury pollution in the world after the burning of fossil fuels.

About 15 percent of the world's gold is produced by artisanal and small-scale miners, most of whom use mercury to extract it from the earth. In Indonesia, the industry supports some three million people - but the miners risk poisoning themselves, their children and the land.

In Central Kalimantan the effects of this unregulated industry on the environment have been devastating. Around Kereng Pangi, a town in Central Kalimantan surrounded by goldfields, the miners have cleared virgin forest once home to orang-utans and hornbills.

What is left is a lunar-like landscape, its pools polluted

tons of earth. Miners use mechanical sluices to trap the mud that is rich in gold.

They mix this with mercury in buckets using their bare hands.

Mercury is a persistent pollutant - it does not break down in the environment.

On the Indonesian island of Lombok, its potential for harm is multiplied because it is being used in conjunction with cyanide.

"Together mercury and cyanide create double the problem in the environment," says Dr Dewi Krisnayanti, a soil scientist specialising in heavy metals at Lombok's Mataram University.

Cyanide helps to dissolve the mercury, and when the waste is spilled into paddy fields it binds with organic molecules in the environment, becoming methyl mercury. This is far more toxic – in Minamata it was methyl mercury that poisoned thousands of people.

Syafrul, says controls on illegal imports of mercury are being tightened. The government hopes the forthcoming ratification of the UN treaty on mercury - known as

"There are 60,000 hectares of denuded area that are completely pitted like this," explains Sumali Agrawal the technical director of YTS, a local NGO working to mitigate the impact of mercury.

"You can see it on Google Earth - a white patch in the middle of a green landscape.

This was formerly tropical rainforest on a sand substrate. If you left it alone for 50 years, some vegetation would grow, but there would never be a diverse rainforest here again."

There are no large nuggets of gold to be mined around Kereng Pangi - only tiny particles of the precious metal are present in the

ples of rice seeds and leaves from the paddy fields in the south-west of the island.

"The concentration of methyl mercury was the highest ever recorded in a laboratory - 115 parts per billion," she says. "I felt very sad when I saw the data, because methyl mercury can be absorbed by plants, get into the food chain and affect human health."

The same methods are used to recover gold in other Asian countries too, and these are also rice-eating nations. If the contamination of paddy fields was found to be widespread, it could be devastating.

Indonesian's Assistant Deputy Minister of the Environment, Halimah

the Minamata Convention will bring international assistance to help Indonesia's miners find alternatives to the use of mercury.

"There is pollution in the environment, pollution in the rivers, destruction in the mountainous areas and destruction of our protected forests. It's a similar situation in almost every province and we have 34 provinces in Indonesia," says Halimah, an environmental scientist by training.

Not just miners

Fahrul Raji, a man in his early 30s, is not feeling well. At the health centre in Kereng Pangi, he explains his symptoms.

"I often have a headache, and I am weak. I have a bitter taste in my mouth."

According to Dr Stephan Bose-O'Reilly, who is examining him, Fahrul is being slowly poisoned by mercury.

"Fahrul's been working with mercury for many years, and he's showing the typical symptoms of mercury intoxication," says Bose-O'Reilly, a German medic who began studying the impact of mercury on Indonesians' health a decade ago. "He also has a tremor and a co-ordination problem."

Although mercury use in small-scale gold mining in Indonesia is illegal, miners still use it to extract gold from the rock or soil.

Fahrul isn't a miner, but he has a gold shop in Kereng Pangi. Every day miners bring him the fruits of their labour - usually a pea-sized piece of amalgam that is mercury mixed with gold.

Fahrul burns it, and the mercury evaporates leaving the gold behind. But the fumes are highly toxic, which is why smelters like Fahrul often show more severe signs of mercury poisoning than miners who use it in the field.

"Mercury is a neuro-toxin," Bose-O'Reilly explains.

"It affects the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that helps you move properly, and co-ordinate your movements. Mercury also harms the kidneys and other organs, but the neurological damage it does is irreversible."

Fahrul's gold shop is on the main street of Kereng Pangi. He sits behind a wooden counter, his blow torch behind him, waiting for business. At the end of the day, the miners arrive with their pieces of amalgam ready for smelting.

Fahrul says he's worried about the impact of mercury on his health, but he has no intention of changing his job.

