Massive infrastructural upgrades for Wakenaam

I

n the coming months, residents on Wakenaam Island in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) will see several developmental projects being undertaken to enhance their lives, President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced.

Speaking during the commissioning of a school in Wakenaam on Tuesday, the Head of State informed that every single road on the island will be upgraded by 2025. He insisted that Government is not sparing any resource in enhancing such public infrastructure.

“In three years, we have spent more than $10 billion on roads here. And let me assure (you) we’re going to fix all the roads in Wakenaam before the end of 2025…We are not sparing the resources.

We are putting the resources to ensure your life gets better, and everybody has to perform,” Ali underscored.

Based on the performance of those at the level of the Regional Administration and Central Government, Ali said, he has “no doubt” that this would be achieved.

To improve water quality and access, residents would also benefit from a new water treatment plant, construction of which would commence next year. Through this project, realized to the tune of $850 million, treated water would be available to every home on the island.

Through the Men on Mission initiative, $2.5 million will be utilized for upgrade to a ground for the benefit of the community.

“We’re going to create a covered shed with an open space for community type of activity, where you can have greater interaction with the community,” Ali said.

Ali told residents that this development is not guesswork, but carefully planned strategies to build Wakenaam “stronger and better than it has ever been”.

Throughout the island, all lands are being utilized, and production is blooming.

“Vibrancy has returned, and it has returned because of staying true to our promise and commitment, understanding that when we came to you to ask for your support, we entered into a social contract with you, and we are fulfilling everything,” he added.

Last year, the President had announced plans to put in place a 750-kilowatt solar-powered system for this island at a cost of US$2.3 million, or GY$460 million.

Noting the island is a predominantly rice farming one, the President had also referenced his Administration’s efforts to reverse the damage to the rice industry that was done by the actions, or lack thereof, of the former Government. (G12)

Blackouts

T

he complaints coming from both private citizens and the business community about the constant power outages and voltage surges have increased again.

In fact, frustrated citizens have taken to social media and the media to publicly express frustration over prolonged periods of blackout in their communities, with the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) doing very little to convince the populace that blackouts would become a thing of the past.

Despite promises from both the previous and present Governments, the nation would benefit from improved electricity supply, consumers are yet to see any measurable progress in relation to an affordable and reliable service.

With the opening up of new housing schemes and numerous developmental projects along with oil and gas support companies around the country, there is an increased demand for electricity, which means that more energy has to be generated to satisfy that demand. If serious efforts are not made to produce more electricity to meet this increasing demand, there would always be pressure on the existing systems, resulting in power surges and extended periods of blackout.

There seems to be some hope, however; with Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar on Monday reiterating what Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo had announced that Government has spent US$27.5 million to procure 17 generator sets that will provide a combined 28.9 megawatts of electricity.

These engines are expected to arrive in Guyana later this month and hopefully bring some much-needed relief to the blackout woes that have hit the nation.

Businesses have been very vocal about the huge negative impact the constant periods of blackout have had on their operations. While it would be difficult to place a monetary figure on the extent of the economic loss resulting from unstable power, it would be correct to say that the losses in terms of downtime and lost business have been quite significant.

In addition to the disruption to manufacturing and trading, among other industries, there is also the disruption to the night-time entertainment industry.

An unstable electricity supply in any country serves as a deterrent to investors. While some large businesses in the manufacturing sector have opted to provide their own independent power supply, small businesses cannot afford to do so, since the use of alternative power supply adds significantly to operating costs.

To help private citizens and small businesses, President Dr Irfaan Ali himself had asked major businesses to assist with “temporary measures” by leaving the grid at peak hours.

It was obvious that these businesses with self-generation capacity would not have adhered since the Government in an effort to bring down the cost of electricity for all consumers removed the excise tax on fuel. This means it was cheaper for them to stay on the grid rather than selfgenerate.

That said, we are not oblivious to the many problems being experienced by GPL. These problems, which include line losses, particularly owing to electricity theft, have been known for decades, and have certainly had a tremendous impact on the company’s ability to provide better services to consumers.

The extent of electricity theft in Guyana is shocking, and GPL must continue to tackle the issue frontally. The costs for stolen electricity are passed down to ordinary consumers, who are made to feel the brunt of such illegal actions. All efforts must, therefore, be made to ensure that persons who are involved in such practices are placed before the courts. No doubt, once such issues are addressed, the company would be in a better position to perform better.

It is unacceptable that citizens are still faced with blackouts and voltage surges. In fairness to GPL, it is clear they understand the depth of the problem and how consumers and businesses are affected. However, the company, and by extension the Government, must take the necessary steps to fix the problem of blackouts once and for all. Anything less is unacceptable.

PM Phillips’s address to OAS on border controversy was powerful, persuasive Dear Editor, Our Prime Minister, Hon. Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips, is known for making eloquent speeches, and he did so on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 when he addressed the Organization of American States (OAS) during an Extraordinary Special Session of the Permanent Council.

The meeting was convened at the request of the Government of Guyana to provide an update on the recent developments on the border controversy with Venezuela, which remains an enduring threat to Guyana. In his address to members of the OAS, Prime Minister Phillips has brilliantly highlighted the fact than Guyana is a peaceful nation that respects the rule of law, and that Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo region poses a direct threat to Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

PM Phillips did not mince words when he told the OAS that Venezuela is currently building an airstrip on its border in a zone near to the Essequibo region, where it has significantly increased its military personnels and equipment. He explained that while no explanation about the airstrip has been provided to the Government of Guyana, the intention of Venezuela is to increase its threats to use force, to drive fear in the Guyanese population as well as to undermine and breach international law.

The former Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), who has in-depth knowledge on security-related issues, has voiced Guyana’s concerns about the planned referendum on December 3 with five questions that seek the Venezuelan people’s approval to unilaterally annex Guyana’s territory of Essequibo, instead of complying with its international obligations to respect and accept the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Brigadier Phillips further informed the OAS that once nearly 11 billion barrels of oil resources have been discovered in the Essequibo region, Venezuela intensified its campaign of

intimidation and threats to use force to annex Essequibo and discredit the 1899 Arbitral Award.

According to Prime Minister Phillips, question five on the referendum is the most disturbing, in that it proposes the creation of the Venezuelan State of Essequibo and an accelerated plan to grant Venezuelan citizenship and identity cards to the Guyanese population living in the region. Not only was the Prime Minister critical of all the questions, but he was very explicit and forceful in condemning the Maduro regime for its malicious and sinister intent to obtain responses from ordinary Venezuelans who may or may not be fully aware of, or acquainted with, the issue to support the Venezuelan Government’s decision to abandon the current judicial proceedings before the ICJ and resort to military measures to resolve the border controversy.

In putting forth Guyana’s case, Prime Minister Phillips candidly told the Permanent Council of the OAS that the Government and people of Guyana are attentive and vigilant of the intentions of the Maduro regime’s recent threats to use force to unilaterally annex two-thirds of Guyana’s territory, which would threaten the peace, stability and security not only in Guyana, but also in the entire Caribbean region.

