A

fter days of uncertainty on the way forward, Australian mining company Troy Resources has taken a decision to dismiss almost 400 workers, a month after it suspended major parts of its operations following the death of one of its employees.

According to an internal memo that was circulated, workers who were initially sent off were told that they would be released by the company as of this week and paid their severance by Friday, November 22.

“The Board has thus decided that all personnel currently stood down will be terminated as from this week.

This decision was made with reluctance and will, nevertheless, assist employees by providing a termination pay-out.

“It is expected that Troy will go back to re-hiring employees as needed for a start-up in the near future and Troy hopes most current employees will be available and willing to return to work,” the memo further stated.

It had initially been reported that 386 workers were sent off base with their jobs in limbo until the company could decide on a way forward while the company kept over 100 of the remaining employees on the ground at its mining operations in Karouni, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

Last week, top officials from Troy Resources had revealed that a decision on the future of the company would be made when the Board of Directors meet. Guyana Times was reliably informed that that meeting was held on Sunday and that a decision would be announced soon.

During an interaction with the media while facilitating a tour, Troy Resources Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ken Nilsson had spoken of pressure being brought on his company. Nilsson spoke about the financial cost being incurred to keep the remaining oper-

ations functioning.

“In a normal month, our total operating cost is around US$4 million, plus we have (arrears to pay). So, we need about US$5 million.

About US$3 million goes back into the local economy in the form of wages, purchases and all the suppliers.

So, US$3 million is not going back into the economy.

You will see the effect of that next month.

“So, the total loss for

us last month – since September, our total cash inflow is roughly US$6 million, so we have no inflows.

For the last month, we lost around that. So it costs us a lot of money. To get the money, we need to produce a minimum of 4000 ounces per month. And we’ve not produced 4000 ounces (in a while). To be comfortable we need US$5 million. We could survive on US$4 million,” he said.

It is understood that all but its exploration activities were suspended in the wake of the death of geologist Ryan Taylor in a mining pit accident. Nilsson had explained that it costs a hefty sum per day to maintain the remaining workers in the downsized operation.

“It would have been very easy for me to say, 'shut everything down, put it in cold storage until things have settled down'. But we choose to believe no, we can sort this out. I don’t have issues with Governments. Everyone is doing what they have to do,” he had explained.

“Without doing anything, I can last another month.

But I cannot go back to production without having a source of money to back you up. I need to be sure that if anything goes wrong or a mechanical problem [arises], I need to have a piggybank of money to back me up,” the CEO had said.

The effects of noise nuisance

O

ver time in the media, there has been a plethora of complaints from persons in various parts of the country pertaining to noise nuisance. In every instance, the frustration of those affected was very evident, and one common gripe was the perceived lack of action by the authorities to fully address the situation. The sources of the audio bombardment include what seems to be ubiquitous bar-b-que limes and other entertainment shows, neighbours, bars and vehicles.

In every scenario, people are subjected to brutal and sustained assaults by high- decibel sounds which often last throughout the night. The harsh reality is that everyone within the affected zone -- including children, the elderly and the sick --is rendered helpless and deprived of sleep. That, in itself, brings or exacerbates related health consequences, as people feel a profound sense of lassitude, since their energy has been sapped.

Some complaints detailed the horrible effects especially on babies and those suffering from illnesses, as woes are compounded.

A toll is eventually taken, and in turn productivity and studies are affected for those who work and attend institutions of learning respectively.

Unfortunately, this is ongoing across the country, and gauging from what is in the public domain, it appears that not much has been achieved by law enforcement in attempts to curb this menace.

Of course some reports are responded to, and action taken, but clearly it does not present a deterrent to those who continue to make others uncomfortable. It begs the question whether perpetrators really understand the impact noise has on people. Further, this may be an impetus for the authorities to relook, not just at the criteria for granting permission for bar-b-ques and entertainment shows, but at the proximity of residents to be taken as primary consideration.

Barring national events, weddings and other necessary events, which are infrequent to some extent, the wellbeing of people must be foremost. It is understood that there is a requirement for the Police, as one of the approving authorities, to get the consent of residents before granting approval for events in question. This is clearly an area in which the public can be advised on whether it is being done in a sustained and thorough manner. Based upon the documented complaints, it doesn’t appear so.

While seeking consent can be seen as considerate in taking the sentiments of residents into consideration, more than likely, it can be an across-the-board consensus, or split. Some people generally do not want to object, while others have every reason to. What obtains in situations when some object? Reportedly, many calls made to Police Stations have a common response: permission has been granted up to midnight. With some events starting earlier in the day, that spells long hours of discomfort for residents.

There are cases when the Police enforce the midnight deadline, but other cases prolong until just before dawn. Many of these events are for profit and are at the expense of people’s convenience.

Bars, including some in parts of the City, blast music unfettered throughout the night especially on weekends. Reports are that calls for relief go unheeded, allegedly for reasons relating to benefits.

The growing phenomenon of parked vehicles belting loud music is having a similar effect. Likewise, what occurs in some minibuses need no explanation. What it means is that many of our school children are regularly exposed to these high-decibel sounds, which are sometimes laced with profanity and incitement to violence, in the same way during village events as from bars and parked vehicles.

For the schoolchildren, this not only poses a health issue, but has a profound influence on their minds and actions. A useful research would be to explore the correlation between the exposure to this type of music and violence and other unsavoury actions in schools by some students. In many ways, this can be deemed as a form of mind-conditioning of the younger ones, which can have serious social consequences. A research on this should be conducted.

While the findings of the research, if conducted, would be extremely useful, there first has to be a firmer acceptance by the authorities of the serious problem and related consequences of loud music, which is a form of pollution.

There is no doubt that the Police are challenged for resources, and their priority would be combating crime. That said, there has to be a commitment to finding a way to make elimination of noise nuisance a priority, thereby paving the way for it to be dealt with in a sustained manner.

In addition, it would be helpful if the Police were to make public not just the criteria for granting permission for related events, but to state what can cause them to intervene in the circumstances even when approval may have already been granted. The affected would need immediate relief, and the Police, under their motto of “Service and Protection”, are expected to protect residents even in these circumstances.

National policy on ageing for Guyanese Dear Editor, The Government of Guyana distributed a summary document titled “Budget 2019”. On page 60, a subtle intent is stated as “reducing inequalities, poverty and vulnerability” and further, to quote page 62, “Government has begun drafting a national policy on ageing, minimum standards for the elderly to be completed during the first quarter of 2019, a pension bill to be tabled in Parliament in 2019, also an elderly welfare services section will be established at the Ministry of Social Protection”.

On page 67, stated as “measures to increase workers’ income” are “increase of income tax threshold to $780,000.00 or one third or whichever is greater; increase wages and salaries for public servants in 2019” and “restart of negotiations to improve allowances in the public service”. Are these statements superstitious?

Therefore, justification is now requisite for enhancement, justifiably.

Editor, prudence opens doors to costs and opportunities by which the providence is knowable that for “mathematical formulas/ calculations” there must be “checks and balances” and therewith for policy positions, “checking and verification” are essentials. Guyana needs inter-

nal auditors and stock verification in all Government Ministries and major business entities; jobs to protect monies.

Hence, to represent the purpose of this letter, these reference points are emphatic of that perspective: (a) old age pensioners received an increase from $19,500.00 to $20,500.00 in 2019, (b) public servants are soon to be paid from 3 per cent to 9 per cent increases retroactive tax-free pay for all of 2019; is NIS also exempted? (c) it is now time to regulate what is to be fair pay for private security workers. There is urgent need to reactivate Guyana Association of Private Security Organisations (GAPSO) so as to guarantee these workers are adequately paid on time and their conditions of work at every post are safe and defensible. (d) The unemployed need to be supported with a welfare-to-work scheme/programme eg six months of stipend by condition to find work during that period or be incarcerated or subjected to community service by necessity.

That provision is to be effective toward the improvement of national health and significant reduction of crimes by income facilitation. (e) The NIS should be obligated to retroactively pay the increase announced early in

2019 by Dec 25. This entity may no longer achieve financial viability without a small increase of contributions to dispense separately from pensions for eyecare, medical and dental. Who is to define and implement these policy measures cannot be allowed to wait and fail the elderly and youths of Guyana? Prudent management must support what is right and sustainable but recover losses and stop future big theft of NIS/the people’s monies, properly. Not $1 million. Nowhere, more so, $600.000,000.00. Courts must question, seek and find and penalise - authoritatively.

The patience of Guyanese is of good report in all facets of life.

Financial systems that are all-inclusive enable Governments to seriously limit “flibbertigibbet’ and create safe yet lovable environments, with happy but very productive atmospheres.

Adorable leadership is admired for persons’ accomplishments as their lifelong works. Following is simple if successive generations ‘self-destruct’ and do not live long to benefit from the returns of their own safety net.

Wage freeze imposed on sugar workers Roopnaraine’s silence

Dear Editor, The GAWU saw media reports regarding responses of officials from the PNC and the AFC in regard to questions posed by the media about the wage freeze imposed on sugar workers since the coalition took office in 2015.

While the responses by the leading officials are not identical, they are very similar. If a person were reading about the state of the sugar industry for the first time, they would no doubt believe the caretaker Government was an angel and had ‘clean hands’. This, of course, we know is really far from the truth.

