The service industries are meanwhile estimated to have expanded by 7.6 per cent, driven largely by in creases in wholesale and re tail trade, and transport and storage. The overall 2022 growth rate for the services sector is now forecast to be 6.3 per “Thecent.construction sector is estimated to have grown by a strong 20.4 per cent in the first half of 2022, reflect ing intensified activity in both the public and private sector,” the Ministry also ex plained. Fiscal policies Senior Minister with re sponsibility for Finance within the Office of the President, Dr Ashni Singh, was quoted as saying that the continued growth pro jected for 2022 builds on the 4.6 per cent growth recorded last year. He also attributed this to the Government’s fis cal “Ledpolicies.byPresident Ali and fuelled by the rapid econom ic growth, we have embarked on a period of rapid transfor mation, and our Government has laid out a masterplan for the rapid development and transformation of Guyana.” “More importantly, we have demonstrated the ca pacity and commitment to working assiduously to make this vision a reality so that benefits can redound to citizens in the shortest pos sible time,” Dr Singh also in dicated.Dr Singh noted that upon the assumption to of fice by the President Irfaan Ali-led Government, the Administration recognised the importance of a strong, diversified economic base. As such, even in the early days of oil production, the admin istration placed the highest level of importance on a re silient non-oil economy.

“For the full year, real GDP growth in 2022 is now projected at 56 per cent over all, and non-oil GDP growth at 9.6 per cent, maintaining Guyana’s position of global leader in economic growth,” the Ministry of Finance said. The report noted that the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors are estimated to have expanded by 10.9 per cent in the first six months of 2022. These figures were driven by higher production from the other crops, forest ry and livestock, in spite of weaker performances in the sugar, rice and fishing in dustries. The sector is now expected to grow by 11.9 per cent. With respect to mining and quarrying sectors, these are estimated to have grown by 64.6 per cent in the first half of the year, with a re vised 2022 forecast of 99.9 per cent driven by growth in the petroleum and other mining“Theindustries.petroleum sector ex panded by an estimated 73.5 per cent, with 34.6 million barrels of oil produced in the first half of the year. This was the result of the com mencement of oil production at the <<<Liza Unity>>> FPSO in February.”

“Also on the upside, the bauxite industry is estimat ed to have grown by 31.9 per cent, and the other mining and quarrying (sand, stone, diamonds, manganese) in dustries by 36.3 per cent, in the first half of 2022,” the Ministry said. The aim, according to the Finance Minister, was to modernise the economy’s tra ditional economic pillars and usher in a rapidly growing and highly competitive nonoil economy. This, he not ed, is evident in the nation’s non-oil economic growth at the end of the first half. While the economy has grown and is projected to keep growing, so too is infla tion… in light of the fallout from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has exacer bated disruptions in the sup ply chain and has resulted in global surges in food prices. “Guyana has not been spared. Consumer pric es were 4.9 per cent higher than levels recorded at the end of 2021 and this was due largely to higher food and energy prices… Given the existing geopolitical tensions globally, inflation is now pro jected to be 5.8 per cent for 2022,” the Ministry said. The mid-year report also recounted the various mea sures the Government ad opted, such as reducing the excise tax on petroleum from 20 per cent to 10 per cent at the time of Budget 2022 pre sentation. This was reduced even further from 10 per cent to 0 in “Additionally,March.

However, the nation is look ing to see if the PNC would come up with some other ‘big-blocking objections at the last moment. Guyanese are weary of the usual ridic ulous claims that the PNC is famous for making.

Sure

It is of note that the Norton-led cabal attempts to convey that the House-toHouse approach would be a panacea to their claims re garding the current list. It is also widely known that the approach hypocritically targets the removal of the names of thousands of over seas or otherwise engaged Guyanese, who may not find it convenient to be at their last noted address at the time of a possible House-toHouseTheyvisit.do so contrary to the ruling of the High Court, for want of convenience and excuses, also knowing that their representatives are in the polling station on poll ing day to identify any socalled “Dead Voters”. Of sig nificant interest, it is the representatives of the same PNCR and APNU who run the diaspora before each election, to request qualify ing Guyanese to return to vote and make donations.

It was established in the 1980’s and its member states are Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St Kitts and Nevis, Grenada and Barbados with headquarters in Barbados. It is not well known that Guyana was not a member of the RSS, but last March, at the 33rd intersessional meeting of CARICOM heads, President Irfan Ali signed the protocol along with other RSS member states, present. Guyana will officially join the RSS following the signature of the remaining Heads of member states to the protocol. As such, it is incumbent for the Government of Guyana, and the Ministry of Home Affairs to be reminded of its obligations in its own anti-crime efforts in conjunction with the rest of CariCom to operationalise the “CariCom Crime and Security Strategy” adopted at the 24th inter-sessional meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government on 18-8 Feb 2013 in Haiti. The Strategy augments the RSS’ work, which is not investigative per se.

Concerning the lat ter, the GECOM Public Relations Officer reported that 28,149 were new reg istrants between the ages of 14 and 17, while 21,130 were new registrants above the age of 18. Also, 4,629 persons applied for trans fers; 6,526 persons changed or corrected their informa tion; 7,667 applied for re placement identification cards, and 1,940 registrants retook their ID photos. It is rational for one to accept that the slow pace of transactions during this Claims and Objection Exercise is strongly linked to the thorough work that was done during the former Cycle. In keeping with custom ary practice, the GECOMled Claims and Objections exercise which commenced on August 22 will allow qualifying parties further update opportunities to the final List. It is aimed at providing all stakeholders the opportunity to object to the names of any deceased persons that may remain on the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE), from which the Official List of Electors (OLE) is gleaned. According to reports, approximate ly one thousand new regis trations of persons eighteen years and older, along with five hundred transfers and one hundred retaken photo graphs, were completed.

All political stakehold ers are in this process, and it will be interesting if there are any unreasonable com plaints at the end of the ex ercise. It is public knowledge that PNCR and Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton led the cries about the list being bloated based on the inclu sion of dead persons, and the current exercise presents the opportunity for them to ensure the appropriate screening at this time. Many of their questions will be an swered at the end of this ex ercise, which allows the nay sayers to object to the names on the List that should be removed. Based on the list put up by GECOM around the country, it is observed that the names of many per sons who died are already removed, presumably due to the coordination between the General Registration Office and GECOM. Further, it is interesting that the total transactions have not been raised by the Norton clan as matters of concern. Notwithstanding the beginning of the Exercise was smooth, and it is now very slow, with the closing date coming up, there may be a little more response.

v. CARICOM will establish a CARICOM registry of forensic experts that can be accessed by all Member States. The Community will take steps to familiarise stakeholders with the full range of available forensic services and address gaps in knowledge; TO BE CONTINUED

While there were fourteen strategic goals adumbrated, Goal #7, to “Strengthen the Effectiveness of Criminal Investigation through Modern Technologies and Scientific Techniques”, is most relevant right now. Where do Caricom and Guyana stand on achieving these objectives?? Which are to: 1: “put the best possible tools in the hands of its law enforcement community so they can identify, apprehend, and prosecute criminals swiftly and effectively. 2: Implement “Mechanisms to enhance the effectiveness of criminal investigation should include the effective use of modern technologies and scientific techniques. The use of forensic tools, including Deoxyribonucleic (DNA) testing, in conjunction with proper crime scene management, complements traditional crime solving methods while greatly increasing the rate of crime detection and enhancing the success of criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Dear Editor, The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is currently running off the Claims and Objections exer cise across the country, fol lowing a recent robust and well-scrutinised Continuous Registration Cycle. The re sponses so far have been slow, but the process for both activities involved the purposeful keenness of par ty verification scrutineers from various divides. This approach supports an ac ceptable level of transpar ency, and lends to the suc cess of establishing a final representative Voters’ List for the holding of Local Government Elections as early as GECOMpossible.must be com plimented for facilitating the recent very success ful process of Continuous Registration, which realised over 70,000 transactions, thereby producing a very good Register of Registrants.

