– dispatches assistance to affected communities
The CDC, which is under the guidance of the National Flood Monitoring Taskforce, said they have responded to the reports of inundation at Kaikan and other neigh bouring villages and are act ing Inswiftly.arelease to the me dia on Friday, the CDC said at least 100 persons resid ing along the Cuyuni River have been affected by the rising waters. Apart from Kaikan, communities such as Carboo, Rock Landing, Wenamu, and Eteringbang were also affected.

Families who are cur rently being affected by flooding at Kaikan in Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni) and other neigh bouring villages, are receiv ing assistance from the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).
“Flood relief supplies have been distributed to sev eral areas via the regional authorities and the Guyana Defence Force, and more supplies are scheduled to be delivered there shortly,” the releaseAccordingadded. to the CDC, they have an assessment team in the region working with the regional represen tatives to further assess the developing areResidentssituation.countrywideencouragedtoreportall flood impacts to local au thorities or the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) on 600-7500 or 226-1114 at any time. Over the past weeks, several communities have been battling water in their homes due to the overtop ping of rivers and the con tinuous rainfalls. Only recently, the Government said it was looking at a permanent solu tion to the flooding situation especially in Kwakwani, Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region 10), and surround ing communities. These ar eas were heavily affected by the rising water levels. Several riverine commu nities such as Kwakwani Waterfront, Ladern’s Ville (Aroaima), and Hururu were seriously affected. As such, emergency procurement for contractors was undertaken, and works to the tune of $8 million were carried out in Speightland to combat the flooding situation. To further allevi ate the problems, Central Government, the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and re gional bodies ensured drains and canals were clearing, pumps and kokers were re paired and maintained, and livestock were relocated. Since the beginning of May, Guyana has been sub jected to increased rainfall. However, this had not re sulted in any major accumu lation of water or flooding until June. Prior to this sit uation, the last major flood ing was in June 2021, when heavy rains resulted in mass flooding countrywide. Over 50,000 house holds were affected, lead ing Government to activate a combination of relief mea sures and grants for farm ers, residents, and other af fected persons.

“We told you that you will benefit from the reve nues of this country when some said that you must not be part of it. You will ben efit, you will get the deliv ery of the Government,” the President contended.
Minister Rodrigues fur ther disclosed that from 2020 to now, her Ministry, through its Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), has distributed some 400 house lots to res idents in Region Nine and has already spent over $669 million for related works. According to President Ali, no other Government has done as much for the hinterland and its people’s development as the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).Hepointed out that in addition to these two new measures, residents in the region will also bene fit from other measures the Government has introduced.
“So, if you are build ing your home and you have your lot allocated to you. And you’re building a low-income home or a young professional home then you will benefit from the cement and the steel that we’re giv ing [out free],” he stated. This, the Head of State added, is in addition to oth er measures tailored to ben efit hinterland communities including the hinterland housing programme, the hinterland home improve ment project, the hinterland sanitation project in which the Government is setting up septic tanks for house holds, as well as the pro gramme that is targeting roof replacements in hinter landHecommunities.furthernoted that “we’re building complete concrete homes. And we have communities in this region that are already ben efitting or would have al ready benefitted from this programme”.Onlylast month, President Ali announced a special housing initiative that will see Government construction of homes for landowners at varying val ues with easy financing through the banks. This is in addition to measures previously rolled out including the distribu tion of free building mate rials and slashed interest rates on bank financing for homeowners along with the removal of VAT on certain construction materials such as cement, sheetrock and concreteFriday’sboards.meeting in Lethem was the first in a se ries of similar engagements that the President is sched uled to hold in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region over the weekend. Jonathan Yearwood’s position on the removal of migrated Guyanese from the General Register/PLE and/or OLE has been dealt with by the Judiciary, who have been consistent that to do so would be unconstitu tional. I do, however, re spect Yearwood’s right to his opinion, and while I wonder if this position is to disqualify the majori ty of the ANUG executive from participating in elec tions, I would suggest he does some thinking before talking, failing which he should stick to pugilistic exploits with his nemesis Carol Smith-Joseph, and leave the politics to those who use more than Google searches to form opinions and represent the rights of ALL Guyanese. The actual number of schoolchildren eligible for the ‘Because We Care’ grant is 202,613. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, even more so in the age of Google, where ‘arti ficial intelligence’ has more than one meaning.