According to the Stabroek News article, AFC Treasurer, Mr Dominic Gaskin said Government should not be held responsible for the withholding of the pay rises to sugar workers. He is quoted as saying “GuySuCo is governed by a Board of Directors and if that Board of Directors decided that they can give a raise in pay that is entirely within their remit to do so.”

But, as the Stabroek News correctly pointed out, the Board is appointed by the gOVERNMENT and, therefore, a creature of the Administration, it will be guided, obviously, by the instructions and guidance of the Government. What’s interesting is that the GuySuCo Board apparently has leeway to grant increases but other State agencies which can afford to offer pay increases in excess of what is approved for public servants must swallow hook, line and sinker the Government im-

posed increases.

Why two different yardsticks we wonder? Moreover, we do not believe that the Government, if it is really concerned about the plight of sugar workers, who are their employees, would not engage the Board and other GuySuCo officials in finding a way to provide the workers a pay rise. The apparent fact that this hasn’t been done only confirms further that the Government really doesn’t care about sugar workers and their valid and varied troubles.

Mr Gaskin we did recognise to have said that he felt “…we can all do with a raise in pay but I do not know what sugar workers earn”.

Certainly, in our view sugar workers are more than deserving and require a raise in pay. It is sad to know that Mr Gaskin, who occupied a high-ranking Government post, is unaware of what sugar workers earnings look like, we hasten to point out that such information he can probably get by making one call to his colleague, Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder.

Guyana Times featured the PNC’s apparent view on the matter. According to that media entity, the party’s Chairperson, Volda Lawrence, is quoted to say “…all the workers of GuySuCo… they’ve never been left behind…”. It appears the PNC Chairperson did not understand the question as her sentiment is in direct and clear contrast to what the media posed.

The reality is that we are at the threshold of 2020 but sugar workers’ wages are

stuck in 2014. Using, Ms Lawrence’s term, the sugar workers have been left behind and far behind for that matter. The Chairperson went on to say “I’m certain that the Board of Directors would have indicated to all management who have the responsibility to speak with the workers within their domain or under their supervision about the future of GuySuCo and what they’re doing presently and what are the objectives in both short-term and longterm”. It seems that Volda Lawrence has not been keenly following the news, though as a high-ranking State official, she ought to be. Was she in sync with the news, her ‘certainty’ as she put it would have been withheld as a meeting to discuss the industry’s long- and short-term strategies was abandoned when the sugar unions used the opportunity to express strongly and forthrightly the crying plight of the sugar workers.

She would also know that the GAWU has been lamenting in the media for many months that its effort to engage the GuySuCo on its future direction has not seen a reciprocal response from the Corporation. While that is important and the Union is still eagerly anticipating it would meet GuySuCo on its direction, it does not negate that sugar workers need a pay rise now and in the future as well. How does Ms Lawrence and clique expect them and their families to survive when they do not enjoy the cushy benefits as she and her colleagues ensconced in the State receive.

While the statements by the coalition officials are recognised and noted, they must be seen for what they really are. Rather than seeking to right the wrong and to bring justice to the sugar workers, they have found a scapegoat in the GuySuCo Board which they had a hand in appointing. It’s an unconvincing excuse coming from two senior political officials in the Administration.

Do they really expect sugar workers to accept that excuse? If they are then they must really think the workers are idiots.

The Government and the coalition parties should not behave like they are unspoilt. They have had a major hand in the state of the sugar industry. They have ignored their own Commission of Inquiry report to not close estates. They have closed their minds to the real possibilities for the industry’s successful turnaround. They have, without any credible examination, put 7000 workers on the breadline.

They have disregarded the workers right to severance, an injustice corrected after the court’s intervention. They have borrowed billions in the name of the industry without a real plan and have mortgaged the Guyanese people’s assets to secure the loan. So today, to seek to convince that they really had the sugar workers in heart and in mind is simply to add insult to injury.

on his role in quashing 2005 Rodney CoI

Dear Editor, Mrs Patricia Rodney’s recent call for the Government of Guyana to make public the CoI report into Walter Rodney’s death has led to a flurry of letters in the Guyana media, a few from the WPA. One issue that came up in Mrs Rodney London speech concerns events surrounding the Government in 2005 agreeing to have an inquiry into Walter’s death.

Mrs Rodney was in Guyana in 2005 for the 25th anniversary of Walter’s assassination, this is what she said in her London speech “I was in Guyana attending an international conference on Walter, it was agreed that, yes, we would have a Commission of Inquiry; by the time I got back to Atlanta, I don’t know what happened, but it was quashed”.

Mrs Rodney in her usual dignified manner did not point a finger or mention names. But it is public knowledge that Rupert Roopnaraine, a leading WPA member was tasked with developing the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the inquiry. It is well known that the WPA was consistent in its call from 1980 for an inquiry in Walters death.

The burning questing is why did Dr Roopnaraine not carry out this vital task; why was the intended inquiry “quashed”?

Various commentators in Guyana have accused the

WPA of betrayal, suggesting that the inquiry in 2005 was deliberately sabotaged by the WPA. The reason suggested for this “betrayal” of Rodney was the WPA’s desire, at the time, to form an alliance with the PNC. This is a very serious accusation that, to our knowledge, was never seriously dealt with by the WPA. If the WPA is serious in its contention that it remains a Rodneyite party, it needs to properly address this issue.

We also note that Mrs Rodney made some other demands in her London speech, which need to be reinforced: • Walter’s death certificate states that he was unemployed. This should be corrected as he was not unemployed at the time of his assassination.

• The fraudulent inquest in 1988 held by the Hoyte Government concluded that Walter died of misadventure. We know from the 2014 CoI that his death was a State-sponsored killing.

This too should be corrected.

• The conviction of Donald Rodney, which still stands, should be removed.

• There should be compensation for Rodney’s immediate family, including Donald Rodney.

here’s a lot of talk these days about fit kids. People who care (parents, doctors, teachers, and others) want to know how to help kids be more fit.

Being fit is a way of saying a person eats well, gets a lot of physical activity (exercise), and has a healthy weight. If you’re fit, your body works well, feels good, and can do all the things you want to do, like run around with your friends.

Some parts of this are up to parents – such as serving healthy meals or deciding to take the family on a nature hike. But kids can take charge too when it comes to their health.

Here are five rules to live by, if you’re a kid who wants to be fit. The trick is to follow these rules most of the time, knowing that some days (like your birthday) might call for cake and ice cream.

Eat a variety of foods You may have a favourite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety. If you eat different foods, you’re more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. Taste new foods and old ones you haven’t tried for a while. Some foods, such as green veggies, may taste better the older you get. Shoot for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day — two fruits and three vegetables.

When you’re really thirsty, cold water is the best thirstquencher. And there’s a reason your school cafeteria offers cartons of milk.

Kids need calcium to build strong b o n e s , and milk is a great source of this mineral.

How much do kids need?

If you are 4 to 8 years old, drink 2½ cups of milk a day, or

Foundation its equivalent. If you’re 9 or older, aim for 3 cups of milk per day, or its equivalent.

You can mix it up by having milk and some other calcium-rich dairy foods. Here’s one combination: 2 cups (about half a litre) of low-fat or non-fat milk 1 slice cheddar cheese ½ cup (small container) of yogurt If you want something other than milk or water once in a while, it’s OK to have 100 per cent juice. But try to limit juice to no more than one serving (six to eight ounces) a day. Avoid sugary drinks, like sodas, juice cocktails, and fruit punches.

They contain a lot of added sugar. Sugar just adds calories, not important nutrients.

Listen to your body What does it feel like to be full? When you’re eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too much because they don’t notice when they need to stop eating. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable and can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games (console systems or handheld games), and using a smart phone, tablet, or computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time you have for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding, and swimming. Try to spend no more than two hours a day on screen time, not counting computer use related to school and educational activities.

Be active One job you have as a kid — and it’s a fun one — is that you get to figure out which activities you like best. Not everyone loves baseball or soccer. Maybe your passion is karate, or kickball, or dancing. Ask your parents to help you do your favourite activities regularly. Find ways to be active every day. You might even write down a list of fun stuff to do, so you can use it when your mom or dad says it’s time to stop watching TV or playing computer games!

Speaking of parents, they can be a big help if you want to be a fit kid. For instance, they can stock the house with healthy foods and plan physical activities for the family. Tell your parents about these five steps you want to take and maybe you can teach them a thing or two. If you’re a fit kid, why shouldn’t you have a fit mom and a fit dad? (kidshealth.org)

5 study tips can help you take tests with confidence Continued from Monday

Resist the urge to procrastinate It’s tempting to put off studying until the last minute (also known as procrastination). Unfortunately, by the time students get to high school there’s so much going on that there’s usually no room for procrastination.

If you’re a procrastinator (and who isn’t sometimes?), one of the best ways to overcome it is by staying organised. After you’ve written test dates and project due dates on a calendar, it’s hard to ignore them. And sitting down to organise and plan your work really highlights how much time things take. Organisation makes it harder to procrastinate.

Sometimes people put off studying because they feel overwhelmed by the fact that they’re behind on things or they just feel really disorganised. Don’t let this happen to you. Keep your notes organised, stay on top of required readings, and follow the other study tips mentioned earlier to stay focused and in control. Your teachers will give you plenty of notice on important tests so you have enough time to study for the type of exam you’ll be taking.

But what if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff you have to do? Are classes or extracurricular activities limiting your time to study properly? Ask your teachers for help prioritising. You may need to involve the people in charge of your activities – such as your coach or music or drama teacher – in working out a solution.