The PM has duly told the OAS Council that there is no ambiguity concerning the facts with the border controversy, because the October 3, 1899 Arbitral Award which has determined the boundaries between the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela continues to be the legally binding instrument that remain in effect.

As of today, this case is actively before the ICJ to have the matter peacefully settled.

The Prime Minister affirmed that following the 1899 Arbitral Award, a Mixed Venezuelan-British Boundary Commission established a map, on January 7, 1905, to demarcate the

boundary between the two countries.

Venezuela agreed with the boundary map, which at the request of General Juan Vincente Gomez, then President of Venezuela, was reissued in 1911 and 1917, and signed by F. Alicantara, the Venezuelan Minister of Internal Affairs.

In the end, Prime Minister Phillips gracefully and sincerely thanked the Secretary General of the OAS, Mr Luis Almagro; Caricom Community; the Commonwealth of Nations; and members of the international community, for their continued advocacy for a peaceful settlement of the border controversy in accordance with international law. Several members of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), as well as the European Union (EU), the United States and Brazil, have reiterated their unwavering and unequivocal support for Guyana and for a peaceful settlement of the controversy.

Meanwhile, Brigadier Phillips praised President Dr Ali for apprising Caricom, the OAS, the Commonwealth of Nations, and Guyana’s international partners on Venezuela’s planned referendum and its threats to use force to unilaterally seize two-thirds of Guyana’s territory.

PM Phillips’s address to the OAS was excellent, his knowledge of the issue was superb, and his explanation was so convincing and superlative that it grabbed the attention of all the attendees, especially the Secretary General of the OAS, Mr Luis Almagro; and the US and EU ambassadors to the OAS, who explicitly and emphatically condemned Venezuela’s illegal actions for escalating tensions in the region known for its peace and tranquility.

They also reaffirmed their steadfast support for Guyana, and for a peaceful settlement of the controversy in keeping with the principles of international law.

News US Govt strengthens vaccine storage in Guyana, donates solar refrigerators T

he United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), demonstrated its steadfast commitment to Guyana's health sector as Ambassador Nicole D Theriot presented 13 solar-powered vaccine refrigerators to the Health Ministry.

The state-of-the-art equipment valued at US$160,000 will be used in health care centres in remote areas of Guyana.

Responding to this need, USAID, through its collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), procured solar refrigerators to maintain the cold chain, thus ensuring the vaccines' potency and reliability.

A release from the US Embassy in Georgetown on Tuesday evening stated that the refrigerators would provide consistent access to vital immunisations, improving equitable health care access, and sig-

nificantly reducing the risk of preventable disease outbreaks. This donation underscores the importance of reliable vaccine storage and will provide significant cost savings by maintaining the viability of vaccines.

During the presentation, Ambassador Theriot said, “These solar-powered refrigerators symbolise our shared vision of reaching every corner of Guyana with essential healthcare services. Together, we continue to work towards a brighter, healthier future for the people of Guyana.”

Contractor to bear costs of correcting Black Bush pump station defects …consultant was not fully paid for botched project – NDIA

T

he contractor at the centre of a row over works done on the $978 million contract for the construction of a pump station at Black Bush Polder, Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne), will be made to stand all the costs for corrective work on the botched project, for which their contract was terminated.

National Drainage and Irrigation Authority’s (NDIA) acting Chief Executive Officer Dave Hicks, in a missive on Tuesday, responded to assertions being made in the public domain, that the botched project will end up costing taxpayers millions.

Further, Hicks denied that Innovative Engineering, the consultant that designed and supervised the works, was fully paid. While Innovative Engineering was certainly paid for the completed design, Hicks noted that they are still owed some money for the supervisory aspect of the project.

“The cost to be incurred for corrective works would be borne by the contractor.

The contractor will only be paid for works executed in accordance with the specifications under the contract after a valuation is completed. As such, the claim about the financial implications on taxpayers is a fallacy,” the NDIA CEO said.

“Therefore, the claims of $21M and $38M, respectively, to be paid and will be spent are spurious.

Factually, since the termination of the Black Bush Polder pump station project, the NDIA has taken control of the site and all materials on site are being checked meticulously by

technically sound, since the experts have advised that the entire structure will have to be replaced.

Further, he had said that as per the contract, the contractor would only be paid for works “satisfactorily completed”.

Pumps play a critical role in preventing floods and are especially important for rice cultivation in Black Bush Polder. It had been reported late last year that even as rice farmers

were preparing their lands for next crop, they were facing challenges with replanting, since several pumps that supply farmers with water were inoperable.

The Ministry of Agriculture received $33.2 billion in Budget 2023. A contract for a pump station at Black Bush Polder was among the several contracts totalling $2.7 billion that were signed in October 2021, by agencies within the Agriculture Ministry. (G3)

As of now, according to NDIA, a final cost that will be incurred is currently being determined between the authority’s technical personnel and the consultant.

Additionally, Hicks stressed that no further monies have been paid to the contractor, nor will they be paid, until the project is completed.

The NDIA boss further contended that terminating the contract was “necessary and unavoidable” and questioned why letters are being written defending the contractor when steps had to be taken by the Government to protect taxpayers’ money.

“There was a failure of the concrete compressive strength test, the slothfulness of the contractor to execute works coupled with a number of other technical issues which led to termination. It is indeed surprising and shortsighted of one of

the missives in insinuating support for a contractor doing faulty works.”

“Further, why are these missives supporting a delinquent contractor when the termination was a necessity rather than complimenting the Hon Minister of Agriculture for taking such a stance since taxpayers’ money would be saved.

Why wasn’t the same position taken by the writer when “fire pumps” were being procured by the past Administration? It seems as though the writer has a hidden agenda.”

NDIA had revealed last month that the $978 million contract for a pump station

in Black Bush Polder had been terminated the month prior for “poor quality and performance of works being executed”. Further, NDIA had said that the project would be retendered.

One of the assertions that were made by Opposition Member of Parliament Ganesh Mahipaul at the time, was that concrete should have been poured over steel rods in the foundation of the project. He had claimed that terminating the contract would cost taxpayers $38 million.

That is why the country we are building tomorrow must be critically interconnected with the education we are delivering today.

That is why you’re seeing so much focus on IT, labs, reading, literacy, more analytical skills, the development of more technical capacity and capability,” said the Guyanese leader.

he Education Ministry on Tuesday commissioned the spanking new Arthurville Primary School on the island of Wakenaam, Region Three (Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara), providing a modernised learning experience for young learners.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand joined President Irfaan Ali to open the doors to the new $84M institution.

She shared that over a long period of neglect, parents complained about their children’s safety as the previous structure was deemed unfit for proper educational sessions. A decision was taken in 2022 that the students should be educated in a safe way, and this kickstarted the project to demolish and reconstruct a new building.