‘Artificial intelligence’ has more than one meaning
Dear Editor, Guyanese should be wary of the ‘Google poli ticians’, for Google gives access to information, but does not teach logic and reasoning. Jonathan Yearwood (founding mem ber of ANUG) proves this in his latest outburst on Facebook: “According to Google, Guyana's pop ulation in Guyana was 786,559 in 2020. According to the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant 2022, there are some 194,000 school chil dren who are therefore not eligible to vote”. Guyana will undertake a new cen sus, which begins on 15th September 2022, and will give us detailed informa tion on the size and compo sition of the populace when completed.Google will duly use this information to update its database, and Yearwood can regurgitate with every confidence. To unravel (de bunk is now a bad word) Yearwood’s arguments on the size of the Preliminary Voters List (PLE) would take some Guyanesepatience.are eligible to be registered at age 14 on the National Register of Registrants. This is the list from which the PLE is extracted. Only persons who are 18 or older (there is a cutoff date before ev ery election) are eligible to vote; hence, as the date of the election changes, so does the size of the PLE. “Preliminary” is the im portant word in PLE, as this list is published in the public domain nationwide (outside GECOM’s Offices) for a period called ‘Claims and Objections’. It is here that Yearwood can object to any person’s eligibili ty to participate in our de mocracy. The PLE is scoured by the large party activists in every area for inclusions and exclusions. One can forgive Yearwood’s lack of understanding of the ma chinery, as ANUG had Kian Jabour, an executive member who was not on the General Register, the PLE, or Official List of Electors (OLE), and therefore was not eligible to vote in 2020. When someone’s name is omitted from the PLE, a claim is made. The per son presents themselves to the GECOM officials, and is processed for inclusion in the OLE. Objections can be made to any name on a PLE (by a person on the same list or a scrutineer for that district) if a name is on the PLE and he/she is not known to reside at the address that accompanies that name, or is known to have died. The burden is on the objector to provide evi dence to support the objec tion.Yearwood also claims that names of the deceased populate the list. Yes, we know that persons who are on the List may have mi grated and maybe died, but their families have never sent a copy of the death cer tificate to the GRO for the names to be removed from the List. While families are not precluded from send ing death certificates to GECOM, the GRO (General Register Office) produc es that certificate, and there is no logical reason for the families to send the GRO a copy; the GRO, as a matter of routine, sends a monthly Death Report to the Commissioner of Registration, which is used to remove names from the General Register. In the odd event of a name not being removed from the register, not no ticed/ objected to by area residents/party scruti neers, and ends up being included in an OLE, there are other systemic meth ods to prevent someone from using that name to vote: GECOM staff, the fo lio, ink, party polling day agents and observer mis sions. The days of the voting dead are well behind this nation. The systems are near infallible, and would require criminal collusion of at least 5 people at any pollingEditor, station.
