resident Dr Irfaan Ali on Friday announced sweeping new benefits for homeowners, with lowered interest rates for banking and construction materials in the pipeline after Building Expo 2022.

The expo has returned after a hiatus, under the theme: “A New Frontier For Building a One Guyana” and is dubbed the blueprint of the future infrastructure.

It is a creative hub where investors, homeowners and businesses can engage on creative and smart housing.

In his address, Ali divulged that the expo defines imagination, innovation and positioning Guyana in a visual way to showcase Vision 2030. As such, in consultation, commercial banks have agreed that there will be no percentage requirement for loans under $6 million once persons qualify under the joint window system. Banks have also agreed that the interest rates will be reduced for housing loans under $9 million to now 3.8 per cent.

Additionally, for homes $6 million and lower, Government will support homeownership to give every builder the steel and one sling of cement. Secondly, for every other category over $6million until $25 million, two slings of cement will be provided.

“The journey to prosperity has begun. The journey is powered by one vehicle, One Guyana. Whether your political views are aligned with the Government or not, you have a seat in that vehicle,” he told Guyanese.

Growth

Since assuming office, Government has lifted the low-income mortgage ceiling from $8 million to $15 million. The NBS ceiling has been lifted from $12 million to $15 million. Value Added Tax has also been removed on construction items.

Non-performing loans improved from 11 per cent to 6.5 per cent. Loans to households improved to 13 per cent of total loans. Total loans grew by 20 per cent in less than two years, to $310 billion.

Mortgages grew by $16 billion or $21 per cent. Total lending to the construction sector was $15.6 billion as

of May 2022 - a 50 per cent growth.

He spoke of the need for boldness and pushing boundaries to achieve the strategies for the country's

future. Economic diversification, social transformation, prosperous development, environmental responsibility and security are the principles being worked on for Vision 2030.

The infrastructural transformation must be linked to human transformation and life-changing upliftment, improvement of livelihoods and societal changes. Economic diversification will bring about better paying jobs and better living for Guyanese, the

All of this is being undertaken on a scale never before embarked on, requiring best practices and expertise.

overnment’s announcement at the opening of International Building Expo 2022, that tangible support would be provided for homebuilders, is indeed a “journey to prosperity”, as President Dr Irfaan Ali accurately puts it.

This journey incudes 1) for homes $6 million and lower: support of steel and one sling of cement; 2) for every home over $6 million, up to $25 million: two slings of cement; 3) no percentage requirement for loans below $6 million; 4) interest rates will be reduced to 3.8 per cent for housing loans under $9 million.

To quote the President: “The journey to prosperity has begun. The journey is powered by one vehicle, One Guyana.

Whether your political views are aligned with the Government or not, you have a seat in that vehicle.”

If one can recall, the Opposition APNU/AFC had scoffed when, during the campaign, the PPP declared it would be delivering 50,000 house lots during the next five years, were it to get into office. In its previous iterations, the housing sector was one of its glowing successes, and it was not coincidental that much of that success occurred under the watch of Irfaan Ali, who was then the Housing Minister. With him becoming President on Aug 2, 2020, the promise was almost guaranteed, since he knows exactly what needs to be done.

And now, just over two years later, we can see from the trajectory of house lots’ allocation that the goal is well within sight. This compares with the 7089 lots allocated over the five years the APNU/AFC coalition was in office. However, the Government is not stopping at house lots, but has set its sights on their owners becoming home owners. It has done this by encouraging easier access to loans, with lower interest rates; increasing the number of institutions granting mortgages with the authorisation of the Bank of Baroda to enter the mortgage market; and reducing taxes on construction and building materials.

It was previously announced that New Building Society has been persuaded to grant loans of up to $6 million with an interest rate of four per cent; $6-12 million @ 5.9 per cent, and $12-15 million @ 6.25 per cent. This was against a background of Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh having introduced the Income Tax Mortgage Interest Relief back in 2013. Any individual taking out a mortgage of up to $30 million for the purchase of a home would be able to deduct the interest paid on the mortgage from their taxable income.

Immediately, homeowners will benefit significantly. Since, in the early mortgage, most of the payments are applied to interest on the mortgage, these payments would now act to raise the “non-taxable” income of the homeowner from the present $720,000 by the total interest paid for the year.

But the benefits from the Government’s overall facilitation of housing for the entire population go far beyond the tax exemption etc. One of these is that a mortgage is a form of long-term forced savings. Many persons have great difficulty in saving directly from their pay checks or wages, which is not just a problem for the individual, but for the nation.

Developing countries need savings to make investments, and when individuals take out mortgages, the banks can count on a steady income stream, which can be invested. For the home owners, rather than paying rent, they accumulate increasing equity in their houses; which, historically, has always tended to go upwards. Home ownership also has immediate spinoff benefits for the rest of the economy, as owners seek to furnish and constantly upgrade their properties. Businesses that cater to this trade typically employ a large number of unskilled persons, as well as give a boost to local manufacturers of furniture and other household goods. The NDCs can now collect rates and taxes to provide various services to the area.

But just as important are the social benefits that give families a sense of stability and security. The moment someone owns a home, the family acquires pride in home ownership, and typically sees itself as having a stake in the community. This leads to the development of social capital in the form of trust between residents.

Advances in the health sector of Guyana (Part 1) Dear Editor, A letter appearing in a section of the media under the title “The healthcare system in Guyana is fractured and needs major surgery” provides an opportunity to highlight some advances made in the health sector of Guyana.

In several public engagements over the last two years, much information has been provided in regard to Government’s plans for the health sector, all being relevant to the matters the letter-writer raised. The MoH does need to improve communication with the public; because, clearly, the information we have been repeatedly sharing does not seem to be reaching persons who are interested in its receipt, including the media.

Further information on the Pediatric and Maternal Hospital would be provided in a few days’ time, when the President and the Minister of Health turn the sod in a matter of days.

From information already publicly provided by the President, the VP, and the Minister of Health in several public statements, the pediatric and maternal hospital would be staffed and equipped to provide specialised services to deal with a wide scope of medical interventions for children and pregnant women, and for complicated gynaecological conditions. The hospital would respond to children with cardiology, neurology, nephrology, oncology and other major complicated medical conditions. With this hospital, there ought to be little to no need for children with complicated medical conditions and women with complicated ob/gyn conditions to seek overseas medical care. Diagnostic imaging would include MRI. Six new regional hospitals being constructed would be staffed and equipped to provide all Level 4 Package of Services that Guyana articulated and have publicly presented at several public events, the last one being on Monday and Tuesday, July 18/19. The PAHO/WHO have affirmed that the Level 4 Package of

Services for Guyana is a comprehensive package. These hospitals would add 450 high-quality beds to Regions 2,3,4,5 and 6, with operating theatres, ER, ICU, HDU and NICU services.

There are major upgrades that would begin soon at the GPHC and at Linden and New Amsterdam hospitals, bringing their standards to being among the highest in Caricom. Similarly, the Bartica, West Demerara and Suddie hospitals are to be replaced by new hospitals, and resources are being mobilised for a new National Psychiatric Hospital.

Already, major rehabilitation work has occurred at Leonora, Mabaruma, Port Kaituma and Lethem hospitals.