Editor, permit me to re mind our qualifying cit izens that when making Claims and Objections, they must have the relevant source documents. Original birth certificate or a val id passport in the case of new registration. Original Naturalisation Certificate issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and original birth certificate or a valid passport in the case of natu ralisation. The original mar riage certificate and original birth certificate should be presented in the case of a re quest for a name change by marriage.Further, it must be not ed that citizens must pres ent to the officials at the GECOM Registration Office original deed poll and orig inal birth certificate in the case of a name change by deed poll. It is important for any one making an objection to any name on the OLE to be accredited by the scruti neers or by an elector who is listed in the same Division List as the person he or she is objecting to. Citizens must also be aware that they can and must use this exercise to make sure that their ID cards are appropriate. The GECOM official would also conduct updates concern ing corrections of the wrong spelling of one’s name, wrong date of birth, and de faced pictures. Further, lost ID Cards could be replaced by the citizens, who make an application for this us ing the statutory form from the GECOM office, after it is signed by a Commissioner of Oaths.GECOM must be com plimented for their genuine effort to produce the best possible List of Electors in preparation for the overdue LGEs.

Once again, in the wake of sensitive criminal investigations, or concerns about same, the Government has called upon the Regional Security System (RSS) to assist our local Guyana Police Force to “assess” their efforts. The first time was in September 2020 with the Henry brothers’ and Haresh Singh’s murders in West Berbice and presently and now, with the fallout from the Fagundes murder investigation from March 2021. According to the DPI, “The RSS is an international agreement for the defence and security of the eastern Caribbean region with future expansion planned with South America. It sets out to preserve the peace and stability of the region by delivering world-class, professional, effective and efficient services through cooperative engagement with partner nations, the security sector and the peoples of the region.”

Strategic Lines of Action i. CARICOM will establish a CARICOM Forensic Task Force to develop policies and programmes, raise awareness and implement programmes for the provision of forensic services to all Member States with particular attention to the needs of countries that have limited or no forensic capabilities, and the provision of services that are currently inadequate or unavailable within the Region; ii. Member States must be able to guarantee the credibility of crime scene management as inappropriate procedures can result in the contamination or exclusion of evidence. The establishment of minimum standard operational procedures for crime scene investigators to guide and govern the processing, investigation, and management of crime scenes and the conduct of experts should be reflected in written protocols;iii.Improved crime scene management is vital for the successful prosecution of crimes. Training in crime scene management is needed for all ranks. The first responders are usually local officers who are not trained in crime scene management and can therefore contaminate the evidence long before crime scene specialists can get there; iv. CARICOM will take steps to heighten awareness and the sensitivity of the judiciary with regard to the use of forensic science within the criminal justice system, and in particular to ensure familiarity with technical aspects of forensic evidence and testimony will be pursued.

The attempt of some Western countries and an ti-China forces to use UN bod ies to manipulate Xinjiangrelated issues is doomed to fail.Fourth, what the inter national community should really be concerned about is the genocide, including cul tural genocide, of Native Americans and other in digenous peoples by some Western forces; the contem porary forms of slavery and forced labour realised by hu man trafficking from abroad; the systematic racism against ethnic minorities; the gun vi olence resulting in tens of thousands of civilian casual ties every year; the historical regression in women’s rights; the torture and ill-treatment in overseas detention facili ties; the indiscriminate kill ings of civilians in overseas military operations; and oth er stains of the century in the human rights’ track records of some Western forces. OHCHR should earnestly listen to the cries for justice from developing countries, immediately investigate hu man rights’ violations of some Western forces, and issue a report thereon, so as to show accountability to the world and the vast number of vic tims.

Dear Editor, Hats off to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, as indeed it is commendable that “Govt. (is) taking (a) handson approach to rid (the) city streets of vagrants…” Even as I perused the news on this, I took sharp offence as regards “…accu sations made by Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine, (saying that) too little is be ing done to address this pro tracted dilemma.” I there fore think that I need to voice a First, response.Mayor Narine is way out of order in “describ ing the vagrants as “social rejects.” Maybe that is how loathsome they are to him, and others who use them for cheap labour. What Guyanese need to know is that “Homelessness (accord ing to the UN) is a profound assault on dignity, social in clusion, and the right to life. It is a prima facie violation of the right to housing, and violates a number of other human rights in addition to the right to life, CityHishandlingthetionexpressedvehementlyinghewantofasSo,anddomritywaternon-discrimination,includinghealth,andsanitation,secuoftheperson,andfreefromcruel,degradinginhumantreatment.”Narine’sdeemingthem‘rejects’istheverydefeatanythinghewouldevertodoforthem.Infact,hasalreadystartedplaypoliticswiththisissue.Isaythisbecausehehasandpublicly“…hisdissatisfacatthemannerinwhichGovernmenthasbeenthecurrentissue.”claimisthat“…theCouncilhasnotbeen receiving any help from the Government to initi ate a proper plan to remove homeless individuals from the streets of Georgetown”. However, I cannot give credence to Mayor Narine, and with good reason, too. For example, as I go back to January of this year, I note that the press highlighted that “Town Clerk Candace Nelson chided (the) City Mayor Ubraj Narine for stating that the Central Government did not provide a subvention for last year, even as she provided details on how the allocated Gy$30 million was spent.” This was necessary, as Narine was claiming that President Irfaan Ali had ignored his request for the subvention, and Ms. Nelson had to dis patch a letter (of memory) to the Mayor to upend his false claim. At this juncture as well, more credibility destruc tion for the Mayor was ad vanced by A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) as, “…on the issue of the subvention, and stopping short of calling him a liar, the statement released was that “When you stand to represent a position, your stand ought to be grounded in truth, especially if you’re seated in a seat of authori ty and example. I say this again and again, the prob lem with City’s Government isn’t the employees, but rather the very governance.” Now, I do agree with Mayor Narine that “…the Capital City Georgetown has been faced with them (homeless/ vagrants) for many decades,” but a re minder is timely here. It is that Mayorship from 19962015 was under Hamilton Green. During 2015-2018, Patricia Chase-Green held the post, and since 2018, Pandit Ubraj Narine him self took over. Yet noth ing was achieved nor done in this regard. In fact, Mayorship of Georgetown and the City’s governance, even when the PPP/C was not in power, never mani fested an acceptable level of performance.Irecallthat in September last year, the shocking re ality was that “After tak ing office, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) Government had launched an audit into City Hall, tar geting both the financial and operational makeup of the municipality.” Why? It was because, for the year before, there was no ac countability for the $300 million Restoration Fund which was contributed to the Georgetown Mayor and City Council for the resto ration of the dilapidated City Hall Building. I suggest that the Mayor and City Council under the aegis of Ubraj Narine do what the Minister of Human Services and Social Security suggests. This means that the “…Mayor, too, puts his hands to the wheel…do his part, and get involved in this…(as) the Ministry is al ready doing its best to en sure that people are not on theAfterstreets.” all, Minister Persaud and the Government she represents are very much aware of the prevalent problem of home lessness in Georgetown. According to her, “The Ministry is very cognisant of this problem… and wants to ensure that people who are homeless have a safe space.”In this regard, I re mind all that the Public Night Shelter at East La Penitence, Georgetown can now accommodate even more persons following the completion of significant in frastructural works on the facility. A new wing was added to the facility at a cost of over $5 million, while the interior and exterior of the existing building were significantly enhanced. Editor, let’s bear in mind that the homeless aren’t to be viewed as individuals of less value, or as nuisances. Many of them are simply unfortunate victims, and happen to find themselves without homes under cir cumstances that they can not control. Let’s remember, too, that catering for the homeless is not tantamount to solving the problem, as no authority can force anyone to take advantage of provi sions. As the Minister de tailed, “It’s not prison, we can’t force people to stay there…the best efforts will be made to help persons in a situation of homelessness, no matter their age, ethnic background or gender.”

