Respect for diversity must be a core national value – Pres Ali

On the occasion of Youman Nabi and in the wake of Guyana’s recent success at the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), President Dr Irfaan Ali has reminded that respect for diversity must be a core national value and Guyanese should continue their support of each other, as was evident during cricket.

In his Youman Nabi message, President Ali described today as a special time in the Islamic calendar, when Muslims come together to recall the life and teachings of the Prophet Mohammed and reflect on his exemplary character.

“The Holy Quran urges us to refrain from insulting or disrespecting those who follow different paths and beliefs, emphasising the importance of knowledge and understanding in our interactions with others. This message is particularly relevant in our country where diversity is an asset and unity of paramount importance.

“Youman Nabi serves as a reminder that regardless of our individual beliefs, we can come together as one community to celebrate our successes –both individual and collective. Regardless of our differences, we can and must find common cause in uplifting our nation and all its people,” the President said.

LOTTERY NUMBERS

According to President Ali, it is important that Guyanese continue to unify and support each other in much the same way as they came together during the CPL tournament, which Guyana won for the first time on Sunday.

“As we observe Youman Nabi, let us continue to

come together, supporting each other, egging each other forward, celebrating our successes and respecting our differences. A fitting manner to honour the Holy Prophet (on whom be peace) is to continue to fashion a society in which respect for each other’s beliefs and traditions is not just a principle but a core national value.

“In recent days, we've witnessed how much can be achieved when we rally together behind our country. We have experienced the pride and overflowing joy evoked by the success of our cricketers, and how much this success has meant to all our people. Guyanese from all walks of life came together to support their team,” President Ali said.

He further noted that as Youman Nabi celebrations were held and the Islamic community opened its doors to neighbours and friends, it should also be viewed as a time of spiritual reflection, communal prayers, and acts of charity.

“As we commemorate the birth and death of the Holy Prophet (On Whom Be Peace), let us reflect on the wisdom of the Holy Quran 6: 108 which advises us: And do not insult

those [who] invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus [will we] have made more pleasing to every community their deeds,” the President said.

Recommit

Meanwhile, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Retired) Mark Phillips, in his Youman Nabi message, expressed greetings on the occasion and noted that now was a time for reflection, prayer and unity, as well as a time of particular significance to Muslims around the world.

“Guyana, as you know, is a mosaic of diverse cultures, traditions, and religions. Our rich tapestry of cultures has woven together a vibrant and harmonious nation where people from various backgrounds live in peace and harmony. Youman Nabi reminds us of the values that unite us all, transcending our differences and fostering a sense of belonging.

“In the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we find a shining ex-

ample of compassion, humility, and wisdom. His teachings emphasise the importance of kindness, tolerance, and justice. These values are the cornerstones of Islam and are also universal principles guiding us on our shared journey as a nation,” the Prime Minister said.

Phillips noted that as Guyanese commemorated this special day, it was important to reflect on how better to embody the Prophet’s values in our daily lives. The Prime Minister also urged Guyanese to use the occasion to recommit ourselves to these positive values and “resolve to work hand in hand, irrespective of our backgrounds, to overcome the challenges that lie ahead and to build a brighter future for our beloved nation.”

The history of the Prophet’s birthday is traced to around AD 570. Youman Nabi was first observed during the 13th century, with the earliest Muslims using up an entire month to do this. (G3)

Youman Nabi

Today is a public holiday – Youman Nabi – which commemorates the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of the Islamic religion. It is a mark of the enlightened approach that Guyanese have for the peaceful co-existence of religions that even though Muslims constitute possibly only 10 per cent of Guyana’s population, their major festivals receive equal public observation with those of the other major religions – Hinduism and Christianity.

In today’s world, religion has, unfortunately, become a source of conflict more than a source of peace. In this regard, Guyana, small as it is, has a lot to offer the world. Much of the tension among religious adherents arises out of not necessarily the making of exclusivistic claims that raise hackles in the followers of other religions, but in the insistence of some to act on those claims by proselytising among the latter groups.

From this perspective, Islam in Guyana has the most to offer to peaceful coexistence. Islam does announce that it presents the only path to God (specifically “Allah”) and salvation. In this way, it is exclusivist. But, in Guyana, the Muslims have never gone out to “convert” anyone through proselytising activities that include denunciations of the beliefs and practices of other religions, yet the Muslim population has steadily increased through the years, not only through a higher birth rate, but through others accepting the tenets of Islam on their own.

How was this achieved? The major reason is that Muslims are exhorted not only to have abstract beliefs, but to concretely practise the tenets of the religion as expounded in the Quran. Actions are as important as beliefs. What makes the actions easier to inculcate is that, following the Quran, the life of the Prophet Muhammad as outlined in the “Hadith” is a most authoritative exposition of what behaviour constitutes a Muslim. If one is told to be “kind”, then there are the countless examples of kindness performed by the Prophet. Sacrifice? Here again, look at what the Prophet did in similar circumstances.

So, in Guyana, we have the living experience of Muslims giving charity to others, taking care of their bereaved, and generally striving to live as one big family. The “anomie” or “alienation” that so many complain about in the modern world has to be less in the Muslim community, because of the conscious cultivation of the network of relationships that create strong communities. Others in the wider society see living cohesiveness and are attracted to the religion.

In Guyana, the racial divisions have been the bane of our quest for a more peaceful life. When the ancestors of African Guyanese were brought as slaves, starting in the 17th Century, there were a significant number of Muslims among their midst.

The term “Fulaman”, which is colloquially applied in the present to Muslims, is thought to have been derived from “Fulani”, an African people who were among the first in that continent to practise Islam. However, by the end of slavery, Islam, as a living religion, had been beaten out of its adherents. In the last few years, however, there has been a significant number of Africans who have accepted Islam – without any proselytisation. It is hoped that the sharing of a common way of life and an acceptance of the equality of all adherents — which is stressed by Islam — would go a long way towards reducing inter-racial tensions.

The Prophet Muhammad left a living example of how a leader of a country should act and behave. Modesty, frugality, fairness, mercifulness, and practising what is demanded of others were some of his watchwords. While there is great stress nowadays on academic qualifications, the life of the Prophet Muhammad demonstrates that more than all the “learning”, a leader must be imbued by positive values.

Happy Youman Nabi, Guyana!

Youman Nabi offers lessons in humility, contentment, respect, love – PPP

On the occasion of Youman Nabi, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) takes this opportunity to extend best wishes to all Guyanese, particularly the Muslim communities here in Guyana and across the Diaspora.

The day of Youman Nabi is very dear to our Muslim brothers and sisters, as both the birth and death anniversaries of Islam’s Holy Prophet Mohammad are observed. Its significance offers many pertinent lessons in humility, contentment,

respect, and love among mankind.

In reflecting on the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet, there are also universal lessons for for-

giveness and tolerance.

Our Party firmly believes that the messages from these lessons offer much guidance, and if heeded by all, can aid in

the realisation of peace, love, and brotherhood across the world.

Our national festivals and holidays continue to be that vital conduit of togetherness and tolerance as we work collectively towards achieving the national goal of one people with a common destiny.

As our Muslim brothers and sisters congregate across the country in observance of this occasion, our Party extends greetings and wishes of success for the various activities planned.

ERC extols the preservation of Guyana’s religious diversity

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) extends greetings to all Guyanese, particularly our Muslim brothers and sisters, in observance of Youman Nabi -- the birth anniversary of Islam’s Holy Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH).

Observed as a national holiday in Guyana, Youman Nabi brings reflection on the exemplary life and inspirational teachings of Prophet Muhammad, (PBUH).

Teachings such as truth, righteousness, unity, and forbearance are in consonance with the values needed for the promulgation of under-

standing and tolerance. Both are essential ingredients in the realisation of national harmony, which is integral to the work of the Commission.

It is for this reason that the ERC

extols the preservation of Guyana’s religious diversity and the significance of holidays such as Youman Nabi, which inculcate and proliferate the messages of oneness, respect, peace, and trustworthiness.

In the words of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), “None of you will be a believer until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.” As Guyanese, the best way we can defend Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is to behave like him.

The ERC urges reflection by all Guyanese on the significance of Youman Nabi.

Prophet Muhammad endured many hardships, but remained faithful – CIOG

In the name of Allah (swt), The Infinitely Merciful, The Infinitely Compassionate

O Allah, bless our beloved Muhammad (saw), the light of lights, the secret of secrets, the antidote for depression, and the key to the door of ease…

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad (saw) in every drop of rain that has fallen from Your heavens to Your earth from the day You created the world to the Day of Resurrection, and every day a thousand times; and upon his family, the pure ones, grant as much of the bounties of Allah (swt) and His blessings. Assalaamu-Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi WaBarakatuh.

May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah (swt) be with you all.

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam and humanity, on this joyful occasion of observing the birth and

life of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw), I extend greetings to you on behalf of the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana. May Allah (swt) bless us and accept all our devotion and service. Aameen.

Our perpetual love for Prophet Muhammad (saw) is the framework by which every Muslim lives his life; and what a beautiful life we will have if we are guided by the Prophet’s (saw) exemplary conduct. He (saws) taught and reminded us to be obedient to Allah swt, encouraged us to engage with the Holy Quran, to al-

ways keep learning, to remain humble, to treat our neighbours well; never hold a grudge, instead withhold your anger, respond with forgiveness. These are among the many traits that would ensure our felicity in this life and the next.