Don’t wait until the last minute to talk to your teachers, though, or you’ll just look like a procrastinator!

And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Teachers respect students who are thoughtful and interested in learning and doing well.

Start a study group Sometimes it can be useful to go over things with people who are studying for the same test: You can make sure that your notes are correct and that you understand the subject. Study groups are also helpful, because you can work together to come up with ways to remember concepts and then test one another.

For some people who are easily distracted, though, study groups spell disaster because they get off the topic.

APNU holds internal meeting, blanks one scheduled with AFC ...decides to negotiate with AFC “in accordance with Constitution”

espite the Alliance For Change (AFC) proclaiming last week that it would meet with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Monday, the larger party instead met with Chairman and President David Granger, where it took certain decisions on how to approach negotiations with AFC. In a statement to the media, APNU revealed that a meeting was held with all the parties that make up the Partnership; the Guyana Action Party (GAP), the Justice For All Party (JFAP), the National Front Alliance (NFA), the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA).

Could this be the straw that breaks the coalition’s alliance?

he State Assets Recovery Agency (SARA) has lost another bout against the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), with the High Court throwing out its claim seeking over $200 million from the bank in a case pertaining to the acquisition of land.

The legal proceedings were filed back in August by SARA, which sought $274.1 million plus interest from GBTI for the bank’s acquisition of land at High and Young Streets, Kingston, where its headquarters now stand.

In the claim, SARA alleged that when the bank bid for and acquired the right to purchase this land which now holds the bank’s headquarters, it was the fourth-highest of 14 bids. It further claimed that GBTI’s purchase price of $224 million is less than the most recent valuation of the property at the time.

However, the court ruled in favour of the bank on the grounds that SARA did not present a well-grounded cause of action together with the fact that the Agency was not the properly constituted legal entity to bring the case.

The court ruled that since the case was not brought by a Managing Director or Deputy Director, as set out in the State Assets Recovery Act 2017 that formed SARA, the proceedings filed in the statement of claims were

rendered void.

According to the court, such claims can only be brought by either of the aforementioned people. In an interview with this publication, one of GBTI’s lawyers, explained that since the process to appoint the SARA Director was flawed, its locus standi was also flawed.

“The legislation itself said that court proceedings will be brought by the Director and the Act provided that the Director shall be a corporation sole, meaning the Director has corporate authority. The case was not brought by the Director; it was brought by SARA itself.”

“Now the Act also provided that the Director had to be appointed in a certain way, that is he has to be appointed by a decision of the National Assembly. And the person who was appointed must be someone recommended by the appointments committee of the National Assembly.”

The lawyer explained that SARA Director, Dr Clive Thomas was neither appointed by the National Assembly nor recommended by the appointments committee. According to the attorney, Thomas’ appointment was thus unlawful.

“Not being a lawful appointment, he was not a corporation sole. But in any case, he did not bring the proceedings. The SARA agency brought the proceedings. So on that basis, the

court dismissed the case,” he said.

In light of this, SARA was ordered to pay costs to the bank in the tune of $200,000.

It is understood that SARA was represented by Attorney Ronald Bostwick. Efforts to contact Dr Thomas were futile. The matter was heard before Justice Franklin Holder.

Section 106 (2) of the SARA Act states that “within a period of not more than four months from the date of commencement of this Act, the Parliamentary Committee on appointments on the notification by the Minister shall recommend to the National Assembly a person to be appointed as Director of the SARA.” When the SARA bill of 2017 was passed, Dr Thomas was at the time the Head of the State Assets Recovery Unit (SARU). The agency was renamed but despite the bill setting out the process for appointing a Director, Thomas was kept on as the Director of SARA. This is not the first case brought by SARA against GBTI. It was only in March of this year that contempt of court charges brought by SOCU against eight top executives of GBTI were thrown out by the Magistrates’ Courts.

That matter stemmed from October 2017, when SOCU charged the bank’s Directors with contempt based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The contempt proceedings stemmed from the bank’s failure to comply with a production order made by acting Chief Justice Roxane George on August 29, 2017.

GBTI had contended in its application for the variation of the order granted by Justice George that countless efforts were made to gather all the documents requested but it was discovered that some were either destroyed or could not be found. The documents were pertinent to

Last week, AFC had made known that if final talks with APNU fail, then the minority party in the governing coalition will be moving ahead with its March 2020 elections campaign on its own.

The two parties are currently revising the Cummingsburg Accord – the deal they signed to contest the 2015 General and Regional Elections, which they eventually won. After weeks of contentious negotiations, the APNU and AFC were expected to wrap up these discussions at a final meeting between the leaders on Monday.

“In the light of the tremendous progress made in completing the revised Cummingsburg Accord and the significant impact that the Accord is likely to have on the outcome of the upcoming General and Regional Elections, the AFC has agreed to a final meeting with APNU on Monday November 18, 2019, at which a single outstanding matter is to be resolved… and that has to do with a formula for the allocation of parliamentary positions, ministerial positions and RDC seats,” AFC executive Dominic Gaskin had stated.

The 2015 Accord had catered for the APNU to get 60 per cent while the AFC gets 40 per cent of the allotments in the three categories. Currently, the AFC has the Ministries of Agriculture, Business (and Tourism), Natural Resources, Public

Infrastructure, and Public Telecommunication, as well as the Prime Ministerial post.

Whatever formula is agreed upon by the two leaders will determine the divisional proportion of the three categories for next year’s polls. However, Gaskin had expressed a belief that the coalition should keep the “winning formula” used for the 2015 elections.

“We think that that was a winning formula and we want to maintain that formula. Now having said that, this is a negotiation and we are not going into the room, saying ‘this is what we want’ and there is no discussion…

We have not said that this particular formula is non-negotiable but as in any negotiation, once something is on the table, were we to deviate from that formula, the question would arise on what are we getting in return or what are we giving in return.

That’s how negotiations are normally conducted.”

“So we are always flexible [and] we’ve been negotiating in good faith, looking for an outcome that is acceptable to both parties…and we have a fair idea of what is fair to the AFC,” the party Executive stated.

But even as the AFC was confident that Monday’s meeting would have been fruitful, the party had declared that it will be moving ahead without its coalition partner if those final talks were further delayed or failed.

Teen slapped with malicious wounding charge

ighteen-year-old Denzil Chance appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday and pleaded not guilty to a malicious wounding charge.

The charge alleged that on November 12, 2019 at Quart Stone, Cuyuni River, Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni) with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Trevon Semple.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, the two men are known to each other. The

defendant was reportedly contacted by the Virtual Complainant (VC) to build a shop.

The court heard that the defendant agreed to receive payment after completion of the job; however, when Chance contacted the VC to collect his payment, a heated argument ensued between the two.

The two men subsequently engaged in a scuffle during which the VC received a stab wound.

The Prosecutor did not object to bail being granted; however, he asked that bail be granted in a substan-

tial amount. He highlighted that the VC was hospitalised and released from the hospital moments prior to the court case being called.

The Chief Magistrate, after listening to the facts, released the defendant on $70,000 bail and his next court appearance was scheduled for November 29, 2019 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Courts.

Chance was also instructed to stay 50 feet away from the VC and ordered to report to the Bartica Police Station every Friday until the determination of the trial.

Taxi driver to face jury for raping 12-year-old girl

eville Thomas, a taxi driver attached to a popular Georgetown taxi service, was on Monday committed to stand trial at the Demerara High Court after a prima facie case was made out against him for the

rape of a 12-year-old girl.

Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, who conducted the Preliminary Inquiry (PI), ruled that after perusing the entirety of the evidence, she was satisfied that substantial evi-

dence was presented against Thomas for the offence he was charged with.

As such, she informed him that he would face a Judge and jury at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

Thomas, of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to the charge which read that between April 1 and 30, 2019, at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), he engaged in sexual penetration with a 12-year-old child.

Based on information, the 32-year-old was hired to transport the victim to and from school.

It was reported that on the day in question, Thomas picked up the child from school and took her to a hotel in Diamond, where he had sexual intercourse with her.

The child complained to her parents, who made a report to the Police Station.

According to their analysis, which came out of their records, 151 of those persons had been murdered by bandits; 239 were killed during confrontations with Police and in unexplained circumstances, while 30 were security officers who lost their lives.

These figures obviously didn’t include the garden variety murders which hover around 100 annually, since the total number of murders during those years was 898.

SN promised to continue with the figures up to 2008, when the last of the gang members had been finished off by the Police.

The “just the facts” approach might put a spoke in the wheels of the PNC’s decade-long propaganda onslaught that accused the PPP of killing “400 black youths”. The “dossier” they compiled actually had 449 names allegedly killed between 1993 and 2009.

It’s been pointed out without any effect that the PNC had included the names of many of the innocents who’d been killed by the bandits. And these certainly weren’t “Blacks”, but Indians like Ramdeo and Sita Persaud, who were gunned down as they relaxed in their hammocks under their house in Annandale, next door to the bandits’ hideout in Buxton. While the Police killed were mostly “Blacks”, they were all killed by the bandits!!

It really doesn’t give a flavour of the times, does it?

The Canadian Immigration Service has a piece on the Web: “Calling themselves the Five for Freedom, the convicts stated that their mission was to defend the rights of the Afro-Guyanese, and since their breakout, the group has been linked to a number of crimes, including the murder of at least a dozen mainly Indo-Guyanese civilians, the assassination of several top police officials and a machine-gun attack on a police station.”