“Once it is good for your children, and once we promise it, we will deliver it…

We will build out a population of people that can participate fully and thrive and benefit from the bounty that is now Guyana. The one sure way of taking your

children out of poverty and making your children better than you are is education,” said Manickchand.

She added that the President, through persistence for education to be prioritised and given paramount importance, is giving hope to parents and students.

“He is giving you the opportunity to make sure these children are better than all of us, the opportunity to make sure that they can live their full

lives to their full potential, and become whatever it is that they want to become, and for sure, to have a life of plenty and not a life of want, to be able to participate fully all over Guyana.”

According to Manickchand, the idea is to equip people across the country with opportunities to allow them to thrive and utilise their full potential.

ovin James of Charity Extension Scheme, Essequibo Coast appeared on Monday before Matthews Ridge Magistrate Dylon Bess to answer a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was not required to plead to the charge, laid under Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02. However, he was granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

Access Road in the North West District, and involved an unregistered ATV driven

by James. Nigel Knights, a pillion rider on the ATV, died in the incident.

The ATV was reportedly speeding down a hill when James lost control of the vehicle and it collided with motor lorry GZZ 4598, at the time being driven by Ryan Van Lange, 38, of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Knights was one pillion rider on the ATV, the oth-

er was 39-year-old Leslie Norton of Highma Top Backdam, NWD. The collision tossed Knights, Norton and James off the ATV and onto the roadway, from where Knights was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Port Kaituma District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead while Norton’s condition was deemed serious.

James will make his next court appearance on February 7, 2024. (G12)

Berbice man arrested for squibs, firecrackers in car trunk

R

anks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Monday arrested a man during patrol in Sheet Anchor village, East Canje, Berbice, after he was busted with a quantity of squibs in the trunk of his car.

The officers observed a silver-coloured motor car, PNN 5837, driven by a self-employed man of Whim Village at about 17:00h.

Whatever Mad Maduro and the state organs he controls announce after the “vote”, it would be as illegitimate as Burnham’s purported referendum back in 1978 - which eliminated the referendum necessary to ratify his new constitution that gave him supreme powers!! Burnham announced a 97% approval, while outside observers verified that there was a less that 12% turnout!! But that’s the way with dictators, eh?? Now, some might complain that this ain’t the time to hang Burnham’s dirty bukta in public; but hey!! Not because he was right on the border issue meant he was right about messing with our constitution!!

And that brings us to our troops - which Burnham had built up in the seventies to one of the highest militarycivilian ratios in the world: 1 soldier to every 35 citizens!!

Then there were those Surinamese who had the gall to actually cross the New River in 1969 and occupy that part of our country they claimed as theirs!! Back in 1969, a handful of GDF soldiers and their makeshift “air wing” improvised magnificently and routed the Surinamese soldiers from their camps back across the border. Under the command of Major Roland da Silva, the Chief Pilot, two twin Otters were modified – with a gunner, Hartley Liverpool, strapped in on the front of one of them – and along with 22 troops commanded

The awardees are: high-level Government appointee in Britain, Baroness Valerie Amos; actress CCH Pounder of US TV and cinema fame; flautist Keith Waite; painter Bernadette Persaud; Karateka Shotokan Frank Woon-A-Tai; linguists Jeanette and the late Richard Allsopp; cricket commentator Joseph "Reds" Perreira; businessmen Abdool Sattaur Gafoor and Kenneth Singh; and last but NOT LEAST, cricketer extraordinaire Rohan Kanhai.

Now, that’s quite a list, innit?? And it’s of more than passing interest that most of them are foreign-based!! It’s your Eyewitness’s hope that, with our economy taking off under the oil-fuelled development trajectory under the PPP Government, more Guyanese will be remaining in our dear Mudland for their achievements to help raise our overall standards!! ricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the accounting firm known for its work in Guyana over the years including its valuation of Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) assets back in 2017, has officially set up a local office in Guyana.

While the company had set up an office in Guyana a few years ago, the ceremony officially marked the launch of that office during the company’s end of year cocktail on Monday.

Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, who was present at the ceremony at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston,

on Monday evening, lauded the company for taking the step to open its local office. He further encouraged them to expand their operations, noting that Guyana is eager to welcome investors and that the Government is committed to growing its non-oil economy.

“I urge you to give serious consideration to ramping up your operations in Guyana. Building out a larger footprint in Guyana and building up indigenous capacity in your Guyana office to meet the needs of not only your Guyanese clients, but I anticipate that you will be servicing other

regional clients out of your Guyana office,” the Finance Minister said.

Meanwhile, PwC Guyana’s Managing Partner, Angelique Bart, described the occasion as a celebration of the company’s already established presence in Guyana. She noted that the company wants to serve as a bridge for further investments into Guyana.

Guyanese double murder suspect cuts bandage off foot, escapes

man, who is wanted in both Guyana and neighbouring Suriname for two separate murders, has escaped from authorities in the Dutchspeaking nation.

Jason Isaacs, who has a local address of Bristol Street, East Canje, Berbice, was shot on October 13, in Paramaribo as Police were arresting him for an alleged shooting incident in the country’s capital.

Isaacs was hospitalised at University Hospital, which is also called the Academic Hospital of Paramaribo, since then and last Saturday he escaped.

Information reaching this publication stated that Isaacs, who was purportedly under guard, used a small

hospital unnoticed.

Online news websites in the Dutch-speaking territory reported that Police are on the hunt for Isaacs but they have not reported whether Police have issued a wanted bulletin for the fugitive.

Isaacs reportedly shot and killed 39-year-old Curtis Brown also called “Big” or “Cats”, formerly of Queenstown, Corriverton, Corentyne, Berbice, who was at the time trying to part a fight outside a nightclub on October 13, in Paramaribo, Suriname.

He was reportedly shot in the leg by authorities after he resisted arrest and was subsequently hospitalised.

Proposals received for purchasing natural gas, setting up industries – Bharrat

…says project well advanced, EPC contractors already on site

W

ork is still ongoing on the infrastructure for the gas-to-energy project and already, Government is in receipt of a number of proposals including for the purchase of gas and proposals for the establishment of various industries for the Wales Development Zone (WDZ).

During a recent exclusive interview with this publication, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat provided an update on the Gas-to-Shore Project.

Specifically, Bharrat explained that the Engineering, Procuring and Construction (EPC) contractors have already started their work.

The EPC contractors include Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL), which won a US$159 million contract for the transmission lines and substations’ component of the Gasto-Shore Project.

Last year, the consortium of CH4 Guyana Inc/ Lindsayca Inc emerged out of a competitive process as the winning bid for the US$759 million contract to construct the 300MW Combined Cycle Power Plant and NGL Plant under an EPC contract, which will be supervised by a global supervision firm – Engineers India Limited.

power plant and the NGL plant. That project has progressed significantly. The early works are completed.