We are reminded in many narrations that when the Prophet (saw) was born, the thrones of kings shook, palaces crumbled, idols in the Kabaa fell, and fires of worship were extinguished. These signs were evidence of the power and favour that Allah (swt) would bestow on his Final

Youman Nabi a reminder of Guyana’s multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious society – GAWU

The observance of Youman Nabi reminds us once again of our multi-ethnic and multi-cultural character. Indeed, it is our rich tapestry that sets us apart and adds to our specialness as a country. As GAWU extends greetings on the Islamic celebration, we are reminded that Youman Nabi, or Mawlid al-Nabi, or Eid-eMilad, fixed on the 12th day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal in the Muslim calendar, is a celebration of the Birth Anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam. The day is marked by sermons, recitation of litanies, honouring of religious dignitaries, gift giving, and a feast. The occasion also serves as a reminder that whatever trials and tribulations we face, the prophet of God faced even greater, and yet he never allowed anger and hatred to determine his actions.

Our union, which boasts hundreds of Muslim members and workers, joins in this reflective Birth Anniversary celebration. It must be noted that in the Prophet’s area of this world, many of the

virtues he preached – sacrifice, charity, peace, unity and understanding –are all seemingly in very short supply. Conflicts of all types beset countries surrounding the Prophet’s Birthplace. Refugees cry out for help, holding on to the Prophet’s teachings to keep them alive and sane. May this Youman Nabi join them and rid their leaders of intolerance and lust for pure power.

Therefore, the Islamic community in Guyana has a lot to be thankful for, and to celebrate at this time Youman Nabi 2023. The importance of social cohesion, peace, equality, economic fair play and progress cannot be understated. That is what any society needs to survive and prosper. In terms of social cohesion and peaceful co-existence in commu-

Messenger.

Prophet Mohammed (saw) suffered many hardships as an orphan and an adult. He (saws) endured years of persecution before He (saws) marched triumphantly into the city of his birth at the head of the largest army ever assembled in Arabian history.

Through it all, the Prophet (saw) remained faithful and set the example of how to live in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (swt). The Prophet (saw) was humble, loyal, honest, patient, considerate, compassionate, and merciful. The Prophet’s (saw) character was of such high moral excellence that even his enemies testified to it, and he was known among his people as al-Amîn — the Trustworthy. Allah (swt)

confirmed:

And verily, you (O Muhammad) are of the highest standard of character (Quran 68:4)

tion and racial superiority do not give special status to anyone; all of you are equal in the eyes of God. It is only the path of righteousness which makes you a distinguished human being."

His dying words were filled with care, concern, and a recipe for success:

“Treat your women well, and do not oppress your servants. The prayer, the prayer, don’t be neglectful of the prayer. O God, my highest companion, my highest companion.”

Prophet Muhammad (saw) displayed a true and abiding love for his followers, and offered ceaseless prayers on our behalf for protection, guidance, mercy, and forgiveness. In return, we offer prayers of gratitude and respect and love, and we strive to follow his example so that we can be worthy to obtain his intercession to help us enter paradise.

we good and truthful to our family, neighbours and friends, do we withhold being angry and responding with forgiveness? Unless we can all refine our character, only then can we find true felicity in this life and the next, and then and only then can we claim to truly love Prophet Muhammad (saws).

There is much work for all of us to do. I ask Allah (swt) to bless all of you as we join in praising our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw):

O Allah, bless our Master Muhammad, who opened what was closed and sealed what was before. He makes the truth victorious, and he is the guide to Your Straight Path. And bless his Household as it befits his immense stature and splendour.

nities, our Muslim community has been exemplary – from their economic and commercial acumen engendering manufacturing and employment to their characteristic charity.

As we all celebrate Youman Nabi 2023, we need to recommit ourselves to the achievement of the ideals of a truly multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious society where there is unity in diversity.

Happy Youman Nabi to all Guyanese!

Stories abound about Prophet Muhammad’s (saw) patience, loyalty, and compassion to all around him. He (saw) was consistently kind and considerate to his family, his followers, his detractors, and to every living creature, including animals and trees. The Prophet (saw) reminded us:

“…verily, Allah is kind (gentle) and He loves kindness (gentleness), and confers upon kindness what he does not confer upon severity…” Sahih Muslim 2593

The occasion of celebrating the birth and life of our Master and Guide, our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw), should be used to strengthen our will to follow his example. Let us reflect on his message: “Wealth, social posi-

Let the noble birth of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (saws) be a new beginning for us to evaluate where we are in emulating the beautiful Prophetic character of the best of creation. Let us sincerely ask ourselves how far have we progressed in our obedience to Allah swt, how much of the Holy Quran do we read and reflect on in our daily lives, are our experiences in life uplifting us, are

Oh Allah! Bestow Your Mercy and Blessings upon Muhammad whenever he is remembered, and bestow Your Mercy and Blessings upon Muhammad whenever he is not remembered.

US congressional leaders ask APNU, AFC for development plan

Guyana’s Parliamentary Opposition on Wednesday met with United States Congressional Leaders on Capitol Hill, and during the meeting, the Guyanese politicians were asked to show their developmental plans for the country.

Led by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, a team of Members of Parliament from the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance For Change (AFC) travelled to Washington, D.C. for a meeting with the Black Congressional Caucus.

The Leader of the Opposition’s office said last week that the engagement with House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries and his team will focus on the opportunities and challenges confronting Guyana, and on how political stakeholders in the country can work together to ensure that all Guyanese citizens, regardless of race or ethnicity, benefit from the country’s oil wealth.

Norton was joined by People’s National Congress Reform General Secretary Dawn Hastings; Shadow Local Government Minister and PNCR Executive Committee

Member Ganesh Mahipaul; Shadow Attorney General and PNCR Executive Committee

Member Roysdale Forde; Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs and PNCR Executive Committee Member Amanza Walton-Desir; PNCR Member

Nima Flue Bess; Chairman of the AFC, Catherine Hughes; AFC Member Deonarine Ramsaroop; and Leader of Guyana Action Party (GAP), Vincent Henry.

Shadow Minister of Public Works and AFC Executive Committee Member David Patterson was also scheduled to be part of the delegation and deliver presentations before the Congressional Caucus. However, he was unable to fly

after his name was “inadvertently” left on the Guyanese Immigration Department’s no fly list when it should have been removed since July.

Healthy exchange

Following Wednesday’s meeting, Norton said the engagement with the congressional leaders went “extremely well”. He said they were able to inform the US officials of the critical issues in Guyana, and give them a clear vision of where his party wants to take the country.

“I think there was a healthy exchange. We understand some of their interests, where the confluence of interest lies, and we will pursue those issues,” he noted.

According to the Opposition Leader, while Congresswoman Maxine Waters accepted some of the Opposition’s positions during the meeting, she also pointed to the fact that there are two sides to a coin.

Norton outlined that he was able to present a document to the Congressional leaders that clearly details the Opposition’s approach to governance in Guyana.

“[Congresswoman Waters]

asked for a clear development plan, which we identified the tenets. We also left with her a document that will give a lot of that information. There is a wider dossier that we would’ve left that would’ve put all the issues in context in Guyana,” Norton said during a briefing after the meeting.

Meanwhile, US House of Representatives leader Hakeem Jeffries told the Opposition politicians that he wants to see more inclusivity between Guyanese leaders, and urged the APNU/AFC delegation to work towards this.

This meeting with the Opposition MPs comes about two weeks after House Leader Jeffries hosted an engagement with President Dr Irfan Ali and a delegation of Government officials.

Jeffries said in a Facebook post that they discussed several critical issues, including regional and energy security, the climate crisis, and the importance of an inclusive society in Guyana that involved full economic participation and civic engagement by Guyanese-Africans and Guyanese-Indians. They also talked about electoral re-

form, strengthening democratic institutions, and the need to bolster access to banking and financial services in the Caribbean region.

Several leading congressional members with expertise in foreign affairs, finance, security, and other critical issues to the Western Hemisphere and the Caribbean-American community in Brooklyn and across the United States also participated.

At the time, Jeffries had indicated that when he

meets with the leaders of the Guyanese Opposition party, he would continue the dialogue about the opportunities and challenges confronting Guyana.

“We will continue to encourage the Government and the Opposition to work together to ensure that all Guyanese citizens, regardless of race or ethnicity, benefit from the economic growth underway in the South American nation,” Jeffries had stated in the social media post earlier this month.

During that meeting, President Ali was accompanied by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Hugh Todd; Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Oneidge Walrond; and Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud.

In a Facebook post, the Foreign Secretary had highlighted the significance of the meeting.

“We are happy that the Congressman and Democratic Leader in the House responded to the Government’s request to meet, which enabled a constructive discourse on regional issues and the trajectory of Guyana’s socioeconomic development. Further,

that the Congressman has acknowledged President Ali’s invitation to visit Guyana is most welcomed,” Persaud stated.

Congressman Jeffries is a US Democratic Party top leader in the House of Representatives. He is a representative of parts of Brooklyn and Queens in New York, which is home to a large Guyanese population, and has been making public statements about discrimination in Guyana – a narrative that is being peddled by the PNCled A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Opposition.

Last year, the Guyanese Leader had expressed concerns over remarks made by Jeffries, whom he had noted was being misled about governance issues and democracy in Guyana. In fact, President Ali had even invited the Congressman for a meeting during a July 2022 US trip, but Jeffries had declined to meet.

However, about a year later, President Ali and Congressman Jeffries met in Trinidad and Tobago, and during the brief interaction, the Guyanese Leader said he schooled the US politician on the reality in Guyana.

City Constable remanded for allegedly shooting colleague, her friend

When he appeared before Magistrate Rhondel Weever at the Georgetown Magistrates' Courts on Monday, a 50-year-old man who works for the City Constabulary of the Mayor and City Councilors of Georgetown was charged with two counts of discharging a firearm with intent.