T raffic congestion continues to be a major challenge in large and growing metropolitan areas all over the world. And in spite of several efforts being made by Governments and other development partners to remedy the situation, it is more than likely that traffic congestion would become significantly worse in the years to come. Both the economy and school systems require that people work and go to school during the same time, resulting in road transport systems being overloaded. Here, in Guyana, traffic congestion in the city and its environs is almost unbearable, especially during morning and evening ‘rush hour’ traffic. These days, it is normal to spend more than half an hour in the traffic when going or coming from work or school, especially in areas along the East Bank and East Coast corridors, where there is a huge build-up of traffic almost daily. Not only is the traffic situation adding to people’s personal frustrations, but it is also certainly having a negative impact on the level of output of our citizens, both students and workers. For example, production hours are lost by way of employees coming to work late, or by being so tired and stressed the next day, after spending long hours either waiting for transportation or stuck in traffic. The establishment of new housing schemes across the country, and the increasing numbers of vehicles being imported have contributed significantly to traffic congestion in and around the capital city. Thousands of persons have now been relocated from the city to suburban and rural areas, where they were allocated house lots to build their homes. Most of these people have to travel back to the city, where they work or their children attend school. Also, many persons are now opting to purchase their own vehicles, which they use to commute to work and conduct their daily errands. In fact, within the last year or so, there has been a five-fold increase in the number of vehicles traversing our roads. The road network expansion programme, even though improving, still cannot accommodate this massive increase in the number of vehicles using our roads. Traffic congestion cannot be eliminated completely; it is the way modern societies operate. However, there are certain steps which could be taken to immediately minimise the impact traffic congestion has on citizens and their ability to get to their destinations with minimal delay. For example, the authorities could work to ensure there is increased Police presence in certain areas, to properly direct traffic in order to ensure a smooth flow. In some areas leading in and out of the city, there is hardly any Police presence, and some motorists use the opportunity to break the rules. There could also be more diversions where there is heavy traffic build-up. As a long-term solution, an effective way to address the challenge is to continue expanding the road network in the country, especially in areas that are heavily populated. At present, there are too many vehicles, too few roads, and too little space, especially in the capital city. There is no doubt that the new East Bank/East Coast Road Expansion project would bring much relief to the travelling public. It is expected that the new roadway would serve as a corridor for communities on the East Bank of Demerara, including Perseverance, Mocha, Providence, Eccles, and Peter’s Hall, as well as Aubrey Barker Road. Instead of going through the hectic Georgetown traffic, the new road link would allow drivers the option to divert from the East Coast and onto the bypass road to access the East Bank of Demerara.Theauthorities must continue to look at ways in which the road network in Guyana could be further expanded, improved, rehabilitated and maintained. In addition to easing traffic congestion, this could result in a reduction of the large number of road fatalities in the country.

Dear Editor, With reference to the subject at caption, an ur gent request is hereby made to have a resident (name provided) who is also known as "Short Man", a total nuisance to the Charlestown area, removed from the area permanent ly, as this individual has been a threat to the human rights of some innocent cit izens of Charlestown & the surrounding wards of Georgetown for many years now, & nobody seems to be doing anything about it. The following are among the offences this individu al has committed in recent years:1. Threatened to burn down residents’ houses. He presumably hears and sees things that aren’t there. 2. To every body's unpleasant surprise, "Short Man" was released from Police custody because the Haitian was "illegal" in Guyana.3.Habitually, & with out being provoked, jumped over fences into residents’ yards; and threw broken bottles at people in yards of this roamtosued,ansentwascess.noMagistratePsychiatricmittedricsendedwhilekillthetemptedcustodyheDrysdalebetweenparticularlypavementsers-byenedout4.neighbourhood.Regularlywhippedasharpknife&threattokillinnocentpasswhowalkalongtheofCharlestown,intheareaPrincessandstreets.5.Onseveraloccasions,wasreleasedfromPoliceonself-bailforatkillings.6.HewasplacedbeforecourtforattemptingtotwoPublicServants.thevictimspleadwiththeMagistratetohimforapsychiatevaluation,ortobeadintotheNationalHospital,theclaimedhehadknowledgeoftheproInstead,"ShortMan"placedonbailandhome.Subsequently,arrestwarrantwasisbutheneverreturnedcourt,andcontinuestofreely.
Assistance is being sought from the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Health, as this is both a social and pub lic health matter of con cern. If the present intol erable situation continues, there's the fear that some body would be killed. And it seems many people are afraid of "Short Man" be cause, in Guyana, criminals like him seem to have more rights than their victims. Sad to say, Police pro tection from "Short Man" seems to be non-existent. This nuisance to society is often seen standing for hours unending outside the Rentokil office at the cor ner of Charles & Drysdale Streets, Charlestown during the day and night. Grateful for immediate and sustained action on this serious issue before some thing dreadful happens.