The EPC contractors have taken over the site. And the wharf facility is completed.

The laying of pipelines has already started. That project would have progressed significantly already,” Bharrat said.

The Minister further explained that the area around the Wales Development Zone has already been mapped out. Further, a number of proposals have already been received from private developers, including those interested in purchasing gas and launching different industries.

“As to the development around it, the area has been mapped out. So, at some point in time President will

announce the next step of next stage and how we move forward with that. But the priority is power generation.”

“We have received a number of proposals for different industries, different proposals. Proposals for gas, the purchase of gas. So, all of that will be considered,” Minister Bharrat further explained.

Under the gas-to-energy project, an Integrated Natural Gas Liquid Plant and 300-Megawatt Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant will be built. An industrial park, called the Wales Development Zone, will also be built and benefit directly from the gas. It had been announced that the Government would seek proposals for the zone, which will be overseen by the Wales Development Authority.

er plant and NGL plant, the scope of the US$900 million Gas-to-Shore Project, which has a 25-year lifespan, also consists of the construction of 225 kilometres of pipeline from the Liza field in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana, where ExxonMobil and its partners are currently producing oil.

Approximately 220 kilometres of subsea pipelines offshore will run from the Liza Destiny and Unity floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels in the Stabroek Block to the

shore. Upon landing on the West Coast Demerara shore, the pipeline will continue for approximately 25 kilometres to the NGL plant at Wales.

Exxon, with funding from cost oil, is expected to deliver the completed pipeline by the fourth quarter of next year, in order to allow for the commissioning and testing ahead of the power plant coming online by the end of 2024.

The pipeline would be 12 inches wide, and is expected to transport some 50 million standard cubic feet (mscfpd) of dry gas per day to the NGL

plant, but has the capacity to push as much as 120 mscfpd.

The route of the pipeline onshore would follow the same path as the fibreoptic cables, and would terminate at Hermitage, part of the Wales Development Zone (WDZ) where the Gas-to-Shore Project would be housed.

While the Guyana Government would own the 300MW power plant and NGL plant, it would be recruiting an international firm to operate the project to international standards and best practices. (G3)

aroness Valerie Amos, along with world-renowned award-winning actress CCH Pounder will be heading a stellar list of 10 awardees in this year’s conferral of Honorary Degrees by the University of Guyana.

Both women, who have distinguished themselves internationally, were born in Guyana. Baroness Amos of Brondesbury, London, was born in British Guiana [now Guyana]. She is a British politician, the first woman of African Caribbean descent to serve in a British Cabinet and as Leader of the House of Lords (2003–07).

Baroness Amos worked initially for Local Governments in London and then from 1989 to 1994, headed the Equal Opportunities Commission.

In August 1997, she was made a life peer by the then Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair. Baroness Amos served as the Government’s spokesperson for social security, international development and women’s issues

(1998-2001), a Minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with responsibility for Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Britain’s Overseas Territories, and the Commonwealth, Consular and Personnel Affairs. In May 2003, Baroness Amos was appointed International Development Secretary, thus becoming the first black woman to serve in a British Cabinet. Following the death of Lord Williams of Mostyn in September 2003, Amos was named Leader of the House of Lords and Lord President of the Council, a post she held until 2007. She later served as British High Commissioner to Australia (2009–10) and as head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (2010– 15). She became Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. Ramsammy’s Ruminations GFS warns of dangers Guyana stands unconditionally united, and will not be intimidated by Maduro

O

n Monday, November 6, 2023, the Members of Parliament, all of them, stood as one to let Venezuela’s President, Nicolas Maduro Moros, know that each and every Guyanese stands in solidarity as we proclaim that Guyana’s border is a settled matter. Our MPs, on Monday last, when they spoke with one voice, symbolised the unity of our country in declaring Guyana’s border was fully determined by an international treaty in 1899, more than 124 years ago. Thus, when we say not one blade of grass, not one Dr Leslie Ramsammy kiskadee, we mean it. We are ONE GUYANA strong. For us, the Guyanese people, there is no disputed border. We settled it since 1899. The claim made by Venezuela is a wicked, greedy grab for land, and is warmongering. But Guyana is not only united, we will not be intimidated by Maduro.

Maduro refuses to permit the ICJ to adjudicate the legitimacy of Venezuela’s bogus claim because he knows the court has no option but to declare that the border between Guyana and Venezuela was settled in 1899. In the face of this harsh reality, Maduro has conspired to conduct a bogus referendum. He wants the people of Venezuela to approve the forced annexation of Essequibo. The whole world knows that just like he has rigged previous elections, he will intimidate and rig his way to a result he wants in the referendum. The truth is that this bogus referendum is to distract his people and to avoid general elections in Venezuela. Because the whole world is watching him, and because he saw how the whole world stood up and prevented the election to be rigged in March 2020 in Guyana, he knows it would not be easy to rig the general elections in Venezuela when it is held next year. Therefore, Maduro has embarked on a reckless journey of warmongering to defer the elections.

Maduro’s bogus referendum seeks to have Guyanese living in Essequibo be declared Venezuelans. Not one Guyanese living in Essequibo wants Venezuelan citizenship. No Guyanese citizen is even crossing the legal borders to live in Venezuela. But thousands of Venezuelans are crossing the legal borders to enter Guyana and to seek a living in our country. Maduro is being rejected by his own people as they sing “These boots are made for walking” out of Venezuela.

Guyanese honoured and praised President Chavez when he waged a battle against, and dented, poverty in his country. We cheered for him and his people. President Chavez downplayed Venezuela’s claim, and the two countries worked together on development of our peoples. I personally sat in a room when President Chavez declared that pushing the absurd claim is not Venezuela’s priority. Maduro supported that position when President Chavez was alive. The only reason Maduro is wrapping himself with war drums is because he needs a distraction to avoid facing his people in an election.

Maduro is reckless in not recognizing that, in his belligerence against Guyana, he stands alone, totally abandoned by allies who have consistently stood with Venezuela since Hugo Chavez’s days, who still stand with Venezuela as it confronts a US embargo. Not one country, not even the most ardent supporter of Maduro’s regime, has given Maduro support on his reckless referendum.

Russia is busy fighting a war with Ukraine. While Russia has taken time out to denounce Israel and declare its solidarity with the Palestinian people, Russia, an ally of Venezuela, has not come out in support of Venezuela. China and Cuba have given solidarity to Venezuela as Venezuela fights the US embargo. Both these countries have come out in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Neither of these countries has supported Venezuela’s position on Guyana. In fact, these countries, that have given Venezuela unconditional support in the past, have withheld solidarity with Venezuela when it comes to Guyana. All these countries are visible, with strong cooperation and solidarity with Guyana.