"This is a family business that's been handed down to me. My father was also a gold buyer. And he's about 65 now, and still looks healthy."

Even though he has symptoms, Fahrul has convinced himself that the risk he runs is small. And that is the problem with mercury its effects are not dramatic enough, in the short term, to act as a viable deterrent.

The worst case of mass mercury poisoning the world has ever seen happened in Japan in the first half of the 20th Century.

Symptoms appeared only gradually in the fishing village of Minamata. At first, nobody could explain why people began to slur their speech, or stumbled when they walked. They would have trouble swallowing, or tremble uncontrollably. Children were born with disabilities. Thousands would die with what became known as Minamata disease.

It took 30 years - until the 1960s - to identify the cause of the suffering: a local plastics factory that was dumping mercury into the bay. The mercury was contaminating fish, the staple food of the local population.

If Fahrul continues to smelt mercury in his gold shop, and inhale the poisonous fumes, it is likely his symptoms will get worse.

Bose-O'Reilly says his urine contains 697 micrograms of mercury per litre - far more than usual.

"This is incredibly high," he says. "Most people would have one or two micrograms at most."

Dr Rachmadi Purwana, professor of Public Health at the University of Indonesia is worried.

"The threat is there every day and it is escalating. We have to remember that in Japan a small place like Minamata shattered the whole world by revealing Minamata disease. In Indonesia, it's not only in one village, it's throughout the country. In nearly every province, there is smallscale gold mining."

And what is Rachmadi's fear if there is no action?

"A national disaster."

Apple’s Unveiling Could Make or Break a Business

A

bout 200 people — most of them from the news media — gather in a Cupertino, Calif., auditorium to watch Timothy D. Cook, Apple’s chief executive, unveil new iPhones.

The people who make it their business to know these things say they expect Apple to reveal a longawaited, less-expensive iPhone to woo buyers in emerging markets; a few brightly coloured alternatives — yellow, blue and even pink — to entice teenagers, and a higher-end, g o l d a n d graphite model to draw t h o s e who enjoy spending lots of money.

Of course, the news coverage was comprehensive. And you were able to split the followers of the reporters’ blogs from the event into three categories: Apple fans; entrepreneurs who hope they can take advantage of new phone features; and rival technology executives worried that Apple could render their businesses irrelevant in one move.

These annual iPhone unveilings have become a sort of Creative Destruction Day in Silicon Valley.

Remember all those companies that were making nif-

ty little digital video recorders? There aren’t many of them left, after Apple added video recording to the iPhone in 2008. And with every even slightly improved iPhone that adds features or services offered by others, Apple has tightened the screws on a long list of companies, including other smartphone

makers like Nokia and BlackBerry and gaming companies like Nintendo.

The economist Joseph Schumpeter coined the phrase “creative destruction” in 1942 to describe the less-than-tidy way free markets lead to progress: the telephone replaced the telegraph; the cellphone replaced the telephone; the smartphone (we’re still in the middle of this one) is replacing the cellphone, and so on. Something gets de-

stroyed and something new and exciting is built on top of it.

Perhaps no other recent product has been quite as much an agent of destruction and renewal as the iPhone, with its long list of features and access to a store of nearly a million apps that can handle thousands of functions.

Need a calendar, a phone book or even a notepad? The phone will do it for you. Forget those pesky paper varieties. Want to take a highdefinition photograph, record an interview or play a video game? All you need is your phone. No need for any other single-serving cameras or video recorders.

“By the time it’s become obvious to competitors, once Apple has taken the world by storm, then it’s a little late to start mounting a response,” said Rita Gunther McGrath, a professor at Columbia Business School who studies innovation at big companies and is the author of the book, “The End of Competitive Advantage.”

So what else is likely to be disturbed by the iPhone and other smartphones?

Expand the question beyond technology and think about smartphones competing for all kinds of consumer

dollars. Ask some 20-somethings if they would rather own a cool new car or a cool new smartphone. They’ll pick the latter, as car manufacturers are learning.

“The iPhone is the Ford Mustang of today,” said Thilo Koslowski, lead automotive analyst for Gartner Research. “These devices offer a degree of freedom and social reach that previously only the automobile offered.”