Dear Editor, The Great philosopher Socrates encouraged his stu dents to use three sieves, viz: truth, goodness and useful ness, to speak of others. As the Chinese Embassy has noted that some newspapers in Guyana covered OHCHR’s “assessment” on Xinjiang, we wish the readers to be aware of the following truth and facts.First, OHCHR drafted and released the so-called as sessment without the man date from the Human Rights Council, or the consent of the Chinese Government; which is a serious violation of the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and undermines the credibility and impartiality of the OHCHR. The so-called assessment is based on the presumption of guilt. It takes the words of a few anti-Chi na separatists as the main source of information, while deliberately ignoring the au thoritative information and objective materials provided by the Chinese Government, and therefore has no credibil ity. The so-called assessment distorts China’s laws and pol icies, smears China’s efforts against terrorism and ex tremism in Xinjiang, and di verges significantly from the statement issued by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, made after her visit to China.Ithas seriously tarnished the professionalism and in tegrity of human rights work, and has interfered in, and un dermined, the international human rights cooperation. Second, the so-called as sessment is purely a farce plotted by some Western countries and anti-Chi na forces. They have been consistently pressing the High Commissioner and the OHCHR, and demanding the release of a so-called “as sessment” on Xinjiang, so as to bring ammunition to their political manipulation of Xinjiang-related issues. It is a completely politi cised document that disre gards facts and reveals ex plicitly the attempt of some Western countries and an ti-China forces to use human rights as a political tool.

Third, the so-called as sessment is totally inconsis tent with the actual situa tion in Xinjiang, and finds no support. China pursues a people-centred approach, and upholds that living a hap py life is the primary human right, and has embarked on a human rights development path which conforms to the trend of the times and suits China’s national conditions. Xinjiang is a place which once suffered hugely from terror ist attacks. Yet, thanks to the efforts against terror ism and extremism in accor dance with law, Xinjiang has not had any terrorist incident in the past five years, and the human rights of people of all ethnic groups have been well protected.Thepeople in Xinjiang are in the best position to tell the world what the human rights conditions are like there. People who have been to Xinjiang all agree that Xinjiang is a wonderful land. Fair-minded people can tell right from wrong. In recent years, nearly 100 countries have spoken up at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, etc. every year to support China’s legitimate position on Xinjiang-related issues.More than 60 countries have sent a co-signed letter to express their serious concerns over the so-called assessment. Nearly 1,000 non-governmen tal organisations from across the world have written to the High Commissioner to ex press their opposition.

A: Again, I emphasise that the focus must be on the type of worm one wish es toAgainsteradicate.Tapeworms, I would recommend any drug the(preferablyPraziquantelcontainingassoleac tive ingredient in the tab let). I further advise that the caregiver avoids the use of any lead-based medi cation against Tapeworms. ADVANTAGE MULTI This product controls and efficiently prevents more parasites than oth er topical medications. The one serious disadvan tage here in the Tropics is that it does not kill ticks. Moreover, it has the draw back that it cannot be used in puppies younger than 7 weeks of age, nor can it be given to breeding, preg nant or nursing females.

Q: What are the brand names of these popular, multi-valent dewormers which can be bought over the counter (OTC). A: Based on safety, ef ficacy, number of worms targeted, and the ease of administration as well as the dog’s lifestyle (e.g., roamers, hunt ing dogs, house dogs/ kennel dogs, etc.), in addi tion to the par asites which have been ascertained to be prevalent in the dog’s environment, I would sug gest the following products - some of which should re quire a prescription.

Q: Which are the best dewormers for dogs and cats on the market?

TRIFEXIS This drug offers protec tion against three common intestinal parasites, as well as against Heartworms and adult fleas. The care giver can commence the anti-worm treatment when pups are 8 weeks old and weigh at least 5 pounds. Treatment must continue on a monthly basis.

H aving discussed in some detail im portant aspects of worm burdens and how to prevent/remove them in our companion animals, as well as preferring advice/ suggestions to caregivers who find it necessary and unavoidable to administer anti-helminthic at home, I wish to provide answers to some of the most fre quently asked and relevant questions on the use of de wormers, especially for the enlightenment of those caregivers who are remote ly located and may need to administer at home.

A: A veterinarian, Melissa Smith at the Fort Morgan Clinic in Colorado, answered this question by reminding us that some animals cannot tolerate the oral medications well, or they may have a food allergy problem with oral products. Consequently, topical medications are in dicated. In other cases, the animal’s skin may be too sensitive to a topical med ication, and therefore an oral delivery is preferred. Barring these issues, the owner ultimately de termines which is the pre ferred route to administer deworming medication to his four-legged wards.

Q: Which is better: an oral dewormer or a topical dewormer?

Q: Are natural prod ucts used as dewormers for pets, especially dogs? A: Yes, they may be used. The following rep resents suggested natural anthelmintics:Ground-up pumpkin seedsFresh garlic cloves (fegs)ClovesDried coconut or coco nutGroundoil carrots Apple cider vinegar

“And many people would know of the work that was done in the Mocha Arcadia market day, which we also funded. Many people would know of the exhibitions we have had, at Square of the Revolution and the avenue,” Alexander said, describing this as physical manifesta tions of their work. The organisation also sent out a statement in which it further defended itself and detailed more of its work. While they did not deny that staff were paid $42 million in 2020 as Jagdeo had laid out, IDPADA-G ex plained that staff provide a myriad of services to the African-Guyanese commu nity. But in response, the Vice President contended that Alexander’s statements left more questions than an swers. Jagdeo posed the questions in his statement, such as questions on how much of the $100 million

At a press conference two weeks ago, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo had raised questions about the spend ing of nearly half a billion dollars in State funds by the organisation and chal lenged IDPADA-G to show the monies were used uplift Afro-Guyanese.

But during a subsequent press briefing, IDPADA-G Chairman Vincent Alexander defended the or ganisation against Jagdeo’s assertions, stating that he is not paid for his work and that the Vice President is trying to vilify the entity. “We are proud of the fact that we are able to fund the night schools which have brought back chil dren into the loop of the ed ucation system. This we do in Georgetown and in the Corentyne. So that’s anoth er instance of the outreach.”