City Constable

Lindon Isaacs from West Ruimveldt, Georgetown denied both charges.

He is accused of firing a loaded gun at Miguel Wilson and his colleague, City Lance Corporal Jammanie Saul on September 19 at the City Constabulary Outpost in Bourda, Georgetown, to maim, disable, or cause them bodily injury.

He is further accused of assaulting Saul so as to cause her bodily harm.

The prosecution opposed bail on the grounds that Isaacs fled the scene after committing the crime and turned himself in on September 21. Additionally, the prosecution requested his detention in order to keep him from endangering Saul.

Bail was refused and the accused was remanded to prison until October 23.

Saul, a 48-year-old attached to the City Constabulary, received one gunshot wound to her left hand, and Wilson, a 50-year-old overseas-based Guyanese of Section ‘C’ Enterprise, East Coast Demerara (ECD), received one gunshot wound to his left thigh.

The shooting took place at about 19:15h on the day in question.

Information from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) disclosed that Saul and Isaacs are co-workers, and were both on duty at the Bourda City Constabulary Outpost.

Overseas-based Wilson visited Saul at her workplace, and the two then sat next to each other chatting, much to the annoyance of the City Constable.

Isaacs, who was armed with the service weapon –a .38 revolver with six live rounds – reportedly became furious at seeing the duo together, and so pointed his firearm in the direction of both victims and fired three shots.

Saul and Wilson fell to the ground, while Isaacs fled the scene with the firearm. The two injured persons were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by public-spirited citizens, and were admitted as patients at the medical facility.

Bucking… …international protocols

Maduro’s at it again. The fella just doesn’t know when to stop, does he? After rejecting the World Court’s jurisdiction to decide on the merits of their concocted controversy over our borderwhich had been settled in 1899’s “full and final” Arbitral Award - he’s had to be dragged kicking and screaming by the international institution to have him accept basic international law. In the meantime, he’s been dragging one red herring after another across the trail to the Hague!!

Last week it was an objection to our acceptance of bids for exploring additional oil blocks within our Atlantic waters - as demarcated by the International Law of the Seas. Institutions from the UN, OAS, Commonwealth and Caricom to states like the US condemned his impertinence in sticking his thumb at the international order. This week, he came up with another doozy – which completely ignored the history of the prescribed steps taken to address their controversy – all adumbrated in the Geneva Agreement they signed in 1966.

First, there was gonna be a “Mixed Commission” of representatives from both countries for four years to understand Venezuela’s assumptions. These series of direct talks lasted for four years, when the Commission lapsed and Burnham and the Venezuelan President signed the “Protocol of Port of Spain” that mandated a 12-year Moratorium on the matter. When that was exhausted in 1983, they agreed for a Caricom “good office” nominee to mediate on the matter. No flexing by the Venezies. We then moved to the UN good offices to try their luck.

To continue in detail would tax the patience of even Job, much less your Eyewitness! So, let’s fast forward to the present, where – all in accordance to the Geneva Agreement – we requested that the US Secty General move the controversy to the World Court. It’d dealt with several border issues since its formation. The first issue was jurisdictional, and it was accepted by the Court’s eminent global judicial panel that, indeed, it had!! Strike one against Maduro. The Court then took evidence on the matter, and Venezuela chose to sulk on the sideline – with constant shipping for good measure.

The red herring du jour is Maduro now saying he wants “direct talks”. Hey…there were direct talks for decades on either side of the moratorium!! Did that change anything with the Venezuelan gripe that they “wuz robbed” by perfidious Albion (Britain)?? The problem for us up to now is that - because of their own interests - the UK and US supported Venezuela’s moves back in the day. Today we’ve got the opportunity to have the matter settled once and for all by a body without any axes to grind.

No talks…no diversions. Let the World Court decide!!

…history

You could’ve knocked your Eyewitness over with a feather when he got the news that PNC executive member Van West-Charles has been nominated to be the PPP Government’s ambassador to Venezuela!! Ain’t that something??!! After all, he ain’t just any PNC executive – but PNC FOUNDER LEADER FORBES BURNHAM’S SONIN-LAW!!! Back in the day, when he married Burnham’s daughter Roxanne, he became a doctor trained in Cuba, and on his return was quickly made Minister of Health!! He was dubbed “Baby Jesus”, since his father-in-law Burnham could walk on water!!

Anyhow, after Burnham passed on at the GPHC operating theatre - in the presence of Van West-Charles - he was removed from the scene – as were all the other Burnhamites - by Hoyte. He was exiled with a sinecure at PAHO!! Recently, Van West has tried manfully to reenter politics on his own (strength?) and on his fatherin-law’s name. He’s been consigned to the marginsuntil now.

But, of course, he’ll be dubbed a “sellout” by the PNC!!

…unity

One Reg 9 PNC official sourly complained that the CPL Providence crowd was mostly “East Indians”!! Jeez!! Has he even attended football or hockey matches?? Has he ever commented on the makeup of their crowds?? Hey…different sports for different folks!!

David Patterson’s name “inadvertently” left on ‘no-fly’ list – GPF …OPR

probing matter

Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) and former government minister David Patterson has threatened legal action against the State after he was blocked on Tuesday evening from departing the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) for the United States, where he was scheduled to deliver a presentation to the Black Congressional Caucus on Capitol Hill.

According to reports, David Patterson’s name was on a ‘nofly list’, hence immigration officers at the CJIA had informed him of his inability to travel to the United States on Tuesday evening.

However, a senior Government official explained to this publication on Wednesday that the politician’s name had first been placed on the no-fly list after he had initially failed to submit himself to the Police in relation

to the indecent exposure allegations against him.

Back in July, Patterson had been charged and placed before the courts on a series of offences, including exposure of his genitals, using obscene language, and provoking a breach of the peace. This was after he had been caught urinating in public at Seaforth Street, Section A, Campbellville, Georgetown on July 16. The politician was placed on $70,000 bail during his arraignment. There was no court order issued to block him from travelling outside the court.

According to the Government official, after Patterson was charged, his name should have been removed from the list.

Man found not guilty of felonious wounding

Osafo Swain, the man who had been on trial for the offence of felonious wounding over shooting another man with a gun, was on Wednesday acquitted by a Demerara High Court jury.

The jury returned a unanimous not-guilty verdict, freeing the accused.

The indictment against Swain stated that on July 26, 2017, in the county of Demerara, he discharged a loaded firearm at Ewart Blair with the intent to maim, disable or disfigure him.

Upon his arraignment before Justice Simone MorrisRamlall, Swain had pleaded not guilty to the charge; and as such, a jury was empanelled to hear the evidence in the case.

This accused was initially indicted for attempting to commit murder with the alternative count of felonious wounding. However, upon reviewing the evidence, Justice MorrisRamlall on Wednesday directed the jury to return a formal not guilty verdict on the more serious charge.

The trial judge stated to the jury, among other things, that the case lacked forensic evidence in respect to what was taken from the virtual complainant's leg during a summary of the evidence for the alternative count. According to her, a doctor had testified that a warhead was removed from the man’s left leg and that his injuries posed no immediate danger.

The complainant, who was the prosecution’s main witness, had testified that at around 21:30 hours on the day in question, he was sitting in front of his house at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown when Swain, who

Clifton Hicken, who is the Chief Immigration Officer, apologised to Patterson in a subsequent statement on Wednesday. The Force pointed out that the politician’s name “inadvertently remained on an Immigration Department’s watchlist” from since the July investigation.

Nevertheless, the Police have said an investigation has been launched to ascertain why Patterson’s name had not been removed from the list.

“The Guyana Police Force has internal SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure) to deal with such issues, and a full probe is underway by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) as to why Mr Patterson’s name was not removed earlier from the list,” the Police related.

Meanwhile, Patterson, through his attorneys at

Hughes Fields and Stoby, has since indicated his attention to take legal action against the State.

According to a statement from the law firm, “Mr. Patterson has instructed those constitutional proceedings for damages be commenced against the State.”

The lawyers explained that Patterson had already cleared customs and immigration when he was approached by Immigration officers, who informed him that he was not permitted to travel.

During phone interactions with the politician’s lawyer, the Immigration officers indicated that while they do not have any order of Court restraining Patterson from travelling, there was “something in the system” which stated that he could not travel.

Sometime after, the

Attorneys were informed that the Immigration officers were unable to contact the Head or Deputy Head of Immigration, and in light of the fact that there was “something in the system,” Patterson was not permitted to leave the country.

Patterson had been scheduled to deliver presentations on Wednesday and Thursday to the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington D.C. He was part of a team of Opposition MPs from both the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance For Change (AFC) who, led

by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, were to travel to Washington DC this week.

In addition to Norton, the other Guyanese Opposition Parliamentarians in Washington are Dawn Hastings, Ganesh Mahipaul, Roysdale Forde, Amanza Walton-Desir, Nima Flue Bess, Catherine Hughes, Deonarine Ramsaroop and Vincent Henry.

Also on Wednesday, the Alliance For Change (AFC), of which Patterson is an Executive, issued a statement in which it condemned the blockage of the politician from flying. (G8)

was armed with a gun, shot at him twice.

Blair had said that one of the bullets struck him in his left leg.

Blair had testified that after shooting him, Swain had fled the scene as he dashed into his neighbour's yard and took cover under a dounce tree. He said he subsequently walked to the East La Penitence Police Outpost, and Police ranks transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He spent seven days at the medical facility.

Additionally, he had claimed that he was unaware of any justification for Swain wanting to hurt him, given that they were not at odds.