While Maduro’s allies have refused to stand with him against Guyana, Caricom, the OAS, the Commonwealth, the UN Secretary General, the EU, and many countries around the world have denounced Maduro’s bogus referendum. Even in Venezuela, many former government leaders have come out condemning Maduro in his reckless warmongering against Guyana. One can say unequivocally that the whole world stands with Guyana against Maduro.

The Guyanese people and the Venezuelan people have embraced each other, and have lived peacefully with each other since the borders were settled in 1899. In our bad day, when Guyanese looked to make a living anywhere outside of Guyana, many of our people found solace and a chance to make a decent living in Venezuela. Largely because of Maduro, whose dictatorship has ruined Venezuela, his country’s people, by the millions, have sought solace elsewhere. Tens of thousands have made their way to Guyana, escaping Maduro. By and large, we, as Guyanese citizens, have welcomed them because we remembered we were once in their shoes.

Guyana is not afraid because we know the truth; we know that our borders are those that were mutually and globally agreed upon in 1899.

We are not intimidated by Maduro’s recklessness and belligerence. On the contrary, Maduro has brought our people to a place where we can unconditionally stand together as one, in absolute unity. Whatever our differences in the Caribbean and in Latin America, we have lived in a zone of peace. In spite of Maduro’s warmongering, our people stand in unity, our region stands in unity, we have no intention of disturbing the peace we have enjoyed as a region living in one of the most peaceful regions in the world. This is our message: you can huff and you can puff, we will not be moved. Not one cuirass we are giving up.

he Guyana Fire Service has issued another warning about the dangers of setting fire to grass and garbage during the dry season, as the most recent of this behaviour has resulted in damages to a property.

The GFS said in a statement it has spent the last three months fighting serious grass and garbage fires across the country, and over the weekend, units all over the coast were constantly engaged in fighting large grass and brush fires.

On Monday, at about 12:28h, another deliberately-set fire got out of control and threatened the New Guyana School as well as houses located in the Floral Park community and neighbouring areas.

The fire eventually spread to a house at Lot 38-39 Houston Estate, Georgetown, and 12 firefighters, along with fire tenders from the West Ruimveldt, Central, and Alberttown fire stations, were all involved in containing and extinguishing the blaze.

One jet was used to put out the fire which had caught on a two-storey wooden-and-concrete house and resulted in severe damage to two metres of wooden shingle roofing.

In total, seven tanks of water were used to extinguish the grass fire, which was eventually extinguished at around 13:20h on Tuesday, after it had reignited.

“The GFS reiterates the importance of practising fire safety during the dry season, when fires are more likely to occur. Our resources are constantly being depleted as we try to respond to, and extinguish, every fire, some of which are solely attributed to some citizens' carelessness and ignorance of the situation at hand.”

Last week, the GFS had found itself stretched thin as it responded to a staggering total of 23 fire reports in one

The recent grass efire which spread out of control and required intervention from the GFS

day, 21 of which were identified as grass or garbage fires. One particularly devastating blaze not only continued to ravage the area, but also engulfed a nearby lumber yard and resulted in losses amounting to millions for the business owner.

Last month, classroom sessions at Canje Secondary School in East Berbice were brought to a halt because of a grass fire which erupted in

close proximity to that educational institution. It was the second such fire to affect the school within days.

Grass fires in particular are notorious for their speed and ferocity. Fuelled by dry conditions and wind, these fires can swiftly cause extensive damage to properties, harm wildlife, and present a significant risk to human safety. Experts emphasize the importance of taking proactive measures

to prevent such incidents, and to respond promptly if a fire does occur.

These fires pose threats to the environment and citizens' health, and can result in death or the destruction of properties. Citizens are being continuously urged to desist from burning grass or rubbish, and to not leave those fires unattended. They are also urged to inform the Fire Service immediately if such fires occur. Flautist and folklorist, Keith Waite, who could not receive his award in 2022, as well as renowned Caribbean linguist duo; Jeanette and the late Richard Allsopp will be conferred at these graduations.

Additionally, this year, three outstanding sportsmen will also be awarded Honorary Doctorates in Sport. These are veteran sports commentator Joseph “Reds” Perreira, internationally-acclaimed karateka Shotokan Frank Woon-A-Tai and legendary Test cricketer Rohan Kanhai from Port Mourant, Berbice.

To round out the list of Honorary Doctorates for this year are two icons of business – international shipping magnate and UG alumnus, Kenneth Singh and manufacturing and construction tzar and philanthropist, Abdool Sattaur Gafoor.

The selections were made over a year-long process and expanded to ten (10) for this 60th anniversary year only.

Nominations for honorary doctorates must be made through a faculty in the University at least one year in advance of the award to allow for the various approval steps and background research to be robustly conducted. Other categories of awards are expected to be made during the course of anniversary year 2023-2024. The University extends congratulations to this year’s awardees.

company, launched a scholarship programme to afford 100 women in the hinterland technical training in the maritime sector,” she is quoted as saying in the DPI report.

he Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha Essequibo Praant in collaboration with the Dharmic Nawajawaan hosted its Inter-Secondary Schools’ Rangoli Competition on Tuesday at the recently constructed Abram Zuil Secondary School, Abram Zuil, Region Two (PomeroonSupenaam).

The competition was hosted ahead of the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, which will be observed on November 12.

During the competition, teamwork and creativity were displayed through the colourful rangolis depicting the message behind the Hindu festival of lights.

The event saw the participation of seven schools

along the Essequibo Coast.

The participating schools were Charity Secondary, 8th of May Secondary, Anna Regina Secondary, Cotton Field Secondary, Abram Zuil Secondary, Johanna Cecelia Secondary and Aurora Secondary School.

After a great display of talent and creativity, the first place in the competition was Aurora Secondary School, with Abram Zuil Secondary School placing second, while Anna Regina Secondary School achieved the third position.

The rangolis were judged based on depiction of the theme, description of the rangoli and interpretation, usage of colours, aesthetics skills and originality.

Meanwhile, President of the Essequibo Dharmic Nawjawaan, Pandit Kaydar Persaud said the activity is part of the GHDS calendar of events that is aimed at bringing the youths together. He added that he is very satisfied that all the secondary schools along the coast have participated in

the event.

Rangoli is a traditional Indian art form where intricate and colourful designs are created on the floor using materials like coloured powders, rice, or flower petals. It is usual-

ly done during festivals and special occasions as a form of decoration. Rangoli holds cultural and religious significance that originated in India, symbolising good luck, prosperity, and the welcoming of guests. It is

also believed to bring positive energy and ward off evil spirits. The designs can vary from simple geometric patterns to intricate motifs and are a beautiful way to celebrate and express creativity.

anadian Hip Hop icon, Maestro Fresh Wes, born Wes Williams to Guyanese immigrants in Toronto, will become the first Hip Hop artiste to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The festivities take place in Halifax, NS during JUNO week, March 20-24, 2024.

The Canadian Music Hall of Fame was established in 1978 by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to honour Canadian musicians for their lifetime achievements in music. Maestro will also perform at this year’s Junos.