IDPADA-G received annu ally since 2019 was spent on salaries and details on those that were paid. “First off let me state that I have absolutely no intention of apologising to Vincent Alexander and he is free to take whatever course of action he wishes. AfroGuyanese still remain in the dark as it relates to the benefits of the close to half a billion dollars utilised. He should therefore provide de tails on the following.”

IDPADA-G CEO Olive Sampson Culture, Youth and Sport Minister, Charles Ramson Jr ...willing to have an independent auditor recheck documents

The International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly – Guyana (IDPADA-G) says its spend ing of approximately half a billion dollars has been com prehensively audited by the Central Internal Audit Unit of the Ministry of Finance. This was detailed in a let ter sent by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IDPADA-G, Olive Sampson, on Friday to Culture Youth and Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr. The Minister had writ ten Sampson on Wednesday last, requesting the organ isation to submit all finan cial records detailing how it spent some $500 million in State funds it had received since 2018. In response, the IDPADA-G CEO noted that the entity commits to ac countability for every cent received from any source. Adding that from the incep tion they have been account able, Sampson indicated the organisation has already been audited by the Finance Ministry’s Internal Unit for the period January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2021. “Since that audit investi gated receipts and disburse ment of funds by IDPADA-G, it fully investigated the ‘con cerns’ raised in your request to us. Therefore, all financial records you seek for the pe riod 2018 - 2021 were sub mitted to that Government audit team,” the correspon dence detailed. It went on state that the audit report has established that IDPADA-G’s disburse ment of funds was “proper and without cause for repri mand.”“The findings of the audit from 2018 to 2021 provided guidance on minor chang es to internal processes that have since been implement ed,” the CEO Nevertheless, explained.Sampson, in the interest of account ability, submitted a copy of the audit for the period 2018 through 2021 entitled ‘Investigation into Receipt and Disbursement of Funds by IDPADA – Guyana’. She further pointed out in the correspondence that the only period for which re ceipts and disbursements by IDPADA-G have not been audited is January 1, 2022 to present – a period of eight months.“Weare aware of the le gal provisions for financial exposures and audits of enti ties such as IDPADA-G Inc. However, as further demon stration of IDPADA-G’s commitment to accountabil ity, we are prepared, in this instance, to submit the rele vant records to an indepen dent auditor although statu torily this period is not due for an “Weaudit.areready to engage the appropriate government agency to mutually agree on such an independent audi tor and the necessary terms of reference for the peri od January 1, 2022 to the present. We look forward to meaningful engagement that would assuage your concerns,” the IDPAGA-G CEO outlined in response to the Culture Minister.

Submit financial records In light of recent dis closures in the public, Minister Charles had asked for all financial records from IDPADA-G includ ing, but not limited to, pay ment vouchers, payroll, con tracts, and receipts for all monies spent for the fiscal years from 2018 to the pres entThedate.Minister contended that the funds allocated to IDPADA-G is for the bene fit and empowerment of as many Afro-Guyanese as pos sible. But Ramson said the recent disclosures caused “grave concerns” that re quired closer examination.

“How much of the $100 million allocated annual ly since 2019 and $68 mil lion in 2018 was spent on paying salaries, who are in dividuals that were paid, what amounts were they being paid and how were they selected? How much of that sum was spent on rent al, who owns the buildings rented, and what process was used for the selection of the buildings?” Jagdeo ques tioned. Meanwhile, after this issue of its spending was brought to light, IDPADA-G last week disclosed that it distributed grant awards, valued at $100,000 each, to nine member organisa tions on Friday. A total of 24 projects were approved for grants to support communi ty-based initiatives that aim to promote justice, recogni tion, and sustainable devel opment within the African Guyanese community. …of UK Indian PM Tomorrow we’ll know for sure whether Sunak’s chances of becoming Britain’s PM were more than a snowflake’s chances of surviving in hell!! In a not-unrelated factoid, yesterday India surpassed Britain as the 5th largest economy in the world. When Britain conquered India, it was about the second largest – behind China. Britain not only drained that wealth to develop itself, but destroyed the Indian economy, that’s only now finally recovering. This is related to the 180,000 or so Conversative voters who’ve already made the decision - which just has to be announced!! Cause those 97% White Conservatives – with 44% over 65!! – are just the ones who remember fondly when “Britannia rules the waves – and the wogs!!” And resent that those same wogs have the temerity to show up at Britain’s shore penniless and - within one generation - become richer than the Queen!! What does that say about themselves?? Wouldn’t Sunak-as-PM be a living indictment of their racial stereotypes?? And now wanting to run the entire show?? Wot?!

After all, since Aug 2 2020, the same Opposition and their supporters and enablers from New York to Timbuktu have been cussing out the same diplomats as the very essence of “stink and dutty” for their role in and after the March 2 elections!! Following their “regime change” script, they were the ones responsible for “the illegally-installed cabal” – said so often that by now it’s pronounced practically as one word!! – that’s been running (and ruining!) Guyana for the last two years!! And are now constructing that “emerging apartheid state” we’ve been hearing about!! US Ambassador Sara-Ann Lynch in particular has come in for the bulk of the cuss-out “cuss down”? And there have even been strident demands made on the Biden Administration to have her fired!! So, what’d they talk about?? Did Sara-Ann ask Norton why they’ve been witch-hunting her?? Did Norton say, as Jagdeo reportedly told Vincent Alexander, “That’s just politics”? Unlike Alexander, did Sara-Ann say, “That’s okay??” Anyhow, it’s reported that elections and the voters list was raised by Norton and Ramjattan, GASP!!!! After all the cuss out at “western interference” in our elections, are these gentlemen suggesting that they “interfere” again?? What the heck’s going on?? So electoral interference (or blind eye on behalf of the PNC’s good – like between 1964 and 1985 – is kosher?? Dead: Cindy Jattan Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton

Gafoors freak accident

One week after a wom an was killed in a freak accident at the Gafoors Manufacturing Complex at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara (EBD), the Labour Ministry is con tinuing its investigation to determine if was avoidable. Speaking during a me dia engagement, Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton shared that the compa ny has been cooperating to complete the probe. As of now, information is still be ing gathered, after which technical officers will make an assessment of the inci dent.“An investigation is in process. The company has been cooperating from day one. There are some proce dural things that they have to do. They have to report the accident, fill up several forms and the investigation is continuing. It has not been concluded because we’re still gathering information. It was a tragedy that we have to review, whether it could have been avoided. My tech nical people who were on the site would advise me regard ing that matter,” Hamilton explained.Cindy Jattan of Grove, EBD, lost her life during the tragic accident. Initial re ports stated that the wom an was allegedly sitting un der a rack when it suddenly fell on her, causing her to re ceive injuries. It took some time for persons to come to her assistance and remove her from the debris. She was picked up and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre but re portedly died before reach ing the medical facility. She was pronounced dead on ar rival.Commenting on health and safety, the Minister ex pressed that it is a topic that should be extended beyond workplaces and into homes, where items such as gas cyl inders are also major haz ards.“What I can say re garding the extension of the health and safety mat ter is that as Guyanese, we have to change our culture and attitude to the mat ter. Health and safety in Guyana is a national matter that we have to address to gether. It is not just an em ployer-employee matter. It is for us who take things for granted because it has nev er happened,” he positioned. Earlier this year, the complement of labour offi cers was increased to 28 for enhanced monitoring for compliance. The labour laws were also being revised by a joint legal committee. After the revision of legislation for the labour sector, Minister Hamilton had contend ed that employers found in breach of the laws would be slapped with hefty fines for failure to meet the country’s regulations for their em ployees. As it stands, the fines for breaches are somewhat meagre, he had opined.