All these hospitals - the new ones and the ones for upgrade - are being built to international standards.

International codes and standards such as IBC, Eurocodes, ASHRAE, NFPA, etc., are required in their construction. While most persons would not have knowledge about such codes and standards, it is reassuring that international standards are being enforced for the construction of all new hospitals in Guyana.

All hospitals would be equipped with elevators, and HVAC, hot water, steam etc., wherever required for services, would be available as part of the infrastructure. Whether hot water would be available in non-clinical areas is a policy issue Guyana would need to determine.

Health facilities must meet the highest possible standards. Indeed, old hospitals in Guyana did not meet those standards. Some of the newer constructions, such as the GPHC Emergency Building, the In-Patient Medicine Building, and The National Public Health Reference Lab, were in accordance with these standards, but periods of poor maintenance have affected optimal functioning.

Additional resources are now permitting Guyana to demand higher standards.

While building standards are indispensable for quality healthcare,

clinical, medical and nursing standards are also important. Gradually, Guyana moved towards introducing and delivering healthcare in accordance with treatment guidelines that have been tested, tried, and improved in developed countries. By 2010, most diagnosis and treatment followed international guidelines, but for Guyana, this is a work in progress.

Much effort went into enshrining these standards between 2000 and 2015. Much of the progress was stymied for a period of time, but the public health sector is working towards ensuring that standards and protocols that work well in jurisdictions such as the USA are standardised in Guyana. It will take time to get it all right.

To accelerate progress towards the highest standard of clinical practice, Guyana has entered partnerships with world-class institutions such as Mount Sinai, Northwell, Vanderbilt, McMaster etc. Regular clinical audits are now being conducted to ensure standards and guidelines are being implemented.

EMS is a work in progress at this time. An Emergency Medical Service (EMS) that is well equipped with ambulances and staffed with Emergency Medicine Technicians (EMT), such as the EMS in the USA, is a significant need. We expect a fully functional EMS in Guyana by 2025. Before 2001, there was not even a semblance of an EMS or EMT service in Guyana.

Although efforts were made after 2001, EMS remains, by and large, an underdeveloped service.

Recent efforts have accelerated advances that began in 2001 towards a high-quality National EMS. The majority of patients picked up in Region 4 in 2021 and 2022 so far have been by an EMT-led ambulance service operated by GPHC and the Fire Service. Since the start of EMS in Guyana, more than 20,000 persons have been served by an EMT-led ambulance service, with an average of 5,000 per year in the last three years.

Dear Editor, A cricketer who is a coach is now criticising pitches in the Caribbean for his failure. The West Indies team failed miserably against the Bangladesh touring team, and as the West Indies team prepare to play against India, Coach Phil Simmons is trying to keep his job.

After the West Indies team were humiliated by Bangladesh, expectations were sky high that the better players who are not in the team would have been selected to play against the star-studded Indian cricket team. Shimron Hetymer and Chandrapaul Hemraj are two outstanding players in all forms of cricket, but the peculiar selectors are so insular that they are not considering these players

to play for the West Indies team.

The haters are complaining that Shimron Hetymer is not physically fit. However, it cannot be denied that he is the best fielder in the world when on the boundary. He is one of the fastest in the outfield, and is the safest catcher when fielding. He also was a successful captain, having won the Under-19 World Cup title for the West Indies.

The Guyana Cricket Board and our journalists must make consistent calls for Hetymer to be included in the West Indies team.

He is a better batsman than any of the players in the present team.

Chandrapaul Hemraj is a consistent opening batsman. He is a utility player who is a useful spinner and

an outstanding fielder.

Is Rahkeem Cornwall fitter than these two players?

India are fielding a young team, with several of their world class players being rested. However, the experienced standing skipper Shikhar Dhawan, together with Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and the master all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, is capable of making enough runs to win matches.

India’s bowling would be heavily strengthened with Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal, along with the quick bowlers Momhamed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel.

India would start as hot favourites to win, as the

West Indies have not won a series against India in almost 20 years. West Indies lost miserably against Bangladesh, as they were whitewashed. With their morale being low, the West Indies would have to select the best players in the Caribbean, and get back to their winning ways. As the ODI Series gets underway in Port of Spain, all eyes would be on the depleted and poorly-performing West Indies team.

Criticisms against the Guyana pitch at Providence were uncalled-for. Our batsmen would have a Herculean task to score runs so as to give the bowlers a chance to win. India look like the winners in the first match.

Why no proactive approach towards ensuring diversity, inclusion, equality?

Dear Editor, I express my thanks to co-organiser Dr Vibert Cambridge for his reply to the concerns that I have raised. If his remarks are credible, then he must examine why Indo-Guyanese at home and abroad did not apply to participate in this international cultural folk symposium and festival. And why didn’t the organisers take a proactive approach towards ensuring diversity, inclusion and equality?

They should also seriously examine the ethnic composition of the organising committees, to ensure inclusion and diversity.

Therein lies the problem. The organisers are: University of Guyana, Moray House Trust, the Festival City 50th

Anniversary Committee, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, Guyana Speaks, The Guyana Cultural Association of New York Inc., etc - all Afro-Guyanesebased organisations. There is no Indo-Guyanese-based organisation or institution among the collaborators.

I hate to say it, but this exclusion reminds us of the long history of marginalisation of Indo-Guyanese, which is driven by race and politics. Dr Cambridge and his organising committee should be sensitive to diversity, and should become pro-active in a quest towards inclusion and diversity. No ethnic group should be regarded or treated as a footnote.

As a matter of fact, His Excellency Dr. Ali’s support mostly comes from the other religious class structures across Guyana, so what is this big fuss?

This training programme and introduction of an EMTled ambulance service is being presently rolled out in Regions 3 and 5, and would be introduced in Region 6 in January 2023. Training of personnel is presently being conducted.

With the help of Vanderbilt University, one of the renowned universities and medical centres in the USA, Guyana established an Emergency and Trauma Medicine Residency programme. This post-graduate training programme is presently headed by Dr. Zulfikar Bux. There are now several Guyanese specialists in ER medicine who work at the GPHC, New Amsterdam, Diamond and West Demerara hospitals; and, hopefully, in the years to come, more ER-certified specialists would be managing every ER Department in Guyana.

Guyana introduced the first-ever Caricom Residency Programme for ER Nurses. This programme is being expanded, and more of these certified nurses would be assigned to ER Departments around

the country. Several doctors from several Caricom countries have completed their ER and other residencies in Guyana. The ER programme in at least one Caricom country is led by a doctor who completed residency in Guyana.

The GPHC’s Institute for Health Science Education (IHSE), in collaboration with UG and many of the top universities in the world, presently conducts post-graduate training in 16 areas. ER medicine is only one area. General Medicine (Internal Medicine), Ob/ Gyn, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Radiology, Psychiatry are among the many post-graduate programmes at the IHSE. The IHSE also leads post-graduate training in Nursing, with such programmes as anesthetic nursing, neonatology and cardiology.

Like many hospitals around the world, GPHC has many problems. But for those who know the hospital before 2000, the GPHC is a far different hospital.

I have seen many other Presidents, diplomats and important personalities in our society dressed in a manner depicting the religious or cultural heritage and observance of the numerous holidays, and no attention was given to them.