They quoted an analysis of GIHA, which showed another racialised selectivity of the bandits between 2002-2003: “Of 460 incidents of robberies, assaults, and kidnappings, 330 were directed at Indians, Indian businesses and Indian families. 31 Indians were killed by Black bandits. Twelve people were kidnapped, all Indians,

by Black bandits. Two of the kidnapped were killed.” Yes, it was a time of horror for this country.

By starting in 2002, the report missed the PNC actions that led to the carnage. While protesting the results of the Dec 1997 election in Georgetown, hundreds of Indians were beaten by roving mobs on Jan 12, 1998. This outrage segued into arson; blocking of roads at Buxton; killings of a father and son behind Buxton; kidnappings, and other murders.

So Jaipaul Sharma - representing his father, CN Sharma of the “Justice For All Party”, in the APNU coalition - insists he’s “prepared to give up (his) position as a possible MP and Minister of Government after the 2020 Elections in the interest of all Guyanese.”

Awwww! Isn’t that noble?? Or is it??

The way your Eyewitness heard it, the PNC types (who call the shots in the coalition) suspect that Sharma was about to say, “Yes! Yes! Yes!!” on that fateful night of Dec 21, 2018 in the hallowed halls of the National Assembly. Charrandas just beat him to it!! Whether it’s actually so or not isn’t the point. Perception IS reality, and the perception that he’s a fifth columnist inside the Trojan Horse (to mix a metaphor!) has already made the PNC decide that there ain’t no place for the son of CNS. His effort to save face should be emulated by Ramjattan, since even if he gets the PM’s nod, it’ll be a poisoned chalice!! …without comment Isn’t someone going to parse the 600-odd murders that took place during the PNC’s watch of 2015-2019 to determine what sort of youths have been killed??

Venezuelan stabbed to death WBD woman held at gunpoint, during attempted robbery in Grove robbed during home invasion

A

Venezuelan national who was loitering along the Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) roadway was knifed to death during an attempted robbery in the wee hours of Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Woillian Fores, who was unemployed and had been residing at a house in Post Office Street, Grove.

According to eyewitnesses, around 01:05h on the morning in question, Fores was sitting on the Western side of the abovementioned public road, when two men riding pedal cycles approached him.

The onlookers were not aware that an attempted robbery was about to occur and assumed that the duo on bicycles was passing Fores to get to their destination.

But the two men quickly stopped and from a distance, the eyewitnesses assumed that they knew each other.

However, it was not until a scuffle ensued between Fores and one of the men that persons became aware that the now dead man had been defending himself.

According to the police, the suspect that had been fighting with Fores was

armed with a knife and demanded that the young man hand over his valuables.

Fores reportedly put up a fight during which the armed suspect dealt him two stabs to the body. Upon realising what was happening, one concerned resident contacted the police.

The injured man fell onto the road as onlookers who rushed to render assistance raised an alarm.

This resulted in the mur-

der suspect and his accomplice jumping back onto their bicycles and fleeing the scene.

GuyanaTimes understands that police officers arrived promptly at the scene, and with the help of residents in Grove, managed to transport the injured Fores to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police are now on the hunt for the two suspects as they continue their investigations.

When contacted, Region Four (DemeraraMahaica) Sub-Division B (East Bank Demerara) Police Commander, Senior Superintendent Kurleigh Simon stated that his ranks are in pursuit of the two suspects.

He explained that through intense probes, his investigators were able to determine the identity of one of the men, and that up to press time they were combing the village for him.

According to Commander Simon, he is certain that ranks will be able to nab that suspect, however, if he is not apprehended within the next 24 hours, a wanted bulletin will be issued for his arrest.

andits on Sunday broke into a Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) home and terrorised the owner before making good their escape with cash and other items.

Based on information received, the incident occurred around 17:00h in the Parfaite Harmonie Housing Scheme.

The homeowners, Kamla Luckoo told Guyana Times that she had just returned home from work and upon entering her home, she was confronted by the two armed men.

As one of them searched the two-storey building for valuables, the other held her at knifepoint. The woman indicated that she could not see their faces which were covered by a bandana and hoodie.

“Just as I turn the key and come in, they come right up to the door and tell me to shut up. One come up and said he would kill me and had the knife to my neck, and then the other one go

upstairs and start tumbling through the wardrobe …The one next to me was asking how far I keep the money and jewellery and I tell he where to go. After that, they run out through the door and I think it had a car pull up and they drive away,” she recalled.

Luckoo said that she then looked around and many items in the house were broken. It is believed that the duo gained entry from a window in the lower flat, which was later discovered ajar.

“There’s a window in the kitchen that when I go in, I see it open. This one did

had grille ‘cause I not too long move in…When I look around, they break up a vase and some other things, empty out the clothes and so from upstairs; all the fan was on the ground,” she related.

At that time, a report was not yet filed with the Police.

Luckoo indicated that she called the Police, but they were yet to dispatch ranks to the scene. The men managed to escape with a small quantity of silver and gold jewellery, one haversack, a laptop, and $19,000 in cash.

The Police are investigating the robbery. No arrests have been made.

Businesses warned against hiring ‘criminally- JHI, AmCham to host public lecture on first oil minded’ individuals – acting Crime Chief

rime Chief (ag) Michael Kingston has called on businesses to take the necessary precautions to ensure they do not hire criminal-minded individuals.

This was echoed by Crime Chief (ag) Michael Kingston, who contended that financial crimes, including robberies, would be less if employers take necessary steps to protect their businesses from being infiltrated by criminal-minded individuals.

“Most of the serious crimes that occur within Georgetown, I have observed through our crime analysis, it is inside work being done. Persons from the inside that is giving information out and this kind of thing is happening. Our investigations have proven that so far.”

al method of authorities in the corporate field is to have potential or prospective employees obtain a police clearance from the GPF, this does not assure that the person(s) hired are of sound character.

Kingston explained that employers should practice

more caution and screening when hiring any staff since a valid police clearance does not safeguard against employing persons involved in criminal activities.

“Not because a person would have produced a police clearance means he is that safe, we only issue police clearance where convictions, a person could be charged, but then if the person was not convicted, then we cannot put on that certificate of character that the person was charged. We could only put that they were convicted. And therefore, within the business community, a more serious approach needs to be taken when they are going to be employing persons.”

However, Kingston added that too many businesses are conducting large cash transactions without proper security measures in place

and the increase of persons travelling with huge sums of monies in the city are posing challenges for the police to prevent crimes.

He explained that the lack of investment in proper security at premises where persons are involved in carting cash in large sums for transactions to and from the bank makes the work of the GPF ranks harder as they are tasked with ensuring that crimes are prevented.

“They are failing to hire competent security personnel and services to ensure that that is being done and that is a challenge. We also find too many large cash transactions. Persons are driving around on a daily basis with two, three, four million dollars to have their transactions being done when they can be easily done by way of a cheque or by way of a card, a debit card or so.”

Ex-GDF rank gets life sentence for murdering uncle

fter being found guilty for the brutal murder of his uncle back in 2017, 29-yearold Dwayne Tappin was on Monday handed a life sentence when he made his final appearance for the presentation of his probation report.

The murder convict had initially pleaded not guilty to the capital offence of murder when his trial commenced last month.

However, a 12-mem-

ber jury unanimously found him guilty of the indictment on October 18, 2019, which had stated that on August 6, 2017, in the county of Demerara, he murdered 51-year-old Randolph Seenauth, his uncle.

Tappin a former member of the Guyana Defence Force, was handed the sentence by Justice Sandil Kissoon, who ordered that he serve 40 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole.

According to previous media reports, Seenauth’s head was found lying between the living room and

kitchen. His body was later discovered in the bedroom.

The gruesome discovery was made after Police were summoned to the scene by neighbours who heard a loud commotion in the man’s home which he shared with his nephew.

The accused, however, turned himself in a few hours later. He was charged and remanded to prison.

Following a Preliminary Inquiry (PI), the prosecution presented sufficient evidence against him to stand trial in the High Court for the murder.

He will discuss the basics of oil and gas formation, how to make and read topographical maps from sub-sea seismic data, and how to identify potential oil fields on that seismic data.

Other presenters from JHI will explain their roles within the organisation, including legal, finance, and investor relations, demonstrating the need for a variety of disciplines within the oil industry.

Man gets 17 years for killing brother during argument in 2016

man who fatally stabbed his brother during an argument back in 2016 on Monday confessed to the unlawful killing when he made his first appearance at the Demerara High Court before Justice Sandil Kissoon.

Represented by Attorney Robindra Mohabir, 35-yearold Orin Jules opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. The charge read that on June 18, 2016 in the county of Demerara, he killed Dexter Jules, 23, of Lot 634 D Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

According to reports, on the day in question, the younger Jules was involved in a heated argument with his brother.

In the midst of same, the now convicted killer armed himself with a knife and stabbed his sibling several times about his body. The incident reportedly occurred at a shop Dexter operated in Sophia.

Decapitated body of Brazilian found in Lethem…

Cops yet to locate the severed head of slain man

– Brazilian authorities aiding local Police, hunting for teen murder suspect

olice are yet to locate the head of 22-yearold Dico Davi Roberto Moreira, whose headless body was discovered along the Tabatinga road, Lethem, Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) on Sunday morning.

