New UK Ambassador lauds Govt’s climate change, sustainability policies – President Ali commends UK’s support to protect Guyana’s sovereignty, territorial integrity

he Irfaan Ali-led Government’s robust climate change and sustainability policies were on Tuesday recognised by new British High Commissioner to Guyana, Jane Miller – who has committed future collaborations to ensure a safer environment for newer generations.

Miller shared this position after presenting her letter of credence to President Irfaan Ali, paving the way for her to officially take up her substantive role. She replaces Greg Quinn as the new British High Commissioner to Guyana.

After the departure of Quinn, Ross Denny, who previously served as the UK’s Ambassador to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, was asked to cover in an acting capacity until Miller’s arrival.

In her remarks, the diplomat noted that the partnership between the two countries is strong and will be further strengthened “to the benefits of both countries” during her time in office. Praising Government’s stance on climate change, she pointed out that the issue is also at the forefront of the agenda of UK’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

“Already this year, I’m aware you’ve signed the Leader’s Pledge for Nature and the Global Oceans Alliance. Both of these are key milestones as we work together on sustainable options for cleaner, safer environment for our children,” she noted.

In response, President Ali said that it was important to work together to “seize the opportunity to match political will with action” in the fight against climate change.

He said that he was confident that the 26th UN Climate Change Conference, expected to be hosted in Glasgow in November, will give greater consideration to the concerns of small-island developing states and low-lying coastal states.

“This Conference represents a watershed moment for the discussions on climate change…My Government has advanced its work to revitalise our Low Carbon Development Strategy. Guyana’s future actions in this area will place great emphasis on the protection of our environment, the preservation of our biodiversity and the promotion of renewable energy and measures to ensure climate adaptation,” said the Head of State.

Guyana, he noted, is taking meaningful action to contribute to the global efforts to address “this existential crisis”.

Ali welcomed Miller as the first female Great Britain High Commissioner to Guyana, and stated that the countries have long-standing ties of history and share similar values for the respect of human rights and democra-

He added that since attaining Independence in 1966, Guyana has shared a strong relationship with Great Britain. He also credited the European nation for being “unwavering in its support for Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

The President, in his remarks, commended the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) for its role last year in defending Guyana’s democracy.

“I must once again restate the sincere appreciation of my Government for the role which the United Kingdom played last year with its principled stand for the preservation of Guyana’s democracy during the impasse in the announcement of the results of our General and Regional Elections. My Administration is committed to sustaining democratic rule in Guyana.”

The President said that Great Britain has been supportive of Guyana’s devel-

opment efforts through numerous programmes of cooperation, including debt relief, education, water supply, restructuring of the sugar industry, public sector reform and strengthening of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies.

He also applauded its continued support of Guyana’s economic development, including its assistance to strengthen our infrastructure.

The new envoy was pleased with some of the Britishfinanced programmes, including the SMART Hospital Initiative. She also applauded the President for his “determined effort to roll out vaccines across the country” in the fight against COVID-19 and on him applying to join the Media Freedom Coalition.

Speaking on her agenda, she detailed, “The UK is here to support you. I’m aware of the number of British businesses already working in Guyana, including the provision of UK expertise in the oil and gas sector, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, sustainable energy, just to name a few…During my time in Guyana, I look forward to discuss with your Government and civil society, issues of human rights. This will include LGBT rights, abolishing the death penalty and decriminalising suicide. I believe through constructive dialogue; we can learn each other’s perspectives and take meaningful steps.”

Eid-ul-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice)

sma’il was born to Prophet Ibrahim and Hajra (Hagar), in his old age. Eid-ul-Adha celebrates Father Ibrahim’s absolute faith in God. His devotion and faith resonate in the existence of man as a temporary life, and acceptance that God is the preserver of the substance of man. Ibrahim (AS) had been a devoted servant of the Lord even though his wife Sarah couldn’t bear a child for most of their lifetime, yet his patience and contentment with his Creator never faded. After decades of faithful service to Allah (SWT), he finally became a father and named his son, Isma’il (AS).

God’s command to Ibrahim to sacrifice his beloved son was not questioned by either of them, and their faith in their Lord and their submission to his command was rewarded, because God intervened through his angel Jibra’il (Gabriel) and informed Ibrahim that his sacrifice had already been accepted. God stayed Ibrahim’s hand at the last moment and ordered him to slaughter a ram that was caught in some bushes nearby instead. This was a clear message to humanity that sacrificing humans is strictly prohibited, and was the genesis of Qurbani and Eid-ul-Adha – the Festival of Sacrifice.

Qurbani means sacrifice. Every year, Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated

by Muslims around the world by slaughtering an animal – a goat, sheep, cow or camel – to reflect Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isma’il, at God’s command and to commemorate a testament of God’s mercy to the faithful.

Traditionally, one-third of the meat from the animal must go to poor or vulnerable people; one-third for neighbours, associates and friends and one-third for family.

According to Islam Now: “Eid-ul-Adha is the latter of the two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year, with the other being Eid-ul-Fitr, which comes after the auspicious month of Ramadan (Eid-ul-Fitr – small Eid) and the second during Qurbani (Eid-ul-Adha – big Eid). The second of these two Eids represents the most sacred time of the year for Muslims as it marks the Hajj pilgrimage.

“Hajj is a religious duty that should be carried out by all able Muslims at least once during their lifetime. Millions of Muslims travel to Mecca every year for Hajj, retracing the steps of Ibrahim (AS) as he left his wife, Hajra, and his son, Isma’il, in the desert of ancient Mecca by the command of Allah (SWT). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) later established Hajj as an annual pilgrimage.

“The Hajj pilgrimage is regarded as an honour for Muslims, with all those who complete it allowed to adopt the title of Hajji (men) or Hajjah (women) for life. Those who feature such titles in Islamic culture are thought to hold more wisdom, thus earning greater respect from their peers.

“The first pilgrimage, called Hijrah, was the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) migration from Mecca to Medina, then called Yathrib, and this is when the tradition as we know it today came into fruition. Hajj, which takes places over three days, runs into Eid-ul-Adha (Qurbani), and thus Muslims on the pilgrimage carry out the traditional sacrifice of livestock as per the Quran’s ruling.”

A prominent Guyanese Muslim elucidated that once the Eid prayers and sermon are over, the Qurbani sacrifice may begin and the meat of the sacrificed animal is shared three ways (one for the person making the sacrifice, another for friends and family and one for the poor and needy). Following this, Muslims come together to celebrate the Festival of Sacrifice, which sees the exchanging of gifts and greetings.