I can recall vividly that my late headmaster Van Rossom, one of the most important persons in my life, used to wear his kurta and dhoti, and was integrally involved in the rituals and festivities with his Hindu, Christian, and Muslim brothers and sisters, and he was most welcome to do so.

Today, we tend to look at things in a different manner, and make pronouncements without understanding the potential harm and cultural divide those pronouncements can create in this beautiful multi-cultural society of ours.

The spirit and significance of Eid-Ul-Adha was felt around the world. In Guyana, the Muslims delivered portions of beef and mutton to over one hundred thousand families countrywide, irrespective of ethnicity, creed or political persua-

sion. Isn’t this an amazing act of compassion and goodness?

I was present when His Excellency delivered his speech to the Saudi Minister and visiting business delegation. The President did not mince words, but was forthright and direct. His Excellency understands the culture and how the Saudi nationals operate, hence he challenged them to establish an office locally to facilitate the smooth flow for prospective trading activities. My take on most of the opinions expressed in the media was of a vexed political nature.

Editor, in the past I did business with the Saudis, and I can say with assurance that they will not come to Guyana to do any form of long-term investment.

The Saudi-Arabs want to get maximum profits in the shortest possible time with minimum investment.

Unlike Guyanese businessmen, they are not prepared to wait ten years or longer for a return on investment.

Adding or subtracting fractions with like denominators To add or subtract fractions with unlike, or different denominators, you have to change them into fractions with common or like denominators. This process is called finding the common denominator.

Example: Add

Subtract To find a common denominator in these fractions, first: look at the denominators, 2 and 12. What number is a multiple of both 2 and 12? A simple way to find the common multiple is to multiply the two numbers. 2 x 12 = 24. In some cases, there is a smaller number that is a common multiple that would be easier to work with. In these examples, 12 is a lower common multiple than 24, so it will work as your common denominator. In each fraction, multiply the original denominator to make it become the common denominator. Then multiply the original numerator by that same number.

Cummings asserted that the “astronomical development” is supported by the vision and steadfastness of the agency.

In 2021, 961 applications were approved for enterprises to establish their presence. Some 452 applications have been approved this year thus far, or 90 per cent.

The Ministry has dared to be innovative, with the 3D printing technology.

This is the first time such advancement has been used in South America and the Caribbean - another pioneering feat in the country's books.

With all of these developments, Rodrigues said her Administration has remained people centric and this is reflective in the distribution of 5000 house lots over this weekend in places like Great Diamond, Grove, Non Pareil and MetenMeer-Zorg.

Focusing on Silica City, a low carbon smart city project, she said they are also keeping with sustainable goals and bringing life to Guyana's low carbon path-

way. It will incorporate sophisticated urban planning, disaster prepared with aesthetic building designs. The Minister noted that this is the epitome of visionary.

“Silica City is no longer just a concept. It will soon become a stunning reality as you will see. Silica City is central to this International Building Expo…Silica City will present the transformational change that will bring life to Guyana’s low carbon development pathway. President Ali has put together a team of urban planners, architects, financial planners, and environmentalists to develop a masterplan and involved one of the best planning groups in the world as consultants,” she divulged.

Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Paul Cheong said this expo brings evidence of Government's commitment to the sector and showcases the trajectory of development. This can allow the private sector to work in tandem to support the construction and building industry. To the companies from abroad, Cheong placed support from the private sector to bring these investments to fruition.

Snatching of Speaker’s Mace

National Assembly suspends 8 Opposition MPs

T

he National Assembly in the wee hours of Friday adopted a recommendation from the Parliamentary Committee of Privileges thus effectively suspending eight A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Opposition Members of Parliament who participated in the infamous Mace grab and disruptions of the National Assembly sitting on December 29, 2021.

The report from the Privileges Committee was laid in the National Assembly during Thursday’s sitting which ran past midnight.

The Committee was tasked with considering a Privilege Motion, which was tabled by Government Chief Whip Gail Teixeira and stated that the eight Opposition Members on December 29, 2021, attempted to prevent the second and third readings of the Natural Resources Fund Bill No 20 of 2021, conducted themselves in a gross disorderly, contumacious, and disrespectful manner, and repeatedly ignored the authority of the Assembly and that of the Speaker, and

thereby committing contempt and breaches of privileges.

After meeting on five occasions and considering the evidence, the committee recommended suspensions against the MPs in its report. That report was tabled and debated in the National Assembly and sometime around 01:00h on Friday, it was adopted following a majority vote by the Government’s side.

This now paves the way for suspension of Opposition Chief Whip Christopher Jones, Ganesh Mahipaul, Sherod Duncan and Natasha Singh-Lewis for four consecutive sittings each over their

attempts to disrupt the passage of the NRF Bill and ignoring the authority of the speaker.

MPs Annette Ferguson and Vinceroy Jordan are suspended for six consecutive sittings over severe and egregious violations by removing the Parliamentary Mace from its rightful position not only damaging the object but also injuring and assaulting a staff of the Parliament Office.

Meanwhile, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, who entered the communication control room of the Arthur Chung Conference Centre and destroyed several pieces of au-

dio-visual equipment, is suspended for six sittings.

Additionally, Maureen Philadelphia is also facing a suspension for six consecutive sittings for verbally assaulting a Parliament staff.

However, prior to the House approving the suspension, Opposition Member Khemraj Ramjattan objected to the Privileges Committee’s report being heard, citing among other things, that a case had been filed in the court by the Opposition to block the National Assembly from adopting the suspension.

“This shouldn’t move further because of the fact that there has been court action filed and in keeping with your [previous] ruling… once in a court of law, it becomes sub judice [for the National Assembly to move forward with],” Ramjattan posited.

But this objection was set aside by House Speaker Manzoor Nadir, who used his discretion to proceed with the motion and recommendation.

ne of the challenges in governing a divided country like ours is how’d you please “the people” when the people don’t see themselves as “a people”. Good for us, this problem isn’t confined to our dear mudland. In fact, it’s the default situation in the world, countries, villages and even in families!!

Remember when mom favoured her favourite son more than you?!! And that’s the rub, isn’t it?? Even when the Government tries to be even-handed, we’ll still compare and get bent outta shape!!

So, it’s up to us citizens to pick the fake news from the real news before we get our dander up. Now, don’t get your Eyewitness wrong; NO ONE can be absolutely fair, even when trying. And when it comes to Governments, since most of them are more concerned with filling their own pockets than the pockets (even the bellies!) of the people, you gotta pay great attention to what you’re being told. Especially by whoever’s in Opposition, since it’s their job to poo-poo the Government’s performance.

But, as we know to our cost – several riots, mass murders and burning down of whole sections of our country as starters – folks on the ground are all subject to what’s called “confirmation bias”. We hear what we wanna hear, especially in our Guyana, which’s been poor so long we just can’t seem to keep our heads above water. It’s easier to believe the Government’s helping only THEIR people, while WE stagnate or fall further behind.