Moreira, a labourer who hailed from Bon Fim, Brazil, was decapitated between 19:00h on Saturday

and 07:15h on Sunday.

This is according to Regional Police Commander of that Division, Superintendent Keithon King, who told Guyana Times on Monday that ranks are still combing the area with the hope finding the now dead man’s head.

He stated that local law enforcement officials have intensified the hunt for

the slain man’s 17-year-old cousin, who has been on the run since Moreira’s body was discovered.

According to King, the Brazilian lawmen were contacted and briefed on the incident from the moment that the gruesome discovery was made on Sunday, since it is believed that the teenage suspect might have fled to Brazil to evade arrest.

1 dead, 1 hospitalised following head-on collision

ne cyclist is dead while another was admitted a patient at the Lethem Hospital following a head-on collision on Saturday evening at South Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

Dead is 31-year-old Ben Aguilar of Rupunau Village, South Central Rupununi, while the injured man has been identified as 25-yearold Baldwin Wilson, also of South Rupununi.

Based on reports received, at about 14:30h on the day in question at Rupunau Church yard, South Central Rupununi, Wilson and Aguilar were riding separate motorcycles at a fast rate of speed when

they collided head-on.

As a result of the collision, both riders fell onto the ground and sustained injuries about their bodies.

Wilson was picked up and taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where he was examined by a doctor on duty and admitted a patient in the male ward.

Aguilar, on the other hand, who was presumed dead by family members, was taken home to be bur-

The body was, nevertheless, exhumed and transported to the Lethem Regional Hospital where he was officially pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.

The police are continuing their investigations.

Police hunt man who discharged firearm in bar

olice are on the hunt for a man who reportedly discharged a round while partying in a bar at Puruni Landing, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), on Sunday evening.

Based on information gathered, a loud explosion was heard, causing the music to stop and the patrons to leave the bar.

It was at this time that a security officer confronted a male at a shop opposite to where the incident took place. A .32 Taurus Revolver, three live rounds of ammunition and two spent shells were recovered from him.

The suspect, however, managed to escape. The gun and the ammunition were handed over to the police as they continue their investigations.

On Sunday morning, the headless body of Moreira was seen lying on the road, clad in long black pants and

a blue jersey.

Local cops were immediately summoned to the crime scene and upon examination, they noticed multiple stab wounds to the now dead man’s upper back and both of Moreira’s wrists were partly severed.

A tattoo with a cannabis leaf was seen on the left hand the body and shortly after, Moreira’s sister, Joy Roberto, identified the headless corpse to be that of her brother’s.

The body is presently at the Lethem Hospital where it had been pronounced dead on arrival on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination (PME) will be conducted shortly.

According to the police, the slain man’s cousin was identified as a person of interest in this case, since he had a negative history with Moreira which eventually led to the teenager recently openly threatening to murder him.

The cousins’ feud is said to have commenced when the youth allegedly had sexual relations with a female

company of Moreira’s. Since those allegations and accusations surfaced, the now dead man and his younger cousin (suspect) had continuous problems.

Just last Monday, the suspect visited the home of Moreira where he stole a bicycle belonging to his aunt (Moreira’s mother) and sold it in the Lethem village.

Moreira eventually learnt what his younger cousin had done and managed to locate the person who purchased the bicycle from the young man. He then retrieved the bicycle and returned it to his mother.

Two days later, the suspect is reported to have visited the Moreira residence once more, but this time accompanied by several males. He then told his aunt that they were there to kill her son.

However, when the teenage suspect learnt that Moreira was not at home at that time, he reportedly told his aunt (Moreira’s mother) that he would kill his 22-year-old cousin.

Lack of public cooperation affecting work of GPF P ersons settling matters outside of the courtroom coupled with the failure and/or reluctance of the public to aid the police in securing CCTV footage of crimes are two major challenges that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is presently grappling with.

According to Acting Crime Chief, Senior Superintendent Michael Kingston, such challenges, which are outside of the Force’s control, are causing hindrances to the duties that law enforcement officials are tasked with executing.

At a police press conference held last week, he ex-

plained that there are multiple contributing factors that result in criminals or persons with criminal intent remaining on the streets and that while local cops are willing to nab the perpetrators, there is a need for greater collaboration with the public.

Kingston noted that there are many cases where robbery victims have resorted to settling those matters outside of a courtroom, resulting in the guilty parties being able to walk the streets freely and possibly committing more crimes.

He emphasised that this, coupled with challenges in securing CCTV footage

when crimes occur, has major negative effects on the police’s work on a frequent

basis.

“Then there are challenges where there are very poor CCTV footage. When you go, when a robbery would have occurred and when you go to some places and you are told that the system is not working and then even if it is working the cameras are not being placed in the strategic area. Then we prefer to have more cooperation with persons that have CCTV footage at their facilities.

We are not getting these footages from the persons in a timely manner and, therefore, it is hindering progress.”

The Crime Chief (ag) further stated that even when

evidence is obtained and matters are forwarded to the courts for justice to be served, some witnesses fail to cooperate and that this is another thorn in the side for investigators.

“And then we have issues where witnesses are failing to attend court. While I agree at times, some of them are not being warned adequately to attend court some are definitely not going to court at all. Even when they are being warned.”

However, Kingston did not shy away from the fact that internal problems in the GPF also contribute significantly towards the lack of progress in the crime pre-

vention area. He acknowledged that the police, too, need to make necessary changes in various areas and added that work is ongoing to correct internal flaws.

“We do have challenges…proper monitoring of patrols, roadblocks, cordon and search exercise.

In the area of communication, there is not adequate communication and feedback between investigators, members of the public. We have been enhancing our protective gears aspect and that is what we are doing at the moment [but] corruption continues to plague us as well as recidivism.”

ExxonMobil holds workshop with UG students

xxonMobil Guyana recently hosted a two-day workshop on South America Basin Analysis and Hydrocarbon Systems with geology students at the University of Guyana, for a third time.

Led by Global Geoscience Recruiting Advisor Orla McLaughlin, the team also included Guyanese geoscientist Ashlika Persaud.

McLaughlin stated that

this was the usual practice of ExxonMobil wherever it operated around the world.

“This is something I’ve done in the UK, Australia and now that we are building an office in Guyana, we are trying to teach the students here about the type of work we do and to try and get them interested in the kind of work they might want to do when they graduate,” she explained.

During the two days, the second-year geology students were exposed to hydrocarbon systems, Sequence Stratigraphy and Paleogeography of South America among other topics.

And for the Guyanese geoscientist, it was a great experience. “This is one of the things I’ve wanted to do when I pursued a career in geology and started work-

“I was a bit nervous with the practical because it is something new we are doing, but I came with the expectation of learning and

being informed about oil and how everything works,” Rianna Cobis stated.

Her colleague, Keith Da Silva indicated that the workshop was a good initiative since Guyana was new to oil and as such, educating persons would be beneficial in time to come.

Girls in Tech to host forum to tackle “exam anxiety”

irls in Tech (GIT), a global non-profit with a Guyana chapter will host its a mentor/ mentee engagement to encourage tertiary level women to be confident and overcome fears they may have, especially in the upcoming examination season.

The event is the second one to be hosted since their launch in August 2019 and will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at the University of Guyana, Education Lecture Theatre from 13:00h.

The Girls in Tech Mentorship Programme focuses on the education and empowerment of women in technology and entrepreneurship. Offered for university, tertiary and profes-

sional women, the goal of the programme is to identify and solve the obstacles keeping mentees from achieving their professional goals. As a result, the programme is customised to each participant and her goals.

One such obstacle has been identified as examination anxiety, where some girls and women become extremely nervous and may even suffer panic attacks before, during and after an examination. The heightened level of stress and pressure to perform usually takes a toll both mentally and physically.

2 hospitalised after ATV topples in Mahdia

wo women were admitted to the Mahdia Hospital after the AllTerrain Vehicle (ATV) on which they were travelling turned turtle as the driver was attempting to evade Police ranks on Monday.

The injured persons are Tracey George, 18, and Tellisha George, 21, of Campbelltown Mahdia, Region Eight (PotaroSiparuni).

The driver, Cleoton John, 21, of Karasabai Village, South Pakaraima, was arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that at about 02:15h on Monday morning along the 111 Miles Road, Mahdia, the ATV, bearing registration number CF 5370, was proceeding north when the driver observed a police vehicle travelling in the said direction behind him.

As a result, John started to drive faster to evade the police and in doing so, he lost control of the vehicle causing the two pillion riders to fall onto the roadway. The women were picked up by Police and taken to Mahdia Public Hospital where they were examined by a doctor.

er, was admitted and is being treated for a broken left leg while Tracey George suffered abrasions about her body. Their conditions are regarded as stable.

egion 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Education Officer LaShanna Anderson stated that schools in the region are grasping the new educational programmes which are being implemented.

Anderson, who also has responsibility for SubRegion Two (areas along the Berbice River) recently spoke on the region’s performance at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) as she gave a report on the region’s performance as it relates to the nationwide curriculum reform and implementation programme.

She outlined that Government has secured a loan from the World Bank to embark on the curriculum reform initiative while add-

ing that with the increase in education funding, much has been achieved.

She pointed to initiatives such as the Guyana Early Childhood Education Project (GECEP) which had been successful and now the Guyana Education Sector Improvement Project (GESIP) programme that caters for curriculum reform which is currently being implemented from Grades One to Nine.