Swain was apprehended a few days after the shooting at his Hadfield Street, Georgetown home. In his defence, Swain had opted to remain silent.

Swain was initially charged with the crime on July 31, 2017, and was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. In December 2017, he was committed to stand trial after a Magistrate ruled that prima facie evidence was led against him when a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) ended. (G1)

9 lodges, resorts to offer affordable tourism packages in November

The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), in collaboration with the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), on Wednesday launched Guyana Escapes 2023, an initiative aimed at promoting tourism in Guyana by driving traffic to established lodges and resorts countrywide.

The promotion will see participating companies offering enticing packages and new experiences from November 1 to December 15, contingent on availability.

So far, nine businesses are partaking, namely: Karanambu Lodge, Rock View Lodge, Arrowpoint Nature Resort, Sloth Island Resort, Bimichi Eco Lodge, Atta Rainforest Lodge, Hurakabra River

Resort, Aruwai Resort, and Iwokrama River Lodge.

Holistic vision Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister

Oneidge Walrond explained that the promotion was part of the Government’s holistic vision to establish Guyana as a premier location for eco-tourism, sports, busi-

ness and more.

“Presenting this package in the way that you get deals is a great marketing tool and it's something that I can see benefiting the resorts, especially in the offseason, when traditionally you don't have that much traffic,” Waldron said.

The Tourism Minister added that this was also a move to encourage collaboration between the Government and the Private Sector in enhancing tourism products in the country.

“[I] recently visited Costa Rica where their eco-tourism product is a bit more mature. We learned that the Private Sector is the one doing the driving of their tourism product. They are a premier tourism destination and you hardly see the footprint of the Government,” Walrond

said.

“We understand that as we are small and we're now at the beginning stage. So, as a Government, we want to provide that support and it is for the Private Sector to run with the vision.”

Companies looking to participate in Guyana Escapes 2023 must be licensed by the GTA or have initiated the licensing process, and must create packages that are appealing, cost-competitive and offer discounted rates to entice travellers.

All participating businesses who have developed new experiences will receive a 25 per cent discount on the GTA licensing fees in 2024, while those that sell 25 or more of their promotional packages within the period will be offered a 25 per

cent discount on their 2024 THAG membership dues.

GTA is also extending support to businesses that require assistance with their digital marketing and promotional campaigns.

All participating businesses are required to provide their package information, pricing, images, logo and booking information by October 4.

“Our industry prides [itself on] not only the beauty of our lands, but also the warmth of our hospitality that is so meaningful and the commitment to sustainable tourism. Together, we can not only drive economic growth, but also protect and preserve the natural treasures that make our country so unique,” THAG President Dee George said.

Safety, health officials trained to execute workplace accident investigations

The Labour Ministry, in collaboration with Global People Services and Management (GPSM) Consultants Inc, on Tuesday concluded an accident and incident investigation training programme, aimed at enhancing the abilities of safety and health officers.

GPSM is a Guyaneseowned firm that is managed and operated by a team with experience in delivering services and technical assistance to international, regional, and local industrial companies at various levels, including management and consultants.

Participants in this GPSM-led training included representatives from the Labour Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department; Aurora Gold Mine/Zijin Mining Group Company; Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) and Massy Distribution.

Principal Consultant/ Business Crisis Consultant

Vincent Garth facilitated the training, ensuring that the participants were equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to execute a comprehensive accident and incident investigation on the job.

During the training’s opening ceremony on Monday, Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton had commended the initiative, noting that it would play a crucial role in continuously safeguarding workers’ safety and health.

Since the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) assumed office in

August 2020, the Labour Ministry’s OSH department was able to reduce workplace fatalities by 16 per cent in 2021, with a further 20 per cent decrease in 2022.

For 2022, the department undertook 1298 inspections countrywide in both the private and public sectors, meeting the inspection objective by 85 per cent.

Earlier this month, several employees of Aurora Gold Mine/Zijin Mining Group and Guyana Prison Service (GPS) officers took part in Joint Workplace Safety and Health Committee Training Programmes facilitated by the OSH Department.

These training sessions taught the participants about National Insurance Scheme (NIS) benefits and the legal requirement to report all workplace accidents/ diseases to NIS.

It also included sensitisation training on Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), as well as fire safety training.

This initiative essentially seeks to prepare members of the Joint Workplace Safety and Health Committee to carry out their mandate in the workplace, as required by Chapter 99:06 of the OSH Act.

Following the training’s completion, participants can now design and maintain safe work systems and practices, thereby minimising or eliminating workplace accidents altogether.

It also allows participants to demonstrate an awareness of their roles and responsibilities as Joint Workplace

Labour Ministry probing death of teen worker

The Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Department of the Labour Ministry has launched an inquiry into an accident that transpired on Tuesday at Industrial Fabrications Incorporated (InFab Inc).

That accident has led to the death of Javid Shaw, a 17-year-old junior site worker of Dochfour, East Coast Demerara.

The accident occurred at 8:45h on Tuesday at the InFab Inc construction site on Lama Avenue, Bel Air Park. It was reported that Shaw was in the process of descending from the third/ fourth floor of a five-storey building to retrieve painting supplies from the ground floor when he fell to his death.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, OSH officers visited the site and engaged the relevant authorities. Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton, in a statement on Tuesday, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the griev-

ing family and friends of the departed young worker.

He took the opportunity to emphasise the critical importance of promoting workplace safety and health practices for both employers and workers. Such practices, he said, are essential to prevent similar incidents that could lead to the loss of loved ones.

Hamilton has also affirmed that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out to address the many questions that linger in the wake of the teen’s death.

Woman caught trying to smuggle ganja in sneakers into prison

Ayoung woman of 'C' Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown is now in Police custody after she was caught attempting to smuggle cannabis concealed in a pair of sneakers into the Camp Street Prison in Georgetown on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old woman was apprehended at around 14:15h at the prison, where she had gone to deliver the item to an inmate. Upon her arrival, prison authorities conducted a search of the black plastic bag she was carrying along with the item. During the inspection, they discovered a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis hidden under the soles of the sneakers.

The suspect was informed of the find and subsequently arrested. She was then taken, along with the seized narcotics, to the Alberttown Police Station.

In response to this smuggling attempt, Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot emphasised that smuggling contraband into a correctional facility is a felony with severe consequences. He urged civilians to recognize the risks they pose to themselves, society, inmates, and officers when engaging in contraband trade within the prison walls. Additionally, Elliot commended the prison offi-

cers at the location for their vigilance and prompt action.

Only last year, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) introduced a "Stop and Search" initiative within the confines of each prison location, aiming to end the continued flow of contraband being smuggled into the prisons.

The Director of Prisons has warned that members of the public found colluding in trafficking contraband into the various prisons countrywide would be arrested and placed before the courts.

He also mentioned attempts by members of the public to throw contraband items over the prison fences. Elliot said that while there is increased monitoring and surveillance at all prison locations, it has

been observed that several attempts were being made by members of the public to throw contraband (narcotics and cigarettes) over the prison fences.

As such, he indicated that the GPS has erected signs at strategic points outside of the prisons, warning the public to desist, and detailing the consequences attached to such an act.

Further, Elliot mentioned that the Prison Administration and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have started engaging residents living in close proximity to the various prisons about the situation. He also added that a built-up civilian population living in close proximity to the prisons would have contributed to the increased contraband items being smuggled into the prisons. (G9)

Within this all-inclusive three-day trip, travellers can enjoy activities including bird watching, nature walks, canoeing, cycling and swimming. The first tour is from November 1113.

Meanwhile, Romain Persaud of Eco Destination Tours expanded on the newly launched Essequibo Weekend Getaway.

opment, as reflected in our Low Carbon Development Strategy. And it all ties into our products – our tourism products hit on all three of those markers,” Walrond said.

The minister noted that these new products will have tremendous trickle-down benefits within the economy.

“Tourism is a priority sector for the Government, and you see that in the tangible investments that we make in terms of money into the tourism sector. And it should not be taken for granted, as we can see…there are hundreds of people that are going to be employed in communities impacted directly by tourism and visitors’ dollars,” Walrond said.

Of the 15 newly launched products is Life on the River, an initiative brought forth by Shivana Gulchand of Touring Guyana.

“This experience takes you along the riverine communities of Pomeroon and Moruka. Here, persons will get to experience the way of life in these communities, such as going to your neighbour with a boat, or kids paddling to school,” Gulchand said.

“Our journey begins by crossing many rivers. We depart from Georgetown and we have to cross Demerara River, the Essequibo River, the Pomeroon River, onto the Atlantic Ocean and into the Moruka River,”

“However, this experience is not for everyone.

The experience is specifically designed for those who need a break from their busy life, those who need to renew their relationships, and for businesses looking to boost their employee productivity,” Persaud added.

As such, prices are offered in the three categories of individual packages, couple packages and company or group packages.

In addition to these two products, other new experiences travellers can enjoy are: Backdam and Bushcook Tour, also offered by Touring Guyana; Bartica Resort-Hopping, also offered by Eco Destination Tours; Pakuri Fin & Feather Adventures by Bimichi Eco Lodge; Yarrowkabra Dream ATV Tour by Savannah Tours Guyana; Moraikobai Overnight by Epic Tours; and Escape to Mahaica by Mahaica River Tours.

Meanwhile, Iwokrama Tours is offering a Yogic Medication Package, IRL Rapid Cat Run, and Essequibo Reel and Turtle Mountain/Turu Falls Hiking Excursion.