Take a challenge; ANY challenge: let’s say roads. If we’re honest, there isn’t a community in Guyana where roads aren’t in the most horrible condition. But we personally don’t go into EVERY community in Guyana, do we? Especially in areas where PEOPLE LIKE US aren’t living. So, when we’re told the Government’s fixing THEIR roads, we get all bent out of shape!! And since Aug 2, 2020, when Granger reluctantly stepped aside, that’s all the PNC Opposition and their lackeys have been doing: inciting their supporters with daily harangues about them being neglected. And in our context, claiming explicitly that the Government’s RACIST!!

In Guyana, of course, there’s no more incendiary charge than that!!

So, what does the Government do?? Well, for one, throw out facts of the Government’s interventions in Opposition strongholds, which in Guyana means African Guyanesedominated areas!! But from what just came out of a heated clash in our National Assembly between our Public Service Minister Sonia Parag and PNC MP Flue-Bess, how dare the Minister defend the Government’s performance against the charges of discrimination and racism!??!

It's expected from all Governments!! So, why lie about it and provoke hostilities?? The ERC’s gotta be reconstituted to deal with the provocative harangues!! …in banking One of the other provocative claims the PNC Opposition’s been making for years under PPP Governments is that banks discriminate against THEIR supporters to refuse loans.

Implying the PPP’s responsible!! And that’s why they’re stagnating economically. But is this really true? Let’s look at some facts. After Burnham seized power in 1968, he NATIONALISED all banks, and, for the next two decades, gave out so many loans to his supporters that the Guyana National Cooperative Bank went bankrupt. Where did all that money go?

And when the PPP took over, and private banks reentered the picture, wasn’t the Trini-based Republic Bank from then the biggest bank?? Were they controlled by the PPP? And then Banks DIH opened up Citizens Bank; was that PPP controlled? We won’t even talk about Globe Trust!!

And why didn’t the PNC, between 2015 and 2020, accept applications to have an African-owned bank open up??

Guyanese Sabga recipient Shyam Nokta sets up foundation to work with youths on environmental issues

G

uyanese businessman and environmentalist Shyam Nokta, who is the recipient of the prestigious Anthony N Sabga award, has established a foundation to work with young Guyanese on issues relating to the environment.

The award is meant to recognise and reward excellence in the Caribbean region, and create an awareness of the significant work done in the region that benefits Caribbean people, and all people worldwide.

Launched in 2005, prizes are awarded in the spheres of Arts & Letters, Entrepreneurship, Science & Technology, and Public & Civic Contributions.

Nokta, an environmental protection consultant, is one of five recipients this year. He was recognised as a leading player in the environment and natural resources sectors.

At the award ceremony hosted on Friday at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown, Nokta pointed out that there is a growing recognition that the private sector has an important role to play in the global response to the climate crisis.

He noted that this award now provides him with a new platform to promote what his com-

pany, Environmental Management Consultants (EMC), has been doing already but also to raise awareness on the environment and issues surrounding the environment, especially among young people.

“They are the next generation of environmental leaders, conservationists

and entrepreneurs. In this regard, working with several prominent Guyanese environmental leaders, I’ve set up the EMC Foundation that will be working especially with young people and those who are passionate about the environment on issues relating to environmental awareness and

education,” Nokta disclosed.

The Guyanese environmentalist used the opportunity to expressed his appreciation to persons who have contributed to his success over the years. He especially recognised his father, former Local Government Minister Harripersaud

Nokta, who aroused his passion for nature and the environment from an early age.

He also mentioned persons in his professional career including former President and now Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo under whose tenure he got the opportunity to work in the area of climate change and played a role in the creation of Guyana’s historic Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) as well as the 2009 deal with Norway.

“I’ve had the opportunity to make a career and successful business, working in an area that I’m passionate about – the environment,” he posited.

According to Nokta, his company has grown far beyond what was envisioned and he credited this largely to his staff.

“The work that we do, providing environmental services and promoting green growth is relevant to Guyana but also the wider Caribbean. Today, as we look at how our countries are approaching development, the different issues that we have to grapple with on the development agenda but at the same time, how we prepare ourselves for certain global challenges such as climate change, it requires us to all

work together,” he noted.

At Friday’s ceremony, President Dr Irfaan Ali presented the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence to Guyana’s recipient Shyam Nokta and Suriname’s recipient Anusksha Sonai.

The Head of State lauded Nokta for his selflessness, describing him as a “contributor to society”.

President Ali also outlined that recognition such as the Anthony N Sabga award drives people in the region to excellence.

“There is something in the region that regional citizens can work towards.

There is something in the region that recognises and celebrates the accomplishment of excellence, and that is the value that these awards bring,” he asserted.

While Nokta was awarded the prize in the category of Entrepreneurship, Sonai, who was awarded the prize in the category of Public and Civil Contributions, shared her award with Dr Kim Jebodhsingh from Barbados.

The other awardees included Marlon James for Arts and Letters from Jamaica and Professor Christine Carrington for Science and Technology from Trinidad and Tobago.

Fire destroys 2 homes, 8 persons homeless

T

wo separate fires on Friday completely destroyed two homes at Kuru Kuru Sandpit Squatting Area, SoesdykeLinden Highway; and Coomacka Mines, Linden, leaving eight persons displaced.

The first fire was reported at about 01:00h and involved a one-flat wooden building owned and occupied by 29-year-old Onika Jacobs and her family of six at Kuru Kuru Sandpit Squatting Area, SoesdykeLinden Highway.

It is suspected that the fire started after a curtain came into contact with a lit candle. The Fire Service said the curtain ignited

and spread to the entire building.

The occupants of the building used buckets of water to extinguish the fire before the arrival of the Guyana Fire Service.

However, the building and its contents were destroyed, leaving the seven persons homeless.

Jacobs in an interview with another section of the media, said she had left her children at home and went out, when she received a call that her house was on fire. The woman said she immediately rushed home.

“I am a single mother and I work very hard… now, we are homeless. We

only have the clothes that we had on… I can’t catch myself. We don’t get current, so my son say he light the candle and the lamp.

He said [he], didn’t know the fire was burning until he started feeling it on his face...” Jacobs explained.

She said that based on what her son told her, he had to leave everything and save himself because before he knew it, the entire house was engulfed in flames. Jacobs said her son barely made it out of the house before the roof caved in.

Meanwhile, at around 12:00h on the same day, the GFS was alerted to a fire at Delon’s Sports

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fire was a result of a malicious act by person(s) unknown.

As a result of the fire, a quantity of clothing and a

mattress were destroyed.

One stabiliser, one wooden bed frame, a freezer, and the entire roof of the building were also damaged.

Neighbours used buckets of water to extinguish the fire before the arrival of the Fire Service.

According to the Fire Service, due to the location of both fires, the Guyana Fire Service had much difficulty gaining access as the terrain was not conducive to their heavy-duty appliances. (G9)

Opportunities abound, Guyanese “must seize the moment” – New Hayven founder

hirty years after the first merchant bank was licensed in Guyana, the New Hayven Merchant Bank on Thursday opened its doors to assist investors and small businesses in the country’s growing development.

Founder of New Hayven, Floyd Haynes underscored that in the presence of opportunities and growing demands for investment, the ability to finance ventures is missing from the equation. It is a gap which the bank will be addressing.

“It is that gap that we sought to fill. That was the impetus for starting New Hayven…It is obvious that there is huge capital gap or

money gap. In other words, there simply isn’t enough money to finance the transformation and development of this country in country.