According to Wikipedia, “Islam is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion teaching that Muhammad is a messenger of God: It is the world’s second-largest religion with 1.9 billion followers or 24.9 per cent of the world’s population, known as Muslims. Muslims make up a majority of the population in 51 countries. Islam teaches that God is merciful, all-powerful, and unique, and has guided humanity through prophets.”

Islam, according to Quranic texts, means to achieve peace – peace with God, peace within oneself, and peace with the creations of God – through wholly submitting oneself to God and accepting His guidance. The term Islam derives from the threeletter Arabic root, S (?)- L (?)- M (?), which generates words with interrelated meanings, including “surrender” and “submission”.

This correlates with Prophet Ibrahim’s acceptance of God’s will.

Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca, The Hajj; a journey that embodies sacrifices in the quest to fulfill religious obligations, and which is demonstrative of the teachings of equality.

Its observance continues to exemplify humane characteristics of generosity, morality, and love for others, especially the less fortunate. In a multi-religious society like Guyana, these attributes have proven their value not only in catalysing and strengthening bonds among our people, but which continue to forge bet-

ter understanding and appreciation of our cultures.

Unfortunately, while traditional celebrations of this auspicious occasion have been curtailed due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19, nevertheless, the party urges reflection on the pertinent messages of the occasion and the many sacrifices Guyanese have made over time for self-advancement and nation- building, with the common objective of a better life and future for all.

God Almighty has reminded us, in the final revelation to mankind, this glorious Quran; “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favours upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your way of life.” (Holy Quran-Chapter 5 Verse 3)” All gratitude is due to Allah (SWT), Lord of all creation, peace and blessings on the Prophets and the final Prophet to mankind (SAW), his family and companions. I extend Eid Mubarak greetings on behalf of the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana, and pray that Allah, the Almighty, accept all our sacrifices and good deeds.

Eid-ul-Adha is the commemoration of one of the most celebrated Prophets and his family in history - Our father, Ibrahim (peace be upon him), or Abraham. He is known as the common patriarch of what is referred to as the Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The day of Eid-ul-Adha is the commemoration of the sacrifices of our father Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and his family. This struggle, at its core, revolves around his absolute and pure devotion to Allah (SWT), GOD Almighty. Him and his family’s willingness to sacrifice his prized possession and that which he loved most, his son Ishmael, fulfilling the commandment of his Lord.

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is described as the forefather of all the Prophets who came after him, including Moses, Jesus, and our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is accorded the highest status in the Holy Quran, and is described in Chapter16: verse 120 as an “Ummah,” a nation. Imagine a single person referred to as an Ummah. This is partly because the amount of good, his exemplary submission to Allah (SWT), and his sincerity in his worship all embodied to the degree of an entire Ummah,

a nation. He was given the title of Khaleellullah, or friend of Allah.

His submission to the Lord is confirmed in the Quran, “When his Lord said to him, “Submit”, he said, “I have submitted [In Islam] to the Lord of the worlds” (Holy Quran-Chapter 2: Verse 131) Now that Eid-ul-Adha is upon us, how should we commemorate this day? Eid-ul-Adha is a season of reflection, happiness, family bonding, and bridging the gap between the rich and poor, as well as nurturing mutual compassion for all of humanity.

Eid is also an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity despite we are experiencing another year of not being able to observe the Hajj. The Muslim Ummah and the world continues to experience crises and face challenges.

We are in a period of a great test, which should motivate us to reflect on the blessings of the Lord which we take for granted.

We must not become complacent during this pandemic, many have lost their loved ones due to COVID-19, and therefore we must give abundant thanks. Let us use this opportunity as an impetus which drives us to be more compassionate to all of humanity. The pandemic does not discriminate, every race, colour, creed or social standing has been affected. We must respond in the spirit of sacrifice, compassion and selflessness.

Eid al-Adha is the celebration of the reformation of the human condition from that of servitude to men to servitude to the Creator of all living and non-living things. We must remain humble and do not fall into the trap of considering ourselves better than others; Remember Allah (SWT) says, “People, we created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into nations and tribes so that you should get to know one another. Allah (SWT) reminds us, “The most honoured of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware.” (Holy Quran – Chapter 49: verse 13).

Considering Eid as a unifying factor, I humbly request you to join me in raising our hands in supplicating to The Almighty for Blessings and

Protection of our Muslim brethren and all of humanity. Let us pray for peaceful co-existence in Guyana and the entire world. Change begins with the person in the mirror. Our actions must prove that we mean no ill to anyone, and we must remember that we are all part of one humanity. Each one of us has to be the change that we desire. Verily, Allah (SWT) will not change the condition of a people until they change themselves. (Holy Quran – Chapter 13: Verse 11) As we enjoy ourselves, let us keep the remembrance of God ever present on our tongues and in our hearts. Let us extend kindness to our less fortunate. Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, described the days of Eid. “They are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah.”

Allah (SWT) reminds us about Prophet Abraham in the Quran, “Indeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allah] and this Prophet, and those who believe [in his message]. And Allah is the Wali (protector and helper) of the believers.” (Holy Quran Chapter 3: Verse 68) Our Father Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, epitomised the verse of the Quran: Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).”

(Holy Quran Surah Al-Imran 3: verse 173) May Allah (SWT) bless you and your families and make us people who strive to bring benefit to others.

Let us become agents of peace, instilling harmony among people, regardless of ethnicity and creed. Let us be protectors of each other.

May GOD bless our nation as we all strive for a better country! May Allah (SWT) show us right as right and help us to follow it, and show us evil as evil and enable us to stay far away from it. I pray our reflection leads us to be true followers of the great Prophet, Patriarch, our father, the Friend of GOD Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him and his family.

Guyana Shore Base Inc responds to payment’s claims Dear Editor, We refer to the recent local news articles from July 16 and 18, 2021, which carried the headlines “Locals complain about being paid less than expats for doing the same job at GYSBI” and “Shore Base Employees fired after complaining”, respectively. The company is extremely disappointed at the scandalous and inaccurate journalism, written with the intention to sensa-

tionalise and create stress to one of the largest employers in the industry. There has also been no effort to seek the truth and report the facts to the Guyanese public. GYSBI wishes to clarify a few of the many inaccuracies published.

Guyana Shore Base Inc (GYSBI) is not a foreign company; GYSBI is a Guyanese company working hard to improve the lives of its 432 employees

and the country of Guyana.

Out of its 432 employees, 25 or 6 per cent are expat employees. 94 per cent of the company’s workforce are Guyanese, with Guyanese holding many key senior management positions. The expat employees who work for GYSBI are individuals who would have spent many years working in the oil and gas industry in many countries across the world and are only hired when special-

ty skills or experience are contractually or legally required. Expats bring their international experiences which are used to train locals, transfer skills and technology and more importantly, transfer international standards to Guyana’s fledgeling oil and gas industry. In these trying times, our Muslim brothers and sisters have been asked, like Abraham, to show love and obedience to Allah (God); and, like him, will be rewarded for such demonstration. As the story goes, Allah appeared to Abraham in a dream and asked that he sacrifice his son, Ishmael. This unselfish act, even though tempted by forces to disobey, was met with unflinching loyalty and obedience.