the soldier ran on before the princesses, and laid himself down; and as the twelve sisters slowly came up very much tired, they heard him snoring in his bed; so they said, “Now all is quite safe”; then they undressed themselves, put away their fine clothes, pulled off their shoes, and went to bed. In the morning the soldier said nothing about what had happened, but determined to see more of this strange adventure, and went again the second and third night; and everything happened just as before; the princesses danced each time till their shoes were worn to pieces, and then returned home. However, on the third night the soldier carried away one of the golden cups as a token of where he hadAsbeen.soon as the time came when he was to declare the secret, he was taken before the king with the three branches and the golden cup; and the twelve princesses stood listening behind the door to hear what he would say. And when the king asked him. “Where do my twelve daughters dance at night?” he answered, “With twelve princes in a castle underground.” And then he told the king all that had happened, and showed him the three branches and the golden cup which he had brought with him. Then the king called for the princesses, and asked them whether what the soldier said was true: and when they saw that they were discovered, and that it was of no use to deny what had happened, they confessed it all. And the king asked the soldier which of them he would choose for his wife; and he answered, “I am not very young, so I will have the eldest.” – And they were married that very day, and the soldier was chosen to be the king’s heir.

The Opposition Leader has recently declared that the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) will continue to put pres sure on GECOM and its Chairperson to get her to resign. In fact, he said, “… we have left the door open. We hope we don’t have to close it and Claudette Singh will do the decent thing and resign… pressure her to re sign or face unspecified ac tion.”According to Minister Teixeira on Friday, these remarks by the Opposition Leader, along other APNU/ AFC supporters, need to be urgently investigated by the Police Force. She reminded that the GECOM Chair is a retired Judge and in oth er countries like the United States, such threats are con sidered a criminal offence. “Clearly Mr Norton, his party, and the APNU+AFC coalition have not deviat ed from these bullyism and intimidation tactics which we witnessed during the [David] Granger adminis tration,” the Minister re minded.Teixeira noted that these threats by Norton against Justice Singh are reflec tive of actions displayed by the APNU/AFC coali tion since 2020 when she agreed to conduct a nation al recount of the votes cast at the March 2 General and Regional“TheseElections.threatsand ver bal attacks expose a sinis ter plot to bully and intim idate a former Judge and the Chairperson of a consti tutional body, the Guyana Elections Commission, one of the highest in the land which is established to protect the right of the Guyanese people to vote for a Government of their choice in freely and fair ly managed elections,” the missive detailed. The Minister further recalled the “misogynis tic and racist” attacks by the coalition and its sup porters on Justice Singh along with Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley, US Ambassador to Guyana Sarah-Ann Lynch, and former Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana Lilian Chatterjee during the five-month period of the post-March 2020 elections. In fact, such threats to the GECOM Chair on Facebook were previous ly reported to the Police and the Cyber Crime Unit thus resulting in at least one APNU support er being charged under the Cybercrime Act. The Governance Minister posited that it cannot be coincidental that these women were vilified and threatened for their forthright support for con stitutional rule of law and democracy.“MrNorton and his par ty cannot accept any person that opposes their interest and stands in their way for their thirst for power, more so women daring to stand up for what is right. This is evident even within their own party in his abhorrent treatment as the newly elected leader of his party of former General Secretary, Amna Ally, a woman who served her party loyally for 53 years,” the statement de tailed.Further, it stated that, “Retired Justice Claudette Singh has loyally served her country for decades, she has guarded her integ rity and her adherence to the Constitution and rule of law. These threats are un acceptable in any civilised society and must not be al lowed to continue without consequences. The only way that “bully boy” Norton and his supporters will under stand that Guyanese are de cent, respectful people who will not accept such threats, is if they feel their rejection of this cowardly behaviour.” To this end, Teixeira sounded a series of calls in an attempt to stop Norton’s intimidating behaviour.

Captain Martin Nascimento commanded No. 1 Company; Captain Asad Ishoof, No. 2 Company; Lieutenant Harry Hinds, the Medium Mortar Platoon; and Lieutenant Marcus Munroe, the Reconnaissance Platoon. The aircraft was piloted by Captains Roland da Silva, Michael Chan-A-Sue, Philip Jardim, and Anthony Mekdeci. But what was unique was, since the Twin Otter has a small 3-foot baggage space in the nose of the aircraft, then Warrant Officer Liverpool agreed to squeeze himself in - armed with a machine-gun!!