So, some of those monies will come from multilaterals, friendly governments but it’ll be a loan. But a large part of that has to be private capital and that’s where we see New Hayven playing a crucial role,” Haynes underlined.

The founder added that the strides to establish this merchant bank was years in the making but comes at a time when it is greatly needed.

“This isn’t something that was handed down overnight. It was hard work…There is a tide in

the affairs of nation and Guyana’s tide is at its flood.

We, as Guyanese, must seize the moment. There has never been a time in the history of Guyana when there were more opportunities for Guyanese and Guyanese-based businesses. Opportunities abound.”

Chief Executive Officer Kurt Kisto said the new institution will connect investments with the rapid growth to be witnessed in the near future.

“Our mission is to create value for our clients by providing investment services to innovative solutions utilising and understanding the global strategy to connect with the local opportunities and ensure all our

It requires us to understand what defines the diversification that we’re talking about. If you try to understand diversification as financial diversification, you will fail. Health Ministry records 80 new COVID-19 cases …955 active infections being monitored

T

otal infections of COVID-19 in Guyana have reached 66,332, after another 80 new cases were reported on Friday.

There are still 1268 confirmed deaths, with five persons in the Intensive Care Unit. From the latest dashboard, 33 persons are in institutional isolation, 914 in home isolation and four in institutional quarantine.

Additionally, a total of 67,112 persons have recovered. However, a whopping 955 active infections are still being monitored across the country.

Meanwhile, 672,899, tests have been processed to date.

An analysis shows one new case in Region One (Barima-Waini), five in Region Two (PomeroonSupenaam), two in Region Three (Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara), 46 in Region Four (DemeraraMahaica), six in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), 18 in Region Six (East

Berbice-Corentyne), one in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and one in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).

There were no new reported cases in Regions Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and Nine (Upper TakutuUpper Essequibo).

A dispersion of active cases shows 17 in Region One, 23 in Region Two, 70 in Region Three, 489 in Region Four, 42 in Region Five, 94 in Region Six, 25 in Region Seven, 146 in Region Nine and 49 in Region 10.

Vaccination figures show that so far, 444,720 or 86.7 per cent of adults have taken a first dose, while some 344,441 or 67.1 per cent of persons 18 years and over are fully vaccinated.

For adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, 35,303 first doses or 48.3 per cent and 25,873 or 35.4 per cent second doses have been administered.

dren in the five to 11 category shows 5677 first doses or 5 per cent. Only 1070 or one per cent have returned for their second shot. In addition, over 70,000 persons have returned for their booster shots thus far.

According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recent figures, some 565,207,160 confirmed cases were reported globally along with 6,373,739 deaths.

In the Region of the Americas, that is, Latin America and the Caribbean, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased to 168,183,683 while the death toll in the region has gone up to 2,779,572.

Ganja, suspected stolen items found during Police operation in Hopetown

hree persons were on Thursday arrested during a Police operation at Hopetown, West Coast Berbice (WCB), with a quantity of ganja and suspected stolen items.

Based on reports gathered, Police acting on information conducted a search on the property of a 30-yearold self-employed man.

At the time of the raid, the man along with two others were seen sitting in the hall area of the one-flat wooden house.

A black plastic bag and several ziplock bags were seen on the floor in front of them. The Police checked the black plastic bag and the ziplock bags - all of which contained a quantity of cannabis.

s investigations continue into a shooting incident that occurred last week in the vicinity of the Mantra Bar in Kitty, Georgetown, a black Glock-19 firearm has been recovered in an empty lot on Thursday.

The Police have said that, acting on information received, a team of ranks searched an empty lot in Lamaha Gardens and stumbled upon a black plastic bag in a white food box, wherein was contained a black Glock-19 firearm with its serial number filed off. The lot searched is completely fenced, and has an incomplete concrete structure thereon.

The firearm was picked up, along with its concealment, and the magazine, which had no ammunition, was ejected.

It has been reported that on Sunday evening, Deon Jerrick was in the company of friends in the vicinity of the Mantra Restaurant and Lounge when they became involved in an argument with a 28-year-old suspect.

That argument resulted in ‘gun play’ in which both the victim and the suspect discharged rounds at each other. In the process, Deon Jerrick received a wound to the left side of his body at just below his armpit.

After the shooting, the suspect ran south along Lamaha Street, but was later apprehended by the Police; while Deon Jerrick, supported by one of his friends, was taken to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was treated.

Investigations are ongoing.

The body that was found on America Street

he body of an unidentified man was, in the wee hours of Friday, found at Lot 16 America Street, Georgetown.

The body is of a male of East Indian descent, who is suspected to be between 35 and 40 years of age. Measuring about 5 feet 8 inches tall, the body is of a person of medium built, brown in complexion, with short hair. It was clad in a black t-shirt and a pair of blue short pants.

The scene where the body was discovered has been visited by a party of Police

ranks from the Brickdam Police Station, and has been processed by the Crime Scene Department at CID HQ. Upon discovery of the body, several persons were questioned, but no useful information has as yet been received. Moreover, the Police are yet to review CCTV footage. The body was examined, but no marks of violence were evident.

The body has been taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary to await identification and a post mortem examination.

“Smallie” found guilty of murdering soldier

Jury deliberations in the trial of Mark Royden Williams – the man charged with the 2008 murder of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Corporal Ivor Williams – ended on Friday with a guilty verdict.

The murder accused, called “Smallie”, who is currently on death row for killing 12 persons during the 2008 Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) Massacre, shot and killed the 24-year-old solider on January 23, 2008, at Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

dead after he and other ranks were shot at by gunmen while carrying out a military operation in the ECD community.

While leading his defence before Demerara High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon, Mark Williams had adamantly denied fatally shooting the soldier, claiming that “[investigators] got the wrong man”.

The convicted killer, who was represented by Attorneyat-Law Nigel Hughes, will be sentenced on September 1.

State Counsel Latifah Elliott and State Counsel Muntaz Ali represented the prosecution.

Meanwhile, in 2017, Mark Williams and Dennis “Anaconda” Williams were sentenced to death by hanging for their involvement in the 2008 Bartica Massacre, which left 12 persons, including three policemen, dead.

They were found guilty of the killings by a jury.

The two men have since filed an appeal against their conviction and sentence.

That case is yet to be called at the Court of Appeal of Guyana.

On that fateful night, Police Lance Corporal Zaheer Zakir and Constables Shane Fredericks and Ron Osborne were fatally shot. Edwin Gilkes, Dexter Adrian, Irving Ferreira, Deonarine Singh, Ronald Gomes, Ashraf Khan, Abdool Yasseen, Errol Thomas, and Baldeo Singh were the civilians killed.

Then, in 2021, Mark Williams was found not guilty by a jury of the December 16,

2007 murders of 35-year-old Rajesh Singh and 25-yearold Fazal Hakim, which occurred at Triumph, ECD. Another man, Michael Caesar, called “Capone”, was sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter over the deaths of Singh and Hakim.

In February 2019, Mark Williams and Sherwin Nero, called “Catty” or “Pussy”, were both found not guilty of the murder of businessman Kumar Singh, which occurred on August 30, 2007.