“I am honoured to create my first scholarship at this awesome campus. It is my goal to have more black youth interested in trades and be involved in career paths such as welding, carpentry, plumbing, etc.

A sentiment of many, as scholarship applicants have already begun. There is not a shortage of rappers, but there is a shortage of black

youth involved in learning trades,” Maestro commented.

Maestro has always felt that his role is to give back for the success he has been blessed with. In 2016, the NSCC (Nova Scotia Community Colleges) presented Maestro with an honorary diploma based on his positive impact on the community.

His first book, “Stick To Your Vision”(2010) , was mandatory reading for 10th Grade students in the province.

The Wes Williams Project at the Akerley Campus has also inspired several adult students.

he Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) on Tuesday said that it has taken keen note of the public event that promotes the use of alcohol and of the viral Facebook posts and comments that disrespect the reenactment of a Hindu God Vishnu on a motorcade.

Reference, the ERC said, is made to an event entitled “Festival of Lights Linkup” which is scheduled to be held in Charity, Essequibo, on November 13, the date set aside as the National Holiday for Diwali.

The various acts flagged, the ERC noted, are contrary to the observances of Diwali, a Hindu religious holiday set aside for reverence, self-introspection, and worship.

“The ERC is empowered under Article 212D of the Constitution of Guyana to, among other things, “Ensure and create respect for religious, cultural and other forms of diversity in a plural society.”

In this regard, the ERC is conducting a thorough investigation and will take stringent measures to hold those accountable for their acts of religious intolerance,” the release read.

From a religious perspective, Diwali is a festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil but, moreover, it is also a day dedicated to abstinence from meat, alcohol, and vices, the ERC added.

It is calling on all promoters to be more cognisant of the religious insensitivity that comes with promoting events that ven-

erate the consumption of alcohol and partying under the same banner of religious holidays.

The Commission also reminded everyone that Diwali and all other religious holidays are of great spiritual significance and as such, “using these occasions to desecrate the beliefs and practices of our brothers and sisters erodes the moral fibre of our Guyanese society. Let us all do our part to promote harmony and good relations among all the people of Guyana.”

Oil dives 4% to lowest since July on demand worry, strong dollar

il prices fell more than 4% on Tuesday to their lowest since late July, as mixed Chinese economic data and rising OPEC exports eased fears about tight markets and as the dollar strengthened.

Brent crude futures closed below US$84 a barrel for the first time since Hamas Islamists' Oct 7 attack on Israel. The global benchmark settled at US$81.61 a barrel, down US$3.57, or 4.2%, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures settled at US$77.37 a barrel, down US$3.45, or 4.3%.

"Traders will remain on high alert for signs of a wider conflict emerging in the region that could disrupt supplies, but it seems those fears are subsiding," OANDA analyst Craig Erlam said.

A recovery in oil exports from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries also added to the pressure on oil prices, UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said.

"OPEC crude exports are up by about 1 million barrels per day (bpd) since their August low, as a result of seasonally lower domestic demand in the Middle East. It seems it is too much supply to be absorbed by oil consuming nations," Staunovo said.

The premium on front-month loading Brent contracts over ones loading in six months was at a 2-1/2-month low, indicating less concern about supply deficits.

On the demand side, China's crude oil imports in October showed robust growth but its total exports of goods and services contracted at a quicker pace than expected.

"The data signals the continued decline in the Chinese economic outlook driven by deteriorating demand in the country's largest export destination: the West," City Index analyst Fiona Cincotta said.

The US Energy Information Administration now expects total petroleum consumption in the country to fall by 300,000 bpd this year, reversing its earlier forecast of a 100,000 bpd increase.

Fading investor hopes for a peak in global interest rates also helped lift the US dollar from recent lows, making oil more expensive for holders of other currencies.

The US central bank may have to do more to reduce inflation to its 2% target, Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari said.

Investors are awaiting comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, due on Wednesday and Thursday.

"There are concerns in the oil markets about both rising supply and sliding demand," said Mizuho analyst Robert Yawger. "It's certainly not a tight market right now," he added. (Reuters)

Israel previously said it had surrounded Gaza City and would soon attack it to annihilate Hamas fighters who assaulted Israeli towns across the border one month ago.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said Israeli soldiers were operating in the heart of Gaza City. Hamas' most senior leader in Gaza,

Yahya Sinwar, was isolated in his bunker, Gallant said in a televised news conference.

"IDF (Israeli military) forces...came from the north and the south. They stormed it in full coordination between land, air and sea forces," Gallant said.

"They are manoeuvring on foot, armoured vehicles and tanks, along with military engineers from all directions and they have one target - Hamas terrorists in Gaza, their infrastructure, their commanders, bunkers, communications rooms.

They are tightening the noose around Gaza City."

He said that below the city there were kilometres (miles) of tunnels that ran under schools and hospitals and that housed weapons depots, communication rooms and hideouts for militants.

Ukraine war: Grenade birthday gift kills army chief Zaluzhny's aide

grenade given as a birthday present has blown up and killed a close aide of the head of Ukraine's armed forces Valery Zaluzhny.

Maj Hennadiy Chastyakov, 39, had returned to his flat with presents from his colleagues and was opening them with his son when the grenade exploded.

Maj Chastyakov was killed and his 13-year-old

son left seriously wounded.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the boy had started turning the ring on the grenade.

"Then, the serviceman took the grenade from the child and pulled the ring, causing a tragic explosion."

Prosecutors clarified later that he had accidentally set off the grenade while trying to take it away from his son.

The blast has been de-

scribed as a "tragic accident" and the Minister appealed to the public to await the outcome of an official investigation. Police said the explosion in the family flat at Chaiky in the western outskirts of Kyiv had been "as a result of careless handling of ammunition".

But it soon emerged that another five grenades had been found in the flat.

Klymenko said that they

had been a gift from a colleague in the army.

Two similar grenades were later found in a search of the colleague, described as a colonel in the army.

fire in an informal immigrant neighbourhood in the southern Chilean city of Coronel left 14 dead, most of them children, on Monday night, according to local authorities.

Hugo Cuevas, the city's chief prosecutor, said the victims appear to be undocumented Venezuelan immigrants.

"They just arrived, they've been here in Coronel for just a short time, it couldn't be more than a month," said one neighbour, who did not give his name.

Residents of the area, a working-class neighbourhood lined with dirt roads and tin-roofed houses, gathered on Tuesday to watch as investigators poured in and out of the home where the fire broke out.

"One of those who died yesterday, he worked with us," said another resident, who did not give her name.

"We left work, they came home and five minutes later everyone comes running out, because the house caught on fire."

Officials are still confirming the victims' identities and determining the cause of the incident.

Preliminary reports indicated the wooden house was quickly engulfed after a fire from a handmade stove spread.