On Abraham’s way to make the sacrifice of his son, God stopped and gave him a ram to sacrifice instead. Abraham was rewarded for his obedience and willingness. His experience reminds us of the sacrifice of selfish desires for the common good, and of God’s mercy and benefits when we obey His command. This is, thinking of others, and placing our trust and faith in the Most High.

The lesson of Abraham is that Allah will never ask mankind for more than we can give and sacrifice, and He will also never leave or forsake the obedient. It is the mercy of Allah that continues to keep Guyanese, every day in these trying times, as we are presently being called to sacrifice of ourselves for our brothers and sisters, as Abraham was prepared to do with Ishmael to prove his love and obedience to God. And on this and every day, may Allah continue to shine His blessings on every Guyanese.

Obedience to God and benevolence to mankind, particularly the poor and needy, demonstrate our common humanity and strengthen, the chords of cohesion in our community.

Eid-ul-Adha, through the expressions of care and the outpouring of charity to others, is a manifestation of our collective endeavour to build a more equitable society, in which everyone will be treated with dignity and respect, and which will promote greater harmony.

n 82-year-old man from Region Four (DemeraraMahaica) is Guyana’s latest COVID-19 victim, thus taking the death toll to 514.

The Health Ministry on Tuesday reported that he died while receiving treatment at a medical facility.

This is the 37th person to die for the month of July.

New statistics provided by the Health Ministry showed the overall positives rising to 21,668, comprising 10,577 males and 11,091 females. This is af-

ter 62 more persons tested positive for the virus within one day.

To date, 12 patients remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU); while 97 are in institutional isolation, 1052 on home isolation and two in institutional quarantine. The country has seen 19,993 recoveries. Since the pandemic started, 212,205 persons were swabbed for the coronavirus.

Of the new positives, one was from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); eight from Region Three

(Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara); 28 from Region Four (DemeraraMahaica); four from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); 18 from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and four from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice).

Cases in Regions One (Barima-Waini), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) did not increase.

Meanwhile, even as 50 per cent of the adult popu-

lation has been vaccinated with their first COVID-19 dose, the country is still some distance from achieving the herd immunity status.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony disclosed that 243,540 persons, equivalent to 50 per cent of the adult population, have received their first doses.

Herd immunity, however, entails having 80 to 85 per cent of the eligible persons receiving both doses. As at this present time, Guyana is at 26 per cent immunity, an indication that more work needs to be done.

“In terms of second dose, we have been able to vaccinate 128,847 persons. That represents 26.5 per cent of our adult population. To get to herd immunity, we’d like persons to be fully vaccinated, and we’d like to get to approximately 80 to 85 per cent of our adult population being fully vaccinat-

ed. So, we’re a little bit off from that, because we’re only at 26.5 per cent that are fully vaccinated. We have a lot more work to do,” Dr Anthony has expressed.

He underscored that the vaccines are safe, providing protection against deaths and severe forms of the virus. With some degree of vaccine hesitancy emanating in communities, the Minister noted that their apprehensions can be easily cleared through sensitisation.

“We want people to understand that these vaccines are safe. They’re working, they’re helping to prevent deaths, severe disease, and they (persons) need to come out and protect themselves. We have seen some people who have been hesitant and they’re not coming forward to get their vaccines…Some of the hesitancy has to do with a fear of maybe getting a jab, a little bit of pain that you

get from that. Some people are fearful of needles, others fear reactions, so all of this can, if people have those discussions, those fears that the unvaccinated people have would be dispelled,” he added.

In Guyana, females are leading the positive cases. But the Health official outlined that this could be linked to higher testing rates in women, as opposed to men.

“It depends on how many persons are coming forward to be tested. So, if there are more women coming forward to be tested, then we can have that type of increase. It’s probably not a real increase, but it is reflected in the numbers because more women are coming forward to be tested. Men generally would come only when they’re really sick, and that’s unfortunate, but that’s our reality,” he said.

PSC calls for unvaccinated workers to provide negative COVID-19 test results

ecognising the growing cases of COVID-19 infections and deaths in Guyana, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) has called for Government to initiate a requirement of having all medical and security personnel be vaccinated or provide evidence of a medically current COVID-19 negative test.

ment services, including restaurants, should require evidence of either vaccination or a medically current COVID-19 negative test from its customers in order for them to receive service.

This stance comes at a time when COVID-19 infections and deaths are reported in persons who are not fully vaccinated, and affects Government’s ‘sterling’ efforts to obtain vaccinations for people in an effort to achieve herd immunity for the nation.

As such, the PSC has said, “The Private Sector Commission embraces and recommends that its member companies require that all those of its employees who refuse to be vaccinated must provide evidence of a medically current COVID-19 negative test from infection before reporting to work, while continuing to encourage all of its employees to become vaccinated.”

The organisation contended in its missive that there is extensive and growing judicial opinion within the Caribbean and internationally that individual rights do not override the collective right of the community when the community as a whole is threatened.

Allusions were also made to the recent position taken by Franch President Emmanuel Macron and the Government of Belize, which outlines that those who refuse to be vaccinated are putting the rest of the population at risk.

The Commission endorsed the position taken by the Adviser to the Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, where he was quoted as saying, “If you want to exercise a right to not take the vaccine, you must be prepared to face the consequences”, and that, “While someone has the right to refuse the vaccine, those persons do not have a right to expose the rest of us to their reckless risks.

“The Private Sector Commission is ready and willing to support all and any action taken by our Government that will serve to protect our population from the surge of this pandemic, inclusive of a comprehensive policy to be ‘gazetted’, which will ensure that vaccinated citizens are protected against exposure from those who exercise the freedom to refuse to be vaccinated,” the statement expressed.

“The benefits accrued from these acts are shortlived and will not avail us on the Day of Judgment. Let us remove…those things which threaten our closeness with God and eternal happiness,” he said, urging Guyanese to apply lessons from the celebration into everyday life to continue to build Guyana into a better place.

WBD couple terrorised, robbed during home invasion

husband and wife were on Monday terrorised and robbed by two armed men who invaded their home at RechtDoor-Zee, West Bank Demerara.

The two perpetrators, one of whom was armed with a handgun and the other with a knife, eventually carted off $200,000 in cash, one pair of gold-studded earrings, one gold wedding band, one diamond-and-silver ring, and one Samsung Galaxy cellular phone.