Singh, 51, also known as “Mango Man”, of Cove and

John, ECD, was shot and killed by bandits.

In May 2013, Mark Williams and another man, James Hyles, called “Sally”, were found not guilty of murdering 11 persons, including children, in the January 2008 Lusignan, ECD Massacre.

Following the men’s discharge, the State appealed their acquittals to the Court of Appeal, arguing, among other things, that several material irregularities had rendered the not guilty verdicts unsafe and unsatisfactory.

The appellate court unanimously allowed the

State’s appeal, thereby remitting the matter to the High Court for a new trial. But Mark Williams and Hyles appealed that ruling to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), which, in May 2018, restored their acquittals.

In 2017, Mark Williams was among the high-profile prisoners who escaped after a fire gutted the Camp Street Prison in Georgetown. He was, however, apprehended weeks later by Police ranks while he was on a public minibus on the Weldaad Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB). (G1)

ANSA McAL opens new minimart at BV A

s ANSA McAL Limited enters its 30th year in Guyana, it has launched its first minimart at Beterverwagting (BV), on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) with the aim of elevating its customers’ shopping experiences.

The multimillion-dollar minimart by ANSA McAL was officially opened to the public on Friday and hosts a pharmacy and a paint department. It also has a variety of liquors, both canned and packaged foods, along with other items.

All items that will be sold at the minimart, are distributed by the company.

According to the Managing Director of ANSA McAL, Troy Cadogan, the

minimart will provide products that will meet industry standards and add value to the quality of life of Guyanese.

He also said the company is hoping to have ANSA McAL minimarts all over the country and will provide employment for many people.

“This is an additional increment of 20 persons who are actually being employed here…we plan on having small outlets across the country. So, if we replicate the footprint here, in the next five years it will be over 100 Guyanese staff added to the payroll,” he said.

Paul Slowe withdraws case seeking injunction blocking promotion of Police ranks

n light of the recent promotion of ranks of the Police Force, the immediate past Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Paul Slowe, has withdrawn his application for an injunction to stop the promotion of the ranks. Slowe had on July 28, applied for an injunction to block the PSC, whose members were appointed on May 31, by President Dr Irfaan Ali, from promoting ranks until the court rules on his challenge to the Head of State’s suspension last year of the former PSC. President Ali had suspended the PSC after its then Chairman Slowe and one of its commissioners, Clinton Conway, were slapped with fraud charges.

They, along with other retired and serving Police ranks, have been implicated in a $10 million fraud over duties delegated to them for revising the Police Force’s raft of Standing Orders.

Up to July 3, when the promotion lists for senior and junior ranks were issued, Slowe’s case for the injunctive relief had not come up before a High Court Judge, so there was, therefore, nothing preventing the promotions from being effected.

The case was eventually called on July 11 before Justice Gino Persaud, who had refused to entertain the application until the Full Court ruled on Attorney General Anil Nandlall’s application for leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal, that court’s ruling, upholding his decision for the challenge to the constitutionality of the President’s decision to be heard on its merits.

The Full Court denied Nandlall’s application on July 14.

Overtaken

Meanwhile, Slowe’s lawyer, Selwyn Pieters, on Friday, conceded with Justice Gino Persaud that the application for the injunction has been overtaken by events—the promotion of the ranks.

He had also requested for that application to be amended to, instead, seek

an order “staying the effect” of the promotions until Justice Persaud ruled on the substantive matter.

He eventually settled on withdrawing the matter.

While he raised no objections to that request, Nandlall stated that if this action is futile, “then we will be insisting on costs”.

Pieters then sought and was granted time to consult with his client on the way forward.

Darshan Ramdhani, QC, on behalf of the new PSC, has applied to Justice Persaud for the commission to be removed as party in the challenge to the President’s June 2021 decision.

Nandlall had argued that the case brought by the former PSC against its suspension, could not have survived the August 8, 2021 expiration of the life of the constitutional commission.

But the Full Court disagreed finding that, “The expiration of the three-year term of the members appointed to the commission does not affect the body itself – established by Article 137 [of the Constitution] – save that the PSC will be unable to carry out its functions without appointed members. The PSC remains an existing constitutional body, even if the term of its appointed members has expired. There is, therefore, no issue of the commission ceasing to be an existing body, or having no capacity upon the expiration of the term of its appointed members.”

As such, the Full Court agreed that Justice Persaud was “correct” when he refused to strike out the claim on the ground that the life of the commission had expired.

The Full Court – comprising Justices Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and Fidela Corbin-Lincoln – varied Justice Persaud’s order so that Slowe can be added as a party to the proceedings rather than being substituted for the PSC. Justice Persaud said he will hear Ramdhani’s Fixed Date Application (FDA) after Chief Justice Roxane George, SC, renders her ruling on a related matter.

In that matter, the Chief Justice heard over three hours of arguments from lawyers and is being asked

by Opposition Chief Whip Christopher Jones to pronounce on the constitutionality of the President’s appointment of Hicken to act as Top Cop. Should his appointment be declared unlawful, Jones further wants the court to nullify the recent Police promotions.

Ultimately, the Opposition parliamentarian is seeking a declaration that Hicken’s appointment is “unreasonable, ultra vires the Constitution,

Common Law and is illegal, null, void and of no legal effect” because President Ali failed to “meaningfully consult” with the Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton, as is required constitutionally required.

Article 211 (1) mandates that “the Commissioner of Police and every Deputy Commissioner of Police shall be appointed by the President acting after meaningful consulta-

tion with the Leader of the Opposition and the Chairperson of the Police Service Commission after the Chairperson has consulted with the other members of the Commission”.

Provisions for a person to act in the office of the Commissioner of Police are outlined under Article 211 (2) of the Constitution, and the provisions contained in Article 211 (1), shall apply to such an appointment as they apply to the appointment of a person to hold that office.

With Justice George’s decision set for August 11, Justice Persaud had adjourned the matter to August 24.

Following the appointment of Opposition Leader Norton and the Police Service Commission, President Ali commenced a process of meaningful consultation with the Opposition Leader to appoint Hicken to act as the Commissioner of Police.

Those consultations were halted following an undertaking by Nandlall after Norton applied for an or-

der staying any process of meaningful consultation on the appointment of Hicken, an interpretation of the term “meaningful consultation” as well as his challenge to the President’s appointment of the PSC and Integrity Commission.

Oral arguments in this matter are set for next month.

At the time of Hicken’s appointment on March 30, the office of the Leader of the Opposition remained

vacant following the resignation of Joseph Harmon on January 26. Aubrey Norton was appointed Leader of the Opposition on April 13.

In the absence of an Opposition Leader with whom the Head of State is constitutionally required to consult on the appointment, Nandlall, while addressing the Chief Justice earlier this week, contended that President Ali made a “judgement call” and did the “most reasonable thing” when he went ahead with appointing Hicken to act in the highest office in the Guyana Police Force (GPF) – the country’s premier law enforcement agency – in the interest of national security.

And even if the court finds that the appointment was unconstitutional, the defence of the doctrine of necessity would justify a departure from what is required by the Constitution, and the de facto officer doctrine would bring legality to everything done by the acting Commissioner of Police, including the promotions, argued the Attorney General. Guyana/TT joint venture seeking to prep locals in subsea support services

C

aribbean Subsea Specialist Inc (CSSI), a majority Guyanese joint venture partnership incorporated in Guyana, is looking to train Guyanese to support the oil and gas industry with a host of offshore services including subsea support.