Guyana had its first “nose-gunner”!!! This had to’ve taken real guts!! So, our troops took off from Apoteri, 90 miles away. The first plane with Liverpool zeroed in on the airstrip with his guns blazing. The Surinamese troops were shocked out of their wits and fled!! We converted their base into “Camp Jaguar”!! May Lt Liverpool RIP!! …PNC’s blushes Your Eyewitness must confess he’s feeling a twinge of sympathy for the PNC. As you, dear readers, would know, he firmly believes that for democratic governance to function as it was meant to do, an EFFECTIVE Opposition’s absolutely necessary. If nothing else but to keep the Government on the straight and narrow – or at least from not running off a cliff with the country’s treasury in tow!! And right now –after Aug 2, 2020 – things haven’t been exactly hunky dory with our major Opposition – the PNC. Now some folks are dumping on PNC-APNU Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton for the less-than-stellar performance since. But that’s not fair, since we gotta admit he was given basket to fetch water. It wasn’t just the bruising battle to become the leader, but the internecine warfare conducted to deny him that position. Like the foisted MPs who aren’t loyal to his vision of where the party ought to be going. He should clean house. …justice To point out that the revelations coming out of the affaire Bascom are scandalous isn’t necessarily attacking the GPF, but actually defending the value of “justice” that they, as an institution, were established to help dispense.
The recent passing of Lt Col (rtd.) Hartley Liverpool (Aug 25) should remind us that we still got two active border controversies – in the south-east from Suriname, who claim our New River Triangle (NRT); and in the west from Venezuela, who claim our entire Essequibo region. While we’re all chummy with Suriname now, it was Col Hartley Liverpool’s bravery back on August 19, 1969 –53 years ago almost to the day – along with that of some of his GDF squaddies - that repulsed the Surinamese from physically seizing and occupying 6000 sq miles of our country!! That’s more than THREE TRINIDADS!!

S everal men were on Friday slapped with several charges of il legal possession of firearm, armed robbery, and pos session of military clothes when they appeared at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court. First, 26-year-old Jomain Watson, a driv er of Kuru Kuru College, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was charged with posses sion of a firearm without li cence. However, 32-year-old Toney Jerrick and 25-yearold Stanford Ford of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, were jointly charged for an armed rob bery committed on Tanesha Fordyce on August 22, 2022, at Hillfoot Soesdyke Highway.Theyboth pleaded not guilty to the charge and were remanded to prison
Six months after we’d become independent, Venezuela seized our half of Ankoko island – which they still occupy! And even as Suriname’s Government was jawboning our Govt that they owned NRT, they sneaked in troops to create military bases to take physical possession of our remote piece of real estate. What to do?? Well, what followed should remind our present crop of leaders that while they talk softly (or even “skin teeth”), we’d better have a stick ready at all times!! The land and water (river) approaches to NRT were treacherous, but the GDF’s air transport of troops to put down the Rupununi Uprising earlier in January had sent them to the drawing board to figure out how to do the same to the NRT. Their intel revealed that the Surinamese troops were creating an airstrip (“Tigri airstrip”) that was almost complete, but they’d blocked it with oil drums. The GDF had two Twin Otters whose notable feature was they were STOL - Short Take Off and Landing – needing less than 300 metres to land! The GDF recruited three civilian pilots to join their one, and practised short landing – and got it down to 100 metres!!! All the while manoeuvring between oil drums until they were satisfied they could pull off the operation. They waited until the runway being built by the Surinamese army was long enough, and Aug 19 was designated for “Operation Climax”!!
Meanwhile, 36-year-old Jason Harry, a business man of Kuru Kuru; Jerrick, and 29-year-old taxi driv er Randy Fraser of Dahlia Street, Linden, were jointly charged for an armed rob bery committed on Leonard McKenzie which occurred on August 23, at Dookie’s, Sand Road Soesdyke, EBD. They were all remanded to prison until August 28 by Magistrate Sunil Scarce.