Health authorities alerted at Guyana-Brazil border – CMO

T o prevent cases of monkeypox from coming in through Guyana’s porous border with Brazil, health of ficials have been alert ed to avoid any potential spread.Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narine Singh shared that since there are some 39 crossing points, includ ing the Takutu Bridge, there is need to strength en systems along the bor der.“We know the border at Brazil is very, very po rous. There are about 39 crossing points so we have alerted the healthcare providers in those areas that if they see persons coming over, to activate the system. It’s really in creasing awareness and once there is a suspected case, to report the case to the Ministry of Health,” Dr Singh contended. The CMO shared that enhanced aware ness was activated at both the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and Ogle International Airport. However, the dis ease can only be detected if persons present with le sions.“You wouldn’t know if someone had monkey pox unless they were pre sented with lesions. What we’re doing is putting up posters at the ports of en try to alert persons that should they present with it, they should report to the authorities. Somebody could come in with lesions and they have long sleeve shirts and not report it. So, the thing is to sensitise persons at the airport.” Monkeypox would ap pear as a rash. Once in fected, a person can spend from seven to 21 days in incubation before the symptoms manifest. The acute skin rash may be present with maculopapular (flat based lesions) to vesicles (fluid-filled blisters), pus tules, and subsequent crusting affecting the dace, palms of the hand, soles of the feet and the rest of the body. It may be accompanied with headache, acute on set of fever, myalgia, back pain, asthenia and lymph adenopathy. Monkeypox virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminat ed materials such as bed ding.Monkeypox is trans mitted to humans through close contact with an in fected person or animal, or with material contam inated with the virus. It is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory drop lets and contaminated ma terials such as bedding or clothing.InMay 2022, several countries where monkey pox is not endemic report ed cases, including some countries in the Americas. Then in July 2022, the WHO Director General de clared the multi-coun try outbreak of monkey pox constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).Twopersons, a man and woman, have contract ed the disease respectively in Guyana. They were ad mitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital for treatment and both per sons are stable. These cas es were said to be unrelat ed. Presently, antiretro viral treatment is used but it is not widely avail able around the world. Guyana has made at tempts to procure some smallpox vaccines through the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO). These are manufactured by Bavarian Nordic but demand is at its peak. (G12)

My regret then was that even though Trinidad’s Sundar Popo had come out with his genre-originating chutney song, “Nana and Nanie”, in 1969, it was blanked. Unlike what he had done for “Pan” and “Tamboo Bamboo”, Eric Williams and the PNC studiously ignored subaltern Indian cultural creations. From the discussions and planning sessions in Guyana, Taan, Biraha, Quaseedas and Qawalis singing, for instance, was not seen as “cultural”. There was “The Inaugural Caribbean Festival of Arts as Prism” recently held virtually, in which someone thought I might have had something to say. This is what I would have said: PM Forbes Burnham conceptualised Carifesta 1 as early as 1966. Being President of the WI Student Union in England, and member of the League of Coloured People, the 1945 Manchester Pan-African Congress papers had deepened his perspective. As for multi-racial/ethnic British Guiana, he had written his sister in 1945: “I feel strongly about the Indian attitude, but the time has not come to antagonise a large section of the community before I am ready.”

At Independence in 1966, I was in secondary school when the ethnic cleansing of 1300 Indian Guyanese occurred in the “Wismar Massacre”, and sinking of the Sun Chapman with 43 African Guyanese dead was still raw. The designated “National Hero”, the flag with the Garveyite and Ethiopian African colours, made the national motto of “One People, One Nation, One Destiny” more of a threat than anything else. Burnham’s disbanding of the ethnically-balanced SSU formed by the departing British, and his firing of Major Raymond Sattaur, its designated head, were disturbing. The blatant rigging of the 1968 elections, wherein friends from my village’s African section, underaged like me, voted, personally convinced me of the denial of the political rights of Indian Guyanese, following economic rights in rice. For several reasons, 1969 was memorable for me. Even though from the countryside, I had done my “A” Levels in 1969-70 in Georgetown, and after teaching for a year at Bush Lot Secondary, WCB (1970-71), I taught at Central High School in 1971-72. I could observe firsthand the goings on of the urban elite that determined the fate of Guyana. There were two noteworthy political initiatives in 1969: Dr Jagan’s declaration that the PPP was now an “orthodox” political party, and the formation of a radical political group, RATOON, at UG by primarily African Guyanese intellectuals. This was new: the PNC was being opposed by individuals it assumed it “owned”. In early February 1970, Eric Williams grappled with Black Power protests that by end of April had precipitated an armed revolt by young army officers. I remember following the developments on my “pocket radio”. Between 16-26 February, Burnham had gathered intellectuals from across the Caribbean to a “Caribbean Writers and Artists Convention”, to plan a pan-Caribbean Conference, which was to be Carifesta 1. He then moved to pre-empt similar Black Power reactions here by supporting Stokely Carmichael’s RATOON/ASCRIA-sponsored visit in May for a seminar on Pan Africanists and Black Revolutionary Nationalists. A group of us students walked out of a meeting at Queen’s when Carmichael insisted that Indian Guyanese should organise separately. RATOON and the newly-formed Movement against Oppression (MAO), that grounded with ghetto youths, disagreed with Carmichael, but not ASCRIA.

In Guyana, the rural-based and unlettered Indians were beginning to knock on doors jealously guarded by the Coloured/African urban elite.

The shooting of Joshua Ramsammy in October 1971 signalled the PNC’s decision to “take on” the radicals violently, and further darkened the mood in Georgetown. The very politicised staff room of Central High, with Rudy Luck at the head, swirled with conspiracy theories that pointed to a PNC “big one”. The Police investigation went nowhere: in Jan 1968, Burnham had constructively fired the first Guyanese COP, Felix Austin, and replaced him with the more pliable Carl “Bolo” Austin. It was against this background that Indian Guyanese boycotted Carifesta 1 when Burnham contemptuously dismissed the recommendations of Indian leaders and organizations in Guyana – Hindu, Muslim and Christian - and used funds specifically designated for the Indian Repatriation Fund to construct the Cultural Center. This boycott was successful, even though, in the end, Dr Jagan caved in. Gora Singh and his mother Rajkumari Singh, and some artistes affiliated with her, participated – but to great opprobrium from the community they claimed to represent. I got to know Gora very well later in NYC, and he claimed (in writing) that while most performances were filmed, his was not, and Indians overall were peripheralised.

In July 2020, just before the then Government left office, businessman Glen Lall had filed legal proceed ings against the APNU/AFC Administration over its rush to finalise land deals despite elections being held and the National Recount showing their loss at the polls. The application alleged that the Government’s transfer of lands on June 11, 2020, was unlawful, ul tra vires, null and void. According to gazetted or ders, a number of private companies received prime land on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD). However, Lall’s case was dismissed in the High Court in August 2020. (G3)

The Government is still in the process of com ing to grips with all the land that the former A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Government sold to friends and family, while in office. This is according to Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, during an interview which was broadcast on social media. He made it clear, however, that even as the Government takes stock of the land sold out, it will con tinue to make an effort to recover these lands.