Incorporated in late 2017, CSSI is a joint venture partnership between a Trinidadian firm, Subsea Specialist, and Guyanese-owned Beharry Group of Companies. The Trinidadian company brings to the table several other international partners that service the offshore industry.

With over 30 years of experience in the subsea industry from pipeline surveys to subsea installation, this organisation now aims

to bring world-class service to the expanding offshore industry in Guyana.

The main services provided by CSSI are Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) services; commercial diving services, and logistics & procurement services.

Speaking during an introductory ceremony on Thursday evening, CSSI’s Operations Director, Dylan Galt, revealed that so far, some $15 million has been invested into the local operations – a big part of which is training Guyanese to service the oil and gas.

“We want to get the Guyanese people ready to work. We want to build the local skilled labour…

Guyana has this [local content] legislation in order and working today, we really are trying to get the

Guyanese people, the local Guyanese guys, crossedtrained and ready to go offshore,” he told reporters.

According to Galt, CSSI has so far trained two sets of Guyanese in ROV services – one set in 2019 and the second set earlier this year. Another training session is expected to come on stream soon.

The Director further disclosed that they are also planning to conduct diving training for commercial divers in the coming months.

In fact, the company has already recruited diving experts to come to Guyana to train locals to get them up to par with industry best practices and international standards.

“We have selected [the diving experts] already so we’re in the process of getting that training going and getting the guys certified to do commercial diving services in Guyana,” he noted.

In fact, Galt emphasised CSSI’s commitment to the country’s local content laws. He posited that the end goal is to have 100% Guyanese running the company with the Trinidadian firm serving as a consultant.

he Education Ministry has announced that it will begin the registration process for displaced students, who were affected by the fire at St George’s School, on Monday. This process is to ensure that students are placed in a school for the new academic year.

In a notice issued on Friday, the Ministry said that it is “inviting parents of students attending St George's Secondary to visit the Department of Education, Lot 68 Brickdam, Georgetown, from Monday, July 25, 2022, to participate in a registration process which will aid the Ministry in the placement of students for the new academic year”.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Fire service (GFS) said it is still investigating the cause of the fire which destroyed St George’s High School on North Road in Georgetown on Wednesday.

The wooden and concrete structure was destroyed by a ravaging fire that was later brought under control by the GFS after some time had been spent battling the fire.

An official from the Fire Service told Guyana Times that investigators re-visited the scene, and will provide an update on the cause as soon as Monday.

It was reported that on the day of the fire, a class with first formers was ongoing when both teachers and students were alerted by the cleaner that smoke was emanating from the Social Studies room.

After the class had exited the building, the fire began spreading quickly, and soon engulfed the upper floor of the two-storey building. As a result of the blaze, 421 students and their teachers are now displaced.

As such, Education Minister Priya Manickchand has said the Ministry is currently looking for accommodation for

ledge base in Guyana and of the Guyanese people, and get them to a level that is

“In this case, we were presented with the filing [Wednesday] afternoon – a filing and not [before a judge as was the case in previous rulings]. But in all of this, throughout all the jurisdiction, it comes down to, in the end also, the discretion of the Speaker. And I’m happy to say in this case, my discretion is founded in constitution, convention and in commonwealth practices,” the Speaker contended.

Moreover, Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall, S.C., was one of the MPs who debated on the motion and presented extensively on the doctrine of separation of powers. He emphasized that the conduct and discipline of Members of the National Assembly are “intrinsically, inherently and innately” parliamentary functions.

“So, if another agency or organ of the State wants to be part of those functions, it is that other agency that has to be careful that it does not trespass upon the province of Parliament… In this particular situation, it is the judiciary that must exercise vigilance, circumspection, caution and care that it does not exceed and trespass in to the provincial responsibility of this Parliament,” he argued.

Meanwhile, the other speakers were Governance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gail Teixeira and Opposition MP and Deputy Speaker Lenox Shuman – both of whom outlined the need for the Opposition Members to be sanctioned for their disruptive behaviour to prevent reoc-

curence.

Teixeira pointed out that Members cannot pretend that nothing happened especially since the MPs were all present in the House.

She noted that as the current longest serving MP in the House, she has never witnessed such behaviour, contending that the incident is of such great magnitude that it warrants actions to be taken.

“What transpired on December 29 [2021] will go down in the history of our Parliament as one of the worst images and reflection of the integrity and the behaviour of our elected officials of in the National Assembly. This level of collectively vulgarity by the Members of the Opposition side, in the APNU/AFC, in this case, cannot be treated lightly,” the Government Chief Whip stated.

On the other hand, Shuman – the representative of the Joinder List on the Opposition’s side – urge his Opposition colleagues to think about the kind of politician and leader they want to be for their constituent.

“We have Standing Orders… they are built within the confines of a structure that we all subscribe to the minute we took our oath…

I would say unequivocally that I support this motion and I hope that all of the Members of this House, and whatever future membership that comes after us, that they draw from this and take the positive from it that we as parliamentarians cannot and should not condone behaviours of such,” Shuman noted.

But Shepherd joined forces with Akeal Hosein to lead an unlikely fightback that saw the West Indies come extremely close, before falling short by just three runs in a last-ball thriller.

West Indies didn't get off to the greatest of starts in chasing 309. Batting mainstay Shai Hope departed as early as in the fifth over, after miscuing a top edge.

Kyle Mayers took charge after that wicket, and kept the Indian bowlers at bay; and Shamarh Brooks, at the other end, took on Shardul Thakur for successive boundaries in the final over of the powerplay.

At that stage, the hosts needed 57 to win off 33 deliveries, but even though the equation was very much gettable, India kept the two allrounders quiet as the equation became 47 off 24.

Shepherd did give the home dugout some hope by smashing Chahal for a six and fetching another boundary off Siraj in the following over. But with 27 to defend off 12 deliveries, India were still the favourites to close out the game with a win.

However, the game turned on its head when Shepherd smacked Prasidh Krishna's first ball of the penultimate over for a six. Even though the bowler staged a strong comeback, he did concede another boundary to close the over. Shepherd then took on Siraj in the final over and brought the equation down to

10 off 3. But with five needed off the final delivery, Siraj managed to bowl one right in the blockhole between the batsman's legs to seal the deal for the visitors.

ECB are latest beneficiaries

T

he Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) has been the latest recipient of a donation from the Project: “Cricket gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana”.

On behalf of the ECB, its President, Businessman Deleep Singh, has received nine thigh pads and one pair of junior wicketkeeping pads from this project.

Speaking at the simple handing over ceremony, Singh said, “The ECB is in a transformational phase, and we welcome any assistance to rise above the challenges. It’s a wonderful initiative, and I must commend the partners, Anil Beharry of Guyana and Kishan Das of the USA, and wish them more success in the future.”

Responding, Anil Beharry

commented, “Ever since I played inter-county (cricket) in Essequibo and became an Executive Member of the Berbice and Guyana Cricket Boards, I (have) advocated for special treatment for Essequibo cricket, taking into consideration its geography and related cost.