Region 9 will be an important food production & export hub – Pres Ali

…says more than 785 projects in region

With more than 785 projects ongoing in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and over 1000 acres of corn and soya planted in the Tacama Savannah, President Dr Irfaan Ali has made it clear that the region would be an important grain production and export hub.

During his visit to Lethem on Wednesday, President Ali joined in Indigenous celebrations at the St Ignatius Benab. He reminded residents of the strategic importance of Region Nine, noting that in that particular region alone almost 800 projects were ongoing.

“In this region here alone, I’m not going to remind you about the more than $1.3 billion in presi-

lages will have benefited from land transports in the last three years.

“More than 74 villages would have benefited from water transport, 84 from land transport. And I can say to you that 99 per cent of the commitment we would have made whether when I’m here, we have fulfilled for every single village,” President Ali said.

In particular when it comes to agriculture, Region Nine is currently host to over 1000 acres of soya bean crop planted in Tacama Savannah by a public-private partnership. According to President Ali, Region Nine will be an important part of Guyana’s plans to be a net exporter of agriculture.

“One of the important aspects of building these

ent villages to enhance your livelihood and your food security development. But more importantly, with the road that we’re doing and the bridges to Georgetown, a whole new market for production will increase,” the President noted.

“And Region Nine will be an important part of the grain supply. You hear about the war in Ukraine and the impact it is having on supply of grains globally. Region Nine will be an important part of producing and supplying grains, not only in Guyana, but the entire Caricom region. Region Nine will be that tremendous production base.”

Attract investors

According to the President, this will not only ensure job creation in logis-

ed that there are investors looking at value-added opportunities in the sugar sector even now.

“We want to build a food infrastructure here in this region. We have investors, looking at value added. At raw sugar produced in Brazil, to see how it can be converted into refined and liquid sugar, adding enough value to it so it can access the Caricom market. We have big plans. We have a vision for this region, which will see the complete modernisation.

“But also, the protection of our culture and the utilisation of our culture in creating a strong eco-tourism product. We’ll build the infrastructure. We’re going to do the training. We’re going to invest in our human capacity to build our eco-tour-

ism in this region. Not only strong, but competitive,” President Ali further explained.

Earlier this month, he had revealed that as of the first half of 2023, Guyana had cultivated over 3000 acres of soya beans and over 1200 acres of corn. President Ali had also indicated Government’s commitment to ensuring that by the end of 2026, Guyana would have 50,000 acres of land under corn and soya cultivation.

The key stakeholders in the massive corn and soya bean project include the Government, farmers, and private companies.

However, the Government has played a crucial role in supporting the growth of the industry, with a commitment of over $1.2 billion

to infrastructural development in the Tacama area, Berbice River.

Last year, the Government improved access to the area by constructing 40 kilometres of road, with the remaining seven kilometres scheduled to be completed in 2023. Additionally, the Government invested in a drying and storage facility for corn and soya bean, which will be completed this year, establishing the first such facility in the country.

Plans are also afoot to start cultivating corn and soya bean in Moco Village, North Rupununi. The Agriculture Ministry is also assessing the capacity in other regions, with the aim of taking the project there in the future. (G3)

Police locate car in fatal Coldingen hit and run

The Guyana Police Force has located the vehicle believed to have been involved in the hit-and-run accident along the Coldingen Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), near Chico Ramas Gas Station on Friday.

The accident resulted in the death of 25-year-old Adzel Inniss, a truck driver of Burma Housing Scheme, Mahaicony, ECD.

According to the Police, detectives received information on Tuesday morning, prompting officers from Vigilance Police Station to proceed to Victoria, ECD.

There, they discovered motor car PAD 9709parked in a yard with substantial damage to the left side of the front.

The vehicle was subsequently transported to the Cove and John Police Station, ECD, for further investigation. However, Police did not disclose whether they had located the driver of the car or made any arrests in connection with the accident.

On the day of the accident, about 04:30h, Inniss had stopped his motor

lorry, bearing registration GAC 1443, in the vicinity of Chico Ramas Gas Station. He was in the process of disembarking the vehicle when he allegedly stepped into the path of a black Toyota Fielder Wagon.

Inniss then collapsed onto the road. The driver of the Fielder Wagon fled the scene, and both the car's registration and the driver's identity remained unknown.

Ahit-and-run accident that occurred on Thursday along the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Railway Embankment on the East Coast of Demerara has resulted in the death of an unidentified man.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched an appeal to the public for assistance in identifying the victim.

His sister, Tonica Inniss, told Guyana Times that she had last seen her brother alive on Wednesday evening at approximately 18:00h.

Due to his work, he often spent extended periods away from home. The family learnt about the accident on Friday when they called his phone to check on his whereabouts. An eyewitness to the accident answered the phone and shared details of what had transpired. Both Inniss's mother and the mother of his child spoke with this eyewitness. (G9)

The vehicle involved in the fatal hit-and-run incident, PMM 8295, has since been found, and the driver is in custody. However, the identity of the victim, a male of East Indian descent, remains unknown.

The accident took place at around 22:30h, and the man was found unconscious on the roadway with visible injuries to his body. Concerned residents notified the Police, leading to the mobilisation of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) for assistance.

The injured man was then transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) where, upon arrival, an examination revealed the extent of the victim's injuries, including a fractured right foot and various other bodily traumas. His condition was deemed critical, and despite efforts of the medical team at the GPHC, the man succumbed to his injuries.

New tourist facility opens in Berbice

With unique activities such as ziplining and features such as a petting zoo, a newly-opened facility is hoping to dominate the local tourism industry and provide a higher level of service to Guyanese and foreigners.

The new facility is situated at Gangoo Creek on the East Bank of Berbice, Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne), about 15 miles outside of New Amsterdam.

It sits on 14 acres of prime land adjacent to the main access road.

J&J Fun Park is owned by Guyanese Fitz Joseph.

“The J&J is the initials for my kids,” he explained to Guyana Times.

The facility has a wide variety of activities for kids and adults. Joseph ex-

plained that the facility offered both indoor and outdoor activities and is safe for kids.

“We have darts which are magnetic for the kids; we also have bowling, basketball and volleyball. We also have football for the kids, badminton for adults and corn hole,” Joseph said as he listed a few of the activities for visitors.

Waterslides, a trampoline and seesaws are also included.

J&J Fun Park also offers a nature walk and a trip to its farm, where visitors can eat fresh fruits as they experience the farm which has a variety of fruit trees.

Being the owner of the farm and being a fun person, he hosted numerous fun activities at the farm

and invited many friends. Others also went to the farm from time to time to participate in fun activities. According to Joseph, based on the popularity of his farm as a destination, he decided to open the fun park.

“We are talking about

that they can enjoy it, not just us alone,” he related.

Currently, just over two acres of land is being utilised.

20 persons living with disabilities certified, ready for employment

Multilateralism critical for fight against global issues – Todd

Underscoring the efficacy of multilateralism in combating the world’s greatest challenges, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Hugh Todd posited that there must be a “collective effort” in addressing the world’s major challenges.

Minister Todd made these comments while participating in a panel discussion hosted by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) based in Delhi, India.

To this end, Minister Todd lauded India’s efforts to contribute to the fight against a number of global issues such as climate change, COVID-19, and debt crises faced by other countries.

Determined to make valuable contributions to the workforce and not allow their conditions to limit their potential, some 20 youngsters have graduated from the Health Ministry’s National Vocational Training Centre for persons with disabilities, also known as the Open Doors Centre.

The graduates completed the two-year training in courses including beauty care, garment and craft, carpentry, and information technology (IT), according to the Department of Public Information (DPI).

The centre which focuses on providing training opportunities for adults aged 1645 held its 11th graduation ceremony at the Ministry, Brickdam, Georgetown on Wednesday.

Best graduating participant Gabriel Gilkes reflected on his life story before he registered at the centre, noting that the journey has allowed him to start to achieve his fullest potential.

“Three, four years ago, I would not have attempted a lot of those soft skills that I have gotten and have gained from what the institution would have instilled in me… I thank God for using this institution to help me fulfill my potential,” Gilkes declared.

Health Ministry

Permanent Secretary Malcolm Watkins who represented Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony expressed satisfaction with the milestone achieved by the graduates. He also applauded the support system that was provided to the trainees during their stint at the institution.

He noted that the Government acknowledged that persons living with disabilities are given equitable and fair treatment and support systems to help them achieve their goals.

“As we expand our support, we intend to commit closely with other stakeholders and continue to improve our collaborations with the other stakeholders nationally and individually, to find ways to provide more support as we move forward in the coming years,” he assured.

He added, “I can tell you, being here, working with the leadership here and with the guidance of the Government, we truly believe this motto and we do everything, every day to make decisions that are important to persons living with disabilities.”

Meanwhile, Director of Rehab Services, Dr Ariana Mangar charged the graduates to continue to make their families and the institution proud as they venture into the world of work.

The Open Doors Centre was established in 2001, under the auspices of a project instituted and funded by Associazione Italiana Amici de Raoul Falleau (AIFO), an Italian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

The centre also assists the trainees in finding jobs or furthering their studies through enrolment in other institutions like the Carnegie School of Home Economics and Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC). For further information feel free to contact the centre on 219-2737 0r 2192753.

“If you look at human activity over the decades and how many of the industrialised countries would have advanced their economies and done well for themselves, now that we are at a period where Mother Nature is crying out and we have to respond, it requires a collective effort,” he said in an article published by the Department of Public Information (DPI).

“If you look at what we have gone through in the pandemic…you look at the conflict in Ukraine and the G20 presidency, India has emerged as a powerful leader and policy maker. That is what you need, leadership. India has been providing that leadership and people are following,” the Foreign Affairs Minister explained.