While some might see the iPhone as a destroyer — if you work for Nokia or BlackBerry, for example, you will most likely share this view — there are others that see it as a creator. The apps store connected to the iPhone has allowed thousands of small businesses to thrive. And a handful of them, like Rovio, the maker of the Angry Birds game whose headquarters is not far from Nokia in Espoo,

Finland, have become large companies.

“What formerly required significant overhead to be successful is now trivial,” said Nicco Mele, who teaches classes on the Internet and politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and is the author of the book “The End of Big: How the Internet Makes David the New Goliath.”

“The rise of app makers has allowed anyone to compete with a corporation from home.”

There is a scary side to that, of course. The destruction and renewal upon which the tech industry has thrived has accelerated thanks to the Internet, cheap smartphone apps and lower costs of doing business. Facebook, for example, which in just a few years has gone from a startup to one of the most powerful companies in Silicon

Valley, has to constantly be on the lookout for the next big threat. And when it can’t take those competitors out at the knees, it buys them, like the photo-sharing service Instagram.

So who is safe from the perils of the smartphone?

No one, it seems. Not even Apple.

The company is no longer the king of the hill in smartphones. Sure, when the new iPhone was unveiled on Tuesday, it will get outsize attention, and competitors will scramble to copy its latest features.

But these days, Samsung sells the most smartphones, and up-and-coming manufacturers like Huawei and ZTE are nipping at Apple’s heels.

That is the thing about this notion of creative destruction: you never know quite know when you stop creating and get destroyed.

Driverless cars coming, but consumers not ready yet W

hile the technology for autonomous vehicles might already exist, consumers nonetheless remain uncertain. Drivers still need to be convinced to let go of the steering wheel and be taken to their destination, driver surveys say -- in spite of the fact that driverless technology is already in some cars.

Almost 50 percent of drivers surveyed by Accenture in 2011 said they would feel uncomfortable in a driverless car, while a Cisco survey in 2013 found that 57 percent of drivers globally would trust a driverless car, showing that with time consumers could become more used to the idea of giving up driving control to a computer.

Interestingly, 95 percent of Brazilian drivers would be happy in a driverless car, 70 percent

in China and 60 and 40 percent in the U.S. and U.K respectively, according to Cisco's Customer

Experience Report.

"I would say that most of what is going to come into these driver-

less cars is already there in present-day cars, for example night vision or lane departure warning [systems]," Prana Natarajan, team leader for Chassis & Safety at Frost & Sullivan.

"We've been seeing these kinds of systems for quite some time now -- lane keeping assistance has been around since 2004. Taking it to the next level is what most automakers are trying to do here."

Cars like the BMW X5 and the Mercedes Benz E-Class due out in 2014 will have basic features like traffic-jam assistance, which manoeuvres the car through the congestion before prompting the driver to take over, Natarajan said, while pedestrian and animal detection were already on some existing models from Volvo and BMW. BMW has been testing driverless systems since 2005 and

says its BMW i3 model will autonomously steer, accelerate and brake in traffic jams. It is currently testing a driverless car prototype that can not only negotiate congestion but can handle motorways. It has 12 sensors, lasers, ultrasonic and a host of cameras that provide 260 degrees of constant surveillance relaying the information to in-car controlling computers.

According to a survey carried out in April 2013 by Pulse Opinion Research on behalf of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, 59 percent of people polled expect fewer accidents as a result of driverless cars. As yet, however, no country has legally sanctioned the use of 100 percent driverless cars, and guaranteeing the technology can never fail is also a sticking point for the certification of automated vehicles.

nspired by his rich Amerindian heritage, Victor Captain has proven to be a promising artist who has created celebrated pieces showcasing his colourful culture.

Born Sept. 14, 1991, in the Makushi village of Surama, North Rupununi, Victor attended the primary school in his village and would later participate in the Iwokrama Wildlife Festival in 2001.

He discovered a love of painting and pursued this

with the encouragement of Makushi artist and art teacher Anil Roberts. He later met venerable Guyanese artist George Simon at the Bina Hill Institute at Annai in 2009 and Simon’s brother, also an outstanding Guyanese artist, Oswald Hussein in 2010.

Victor was privileged to work with Hussein on the design and carving of details of a large totem pole installed at Surama in 2012.