In a statement at the time, Attorney General Anil Nandlall had said that “A review of all leases, licens es and permissions to oc cupy public lands, grant ed since the 21st day of December 2018, will be con ducted. On the 21st day of December 2018, the APNU/ AFC Government was de feated by a No-Confidence Motion passed in the National Assembly. As a re sult, thereof, it was reduced to a caretaker status only.” Despite being toppled by a motion of no-confi dence that was tabled by the then PPP/C Opposition and was passed with a ma jority vote, the APNU/AFC Administration remained in office and instead of op erating in a caretaker mode in accordance with the Constitution, continued in a “business as normal” man ner.In fact, the coalition had challenged the passage of the NCM but it was validat ed by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in June 2019, which ruled that elec tions should be called with in three months as stipulat ed in the Constitution. But elections were not held un til March 2020 – some nine months after the CCJ ruling and more than one year af ter the passage of the mo tion. During that time, the caretaker coalition conduct ed many underhand deals including the massive give away of prime State lands to political affiliates. In fact, even after the March 2, 2020 elections, the APNU/ AFC Government, in its waning days, had trans ferred lands to a number of companies through the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL). At one point in 2020, the Government of Guyana had called in the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate the former APNU/AFC Government’s questionable transferals of State land.

After the elections, (they) put out a gazette signed order to transfer (land) to over 100 persons, plots of land in Linden, to cronies,” Jagdeo said. According to Jagdeo, a lot of the land was distrib uted to friends and family of the former APNU/AFC Government, not to ordi nary people who were strug gling to get a piece of land. He challenged persons to check who benefitted from most of the land distribu tion, noting that in many cases they were politically connected.

COMPULSION VS ADDICTION Compulsions are repeti tive behaviours with no ra tional motivation, but are often engaged in to reduce anxiety. Either way, if watching porn be comes problematic, there are ways to try to regain control.

Simply viewing or enjoy ing porn doesn’t make one addicted to it, nor does it re quire fixing. On the other hand, addictions are about a lack of control — and that can cause significant prob lems. The Porn habit may be a cause for concern if: * The amount of time spent watching porn keeps growing*Feeling as though needing a porn “fix” — and that fix gives a “high” * Feeling guilty about the consequences of view ing*pornSpending hours on end perusing online porn sites, even if it means neglecting responsibilities or sleep * Insisting that roman tic or sexual partner views porn, or acts out porn fanta sies, even though they don’t want to * Being unable to enjoy sex without first viewing porn* Being unable to resist porn even though it’s dis rupting your life.

P ornography has al ways been with us, and it’s always been controversial. Some people aren’t interested in it, and some are deeply offended by it; others partake of it occasionally, and others on a regular basis. It all boils down to personal preference and personal choice. It’s important to note that “porn addiction” isn’t an official diagnosis rec ognised by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), but experiencing an uncontrollable compulsion to view porn can be as prob lematic for some people as other behavioural addic tions. Since the existence of “porn addiction” is not rec ognised by the APA, no de finitive diagnostic criteria guide mental health profes sionals in its diagnosis. Since people may be re luctant to talk about porn, it’s difficult to know how many people enjoy it on a regular basis, or how many find it impossible to resist. A Kinsey Institute survey found that 9 percent of peo ple who view porn have un successfully tried to stop. This survey was taken in 2002, and it has since be come much easier to access porn via the internet and streaming services. This easy access makes it more difficult to stop watching porn, if watching porn has become a problem. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), a publication of the American Psychiatric Association, is used by healthcare profes sionals to help diagnose mental disorders. The DSM doesn’t recognise porn ad diction as an official mental health diagnosis, but research suggests that behavioural addictions are serious. One 2015 review article concluded that inter net pornography shares ba sic mechanisms with sub stance addiction. Research comparing the brains of people who compulsive ly view porn to the brains of people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol has pro duced mixed results. Other researchers suggest it may be more of a compulsion than an addiction.betweenThere’saddiction.athindifferencecompulsionand

SIGNS OF ADDICTION

It’s hard to say why viewing porn can some times escalate into an outof-control behaviour. People may start looking at porn because they like it, and watching it doesn’t seem to be a problem.

HARMFUL EFFECTS WITHOUT CONTROL OR TREATMENT

Untreated, compulsions or addictions can become a de structive force. Relationships, particularly romantic and sexual ones, may be negative ly impacted. Porn addiction may lead to: * Poor relationship quality * Lower sexual satisfac tion* Lower self-esteem * It can also lead to the loss of a career or to financial problems if ignoring responsi bilities or missing obligations or viewing porn at work; and is subject to disciplinary ac tion.Looking at porn isn’t al ways cause for concern. It could be a case of curiosity, or the person may genuinely en joy porn with no ill effects. But it may be a problem if people: *Watch while at work or at other inappropriate places and*Spendtimes increasing amounts of time watching porn *Are unable to keep up with their social, occupation al, or other important obliga tions *Are experiencing rela tionship difficulties *Have tried to cut back or stop, but can’t keep them selves away from it *Are showing signs of a compulsion or addiction. It may then be time to open the lines of nonjudgmen tal communication.

* Therapy If a compulsion or addic tion is suspected, it’s worth seeing a mental health pro fessional for evaluation. This may be especially helpful if you also have anxiety, signs of depression, or obsessive-com pulsive disorder (OCD).

Consider seeing a thera pist to discuss any concerns. They can come up with an in dividualised treatment plan to help you work through the concerns.

* Support groups Many people find strength in talking to others who have firsthand experience with the same issue. Ask a primary care physician, mental health professional, or local hospital for information on pornogra phy or sexual addiction sup port groups.

They may enjoy the rush it gives them, and find them selves wanting that rush more often. By then it may not matter that these viewing habits are causing a problem, or that they feel bad about it later; it’s that in-the-moment high they can’t resist. If they try to stop, it can be difficult to doThat’sso. how behavioural addictions sneak up on peo ple. Research shows that cer tain behavioural addictions, such as internet addiction, involve neural processes that are similar to substance ad diction — and that internet pornography addiction is com parable. It may start during a period when people feel bored, lonely, anxious, or depressed. Like other behavioural addic tions, it can happen to any one.

Depending on how porn is impacting one’s life, a thera pist may recommend individ ual, group, or family counsel ling. Be wary of therapists who claim to “specialise” in diagnosis and treatment of pornography. It’s difficult to “specialise” in a disorder that lacks a professionallyagreed-upon definition or uni formly outlined diagnostic cri teria.Counselling sessions would help to understand what caused the compulsion in the first place. A therapist can help persons to develop effective coping mechanisms to change their relationship with pornographic materials.