Meanwhile, he noted Guyana’s contributions to the fight against climate change, indicating that the country was forced to be “punching above our weight” because other countries have not been rising to the occasion.

“We are very low emitters, but we are punching above our weight within the multilateral system in terms of commitments. It requires a level of humility and an understanding that we all have to be involved,” Minister Todd pointed out.

The relationship between India and Guyana ever since

the independence of Guyana in May 1966 has been close and cordial with a high degree of understanding.

The High Commission of India to Guyana’s website states that the warmth in the relationship “remains unaffected” with changes in Governments either in India or Guyana.

ECD man convicted of child rape

ECD man convicted of child rape

A jury has found an East Coast Demerara (ECD) man guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl, and he has been remanded to prison pending sentencing on Tuesday afternoon.

On October 26, trial Judge Jo-Ann Barlow, presiding in the Sexual Offences Court in Demerara, will sentence 36-year-old Nelroy Barry, also known as "Cock," for the offence.

Calvin Reid, a mason and resident of the East Coast of Demerara, Barry's co-accused, will now have to stand trial again after the jury returned a hung verdict in relation to the charge against him. Over the past few days, Barry and Reid had been on trial for the crime. Barry was represented by Attorney-at-Law Tamieka Clarke, while Reid was rep-

resented by Attorney-at-Law

Teriq Mohammed. State Counsel Latifah Elliot was part of the prosecuting team.

The prosecutor said Barry took the young girl to his place of abode and sexually assaulted her. It is alleged that on the day in question, January 7, 2020, Reid also

sexually assaulted the girl at Barry’s residence, before Barry did so for a second time. Both men were arrested and charged after the Police received a report of the incident. Reid will continue to have pre-trial freedom while he waits a new trial.

Meanwhile, on November 15, 2021, Barry was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly attacked his former girlfriend from behind, chopping her to her head and left hand. He was not required to plead to this charge, which alleges that at some time in April 2021, at Ann’s Grove, ECD, he unlawfully wounded the woman with intent to commit murder. After returning from the interior, he was arrested for the crime only on November 12, 2021. This publication is unaware of the legal status of this case. (G1)

Regional Over 10,000 displaced in Haiti after violence escalates north of capital

More than 10,000 persons have fled their homes in parts of Haiti’s central department, the United Nations’ migration agency said on Wednesday, after a series of gang attacks in recent days including in a hospital north of the capital.

Under-resourced Police have struggled with heavily armed gangs who gained territory and massively expanded their influence over the past year, forming powerful alliances notably in the capital Port-au-Prince.

Fighting has expanded in recent months, spiking in regions such as Artibonite and the Central Department.

Early on Tuesday, armed men attacked the University Hospital of Mirebalais, one of the country’s main health centres. Days earlier, suspected gang members attacked a Police station in nearby Saut-d’Eau.

Haiti’s top private healthcare provider Zanmi Lasante issued a statement shared by local media condemning the “brutal attack which violates the moral treaty which considers hos-

pitals as neutral sites, leaving patients and medical personnel deeply traumatised”.

No persons were immediately reported killed or injured from the attack, but unverified videos on social media showed chaotic scenes with broken windows and hospital walls riddled with bullet holes.

Violence has spiked since last week, when the leader of the powerful G9 gang alliance Jimmy “Barbecue”

Monterrey gangs: Bodies dumped in Mexico’s business capital

The mutilated remains of up to a dozen people were found strewn across the northern Mexican city of Monterrey on Tuesday.

Messages left with the remains suggest the victims were killed as part of a purge within a gang.

Monterrey is the industrial and business capital of Mexico and the seat of many large companies.

Earlier this year, Tesla announced it would open a huge car factory in the city in 2024.

The discovery of the dismembered bodies at seven separate sites across Monterrey came after a drop in the level of violence in recent years.

their enemies.

Local media said that next to the remains found on Tuesday there were signs referring to attempts to infiltrate a cartel.

The Northeast Cartel, which is based in Tamaulipas, is thought to have emerged from the Zetas crime syndicate.

Cherizier said he would overthrow the Government by force and called a broader truce of metropolitan area gangs through a new alliance called “Living Together.”

The announcement sparked internal feuds. Late on Tuesday the leader of a G9 alliance gang was killed by other alliance members near Fontaine Hospital in the capital, according to local media reports. (Excerpt from Reuters)

Brazil’s farm sector battles Supreme Court on Indigenous land rights

Stung by a Supreme Court rejection of their proposal to restrict recognition of Indigenous lands, Brazil’s congressional farm lobby on Wednesday managed to swiftly pass a bill to counter the top court’s decision.

The caucus representing agribusiness is also backing bills to amend the Constitution that guarantees the right of Indigenous people to their ancestral lands, its president Pedro Lupion told Reuters.

“We will press ahead with our plans for legislation no matter what the court does,” he said in an interview on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court last week voted against establishing a cut-off date for new reservations on lands Indigenous people did not live on by October 5, 1988 when the Constitution was enacted.

A bill fixing the 1988 deadline for land claims was approved by 43-21 votes in the Senate on Wednesday, a few hours after it was passed by the Constitution and Justice Committee.

The offensive could

deepen a divide between a conservative-led Congress and a Supreme Court that many lawmakers criticise for judicial over-reach.

The number of land conflicts has increased as Brazil’s rapidly expanding agricultural frontier advances into the Amazon region. Across Brazil, Indigenous communities claim land that farmers have settled and developed, in some cases for decades.

In a statement, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples said that the bill

is unconstitutional as it contradicted the Supreme Court’s ruling and trampled on the rights of Indigenous people by affecting its social organisation.

Lupion said bill PL 490, which has also passed the lower chamber, faces a probable veto by leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has promised to legalise some 300 reservations awaiting recognition and protection by the State. (Excerpt from Reuters)

In the early 2010s, a number of drug cartels fought for control of the city.

In their attempts to scare their rivals, the cartels would hang bodies from bridges or leave body parts next to signs warning off

The messages were signed by the Cartel del Noreste (Northeast Cartel).

Police did not confirm the veracity of the messages, but said that a cartel from neighbouring Tamaulipas state was behind the grisly dumping of the bodies.

Its leader, Juan Gerardo Treviño Chávez, was arrested by the Mexican security forces in March 2022 and deported to the United States.

It appears that since then, rival gangs have tried to infiltrate the cartel he led. (Excerpt from BBC News)

Dominica elects 1st female Head of State

Dominica on Wednesday elected its first-ever female Head of State, overshadowed by opposition attempts to scuttle the “historic moment” and raising the possibility of the matter ending up before the courts there.

By a margin of 20-5, Dominican lawmakers –six Government Ministers and one Opposition legislator were absent for various reasons – voted in support of 58-year-old Sylvanie Burton, the Government’s nominee, who had faced a challenge from Anette Sanford.

She will be sworn in on October 2.

Ironically, both wom-

en are from the Kaliangoo Territory, where the descendants of the country’s Indigenous people, the Caribs, still reside.

But the victory was overshadowed by an attempt by Opposition legislator Sean Douglas, who questioned whether Burton had in fact met the requirements under the Dominica Constitution to be nominated, claiming that she was still employed as a senior public servant.

“The nominee has engaged in certain acts which offend the Public Service Act, in which if she is President, warrant her removal from office and as such, the House should not proceed on the election of

the President as Burton being a candidate or nominee,” he said.

But Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who lamented the fact that there had not been a consensus in the nomination for the position of the island’s 12th Head of State since independence in 1978, questioned the facts being presented by Douglas.

“All of what the Senator would have said in his arguments to the House to indicate that the candidate Burton is not qualified cannot stand,” he said, telling legislators that she had retired from the public service on September 11 this year.

T&T girl, 3, dies days after falling into boiling pot of peas

Even with her little body wrapped in bandages after suffering second-degree burns when she fell into a pot of boiling lentils, little Shazade Simon tried to console her worried relatives.

“Allyuh come back later, don’t cry,” the three-yearold Shazade could be heard saying in a video recording which has been shared on social media.

At the time, the child was sitting up on a bed at the San Fernando Teaching Hospital.

Unfortunately, Shazade died at the hospital on Monday, six days after the

incident, leaving relatives shocked and heartbroken.

Shazade was accustomed to going to her grandfather’s vegetable and market shed at Morne Roche Road, Williamsville.

When her mother, Andelle Lazar, took her to the stall last Wednesday, a pot of lentil peas was being cooked on a ‘firecracker’ on the ground at the back of the shed.

In an interview at the stall, Shazade’s aunt Marisa Brizan defended the family, saying the child was not left unsupervised.

She said there were several people in the shed and

as soon as it happened, someone picked Shazade up, wrapped her in a damp towel and she was taken to the hospital.

Brizan said they believe her niece accidentally stumbled and fell into the pot.

Shazade’s death came a day after five-year-old D’amari Jeffrey drowned at the Fun Splash Water Park in Debe, prompting public criticism of the child’s mother and more public debate on whether parents are paying due care and attention to their children.

Iraq fire: Around 100 killed in blaze at wedding party in Qaraqosh

Oil climbs 3% as steep US crude stocks draw adds to supply concerns

At least 94 persons have died and 100 others are injured after a fire broke out during a wedding in Iraq's biggest Christian town on Tuesday night.

Hundreds were celebrating at a banqueting hall in Qaraqosh, in Nineveh province, when the tragedy happened.

Witnesses and civil defence officials said the fire was sparked by fireworks set off as the bride and groom danced.

Highly flammable metal and plastic composite panels that covered the hall fuelled the blaze, they added.