Based on reports received, the 44-year-old woman was sitting in the

verandah of her home with her mother when she observed two men jumping the western gate to enter the yard. Before she could raise an alarm, the men

had run up to her and held her at gunpoint, in the process relieving her of a sum of cash and jewellery.

The perpetrator with the knife reportedly kept

watch while the gunman went into the house, where he accosted the 48-year-old man who was in this bedroom, and began to demand cash. The perpetrator even discharged a round in the man’s direction, hitting him on his left leg.

The Police have said that the perpetrators then confiscated their victims’ cash and made good their escape in a waiting vehicle.

After the ordeal, the injured man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH), where he was admitted a patient.

An investigation has been launched.

63-year-old attacked, robbed by armed bandits

A

63-year-old man was on Tuesday attacked and robbed by four armed men whilst heading home in the vicinity of Freeman Street, La Penitence, Georgetown.

Reports are that at about 06:10h on the day in question, the man was con-

fronted by the perpetrators, who were on two motorcycles with unknown number plates.

The pillion riders of both motorcycles dismounted and held the victim at gunpoint, but the elderly man reportedly put up a resistance. This led to one

of the perpetrators hitting the victim to his face with a gun. He then discharged a round in the air, thus causing the victim to sustain minor injuries.

The other pillion rider, however, relieve the victim of $4,500 in cash, one Samsung tablet, one Blu

cellular phone, and some personal documents.

After committing the act, the men made good their escape.

The matter was subsequently reported, and an investigation has been launched.

The unemployed Hamblin was accused of committing the act on July 17, 2021 on Angelina Yearwood of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden.

Romano Hamblin has been sentenced to 1 year’s imprisonment

wenty-five-year-old Mahindra Singh of Murphy Dam, West Bank Berbice (WBB), was on Monday evening attacked and stabbed by an identifiable man a short distance from his home.

Police investigation revealed that the victim’s wife and her sister had a heated argument on the day in question at about 21:30h over her sister taking her husband home to sleep due to the fact that he was highly inebriated and a nuisance.

She stated that after she collected her husband

and was heading home, the suspect attacked them and stabbed the victim to his right-side chest with a broken glass bottle.

The injured man collapsed and he was picked up and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he was treated but later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital.

There he was admitted and is presently in a serious condition. The matter was reported to the Police and an investigation was launched.

The suspect has not been arrested.

Imitation, flattery...

…and Granger ow that David Granger’s fighting tooth and nail (and maybe “dagger”, since that was his army nickname!) your Eyewitness needs to shed some light on his backstory. It mightn’t be too well known nowadays – excepting for those around the PNC back in the day – but Desmond Hoyte and David Granger’s “conkie” didn’t ‘gree”.

This was clear from the moment the leadership of the party unexpectedly landed into the lap of the former – when Burnham transitioned on an operating table at the “Big Hospital”. At that time, Granger was Commander of the GDF – a position to which Burnham had appointed him in 1979 to staunch the inroads Rodney was making into the GDF Officer Corps. And we know what happened six months later on June 13, 1980; don’t we?

Hoyte pointedly bypassed Granger and appointed Joe Singh as the Chief of Staff of the Disciplined Forces.

Granger was made “Presidential Advisor on Security” – never to be consulted! He was left to stare at the four walls of his office! So why did Hoyte in effect banish Granger? It wasn’t personal. He knew Granger was a dyed-in-the-wool Burnhamite – having observed from 1965 his slavish loyalty to Burnham over the army or the country. He was Burnham’s ideologue in the armed forces.

And Hoyte – with no wide support base in the PNC – knew his challengers would come from the Burnhamite wing. He moved to preemptively defang them. Some, like Chandisingh, were banished with ambassadorships; others, like Hamilton Green, were expelled; and some – like Burnham’s son-in-law, Van-West “Baby Jesus’ Charles - had to make way for the “young bloods” brought in as MPs. The last lot – not coincidentally – also had no base, and could pose no threat to his authority!!

Does all this sound familiar in the present? Ahhh! Abused children DO become abusive parents!! Granger is studiously following in Hoyte’s footsteps. As your Eyewitness has always insisted, the poor fella isn’t an original thinker – he doesn’t even THINK – but simply remembers! And in doing so, flattered Desmond Hoyte – who WAS able to seize control of the PNC! The question, of course, is whether Granger can repeat Hoyte’s feat.

It’s doubtful. Not only because circumstances have changed since 1986 – and tactics would have to be adjusted accordingly – but also because Hoyte had the presidency when he made his moves. He had so much more discretion – including patronage. Granger has none of these – and is seen as a Johnny-come-lately into the party – never mind his swearing that he was a member since 1965!

His only card is control of the PNC Congress’s timing, format, and selection of delegates.

These are formidable powers – but not insurmountable for his challengers.

…and diabetes Guyana is rightfully proud of the medical staff of the GPHC performing their first kidney transplant on a foreigner – a medical doctor from Grenada, a member of Caricom.

Now, kidney transplants are generally a consequence of uncontrolled diabetes – which puts a strain on the kidneys to filter out the excess glucose in the blood. So, the culprit is diabetes – which unfortunately affects an extraordinarily high number of persons in Guyana and the rest of Caricom.

Our rate of death – and diabetes is the third leading cause of death in Guyana – from the disease is twice as high, for instance, than in the Scandinavian countries.

As a result, not only do we have high kidney failures, but high rates of foot amputation and dialysis – all consequences of diabetes. So, what leads to diabetes? Mainly, it’s the consumption of too many carbs, especially from starchy and processed foods that’s been stripped of fiber – combined with lack of exercise.

Ironically, all imported with the burgeoning Americanstyle fast-food joints springing up like jumbie umbrellas!

…and sugar Well, with Exxon ramping up its production as it projected from the beginning, looks like GuySuCo’s looking to follow suit. We’re told Rose Hall’s reopening and hiring’s on the way.

Health Advisor supports tougher action for unvaccinated citizens

dvisor to the Health Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, believes that while it is not Government’s position, tougher action should be taken against unvaccinated citizens.

His comments come in light of a post on his Facebook page which lauded the measures announced

by France in relation to unvaccinated people.

France’s policy is that Public Sector workers can only go to work if they are either vaccinated or produce a weekly test to prove that they are COVID-19 negative. The same applies to people going to a restaurant, a show, or using public transportation.

“The most comprehensive policy on COVID-19 vaccination has been announced by the French President.

It basically preserves the non-compulsory vaccination policy we all have, but it takes steps to protect those

citizens who are vaccinated from those who are non-vaccinated. While someone has a right to refuse the vaccine, those persons do not have a right to expose the rest of us to their reckless risks,” the post stated.