The Ministry is currently in negoti ation with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for funds to undertake rehabilita tion and expansion works along the East Bank Public Road, from Grove to Timehri which will further aid in achieving the infrastructural development goals of the “NotwithstandingMinistry.” the aforesaid negotiations, in order to ease the persistent fatigue caused to road users traversing along the Diamond/Grove area, the Ministry of Public Works have decided to urgently facil itate rehabilitative works in this area not only to ease traf fic congestion, but also improve transportation efficiency and road traffic safety at these loca tions,” Edghill explained. According to Edghill, the re medial work will include mill ing and resurfacing of the ex isting roadway, widening of roadway and construction of a bridge linking Third Avenue Diamond into Grove, EBD. “These works will aid in providing smooth and uninter rupted flow of vehicular traffic thru Diamond/Grove area, and provide an alternative route for drivers who are using the Mocha/Diamond Road link,” Edghill“Theexplained.construction of the bridge will eliminate the need for drivers having to connect to the public road in the vicinity of Diamond Main Access Road but rather at Jimbo Bridge, Grove, which is after the se verely congested section of the public road. Works are sched uled to be undertaken Saturday evening, September 3, 2022 thru Wednesday September 7, 2022.”The Government has been undertaking the upgrade and expansion of the two-lane road at Grove (from the entrance to Diamond Housing Scheme) all the way to Timehri. Previously, Edghill had said that work on this road would start this year. Some $2.1 billion was set aside in Budget 2022 for the widening and paving of the East Bank Highway from Grove to Timehri. And in July, a number of bids for the widening were opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).Based on the bids that were opened, at least four Chinese companies have bid to be pre qualified for the contract. They include China Railway First Group and China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group. Also, bidding was China Railway Construction (Caribbean) Company Limited. China Road and Bridge Corporation, another Chinese company, also submitted a bid. The Ogle-Diamond bypass project will see the construc tion of some 26 kilometres of road linking two of the coun try’s main thoroughfares. This new road link will also be con nected to key communities in Georgetown and along the East Bank of Demerara. These in clude Diamond, Mocha and Eccles – all on the East Bank – and Aubrey Barker Road in Georgetown. These connections will prove crucial in diverting traffic. It was announced in January of this year that Ashoka Buildcon Limited won the contract to construct the road, ahead of two other Indian companies. Ashoka has built a number of bridges and roads. According to the company’s website, it even built a bridge in 38 days, namely the Mandve Bridge near Pandharpur, India. The company said the bridge was supposed to be built in 12 months. (G3)

Although she did not use the word retirement itself, preferring to say she was “evolving away” from the sport, her plan is to end her glittering career this fortnight at her home major. Like every night she has appeared this week, Williams emerged on the court after being introduced as the “Queen of Queen’s” - the borough of New York where the tournament is held - in a speciallycommissioned video montage narrated by American rap star Queen Latifah. The A-Listers have been out in force on Ashe this week, with Vogue editor Anna Wintour and golf superstar Tiger Woods previously sitting in Williams’s box.On Friday night it was R&B singer Ciara and her husband Russell Wilson, who is one of the country’s biggest NFL stars, alongside members of Williams’s family.Elsewhere, tennis great Billie Jean King, film director Spike Lee, and actress Rebel Wilson were also watching. Williams wore the glittery, figure skating-inspired dress she had specially created for the tournament, along with diamond-encrusted trainers to add further pomp to the occasion.Right to the end, Williams put on a show for the almost capacity 24,000 crowd. The 40-year-old played some of her best tennis in a long while as she fought to prolong her career, putting on one final memorable show for those lucky enough to witness it.

Under the leadership of its President, Keavon Bess, and executives, the Guyana Bodybuilding Fitness Federation (GBBFF) have pushed the sport of bodybuilding/fitness to higher heights, and the results they have been receiving are a true testament to the time and energy they have put into the sport.Organising Secretary Videsh Sookram has noted that the next item on the GBBFF agenda is the staging of the annual “Mr Guyana” contest, which will close out the activities of 2022. In an interview with this publication, Sookram was asked about the GBBFF’s plans for the remainder of 2022, and he said, “The current plans for the bodybuilding federation right now? The last thing to close off the year is the Mr Guyana Championship…which will be in December, tentatively on the 17th December at the National Cultural Centre.” Relating that the athletes in Guyana have shown improvement in the last five years, Sookram has said he believes this is because the athletes are being exposed to international competitions, and when they see the packages presented by other athletes, it pushes them to constantly lift the standard of their bodies and physique. Sookram has admitted to being “really impressed” with the performance of the athletes at CAC 2022 in Barbados, their having bagged 12 medals and a PRO rank card. He believes this would now cause the athletes in the Caribbean to see Guyanese athletes as the ones to compete with, and be competitive against. “We have to seek other competitions. As it is right now, Darious Ramsammy is the current reigning MR GUYANA. He is seeking to do the Amateur Mr Olympia, and I hope that Mr Ramsammy gets the full support of the Ministry (of Sport) and of Corporate Guyana. He will be having the full support of the GBBFF,” SookramSookramshared.has detailed that, thus far, no athlete has reached out to compete in the Worlds Championship in November. However, with Ramsammy seeking to attend the Amateur Mr Olympia, Sookram is hopeful that Emmerson Campbell and Julio Sinclair would participate as well.

Williams was overcome with emotion when she was interviewed in the middle of the court, thanking her family, team, the crowd, and her fans across the world for their support over the “Iyears.thank everyone that’s here; that’s been on my side so many years, decades. Oh my gosh, literally decades,” said Williams, who played her first professional tournament as a 14-year-old in 1995. “But it all started with my parents, and they deserve everything; so, I’m really grateful for them.“AndI wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t [sister] Venus; so, thank you, Venus! She’s the only reason that Serena Williams ever existed.”Tomljanovic, who moves into the fourth round and plays Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, stepped to the side and applauded her opponent as she took the microphone.

A lado, a mount of the Master Z Racing Stables and champion horse of The Guyana Cup, that massive and prestigious horse meet that was held at the Rising Sun Turf Club in Region Five, West Coast Berbice, on Sunday, August 15, 2022, is expected to return to racing action in The President’s Cup, set to be run on Sunday, September 18, at that same venue. However, Wild Texas Tom, a superb mount of the Jagdeo Racing Stables, who had placed second in the feature race of The Guyana Cup and is fresh from the victory in the feature race of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club’s horse meet of August 28, 2022 at Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne, Berbice in Region Six, will be aiming to avenge its defeat by Alado when The President’s Cup event is held. In this publication’s recent interview with Glen Mohammed, a horse owner, trainer and news reporter from the twin-island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, Mohammed noted that the Kennard Memorial horse meet was good for equine racing in Guyana, as it sets up a mouthwatering clash in the President’s Cup. He also noted that the crowds attending horse racing activities in Guyana would give CPL cricket a “run for its money.”“This race (Kennard’s) was a reflection of how good the Guyana Cup was. This horse (Tom) ran second in the Guyana Cup, and now possesses a good race in the President’s Cup, where it will have a rematch with Alado…,” Mohammed explained. “You have (to thank) Kennard (for) staging such a race to get Wild Texas Tom on the footing they want to get to promote the President’s Cup,”he detailed. He added: “You (Guyana) have a very good quality of horses. The Guyana breeding industry have to take advantage of that, and the owners investing a lot of money and buying very good horses. They have good stock coming from Trinidad and the USA, racing in Guyana can only go on ‘the up’. They just have to try and get the regulations in place, and be regulated,” he advised. “Horse racing is one of the most popular sports in Guyana, and we have seen it continue to grow. It will give cricket some problems in time to come. This is a rural sport, and people enjoy coming,” Mohammed said. After The President’s Cup is held on Sunday, September 18, at the Rising Sun Turf Club in Region Five, another horse meet will be held on October 23 at the Kennard Memorial Turf Club, before the traditional Kennard Boxing Day horse meet is held on December 26 at that Bush Lot Farm venue. Brian Lara has re placed Tom Moody as head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2023 IPL season. Lara was part of the SRH team management last sea son, as a strategic advisor and batting coach, and this will be his first assignment as a head coach of a T20 team.