The schools in Region 10 which are currently piloting this new curriculum initiative are One Mile Primary, St Aidan’s, Mackenzie Primary, Coomacka Primary, Amelia’s Ward, Howell Wilson, Calcuni, Sand Hills, Saint Lust and Kimbia Primary schools.

“The feedback is very encouraging. At the nursery level...we recognised

that the children learn different. And so, through funding we were able to have those hands-on materials for them to manipulate. And so all of our nursery schools and classes were given a nursery kit with lots of manipulative materials... it helped teachers in terms of lesson delivery and delivering concepts to children.

It also helped them so that they don’t have to find materials themselves because these kits were all-inclusive”, Anderson told members of the Council.

In focusing on literacy, she noted that Government, through the Education Ministry, placed a lot of focus on development in this regard. As part of the programme, she pointed out

that literacy kits were given to all schools within the region. The results, Anderson explained, has been commendable.

“We are indeed happy. In terms of the curriculum reform and renewal, we have this curriculum - it is more hands-on, it is more child-centred. It is one that takes the teacher away from being the centre and being more of a facilitator. To encourage children to think critically and to be active learners”, she said.

So far, this has been rolled out in Grades One and Two and will be extended to Grade Nine by next year, according to Anderson.

As it relates to the secondary level, she explained that focus has been placed

on technical and vocational studies, which she stressed is very important. This is undertaken more so at the Sixth Form level. Overall, Anderson stressed the importance of partnerships in moving education forward as she encouraged all administrators to work collaboratively to continue to achieve positive results.

The education official boasted that results from the Christianburg Wismar Secondary School have been very encouraging as the school is set to be assessed to become officially gazetted for its recently attained Sixth Form. Anderson said based on progress thus far, the region’s Department of Education remains optimistic.

11-year-old struck down Cane Grove main road in deplorable condition while on pedestrian crossing …as construction works prolonged for 3 months

n 11-year-old girl was up to late Monday evening receiving medical attention for injuries she sustained after being struck by a speeding car at Grove, East Bank Demerara.

Information reaching Guyana Times revealed that the child, along with others, were crossing the road, using the pedestrian crossing, when she was struck by the motorcar. The car was at the

time overtaking on the heavy yellow double lines.

As a result of the impact, the child was reportedly flung a short distance away. She sustained injuries and was picked up and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where she was treated.

The driver of the motorcar remains in Police custody assisting with investigations.

he yearend rainy reason has mounted worries on residents of Cane Grove on the outskirts of Region Four (DemeraraMahaica), who have complained bitterly about the dreary state of their access road.

While Guyana’s primary thoroughfares along the coast have been upgraded, other connecting streets and access roads have been in a dreadful condition. Back in July, Government had announced that some $103 million would be spent to upgrade the said road from loam to asphalt. However, huge potholes and sand currently cover the stretch of road.

An affected resident, Jairam Bhagwan, contacted

this publication on Monday, relating that persons within his community are dissatisfied with the state of the road. Known widely for its agricultural activities, heavy equipment is finding it difficult to traverse.

“They sent workers to fix this road here since months now and nothing is being done. They just sitting here and doing nothing and the road is still in bad shape. No asphalt or nothing like that.

In fact, it is worse than it was couple months back because the rain now falling. I don’t know what will happen to people in here,” he added.

According to Bhagwan, they have written the Public Infrastructure Ministry about the slothful implementation of the project. So far, there has not been any response.

“I personally wrote the Minister to tell him about the situation here about five weeks now. Not even a response. Big holes forming now and we are helpless now.”

The asphalt road project is part of the $38.5 billion budgetary allocation approved for 2019, under the Ministry. There was high drama in the National Assembly during the passage in 2018, when the Government was questioned about various projects and expenditures under the Public Infrastructure Ministry, which has been allocated this money for 2019.

Watchman found dead on water dragger

T

he motionless body of 61-year-old Valdir Demetrio, of Boa Vista, Brazil, was discovered on a water dragger by one of his colleagues who went to take foodstuff for him.

He was reportedly found in the hallway of the drag-

ger on his back.

The police were contacted and promptly visited the scene where they commenced their investigations. There were no marks of violence about his body and several bottles of medication were found among his belongings.

Based on reports gathered, the now dead man suffered multiple medical complications. He was reportedly the only person on the dragger.

His body was taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital awaiting a post-mortem.

t a simple ceremony on October 30 last, Dr Keith Cummings presented a valuable donation of books and periodicals to the University of Guyana’s Library.

Dr Cummings, an attending physician at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, a full-service community teaching hospital affiliat-

ed with the Icahn School of Medicine in New York City, donated the items worth in excess of $4 million.

This multidisciplinary collection of print resources covered areas inclusive of medicine, biology, and social sciences.

The donation was proudly accepted by Dr Emanuel Cummings, Dean, Faculty of

Health Sciences, on behalf of the University.

He expressed gratitude to the donor and his collaborators Dr Stephen Carryl, Dr Ali Hassoun, Dr Dwain Woode, Dr Dhanna Etwaru, Dr Phillip McPherson, Dr Sherly Abraham, and Dr Leon Lewis, for their continued kindness and commitment to the University.

Dr Keith Cummings is a Berbician and a graduate of the University of Guyana’s School of Medicine (Class of 2003). He completed his teaching fellowship in neuroscience at St George’s University’s School of Medicine and his residency in family medicine at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, NY, followed by a hospital medicine fellowship at the University of Alabama.

He frequently returns to Guyana, and has provided medical education sessions on a variety of topics in Linden, Georgetown and Berbice over the past four years. Over the years, he has also done a lot of philanthropic work with several churches in Berbice and at his former primary and secondary schools.

Since 2016, he has been giving back to the University of Guyana through donations of medical books and

His excellent medical care and community work with the under-served population in east New York has led to him being honoured with a USA Congressional Recognition in 2018.

eavy winds stirred dozens of fires across Australia’s east coast today, blanketing Sydney in hazardous smoke and prompting health warnings for the country’s most populous city.

Wildfires have destroyed about 2.5 million acres (1 million hectares) of farmland and bush over the past couple of weeks, fueled by tinder-dry con-

ditions after three years of drought that experts say has been exacerbated by climate change.

Strong winds fanned around 60 fires still ablaze across New South Wales (NSW) state and officials said smoke that stretched across Sydney was measured at 10 times above hazardous levels in some parts of the city.

said the smoke would linger for most of today as strong winds exacerbated the threat of more fires across Australia’s east coast.

The state’s health department said people should stay inside as much as possible.

“For most people, smoke causes mild symptoms like sore eyes, nose and throat. However, people with conditions like asthma, emphysema and angina are more likely to be sensitive to the health effects of smoke,” said Dr Richard Broom, Director of Environmental Health at NSW Health.

Australia’s bushfires are a common and deadly threat but the early outbreak of fires in the southern spring this year has already claimed at least four lives and destroyed more than 300 homes over the past week.

Victory for Brazil tribe as hotel group cancels plans for luxury resort

Brazilian tribe that has been fighting for 15 years to preserve land they use to gather food won a victory on Monday when public pressure made Portuguese hotel group Vila Gale cancel plans to build a 500-room luxury resort on the Bahia coast.

Indigenous group Tupinambá de Olivença, numbering 4631 people, has been fighting for the land to be designated as a reserve since 2003. Brazil’s Indigenous rights agency Funai approved the request in 2009, and Brazil’s second-highest court unanimously voted in favour of the Tupinambá in 2016.

But the tribe still requires final sign-off from the Ministry of Justice and the president himself for

Under Brazil’s 1988 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of Indigenous people to their ancestral lands, and a presidential decree in 1996, any building on land where the boundaries have already been drawn by the Funai faces confiscation with no compensation.

A Soyuz rocket launch at Vostochny cosmodrome (5 Jul 19)

ussia’s new Vostochny space centre has lost at least 11 billion roubles (£133 million; US$172 million) through theft and top officials have been jailed.

Russia’s Federal Investigative Committee (SK) said it is handling 12 more criminal cases linked to theft in this mega-project, which Putin sees as a strategic priority for Russia, because of its huge commercial potential.

Prof Mark Galeotti, a Russia expert at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi), told the BBC the Vostochny scandal highlighted the scale of corruption in Putin’s huge state bureaucracy.

Vostochny was Russia’s first purpose-built civilian site for commercial space launches. The first launch took place in April 2016 and there have been four more since.

Space missions are a matter of national pride for

Russia: it was the Soviet Union, after all, which sent the first human into space Yuri Gagarin - in 1961.

Visiting Vostochny in September, Putin told space officials: “This is the country’s most important construction project of national significance.”

Vostochny’s total cost is currently put at 300 billion roubles (£3.6 billion; US$4.7 billion), Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reports. But the project has been dogged by cost overruns and delays.

The space centre is still being built: a second launchpad under construction will host the Angara, a new heavy-payload rocket, with the inaugural launch set for 2021.

exico, Uruguay, and representatives of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) on

Monday rejected the use of force and human rights violations in Venezuela, urging a peaceful and demo-

cratic solution to solve the crisis in the troubled South American nation.

The group issued the statement after Venezuela’s Opposition staged nationwide protests against President Nicolás Maduro on Saturday and called for a new wave of demonstrations to revive stalled efforts to topple the deeply unpopular ruling Socialist Party.