Myself and Kishan are happy to be part of the development of Essequibo, Guyana, and West Indies cricket.”

The gear was recently distributed to the ECB SubCommittees.

Total cricket-related items collected so far: $170,000 cash, two trophies, eleven cricket boots, eighteen pairs of batting pads, twenty bats, fourteen pairs of batting gloves, nineteen thigh pads, one pair of wicketkeeping pads, one arm guard, six cricket bags and two helmets. In addition to the above, $600,000 worth in gear was donated by Sheik Mohamed, former national wicketkeeper-batsman.

To date, 37 players from all three counties of Guyana have already benefited from receipt of the following items: three junior gear bags, two trophies, one arm guard, fourteen bats, one box,

two helmets, ten pairs of cricket shoes, ten pairs of batting pads, one bat rubber and twelve pairs of batting gloves.

In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area have benefited from receipt of two used bats. Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenaam cricket committees and Cotton Tree Die Hard cricket club have also each received one box of red cricket balls, while the RHCCCC has received two such boxes, fifteen white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicketkeeping gloves and a set of stumps and bails.

The Essequibo Cricket Board has now joined the list of beneficiaries.

Cricket related items, used or new, would be distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent spotting is being done across the country, and club leaders also assist to identify talent. Progressive and well managed clubs would also benefit from receipt of donations.

Rayon Griffith appointed Guyana Amazon Warriors' Head Coach

T

he Guyana Amazon Warriors Franchise have announced the appointment of Rayon Griffith as Head Coach for the 2022 season of the HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Griffith is no stranger to the Guyana Amazon Warriors, having performed in the capacity of Head Coach last season. Prior to that, Griffith had served three seasons as the Assistant Coach for the fivetime finalists.

Currently, the 43-year-old Level Three-certified coach serves as the West Indies Senior Men’s Fielding Coach, while also completing stints with the West Indies A team and the Guyana national side, wherein

he was instrumental in the franchise winning five consecutive First-Class titles.

During his playing days, Griffith featured in 22 First Class matches and 22 List A games, wherein he took 56 and 22 wickets respectively.

He has had a high score of 82 not out, before hanging up his gloves after the 2007 season.

Speaking on his appointment, Griffith has said, “It is truly a privilege to continue with the Guyana Amazon Warriors, this time in the capacity of Head Coach. I am overjoyed that the franchise has decided to appoint me in this role. This franchise holds a special place in my heart, and

working along with them has been a remarkable experience. I have no doubt this season will be nothing short of fantastic.”

Griffith added, “I am really looking forward to working with the team. We have a number of quality players, both locally, regionally and internationally.

Some of them have been with the franchise for a number of years, and I enjoy working with them.”

Dr. Bobby Ramroop, Chairman of the Guyana Amazon Warriors, has said, “We are excited to have Rayon Griffith at the helm of our coaching staff this year. He has been a key member of this family for a number of years, and has

worked exceptionally well. We wish him well in his new role, and look forward to a successful season.”

The 2022 men’s Hero CPL tournament will take place from August 31 to September 30. The host countries for 2022 will be St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and Guyana.

The running of the first Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) will take place in 2022. It will feature Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and Trinbago Knight Riders.

The WCPL will take place in St Kitts & Nevis from August 31 to September 4.

he male and female football teams of the Guyana Police Force Sports Department on Wednesday displayed superior skills and techniques at the Police Sports Club Ground at Eve Leary to be crowned champions of the Force’s 183rd Anniversary Football Competition.

In the first match, the Sports Department female team eased to a 3-0 win over the team from Regional Division 4(A),

compliments of Melinda Lurson, Analisa Vincent and Deekola Chester.

In the second match, the Sports Department male team rebounded in grand style from a 1-goal disadvantage in the first half to hammer in three (3) goals in the second half and end the game 3-1 in their favour. Scoring the lone goal for Regional Division #9 was Adrian Aaron, while Trevon Pluck (two goals) and Pernell

Schultz (one goal) sealed the deal for the Sports Department.

The MVP Award in the female category went to Analisa Vincent of the Sports Department, while Travis Pluck of the Sports Department shared the MVP Award in the male category with Adrian Aaron of Regional Division #9.

Travis Hercules of Regional Division #7, who scored six (6) goals, received the Most Goals

Trophy for the Male category, while Nichola Chester, with 3 goals, received the Most Goals Trophy for the Female category.

Rampersaud, Sandia spin Berbice to massive win over Rising Stars

he Berbice Under-19 team have commenced their campaign in the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB’s) InterCounty Two-Day tournament with a massive innings-and-31runs’ win over their Rising Stars counterparts in a match played at the La Bonne Intention cricket ground on Thursday.

Off-spinner Jonathan Rampersaud and left-arm spinner Jeremy Sandia took a combined 15 wickets in the match as they bowled out the Rising Stars for 71 and 72 runs respectively.

A tall off-spinning maestro,

Rampersaud, who plays locally for the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, claimed 6-31 in the first innings to end with match figures of 8-53 from 27 overs; while his club mate, the wily Sandia, destroyed the Rising Stars in the second innings with figures of 6-27, as he ended his match with figures of 7-37 from 21.4 overs.

Rampersaud Ramnauth, a 14-year-old with tremendous promise, top-scored for Rising Stars in the first innings with 28 runs from 92 balls, and Rose Hall Canje's Sanjay Algoo (20) and Ajay Gainda (10) were the only other

players to reach double figures for Rising Stars.

In the second innings, Mayhiem Khan, with 26, and Algoo, with 14, gave their team a start in another unproductive batting display.

Berbice had made 173 in their only innings, as the batsmen failed to score big.

Rashad Gaffoor struck a six and three fours in his top score of 31 from 89 balls. Romesh Baharat’s 24 and Leon Cecil’s unbeaten 23 were the other top scores.

According to the GCB, the Guyana Under-19 team will travel to St Vincent and the Grenadines for the Regional Under-19 tournament which starts on August 7, and only the Three-Day format would be played this year.

tephan DaSilva, a 29-year-old resident of Hope, East Bank Demerara (EBD), will represent Guyana at the World Boxing League (WBL), to be held in Australia on September 10, 2022.

Through Team Mohamed’s, he has been able to acquire the necessary financial assistance, courtesy of its principal, Azruddin Mohamed.

WBL is the real crossover of the semi-pro, pro, youth and master boxers around the world, and Da Silva is expected to use this opportunity to showcase his talent with the aim of crossing over to international boxing with the World Boxing Association (WBA).

His first participation at this level of boxing was in the Caribbean Games in 2015, and only recently, he participated in the Elton Dharry Boxing Card which was held at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara. In that match, he knocked out his opponent in 37 seconds of the first round.

He was invited to participate in the Elton Dharry event by Guyanese professional boxing promoter Gairy St. Clair, the former IBF world junior-lightweight champion, who now resides in Australia.

Da Silva is expected to leave Guyana’s shores in the first week of August, and while in foreign territory, will undergo intense training leading up to the event.

Several other countries are expected to participate in this event, including Fuji, Pakistan and Australia.

Team Mohamed’s has extended its best wishes to Da Silva as he represents the Golden Arrowhead on the international platform.