During an event about the country's new proposed constitution in Santiago, Chilean President Gabriel Boric lamented the fire, saying "it would be good to ask ourselves, in our own speeches and in our actions, how we treat those people who died yesterday".

wo people taking part in an anti-government protest in Panama were shot dead on Tuesday by an unknown assailant, authorities said, aggravating social tension that has welled up since anger over a lucrative mining contract sparked demonstrations.

The deaths come as street protests by thousands of Panamanians during the past weeks over a new mining contract signed with Canadian mining firm First Quantum Minerals spilled into wider discontent with the Government.

One person has been arrested in connection with the deaths, state prosecutors said in a post on social media platform X, without giving further information about the individual.

Road blocks set up by protesters have caused up to US$80 million in daily losses to businesses, according to Panama's association of company executives, with schools

closed nationwide for over a week and more than 150,000 medical appointments missed.

The Association of Teachers of Panama (ASOPROF) said on X that the perpetrator of the shooting is a US citizen, though this could not immediately be confirmed by the authorities.

Officials have urged people to end the protests, though construction workers' and teachers' unions have vowed to continue taking to the streets until the First Quantum contract is annulled.

The new contract, agreed on October 20, was signed into law by Panama's Government, and provides First Quantum a 20-year mining right with an option to extend for another 20 years, in return for US$375 million in annual revenue to Panama.

While the Government has said the new contract offers better terms than the previous one, protesters disagree.

ortuguese Prime Minister António Costa resigned after investigators searched his official residence in an inquiry into alleged corruption.

He said he had not been named as a suspect but believed the inquiry was incompatible with staying in office.

Prosecutors said on Tuesday they were investigating concessions awarded for lithium mines and hydrogen production.

They said detention warrants were issued for five people including Costa's chief of staff, Vítor Escária.

Público newspaper reported that Escária had been detained.

Infrastructure Minister João Galamba has meanwhile been indicted as part of the inquiry into energy deals.

"The dignity of the func-

tions of Prime Minister is not compatible with any suspicion about his integrity, his good conduct and even less with the suspicion of the practice of any criminal act," the Prime Minister said in a televised address on Tuesday.

Costa said he was caught by surprise by the corruption investigation but promised to collaborate with it.

"There is no illicit act that weighs on my conscience, or even any censurable act," he added.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he had accepted the Prime Minister's resignation and summoned political parties for consultations today.

The political crisis unfolded after prosecutors published a statement detailing searches in more than 40 different premises as part of the inquiry.

t one point in the match, Australia were 91 for 7, chasing 292 for a win against Afghanistan. Then Glenn Maxwell ‘Glenn Maxwelled’ his way to a double-century, and not only did they win the game, but they also sealed their place in the World Cup semi-finals.

After Ibrahim Zadran became Afghanistan's first-ever centurion in World Cups, Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai shredded Australia's top order as they threatened to script a famous win at the Wankhede.

But Maxwell intervened with a sensational 201 not out, 179 of which were scored in an unbroken 202-run partnership with his captain Pat Cummins to flip the script. The result confirmed Australia's place in the final four, along with hosts India and South Africa, and left Afghanistan heart-broken.

The chase wasn't the only thing that got tighter and tighter towards the end. Maxwell, having fielded the 50 overs in the Mumbai heat, began cramping up badly. It was his legs; they'd just stopped working. He looked in ago-

nising pain in the 41st over, prompting the next batter, the #10 Adam Zampa, to wait by the boundary-line while ato keep him going.

And go he did. Batting without ever moving his feet, Maxwell kept clobbering sixes until he brought home the Australian miracle: 201 unbeaten runs in just 128 balls, with 21 fours and 10 sixes. It was one of the greatest ODI innings of all-time.

Maxwell had walked in to face Omarzai's hat-trick ball in the ninth over -when Australia were 49 for 4 in pursuit of 292.

He was then involved in a mix-up, which cost Australia the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne for 14. When Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Starc fell soon after, leaving Australia at 91 for 7, the game looked done. Except it wasn't.

With 21 needed off the final four overs for Australia's win and Maxwell's double-hundred, he went 6,6,4,6 against Mujeeb Ur Rahman to provide the double coup de grâce.

Mujeeb could have cut Maxwell's innings short on 33, had he not dropped a sitter at short fine. Maxwell then went about doing Maxwell things. He mowed Noor Ahmad over midwicket, shanked Mujeeb over his head, and carted Mohammed Nabi over midwicket. Defending champions Rivers View Football Club managed to secure 12 victories, but suffered four losses, resulting in a total of 36 points and a third-place finish overall.

From June to November, fans were treated to extraordinary matches involving nine teams -- Beacons, Rivers View, Rising Stars, Lazio, Agatash United, AK Galaxy, Potaro Strikers, Mil Ballers, and Wolves United -- vying for the championship.

Bartica Football Association President Alden Marslowe has congratulated all participating clubs, and emphasised that the league's successful completion would not have been achievable without the invaluable support of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).

“The 2023 B.F.A Senior Men's League can be described as groundbreaking, due to the fact that, for the first time in over a decade, nine clubs participated in a full league (two rounds) at Bartica. The assistance that we received from the Guyana Football Federation has once again proven to be a valuable necessity to the reality and success of the league,” Marslowe has said.

He added, “Bartica is overflowing with gratitude towards the GFF, the Executive Committee of the BFA, all stakeholders and all clubs that participated in the league.

In June, GFF President Wayne Forde disbursed $12.4 million in cheques to the nine Regional Associations (RAs) as part of the Members Financial Assistance Programme (M-FAP) for the implementation of the 2023 Senior Men's League.

Launched in 2020 with the complete endorsement of the GFF Congress, M-FAP serves as a pioneering initiative designed to offer assistance to GFF members across four vital areas: Administration and Operations, Equipment and Material, Competition and Technical Development, and Infrastructure Development.

President Forde has extended his congratulations to the Bartica Football Association and the players for their accomplishment of yet another successful tournament.

"The Federation remains steadfast in its commitment to investing in club-level football development, offering players a competitive platform and a pathway to pursue opportunities on the senior national team programme and beyond Guyana,” Forde said.

he Berbice Cricket Board’s (BCB’s) very active cricket season continued on Saturday last with the start of the BCB Premier Round-Robin T20 Tournament, in which matches were played across the ancient county.

This tournament is the second first-division tournament to be started recently, following the Ivan Madray T20 Memorial League. The BCB has also acquired sponsorship for the hosting of two fifty-over tournaments which would be played on a round-robin basis.

The sponsors are ANSA McAL Trading and AJM Enterprise respectively.

On Saturday last, Rose Hall Town, Port Mourant, Young Warriors and Blairmont cricket clubs each registered victory in the first round of play in the Premier Round Robin T20

Tournament, while the match involving Albion versus Rose Hall Canje was washed out due to rain. The match between Police Sports Club and Tucber Park also could not be played due to lack of suitable venue.