Ramsammy has said that persons must be prepared to face the consequences if they are refusing the vaccine. He adding that “we must all do the same” as France.

On the sidelines of an event on Monday, Ramsammy explained that Guyana’s vaccination programme has always been voluntary, and while he does not foresee a change in that policy, public health is not about an individual right.

“It’s about the right of everyone, and we have examples where people can exercise their rights but it’s conditioned. The most wellknown one is tobacco. So, you are free to smoke, even though I advise you or the

Minister (advises) you that it is detrimental to your

health, but you can’t smoke in here (in a closed build-

ing)… you have to go somewhere where you don’t expose other people,” he said.

He said it is the same with the vaccination programme, adding that while one is free to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine, one cannot put others at risk of contracting the virus.

“So, I have long advanced the position…that whilst it is still a voluntary exercise, taking the vaccine, that we also have a right, in fact we have an obligation to protect the rest of the population. This is not the Government’s position, so I’m speaking on my own behalf.

“I believe that, for those who refuse to take the vaccine, they must therefore guarantee the rest of us that they are not going to represent a risk to anyone of us.

How do they do that? If you don’t want to take the vaccine, prove to me that you are not infected before you can share my workplace, before you can share my other space,” he said.

He further explained that, by exercising one’s right to refuse the vaccine, it also means that measures should also be put in place for them to not expose others to contracting COVID-19.

Slain Haitian President to be laid to rest on Friday – National Flags to be flown at half-staff

lain Haitian President, His Excellency Jovenel Moïse will be laid to rest on Friday and as such, in keeping with Proclamation No 2 of 2021, which was issued on July 7, 2021, by His Excellency President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, all National Flags will be flown at half-staff.

This will be done in solidarity with the Government and people of Haiti as they bid their final farewell to the slain leader.

President Moïse was

assassinated in the early hours of Wednesday, July 7, at his home. It was reported that President Moïse was killed in an attack on his home in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince.

Interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph had stated that the Head of State’s private residence was stormed by unidentified armed men in the wee hours of July 7, 2021, who shot the 53-yearold leader to death, while injuring his wife, First Lady Martine Moïse.

The First Lady was

flown to the Jackson Health System’s Ryder Trauma Center, South Florida, where she was successfully treated.

Prime Minister Joseph described the killing as a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act”.

He said, “The country’s security situation is under the control of the National Police of Haiti and the Armed Forces of Haiti…

In an interview with this publication, Attorneyat-Law Sase Gunraj, one of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP)-nominated Commissioners, confirmed that the meeting had to be aborted before the motions to dismiss GECOM Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, his deputy Roxanne Myers, and Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo could be debated.

He said that during the virtual meeting, Oppositionnominated GECOM Commissioners Vincent Alexander and Desmond Trotman logged out in protest, effectively staging a virtual walkout. Charles Corbin, the third Opposition Commissioner, stayed online until the meeting was adjourned.

Asked about the way forward, Gunraj explained that there are still a lot of options

available to the Commission, but they are waiting for GECOM Chairwoman, Justice (retired) Claudette Singh, to make a decision.

“They said they don’t want to participate in the motion. And they walked out… They just logged out of the meeting… it’s nothing new. We have become accustomed to it.” Gunraj explained to this publication.

“But we have also designed countermeasures to deal with those things, and the law provides for remedies in the event of these shenanigans. I think we can host a meeting in the adjournment. We have a lot of options. But we’re waiting to hear what the Chairman will say,” the Commissioner said.

The GECOM trio were before the court for a variety of electoral fraud charges when Gunraj and fellow Government commissioners Manoj Narayan and Bibi Shadick brought motions for their dismissal from GECOM. The motion explained that the CEO, in spite of protests from contesting parties other than the APNU/AFC, deliberately chose to neglect the complaints of discrepancies in relation to Mingo’s numbers.

In the case of Myers, that motion was submitted in the names of Shadick and Narayan. They argued that she aided Lowenfield in the commission of all his infractions, and even went out of her way to facilitate a meeting in a GECOM facility by then Foreign Affairs Minister Karen Cummings, where she threatened to revoke the accreditation of international observers.

He is also seeking “a declaration that the complainants Sase Gunraj and Bibi Shadick in the motion for dismissal of the applicant cannot properly participate, hear and determine their own complaint against the applicant.”

Further, he wants “a declaration that the respondent, having determined

that there shall be a hearing of the motion for dismissal of the applicant brought by Commissioners Gunraj and Shadick, is bound to provide the applicant with a fair hearing, including the protections of the rules of natural justice.”

GECOM had unanimously decided to send Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo on leave, pending a debate on the motions calling for their dismissal.

The GECOM Chairperson was supposed to fix a date for this debate at the time Lowenfield decided to move to the court.

Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo are all before the courts for a number of electoral charges for their attempts to sway the results of the March 2020 General and Regional Elections in favour of the then ruling APNU/ AFC Government.

Dr Gobind explained that the Proof Coin is struck in 99.99 per cent pure silver and weighs one troy ounce.

The front carries the Coat of Arms, and the back carries the national bird. This coin has an issue limit of 1500.

The $100 circulation coin has the Coat of Arms on the front and the Jaguar on the back.

Due to advanced technology, Dr Gobind said, the Jaguar is painted in five colours – white, red, black, green and yellow—and is only the second painted coin that has ever been issued by the Bank.

The coins were minted by Osborne Coinage of the USA and the Royal Canadian Mint and feature the theme of the 55th Independence Anniversary – One Guyana.

he Police are on the hunt for two men who executed an armed robbery on Sir Gas Station, New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD), on Monday evening.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at about 21:30h on the day in question, the gas station was closed and the supervisor was about to exit the premises when the two suspects - both clad in black masks - ran onto the premises and held him up.

However, during the ordeal, one of the perpetrators discharged a round into the air, ran to the security guard on duty and assaulted him.

On the other hand, the other suspect forced the supervisor back into the office and demanded he hand over the keys to the drawer which had an undisclosed

sum of cash. After collecting the money, the armed man went to the back of the gas station where he attacked another employee and dealt him one blow to his head with his weapon, causing him to receive injuries.

The two men then made good their escape in a white motor car which was parked

a short distance away.

After the incident, the security guard and the injured employee were taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) where they were treated and sent away.

UNICEF donates 2 million water purification tablets for flood relief efforts in Guyana …tablets handed over to CDC for distribution

cting United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative Irfan Akhtar on Tuesday handed more than two million water purification tablets to the Civil Defence

Commission (CDC) for distribution to flood- affected areas.

Akhtar stated that clean water was essential for life, especially during times of flooding. The donation of the two million water puri-

fication tablets, which will treat 10 million litres of water, will ensure the provision of safe drinking water to thousands of Guyanese.