Security forces arrested 10 of the venue's staff, its owner and three people in-

volved with the fireworks on Wednesday.

In the afternoon, hundreds of mourners attended a funeral for more than 40 of the victims at a cemetery in Qaraqosh, which is also known as al-Hamdaniya and Bakhdida. Some carried portraits of their deceased loved ones.

In an address, Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako described the fire as a "complete and total catastrophe", according to Iraqi Kurdish news agency Rudaw.

Civil defence officials told BBC News Arabic that both the groom and his bride survived, though initial reports said they had

Ukraine strikes deep inside Crimea, cuts through Surovikin Line

Oil prices surged three per cent on Wednesday to the highest settlement in 2023, after a steep drop in US crude stocks compounded worries of tight global supplies.

Brent crude futures closed up US$2.59, or 2.8 per cent, at US$96.55. It breached US$97 a barrel during the session.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed US$3.29, or 3.6 per cent, to US$93.68. The session high was over US$94.

US crude stocks fell by 2.2 million barrels last week to 416.3 million barrels, Government data showed, far exceeding the 320,000-barrel drop analysts expected in a Reuters poll.

Crude stocks at the Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub, delivery point for US crude futures, fell by 943,000 barrels in the week to just under 22 million barrels, the lowest since July 2022, data showed.

"The market is being led up by storage numbers as we are getting to the minimum operational inventories at Cushing," said Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates.

Stockpiles at Cushing have been falling closer to historic low levels due to strong refining and export demand, prompting concerns about quality of the remaining oil at the hub and whether it will fall below minimum operating levels.

Prices fell last week, but were rallying again as markets worried about tight supplies heading into winter, following production cuts of 1.3 million barrels a day to the end of the year by Saudi Arabia and Russia of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies known as OPEC+.

"Until a decision to raise production is made, the global energy market will remain tight," Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, said.

The tight supply was reflected in time spreads with front month Brent futures trading at a US$42.28 premium over the second month, its highest since October, while on WTI futures, the front month traded at a US$2.43 premium to the second month, the highest since July 2022.

WTI's discount to Brent also hit its narrowest since late April.

"The market is overbought and a correction is definitely needed," said Dennis Kissler, Senior Vice President of Trading at BOK Financial.

Potentially adding to supply tightness, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his overnment to ensure retail fuel prices stabilise after a jump caused by an increase in exports.

In response, his Deputy Prime Minister cited proposals to restrict exports of oil products purchased for domestic use.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas released a survey showing oil and gas activity in three key energy producing US states has been rising with the latest jump in energy prices. (Reuters)

Ukraine scored devastating deep strikes against Russian-occupied Crimea in the 83rd week of the war, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy toured Europe and the United States picking up pledges of new longrange weapons and financing.

At the same time, Ukrainian and Western sources confirmed that Ukrainian troops had broken through the first and strongest line of Russian

defence on the southern front, known as the Surovikin Line after the general who devised it. That success could accelerate their march towards the cities of Tokmak and Melitopol.

Ukraine attacked three targets in occupied Crimea in as many days, honing its signature tactic of using a wave of drones to destroy or distract air defences, followed by a wave of missiles. Satellite images showed that attacks destroyed half

Canada's Trudeau apologises after Nazi veteran praised in Parliament

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday formally apologised after the Speaker of the House of Commons praised a Nazi veteran in the chamber while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was present.

Trudeau also said Ottawa had already reached out to Kyiv and Zelenskiy through diplomatic channels to apologize.

Anthony Rota, who publicly acknowledged veteran Yaroslav Hunka in the House last Friday and called him a hero, quit as Speaker of the chamber on Tuesday and said he bore sole responsibility for what happened. Hunka, 98, was a Polish-born Ukrainian who served in one of Adolf

Hitler's Waffen SS units during World War Two. He later emigrated to Canada.

Russia says the incident backs up its assertion that the war in Ukraine aims to "denazify" the country, a charge Kyiv and Western allies say is baseless.

"On behalf of all of us in this House, I would like to present unreserved apologies for what took place on Friday and to President Zelenskiy and the Ukrainian delegation for the position they were put in," Trudeau told the House on Wednesday.

"For all of us who were present to have unknowingly recognised this individual was a terrible mistake and a violation of the memory of those who suffered grievously at the hands of the Nazi regime."

The most crippling attack came on September 22. Ukraine hit the Black Sea Fleet command headquarters and claimed to have killed 34 officers.

Travis King in US custody after North Korea expulsion

US soldier Travis King, who fled from South Korea to North Korea in July, is in American custody after being expelled by Pyongyang, officials say.

Private King was transferred into US custody in China before being flown to a US military installation.

The 23-year-old reconnaissance specialist illegally crossed into North Korea in July.

North Korean media said he had fled because of "inhuman treatment" and racism within the US military.

A senior administration official said on Wednesday that after months of "intense diplomacy", King had been returned to US hands and had spoken to his family.

"We can confirm Pvt King is very happy to be on his way home, and he is very much looking forward to reuniting with his fami -

ly," the official said.

"We are going to guide him through a re-integration process that will address any medical and emotional concerns and ensure we get him in a good place to reunite with his family."

The official added that the US made no concessions to secure his release.

After being met by US officials in the Chinese border city of Dandong, Pvt King was taken by a state department aircraft to a US airbase in South Korea.

He was expected to return to US soil on Wednesday afternoon, according to state department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Earlier on Wednesday, North Korea's State-run news agency said the country had decided to remove Pvt King, without offering further details.

Bermuda, Dominican Republic down Barbados and St Vincent in League B CONCACAF Road to W Gold Cup…

The spotlight was on Group C of League B in the 2023 Road to the Concacaf Women's Gold Cup tournament on Tuesday night.

Bermuda sits atop Group C with two victories to start its campaign. The Dominican Republic picked up its first victory, but Barbados maintains second place in the group on goal differential, while St Vincent and the Grenadines will use the break to reassess and return stronger during the October international fixtures.

SVG vs Bermuda

Bermuda took a 4-0 victory over Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The home side generated a good chance to take the lead early in the 11th when a corner kick provided a menacing opportunity, but Dionte Delpeche could not connect with Asha Richards.

Jya Ratteray Smith took the lead for the visitors in the 14th, after connecting off a long pass into the box from Khyla Brangman. Smith doubled the lead by completing her brace in the 39th, after Symira Lowe Derrell won a contested ball in midfield to provide the assist.

Eva Frazzoni added a third goal in the 78th, after connecting with a pass down

the right flank from Trinae Edwards.

Khyla Brangman extended the lead to four in the 86th from the penalty spot. Frazzoni was taken down on the previous play.

The Dominican Republic earned a 3-0 victory over Barbados at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Damian Lillard will be traded to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of a threeteam deal including the Phoenix Suns, CBS Sports' Bill Reiter has confirmed.

The Portland Trail Blazers will receive Jrue Holiday, Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara and draft capital in the deal, while Phoenix lands Jusuf Nurkic, Grayson Allen, Nassir Little and Keon Johnson.

The move represents a significant surprise for Lillard, who has spent the offseason pushing for a trade to Miami Heat specifically. Instead, he lands with the Bucks more than two months after making a trade

Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq to retire from ODIs after Cricket World Cup 2023

That also prompted him to take a break from the 50-over format in 2022, so he could prepare “mentally and physically” for last year’s T20 World Cup.

Here are the details of the blockbuster deal:

* Bucks receive: Damian Lillard

* Blazers receive: Jrue Holiday, Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara, Bucks' 2029 first-round pick (unprotected), swap rights on Bucks' 2028 and 2030 picks

* Suns receive: Jusuf Nurkic, Grayson Allen, Nassir Little and Keon Johnson.

The Blazers are expected to trade the veteran All-Star Holiday to another team, as Portland begins a rebuild around No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson.

so aggressive that the NBA needed to send out a memo to all 30 teams stating that it had "advised Goodwin and Lillard that any future comments, made privately to teams or publicly, suggesting Lillard will not fully perform the services called for under his player contract in the event of a trade will subject Lillard to discipline by the NBA."

In the end, the Bucks defied Lillard's wish to land with the Heat and made the trade themselves. Lillard posted on social media that he plans to eventually address Blazers fans "truthfully."

Afghanistan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq has announced that he will retire from ODIs following the conclusion of the upcoming World Cup in India.

Naveen, who made his international debut

in 2016, has represented Afghanistan in seven ODIs, and taken 14 wickets at an average of 25.42. While he continues to be a key player for the country in T20Ishe has played 27 matches in the format - Naveen has not played an ODI since 2021.

Earlier this month, Naveen was named in Afghanistan’s 15-member squad for the World Cup, marking the first time he was included in the ODI fold in more than two years. He is expected to form part of their pace attack, along with Fazalhaq Farooqi, Abdul Rahman, and allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai.

Naveen, 24, said in a message on social media

that it wasn’t an “easy decision” to retire, but it is one that he made in order to “prolong my playing career”.

“It has been an absolute honour to represent my country, and I would like to announce my retirement from the ODI format at end of this World Cup, and will continue to wear this blue jersey in T20 cricket for my country,” he said. “It hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but to prolong my playing career, I had to take this tough decision. Would like to thank the Afghanistan Cricket Board and all my fans for their support and unwavering love.”

Afghanistan are set to begin their World Cup campaign against Bangladesh on October 7 in Dharamsala.

Lillard, a seven-time AllStar, can provide the Bucks with tremendous spacing, thanks to his infamous long-range shooting. Only Stephen Curry and James Harden can top the 2,387 three-pointers he's made since entering the league. While his career mark of 37.2% from long range isn't necessarily elite on paper, he's consistently had to take difficult shots because of the personnel around him.