“…It is not that the con cerns of stakeholders about the PLE are being ignored, but GECOM must act with in the framework of the Laws of Guyana,” GECOM said. The Elections Commission reminded that the eligibility requirement for registration is that one must be a Guyanese citizen by birth, descent, or natu ralisation; or a citizen of a Commonwealth country liv ing in Guyana for one year or more. Once persons have met those requirements and have been registered, their registration is and remains legal. It follows that any re moval of their names from the NRRDB, without a le gal basis, would be unlawful andExistingunconstitutional.legislation pro vides that the removal of names from the NRRDB can only be done through the le gal methodology which in cludes the receipt of month ly reports from the General Register Office (GRO) or through an Objections pro cess; which allows for any elector, or suitably accred ited scrutineers of political parties, to object to the in clusion of names in the PLE whom they suspect may not be eligible. However, the burden of proof would be on the objector to present at the time of the relevant hear ing(s) to substantiate the ob jection(s).Currently, GECOM is conducting a Claims and Objections exercise that started this week and will run until Moreover,mid-September.theelector al body further pointed to the August 2019 ruling of Chief Justice (ag), Roxane George, in the matter of Christopher Ram vs Guyana Elections Commission about the tooftoofCJ2019.RegistrationHouse-to-HouseexerciseinInthatdecision,theruledthat“forthenamespersonsalreadyregisteredberemovedfromthelistelectors,theywouldhavebedeceasedorotherwise become disqualified but the failure of registered persons to be present or resident during the House-to-House exercise would not be such a disqualifier and such a per son’s name can only be de leted if they no longer meet the qualifying criteria under Article 159(2) or become dis qualified under Article 159 (3) and Justice(4).”
Leader Aubrey Norton has been pushing to have a clean vot ers’ list, which he maintains is “bloated.” He has also threatened to boycott and block future elections if this is notButdone.GECOM explained in a statement on Friday that while it is cognisant of those concerns, it can not act contrary to the le gal provisions enacted in the National Registration Act (NRA), Chapter 19:08 – something which it says has been extensively venti lated at the meetings of the Elections Commission.
The NRA dictates the procedures for the reg istration of eligible per sons and likewise the re moval of any such person from the National Register of Registrants Database (NRRDB), from which the existing Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) was extract ed. The voters’ list or Official List of Electors (OLE) is es tablished from the PLE.
George further ruled that “GECOM would have no legal authority to remove or deregister such persons who are otherwise qualified unless such reg istration can be cancelled under Section 8, which pro vides for cancellation of reg istration, or in the Claims and Objections period under Section 15 of the National Registration Act and the Regulations thereto.”
The Chief Justice concluded that if GECOM is to act outside of those legal provisions, “it would be unconstitutional and, therefore, illegal.” According to GECOM, it is of crucial importance to mention that the deci sion of the Chief Justice was not appealed, and, there fore, only by way of the en actment of legislation can persons’ names be removed from the NRRDB. To this end, the Elections Commission is reminding persons that the ongoing Claims and Objections ex ercise allows for all eligible persons to make a claim to be included in the OLE and provides the opportunity for all those persons who are al ready registered to check the accuracy of their registra tion records in the PLE that is posted countrywide in ev ery Registration Division/ Sub-Division. Accordingly, any such person can apply for changes/corrections to his/her registration particu lars on or before September 11, should this be required. Additionally, the Commission is also strong ly urging persons to scruti nise the PLE, and object to the inclusion of the names of persons, whom they sus pect may not be eligible for such inclusion, on or before September 15. Original doc umentary evidence must be provided to support the ob jection by the Nevertheless, law.
In light of the APNU/ AFC’s recent calls for the voters’ list to be cleansed, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has contended that it will only act by the Constitution of Guyana and legalOppositionprovisions.