The CDC is a valued partner of UNICEF, and the organisations have worked together on many issues. The acting UNICEF Representative assured that support would continue to be provided once the need arose.

“When the recent flooding disaster occurred, UNICEF recognised that children and families would be among the most affected and we immediately responded, based on the needs list issued by the CDC. We recognise that when children don’t have access to clean water, it affects their health, nutrition, education and learning abilities, thus impacting many aspects of their lives. Clean and safe water is essential for chil-

dren’s health, survival, and development,” Akhtar noted.

Accepting the donation was CDC’s Deputy Director General, Major Loring Benons, who lauded the sustained assistance from the United Nations in Guyana. Major Benons said that the water purification tablets play a very important role in response and recovery and the CDC would begin distributing the supplies to affected areas immediately.

This donation of water purification tablets complements emergency support provided by UNICEF through the Human Services and Social Security Ministry for flood relief.

UNICEF has supported the Ministry to procure shelter supplies, WASH and hygiene kits, water storage containers, and materials for child- friendly spaces.

accounted for; and Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud has said measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence of such

In an interview with this publication on Tuesday, the Minister explained that her Ministry is working on finding and resolving these systemic issues.

Dr Persaud has made it clear that, under her tenure, she does not want a recurrence of a situation in which monies are not accounted for, and as such, changes have been made.

“What discrepancies they found was during the last five-year period. And as such, we are, through the Permanent Secretary, reporting this on all the documentation we were given, that we had access to within the Ministry,” she explained.

“In terms of the reconciliation and what we plan to do, we have been in talks with the Auditor General to see how we can close that account, because it has been a longstanding problem. So, we’re actively looking at bringing that to a close,” she explained.

According to the Minister, they are looking at closing off the account by the end of August, so that personnel from the Auditor General’s office can come

and do their work. She explained that among the changes they have been implementing since she took office in August 2020 is reconciling payments on a weekly basis to ensure the data can be up to date.

“Of course, it is something that bothered us, because it will remain an outstanding query in the Auditor General’s report.

And we’ve been putting our own systems in place to ensure that that does not happen. We are being very systematic in how we reconcile the pension with the Guyana Post Office,” the Minister said.

“That is an inherited problem, but we have put systems in place so there is no recurrence of that. I would not want that to happen under my tenure. And it has to do with the Post Office bringing back the vouchers to us so we can reconcile.

And we have put a system in place so that they have to do that on a weekly basis.”

In his 2016 report, the Auditor General had found that $594 million which were meant for monthly old age pension payments could not be reconciled. The monies that were unreconciled have since been reduced to $115.9 million as at 2017.

The Ministers of what was then the Ministry of Social Protection during that two-year span were Volda Lawrence and Amna Ally.

But in the centre of this confusion is the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC), which is responsible for paying pensioners and submitting vouchers to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and the Ministry of Finance, so that payments can be reconciled.

During Monday’s sitting of the Public Accounts

Committee (PAC), the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shannielle Hoosein-Outar, explained that the accounts would be closed so that the monies could be reconciled.

“Normally GPOC would send the Ministry a statement and we would look at it and compare it to our cash books, because we’re supposed to have the same balance. We would give GPOC the funds, they would pay to the pensioners, and they would bring the coupons back into us.

“There was a difference of $115 million, which we are still reconciling with the assistance of the Auditor General’s Office. As it stands right now, we have taken the advice of the Auditor General and we are in the process of closing the old old age pension account and opening a new old age pension account,” the PS said.

Education Minister refutes claims of teachers, Union being treated unfairly – as GTU threatens strike action if concerns not addressed

ust hours after the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) protested the Education Ministry demanding that Minister Priya Manickchand address several issues of concerns, the Minister rubbished claims made by the Union, deeming it as uncalled for.

The GTU claimed that they are being treated unfairly and has threatened to strike if the Minister continues not to consult with them on various issues such as the operations of schools in the pandemic, salary increases, debunching, the reshuffling of Head Teachers, grants, school records, among other things.

Speaking on the Union’s behalf, its President Mark Lyte said that the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has had enough of the Education Ministry’s mistreatment during the pandemic and is

calling for inclusivity.

“This is just the beginning of a process, and as you know they are several things that a Union could do to get the attention of the employer, strike is nev-

er ruled out, but this is just one of the actions that we have initiated to kick start the process with a view that we will not have to end up in a strike situation.”

“The necessary intervention can be taken swiftly so that the Union would not resort to a strike like we did in 2018, and you saw how crippling that was to the system. We would not want to go down but if we have to, we will,” Lyte stated.

Lyte told reporters that the Union has learnt about various matters related to teachers and the education system through the media a practice that has to come to an end.

“We decided at my invitation that we were going to meet statutorily every month as parties [of] the Ministry of Education and all its professional officers as well as the Union and as many people as they would like to invite and that has happened. In fact, we have

met over the course of the last 9 months or 11 months 6 or 7 times we have the dates. The last few times we have invited the Unions to meetings on our statutory date the Union has been putting the meetings off, I thought at the time and I still hope that those were genuine postponements and issue wasn’t being created so that we could end up in this problem now,” the Minister explained.

Minister Manickchand also stated that there are records of all of the meetings, while mentioning that it was made clear that if the Union has any problem,

they should consult with her, but this is not the case in this instance.

The Minister added that she has not met with the Union in the last two months because both she and the Union’s representatives were busy.

According to the Minister, her Ministry has been doing its part, and it seems as though the Union only wants the Ministry to consult with them. She said even though the Union is an important stakeholder, “they are not, and will not be the only stakeholders that the Ministry speaks to or consult with”.

In saying all of this, the Minister said the Ministry will maintain a professional relationship with the Union, since it is a representation of the country’s teachers.

On the other hand, she said if the Union is going to become a political organisation, it will have to decide if it wants to separate itself from politics and remain a professional body.

In terms of the other concerns raised by the Union, the Minister claimed that they are uncalled for, since the Government has been working assiduously to ensure that all teachers are being treated fairly.

overnment, through the Public Works Ministry’s Special Project Unit, accelerated its $99.5 million road maintenance programme in Georgetown.

These works are to remedy defects developed during the rainy season and will restore the safety, serviceability, structural capacity and appearance of the roads.

In order to remedy the current flaws, the city was divided into five quadrants and a visual inspection of each quadrant was conducted which identified and prioritised the thoroughfares for emergency remedial

Sectional rehabilitation or overlaying is part of the works catered for; these include but are not limited to roadway excavation followed by the placing of minimum white sand or sand clay and minimum aggregate base layer and 50 millimetres (mm) asphaltic concrete.

Additionally, several potholes will be remedied. This includes squaring and cleaning of potholes, place and

compact aggregate base finishing with some 50mm asphaltic concrete as directed by the engineer.