Now he'll join Giannis Antetokounmpo, who demands as much attention in the paint as any player in the league, and regularly draws double and triple-teams on drives. Lillard and Khris Middleton should be able to feast on open looks for a dynamic Bucks squad that'll be tough to stop when healthy in 2023-24.

When Lillard initially asked for a trade in July, it quickly became clear that he had his heart set on a single team: the Miami Heat.

"Truthfully, he wants to play in Miami. Period," Lillard's agent, Aaron Goodwin, told the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson. The stance was

Now the Heat are left to pick up the pieces after an offseason built around a trade they ultimately couldn't make. Miami still has two open roster spots that it was likely holding for the sake of flexibility in a possible deal. The Heat lost key free agents Max Strus and Gabe Vincent in July, and with pretty much every notable free agent off the board, it has no means of replacing them externally.

Miami's push for a third Finals trip in five years just grew significantly more difficult.

The Blazers, meanwhile, will finally move on after more than a decade with Lillard as their franchise player. In 11 seasons, Lillard guided the Blazers to the playoffs eight times. They never made it beyond the Western Conference Finals, though, and after two years in the lottery, it was finally time for the two sides to part. Portland will now rebuild around Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, while Lillard starts the next phase of his career in Milwaukee. (CBS Sports)

Guyana’s senior women’s national football team the Lady Jaguars have, over the past week, suffered mixed for tunes in their opening games of the CONCACAF Road to W Gold Cup tournament.

While they suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Antigua last Wednesday, the Lady Jags rebound ed with a com manding 5-0 win over Dominica on Sunday last.

New to the Lady Jags set-up, Head Coach Omar Khan shared thoughts on his first win with the team, and a few hiccups he noticed along the way.

“Winning always feels good. Our feeling was that the first match prepa ration was a little bit too tight to prepare the team, so we got surprised by Antigua a little bit. I think we made a good come back, learning from that game. I think we did well, especially in the first half,” Khan shared.

About the Lady Jags’ second half performance, in which they scored a solitary goal, Khan said, “It’s always difficult, because you see it on every level that,

after a good first half, the opponent also does something. They go more defensively to that the Lady Jags could have been more solid as a unit had they not missed

“We missed more than 4 or 5 players at the moment, experienced players. So, we’re also in a little bit of a transition, giving younger players a chance. It’s a short period, difficult in one win dow to play the way we want to play and new players that haven’t had any experience with this team on this level. So, it’s a lot coming in

Coach Khan referenced, shared a bit about her role as a senior player in getting the fresh faces ready for competition. Sandiford shared, “I think just leading through example, especially when we’re on the field; just keep holding everybody accountable to the rules that we have set in place for the team, and the expectation that we have as a player for Guyana. And it hasn’t been difficult, everyone is firing on a 100, ready to represent our country with everything they have. So, it’s not a difficult job, it is an important one, and we just have to be consistent in keeping the expectation and level high,” The Lady Jags Captain/ Goalkeeper mainThe Lady Jags will next come up against Suriname on

Nepal’s batters smashed a number of records in the opening match of the Men’s Asian Games against Mongolia in Hangzhou, in a record 273run win. Here is a quick look at some of the major records broken by them.

0 - Number of times a team had scored 300 in a men’s T20 innings before this. Nepal’s 314 for 3 against Mongolia in the Asian Games is the first such instance. The highest T20 total before this was 278, scored by Afghanistan against Ireland in 2019, and by Czech Republic against Turkey, also in 2019. These are also the highest totals in men’s T20 internationals.

34 - Balls taken by Nepal’s Kushal Malla to reach his hundred, which is the fastest in T20Is. The previous record of 35 balls was jointly held by David Miller, Rohit Sharma and Czech Republic’s Sudesh Wickramasekara.

South Africa in Centurion earlier this year. These are also the most in any T20 match, beating the 23 sixes hit by Balkh Legend batters against Kabul Zwanan in the Afghanistan Premier League in 2018.

19y, 206d - Malla’s age on Wednesday, making him the second-youngest batter to score a century in men’s T20Is. The youngest is Gustav McKeon of France, who scored two centuries before turning 19 in July 2022.

56 - Percentage of Mongolia’s total to have come through extras - 23 of the 41 all out were extras. It is the highest proportion of team runs to have come via extras in a men’s T20I innings (min: five overs bowled). Several Guyana/West Indies marquee players will be on show as they seek to solidify spots in the Guyana Harpy Eagles team. Guyana is on a mission for a clean sweep of regional senior male tournaments, having won the West Indies Championship 4-Day tournament in April, while the Guyana Amazon Warriors have won the just concluded Republic Bank Limited Caribbean Premier League (RBL CPL) title.

Some of the Warriors who will suit up for their respective counties include Shimron Hetmyer, Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd, Kevlon Anderson, Shamar Joseph, Kevin Sinclar, Ronsford Beaton, and Chandrapaul Hemraj, to name a few. The electrifying Junior Sinclair has been appointed captain of the GCB Select XI, while Christopher Barnwell will serve as his deputy, where he is expected to give guidance and support to young Sinclair and co.

Saturday’s opening round will see longtime rivals Demerara and Berbice getting the action under-

way. Berbice will be led by the Caribbean’s leading wicket-taker Veerasammy Permaul, who will have West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd as his deputy. A strong Berbice county team would also rely on the talents of Sinclair, Anderson, Joseph, Hetmyer, Johnathan Foo, Nial Smith, Clinton Pestano, Rampertab Ramnauth and Anthony Bramble. Led by Tevin Imlach, Demerara would be banking on the services of current Test opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul, while former West Indies players Sherfane Rutherford and Chandrapaul Hemraj would help shepherd a young corps featuring Guyana’s future stars in Matthew Nandu, Mavendra Dindyal, Akshaya Persaud, Qumar Torrington and oth-

ers.

Following Saturday’s opening match, the second match of round 1 would be continued on October 1st with more intense cricket ac-

uled to start at 09:00 hours, and will be live streamed on the GCB Facebook page. The Demerara players, including the reserves and those named in the GCB Select XI, are asked to report to GCC at 12:30h on Wednesday, September 27, for training session.

…Hetmyer, Shepherd, Motie, Rutherford, Chanderpaul, Sinclair among stars to feature CWI President Shallow debunks claims that Barbados would host ICC World Cup finals

…Guyana among 3 in bid for final

In a potentially embarrassing development for Barbados Cricket, Dr Kishore Shallow, President of Cricket West Indies (CWI), has poured cold water on a pronouncement from Conde Riley that Barbados has been selected to host the 2024 ICC World Cup final.

Already having the capability to host several sporting disciples, such as cricket and table tennis among others, the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) has now added lawn tennis to its complement of sporting facilities.

While the venue at Carifesta Avenue Georgetown was previously equipped with a tennis court decades ago, and had even had a lawn tennis club, the space was used as a parking lot up until recent years. Now a spanking new court, named in honour of former player Dane Gobin, was unveiled on Tuesday evening.

In remarks, the guest of honour Dane Gobin shared about the benefits of the sport, and how he hopes the court would be utilised.

“Tennis also builds character and fosters mental fortitude, both of which to this day I still use in my life. Tennis also earned me a

scholarship to Texas, where I started my tertiary education. I would therefore like to encourage all the youngsters out there to get involved in some type of sport; and to the parents, to invest heavily in extra- curricular activities for your children,” he related to the gathering.

Further, Gobin encouraged, “To all the tennis players who will grace this court, I encourage you to make the most of this incredible facility. Challenge yourselves, push your limits and push for greatness, but also remember to enjoy the journey, savour the moments of triumph, and learn from the defeats. Let this court be a place where you will not only improve your tennis skills, but also grow as individuals.”

As told by Everest President Manzoor Nadir, their will to begin refurbishing the Tennis Court in 2019 spurred a number of upgrades around the facili-

ty, including the parking lot, public washrooms and solar lighting.

Cognizant of this, Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) President Cristy Campbell praised the Club for their drive, and offered any help the Association can provide for the sport.

Campbell praised ECC by saying, “I think I can safely say without fear of contradiction that Everest is the

the form of equipment distribution, coaching education, or any other areas that we could collaborate. We stand willing and ready to facilitate and assist you to continue the expansive growth of this club,” she assured.

Much of the Tennis Court project at the Everest Cricket Club was funded by China’s CNOOC.

The International Cricket Council announced last week that seven Caribbean countries, and the United States, will host matches in the prestigious tournament that began in 1975. Dominica, Guyana, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados are the Caribbean countries selected.

Also, in an unprecedented decision, the ICC has said that matches would also be played in Texas, Florida and New York in the United States.

According to reports, Riley, who was recently re-elected to the post of President of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA), declared he was in possession of documentation that said his country would be hosting the finals next summer.

“Based on the documents that Barbados is earmarked from Cricket West Indies and ICC to host the final, a semi-final and a number of games…,” he said.

However, speaking on the Mason and Guest sports talk show in Barbados on Tuesday

night, Dr Shallow debunked those claims, saying, “This committee could only make the recommendation to ICC, and ICC will be meeting in November, right. I’m actually due to attend that meeting. Unless we have a meeting prior, the final scheduled with the finals and semifinals, they’re going to decide that.

“What I can tell you is that Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados all bid for the semifinal and final, because that’s one package. Nothing has been communicated back from ICC to Cricket West Indies.”

The statement from the CWI President has left the Barbados Cricket Association with potential egg on their faces. (Sportsmax)