The understanding is that Moody and Sunrisers came to a mutual agreement to part ways. Moody was recently appointed director of cricket at Desert Vipers, one of the six franchises in the ILT20, which is scheduled to begin in the UAE in January 2023. Moody had returned to Sunrisers in 2021 as direc tor of cricket, with fellow Australian Trevor Bayliss as head coach. Once Bayliss left, after a dismal 2021 sea son in which Sunrisers fin ished last, with just three wins, the franchise appoint ed Moody as head coach, the second time he had held the post. In his highly success ful first stint, between 2013 and 2019, Moody had helped Sunrisers reach the playoffs five times, and win the IPL in 2016. However, Moody’s second stint as head coach was not successful. In 2022, Sunrisers finished eighth in the 10team tournament, with six wins and eight defeats. In the last two seasons, Sunrisers were the worst-performing team in the IPL in terms of wins: in 28 matches, they had nine victories, 18 defeats, and one tie. Moody would have been disappointed, consider ing Sunrisers had assem bled a well-balanced squad at the auction, before which they had retained three players: their captain Kane Williamson and the Indian pair of Umran Malik and Abdul Samad. In the first half of the sea son, Williamson got lucky at the toss, which played a big role in Sunrisers win ning five matches in a row. However, they slid down the points table just as quickly, with five consecutive defeats. Williamson’s poor batting form, coupled with injuries 223-7230-1 (Ext 55) to two key Indian players - T Natarajan and Washington Sundar - left Sunrisers frus trated. Those two injuries came immediately after a de feat against Gujarat Titans, which Moody said triggered “negative momentum” from which his team could never recover. “We were small mar gins away from being in a dif ferent position on the table, and that could’ve easily been in the top 4,” Moody said on May 22, after Sunrisers end ed their season with another defeat. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2022 A n improved sec ond-half perfor mance from the Junior Jaguars has result ed in back-to-back victories for this national under-17 football team in the ongo ing CONCACAF Qualifiers. The Junior Jags have romped to a necessary vic tory over St Martin on Saturday morning, and should stay in conten tion for a spot in the 2023 CONCACAF Under-17 Championships. Following a 4-0 vic tory over the Bahamas on Thursday, the Junior Jaguars hammered home three goals against St Martin, while simultane ously keeping their oppo nents at bay past the 8th minute. For this encounter, Head Coach Vurlon Mills opted for a playing XI which read: Duquain Samuels (Goalkeeper), Shakem Welcome (Captain), Swade Edwards, Gerry Burnette, Krishtian Louis, Seon Cato, Omar Sam, Matrim Martin, Ronaldo Adams, Shemaiah Samuels and Christopher Whitter, sig nalling three changes from their last game. Guyana took a while to find their footing, and paid the price for it, as St Martin opened the scoring in the 8th minute by way of an Adrien Jeremie goal. However, when Guyana did find their rhythm, it was Slingers FC’s Matrim Martin who found the back of the net in the 36th min ute to level the score for Guyana. The score remained 1-1 into the second segment, wherein Guyana’s perfor mance was significantly improved, as compared to their last two games. This was indicative by their ability to keep momentum and add to the scoresheet in the second half. Noah Kissoon capital ised on the misfortunes of the St Martin goalkeep er when, in the 69th min ute, he shot across the face of the goal and notched the ball into a corner for Guyana’s second. The third goal came off the boots of Bryan Wharton, who took a suc cessful long shot from out side the penalty area and found the back of the net in the 76th minute. With the victory, Guyana now have two wins from three games in Group A of the competition. However, Bermuda now lead Group A, with three wins from as many games. Guyana’s next game in the Qualifiers is against the Virgin Islands on Monday, September 5, beginning at 9.10am local time.

After three days of fierce basketball action against its sister services, the Guyana Defence Force has successfully defended its title as Inter-Services Basketball Champions.Thesoldiers fought hard on Friday afternoon, demonstrating high energy and swift action as the Guyana Fire Service team, clearly no walkover, did its best to overthrow the GDF on the court. Neither of these teams was defeated in the preliminary games against the Police and Prison Service respectively, thus they were contesting the finals. The three-day competition concluded with two games, the first being between the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Police Force, which saw Police taking the thirdplace trophy. GDF Lieutenant Jermaine Slater was adjudged the Most Valuable Player. The teams were congratulated for their participation in the tournament.

The Royals celebrating the wicket of Chamari Athapaththu Rachel Vincent is caught short of her crease

T he Guyana Amazon Warriors Women narrowly missed out on a spot in today’s Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) fi nal when they lost a match against the Barbados Royals by 4 wickets. Quiana Joseph of the Royals was the star of the show, as she waited out a tight bowling attack from the Amazon Warriors Women, and, with a late flurry at the end, got the Royals over the line with one over to spare. The Royals were pro verbially right on the mon ey from the beginning of the match when they won the toss and opted to bat first. However, slow bat ting again plagued the GAW Women. Batting at almost a run a ball, the first-wicket partnership be tween Rashada Williams and Chamari Athapaththu was broken by the Royals’ FatimaAthapaththu’sSana. knock of 19 runs from 18 balls, which included three 4s, coupled with Williams’s in nings of 17 runs from 29 balls, wasn’t the start the GAW Women had hoped for in this must-win match. Captain Stafanie Taylor remained the Warriors’ tower of strength, seeing yet another innings through to the end while remain ing unbeaten. Shemaine Campbelle joined forces with Taylor, and together they got the Warriors all the way to the 17th over, when things unfortunately fellTheapart.Royals’ stand-out bowler Shakera Selman was responsible for send ing Campbelle back to the dugout after her innings of 16 from 25 balls. Chedean Nation hit one boundary in her 11 from 13, before being caught by Aaliyah Alleyne off Chinelle Henry’s bowl ing in the 19th over. The final over of the Warriors’ innings must have been a nightmare for Taylor, as she watched batter after batter tum ble without much troubling of the score. First Rachel Vincent was run out as she and Taylor attempted a sec ond run; then, immediately thereafter, Shabika Gajnabi fell in identical fashion; and after getting in a single in the fourth delivery, CherryAnn Fraser was out LBW in the fifth ball to bring an anticlimactic end to the Warriors’ innings. While Shakera Selman picked up 2 wickets for 16 runs from 4 overs, Fatima Sana picked up two wickets for 27 runs in her 4 overs. And just as the Barbados Royals began to free their arms, back-to-back wick ets from Gajnabi put the Warriors back in the con test. Both Alleyne and Britney Cooper succumbed to Gajnabi’s bowling in the 6th over, for 10 and 0 runs respectively. However, Chloe Tryon and Captain Hayley Matthews refused to back down, as they kept the scoreboard ticking for the Royals.

Soon after, Tryon was also sent back to the dressing room for 19 runs; and Henry didn’t last much longer, as a turn around looked apparent for the female Warriors. It was then that Joseph went bang-bang off Karishman Ramharack’s bowling to tame the re quired score. Joseph did not look back, as she smashed 30 runs from 19 balls, con sisting of one 4 and two 6s, to get her team over the line in the final ball of the 19th over.Warriors’ bowlers Connell and Ayabonga Khaka had commendable returns, Connell going for 9 runs in her 4 overs that produced two wickets, and Khaka reaping a wicket for 11 runs from her 4 overs. Gajnabi also had a good outing with the ball, bowl ing 2-19 from her three, in clusive of one maiden over. As a result of this victo ry, the Barbados Royals will battle the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Women’s CPL final today, beginning at 3pm at Warner Park in St. Kitts and Nevis.