Asphaltic concrete for the project will be supplied by the Public Works Ministry, while contractors will be paid to transport, place and compact the material according to technical specification.

Minister Juan Edghill said the advance works are in keeping with

Government’s development agenda and also to ensure that the nation’s roadways are safe and secure.

The Minister is appealing to road users to exercise patience, noting that traffic diversions have been enforced to facilitate several road projects.

Some $25.6 billion has also been approved for the rehabilitation and construction of roads and bridges under Budget 2021.

“The other thing that workplaces can do to make sure that they are safe is really to get their employees vaccinated. There’re many workplaces that their employees have not been vac-

cinated, and that would put the employees at risk and plus it would put the public that’s coming into that particular workplace at risk as well. I think if workplaces truly want to be safe, then they must ensure that these measures that we’re talking about (are implemented).”

He further emphasised, “We know that from time to time people would pull down the mask and be talking to people. You have to wear it correctly and consistently, and maintain social distancing and so forth. With these measures, it would significantly reduce the risk of infections. Therefore, the workplace would generally be safe. Without any one of these things being in place, the workplace can be at risk.”

The Health Ministry has extended the offer to all workplaces to have a team of health personnel visit and immunise workers with both doses. Some companies have already jumped on board this initiative, but others are yet to follow suit.

“Rather than them having the inconvenience of coming to one of our sites, if they inform us, …we will be able to bring a team to the worksite and do all the vaccinations there. If it is first dose, we will come back and do the second dose as well,” he suggested.

Persons still attempting to falsely acquire COVID-19 vaccine cards

ersons desirous of obtaining a COVID-19 vaccination card in Guyana can do so only at the expense of having their shots administered.

This was the position shared by Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony on Tuesday amid reports that people are still attempting to obtain such documents under false pretexts without being immunised.

“There are a few people who don’t want to take vaccine but they’d like to get a card, and we’re not going to allow that to happen. You must get your vaccine if you’re going to get your vaccination card. As the world is opening up now and people would like to travel, many countries are asking for you to have your vaccination card,” the Minister detailed.

Some persons have tried to falsely obtain vaccination cards by claiming that they have misplaced their original document.

The Health Minister has explained that if someone has genuinely misplaced their card, there is an established process in place to get a replacement.

“We are only going to issue vaccination cards to those who have received their vaccines. If there are any persons who claim they misplaced their vaccination

cards, then we will have to go through our records to see if it’s a genuine case, or if somebody is trying to fake it,” he explained.

Government is not only tasked with monitoring the COVID-19 infections and treatment, but other secondary issues which can cause a spread. According to Dr Anthony, people are utilising the established hotline numbers to make reports of various violations to the national guidelines.

“We have seen people calling into these hotlines to give us tips about people who are violating the COVID-19 measures. We have Police on staff as well, that when we get such call,

n a world where access to COVID-19 vaccines for people living in developing countries is severely limited through a global inequity in vaccine distribution, Guyana is doing a tremendous job in vaccinating her people. As at the end of July 19, Guyana has vaccinated over 50% of the adult population with at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines. More than 25% of the adult population are fully vaccinated. But it is clear that there is doubledigit vaccine hesitation, with a large section of the adult population refusing vaccines. A UNICEF survey in November/ December 2020 in Guyana had revealed that at least 30% of the adult population expressed hesitation in taking the vaccines. In real numbers terms, Guyana has vaccinated more than 243,000 adults with their first COVID-19 vaccine dose. There are enough first dose vaccines for more than 350,000 adults in the country.

This indicates that there are Dr Leslie Ramsammy enough first dose vaccines for at least another 100,000 persons.

But uptake rates in all ten regions have significantly slowed. In part, this is due to the significant number of anti-vax persons among us.

While Guyana has experienced some difficulties in obtaining second dose Sputnik V, Guyana has procured enough vaccines to fully vaccinate all adults. Shipping of these vaccines now remains Guyana’s challenge in ensuring there are enough vaccines to fully vaccinate all adults. But these vaccines will be in the country even if the arrival dates are uncertain. The bigger challenge now is to get every adult to voluntarily come forward for their vaccine. At some point, Guyana will have to address the need for vaccination for adolescents and children. For now, adolescents and children depend on adults doing the right thing and protecting children.

The right thing to do to prevent more spread of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated as early as possible.

Vaccination in Guyana remains a voluntary option. Every Guyanese adult has a right to either vaccinate or refuse COVID-19 vaccine. Here is the problem: while a citizen has the right to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine, he or she has no right to endanger the lives of any other person. Because there is a vaccine hesitancy, countries like America, where there is no shortage of vaccines, are falling below target. America had hoped that at least 70% of its population would be fully vaccinated by July 4. It is presently struggling to reach 70% with at least one dose; and, worse, struggling to reach 50% fully vaccinated. America is faced with the dilemma of what to do with the unvaccinated. These unvaccinated people in America have full and easy access to vaccination. Canada is facing the same dilemma, and so, too, are countries in Europe, Australia and Israel.

These are countries that have enough vaccine to vaccinate their whole population.

Once Guyana has secured all the vaccines we need within our borders, we will have to confront the monster of vaccine hesitancy, like other countries are doing. France, and to a lesser extent Canada, has taken steps to deal with the unvaccinated, while preserving their right to voluntary vaccination. In the Philippines, that country has embarked on more draconian measures – jail time - for those who refuse to be vaccinated.

Unlike the Philippines, France has preserved the voluntary vaccination. But France has also instituted consequences for choosing to be unvaccinated. The French President has announced that those who choose not to be vaccinated cannot, at the same time, jeopardise the health of those who have voluntarily taken the COVID-19 vaccine. In France, the President has announced that employees in both the public and private sectors who choose not to take the COVID-19 vaccine must demonstrate they are COVID-19 FREE by producing a PCR confirmation weekly, and that these employees must finance the cost of testing from their own pockets.

President Macron has announced also that anyone without a COVID-19 Vaccination Pass must produce a PCR COVID-19 negative test result before entering a restaurant or public transportation, including buses, trains and planes.

Every right is conditional. No one can exercise a right when, in so doing, it impedes another person from exercising his or her right. We are all entitled to a safe environment. Right now, people who are not vaccinated represent a danger, because they are the potential vectors for the COVID-19 virus. Right now, because the more dangerous form of the virus, the Delta Variant, has become the most dominant COVID-19 virus that is spreading around the world; and the more it spreads, not only is it leaving in its path many very sick people and many deaths, it is also changing into more dangerous variants, none of us can guarantee that as new variants arise, the vaccines will still work. Therefore, the unvaccinated represent a clear and present danger. No country can afford to allow some selfish people to jeopardise lives and the national economy.