“We call on all actors to take the path of a broad, credible and inclusive dialogue for that purpose,” the group said. “We reiterate our concern about the humanitarian situation in Venezuela.” (Reuters)

Bolivian official said a United Nations envoy is urging the Government of the Andean country’s interim president and supporters of self-exiled leader Evo Morales to begin talks on resolving a crisis that has already claimed 23 lives and is causing food shortages.

The official said on Sunday that negotiations proposed by Jean Arnault would involve legislators from Morales’ party, mobilised groups and representatives of interim leader Jeanine Anez and be mediated by the UN and the Roman Catholic Church.

Bolivia remains in limbo one week after Morales, a charismatic left-wing former coca farmer, resigned over

allegations of vote tampering. Legislators have yet to agree on a date for new elections.

Morales fled to Mexico on Tuesday, but his supporters from largely coca-farming regions of the Andean nation have since taken to the streets, sometimes armed with homemade bazookas, handguns and grenades, barricading roads and skirmishing with security forces.

Some have demanded the resignation of Anez, a former conservative lawmaker, who has already begun to revise Morales-era policies even as she says she wants to negotiate with the Opposition.

New report proposes recommendations to Brazil’s Amazon deforestation improve the lives of men in the Caribbean highest since 2008, space agency says

he Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Monday said the life expectancy for men in the Caribbean is 5.8 years below that of women, partly because societal expectations contribute to risk-seeking behaviours.

The new report titled “Masculinities and Health in the Region of the Americas” was launched on the eve of International Men’s Day to be observed today.

The report notes that societal expectations of men to be providers, to engage in risk-seeking behaviours, to be sexually dominant, and to avoid discussing their

emotions or seeking help, behaviours commonly referred to as “toxic masculinity”, are contributing to higher rates of suicide, homicide, addictions, and road traffic accidents, as well as chronic non-communicable diseases among men.

“We must not lose sight of the fact that women bear differential risks associated with their status as women,” said Anna Coates, PAHO’s Chief of the Equity, Gender and Cultural Diversity.

“But the socialisation of men also leads to a broad range of health problems that can only be addressed through responsive health

policies, programmes and services that focus on their particular needs.”

The report also highlights that one out of five men die before the age of 50 and many of the leading causes of death in the Americas, including heart disease, interpersonal violence, and road accidents are directly related to socially constructed “macho” behaviours.

According to the report, the gender roles, norms and practices socially imposed on men reinforce a lack of self-care and neglect of their own physical and mental health. (CMC)

he Indian Government has told a court that its federal ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes implies that their use is also prohibited, legal documents seen by Reuters showed, in a further clampdown on the devices.

Citing health risks, India in September banned the import, manufacture, sale, advertisement, storage and distribution of e-cigarettes, dashing future plans of companies such as US-based Juul Labs and Philip Morris International.

India’s decision, however, did not ban the use of such devices outright, and a senior Health Ministry official told Reuters after the announcement that e-cigarette use would not be

However, in a Nov 5 filing in a Kolkata court, where the Government is defending two legal challenges against the ban, the

Ministry said it was “completely baseless” to say only the sale and manufacture of e-cigarettes and vaping devices was barred, and not use.

“The ordinance is aimed at banning the product.

Once the import, production, manufacture, distribution and storage of e-cigarettes is prohibited, it is implied that the use of e-cigarettes is also prohibited,” said the court filing, which has been reviewed by Reuters and has not been made public.

The Health Ministry official said on Monday the court document was “factually correct”, without giving further details due to the court proceedings.

hina on Monday called on the US military to stop flexing its muscles in the South China Sea and to avoid adding “new uncertainties” over Taiwan, during high-level talks that underscored tension between the world’s two largest economies.

The remarks by Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe to US Defence Secretary Mark Esper, recounted by a Chinese spokesman, came just two weeks after a top White House official denounced Chinese “intimidation” in the busy waterway.

It also came a day after Esper publicly accused Beijing of “increasingly resorting to coercion and intimidation to advance its

strategic objectives” in the region.

Food prices push Nigeria inflation to 17-month high after border closures

igher food prices pushed up annual inflation in Nigeria last month after borders with neighboring countries were closed in a crackdown on smuggling.

Nigeria closed parts of its borders in August to fight smuggling of rice and other goods. The Head of customs confirmed last month that all trade in goods via land borders had been halted indefinitely.

Annual inflation was 11.61 per cent in October, up from 11.24 per cent in September, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday — the highest rate since May 2018. Consumer inflation had dropped to its lowest in almost four years in August.

A separate food price index showed inflation at 14.09 per cent in October, compared with 13.51 per

cent a month earlier.

“The rise in food inflation does suggest that border closures may have played a part in temporarily pressuring prices higher,” said Razia Khan, chief economist for Africa and the Middle East at Standard Chartered.

Last week the West African country, along with neighbouring Benin and Niger, agreed to set up a joint border patrol force to tackle smuggling between the nations after a meeting between their Foreign Ministers.

US has world’s highest rate of children in detention – UN study

Children should only be detained as a measure of last resort and for the shortest time possible, according to the United Nations Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty.

“The United States is one of the countries with the highest numbers -

we still have more than 100,000 children in migration-related detention in the [US],” Nowak told a news briefing.

“Of course, separating children, as was done by the Trump Administration, from their parents and even small children at the Mexican-US border is absolutely prohibited by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. I would call it inhuman treatment for both the parents and the children,” he added.

There was no immediate reaction from US authorities. Novak said US officials had not replied to his questionnaire sent to all countries.

Novak said the US had ratified major international treaties such as those guaranteeing civil and political rights and banning torture, but was the only country not to have ratified the pact on the rights of children.

Palestinians view Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as an obstacle to peace

he US has shifted its position on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, no longer viewing them as inconsistent with international law.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the status of the West Bank was for Israelis and Palestinians to negotiate.

Israel welcomed the move - a reversal of the US stance under President Donald Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama.

Settlements are communities established by Israel on land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.

They have long been a source of dispute between Israel and the international community, and the Palestinians.

“After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate,” Pompeo told reporters, “The United States has concluded that “the establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law”.

“Calling the establishment of civilian settlements inconsistent with international law hasn’t worked. It hasn’t advanced the cause of peace,” he added.

The Palestinian Authority said the US decision was “completely against international law”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the policy shift “rights a historical wrong”, and called on other countries to do the same.

About 600,000 Jews live in about 140 settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The settlements are widely considered illegal under international law, though Israel has always disputed this.

GBA wraps up Trophy Stall tournament A

spiring youngsters and their experienced counterparts had the opportunity to get in on some badminton action when the Trophy Stall’s annual Age Group Badminton Tournament served off on Saturday.

Following the day-long competition, the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) expressed its extreme pleasure at seeing the prevailing interest in badminton, as reflected in the number of players who turned out to participate in the tournament.

The GBA also made special mention of those players who had travelled all the

way from Linden, from the Mackenzie High School, to participate. The GBA had, last August, donated several pieces of equipment to the sports coordinator of the school in the school’s effort to restart its badminton club, and was elated to see that the programme is already being developed there.

The GBA is expected to host a final tournament for the 2019 year. It will give players in the Under-19 Boys & Girls Singles and Open Men’s & Ladies Doubles categories a chance to showcase their skills.

That tournament will serve off in December.

he SR3 Radicals had their second run at the South Dakota Racing Circuit when the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) hosted their Clash of Champions tournament last Sunday.

Current British F4 Champion Zane Maloney participated, and put on an impressive display in the quickest class of the day. The 16-year-old swept the three-race SR3 Radicals Cup on Sunday in demanding fashion, and this was the GMR&SC’s premier event of the year.

Maloney’s weekend was quite impressive. He acquired the pole position for the first race, which he won three seconds ahead of Trinidad & Tobago’s Luke Bhola.

In the second showdown, due to the rules governing the reverse grid in the Radicals’ Cup, Maloney started at the back of the pack, but was already in control of things by lap 4, racing toward the 15-lap limit.

As expected, he dominated the third Radical race, lapping a couple of competitors in the process.

In the Superstock and Supersport classes, it was business as usual for Team Mohamed’s daredevils, who remained undefeated, with British riders Richard Cooper and Daniel Linfoot sweeping their respective classes, while Harry Truelove rode in second only to Linfoot.

In the Group Four category, 2017 and 2018 CMR&SC Champion, Andrew King of Guyana, showed his superiority with a clean sweep of that class, despite some fight from Mark Maloney and fellow Guyanese Stefan Jeffrey.

Suleman Esuf of Barbados swept Group Three, while his brother Ahmed picked up one win in Group Two -- after Guyana’s Rameez Mohamed had won the first race but was derailed in his second race because his rear bumper was rammed.

The Choke Starlet Cup races saw Motilall Deodass picking up a win, a second and a third-place finish, accumulating points which may be enough to see him dethrone reigning champion Annand Ramchand for the overall championship and $500,000 first prize.

Following the action, GMR&SC President Rameez Mohammed briefly commented on the well-attended event. He said: “The event was very successful. I feel pleased with all the hard work the office staff put out. It was very competitive. We had drivers from Barbados, Trinidad, Canada and the UK; so, in all, it was a great event.”

nnandale Secondary School again put on a flamboyant show when play in the Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Under-18 Football League continued yesterday at the Ministry of Education Ground on Carifesta Avenue.

They devastated Queen’s College 6-nil in a high-scoring affair, even as new faces interestingly appeared in the Annandale scoring party for this encounter.