He was also supported with paints and canvas by George

Simon in February 2012.

His art speaks of myths; and beliefs entwined with the natural world abound in depictions of animal life and village pastimes. Victor’s “Banjo Man”, a Makushinamed tiny river fish, is monumentally depicted by the artist. His “Monkey Brush” is another nicknamed story about plant and animal life, describing a forest vine whose buds sprout curving tendrils which monkeys pick and scratch themselves with; with splits in the buds

or pods also bearing flowers that spin off in the wind.

“Full Moon” shows Makonaima watching over his people; his quara (the Makushi word for horse) is painted in undulating, curving lines echoed by an aura of similar pattern; the macaws in “Cacique Crown” provide the feathers for this crown.

“Sun God” tells the story of the chief who could only procreate with his wife in darkness, sending his men to seek some hours of night from the Sun God, who guarded it in the form of an egg, giving it to them with the warning that any harm of their cargo would lose them control of the night.

The egg being dropped and causing twelve hours of darkness every night, the chief’s wife was happy to pick flowers during the day,

uyana is a nation that has a colourful history and is home to several cultures.

For this reason, the richness and diversity of our past, it is critical to preserve our heritage. The relevant organisation, The National Trust of Guyana, is a government enterprise whose mandate propels its commitment to the preservation and conservation of historic buildings and sites in Guyana.

Therefore we aim to enlighten the public about various events, aspects, symbols, landmarks and structures which has moulded our rich and diverse heritage.

As we close the month of September in which we celebrate and promote education, we wish to consider one of Guyana’s oldest educational institutions, Queen’s College, which, not only has

profound standards, but a rich cultural history.

Opened originally as a school for boys, it was called the Queen’s College Grammar School for Boys. Founded in 1844 by Reverend William Percy Austin, D.D., Bishop of British Guiana, its first assembly consisted of a mere fifteen boys. While Reverend Austin was of an Anglican background, he sought to establish the school with a tolerance for, and interest in, attracting non – Anglicans.

However, due to its associated origin, the school’s first administration consisted only of members of the Church of England.

It was located at the Old Colony House in 1844 - the compound that now houses the Guyana High Courts, previously known as the

Victoria Law Courts. The school moved in 1845 to Main and Quamina (then Murray) streets, with a student body of seventy. Again in 1854 it was relocated to its first formal building at Carmichael and Quamina streets, currently home to Bishops’ High School. Later in 1876 its administration was transferred to the state making it a "colonial institution" and thus given the name "Queen's College".

Before settling at its current location in Thomas Lands, at Camp and Thomas roads, it had also occupied the site at which the Ministry of Health is now housed, on Vlissengen Road and Brickdam.

At the Thomas Lands site, the building was officially opened in 1951, maintaining high standards throughout the years, later to be converted to a co-educational institution in the 1970s.

Unfortunately, fire struck on November 16, 1997, where what was considered the heart of the building, was lost. This section included the auditorium, staff room, badminton court, table tennis lounge, bicycle shed and canteen.

However, it was not long before arrangements were made to relocate students to ensure their educational instruction. And later, plans moved apace to reconstruct the portion lost in the fire.

This project was completed and later dedicated on September 19, 2003.

Queen’s College, like many other buildings bears testimony to our historic past, and is merely one which has been partly lost to fire. Many others are daily being vandalised and

over time demolished, and others lost to fires as well.

Georgetown, a predominantly wooden city, is one which cannot afford to lose its heritage.

While monuments or structures form part of our heritage, other intangible elements are part of the fabric of our heritage also. This too needs to be maintained; the institution of the school is one such element since this point at which knowledge is imparted, an appreciation and understanding develops. The institution of the school is therefore a pivotal link in the preservation of our heritage, which is otherwise destroyed or damaged due to lack of knowledge or ignorance.

The National Trust of Guyana, which undertakes to promote and safeguard the nation’s heritage, wishes to remind citizens that preservation is a task which requires the cooperation of all Guyanese as our heritage is conserved for the enjoyment of all.