Thus, France has shown a practical, pragmatic approach. France has preserved its voluntary vaccination programme, allowing anti-vax people to exercise their right. But France has also made it clear there are consequences. Public health always is supreme to the exercise of individual rights. A Government must provide an environment in which everyone is safe. Vaccination against COVID-19 is an obligation for a safe environment. For those who object, the onus is on them to prove they do not represent a clear and present danger.

iguel Wong is currently the only table tennis player among a handful of Guyanese athletes who have already qualified for the first ever Junior Pan American Games, to be staged later this year.

In hopes of representing Guyana and himself well, the 20-year-old athlete is looking to

participate in an overseas training camp, in order to adequately prepare for the international event.

As such, the Campbellvillebased restaurant Taco Loco has stepped in to support Wong’s initiative with a monetary donation.

wo teams are eager to make their participation count on Saturday at the Dassie and Friends 10-10 round-arm one-day softball extravaganza at Keele Top, Toronto.

The action is set to bowl off at 09:30 am, and 11 teams would be competing on a knock-out basis. The winning side will pocket Cdn$4,000 and a trophy, but other cash prizes and trophies are up for grabs.

Vice-captain of the Challengers team, Nando Jaglal, has said his team is ready to go, and the members are very confident they could be the victorious unit at the completion of things.

According to Jaglal, the team is well-balanced, and has done fine in this version of the game.

Additionally, Jaglal notes that his team is currently featuring in the Ontario Round-Arm Softball Cricket Association’s 20-over tournament, and has been churning out some good performances, which would definitely boost its confidence immensely for Saturday’s showpiece.

Amit Bacchus of Bacchus Ruff Ryders was also optimistic that his boys would emerge successful.

Bacchus, President of the club, mentioned that the day should be fascinating, with a large number of top-quality softball players on show, but his team is equipped to be triumphant. He expressed confidence as well that his players would play intelligent cricket from the first ball bowled.

The teams participating in this extravaganza are: SCC, Bacchus Ruff Ryders, Assassins, Leguan Boyz, Hawaiian Sensation, AllStars, Challengers, Reliance Lions, Apex Predator, Fearless Titans, and Young Warriors.

Organizer Damodar Daesrath has taken the opportunity to again thank sponsors for the day’s event, and has promised players and fans that it would be a terrific day during this challenging time of the global pandemic. He has also indicated that all COVID protocols would be in effect from the commencement of the game.

Meanwhile, the day’s event will be played in memory of Johnny Bujan, who had been a servant to cricket Canada, and the owner of Brampton Masters Cricket Club that has played in the Toronto District and Cricket Association over the years. Bujan had managed Cricket Canada team on many international tours as well. He passed away in 2016 at age 50 in a vehicular accident.

because I think it's important that we start to look at athletics as a profession here in Guyana,” Jabour shared.

He continued, “We have people like Miguel, (who) put their heart, soul, time, almost entire lives into developing themselves to be the best at their sport.

And I think it's important now that the Private Sector and the Government get on board with the youth, in particular, in developing them in their particular areas.”

Jabour opined that other

corporate entities should support Guyana’s athletes.

“He's on his way to a camp outside of Guyana, with the correct facilities, the correct trainers, and opportunity for him to further develop himself.

And I think it's important that Taco Loco and all Private Sector organisations do their part to support them (athletes) as they are a major support for our economic prosperity.

“When they go away and they put Guyana on the map, it's more

people that come back to Guyana, more business that's done with Guyana, because people see that we are interested in development, and (of) the youth in particular,” Jabour explained.

Touching on the athlete’s journey and perseverance, Jabour has said he views the 20-year-old’s achievements as “phenomenal”.

“So, I'm really, really proud to be a part of this. I've been watching Miguel for many years now, watching him develop in his sport (in) somewhere like Guyana, (noting) that he hasn't had all the best opportunities when it comes to facilities, when it comes to opportunity to train; and to be very honest, for how much he has achieved with the little that he has. It is phenomenal,” Jabour gushed.

He added, “It's an unbelievable achievement, and I think we all need to pay a little bit more attention to these guys that basically beat the odds.”

On the other hand, Wong had nothing but gratitude for the businessman’s support. He has promised to do his very best at the tournament.

“I want to say a very warm thank you to Kian and the management of Taco Loco for coming on board. This will be going towards my preparation in terms of attending a facility to train for the Pan American Games.”

Wong continued, saying, “I welcome this contribution with open arms, and we will continue to work towards our goal, and trying to perform our very best at the upcoming Pan American Games.”

Starc breaks Pollard’s resolve, Aussies record huge win

With all the wickets tumbling, Kieron Pollard stepped up to the plate and played an aggressive innings in the early part of the game. Alzarri Joseph and Kieron Pollard put together a 68-run partnership, but Mitchell Marsh dismissed Joseph for 17.

Pollard needed to carry on, but Mitchell Starc, who has gotten him so many times, managed to break his resolve and send him packing for a well-played 56 off 57 deliveries.

Things took another drastic turn as Starc picked up wicket number five when he removed Akeal Hosein for a duck to have the West Indies at 98-9. In the end, Hayden Walsh Jr fell to Adam Zampa to wrap up the game after playing a small cameo of 20.

Australia make a solid start

Earlier in the innings, Josh Phillipe and Ben McDermott got Australia off to a solid start, scoring 51 runs in the first 10.6 overs.

The pair looked fluid and confident, but Akeal Hosein came on and enticed Phillipe, which resulted in the partnership being broken.

Phillipe departed for a well-played 39, but this brought Mitchell Marsh to the crease, and despite his flurry of boundaries, he, too, went back in the pavilion for 20. In the space of 19 runs, two more wickets fell as Australia moved for 80-2 to 114-4, this was as a result of Alzarri Joseph and Hosein bagging two wickets each.

Even with four wickets down, Alex Carey stepped up to the plate. The 26th captain of Australia, alongside Ashton Turner, ensured that his side would not turn over so easily. They produced a handsome partnership of in excess of 100 runs, which put them back on course.

Carey played a handy knock of 67 off 87 deliveries, while turner supported with 49 off 45 deliveries.

Walsh stamps his authority

Even though Australia were well settled and cruising comfortably, Hayden Walsh Jr, who was crowned ‘man of the series’ for his performance with the ball in the T20I series, pulled things back for the West Indies. He removed the in-form Carey and Turner in the space of three balls to turn the tide.

Walsh was far from over; he went on to grab his maiden ODI five-for as he demolished three more Aussie wickets to bag figures of 5-39 and put the West Indies in a comfortable position, leaving them a target of 257 via the Duckworth-Lewis Method.