However, highlight of the opening round was a majestic 110 not out posted by the CPL’s Best Emerging Player, Junior Sinclair, who struck eight huge sixes and nine boundaries against Skeldon at the Area ‘H’ Ground.

Half centuries also came from Alex Algoo (80), Seon Hetmyer (74) and Clinton Pestano (60). Pestano, like Berbice senior player Seon Glasgow, also took a four-wicket haul.

ard-fought matches played on Sunday evening in the Guyana Football Federation’s KFC Elite League Cup resulted in Den Amstel Football Club defeating Victoria Kings and Guyana Defence Force emerging victorious against Fruta Conquerors.

The opening match of the tournament, on November 5 at the Eve Leary Sports Ground in

Coach of the President’s XI team, Balram Samaroo, has said that all the members of the team were making their first-division debut, and were excited at the new innovation of the BCB to aid in their development.

eacons Football Club have been crowned champions of the Bartica Football Association Senior Men's League. They turned in a stunning performance on Saturday night at the Bartica Community Centre Ground to register a commanding 7-0 victory over Agatash United Football Club.

Beacons Football Club have maintained an impeccable record in the league, with 42 points from 16 matches culled from 13 wins and three draws. And on match night, they culminated a near flawless journey to the championship.

From as early as just eight minutes into the November 4 game, spectators were treated to an exhilarating championship match characterised by remarkable goal-scoring.

Whitley Welcome dominated the goal-scoring, netting two goals in the 8th and 17th minutes of the game, while Kyle Caesar (28th), Quance Butters (30th), Brian Joseph (50th), Jermaine Christian (57th), Ronaldo Parris (60th), and Kurt Welcome (68th) each contributed one goal to secure the team’s claim to the championship.

Potaro Strikers have also played 16 matches, register-

ing 13 wins, one loss, and two draws, from which they amassed a total of 41 points to secure the second position on the table.

Fireworks expected as GHE, Red Force battle in semifinal I

n a highly-anticipated face-off today, the stage is set for a pyrotechnic semi-final showdown between the Guyana Harpy Eagles and the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the CG United Regional Super50 tournament.

Having showcased their prowess in the group stages, these teams will battle it out under floodlights in a day/ night encounter.

The Red Force have emerged as the standout team in the group stages, and are yet to taste defeat. Despite facing two rain-affected games, they have soared to the top of the table, displaying consistent form throughout the tournament.

In contrast, the journey to the semifinals has been a rollercoaster ride for the Guyana Harpy Eagles. Initially teetering on the brink of elimination after enduring two losses, their fate took a turn when two key batters each delivered a stellar performance that propelled them into the final four.

he top four teams in both the Boys’ and Girls’ division of the ExxonMobil Schools’ Under-14 Football competition have recently been rewarded for their efforts in this year’s tournament.

Boys’ champions Bartica Secondary School, and their female counterparts - who finished third in the Girls’ category - received their prizes from ExxonMobil Guyana Community Relations Advisor Ryan Hoppie on Saturday at Bartica.

And first-time entrants to the competition, Girls’ champions Waramuri Primary Top, also received their prizes

from Hoppie at Anna Regina on Saturday. Their male counterparts, who finished second in the Boys’ category, received their prizes at the same time.

Meanwhile, in Georgetown on Monday, ExxonMobil Guyana Community Relations Advisor Lashawna Prescott handed over prizes to the Girls’ runner-up team President’s College, and fourth-place finisher Tucville Secondary. The third and fourth place finishers in the Boys’ category, Bush Lot Secondary and New Central High School respectively, also received their prizes on Monday at the Ministry

of Education (MoE) Ground.

The top four teams received $300,000, $150,000, $75,000 and $50,000 respectively for a school project.

Many of these projects involved sport and football gear for the schools, among other initiatives.

Bartica Secondary pooled their resources from the Boys’ and Girls’ winnings to erect a large tent, in addition to acquiring sporting equipment. With their winnings, Waramuri Primary Top Girls acquired a laptop, printer and ink. President’s College’s Girls put their winnings towards the resuscitation of the school’s playfield.

The semifinal match is poised to be a battle of fine margins, where individual performances would weigh heavily in determining the outcome. Both teams possess strengths, but also face critical areas of concern that could impact the final result.

Shariff impresses at CAC Women’s Chess Championships 2023 T

he Central American and Caribbean Women’s Chess Championships 2023 provided several days of intense competition, a wealth of experience, and camaraderie for female Guyanese player Sasha Shariff, who picked up four points from the competition held in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

The former National Women’s Chess Champion competed in a field decorated with Women FIDE Masters, Candidate and International Masters. Despite being one of the lowest-ranked players in the tournament, Shariff won against the top female players from Honduras and Puerto Rico.

While placing fifteenth in the tournament, the Championships recorded Shariff’s playing performance as a staggering 172 rating points above her current FIDE ranking. While her wins were impressive, it was her losses that excited the local Federation, as she, by the smallest of margins, lost to International and Candidate Masters, players whose rankings should have been leaps and bounds ahead of hers, but who all, at some point in time during their games, fell prey to Shariff’s intellect.

Her most impressive game came against Gabriela Vera Perez from Puerto Rico, a match that lasted only twenty moves. Shariff entered the match with a clear game plan to counter the Sicilian opening played by her opponent, until she could achieve an advantage. After an hour of gruelling play, Shariff set a trap for her opponent, resulting in the loss of a bishop and a clear sight into future checkmate.

Perez immediately resigned.

Puerto Rico. This match was much different, and involved accurate end-game play between the two women. Sheriff manoeuvred her pawns and king, resulting in two passed pawns up to Otero’s zero.

Otero then resigned, giving Shariff four points to close out the competition.

Shariff’s performance identified her as one of the top young female talents from the Caribbean, and at only twenty years old, her future in the sport is very bright.

The Guyana Chess Federation is happy with her performance, and encourages her to continue training to ensure success and participation in upcoming international tournaments.

In an invited comment, Sasha said, “Despite the difficulties, participating in the tournament was an enriching experience. I learned a lot from observing and playing against top-level players. The intense matches pushed me to analyze positions more deeply and make calculated moves. I discovered new strategies and techniques that I can incorporate into my future games.

Each game brought a new opportunity to demonstrate my

abilities and learn from any mistakes made.”

She also thanked the Federation for its sponsorship, and hopes to see much more female participation in tournaments such as these.

The GCF offers training to chess players by coaches both locally and internationally.

Top female players are currently being coached by WGM Martha Fierro, who has committed to preparing the girls for qualification for the next Chess Olympiad in Hungary in September 2024.

Training for the Olympiad for the Open team will commence very soon, with the assistance of an international coach.

Anand Raghunauth, President of the GCF, has reiterated the commitment of the GCF to providing the opportunity for training and development of chess players to venture abroad for competitions, as this allows players to earn titles and gain experience from playing other renowned and titled chess players.