We Could All Use More Love

was excited the other day. Elated, ecstatic, enraptured and all the other e-words. I received an e-mail from a woman I’ve been courting fruitlessly for several months. She’s been resisting my advances, but as soon as I read the subject line of her e-mail, I knew my persistence was finally going to pay off in a big way. The subject line read, "ILOVEYOU." Yes, yes, yes! She’s finally returning my love, I thought. And she’s declaring her feelings in all capital letters, too! That means she’s really serious. Even before I read her full message, I was ready to dash off an email to her, screaming, "ILOVEYOUTOOBABE!" I wanted to send e-mails to all my friends, saying, "I told you so. I knew she’d come around. I knew she wouldn’t wait until I’m the last man on Earth."

But when I opened her e-mail, I was crushed. Her "love letter" to me was an attachment carrying a computer virus. It was infecting my computer and deleting some of my files.

And even more distressing, it was sending the very same "ILOVEYOU" message to everyone in my

address book, including a number of MEN. Talk about a dangerous virus! I had to act quickly. I didn’t want people to get the wrong idea about me. I know how rumours get started. One day I’m telling a bunch of men I love them, the next day I’m receiving flowers from George Michael. Before I know it, Dr. Laura is telling everyone I’m a biological error. Pretty soon, my mother and Dr. Laura are duking it out, setting off World War III. And I’m hiding in a closet with Donato Dalrymple, the fisherman.

But what could I do? I thought about calling everyone in my address book and warning them about this destructive virus: "If you get a message from me that says I love you, delete it immediately. I don’t love you. At least not in that way – not in all capital letters. Not in the way that Oprah loves Steadman, Kathie Lee loves Frank, or Donald Trump loves himself."

But I didn’t know the phone numbers of everyone in my address book. Some were just strangers who had e-mailed me a joke, wise saying or some other harmless message. And here I was, hardly knowing them, but still telling

them, "ILOVEYOU." What would they think?

You’ve probably guessed that I didn’t really receive the infamous "ILOVEYOU" e-mail, which caused billions of dollars in damage worldwide. But if I had, I would have opened the attachment. Like thousands of people who fell victim to the love bug, I would have been pleased -- for at least a few seconds -- that someone loves me. Even if that someone was a man.

It’s too bad that it took a virus creator to get so many people to say, "ILOVEYOU."

Handy Italian

Big Lorenzo, an Italian fella, is bragging to his friends about his sons: "I'ma so prouda my oldest son. He maka fifty thousand dollar evra year.

Three Fat Raccoons

Sounds of crashing and banging in the middle of the night sent a woman and her husband out to our garage. There they spotted three raccoons eating out of the cat dish. They shooed them away and went back to bed.

Later that week they were driving home and the wife noticed three fat raccoons ambling down the road. "Do you think those are the same ones we chased off?" she asked.

"Hard to tell," said her husband. "They were wearing masks."

Wrong Boots

Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put his boots on?

He asked for help and she could see why. With her pulling and him pushing, the boots still didn't want to go on. When the second boot was on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost whimpered when the little boy said, "Teacher, they're on the wrong feet."

She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on - this time on the right feet.

He then announced, "These aren't my boots."

She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, "Why didn't you say so?" like she wanted to do. Once again she struggled to help him pull the illfitting boots off.

He then said, "They're my brother's boots. My Mom made me wear them."

She didn't know if she should laugh or cry. She than mustered up the grace to wrestle the boots onto his feet again.

She said, "Now, where are your mittens?"

He said, "I stuffed them in the toes of my boots..."

and after awhile he was going to cross the road. Once again the voice shouted: "Stop!

Stand still! If you take one more step a car will run over you and you will die." The man did as he was instructed, and a car came careening around the corner, barely missing him.

"Where are you?" the man asked. "Who are you?"

"I am your guardian angel," the voice answered.

"Oh yeah?" the man asked. "So where the heck were you when I got married?"

Higher Power

A Sunday school teacher said to her children, "We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But, there is a higher power. Can anybody tell me what it is?"

One child blurted out, "Aces!"

Women Talk More

A husband looking through the paper came upon a study that said women use more words than men. It read, "Men use about 15,000 words per day, but women use 30,000."

Excited to prove to his wife that he had been right all along when he accused her of talking too much, he showed her the study results.

The wife thought for a while, then finally she said to her husband, "It's because we have to repeat everything we say."

The husband said "What?"