GECOM further stated that it re mains resolute in its vision, “to maintain and further de velop the capacity to con duct credible registration; General, Regional and Local Elections which enjoy the confidence of all Guyanese and meet international standards for elections”. This statement by GECOM outlining the laws it operates under comes on the heels of Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall, SC, earlier this week calling on the Commission to clarify to the public, and more so the APNU/AFC, that it cannot remove the names of per sons from the voters’ list at the whim of its leader. Last week, GECOM Chair, Retired Justice Claudette Singh told report ers that everyone on the vot ers’ list is legally there. She added too that if indeed the list is bloated as alleged by the Opposition, then the on going Claims and Objections exercise can be used to con test names and have them removed.

The Government will be pumping US$160 mil lion to upgrade three of Guyana’s main healthcare facilities – the Georgetown Public Hospital, New Amsterdam Hospital and Linden Hospital Complex – which are geared to mod ernise the healthcare ser vices Guyanese receive.
“Having recognised that at this point in time, we need to modernise even de spite the investments we have done, we have gone ahead and started plan ning and mobilising the re sources to make these in vestments. I think there are a lot of changes that people would see in the next coming years at New Amsterdam, Georgetown, and Linden hospitals. When we start doing this, it would comple ment what we’re already do ing.”Recently, an InterAmerican Development Bank report was magni fied in local reports, exam ining the state of the New Amsterdam Hospital and adding that the facility was void of Thismaintenance.hassince been debunked. The Health Minister added that Government has spent some $1 billion to fix the existing facilities. He highlighted that some of the older hos pitals require a lot more re sources. Specifically at New Amsterdam Hospital, in the past two years, the theatres have been fixed, the dialysis unit has been restarted and a separate building has been identified for maternal and child health.
pital backup generator’s ATS for automatic switch ing on was not functioning. Washing machines, and dry ers were no longer function ing. Basic medical supplies were in severe shortage. The solar panels needed re habilitation. The hospital roofs were leaking. There was a general clutter in the hospital compound and the sewer system was overflow ing. Adding to the unseem ly sight in the hospital en vironment, the incinerator required a major overhaul and rehabilitation. The mor tuary was out of service. The hospital’s ambulances were barely serviceable.” He pointed out that since then, the hospital has seen a turnaround. A new X-ray machine has been function ing since early 2021 and earlier in 2022 a new mobile digital X-ray was procured and functioning. Presently, a new fixed-site digital X-ray is being installed. A CT machine has been provided and operation alised, laboratory equip ment has been procured, ECG equipment, ultrasound machines, CTG for foetal monitoring in the delivery rooms, and better systems for supplies have been put in place.Additionally, Dr Ramsammy penned, “Basic maintenance work on the existing operating theatres have been done, new ma ternity building, with three new operating theatres, is about to be commissioned, operating room tables, new delivery beds and new ICU beds have been procured, new ventilators and anaes thetic machines have been installed. A new oxygen therapy system is in place. The ATS for the backup gen erator has been installed. The solar system now con tributes 20 per cent of the energy needs of the hospi tal. There are now new am bulances for the hospital. A new chemotherapy building will be operationalised in a few weeks.”
In a statement earlier this week, Advisor to the Health Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy provided some insight into the Region Six facility’s operations when Government took office in 2020.He noted that there were no X-ray services at New Amsterdam Hospital. The laboratory was unable to provide basic testing be cause either equipment was down or reagents were un available.“Common medicines crit ical for patient care were mostly unavailable almost all the time. Beds, bath rooms, or restrooms, and the building, in general, were in need of urgent maintenance, the total environment was in a deplorable state. Pfizer said it was "sur prised" by the action and would "vigorously defend" it self against the allegations. In a statement, Moderna said Pfizer/BioNTech copied two key elements of its intel lectual property. One involves a "chem ical modification" which Moderna says its scientists were the first to demonstrate in human trials in 2015, and means the vaccine "avoids provoking an undesirable im muneTheresponse".second alleged in fringement is related to the way both vaccines target the distinctive spike protein on the outside of the virus. The jabs use a molecule of genetic code called messenger RNA to generate an immune response. That trains the body to fight off the real virus when it comes into contact with it. Early in the pandemic, Moderna said it would not en force its patents to help other drug companies develop their own jabs, particularly for lowand middle-income countries.