John Roopnarine got things going in the 14th minute, while Annandale were still finding their rhythm against their opponents; and Ajaye Sobers penetrated the goal four minutes later, to push the score to 2-0. Queen’s College then tightened their defenses, restricting Annandale from invading the back of their net for the remainder of the half.

But when the second segment began, Seon Heywood greeted Queen’s College with an Annandale goal in the 36th minute, and Colin Henriques added his name to the scoresheet in the 50th minute; while Omari Glasgow netted one four minutes later.

Henriques returned to net his second goal in the 62nd minute, giving Queen’s College a 6-nil thrashing at the hands of Annandale, and handing the defending champions yet another win in the 2019 league.

President’s College remained consistent with a victory over St. Stanislaus College. Saints, who have not yet been able to register a win, couldn’t shake their bad luck when they met with President’s College. Their defenses fell apart in the final moments of the game to give PC a 2-0 victory.

Jushawn Bayley was again the star for PC. He stunned Saints’ custodian with a goal each in the 51st and 60th minutes, allowing the boys in purple to rejoice.

In the final game of the day, Charlestown Secondary and St. John’s College had to share points after playing to a 1-1 draw.

Kurt Carrington put St. John’s in the driving seat in the 3rd minute, but their celebrations were short-lived, as John Simon equalized in the 6th minute.

As regulation time continued, neither side could find the back of the goal for a second strike, resulting in the draw.

The Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Under 18 Football League will continue on Sunday. The tournament is also sponsored by ANSA McAL under their Lucozade and iCool water brands.

Ottley stars with maiden hundred for Pride ꟷ Persaud, Henry record half-centuries

jorn Ottley defied his former teammates to gather his maiden List A hundred and help Barbados Pride end their losing streak against Combined Campuses & Colleges Marooners in the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup on Sunday.

Entering the contest at Warner Park, the Pride had lost their four previous games against the Marooners in the Super50 Cup. It included their second match of this year’s competition by four wickets eight days ago at the same venue.

But Ottley, a member of the Marooners side that won last year’s Super50 Cup, struck a fluent, undefeated 101 to be the rock upon which the Pride built their successful chase of a target of 208 in their day/

night, Group A contest.

The left-hander cracked 10 fours and two sixes from 127 balls and shared an opening stand of 74 with fellow opener Leniko Boucher before keeping the scorecard ticking in the face of instability from the rest of the Pride batting in a tense four-wicket win.

Boucher made 25 and, so too, wicketkeeper/batsman Tevyn Walcott in the face of controlled bowling from the Marooners on another hard, true pitch.

Pride slipped to 102 for three, losing Boucher, lefthander Nicholas Kirton and their captain Jonathan Carter for 28 in the space of 44 balls before Ottley got together with Kyle Mayers and Walcott for stands of 33 and 45 respectively, that kept the group leaders on course for victory.

The Trinidad & Tobagoborn Ottley reached his hundred from 124 with a single to long-on off Brathwaite in the 44th over before Ashley Nurse brought the match to a close when he pulled the third ball of the 45th over – from left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh – through mid-wicket for four.

The result kept the Pride firmly fixed in the top spot in the group on 20 points and the Marooners riveted to the bottom on four points.

Earlier, left-hander Akshaya Persaud and Saddique Henry hit purposeful half-centuries to prop up the Marooners batting, after they chose to bat.

s action continued in the West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) Beacons 50-Over competition at the Zeeburg Cricket Ground, Zeeburg Sports Club were able to defend their small total and defeat Cornelia Ida by a single run in a 50over match.

Both teams looked poised and ready for action as they took to the centre for the toss.

CI won the toss, and invited Zeeburg to bat first on a pitch made slightly damp by an early morning shower. The Zeeburg side were forced to attack from ball one, thus they were not allowed to settle, as the damp pitch made it hard to read the ball.

Batting first at home in the past had proven beneficial to the Zeeburg side, as they have posted 200-plus scores 90 per cent of the time, thus dominating their opponents.

But this was not their day, and they suffered a mini collapse early on in the innings.

As soon as a partnership was in the making, the Zeeburg side would lose a wicket as the Cornelia Ida side continued to chisel away at

their efforts. In the end, Zeeburg could post only 131 all out in their allotted overs.

Balbinder Shivpersaud top scored with 40, Ushardeva Balgobin made 32, and Malcolm Hubbard made 29. The bowling was dominated by Arshad Azim, who had figures of 6 for 22.

The visiting Cornelia Ida side sensed victory, and were confident they could overhaul this below-par total, but they did not cater for the figurative rollercoaster ride that was in the making.

One moment the Cornelia Ida side were on course for victory, the next moment they were staring down the barrel of defeat as medium pacers Jamal Gomes and Malcolm Hubbard wreaked havoc in their batting to deny them a win by one single run.

Bowling for Zeeburg, Jamal Gomes picked up 4 for 11 and Malcom Hubbard took 3 for 30. Naveed Ali top scored with 33, but received no support from his team mates.

t was a disappointing night for Guyana at the Queen’s Park Oval as they went down to the West Indies Emerging Players (WIEP) by 1 run via the Duckworth

Lewis Method, in a thrilling 30-over affair. The overs were reduced due to rain.

Winning the toss, Guyana elected to field as they

intended to repeat their victory over their opponents. The last time Guyana faced WIEP was on November 7, 2019 at Tarouba.

That encounter saw Guyana barely cross the margin thanks to the resilience of Kemol Savory who scored 71 off 146 balls.

But nevertheless the weather had other plans. The (WIEP) took to the crease and found themselves at 16 for 2, but an 86run stand between Justin Greaves (53) and Joshua Da Silva (39) propelled their side to 101-2.

But in the blink of an eye things changed, the score was suddenly at 1357 as 5 wickets fell for a measly 34 runs.

Chandrapaul Hemraj (3/18) and Ramaal Lewis (3/22) chipped away at the innings of their opponents who folded for 167/8. Also adding to the wickets tally were Ronsford Beaton 1-36 and Versammy Permaul 1-35.

overs. The Jaguars got off to a horrendous start as they soon found themselves reeling at 5 for the loss of 2 wickets as Hemraj departed for 5 and Kemol Savory had a golden duck.

The West Indies Emerging Players now share the top spot with the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force on 16 points, while the Guyana Jaguars are in 3rd on 12 points. Guyana will then take on the Windward Islands on November 19, 2019 at Port of Spain.

he Titans Table Tennis Club has by far exceeded the expectations of many, and has managed to produce some of the top table tennis players in Guyana.

The New GPC, Kings’ Bistro and Viva are among myriad sponsors who have made it possible for Titans Club to host a high-performance training camp. Having commenced on November 9, the camp was conducted by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) instructor Christian Lillieroos, and was held at the Guyana Red Cross Headquarters in Kingston.

In an interview with Guyana Times Sport, President of the Titans Table Tennis Club, Dwain Dick, was asked about his view regarding the introduction of Lillieroos. He said, “I think the business sector has been generous and supportive of our projects. TT is not yet where it should be in terms of mass participation, but in the near future they will derive maximum benefits, as TT is taking on a whole new culture in terms of mostly being played by middle and upper classes of society, which is a large target market for businesses to tap into.

“We are hoping to do some more international camps and competitions,

which will help to boost the tourism sector. Businesses like hotels, restaurants etc will see tangible returns and get max visibility and publicity.

“The coach is one of ITTF top coaches, and to come here to share his knowledge is an opportunity never before afforded to many. I, as a coach, did my level 2 (programme) with him a few years back in Jamaica, and most of what he is doing was taught in theory and demonstrated etc; but to see it executed in practice is a great learning experience for me, which only helps to improve me also as a coach.”

Dick also noted that the club hopes to contract the services of Lillieroos as a form of

sustaining a programme, and not just this programme alone.

He related that this would depend on sponsorship and the availability of Lillieroos.

It is Dick’s vision that interested companies would partner with the club and make this dream a reality.

Dick said, “I would like to thank JGS (James Samuels), GBI (Viva Water), Kings Hotel and Residences, Courts Guyana, Beacon Cafe, Payless Variety, Jai Signs, Royal Chicken Inc, New GPC under their Whizz brand, the parents (of the club) Guyana Red Cross Society (home of Titans). ollowing a gruelling day of competition at the National Park in Georgetown and the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal, Districts 6 and 11 -- Corentyne and North Georgetown respectively -- have cruised to back-to-back titles in the cycling and swimming categories.

Cycling Corentyne’s Ajay Gopilall was the man to beat at the National Park. He raced away with most of the Open prizes. Competing in the Open 5000m, 3000m and 2000m events, he sped away with gold in each race.

Speaking with this publication on Monday morning following his first

two wins, Gopilall said he was ecstatic about his improved performance, compared to what had obtained in 2018.

“It feels great winning the 5000m and 3000m. Last year

in the National Park. This, he said, has helped him to dominate the competition at the National Cycling Championships.

“It gave me a big advantage, because I know the track and I know the wind factor. Last year it was… harder, but this year I just trained, and it was easy,” Gopilall said.

Probed about the chances District 6 has at retaining the title, he said that even though it was still early in the day, he is positive they would emerge victorious. “…cause my teammates are trying their best, and teamwork wins the championship,” he expressed.

he Golden Jaguars wrapped up their CONCACAF Nations League campaign with a 1-1 result against the Reggae Boyz in Jamaica. Emery Welshman scored the only goal for Golden Jaguars.
